New research shows that most people killed by police die at the hands of local law enforcement officers
“These results show you where our focus should be when putting together policies to change things,” said BCSSW Assistant Professor Robert O. Motley Jr., one of the study’s lead authors.
A study by the School’s Racism-based Violence Injury and Prevention Lab found that local law enforcement officers were responsible for 86.7 percent of fatal encounters that took place between 2013 and 2023.

The study, co-authored by BCSSW Professor Summer Sherburne Hawkins, found limited associations between recreational cannabis legalization and retail sales with adolescent substance use.

The bachelor of social work (BSW) program at Salem State prepares you to be a catalyst for social change, founded in the values of social justice, inclusion, diversity, and cultural humility. You’ll receive a thorough background in the theories of social work, research skills, and learn how social policies impact individuals, families, organizations, and communities. A senior year internship will provide an opportunity to learn to apply these skills in the field, preparing you for a career in social work.

Students minoring in social work are not eligible for state licensing upon graduation but may find this preparation helpful in selecting a career direction or in considering graduate school in social work.
All students may enroll in certain courses offered to non-majors on a space available basis. Non-majors who wish advising regarding clustering courses to reach individual learning goals should consult with the BSW program coordinator.
Graduate Degrees
The Salem State University MSW Program offers students a comprehensive MSW experience focused on integrated practice for health and behavioral health. This is a flexible program that offers students the opportunity to create a unique MSW experience through their choices of electives and field placements. Students can complete the program in two or more years. Options available include an Online Program , Advanced Standing option available for those with a BSW degree, and our Fall Start Program which has flexible completion times.

The PhD in Social Work is a competitive full-time program of study designed to enable significant development of competency in social work values and ethics, theory, research methods, a substantive interdisciplinary specialization, and teaching.
The program features a 63-credit plan with coursework completed in four semesters (two years). Specifically, we require a minimum of 27 credit hours in research methods courses, which includes quantitative and qualitative approaches, 12 credit hours in a specialization, 16 credit hours in core social work courses, and 8 credit hours in teaching methods and training.
We are pleased to offer a generous multi-year funding package of up to five years, which includes tuition, paid stipends, and health care. PhD students are funded through a combination of tuition scholarships, and research and teaching assistantships. While students gain hands-on research and teaching experience, assistantships supported by the School of Social Work are paid as stipends during the eight-month academic year.

The Network for Professional Education at BUSSW delivers a comprehensive array of high-quality training and workforce solutions to support health and social service professionals and organizations. Available both online and in-person, our programs cover a wide range of subject areas and meet rigorous credentialing requirements for continuing education credits (CEs). Our trainings are relevant and applicable, providing expertise and knowledge derived from real-life experience and grounded in current research. Each offering is developed as a skill-based program, targeting specific competencies, and designed to be user-friendly.
The School is an approved provider of Continuing Education Credits (CECs) and has been authorized by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Board of Social Work Registration to approve offerings from other institutions for CECs.
Discounts for current BUSSW students, alumni, field instructors, and faculty advisors are available. Group discounts also available.
