A book fair is the book lovers’ paradise. Now I know why it is called because this year I visited the Kolkata Book Fair with my uncle. There I saw lots of stalls. The stalls were nicely decorated. They stood in rows. Lots of books were properly shelved in every stall.

My uncle bought me some story books and a book on painting. I also made a long list of books to buy in future. The stalls were crowded with people of all ages. I was thrilled to see that anybody could touch or read any book. I just rushed from one stall to another because I never saw so many books before. When I was returning home I thought, ‘Had I all the books!’

I moved from stall to stall and bought some books. My father also bought some books of his interest. It was a thrilling experience for me. Such fairs should be held very often. A Visit to a Book Fair: 250-300 Words

It was the biennial International Book Fair at the Pragati Maidan, New Delhi. My friends and I decided to visit the fair since the opportunity comes only once in two years.

We reached the gate of the venue as early as 10 a.m. and bought our tickets. There was a long queue of book lovers before the counter and it amazed me that even in this age of e-books there are people who read books.

After the security check, we headed towards the centre of the action – the different halls. On our way, We could see banners of different sizes, with the big publishers occupying the largest stalls. Apart from the local publishers, national and international publishers too featured in the fair.

We visited some of the stalls and were impressed by the huge collection of books which included story books, novels, books on anatomy, medicine and others.

Later on, we visited the other halls and made sure that we dropped in at the stalls of the international participants. There were food stalls too, to offer refreshments, and we relieved our fatigue by sipping hot coffee.

As hours passed by, the number of visitors also increased and it became difficult for us to move about freely within the stalls which were full of book lovers.

It was 8 p.m. when we started our journey back home. We were almost drenched in sweat though it was a January evening. We were happy to carry the heavy bundles of books that we had bought and wished that such book fairs would be held more frequently so that people would be inspired to read more.

Books That Travel: A Report From the 2023 Nairobi International Book Fair

In 1993, I was a teenager, volunteering to work with street children in Kibera, the largest “slum” on the continent of Africa. I held babies, played hokey-pokey and Swahili versions of patty cake with grade-school kids, fielded requests for money by street children as we rode the matatus to downtown Nairobi, and gained weight chowing down on chapati, ugali, sukumawiki, and Cadbury’s chocolate, all while drinking copious amounts of sweet milky Kenyan tea.

The earliest Somali refugees were trickling into Kenya. We were one year shy of the genocide in Rwanda. One year shy of democracy in South Africa. That summer, another young American—Amy Biehl—was brutally murdered while working to register black voters for the first democratic elections in South Africa. And as for me? I knew almost nothing about East Africa, much less the continent of Africa, and I hadn’t read a single African writer.

My time in Kenya led me, of course, to read Chinua Achebe, Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o, Mariama Bâ, Buchi Emecheta, and Izak Dinesen. Each book I read left me shell-shocked, gutted. I wanted hope and idealism. I got reality instead.

As a young woman who grew up on the U.S.-Mexico border during the crisis of the peso devaluation and the war in El Salvador, standard American fiction afforded almost nothing that commented on my lived experience. African literature somehow felt closer to home. Achebe’s work spoke to me about lives contained and fixed and fought within violent cultural clashes not of the individual’s making; wa Thiong’o’s about political intrigues and corruption that individuals were powerless to protest or resist yet did so anyway, sometimes futilely but not without purpose or hope; Bâ, Emecheta, and Dinesen’s about how women could do everything we were taught to do, how we could achieve everything we had learned were the highest ideals for us to achieve in life, how we could strive and strive and strive and yet still find ourselves dismally unfulfilled.

African literature, depicting lives completely outside of my experience or cultural knowledge, commented upon and helped me interpret my own life. And I saw myself in these books. The main character in Things Fall Apart , Okonkwo, is nothing like me, but within him, I recognized my own tendency to cling to American cultural norms and values, even when they’re systematically destroying everything I hold dear. And I likewise recognized myself in his son, Nwoye, who was so broken by his father’s fastidious adherence to harmful Igbo traditions that he embraced a completely alien ideological framework in order to make sense of his experiences.

I think it’s crucial for we Americans and Europeans to read books written by non-Americans and non-Europeans, people outside of the Western cultural and political milieu. We need that perspective. We need to see those worlds. We need to reflect on our lives after basking in the experiences of people who are not subject to the same types of government, the same school systems, the same work systems, the same cultural values and systems, the same politics, the same sets of ideas.

This can help us avoid an incestuous, claustrophobic recycling of the same ideas, values, and experiences. It can help us see the common threads of human experience that link us all. Books are how we’re invited into homes we would never be invited into, at least, not without moving to and living in another country. Books are how we become friends with people we otherwise would never meet.

That summer I turned nineteen created everything that followed, charted a course for my life, even if I didn’t know it at the time. I went on to graduate school in African history and eventually opened my own publishing company, Catalyst Press, to publish African writers.

In September 2023, I came to Kenya as a publishing professional, a guest to the Nairobi International Book Festival, and my job was simple: meet with African publishers and Kenyan authors, create deals, publish books into the markets where my publishing company excels. There were twelve of us invited for that purpose, to create a framework for an ongoing rights fair on the continent, so that rights can be sold both across the continent and globally. To participate in European or North American rights fairs is difficult for most African publishers, both because of financial concerns but also the sheer barrier of obtaining visas to attend. The need for a rights fair on the continent seems obvious.

Ugandan publisher and writer Goretti Kyomuhendo lives fifteen minutes from the Rwandan border, but she told me she buys Rwandan writers in Europe. She’s reading a writer from Botswana now. Where’d she buy the book? London.

There are no easy answers for distribution and access to books in a continent that struggles with trade barriers, language differences, border controls—not to mention war and poverty.

Technically, books I publish are available for distribution in Kenya. Yet a local Nairobi bookseller informed me that my distributor only offers them a 35% discount on books—when booksellers in the U.S. get between 45-55% discounts. This means booksellers have a harder time making a profit—or have to markup retail prices, making books more expensive in Africa, where people already have less money.

This last problem in particular bothered me. I can’t fix trade barriers, or solve the problems of war—but couldn’t my distributor offer African booksellers an equal discount to the ones they offer American and European booksellers? Why the discrepancy?

In general, rights deals are probably the quickest and most affordable way for books written by Africans to travel both outside the continent and within. Making deals and selling or buying rights seems simple on the surface but it is complex in real life. As publishers, editors, agents, we all weigh the desire to publish books with economic factors. Can this book make enough money to break even? Can this book make enough money to help fund future books by this author or by other writers? How will the public receive this book? How will critics? Can it win awards? We are balancing all of these unknowns, and gambling on every book we publish. The best publishers are hesitant gamblers.

And then there’s an invisible factor as we break ground in a new market that can instantly run a potential deal into the ground: trust. How do publishers and writers in Kenya perceive us? Stefanie Hirsbrunner, owner of the InterKontinental bookstore in Berlin, said she noticed a general distrust towards publishers and editors from Kenyan writers. (To be honest, I think this is an attitude gaining ground in the U.S. too.) Trust is a foundational requirement in publishing. Yes, we create legal contracts, but without an initial assumption of trust, we’ll never make it that far.

This year’s fair is just the start, we hope. Raphael Thierry, a literary agent in France, told me that the publishing world can start to look away from Frankfurt, London, and Bologna alone and towards Sharjah, Lagos, Nairobi and other places as the place where rights deals get done.

This isn’t just about Africa, after all. It’s about all the books being produced outside of North America and Europe.

I stayed a week longer than other eleven participants in the rights fair. One by one, they left for the airport over the course of two days. We said goodbye, knowing we will see each other again in the future, in Frankfurt or Sharjah or Istanbul.

I arranged meetings with other writers, and with scientists and naturalists doing interesting work that might lead to books down the road. My wonderful taxi driver—a personal friend of my uncle’s for a couple of decades—took me to Mashimoni, the section of Kibera where I worked so many years ago. I had been told that I would weep to see Kibera’s deterioration, “how much worse it has become,” but to be honest, it looked the same—only much bigger. The streets still ran with muddy water burbling blue detergent bubbles. The shacks were just as bad, and the streets just as crowded, and the combined smell of burning garbage and corn roasting over small jiko stoves on street corners just as unappealing. Seeing it all through the barriers of locked car doors and rolled-up windows, I was sort of amazed at the sheer audacity I had, the freedom I felt, barreling along those same streets on foot in long skirts and tennis shoes as a 19-year-old.

I’m not sure why it took thirty years for me to return to Kenya. Perhaps it was that I fell in love with southern Africa, professionally and personally, and it’s there I return to again and again. But as my early morning plane took off, the sun rose over a cityscape that had become familiar once again in the past two weeks, and I knew without a doubt that I’ll return.

This year the book fair will continue from 5th of February to 11th of this month. Every year the publishers’ and booksellers’ guild organizes the Kolkata book fair in allotted regions of Kolkata by the state government. Unlike all other years, this year the venue chosen for the book fair was the central park premises, Salt Lake.

According to the organising authority this year the total number of bookstalls can exceed up to even 4000. A passionate book lover can find his heaven among the all-around kingdom of books and magazines. Renowned authors like Sreejata Chatterjee, Tanima Gupta are supposed to be present in the book fair. Apart from bookstalls, a beautiful cultural function has also been arranged in the book fair.

An Amazing Book Fair in Holy Child Girls’ School

Holy Child Girls’ Higher Secondary School; 5th February: The Holy Child girls High School has again set an example in school education by organising a book fair exclusively for their students inside their school premises. According to the principal of this school, books help all students to flourish both inside and outside.

Moreover, a book fair organised by the school and in the school makes the students more attentive. The school garden was chosen as the venue for the book fair. Books are a great source of knowledge. They are our good friends . They provide mental health and entertainment. The knowledge gained by our ancestors, our culture, and our heritage remains with us in the form of books , Book fairs, and libraries help a lot in encouraging the hobby of reading . In our city book fairs are held from time to time. My father always takes me to these book fairs.

Book lovers, readers, booksellers, publishers, and buyers gather in large numbers at the book fairs. Books regarding all subjects are displayed. One can browse the bookstalls and buy books of one’s choice. Seminars, discussions, and interviews of authors are arranged. This helps in the exchange of views.

I happened to visit a big book fair held in our city recently. Publishers and booksellers from all over the country had come to the fair. There were books on various subjects history , geography, science, technology, literature, travel, etc. There were books in all major Indian languages. But Marathi and English books were the major attractions. The booksellers were offering attractive gifts on the purchase of books. My father browsed through many well-known old and new novels. I searched for fiction books. I bought a dictionary and Harry Potter books. My father bought one autobiography and a couple of other books. We bought Panchatantra for my younger sister. The publisher gave us a 20% discount on our purchase.

It was evening now and the fair was overcrowded. Many schoolchildren and elder people visited the fair. My father and I spent almost two to three hours at the fair. We then returned home with much satisfaction.

Last year I went to visit the book fair. This is the biggest book fair in Bangladesh. It is officially called ‘Ekushey Boi Mela’. This month-long fair is held on the premises of Bangla Academy from 1st February every year to commemorate the language movement of 1952. Across the wide courtyard of the fair were a large number of decorated and interesting bookstalls. The stalls were filled with a variety of books by famous authors. All the publishers of the country participated in the fair with thousands of their published books. I took my younger sister with me. We toured many stalls and bought some books by our favorite authors. There we met story writer Hasan Azizul Haque and novelist Humayun Ahmed and took their autographs. I think the book fair is our biggest national conference. A Bookfair helps people to develop the habit of reading books.

In a book fair, all sorts of books are gathered and displayed in an attractive way. So, the visitors come to know about the published books and can buy books according to their taste.

My Visit to a Book Fair: Ekushey Boi Mela is by far the biggest book fair in Bangladesh. It is held on the occasion of the 21 st of February, the International Mother Language Day, and lasts throughout the month of February. It is held in the Bangla Academy Arcade. This year I visited the Ekushey Boi Mela on the 21 st of February. The area was highly decorated and well-lighted on the occasion of the book fair. The book stalls were arranged in rows in a planned way. In one corner, a big stage was erected. Everyday discussions and cultural programs were held on the stage throughout the duration of the fair. In front of the stage, there were hundreds of chairs for the audience to sit. It was about 4 PM. When I entered the fair, there were hundreds of stalls displaying and selling books published by the local publishers. There were also some book stalls in one corner which sold foreign books. I was amazed to see the wide variety of books displayed in the book stalls. In some stalls, I found some leading writers and novelists of the country such as Humayun Ahmed, Muhammad Zafar Iqbal, Imdadul Haque Milan, Shamsur Rahman, Al Mahmud, Syed Shamsul Hoque, Sirajul Islam Chowdhury, and Rafique Azad. They were giving autographs if someone purchased their books. There were many books having colorful pictures and drawings for the young readers. I like science fiction very much. So, I bought some science fiction and books of scientific interest for myself. I also purchased some books on English literature. Moreover, I bought some children’s books for my young nephews and nieces. Then I went to the area where the stage was erected. At that moment a drama on our language movement was being staged there. I enjoyed the drama. I spent about five hours at the book fair.

Importance of a Book Fair: A book fair is important for any country. At a book fair, people come to know about all kinds of books. As the books are displayed nicely, people feel interested to buy books. The newly published books and books of current interest attract the people very much. Everyone can find and buy books on one’s particular interest. So, a huge number of books are sold at a book fair. In this way, a book fair contributes to the circulation of published books and the spread of knowledge. The publishers also feel interested to publish new books on the occasion of a book fair. Hence, a book fair helps the publishing industry too.

Conclusion: Considering the importance and significance of book fairs, it is necessary to hold more book fairs regularly.

Composition on a Book Fair I Visited, 300 Words

A book fair takes place especially for displaying books on various subjects. It has recently become very popular in our country. Nowadays it is held in every city and town on some occasions, especially on the occasion of 21st February. The largest book fair is held in our country every year on the premises of Bangla Academy on 21st February. It goes on for about a month.

I would not have believed that a book fair could be so fascinating, had I not visited the book fair held at the Bangla Academy Premises last year. It was around 3 o’clock when I reached there. There were about 300 pavilions of different publishers and book-sellers. People both young and old particularly those who are book lovers came to visit the fair and to buy books. All sorts of books such as books on literature, fiction, novels, dramas, science, medicine, engineering, politics, history, general knowledge, philosophy, religion, and so on were brought for display and sale at the fair.

After 4 PM the visitors rushed in and the whole area became overcrowded. Lines in front of certain stalls were so extended that it became out of reach to get the required books.

Selling at the counters was usually brisk. Customers were happy to get the twenty-percent discount. Some publishers brought out famous and rare books on this occasion.

Besides bookstalls, there were a number of canteens. I took refreshment in one of them. The whole atmosphere was joyous. Indeed, it was altogether a different type of fair and I enjoyed every moment of my stay there.

The book fair reminds us that books are our best friends. It creates in us a curiosity of knowledge and an interest in reading. Although a book fair in our country is of recent origin, it is gradually gaining popularity among the people. It promotes the publication of books to spread education and knowledge and helps to develop an enlightened nation.

One has to write as one finds it – and in terms of the welcome shown, and the conversations with Saudi men and women, and more importantly, the atmosphere, this has been very much at odds with the familiar line in the West on this part of the world.”

Malda, 07th January 2022: I visited the district book fair held for a week from 7th January to 14th January 2022 in Malda D.S.A Maidan. This book fair was the 33rd book fair. This was arranged under the presidency of District Library Officer Malda. The ground was decorated with banners and festoons. The fair was inaugurated by the chairman of the English Bazar Municipality. He delivered an important lecture at the fair. Inside the fairground, there were rows of booksellers, publishers, food stalls and so on. There were different kinds of books such as novels, classics, children’s books, religious books etc. Each book stall had a won number. Scholars, lecturers, teachers, authors, poets, and students were present there. They moved from one book stall to another and purchased books as per their need.

In the middle of the ground, there was a stadium where cultural programmes, debates and discussions were held every day. I purchased three books such as Agniyoug, chotoder Vivekananda, a dictionary, Feluda and spoken English. I left for home at 5:00 p.m eating popcorn with my companions and storing some good memories in the layer of my mind.

Kolkata, 30th January 2022: I visited the international book fair held on 31st January 2022 at Salt Lake in Kolkata. Our honourable Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee inaugurated the book fair . She gave a valuable speech at the fair. This book fair was the 46th book fair. Spain was the theme country at the fair. There were nine entry and exit points for easy movement of visitors. Among the gates, there were Biswa Bangla Gate and Najrul’s Agnibina Gate. There were around 700 stalls and 200 Little Magazine stalls at the fair. The slogan for the 13-day event was Boi Porun, Boi Kinun, Boi Upohaar Din (Read Books, Buy Books, Gift Books).

There were different kinds of books such as novels, classics, children’s books, religious books etc. Scholars, lecturers, teachers, authors, poets, and students were present there. I purchased Agniyoug, chotoder Vivekananda, and spoken English. I left for home at 5:00 p.m. storing some good memories in the layer of my mind.

FamilySearch attracts more than 50,000 visitors at Argentina Book Fair

Volunteers help people learn about their family history at the FamilySearch booth at the Buenos Aires International Book Fair in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

For the second year in a row, FamilySearch participated in the Buenos Aires Argentina International Book Fair, one of the most important literary events in the Spanish-speaking world.

At the event, FamilySearch representatives helped more than 50,000 visitors with an interest in family history and genealogy.

At the 48th edition of the Buenos Aires International Book Fair, held between April 25 and May 13, FamilySearch offered attendees the opportunity to discover and explore their family trees, access historical records and receive personalized attention from 370 volunteers serving at the FamilySearch booth in the fair’s main pavilion.

Carlos Cantero, FamilySearch manager for the South America South Area, said the impact of the event is “impressive.” He said many of the visitors left the FamilySearch booth with “tears of joy, having found connections to their family through new data and historical photographs.” He also expressed gratitude for the volunteers, who “donated so many hours of their time as well as talents to serve others.”

As part of the FamilySearch experience, visitors could journey back in time by dressing in period clothing to take a photo on a replica boat, reliving the experience of ancestors arriving in the country by boat.

“At this fair, we are presenting the collection of entry records for passengers arriving to Argentina, and which was digitalized in full, having closed an agreement with the National General Archive,” said Pablo Schpilman, FamilySearch’s engagement manager for the South America South Area.

FamilySearch also held a series of workshops and conferences with local and international experts, covering various topics and offering practical advice on how to utilize FamilySearch’s digital tools and preserve family history for future generations. Classes on the importance of getting to know personal roots and how to obtain Italian and Spanish citizenship were also provided.

The first ever South Asia International Book Fair 2023 kicked off today at Exhibition Hall, Bhrikutimandap, Kathmandu. It has been five years since Nepal has hosted any international book fair. The book fair will be conducted till November 25, 2023 for five days.

The fair carries a slogan “Explore the Charm of Asian Culture and Literature”.

The fair has been organized by Federation of Nepal Books and Stationary Business together in cooperation with Current Media and Research Center Pvt. Ltd. The fair has been supported by China International Book Trading Corporation and Current Publication Pvt. Ltd.

How I Became a Target of the Russian Disinformation Machine—And the GOP

The following is an excerpt from best-selling author Steven Brill’s The Death of Truth , to be published on June 4, in which Brill draws in part on his experience as the cofounder of NewsGuard to explain the forces that have created a chaotic, polarized world in which the truth—the shared belief in basic facts—that allows democracies and civil society to function has been so severely eroded. NewsGuard rates the reliability of websites and associated online media and has covered everything from healthcare hoaxes to Russian disinformation campaigns.

In early 2023, NewsGuard reported on a documentary produced by the FSB Russian security service and carried on its YouTube-affiliated channels in the lead-up to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The completely fake documentary depicted a lab run by the United States in Ukraine that was producing bioweapons to be targeted at Russia.

The fake Russian FSB bioweapons claim had not received much attention initially when it was posted in December 2021 on the YouTube account of someone named John Dougan . However, the “report” about the supposed weapons lab, pre-positioned online three months before the Russian invasion, was then cited by Russian officials in explaining to their countrymen and the world the urgent need for the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. When NewsGuard reported a year later that YouTube had never taken down videos pushing Russian propaganda, despite its promises when the war started to do so, YouTube finally removed those that NewsGuard had listed, including the bioweapons lab video. Dougan and the Russian FSB security service were apparently not pleased. They launched a series of threats against me directed at my home in New York.

On Friday, March 10, 2023, a thirty-one-minute video was posted on YouTube with the headline “US Govt Using 3rd Parties to Censor Free Speech and Spread Disinformation!” Reading from a teleprompter and sitting in front of a backdrop showing photos of what appeared to be scenes of war-caused carnage, the narrator, Dougan, began by accusing the U.S. government of spreading massive amounts of disinformation. Speaking calmly, with a plain American accent, and clearly at ease using the teleprompter, he then explained that a new enemy was assisting the American government in its disinformation campaigns.

“With the advent of social media,” he said, “it’s becoming harder for the US government to pull the wool over the eyes of the American people, and so they need a mechanism to quash dissenting opinions and the presentation of facts. . . . They are pressuring social media companies to engage in egregious acts of censorship.”

One of the government’s weapons for applying that pressure, Dougan declared, was NewsGuard—“a company that is . . . engaged in a smear campaign against me and fellow YouTuber Mike Jones , pressuring YouTube to have our content removed.”

That content, he explained, included “revelations” in a recent video report that he and Jones had done featuring what he said was an undercover “walk-through” of a bioweapons lab in Ukraine financed by American pharmaceutical companies. “Yes, we were there,” he said. He also talked about “my October 4 revelations” that he had filmed of “American navy divers seen under very suspicious circumstances” in the North Sea just before the Nord Stream gas pipeline was blown up. And he reminded viewers of a third report he had done in December 2020 purporting to document the U.S.-run bioweapons labs in Ukraine. That video, he said, showed his journalism skills because he was “ahead of the curve” in reporting what the Russians only revealed four months later when, citing Dougan’s earlier YouTube documentary, the Kremlin used the weapons lab as a key rationale for invading Ukraine.

In other words, Dougan’s trailblazing, independent journalism—achieved, he said, because “we are in a position to travel to places where other Western journalists refused to go and where they refuse to report on”—had informed Russia and the world about the bioweapons threat in Ukraine.

Contrary to Dougan’s claim, NewsGuard was not acting on behalf of the U.S. government, nor had it pressured YouTube to do anything. But NewsGuard had issued that report nineteen days before Dougan taped this YouTube video. It was headlined, “Full-length Russian propaganda films justifying the war proliferate on YouTube, despite the platform’s ban on Russian state-funded media.” The report revealed that since the Russian invasion of Ukraine had begun a year earlier, the Russian propaganda outlet RT had produced fifty films spreading disinformation on “more than 100” YouTube channels about Ukraine and the war. The films included false reports that Ukraine committed genocide against Russian speakers in Ukraine’s Donbas region, that Western sanctions against Russia following the invasion have had little effect on Russia’s economy while devastating the economies of Western countries, and that “Nazism” is rampant in Ukraine. These were elaborately produced videos, billed as documentaries.

More important, the NewsGuard report explained how these pseudo documentaries had managed to evade YouTube’s ostensible ban on RT propaganda: RT had paid for them to be produced but was allowing them to be rebranded and posted on YouTube channels—including many whose accounts were listed as belonging to an American, John Dougan. NewsGuard proved that by finding that the Dougan videos were identical to videos that had first been posted on RT before YouTube banned the RT versions.

Within days of NewsGuard issuing its report, most of Dougan’s RT-financed videos were taken down, including the December 2020 “documentary” about bioweapons labs in Ukraine. It was about two weeks after that that Dougan posted his video about NewsGuard.

“NewsGuard is owned by a man by the name of Steven Shill, excuse me, Steven Brill,” Dougan’s YouTube video continued. “Brill is a far left-leaning Democrat that owns a sprawling . . . estate right down the road from the Clinton crime family in Westchester County, New York.” At that moment a camera shot showing an aerial view of my home appeared.

Dougan then produced what he said was proof that I was working for the government. He played portions of a tape-recorded phone call in which someone had called me, identified himself as an FBI agent, and asked for my cooperation in an investigation the bureau was conducting into Russian disinformation on YouTube. In the recording, I responded, “We’d be delighted to help.”

As I watched Dougan that Friday morning on YouTube play the recording, I now realized what a strange, unsettling phone call that I had received two weeks earlier had really been about. On Friday, February 24, someone had called my unlisted home phone just before 7:00 a.m. and identified himself, with a name that was garbled, as being “with the bureau.” When I asked, “What bureau?” he had hesitated, then answered, “The Washington bureau of the FBI. . . . We’re investigating reports of Russian videos on YouTube, and we would like to come see you.” I was immediately suspicious, both because of his hesitation initially to say he was with the FBI (impersonating an FBI agent is a crime) and because it seemed that agents wouldn’t call someone at home so early to make an appointment; if the matter was that urgent, they would just show up. So I told him to put the request in writing and email it to me at my office and, “if appropriate,” we would be delighted to help, whereupon I gave him my office email address. In his telling on YouTube, Dougan made much of the fact that I gave the supposed agent my “personal company email address.”

He said it was evidence of my eagerness to cooperate. In fact, my email is listed prominently on NewsGuard’s website. In much of the rest of the video he talked about my wife and one of my daughters. I had occasionally received death threats via the NewsGuard website contact email or on the office telephones, as had many of my colleagues, which had required us to add some extra security protocols at our office. This call—a man with a muffled voice calling on my unlisted home number saying he wanted to come see me—seemed much more serious. Within hours I was in contact with agents from an FBI counterterrorism unit, and they immediately opened a case.

That the caller had identified himself as an FBI agent especially interested them. At their request, we culled through emails and voicemail messages to me and the rest of the staff separating out the threats (“We know where your office is and you will all die soon”) from simple name-calling and sent the whole batch to the bureau. They began tracking down the senders of the death threats. At the same time, they put in motion a process to get my home phone records from the phone company so they could track down that call impersonating an agent.

Four days later, on February 28, my wife was shaken when she played back a voicemail recording of a message left for me on our home phone by what seemed to be the same person. This time, after again mentioning my daughter, he dropped the FBI pose and said he knew “everything about you guys,” accused me of “selling out your country,” and said that “when you die, and it won’t be long, you’re getting close to that age, people will realize exactly what you were.” We sent the FBI an audio file of the recording.

Ten days later, on the morning I saw the Dougan YouTube video with the aerial shot of my home, I sent it to the lead FBI agent on our case. She called immediately to say that she had been about to call that morning to tell me that they had traced back the two phone calls. They had been from the same person. The man at the other end of the phone both times had been John Dougan, who was in Moscow.

In further briefings, I learned that Dougan, a former marine, had been an officer in the Sheriff ’s Department in Palm Beach County, Florida, until 2016, when he fled to Russia and was granted asylum after being targeted in a computer hacking scheme. Since then, I was told, he had become well known to the FBI and, as they put it, “our sister security agencies” as a Russian operative who specialized in producing some of the Russians’ most elaborate disinformation campaigns and narrating them as if he were an independent American journalist. Relatedly, it appeared that the aerial video of my home in Dougan’s video was not a simple Google satellite shot. Instead, it had probably been taken by a drone that someone had hired. [Note: In a subsequent conversation with NewsGuard, Dougan denied he had hired a drone for this aerial shot.] I was also told that those same sister agencies reported that Dougan was still in Russia.

“So he poses no imminent threat to you,” the lead agent on the case said. But he knows where I live and the Russians must have people all over the United States, I said. And he must have followers here on his YouTube channel that could act on their own. The FBI agents agreed. This was more serious than a few random crank emails. In a meeting a few days later with three agents and my wife sitting at our dining room table, we agreed on a multifaceted security plan to be implemented by a private security company.

I now live in a home surrounded by twelve motion-detecting security cameras, monitored remotely by the security service, and filled with dead-bolt window and door locks and other reminders of Dougan’s video—which produced multiple new death threats, but never anything that the FBI, which has continued to stay on the case, has tracked to anyone or anything posing what they consider a substantive threat. One caller “has made dozens of calls like this,” one agent told me. “You’re on quite a list. He’s got mental health issues, and apparently has a few drinks every night and sits down and calls someone new. He doesn’t live anywhere near you,” he added, “and we talked to him. He is not much of a threat.”

Some of the rest of Dougan’s video is worth reviewing because, given that the FBI had identified him as a Russian agent, it illustrates the kinds of sweeping conspiracy theories the Kremlin specializes in promoting. After he noted that I lived “right down the road from the Clinton crime family” (the Clintons are about ten miles away), here’s how this American fugitive turned Russian disinformation operative connected the dots for his followers:

Brill went to Yale like a lot of other high-profile war hawks, liars, and disinformation perpetuators and general deep state assholes, like both of the Bushes, Hillary and Bill Clinton, John Kerry, Hunter Biden , [the Russian dissident] Alex Navalny, Janet Yellen , Dick Cheney, Steve Mnuchin , and John Bolton , not to mention his own wife went to Yale. Now, what most people don’t realize is that Yale happens to be a primary CIA recruiting ground for the deep state assholes, and like all dirty assholes they love to stick together.

At least it was comforting to know that state actors working for one of our primary adversaries were peddling conspiracies that were crazy beyond what anyone in our government would ever believe or try to push.

Or so I thought until a few hours later on the same day that we discovered Dougan’s YouTube rant. At about 2:30 p.m., as my wife and I were still digesting Dougan’s Russian-made YouTube video accusing me and my company of censoring speech at the behest of the U.S. government, our general counsel received an email from Jim Jordan , the chairman of the U.S. House of Representatives Judiciary Committee, declaring,

The Committee on the Judiciary is conducting oversight of how and the extent to which the Executive Branch has coerced and colluded with companies and other intermediaries to censor speech. Certain third parties, including organizations like yours, may have played a role in this censorship regime by advising on so-called “misinformation” and other types of content—sometimes with direct or indirect support or approval from the federal government. Whether directly or indirectly, a government-approved or -facilitated censorship regime is a grave threat to the First Amendment and American civil liberties.

The House Judiciary Committee, which I remembered as the somber panel that had made history with its bipartisan vote to begin impeachment proceedings against Richard Nixon, was accusing NewsGuard of the same thing that the Russian disinformation apparatus had just accused us of, and on the same day.

Chairman Jordan’s letter had come after his committee had held a hearing in which the star witnesses were two journalists turned advocates, Matt Taibbi and Michael Shellenberger . They had used electronic files of communications between government officials and Twitter staff given to them by Twitter’s new owner, Elon Musk , to make the case that a “censorship-industrial complex” of nonprofits, cybersecurity companies, and media reliability assessors like us were being paid by the government to help censor conservative content on social media platforms by pressuring the platforms to remove it. Although objective, third-party studies had found that, if anything, the social media platforms gave conservatives a disproportionate voice, Taibbi and Shellenberger were able to cherry-pick emails and other documents that Musk provided them to make the case that the government had colluded with the social media platforms to suppress conservatives.

None of this had anything to do with NewsGuard because (1) none of the major social media companies used NewsGuard; (2) we advocate not for blocking anything but, rather, for the platforms to give users information about the reliability of those publishing what the platforms are feeding their users; and (3) we had no contracts with the government to provide our ratings of websites. Nonetheless, Shellenberger and Taibbi named my company as part of their censorship-industrial complex, and after the hearing in which they appeared, one committee member, Matt Gaetz of Florida had said, “If we do not take a look at NewsGuard, we have failed.”

Chairman Jordan’s letter requested that we provide the committee with copies of every letter, email, memo, or text message that we had used to communicate internally or with government officials or any technology company or social media platform “referring or relating to the moderation, deletion, suppression, restriction, demonetization, or reduced circulation of content.”

In effect, the committee was asking for pretty much every document or message NewsGuard had created since its inception. Beyond the First Amendment issues related to a unit of the government examining our journalist-analysts’ communications in the course of their reporting, and beyond the potential compromise related to handing over all of our proprietary sales and marketing materials, as well as our proprietary Nutrition Labels, to a seemingly hostile source known for leaking, these requests represented a potentially crushing cost in legal fees and fees related to searching and gathering all of these materials. We also knew that not responding to the “request” could result in a subpoena forcing our compliance.

The first cost was hiring a lawyer from among those who had carved out a specialty representing clients in congressional investigations. We found a partner at a law firm that we used in defending (always successfully) the limited threats of libel suits that we had faced. He was a Republican and a former member of the George W. Bush administration who knew members of the committee and, more important, its key Republican staff members.

We were determined to convince the committee that they had picked the wrong target. We submitted a long memo detailing our nonpartisan process and ratings, explaining that our work for the government only involved helping the Defense Department’s Cyber Command monitor disinformation campaigns by foreign adversaries.

We never received a subpoena for the massive trove of other material. Yet even this limited encounter resulted in our relatively small company having to bear significant, unbudgeted legal fees, just as the Dougan threat had necessitated large and ongoing security costs.

When I had mentioned to the lead FBI agent working our case that we had gotten that letter from the Judiciary Committee, she asked that I give her a heads-up if we were going to have to testify, “because that will raise the threat level, and we’ll have to coordinate with the Capitol Police.”

Through the spring of 2023 vile emails continued coming in to NewsGuard accusing us of communism, globalism, pedophilia, and other offenses, plus some new physical threats. They seemed to escalate when something particularly bothered the unhinged crowd. We noticed a spike, for example, when Tucker Carlson was fired by Fox News’s chairman, Rupert Murdoch. That night, one angry emailer grouped us with “BLM, ANTIFA, HOMO SOROS AND LIBTARD RUPERT MURDOCH” and promised, “WE THE PEOPLE . . . AREN’T GOING TO SIMPLY SHUT YOU DOWN, WE ARE GOING TO BURN YOU DOWN AND REMOVE EACH EMPLOYED ENTITY FROM BREATHING VIABILITY.”

Sometimes, the threats aimed at us that spring were bizarre. Ten days before we received the March 10 letter from Chairman Jordan, we got one from Jimmy Patronis , who identified himself as the “Chief Financial Officer” of Florida. “As you may know, I sit on the Florida Cabinet along with Governor Ron DeSantis ,” he began. “Over a year ago, the State of Florida began untethering itself from Environmental, Social, and Governance standards—otherwise known as ESG metrics.” Echoing DeSantis’s anti-ESG crusade, which was a center-piece of the Florida governor’s war with private businesses over their allegedly “woke” policies, Patronis then declared NewsGuard to be part of the ESG movement and, as with DeSantis’s much-heralded war with the Walt Disney Company, threatened a private company exercising its First Amendment rights:

NewsGuard is promoting a ratings system for quality of information, as though you are some kind of arbiter of truth. This activity is similar to other organizations who ranked and categorized businesses as part of corrupt ESG practices….As we’ve studied ESG, we have come to learn the tricks of the trade—and your recent engagement falls right in line with similar efforts to de-fund Conservative organizations who are competing in the realm of ideas….In short, your enterprise may….be subject to legislative scrutiny in the upcoming legislative session.

We replied politely that we had nothing to do with the ESG movement. Patronis’s letter was ridiculous to the point of being comical. Yet it should also be understood for the authoritarian message it sent, from a man who was, as he noted, in the cabinet of a then-leading presidential candidate. Patronis was threatening a private company, NewsGuard, for giving other private companies—advertisers—information that they might use to decide how they spent their advertising dollars in the private marketplace. He was wrong that NewsGuard was targeting conservative websites for advertising boycotts. However, that is not nearly as troubling as his effort to assert power over the services and speech of private parties whom he perceived as being on the other side in an us-against-them war.

About a year earlier, I had received what should have been an early warning that picking sides was now what mattered most in tribal America, not right or wrong. NewsGuard had just negotiated an agreement with the American Federation of Teachers, led by Randi Weingarten , to allow all of her member-teachers and their students access to NewsGuard’s browser extension so that they could improve their news literacy skills by seeing how we applied our nine journalistic criteria to score the trustworthiness of news sites. Within days, we received a letter from Jim Banks , then the ranking Republican on the House Oversight Committee, accusing us of “clear liberal bias” and noting that this alliance with the AFT is “equally troubling” because the union “has demonstrated a bias for the radical left’s ideology.” He then asked us to reply to a series of questions about how we conducted our work—the answers to which were readily available on our website.

Given what had been my contentious history with Weingarten and the AFT, I had naively thought that our agreement would be seen as a coup demonstrating that in times of crisis even adversaries could come together. My reply to Banks said, in part,

I’ve published numerous…books and articles, including… The Rubber Room (in The New Yorker) and Class Warfare (Simon & Schuster). Reporting on The Rubber Roo m and Class Warfare is how I met Randi Weingarten… The New Yorker article and the book . . . was a no-holds-barred look at the numerous problems I perceived were associated with teachers’ union contracts. Ms. Weingarten and I disagreed vehemently. We appeared at numerous forums debating each other, often fiercely. But we were civil. We respected each other. We even grew to like each other while not changing an iota of our positions. That is what a democracy is supposed to be about.

So, how did our agreement with the AFT come about? Randi and I agreed that at a time when democracy is being undermined by online misinformation affecting everything from our confidence in healthcare science, to elections, to knowing whether Ukraine is ruled by Nazis, news literacy and an informed democracy that gives people, especially children, the basic tools to discern fact from dangerous fiction is more important than our differences about education policy. She looked past the fact that we gave high ratings to education news sites that are often critical of her union. We resolved that once we can get more people believing in the same set of inalienable facts, we can go back to the work and to the joy of democracy: debating policy.

Banks never replied, and his staff sat stone-faced when we did a Zoom meeting. The one exchange I remember was when one legislative aide remarked that we had given a low rating to an antiabortion site, which must mean that we were biased. I answered that as our Nutrition Label explained, the site got a low score not because it was antiabortion—many other sites that took the same position got high ratings—but because it repeatedly wrote that abortions caused breast cancer, which was misinformation that had been debunked by medical experts. “Yes, but you did give them a negative rating and they are pro-life,” was his reply. The political position was what mattered, not the false fact used to back that position.
