With the rise of the industries and the migration of people from villages to cities in search of employment, there has been a regular increase in the problem of proper housing and unhygienic living conditions. These reasons have given rise to factors that cause pollution. 

Environmental pollution is of five basic types namely, Air, Water, Soil, and Noise pollution. 

Air Pollution: Air pollution is a major issue in today’s world. The smoke pouring out of factory chimneys and automobiles pollute the air that we breathe in. Gases like carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and sulphur dioxide are emitted with this smoke which mixes with air and causes great harm to the human body, flora, and fauna. To prevent and control air pollution, better-designed equipment, and smokeless fuels should be used in homes and industries. More and more trees should be planted to balance the ecosystem and control greenhouse effects. 

Noise pollution can be minimised by better design and proper maintenance of vehicles. Industrial noise can be reduced by soundproofing equipment like generators, etc.  

To control soil pollution, we must stop the usage of plastic. Sewage should be treated properly before using it as fertilizers and as landfills. Encourage organic farming as this process involves the use of biological materials and avoiding synthetic substances to maintain soil fertility and ecological balance.

In Europe and North America, they have had some success, but acid rain remains a major problem in the developing world , especially Asia. Greenhouse gases are another source of air pollution. Greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and methane occur naturally in the atmosphere. In fact, they are necessary for life on Earth. They absorb sunlight reflected from Earth, preventing it from escaping into space. By trapping heat in the atmosphere, they keep Earth warm enough for people to live. This is called the greenhouse effect . But human activities such as burning fossil fuels and destroying forests have increased the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. This has increased the greenhouse effect, and average temperatures across the globe are rising. The decade that began in the year 2000 was the warmest on record. This increase in worldwide average temperatures, caused in part by human activity, is called global warming . Global warming is causing ice sheets and glaciers to melt. The melting ice is causing sea levels to rise at a rate of two millimeters (0.09 inches) per year. The rising seas will eventually flood low-lying coastal regions . Entire nations, such as the islands of Maldives, are threatened by this climate change . Global warming also contributes to the phenomenon of ocean acidification . Ocean acidification is the process of ocean waters absorbing more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Fewer organisms can survive in warmer, less salty waters. The melting ice is forcing polar bears to travel farther to find food , and their numbers are shrinking. People and governments can respond quickly and effectively to reduce air pollution. Chemicals called chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) are a dangerous form of air pollution that governments worked to reduce in the 1980s and 1990s. CFCs are found in gases that cool refrigerators, in foam products, and in aerosol cans . CFCs damage the ozone layer , a region in Earth’s upper atmosphere. The ozone layer protects Earth by absorbing much of the sun’s harmful ultraviolet radiation . When people are exposed to more ultraviolet radiation, they are more likely to develop skin cancer, eye diseases, and other illnesses. In the 1980s, scientists noticed that the ozone layer over Antarctica was thinning. This is often called the “ ozone hole .” No one lives permanently in Antarctica. But Australia, the home of more than 22 million people, lies at the edge of the hole. In the 1990s, the Australian government began an effort to warn people of the dangers of too much sun. Many countries, including the United States, now severely limit the production of CFCs. Water Pollution Some polluted water looks muddy, smells bad, and has garbage floating in it. Some polluted water looks clean, but is filled with harmful chemicals you can’t see or smell. Polluted water is unsafe for drinking and swimming. Some people who drink polluted water are exposed to hazardous chemicals that may make them sick years later. Others consume bacteria and other tiny aquatic organisms that cause disease. The United Nations estimates that 4,000 children die every day from drinking dirty water. Sometimes, polluted water harms people indirectly. Air pollution has a direct negative impact not only on the climatic situation but also on people’s health throughout the country. The most vulnerable category of the population to climate change is adults over 65 since external factors most strongly influence their health.

Industrial enterprises for the extraction and processing of fossil fuels are located throughout the United States of America. Moreover, agricultural activities and natural disasters, such as seasonal forest fires, substantially impact the ecological situation. Moreover, given the air masses’ movement and the cyclical nature of many biological processes, it is fair to conclude that air pollution problems are national. First of all, the increased content of heavy particles such as CO2, N2O, and NH3 has a severe impact on the human respiratory system. In the southern regions, there is an increased risk associated with an increase in atmospheric temperature, which in the long term will lead to droughts, floods, and, as a result, food crises. In addition, high temperatures increase the rate at which infectious diseases such as malaria spread, which also poses additional risks in some countries (Fairweather, 2020). Thus, the problem of climate change is not only national but also goes to the global level.

To solve this problem, a systematic and comprehensive approach is required, the application of which will take a relatively long period. In climate change, due to air pollution, the main force to prevent environmental disasters need to change the approach to the production of substances from fossil fuels. First of all, increased taxation and legislative acts limiting the number of harmful products will reduce the burden on the environment. In the twenty-first century, the world community is ready to actively assist the government by applying the principles of conscious consumption and reducing the emissions of solid and gaseous waste into nature. People are beginning to use public transport, bicycles, and other transportation, emitting several times fewer emissions than cars.

Moreover, the environmental agenda is growing: citizens choose special packaging of products, strive to sort waste into categories, and the state needs to support private initiatives at the federal and local levels (Akhtar & Palagiano, 2018). First of all, it is necessary to create all the conditions to make it easier for people to choose environmentally friendly products, create additional waste sorting centers, and raise citizens’ education in environmental matters. This can be done both by legislative acts, there and by local decisions.

The problem of climate change and air pollution is global. Accordingly, a considerable number of people are subject to changes that affect their daily life. Consequently, there is an additional burden on the health care system. If the current trend continues, the situation runs the risk of spiraling out of control due to medical institutions’ limited capacity. The pandemic of the COVID-19 virus, which has spread worldwide, has demonstrated the existence of vulnerabilities in the healthcare system (Richardson, 2020). In cases where many people need the qualified help, medical institutions may not cope with the load. In the event of critical climate changes, implying global cataclysms, the healthcare system will not be able to cope with the task.

To sum up, climate change is primarily due to the high level of harmful substances emissions into the atmosphere. According to statistics, every year, more and more people over 65 years old directly feel the consequences of the changes. First of all, to reduce environmental change, it is necessary to introduce stringent measures for large industrial enterprises and agricultural centers. Increasing ecological awareness of the population also favorably contributes to curbing global warming and, as a result, reduces people’s vulnerability to disease.

Types of Pollution:

Broadly speaking, there are mainly three main components of the environment – inorganic or non-living, organic or living, and energy components.

Inorganic or non-living components are landmarks, biological or living components are represented including plants, animals, and humans, and energy components such as solar energy, hydroelectric power, nuclear power, etc. are very essential for the maintenance of various organisms.

Reason for Pollution:

Mankind itself is responsible for this situation. The problem of pollution is seen more in big cities because there is a huge amount of smoke coming out of factories and motor vehicles in 24 hours, due to which people have a lot of breathing problems. If natural resources are manipulated it causes natural disasters. We have forgotten our nature due to industrial development, due to which various types of diseases have surrounded us today, there is a great need for development to bring awareness.

The survival system is also becoming a dangerous system for life. For this reason, many serious problems are arising. Inhalation due to air pollution is causing lung and respiratory diseases. Stomach problems are arising due to water pollution.

Animals drinking dirty water are also dying due to water pollution. Problems such as mental stress, and deafness due to noise pollution are faced with anxiety and turmoil.

The solution to Pollution:

To save the environment from pollution, rapid control is needed. Afforestation should be given more attention. If possible, trees should be harvested at least. The government will have to take appropriate steps against environmental pollution and issue new laws against it.

Not only the government but politicians, thinkers, social workers, and every human being in India will have to become more aware of how to overcome it. There is a great need for development to bring awareness. Many efforts are being made to eliminate pollution among the scientists of the modern era.

Every human should think that there should be no water source or reservoir around the garbage heap and dirt. Humans should use products like coal and petroleum very rarely and adopt pollution-free alternatives as much as possible. Human beings should use solar energy, CNG, wind energy, biogas, cooking gas, and hydropower more, and doing so helps in reducing air pollution and water pollution.

Factories that have already been built cannot be removed, but the factories which the government should build should be built away from the city. Such traffic tools should be used to reduce smoke and help prevent air pollution. The felling of trees and forests should be banned.

The water of the rivers should be saved from waste and the water should be made potable with the help of recycling. Plastic bags should be used less and those that can be recycled should be used more. Laws must be followed to eliminate pollution.

Pollution Prevention:

If a man wants to survive on the earth, then do not let the environment get polluted and make every possible effort to keep the environment around us clean and clean. To keep the environment clean, a sense of awareness should be created among the people. A man should plant as many trees as possible. Scientists are looking for ways to reduce smoking. All the people of the world should work together to stop environmental pollution.

Deforestation too results in raised air pollution level as forest act as natural air filters – cleaning the air by absorbing harmful gases and emitting oxygen. They act as natural air filters, without them earth would be like nothing else than a large ball of smoke. Unless we realize the severity of the damage that we have done and take preventing measures on war footing; our future generations will live in poor health and despair.

The term pollution refers to the introduction of a harmful substance into the environment and the harmful substance is called the pollutant. There are various causes of pollution and almost all of them are human induced.

Causes and Effects of Pollution

There are numerous human activities those cause pollution. Most prominent of the activities causing environmental pollution are fossil fuel consumption, industrialization and littering. As per global estimates, fossil fuels account for 80% of world’s energy annually. Also, the burning of fossil fuel produces 21.3 Billion Tonnes of CO 2 every year, which is a potent green house gas. Presence of large amount of CO 2 in the environment results in an increased green house effect and hence global warming.

Industries are usually set up in proximity of a water body and use fresh water to wash out industrial waste into the water bodies. Industrial waste may include many harmful substances like gravel, sand, toxic chemicals and metals etc; which are washed into water bodies polluting them. Often the sewage of cities is discharged into rivers and streams, which too results in their pollution and deplete the marine life.

Littering is also responsible for a good amount of environmental pollution and ecological imbalance. Inefficient waste collection and disposal has resulted in large heaps of plastic and toxic wastes in and around the cities. This non bio degradable waste gets into our water bodies, polluting them and threatening marine life.

Strict environmental policies and larger public awareness are the keys to preventing further environmental damage. Policies mandating the industries to take necessary steps towards reducing their carbon footprint are a must. Moreover, any violation should be dealt with strictly imposing hefty fines and shut down. Efficient waste collection and disposal mechanism is also required to reduce prevent harmful waste from reaching our water bodies and soil.

If pollution continued at the same rate as of today, the day is not far, when the sky will become foggier and breathing difficult due to scarcity of oxygen. All the living species and resources will gradually perish leaving earth as a barren and lifeless ball of mud and smoke.

Best Ways to Control Pollution

Every year on June 5th, people around the world observe World Environment Day. World Environment Day is observed by more than 100 nations worldwide. The United Nations Environmental Programme began it in 1973, and it is still going strong now. The primary goal of this holiday is to raise environmental awareness. 

Excessive amounts of pollution are a threat to the environment. Pollutants have been trapped in all of the environment's primary components, including the hydrosphere, atmosphere, and biosphere. Normal environmental conditions are being destroyed by the rising pollution levels.

One of the most crucial resources for our life on Earth is the environment. The ecological web is a network of relationships in which every element of the environment is interdependent. This network must be kept in balance because if one part disintegrates, the entire system will disintegrate and wipe out all life. Because of this, we must decide to act to protect the environment and repair the harm we caused.

The primary goal of World Environment Day is to raise public awareness of environmental situations as they exist today. People come together on this day to work together to make our lives better. Every year, a particular theme or environmental issue is highlighted, and participants make a commitment to take action to address it. For instance, the theme for 2019 was air pollution.

The World Environment Day serves as a reminder to protect the environment and build up our world. It sheds light on the factors that harm our environment most. Every year on 5th June, World Environment Day is observed globally. The major goal of the annual event is to raise awareness of the value of the resources on our planet and the need to protect them.

A good and healthy environment is crucial for human survival. It provides us with the water we drink, the food we eat, and the air we breathe. Along with providing us with a place to live, it also aids with weather control.

Unfortunately, at present environment is facing numerous challenges. We need to find solutions to several major issues, including deforestation, pollution, and climate change.

When noxious gases are released into the atmosphere, heat is trapped and the temperature of the Earth rises. Our environment has already seen enormous changes due to it, and there seems no full stop.

When dangerous compounds are released into the atmosphere, which frequently happens from companies, autos, and power plants, pollution results. Our air and water become contaminated by pollution, which can also impair our health and ecosystems.

Deforestation is another major factor. And forests are important because they shelter numerous creatures, assist regulate the climate, and supply us with oxygen, forests are significant. Hence, forest destruction contributes to climate change and the extinction of species.

We can lessen our carbon footprint by using less energy, driving less, and consuming less meat in order to protect our ecosystem. Reduce trash through recycling and composting. Reduce the number of showers you take and patch leaks to save water.

Re “ Nuclear Testing Victims Deserve More ,” by W.J. Hennigan (Opinion, May 26):

The federal government’s nuclear weapons testing program was an assault on its own citizens — an assault that didn’t stop with the end of the Cold War.

Radioactive fallout moved across the country and entered bodies through breathing, food and water. Official denials of any harm followed, while Americans suffered and died from cancers caused by fallout.

The 1990 Radiation Exposure Compensation Act to compensate “downwinders” with cancer was a first step, but originally was limited only to those who lived in 20 counties in Utah, Nevada and Arizona. Current efforts to expand compensation are struggling to overcome congressional resistance; without action, the law is set to expire on June 7.

Government failure to act continues even as evidence of harm grows. Studies of radioactive Strontium-90 found in milk and in 320,000 baby teeth proved fallout was building up in bodies. Early results of an ongoing health study show Strontium-90 levels in baby teeth of Americans who died of cancer were more than double that of healthy Americans.

The injustice to those victimized by bomb tests is staggering. The federal government has harmed — rather than protected — its people and has failed to take responsibility. It is crucial that leaders finally recognize the true impact of bomb testing, and expand the law; to not act and let it expire would be unthinkable.

We must finally close the door on nuclear testing forever.

The United States Senate should approve the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, which bans all nuclear test explosions. The Senate’s failure to approve the treaty has stalled progress in nuclear arms control and disarmament.

We need to be taking steps to calm international tensions and prevent a costly nuclear arms race with Russia and China. Ratifying the test ban treaty would be an olive branch of peace to other nuclear powers and encourage disarmament negotiations.

The alternative is to drift along with a dangerous and expensive nuclear arms buildup. The resumption of nuclear test explosions will linger over us without diplomatic action.

Presidents Eisenhower and Kennedy were both right to pursue a treaty ending all nuclear testing. We have to finish the job today and take a big step to make the world safe from nuclear weapons.

Mr. McWhorter’s assertion that “words evolve” and “punctuation does, too” misses the mark. The reason the apostrophe is on the way out is a matter of punctuation devolving on account of texting and other shorthand that robs the English language of its beauty and clarity.

It is the same invitation that the fictional Prof. Henry Higgins offered to Eliza Doolittle, and by the end of the story, having navigated the perils of the rain in Spain, she fools a prominent linguist into thinking she is royalty.

Evelyn Waugh said, “The English language is incomparably rich and can convey every thought accurately and elegantly.” One could argue that the chance to do so, along with possession of the library card that opens up worlds and is available to every resident, are among our most powerful means of erasing classism.

As a retired professor of English, I read with great interest John McWhorter’s essay, in which he suggests (heresy!) that most apostrophes are perhaps unnecessary.

One benefit of his suggestion is that it might eliminate excessive and incorrect use of the apostrophe, which I’ll admit bothers me more than its omission.

As a sample of this problem, I submit a sign that I once glimpsed while driving along a local road: “Free Puppie’s for Sale.” The author of this message was no doubt remembering the rule learned in grammar school for possessives — apostrophe before “s”! — and applying it with too much enthusiasm.

To be sure, removing the apostrophe still leaves the deeper problem of how much we might expect to pay for a free puppy.

Re “ New Centrism Is on the Rise in U.S. Politics ” (front page, May 19):

David Leonhardt’s account of “neopopulist bipartisanship” is important for Americans to hear, because it shows that some good things are happening in Washington. But to deliver meaningful legislative victories to the American public and avoid the pitfalls of polarization, Democrats and Republicans must come together to practice bipartisan, fact-based oversight of enacted policies.

Too often Congress enacts solutions to major societal problems but then doesn’t pay sufficient attention to ensuring effective implementation or transparency around the success of those programs. This can leave the intended beneficiaries of those programs frustrated and disconnected from their government, which can eventually lead to disillusionment and extremism.

The American Rescue Plan , the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and other bipartisan initiatives require thorough oversight from Congress and state legislatures to ensure that the massive amount of funding and authority given is wielded wisely. Even the products of neopopulist bipartisanship can turn sour in just a few years without the right mechanisms to oversee, evaluate, adjust and communicate their implementation.

Re “ Congestion Pricing Expected to Be a Tool, Not a Solution, in Fight Against Pollution ” (news article, May 30):

The planned congestion pricing program is controversial, generating strong pros and cons. Here is a suggestion: The M.T.A. and the governor should announce that the congestion pricing program will begin as an experiment for a set period (for example, six months or one year).

After that period, the program could be evaluated to determine its benefits and harms. After the evaluation, the program would either be discontinued or, more likely, be modified to address problems and concerns.
