How to write a cover letter for an electrical engineering internship

When writing a cover letter as an intern here are some of the things to include in the letter:

  • Mention your fresh knowledge. Use your recent learning experiences to your advantage; an employer might be more willing to hire you if they know you can help their business acclimate to new technologies or practices.
  • Express your energy and enthusiasm. It shows the potential motivation you will bring to a job as a fresh college graduate.
  • Check your grammar and proofread your letter. It is a way of showing employers your ability to write comprehensive, error-free messages.
  • The first step is addressing the employer with a formal salutation. For example, “Dear/Hello (name of the recipient).” If you do not know the name of the recipient, you can refer to them as the hiring manager.
  • The next step is to state the position you are applying for and how you found the opening.
  • Make a brief statement about why you’re interested in the position.
  • Since you are a recent graduate, it would help to emphasize your college coursework, internships and other experiences that show your employability.
  • Ensure your qualifications are similar to the job position.
  • Conclude your letter with a forward-looking statement. For example, “I look forward to discussing the position with you further.”

Dear Hiring Manager,

I am excited to be applying for Crane & Jenkins’ Engineering Intern position. I am a third-year engineering student at Green Valley State University. My degree emphasis is in Civil Engineering, and I have completed 75% of my major’s requirements, including the required classes as outlined in your job description. What has motivated me to apply to this position is your firm’s participation in several key infrastructure projects near my home and the ability for this position to be a part of that work.

Last summer, I worked as an Engineering Intern for TradeLot, a large retail enterprise with locations across the United States. I worked directly with their small engineering team to develop structural and property plans for several of their franchises, and several of my designs were approved for their final planning stage. Although your job description prefers someone with an interest in both structural and property engineering, I have experience in both and am eager to continue in these lines of engineering work.

My academic accomplishments also exceed your requirements. I currently have a 3.9/4.0 GPA in all coursework and a 3.9/4.0 in my major. Earlier this year, my school’s engineering department recognized me as the top junior engineering student, which is also a reflection on my leadership, project, and teamwork skills. These traits will transfer to your internship position and make a noticeable contribution to Crane & Jenkins.

Thank you for reviewing my background in consideration for your internship opportunity. I would be encouraged to have the opportunity to meet with you to discuss more details of my coursework, prior internship, and other experiences relative to your position and company.

Working at TU/e

Engd measurements in sensory guided thermotherapy, job description.

Are you fascinated by the application of electromagnetics to healthcare? Do you want to improve cancer treatment using advanced sensor technology? The SENS-THERM project has vacancies for highly motivated EngD students. You will work on techniques for sensing and controlling thermotherapy, using MRI temperature measurements to validate and improve these. You will use modelling and experimentation to validate your findings, leading to potential clinical trials and a certified medical device.

Job Description

In this project you will work on a project aimed at developing a reliable and simple quality assurance (QA) system for head and neck (H&N) thermotherapy (TT) applicators. The main objective of this project is to quantitatively control the power deposition and heating delivered to a patient during a TT treatment. To achieve this, the optimal sensor technology for instantaneous and dynamic 3D electric field measurements will be identified and integrated into patient anatomy mimicking setups. A user-friendly interface and workflow will be developed for wider adoption. To validate the device, a new measurement strategy based on MR thermometry will be implemented on the Erasmus MC. Therefore, while working on the electromagnetic sensing, there will be a close collaboration with the radiotherapy group of the Erasmus MC for validation. The close collaboration in this project with Sensius BV in Rotterdam ensures a timely commercial launch.

Job requirements

  • A master’s degree (or an equivalent university degree) in  in Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics or equivalent, with excellent grades.
  • A design-oriented attitude.
  • Ability to work in a team and interested in collaborating with the industrial partners.
  • Fluent in spoken and written English.
  • multiphysics and numerical modelling;
  • microwave sensing technology using integrated circuit and optical techniques;
  • Knowledge in tissue-mimicking phantoms;
  • Solid coding skills, e.g. in Matlab, Python, or equivalent are an advantage.

Conditions of employment

A meaningful job in a dynamic and ambitious university, in an international setting with a close relationship to industry. You will work on a beautiful, green campus within walking distance of the central train station. In addition, we offer you:

  • Full-time employment for two years.
  • Salary and benefits (such as a pension scheme, paid pregnancy and maternity leave, partially paid parental leave) in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, scale TOIO  (€2,618).
  • A year-end bonus of 8.3% and annual vacation pay of 8%.
  • To support you during your EngD and to prepare you for the rest of your career, you will have free access to a personal development program for EngD trainees.
  • An excellent technical infrastructure, on-campus children's day care and sports facilities.
  • An allowance for commuting, working from home and internet costs.
  • A Staff Immigration Team and a tax compensation scheme (the 30% facility) for international candidates.
