Lately I have found myself craving very chill book related content, as I have been stuck in a very long reading slump but I also want to keep up with the latest releases. So I tend to turn to YouTube book reviews.

If you are a part of the book community online, you probably have fallen down the rabbit hole that is BookTube. From cozy reading vlogs to book hauls and wrap-ups, there is something for everyone, even if, like me, you were a bit scared for the sheer amount of City of Bones or Sarah J. Mass there when you first discovered BookTube, don’t worry. The community has grown and diversified, with genres and topics for any taste. In this post, I wanted to highlight some review BookTubers, so that if you are looking to explore more in-depth reviews, want some book recommendations, or just a good laugh, you have some excellent places to start.

BookTube Channels for YouTube Book Reviews

The poptimist.

By far, one of my favorite reviewers on the platform, The Poptimist is almost exclusively a review channel. By all metrics, he is an unconventional BookTuber in that regard, but his super in-depth and top-notch GIF game reviews make every book he talks about super interesting. Whenever he uploads, I know that my TBR is about to grow.

Reading With Cindy

Do you want to laugh your socks off? Look no further than Reading With Cindy. I can safely say one of the funniest people on YouTube. With self-aware and critical humor, her channel is refreshing, with its hyper-analytical rant reviews.

Jean Bookish Thoughts

Jean was one of the first creators I started following when I joined BookTube, and I am still in awe whenever she posts. I would define her content as a mix of fantasy and intellectual; she is getting her PhD in ancient history, and always has excellent recommendations for most genres. Still, I would say her specialty is fantasy and political books. She has also started doing videos that are several short reviews in one go, which are nice if you just want a quick opinion.

Bowties & Books

With lots of energy and a super cool TBR card game, Bowties and Books is the perfect channel if you are looking for mini-reviews/recommendations, to expand your TBR with lots of great LGBTQ and diverse books.

Chanelle Time

Another very funny creator, Chanelle is awesome. Her book reviews combined with makeup tutorials make you feel like you are just having out with one of your funniest friends and talking about books, what more could you ask for?

Ariel Bissett

Ariel Bissett is one of the most expansive creators on BookTube, with a channel that has evolved from your traditional YouTube book reviews and hauls to a documentary miniseries on bookstores and music and book combo reviews. Her videos are well thought out and researched and it definitely shows her range and creativity.

Savidge Reads

Simon’s videos always feel very cozy to me, his wrap up reviews are very interesting, and I feel like he truly thinks about his reading in a more analytical way. So, if you just want to learn about some more books and watch a soothing video, check out his channel.

Paperback Dreams

You want to have ups and downs, honest and funny commentary? Look no further. Paperback Dreams is a great channel if you want your reviews to go through the motions; many times she even vlogs her reading process together with the reviews, so you can see her opinions throughout the entire books as she goes.

Starlah Reads

Starlah Reads does the more traditional formate of reviews, generally in her Best/Worst books of the year videos. But what I like the most is her series “Author Anew” in which she reads a new book from an author she has not liked in the past. These are part vlog, part review.

Jessica Nicole Dickerson

Jessica has a super fun and light energy channel and her reviews combined with wrap-ups always put me in a chill mood. She definitely spends a good amount of time and detail in each book, without spoiling or overlooking content.

Jurassic Reads

With a wide range of genres, Angel does great reviews about both new releases and backlist titles. So if you want to explore anything from romance to sci-fi and horror, she is always a good and reliable source for YouTube book reviews.

Perpetual Pages

One of the most dynamic reviewers on BookTube, Adri has something for everyone. However, I particularly appreciate their reviews, as I feel they are super in-depth without being too long, and the topics they choose to approach when analyzing their reading really resonate with me.

Brown Girl Reading

A more straightforward reviewer, I love turning to her channel whenever I am unsure about a book. Her reviews are deeply honest and very interesting; she is not afraid to speak her mind even on super hyped books.

A Book Olive

Olive reads and reviews almost exclusively adult fiction and nonfiction, which makes her a rare reviewer on BookTube. She does dedicated reviews as also the more traditional wrap-up reviews. If you are looking for a pandemic-related book, she has recently uploaded a very good summary of Spillover by David Quammen.

What Kamil Reads

Kamil’s channel is almost exclusively review based, and with reason. His reviews have historical backgrounds, language analysis, and a very in-depth explanation of why he did or did not like a book.

Her videos are simple, straightforward, and to the point. The most unique thing about her channel is the fact that every video has Closed Captions. 2. PolandBananasBooks

As one of the biggest BookTube celebrities out there, with over 400,000 subscribers at the time of writing, Christine Riccio's channel is a must.

She's full of energy and does a wide variety of book-based videos including book talks, book reviews, sketches, comedy videos, book-related discussions, and more. StoryTime at Awnie's House is a BookTube channel dedicated to stories for kids. The narrator---Awnie herself---has hundreds of videos in her library. In each video, she reads well-known children's stories while displaying the pictures and text from the book on the screen.

We're not that sure any book will ever be as good as a piece of chocolate cake, but if anything is going to convince you otherwise, it's this YouTube channel.

Over the years, the channel has explored fiction and non-fiction, works from everywhere from Latin America to Japan, poetry, classic authors, and even books about music. You can find all of the channel's old content neatly organized in the public playlists, ready for you to dig into.

Watch for:  Honest, clever book reviews. Fun book-related videos. Generally YA and fantasy genres.

Kat O'Keefe is another of the big BookTubers, with over 250k subscribers right now. You'll get a lot of classic BookTube content here like book hauls, reviews, reading lists, monthly wrap-ups, book talks, and the occasional book-related tag video.

Believe it or not, YouTube is filled with literary content. For those of us who enjoy the added audio and visuals, head on over to YouTube to watch book reviews, learn about classic literature, and fangirl/fanboy about the latest literary adaptation.

Crash Course: Literature:  You’ve probably heard of John Green, but you may not have heard about Crash Course.

To put it simply: John Green teaches you literature. This series includes Romeo and Juliet , The Great Gatsby , and The Catcher in the Rye , among others.

Thug Notes:  There’s no way I can explain this channel better than the official description: “Yo, what's good? Thug Notes is yo main hookup for classical literature summary and analysis.

Maybe you've read the Cliffs Notes. Maybe you even read the book. But you ain't know sh*t until you watched the Thug Notes, homie.”

Yulin Kuang’s I Didn’t Write This Series: A literary adaptation series. Yulin Kuang adapts and directs excerpts of popular literature and poetry.

Books & Quills:  Sanne is one of many BookTubers (books + YouTube, get it?). She vlogs about a whole bunch of literary things: book hauls, book reviews, and random thoughts on the art of reading.

The Readables:  The Readables is another BookTuber channel. Priscilla does a lot of TAG videos (she comes up with questions, answers them, and prompts other YouTube users to film videos with their own responses) and has a new Top 5 Wednesday series. She’s also a graphic artist, so her videos look spectacular!

The Lizzie Bennet Diaries:  In case you still haven’t watched this: The Lizzie Bennet Diaries is a modern adaptation of Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. It’s a year-long video diary series developed by Hank Green (1/2 of Vlog Brothers) and Bernie Su.

Geek & Sundry’s Talkin’ Comics Weekly:  I’ll let you guess what this one’s about. It’s a great overview for new comics fans, covering a variety of topics about the wonderful world of comic books.

The Problem With Bridgerton Is Becoming Hard to Ignore

Three seasons in, netflix’s hit series is still endless ballrooms and gowns..

The new season of Bridgerton , in which fan-favorite spinster gossip columnist Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) finally gets together with her longtime crush Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton), is just as much of a confection as the preceding two (or three, if you count the prequel, Queen Charlotte ). The people are gorgeous, the dresses are stunning, the trees and vines are always perfectly manicured and in bloom, and the action unfolds in a London so green and smokeless you’d barely know the story takes place in the Regency period.

All of this glossy smoothness is what we have come to expect from Bridgerton . Its much-debated multiracial casting practices, which have come accompanied by some small (and, to me, unconvincing) degree of world building explaining Black participation in the aristocracy, create a feeling that this world is a little bit to the side of history, largely unanchored in time and space. To the show’s credit, that’s part of what makes watching it so pleasurable, and other series, like Apple TV+ offering The Buccaneers , have imitated this frothy-fun vibe, to varying degrees of success.

However, this time around, after watching the batch of episodes released as Part 1 of this new season, I—much like the “on-the-shelf” Penelope—confess myself exhausted by standing at the edges of all these endless ballrooms, watching these sumptuously dressed rich people do their dancing and exchange their speaking glances. After the fourth or so installment turning on the events at so-and-so’s musicale or so-and-so’s luncheon, I find myself thirsting for a different setting and different stakes. That second-season flirtation between Eloise Bridgerton and the young printer’s apprentice was awkwardly executed, but Lord help me: I missed it. Just as there are no seasons besides spring in the Bridgerton -verse, there are no real poor, working-class, or middle-class characters in this show. Even the servants don’t have lives. Everything exists to move the pretty people around the ballroom floor.

Of course, this is what the source material— the Bridgerton novels , by Julia Quinn—is like too. Very rarely does anyone who’s not a member of the aristocracy, or at least a wealthy parvenu like Penelope or the illegitimate child of an aristocrat, get a turn in the plot spotlight. Questions of impending deprivation are always kept at the outskirts of the narrative, remaining hypothetical and never threatening the Bridgertons, who are, after all, the people we care about. This family is, thanks to their late father’s and then their punctilious oldest brother Anthony’s fine management of their estate, represented as being quite financially secure. Their unhappiness, if they have any, is in their heads. For the non-Bridgertons of page and screen, questions of financial ruin often loom but never quite seem to strike. The second-season heroine, Kate Sharma, had a “shopkeeper” father and needs to marry her sister off to someone in the aristocracy in order to secure financial support; the Featheringtons always seem to be barely evading some kind of disaster. But at the core of the story is comfort and abundance.

Season 3 even takes the first two seasons’ few actual working-class characters, the Mondriches (Martins Imhangbe and Emma Naomi), and makes their young son a baron through the death of some distant relative. Now the Mondriches are no longer a boxer and his wife, or even the owners of a gentleman’s club, as they became in Season 2: They are, like everyone else, patricians of leisure. They must reconcile themselves to upholding aristocratic propriety by eschewing work, concentrating instead on planning the best possible parties. That means the small escape from the ton that the Mondriches offered is gone; we’re back on the edges of the ballroom, seeing who’s looking at who, again ! My feet are tired.

This very limited class milieu is part of what makes reading historical romance novels, and consuming their televisual adaptations, pleasurable for some. But not everyone does historical romance like this. A good counterexample among literary historical romances is Longbourn , by Jo Baker, which turns Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice around and narrates it from the point of view of the servants in the Bennet household, telling the story of a romance between a housemaid and a footman. This is not a Downton Abbey –style “upstairs/downstairs” tale, set in a mansion where the servants are also part of an elevated class by dint of their employment in a grand house. It’s a story of overworked servants employed by a family living beyond their means. The servants have to sweep the cobwebs out of the corners of the guest rooms on short notice and dread coping with the extra burden of laundry that visitors bring and the late nights waiting up when family members go out to balls. They are exhausted and constantly sniping at one another. That exhaustion becomes part of the story of the romance; the hero does the daily work of laying the kitchen fire for the heroine before she gets up, for example, and that’s part of what makes her love him.

Longbourn is not a product strictly of the romance genre. But many other more traditionally structured and marketed historical romance novels also play with class. Alice Coldbreath’s Victorian Prizefighters series features working- and middle-class people who barely have any contact at all with lords and ladies. Women’s work is a frequent plot point; the heroine of one of these stories knows that her man’s for real when he protects her from his evil mother’s constant demands that she take over her daily chores. Cecilia Grant’s Regency Blackshear Family series contains one barnburner of a story, with a heroine who’s a former “kept” woman who falls in love with a veteran of the Battle of Waterloo suffering from a case of PTSD. Sarah MacLean sets many of her novels partially in the demimonde, and even Lisa Kleypas, who loves the aristocratic and wealthy, gives the family in her excellent Ravenels series a serious economic problem that’s grounded in actual history: How can one be a lord at a time when tenant farming is no longer going to support an estate? The answer involves some standing around at functions, to be sure, but much more digging of irrigation ditches.

I don’t just wish for Bridgerton viewers seeking pure pleasure to have to eat their vegetables of historical accuracy or class awareness. Not every show needs to represent everyone, and indeed, it would be a doomed project to try. But, three seasons in, what I miss in Netflix’s Bridgerton and its source material is texture : that sense of variety, in story, experience, and action. Without it, there’s a flatness to the world and all the glittering little figurines inhabiting it. It seems odd to say about a series that became famous for its sex, but I wish that the Bridgertons and the people they fall in love with had bodies . Would it kill someone to break a sweat around here for once? I know for sure that other people are doing their laundry.
