1,000 Best Free Audio Books on Spotify

We’ve just added over 500 new audio books from Spotify into our Free Audio & Video Directory . That brings our total number of Spotify audio books to over 1,000. Check out this playlist on Spotify:

In addition to music and podcasts, Spotify has increasingly become a destination for audiobooks. In order to listen to these audiobooks you’ll need a free Spotify account. You can listen for free with occasional ads, and they also have Spotify apps for easier listening on your computer or smart phone. If you want to listen ad-free and you love music as well, we can’t recommend Spotify Premium highly enough.

One of the issues with Spotify and audio books is finding the best audio books they have to offer. We’ve scoured through Spotify to find the highest quality audio books you can learn from and below we’ll list the publishers that have added many of their titles to Spotify. Browse through these publishers on our site and find some great audio books to listen to on Spotify today!

Note: It’s come to our attention that free users of Spotify can no longer play albums or playlists in order on mobile. Spotify mobile apps force free users to play in shuffle mode. Pretty annoying for audiobooks! If you’re not a Spotify Premium user and you want to play these audiobooks in order, you’ll need to play them on your desktop or tablet. Sorry!

Spotify Podcasts & Audio Books – For titles that didn’t fit under another publisher, we’ve added them to our Spotify publisher page. Here you’ll find some classic literature audio books that Spotify has published with professional narrators, along with some podcasts that are exclusive to Spotify. There are also spoken word albums of speeches, poetry readings, comedy, and a lot more.

Made for Success Audio Books – We feature over 250 audio programs from Made for Success which are available on Spotify and YouTube. They specialize in original audio programs to motivate you in your personal and professional life.

L.A. Theatre Works Audio Books – The best publisher of audio theatre has added over 80 of their plays to Spotify. You’ll find classic plays such as Twelve Angry Men and much more.

Penton Overseas Language Learning Audio Books – This publisher has added over 50 of their “Learn in Your Car” language learning audio programs to Spotify. Learn French, Spanish, Italian, Chinese, German, English as a Second Language, and more.

Scholastic Audio Books – Scholastic Audio specializes in contemporary books for kids and offers about 50 of their audio books on Spotify including The Hunger Games .

Speechworks Audio Books – If you like great speeches, then Speechworks features over 25 collections of original recordings of amazing speeches on Spotify.

Vibrance Press Audio Books – This publisher offers over 50 of their unabridged audio books on Spotify, mostly in the areas of personal growth.

BN Publishing Audio Books – Check out over 50 classic self help audio programs from BN Publishing on Spotify. Mixed in are some great speeches, classic radio programs, and other historic recordings.

CSA Word Audio Books – If you want to listen to classic literature in abridged format, then CSA Word has over 50 audio books that typically run 2-3 hours in length. These abridged classics feature outstanding professional narrators.

Saland Publishing Audio Books – Love Shakespeare? Saland Publishing offers over 25 full cast Shakespeare plays on Spotify with many superb actors.

Krishnamurti Foundation of America Audio Books – Listen to 30 audio programs from the renowned spiritual teacher Jiddu Krishnamurti on Spotify.

Smithsonian Folkways Recordings Audio Books – Smithsonian Folkways publishes a lot of music, but they also have released some great spoken word collections. We feature 15 of them from Spotify.

Musically Speaking Audio Books – Take a journey through classical music with over twenty “Conductor’s Guides” to some of the greatest music ever composed!

Osho Audio Books – Over 20 talks on Spotify from the famous spiritual guru Osho, also known as Bhagwan Shri Rajneesh (featured in the popular Netflix documentary Wild Wild Country ).

NAXOS Audio Books – Listen to 27 hour-long introductions of famous operas and 11 4-hour-long composer biographies from NAXOS. They’re all on Spotify and we’ve collected them here on a blog post.

Earworms Audio Books – Over 15 language learning programs featuring essential words and phrases in Spanish, French, German, Russian, Italian, Japanese, and more.

The Relaxation Company Audio Books – The Relaxation Company offers over 30 of their pioneering audio programs on Spotify to help your relax with meditations, guided relaxations, and audio sleep aids.

There are even more audio books than that on Spotify, but the 1,000 audio books from these publishers we think are the best!

Just over a year later, on October 3, 2023, they announced that audiobooks would become part of the Spotify Premium package . This made Spotify a one-stop destination for just about all listening needs: music, podcasts , and now audiobooks.

But is it worth it? Let’s find out. If you have decided it is, in fact, worth it, but you’re struggling to figure out how to actually make a purchase or listen to an audiobook on Spotify Premium, let’s go over that too.

A note: Spotify audiobooks are only available in little more than a handful of countries, so check that yours is one of them before continuing.

How to Buy an Audiobook on Spotify

The first step is making sure that you’re on the web application, as you can’t buy on your phone app just yet. Go to the Search icon, then to the Audiobooks tab. You have almost 400,000 titles to choose from: once you’ve settled on one, click Play and select the Get email option.

screenshot of search tab in Spotify web app showing tiles for Podcasts, Audiobooks, and Live Events

After this, go to your inbox and look for the email that Spotify sent you. Click on Buy audiobook, and you’ll be redirected to the book page. Then choose Buy, follow the checkout process, and voilá! You have an audiobook.

While you can only buy a book on the web app, you can listen on any device. In order to ensure that you have access to it even offline, go to Your Library, click on the Audiobooks tab, and download your book.

Audiobooks on Spotify Premium

As of the October 2023 announcement, Premium users in the UK and Australia were allowed 15 hours of audiobook listening every month, with U.S. users joining later in the year. They were given access to a catalog of (as of now) 200,000 titles.

But how do you listen to an audiobook on Premium? Go to the catalog and look for audiobooks marked “included in Premium.” Hit play on the first chapter, and you’re good to go.

Search and Discoverability

You can find an audiobook by author or title by typing it into Search just like you would for a song or podcast. Selections are also curated for you much in the way Spotify’s music is, with groupings by genre, author, mood, activity, and more. Some examples below:

screenshot of genre categories in Spotify Audiobooks on the web app

Pros and Cons

Let’s start with the cons: first of all, it’s regionally limited. Barely more than a handful of countries have access to audiobooks on Spotify. If you’re not in the U.S., Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia, or New Zealand, you’ll have to stick to Audible, Everand, and a few other platforms for your audiobook needs.

The next issue is with Spotify Premium specifically: you only have 15 listening hours per month. This is a marked difference from Audible subscriptions, where you get a credit for a full book per month, regardless of how long that book is, as well as a ton of available audiobooks to borrow. If you’re into 19th-century classics (or George R. R. Martin), you know that 15 hours just isn’t going to cut it. For context, the audiobook of A Game of Thrones is a whopping 33 hours and 46 minutes long.

Another possible con to consider if you’re thinking of going with the Premium subscription solely for audiobooks is that not all premium accounts have access to this feature. Spotify Family and Spotify Duo plans only grant access to the plan manager, and those are limited to 10 hours a month. If you have an individual account, however, you can access 15 hours of audiobooks per month. But, in the pro column, you do have the option to purchase a 10-hour top-up.

And then there’s the issue that was, admittedly, my first concern when Spotify got into audiobooks: what it’s going to mean for authors. According to the British Union Society of Authors, authors and agents weren’t consulted on license or payment terms before publishers struck deals with Spotify . And since it’s a well-publicized fact that streaming sites have harmed artists , this gives me the biggest pause. Johnny Geller, an agent at Curtis Brown Literary Agency, said, “ We do not want to follow the disastrous path the music industry went down .”

There are, of course, pros, too! If you have an individual Spotify Premium account in one of the aforementioned countries, you don’t have to tie yourself to any one book that you don’t know for sure you’ll love. You can try different audiobooks until you find the one that works for you.

As mentioned previously, you have the option to add more listening hours if the 15 included with your Premium subscription aren’t enough.

Another pro: the selection for Spotify Premium appears to be a good one, with 70 percent of its catalog comprised of bestselling titles .

There is also the convenience of having access to music, podcasts, and audiobooks all in a single app. If you listen to a lot of music and podcasts and up to a couple of audiobooks of average length a month, then you’re getting a lot for the price of your subscription.

So, Is It Worth It?

This will ultimately depend on the person. Hopefully, with the information above, you can make a choice that works for you. Happy listening!

Signing Up For Spotify

If you’re new to Spotify, the first step is to create an account. To get started, visit the Spotify website or download the Spotify app on your mobile device.

Once you have the app installed, open it and click on the “Sign Up” or “Create Account” button. You will be asked to provide some basic information such as your email address, username, and password. Alternatively, you can sign up using your Facebook account for a quicker registration process.

After entering your details, click on the “Sign Up” button. You may also need to agree to Spotify’s terms and conditions. Once you’ve completed the sign-up process, you will be taken to the Spotify dashboard where you can start exploring the platform.

Next, it is recommended to set up your profile by adding a profile picture and personalizing your display name. You can also connect your Spotify account to your social media profiles, allowing you to easily share your favorite audiobooks with friends and see what they’re listening to.

Spotify offers both free and premium subscriptions. While the free version allows you to access a limited range of features, upgrading to Spotify Premium provides additional benefits such as ad-free listening, offline mode, and higher audio quality. If you’re a serious audiobook enthusiast, the premium subscription is well worth the investment.

To upgrade to Spotify Premium, click on the “Upgrade” or “Get Premium” button within the app or on the Spotify website. You will be prompted to enter your payment information and choose a subscription plan. Spotify offers different payment options, including credit cards, PayPal, and mobile payment services.

Once you’ve upgraded to Premium, you will have access to all the features necessary for an enhanced audiobook listening experience on Spotify.

Searching for Audiobooks on Spotify

Now that you’re all set up on Spotify, it’s time to start exploring the vast collection of audiobooks the platform has to offer. Spotify makes it easy to find audiobooks by utilizing its powerful search functionality.

To begin your search, open the Spotify app or website and locate the search bar. Enter the title, author, or keywords related to the audiobook you’re looking for. Spotify will provide you with a list of relevant results, including both audiobooks and other related content.

You can filter the search results by selecting the “Audiobook” category, which will display only the audiobooks available on Spotify. This helps narrow down your search and ensures you find exactly what you’re looking for.

If you’re not sure of a specific title but are interested in a particular genre or topic, Spotify has curated playlists and categories that make it easier to discover new audiobooks. Browse through the “Audiobooks” section or check out themed playlists like “Best-Selling Thrillers” or “Motivational Audiobooks.”

Additionally, Spotify’s recommendation engine uses algorithms to suggest audiobooks based on your listening habits and preferences. The more you listen to audiobooks and interact with the platform, the better Spotify becomes at recommending content tailored to your tastes.

Once you’ve found an audiobook that catches your interest, click on it to access the audiobook’s profile page. Here, you can see additional information about the audiobook, such as the author, narrator, runtime, and a brief description. You can also find user reviews and ratings to help you decide if the audiobook is worth a listen.

Spotify provides an efficient and user-friendly interface for discovering and exploring audiobooks. With its robust search capabilities and personalized recommendations, you’ll have no trouble finding your next captivating listen on Spotify.

Creating a Playlist for Audiobooks

Playlists are a fantastic way to organize and curate your favorite audiobooks on Spotify. By creating a dedicated playlist for audiobooks, you can easily access and listen to your preferred titles whenever you want.

To create a playlist, open the Spotify app or website and navigate to the “Your Library” or “Playlists” section. Click on the “Create Playlist” button and give your playlist a descriptive name, such as “Audiobook Favorites” or “Thriller Audiobooks.”

Once you’ve named your playlist, you can customize it further by adding a cover image. You can choose an image from Spotify’s collection or upload your own to give your playlist a personal touch.

To add audiobooks to your playlist, search for the desired audiobook using the search bar or navigate to the audiobook’s profile page. On the profile page, you’ll find a button or icon that allows you to add the audiobook to a playlist. Select your desired playlist from the drop-down menu, and the audiobook will be added to your playlist.

Feel free to add as many audiobooks as you like to your playlist. You can arrange them in any order you prefer by dragging and dropping the tracks within the playlist. This way, you can create a curated listening experience that suits your preferences.

In addition to adding individual audiobooks, you can also add entire audiobook series or multi-part titles to your playlist. Just make sure to select all the parts or episodes and add them to the playlist together for seamless playback.

Creating separate playlists for different genres or categories can help you easily navigate and find the audiobooks you’re in the mood for. For example, you can have a playlist for mystery novels, a playlist for self-help books, and another for biographies.

Remember that you can also follow and subscribe to other users’ playlists that feature audiobooks. This allows you to explore new recommendations and discover hidden gems curated by fellow audiobook enthusiasts.

By creating playlists for your favorite audiobooks, you can stay organized and build a personalized collection that reflects your literary interests. With just a few clicks, you’ll have a dedicated playlist ready for hours of immersive audiobook listening.

Saving Audiobooks for Offline Listening

One of the great features of Spotify is the ability to save audiobooks for offline listening. This is especially useful when you want to enjoy your favorite books while on the go, without needing an internet connection.

To save an audiobook for offline listening, follow these simple steps:

  • Open the Spotify app on your mobile device or desktop.
  • Find the audiobook you want to save for offline listening by searching for it or navigating to its profile page.
  • On the audiobook’s profile page, you’ll see a toggle switch or button that says “Download” or “Save.” Click on it to save the audiobook to your device.
  • The audiobook will now be downloaded and saved to your device’s local storage. You can find your downloaded audiobooks in the “Library” or “Your Library” section of the Spotify app.
  • To access your downloaded audiobooks, go to the “Library” section and select the “Downloads” tab. Here, you’ll find all the audiobooks and other downloaded content.
  • When listening to an audiobook that’s been downloaded, Spotify will automatically switch to offline mode to preserve your mobile data or when you’re not connected to Wi-Fi.

Keep in mind that Spotify Premium subscribers have a limit on the number of tracks or audiobooks they can download for offline listening. This limit varies depending on your device and subscription plan. You can check your account settings to see your specific download limit.

If you reach your download limit but want to download additional audiobooks, you can remove previously downloaded ones from your device. Simply go to the settings within the Spotify app and find the option to clear your downloaded content. Once you’ve done this, you’ll be able to download new audiobooks and continue enjoying your offline listening experience.

Saving audiobooks for offline listening is a convenient feature that ensures you can enjoy your favorite books even when you don’t have an internet connection. Whether you’re traveling, commuting, or simply prefer to conserve data, Spotify’s offline mode allows you to take your audiobooks with you wherever you go.

Adjusting Playback Options

Spotify offers various playback options to customize your audiobook listening experience. From playback speed to sleep timers, these options allow you to tailor the audiobook playback to your preferences.

Here are the key playback options available on Spotify:

  • Playback Speed: Adjusting the playback speed allows you to control the pace at which the audiobook is played. You can choose to speed up the narration for a faster listening experience or slow it down to follow along more comfortably. Spotify offers options to increase or decrease the playback speed, typically ranging from 0.5x to 2x the normal speed.
  • Sleep Timers: If you enjoy falling asleep to audiobooks, you can set a sleep timer to automatically stop playback after a specified duration. This ensures that you won’t miss any important parts or waste battery power while you sleep.
  • Bookmarking: Spotify allows you to bookmark specific moments in an audiobook, making it easy to return to particular passages or sections. To bookmark a moment, simply tap or click on the bookmark icon during playback, and the audiobook will be marked for future reference.
  • Equalizer: Enhance the audio quality of your audiobooks by adjusting the equalizer settings. Spotify offers pre-configured equalizer presets that optimize the sound output based on different genres or personal preferences. You can choose from options like “Vocal Booster,” “Bass Boost,” and “Acoustic,” or customize your own settings.
  • Crossfade: The crossfade feature allows for a seamless transition between audiobook tracks. You can adjust the duration of the crossfade effect to create a smooth flow between chapters or parts of an audiobook.

Sorting and Organizing Audiobooks

As your audiobook collection grows, it’s important to keep it organized and easy to navigate. Spotify provides various features to help you sort and organize your audiobooks, ensuring you can quickly find the titles you want to listen to.

Here are some tips for sorting and organizing your audiobooks on Spotify:

  • Playlists: We discussed earlier how playlists can be used to create collections of audiobooks. Consider creating playlists based on genres, authors, or even mood. This will make it easier to navigate and locate specific audiobooks within your collection.
  • Favoriting: You can easily mark your favorite audiobooks by clicking or tapping the heart icon on the audiobook’s profile page. This will add the audiobook to your “Liked Songs” library. Access your “Liked Songs” library to see all your favorited audiobooks in one place.
  • Sorting Options: Spotify provides sorting options to arrange your audiobooks in different orders. You can sort your audiobooks by title, author, length, or recently added. Simply click on the sorting option at the top of your library or playlist to apply the desired sorting order.
  • Search Filters: When searching for audiobooks, you can use various search filters to narrow down the results. Some common filters include genre, author, language, and release date. Utilize these filters to quickly find specific types of audiobooks within the vast Spotify library.
  • Renaming Playlists: If you’re using playlists to organize your audiobooks, consider giving them descriptive names to make them easier to identify. You can also update playlist names as your collection evolves, keeping them relevant and meaningful to your audiobook preferences.
  • Collaborative Playlists: Spotify allows you to create collaborative playlists, which can be useful for audiobook sharing and discovery. Collaborative playlists enable others to contribute their favorite audiobooks, making it a fun way to exchange recommendations and share your literary finds with friends.

By utilizing these sorting and organizing features, you can create a well-structured and personalized library of audiobooks on Spotify. This ensures that you can easily find the right audiobook for every mood and moment.

Remember to regularly update and maintain your organization system as you add new audiobooks to your collection. This will help you stay organized and make the most of your audiobook listening experience on Spotify.

Sharing Audiobooks with Friends

One of the joys of audiobooks is being able to share and discuss your favorite titles with friends and fellow book lovers. Spotify provides several ways to share audiobooks with others, making it easy to recommend, discuss, and enjoy audiobooks together.

Here are some methods for sharing audiobooks with friends on Spotify:

  • Direct Sharing: The simplest way to share an audiobook is by directly sharing the link to the audiobook’s profile page. You can do this by tapping or clicking on the ‘Share’ button while viewing the audiobook. Choose the desired sharing method, such as messaging apps, social media platforms, or email, to send the link to your friends.
  • Collaborative Playlists: As mentioned earlier, you can create collaborative playlists on Spotify. This allows you to invite your friends to contribute their favorite audiobooks to a shared playlist. Each person can add their recommendations, creating a collaborative library of audiobooks that everyone can enjoy.
  • Social Media: Spotify makes it easy to share audiobooks on various social media platforms. You can click on the ‘Share’ button and select the social media platform of your choice to post about the audiobook, along with a personalized message or recommendation. You can also add Spotify’s special “Listen on Spotify” feature link to your social media posts, allowing others to directly access the audiobook on Spotify.

Sharing audiobooks with friends not only enhances your own listening experience but also fosters meaningful connections and discussions around literature. Whether it’s through direct messages, social media platforms, or collaborative playlists, Spotify provides various avenues to share, recommend, and enjoy audiobooks together.

So, don’t hesitate to spread the joy of audiobooks with your friends, and discover new titles and authors along the way.

Using Spotify’s Discover and Recommendations Features for Audiobooks

Spotify is renowned for its powerful recommendation algorithms that help users discover new music based on their preferences. However, Spotify’s discover and recommendations features can also be utilized to explore and find exciting new audiobooks to add to your collection.

Here’s how you can make the most of Spotify’s discover and recommendations features when it comes to audiobooks:

  • Discover Weekly: Spotify’s Discover Weekly playlist is a personalized playlist curated just for you. It is updated every week and includes a mix of music tracks as well as audiobooks based on your listening habits. Give it a listen and keep an eye out for any interesting audiobooks that catch your attention.
  • Release Radar: Similar to Discover Weekly, Release Radar is a playlist that showcases new releases from your favorite artists and podcasters. While mainly focused on music, it may occasionally include new audiobook releases or episodes from audiobook podcasts that align with your preferences.
  • Recommended for You: On the Spotify mobile app, you can find a section called “Recommended for You” under the “Browse” tab. This section suggests personalized audiobooks based on your listening history, saved audiobooks, and the genres you enjoy. Explore this section to discover hidden gems that cater to your specific taste.
  • Based on Your Listening: Spotify analyzes your listening behavior to provide recommendations based on similar audiobooks and genres. After listening to an audiobook, you’ll often find recommendations for related titles or audiobooks by the same author or narrator. The more audiobooks you listen to and engage with, the better Spotify becomes at understanding your preferences and providing relevant recommendations.
  • Browse by Genre or Mood: Spotify offers a wide range of genres and mood-based playlists for music, but you can also explore similar playlists in the “Browse” section for audiobooks. Whether you’re in the mood for a thrilling mystery or a soothing self-help audiobook, browse through the genre or mood-based categories to find audiobooks that match your current interests.

Make sure to regularly check these discover and recommendations features on Spotify to uncover new audiobooks, authors, or genres that you may not have encountered otherwise. This can help broaden your literary horizons and introduce you to incredible narratives you might have otherwise missed.

By taking advantage of Spotify’s powerful algorithms and curated playlists, you’ll always have a fresh selection of audiobooks waiting to captivate your imagination.

4 Spotify audiobooks to help shape your journey at university and beyond

spotify audiobooks

As a student, it’s getting harder and harder to find time for leisurely reading . This comes as no surprise, what with deadlines to meet and a healthy social life to balance, on top of other responsibilities like taking care of your mental health and caring for dependents.

The solution? Spotify audiobooks.

As a student, it’s likely that you’re looking at large sections of text on a daily basis, creating issues like sore eyes and the exhaustion that comes with long hours of single-minded focus.

Still, regular reading is proven to be one of the most effective methods for learning. In fact, studies show that reading has many benefits for your wellbeing, including reducing stress, helping combat Alzheimer’s and dementia, and inspiring success.

In this, the introduction of audiobooks — which are becoming widely available these days — offers the perfect solution for the tired-eyed student. Most are accessed through paid platforms like Audible, but there are just as many that can be found online for free .

A popular option for many students is listening to Spotify audiobooks — which you can listen to for free with ads, or without ads with the special Premium for Students discount the platform offers. The music-listening and podcast app offers many genres of books to peruse, from fiction to self-help to historical and informative.

More than that, you won’t need to sacrifice your wallet or your time to read a book — just pop in your earphones on the bus, train or even just while you’re on a walk, and you’re set.

4 Spotify audiobooks every student should listen to

What motivates getting things done by mary lamia.

If you’re a student, chances are you’ve suffered from intense bouts of procrastination, even amidst a looming deadline. “What Motivates Getting Things Done” tackles exactly that — and shows you that although it gets a bad reputation, procrastination is still a valid motivational style that can help you complete your tasks.

Written by psychologist Dr. Mary Lamia, this book delves into the role anxiety plays in motivating you to get your work done. Specifically, Lamia points out two ways we work with our anxiety: task-oriented, where we complete tasks in a step-by-step way, and deadline-oriented, where we rush to finish an assignment right before it’s due for submission.

What’s interesting here is how Lamia refuses to consider one approach better than the other. “Lamia provides illuminating insights into the positive and negative emotions that shape these attributes as well as a troubleshooting guide that offers concrete suggestions on ways to successfully harness stress and clear that to-do list,” shares Professor of Literature Michael Krasny in a review .

Now What, Grad? by Chris Palmer

Have you just graduated, set aside your books, and panicked upon realising you have no idea what to do with your life after university? If so, “Now What, Grad?” is the book you need to be reading right now.

Here, author Chris Palmer tackles everything fresh graduates should know after university, including how to behave professionally, how to be a lifelong learner, finding a job and acing interviews, managing stress, and more.

“The book takes readers by the hand and guides them step-by-step through the most difficult parts of that transition [into working life],” says Washington Post columnist Jay Mathews. “I love the emphasis on thinking first about what you really want and identifying those happy parts of your life that already hold clues to what you should be doing.”

Why Do I Feel Like An Impostor? by Dr Sandi Mann

Imposter syndrome is a serious issue faced by many students. It’s characterised by feelings of inadequacy even if you achieve or succeed at your goals, making it difficult to be confident or sure in your skills or abilities — especially if you’re taking a huge step forwards, like entering the job market for the first time.

“Why Do I Feel Like An Imposter?: How to Understand and Cope With Impostor Syndrome” tackles all of this and more. In this deeply insightful book, psychologist Dr. Sandi Mann looks into why 70% of people around the world suffer from imposter syndrome, scientific explanations behind the issue, and why it affects us.

More than that, it’ll help you work out if it affects you through interactive quizzes — and offers tips and tools to overcome it if you do.

The Changemaker Mindset by Ilja Grzeskowitz

Changing the world is something everyone hopes to do at least once in their lives — and nowhere is this more apparent than in students. University is where you go to discover the best of yourself, but also often the place you find your purpose and motivation for what you want to do with your life. Still, to quote Michael Jackson, to make a change you often have to “start with the man in the mirror”.

Spotify audiobooks such as “The Changemaker Mindset: How Innovation and Change Start with Inner Transformation” offer the perfect read. Written by German bestselling author Ilja Grzeskowitz, you’ll learn to invest in your own self-learning and growth to transform into an effective and impactful leader.

TechCrunch Minute: Spotify rolls out an AI-powered playlist feature

Spotify is building on its AI DJ feature , adding a new AI-powered playlist feature. No, this is not merely asking Spotify to spit out, say, metalcore classics from the 2010s, but instead something more of a “my dog is sad and I love the color purple please make me a list of songs “  sort of thing. You can prompt it, and Spotify will come up with a list of tunes for you. How far you can push it remains to be seen, but I do intend to test its guardrails when I get the chance.

Spotify’s AI work nests into its other efforts to differentiate its service from rivals like Apple Music and offerings from Amazon. The European tech giant has also pushed into audiobooks , podcasting  and even edtech in recent years.

Starting in just a few countries, the new AI playlist feature will roll out to more markets over time. How long it will take to reach your hands is not clear, if you, like myself, are not located in the feature’s launch countries. Some Spotify users have complained that the rollout of new products can take longer than they want to reach their home market, it’s worth noting.

Spotify tests video courses to teach everything from music production to Excel

The AI wave crashing into the world of music has yet to make artistry obsolete, but it does appear to be working toward finding a place in how we discover and consume art itself. Perhaps that’s a good working compromise.

By now you may be a little tired of hearing about AI all day, every day. Not that there’s anything wrong with AI news per se; lots of tech companies are working hard to infuse new AI tech into their products and services. It’s a big business story at a minimum. Then there’s the consumer angle, where AI comes closer to our daily lives. But for those of us who aren’t mega-ChatGPT users, AI can seem ever so slightly remote from our regular existence. Tools like Spotify’s latest can bring AI more into how we do our regular, mundane tasks like queueing up new tunes. Or not-so-new tunes, at least according to some users who view Spotify’s playlist work as part of a recurring effort to promote the same songs time and again.

Hit play, let’s have some fun!

Spotify employees question lavish spending on events while the company lays off thousands

  • While Spotify is trying to cut costs, some employees criticize lavish spending on events.
  • It's in the entertainment business, so a certain number of extravagant events are part of the deal.
  • But how much is enough while the company lays off thousands of workers?

Insider Today

Spotify celebrated its annual Wrapped campaign with an exclusive party at a London superclub in November.

Sam Smith took to the stage and sang their popular hit "Unholy" as part of the 3,500-capacity event at Drumsheds, a former Ikea store. Headliners also included Charli XCX and Chase & Status as drinks flowed at the bar.

The celebration was attended by employees, celebrities, the media, and fans who were among the performers' top listeners on Spotify. Another Wrapped party took place in Houston that night, headlined by the rapper Gunna.

Four days later, the company cut 1,500 jobs , including some staff who worked on Wrapped. CEO Daniel Ek sent employees a blunt memo announcing the layoffs and said Spotify's cost structure was still too bloated.

"Economic growth has slowed dramatically and capital has become more expensive," Ek wrote. "Spotify is not an exception to these realities."

Like many companies, Spotify over-hired during the pandemic. It nearly doubled its head count between 2019 and 2022. Then, last year, it cut 2,300 jobs through three rounds of layoffs in January, June, and December.

Some employees think Spotify is spending too much on parties and events, especially when the company is laying off thousands of people and looking to cut more costs. Business Insider spoke with 14 current and former workers who shared details of what they described as poorly timed, extravagant parties. They asked not to be identified discussing sensitive matters.

Spotify is in the entertainment business, so a certain number of extravagant events are part of the deal. But these employees said event spending had gone too far, given the company's broader efforts at frugality.

"It was surprising to me that they stated they're on a cost-cutting drive but then continued spending," one former staffer told BI.

Keep Wrapping

A Spotify spokesperson said the company would continue events such as Wrapped, Stockholm Intro Days, and the Best New Artist Grammy party.

The spokesperson said these were "key to promoting artists, engaging listeners, encouraging collaboration amongst employees, and highlighting our services," adding: "Spotify is a global company dedicated to celebrating creators, fostering a collaborative employee culture, and recognising team achievements."

The company declined to comment when BI asked how much it spent on parties and events.

Spotifest 2023

Spotifest, a music festival just for Spotify staff, stands out in employees' minds as an example of lavish spending.

The latest Spotifest took place in August. Hundreds of employees gathered at The Brooklyn Mirage in New York for the event. Laser lights beamed onto attendees' faces in the outdoor courtyard as the headliners Diplo and T-Pain performed on a huge stage. Elsewhere, acrobats performed, drag performers danced, and beer was served out of backpack kegs, according to people in attendance.

Related stories

The space was lit up by orange and blue spotlights, with one wall lined by a bar serving drinks, a YouTube video from the event shows. Attractions included a barbershop, photo booths, music-listening stations, a series of games, and a temporary-tattoo studio that branded employees with Spotify's logo.

Concerns shrugged off

Two months before Spotifest, the company cut 200 jobs . And earlier in the year, during the first round of cuts, Ek told employees in a memo that the company needed to "control costs" and that it had made a "considerable effort to rein-in costs."

While one worker said Spotifest was a good way to boost employee morale, another said the event was poorly timed once layoffs began.

A former employee who dealt with budgets said they attempted to raise the issue of the company needing to be better with spending, but their concerns were shrugged off.

Spotify's events largely fall into two categories. There are parties and events that are open to the public, which essentially function as brand marketing. Then there are employee-only events.

"Whether it's a team party, Grammys party, Christmas party, branded parties, or extra parties that are relatively under the wraps, there's certainly a ton of money being thrown at parties," one former employee told BI.

The company is headquartered in Stockholm, and it sends many new hires there for "Intro Days," during which they network, hear from speakers, and get up to speed on Spotify culture.

One former employee described it as the company "spending tons of money flying people to Sweden to drink the Kool-Aid." Several people who went on the trips told BI the company would put employees up in a hotel for three to five days and cover all their meals.

"You literally just sit in a room and listen to executives talk back-to-back for three days, and then there's a party at the end," one person said. "It's just such a stupid waste of money."

Another worker said, "I really questioned executive leadership's decision-making and where they spend money, and I think Intro Days are a good example."

This person said it showed poor leadership for Spotify to continue spending on parties and trips despite economic headwinds.

Beyond music streaming

Some of this lavish event spending is focused on solving a problem that has loomed over Spotify for years.

The tough economics of the music-streaming business mean Spotify pays out about 70% of its revenue to music rights holders , according to a company blog from early 2023. As more music is streamed on the service, these payouts generally increase at a similar rate. So as the company grows, expenses climb, too. This has been a concern for investors who prefer software business models that typically make a lot more money as sales rise.

One way for Spotify to tackle this challenge is to expand beyond music streaming and embrace other businesses with more scalable economics, such as podcasts, audiobooks, and concert tickets.

It has spent more than $1 billion on podcasts and went on an acquisition spree in 2019 through buying three podcast studios totaling $375 million. Spotify says it takes a 50% commission on revenue from ads on podcasts.

Spotify also started offering audiobooks to premium subscribers in October 2023, and the catalog has since grown to more than 250,000. Before it was rolled out, the Spotify executive Gustav Söderström said the company expected this new business to "have healthy margins, above 40%."

To mark the launch, Spotify executives, including Ek, flew to the company's New York office, where Alicia Keys put on a private performance for an intimate audience, two people with knowledge of the event said. Attendees got a photobook, and the company gave out Spotify-branded merchandise.

A "new modus operandi"

With giant rivals such as Apple and YouTube lurking, Spotify needs these new businesses to work out while also trying to keep investors happy by tightening its belt.

"We're consistently thinking about efficiency," Ek told analysts during a February earnings call.

"We started doing it in early 2023, and I think we are gradually becoming better quarter by quarter, and I think investors should expect much the same for 2024," he added. "We are going to continuously look at being more resourceful with the resources we have. That's just the new modus operandi that we have."

Your streaming is about to cost more: Spotify price hike is on the way says Bloomberg

educational audio books on spotify

Spotify is planning another subscription price hike, according to a Bloomberg News report that cites people familiar with the matter.

Bloomberg says the streaming service plans to raise prices by about $1 to $2 per month by the end of April in five markets, including the United Kingdom, Australia and Pakistan, with a U.S. price hike set to follow "later this year."

This would be the second U.S. price hike within the past year for Spotify, which raised the monthly rate for its individual Premium plan from $9.99 to $10.99 in July.

The company declined to comment on Bloomberg's report when contacted by USA TODAY.

Why is Spotify raising prices?

Bloomberg reports that the price hike will help cover the cost of audiobooks , a new Premium feature that launched late last year. Spotify offers up to 15 hours of audiobooks per month, with over 200,000 titles available.

How much is a Spotify monthly subscription?

A Spotify Premium subscription in the U.S. currently costs $10.99 per month for an individual listener, $14.99 per month for the "Duo" plan with two accounts, or $16.99 per month for a family plan with up to six accounts. Students have access for $5.99 per month.

Bloomberg reports that the company will be introducing a new basic tier that will offer music and podcasts, but no audiobooks, at the current $11 monthly rate per individual plan.

When was the last Spotify price hike?

Spotify last announced a $1 to $2 price hike in July of 2023. Existing subscribers were given a one-month grace period before the new rates went into effect.
