What Are Your Thoughts on Riding the School Bus?

essay on my school bus

By Shannon Doyne

  • Dec. 19, 2016

Do you ride a school bus? If not now, did you ever ride the bus to and from school? What is behavior like on your bus? What, if anything, would you change about the experience of riding the bus?

In the Opinion essay “ ‘I Wish I Had a Pair of Scissors, So I Could Cut Out Your Tongue ,’” which gets its title from a threat made by an older boy to a five-year-old while they were riding on a school bus together in New York City, Alina Simone writes:

At a time of hypervigilant parenting and wearable GPS trackers for kids, the school bus remains one of the black boxes of childhood. In what other situation would parents allow dozens of kids, ranging from 4 to 13, to look after themselves, with the only adult in earshot focused on navigating a six-wheeler through rush hour traffic? ... According to Lois Herrera, the chief executive of the city’s Office of Safety and Youth Development, bullying on the bus is not a major concern: Only 40 cases were reported last year, and 16 so far this year. Really? For the 150,000 students riding public school buses every day? These numbers differ starkly from what national data tells us. A 2011 survey conducted by the National Education Association showed that half of school bus drivers regularly witness bullying. Another study, based on a review of surveillance-camera footage taken during 30 school bus rides, found an average of two bullying incidents per commute. New York State’s education department has been called out for underreporting bullying before. Earlier this year, Attorney General Eric Schneiderman pointed out that, despite requirements to track bullying, more than half of New York City schools reported zero cases. Besides enforcing real reporting, how can we prevent bullying on buses? Joshua Hendrix, a criminologist at RTI International, is researching what kinds of interventions schools think work best. “Bus attendants basically rank No. 1,” he says, followed by “the use of security cameras, having the option for drivers to pull over, and different types of bonding strategies in which drivers and students are encouraged to get to know one another.”

Students: Read the entire essay, then tell us:

— To what degree, if at all, are your own experiences with school buses reflected in the essay? Explain.

— What is the general attitude toward the bus at your school?

— How do you pass the time on the school bus? Or, if you get to and from school some other way, do you think your current mode of transportation is better or worse than riding a bus?

— Are there specific rules on your bus? If so, do people follow them? What happens if a student breaks a school bus rule?

— Do you think bullying is more likely or less likely to occur on a school bus than on school grounds? Why?

— The essay mentions a number of suggestions that have been made to address bullying on school buses. What do you think of these suggestions? Do they work—or could they, if they were put in place?

250 Words Essay on Bus

Introduction.

The bus, a ubiquitous symbol of public transportation, has been instrumental in shaping societies through its role in promoting mobility, accessibility, and social interaction. It has facilitated the growth of cities, economies, and cultures, making it a critical component of urban development.

The Historical Perspective

Buses have a rich history, dating back to the horse-drawn omnibuses of the 1820s. The advent of motorized buses in the early 20th century transformed public transportation, making it faster and more efficient. The evolution of buses reflects the technological advancements of societies, showcasing our ability to create solutions for mass transit.

The Social Impact

Buses also serve as social spaces, promoting interaction among diverse groups of people. They break down social barriers and foster a sense of community. Furthermore, buses provide an affordable mode of transport, ensuring that transportation is not a privilege but a right accessible to all.

Environmental Implications

In the context of environmental sustainability, buses are a greener alternative to private vehicles. By reducing the number of cars on the road, buses can significantly decrease carbon emissions and mitigate traffic congestion. The push for electric buses further underscores the potential of buses in achieving environmental goals.

In conclusion, the bus is more than just a means of transportation. It is a social equalizer, an environmental solution, and a testament to human innovation. As we move towards a more sustainable and inclusive future, the role of buses in our societies will continue to be of paramount importance.

500 Words Essay on Bus

The bus, a humble yet significant mode of transportation, has been instrumental in shaping the socio-economic fabric of societies worldwide. Its role has been pivotal in connecting remote areas, fostering economic development, and promoting social integration.

The Historical Evolution of Buses

The history of buses can be traced back to the 19th century, where horse-drawn omnibuses became a common sight in European cities. The advent of the internal combustion engine in the early 20th century revolutionized bus design, leading to the motorized buses we are familiar with today. These transformations were not merely technological, but also socio-cultural, as buses gradually became symbols of public mobility and accessibility.

The Socio-Economic Impact of Buses

Buses have had a profound socio-economic impact. They facilitated the growth of suburbs, allowing people to live away from crowded city centers while maintaining access to job opportunities. Buses also play a crucial role in developing countries, where they provide an affordable means of transportation for the majority of the population. Moreover, they have been instrumental in promoting gender equality by providing women with a safe and reliable means of transportation.

Buses and Environmental Sustainability

In the face of growing environmental concerns, buses are emerging as a sustainable transportation solution. Modern buses, especially those powered by electricity or hybrid technology, emit significantly less carbon dioxide per passenger compared to cars. They also help reduce traffic congestion and the associated environmental and economic costs. Therefore, promoting bus usage can be an effective strategy in the global fight against climate change.

The Future of Buses

The future of buses is exciting, with innovations like autonomous buses and high-capacity rapid transit systems on the horizon. These developments promise to make bus travel more efficient, comfortable, and environmentally friendly. However, realizing this future requires overcoming challenges such as infrastructure development, regulatory hurdles, and public acceptance of new technologies.

In conclusion, buses have played a significant role in shaping our societies and economies, and they hold the potential to address some of our most pressing challenges, such as climate change and urban congestion. As we move forward, it is essential to recognize and leverage the transformative potential of buses, while addressing the challenges that come with it.

Persuasive Essay On School Buss

Safety is our business, without a doubt, any company or organization offering transportation to the public should regard this as their motto. There are many American cities within this Country where the general public which includes students have different options which relate to the use of public transportation. They may choose the train, privately owned buses or they may select school buses provided by the government. Most students try to take the buses by the government while others use other forms of transportation. Since the school buses offer a safer option a cost-effective and usually punctual, there is entirely no doubt that the American cities should make it mandatory for all students to use the school buses provided by the government. Firstly, school buses uniquely considered a safer option for school children, since many trains and public bus operators at times exercise reckless driving. For example, some public transportation drivers are often seen swerving recklessly and sometimes overtaken five vehicles on the road. There is no doubt that these operators drive at a speed which categorically exceeds the speed limit. From one's observation, they show little concern that they are also endangering the lives of those in their care. Such practices should not be overlooked and encouraged. Hence, I strongly advocate that student should utilize the government school buses. Researchers asked three fundamental questions of the urban areas, one of which was if all students have access to a high-quality education. The researchers surveyed 3,200 parents in eight of the cities and discovered that over 30 percent of low-income families making under $35,000 a year said they have more difficulty finding transportation options during the school choice and charter application process. The report suggested that education leaders could enter agreements with other city agencies on improving public transportation options to improve school siting. (Gray, 2017) In addition, there is entirely no cost when a student uses the school buses. Economically, this is an excellent asset to most parents knowing that over 4 million cars are on the road daily. Why then should parents pay? For example, if students have to pay $3.00

School Buses Should Have Seatbelts

“School bus transportation is one of the safest forms of transportation in the United States. We require all new school buses to meet safety requirements over and above those applying to all other passenger vehicles. These include requirements for improved emergency exits, roof structure, seating and fuel systems, and bus body joint integrity. These requirements help ensure that school buses are extremely safe.” (National Highway) If these buses are so safe why are children being critically hurt if there is an accident? If the National Highway Transportation Administration (NHTSA) is comparing the requirements to other passenger vehicles than they are not meeting those standards as a Dodge Caravan is a passenger vehicle and is required to have seatbelts

Why Schools Should Not Change Start Times

The first reason how this supports my claim is that most elementary, middle and high schools use the same busses. If all schools use the same busses and change the school start and end time that will have a big impact on busses. It also may mix the busses and some schools may not have busses that day. Another reason how this supports my claim is that most busses are structured around early schedules. If schools change their start times then it would only make the busses keep their positions and mess up the bus schedules so changing the start time would only cost

Persuasive Essay On Drivers Education

Driver’s Education courses are important for a new driver.  Drivers Education is proven to help young driver’s become familiar with driving and to learn important defensive driving techniques.  Our mission at Greenbrier High School should be to incorporate a Driver’s Education course into the curriculum for their students.  Teens from the ages 16-19 have the highest accident rate in the nation.  It is important for teens to complete a Driver’s Ed course so they can learn road safety rules, traffic rules and regulations, and defensive driving strategies.

The Change Of Northern Illinois University 's Bus System

The change of Northern Illinois University’s bus system is demanded throughout campus through various sources. The issue comes in hand of the student’s safety through afternoon times. Our current bus system puts not only the student’s safety on line but its staff as well. The fact of the line is, having one bus running throughout an 800 acres campus does not make it safe for students and staff to get from one place of campus to another. It’s a way to save money rather than helping students get around campus in a safe and efficient way. Although there will be more money needed to add the number of buses running after 7pm, the investment is crucial for students’ safety

Tamalpais Union High School District Budget Cuts Essay

The Ann Arbor School District is facing about a $20 million shortfall over this year and next year school budget. The district currently spends about $7.2 million on transportation and is looking at outsourcing its bussing as part of an effort to deal with its budget shortfall. The districts goals are to try to stay away from making cuts to instruction, and cutting teachers. More Michigan public school districts contracted out in 2009 for at least one of the three main support services –food, custodial or transportation- according to the Mackinac Center for Public Policy’s annual privatization survey. The school districts are not mandated to provide transportation services, and some districts have stopped providing transportation completely to save on cost. The estimated per-pupil savings estimates from transportation privatization are significant as the state Legislature discusses reducing the state-aid foundation grant per pupil.

Persuasive Essay On Driver Education

Do you know how long it takes into you get your license ? At the age of sixty without driver education you have to wait 270 days to take the test and you have to have so many hours driving with a parent. It takes six months before you can take your driver license test . But ,if you have successfully completed an approved driver education program you can get it sooner . I don’t think that’s fair . Anderson needs to change the policy to make it easier to get a driver license .

Persuasive Essay On Later Start Time

Having a later start time for schools would result in an increase in safety in students. One risk that occur when schools start earlier, is the risk of students driving to school while still sleepy. This can result in life threatening car crashes if a student falls asleep behind the wheel. Studies provided by The Encyclopedia of School Health show that the average crash rate of teen drivers went down drastically with school districts that started later. Specifically, the research showed that “the average crash rate for teenage drivers dropped 16.5% in 2 years” (“School Start Times”). Another danger that is brought up with the safety of tired students, is their awareness when crossing streets and busy areas. While those who are tired can still look and check multiple

APES In Detroit

The author of this article wrote that it is important for the citizens of Detroit to vote for a public rail and bus transit system. Puentes states that there are a myriad amount of jobs but there is also no way to get to them. Although there are many buses, trains and routes in Detroit, there are no connecting routes from one region to another or to the city itself. This makes it harder for people to get to their jobs in less than an hour. Something else the author mentions is that most of the families in Detroit receive low income, so they cannot pay for all the buses needed in order to go to work.

Persuasive Essay On Why Not To Wear Seatbelts

I lost a relative in a car crash. Can you imagine how I felt when I found out? He wasn’t wearing his seatbelt and was thrown off the road through the windshield. Car companies should start making cars that require everybody in the vehicle buckled up or else the car won’t start. Wearing a seatbelt reduces the chances of injury, also the law requires you to wear a seatbelt.

Why High School Should Start Later

First, it would cause for the bus drivers to change their daily route schedule. Elementary school students are usually starting school at around 8:30 a.m., which would be the same time as high school students if the schedules were to change. This means that the board of education would have to hire extra bus drivers to be able to get all of the students to school on time. Although, there is a solution that could easily fix the bus schedule problem. If the time schedules are changed between the elementary and high school students, meaning the elementary students show up to school earlier, then the buses would be running the same routine. This means that it will not result in extra charges for them because they would still be working the same

Essay On Stop Arm Violations

They had to use cities like Dallas as examples as to why this will work. Since San Antonio just passed this policy in June of 2016 there is not much saying yet that the number of people not stopping for the school bus has gone down. However, the city of Dallas did report “…a 25-percent decrease in the number of violations…” (Warrick and Lopez). With that decrease San Antonio is in a good position to assume that the number will also diminish in their city. The hope is that the number will drop more and more every year. With more people knowing about the outcome if they do pass a school bus that is loading or unloading children.

Should Seat Belts Be Used in Buses?

Having seat belts on buses does not mean that children will wear them and studies show that if a crash were to occur and some children were in seat belts and some were not things could go very bad. Mary M. Alward states in her article by Local School Directory.com that, “On impact, the children who are not wearing seat belts are slammed into the students who are strapped in. These children not only absorb their own body weight, but also that of the children who slam into them. This doubles the crash impact of the belted students and serious injury may occur” (Alward). This alone should be a good

Persuasive Essay On Parking

Adam complains about parking at least three time a day. He is late to economics class every Tuesday and Thursday, and Professor Willis simply cannot take it anymore. Professor Willis told Adam that he needs to wake up earlier in order to get a spot on campus, but sleep is vital to all college students. Sleep should not be compensated for the time to find parking. Adelphi should instead listen to the proposal in this essay, which deals with the plan of action to create more parking spots on campus. Spots are limited, and Adam is not alone. There is a large number of people who have a problem finding a parking spot. Parking is the number one problem on campus for both residents and commuters and a solution is needed. Adelphi has the money and power to create more parking spots on campus by extending both of the underground parking lots. The benefits of extending the underground parking lots will allow for Adelphi to cut down on their shuttle service, permit all students to park on campus, and for less accidents to occur.

Changing School Start Times Essay

Many parents rely on their older children in high school to pick up their little kids from school. This becomes a problem when high school students get out later than middle and elementary school students because the pickup arrangement is altered. According to the article, Manassas pushes back high school start times by 50 minutes (Posted 2014-04-30 01:43:00): School board decision comes in wake of studies showing improved performance with later start times, bus schedules had to be changed. This affects the younger students bus times as well because the buses are used for elementary and middle school as well as high school. Although this seems like it would be a significant change in children's days, it is important for children to learn flexibility for when they grow older.

Classism In America Essay

A study on the reliability of public transportation found that “long, heavily used bus lines on congested roadways are likely to have poor schedule reliability” (Levinson). Lower income areas tend to have a higher population density, which increases the congestion and overall reliability of busses (Levinson). Delays at the beginning of a bus route are then propagated to later stops creating further setbacks (Levinson). Bus operators have also been found skip certain stops, if they believe they are too dangerous (Levinson). Since poor people do tend to live in more treacherous areas, this further compounds their unequal transportation

Essay On School Bus Behavior

School Bus Behaviour Management Strategies Certainly, school bus is one of the best means of transporting students to and from school. But what about their behavior on the school bus? Who is responsible for maintaining school bus discipline? Managing student behavior is never an impossible matter. Bus drivers are greatly appreciated for maintaining a steady safety record till now. And you can imagine how difficult is to handle a school bus full of impish students. You can not control school bus students via a rear view mirror alone. Moreover, two things should be essentially considered above everything. Firstly, you should recognize the fact that the school bus is the extension of a school environment. Secondly, as there are no other school …show more content…

However, it is an effective approach to teach and review positive school bus behavior in students. But the number of rules should not be more than 6 and the rules should be stated in a coherent language. Presumably, you can add the fact that school bus transportation is a privilege and not a right for students. In addition, you can organize a meeting to discuss regarding the contract and parents can give suggestions on the rules, and ultimately, they will understand the importance of school bus behavior via this meeting. Teach proper school bus behavior When students are taught regarding proper school bus behavior, they are likely to follow those rules. At the beginning of every academic year, students should be provided with appropriate guidance on school bus safety rules. If possible, show them a demonstration regarding it in the school assembly. Else, you can train elder students on positive school bus behavior and thereby, demonstrate it to his fellow passengers. Of course, maintaining discipline inside the school bus is one of the challenging issues for school bus drivers. Arguably, proper guidance and supervision for students regarding school bus discipline is the tablet of success. However, the above strategies are essential for maintaining appropriate school bus discipline among

She concludes that it is possible, but does not account for the slow school buses. Adnan claims the buses would take approximately 10 minutes to leave the lot, but Koeing fails to check if possibly the school busing system has changed. Also, in Jay’s account Adnan called him to pick him up from the Best Buy through a payphone. However, the blueprint for the store and several sources confirm that there was never a pay phone there in 1999.

Satire Essay On Teenage Driving

Teen Driving All my life I dreamed of driving a car on my own, growing up my father would sit me on his lap while he drives his dads 76’ Corvette Stingray. The steering wheel vibrations, rumbling of the engine smell of hot asphalt gave me such an adrenaline rush at a young age. Ever since then, I knew as soon as I could drive I would do everything in my power to do so. When I came of age to drive, my parents didn’t trust me.

Morality In The 57 Bus, By Dashka Slater

An individual's morals and beliefs are developed with age through all the experiences one will encounter in their lifetime, though they can be pushed aside when the need to conform with the majority is more prominent. Because of this, the need to maintain balance between authenticity to one's principles and ethics and conforming to the majority's standard is prevalent in the human race. In the novel ‘The 57 Bus’ author Dashka Slater tells the true story of two teenagers who encounter a crime on the bus as the victim, Sasha, and the perpetrator, Richard.

Explain The Ways Of Working Within The School Environment

Within the school environment the ethos of the school should be noticed upon entering and the daily performance of the staff and pupils who attend and work for the school. All the staff that work in the environment have an important responsibly when it comes to children as children and young people are influenced by the behaviour they see from their role models, which can be teachers, family members and friends and teaching assistants such as myself. They are influenced by not just my behaviour but every adult within the setting, so everyone needs to make sure that they are not displaying negative behaviour or displaying a negative way of dealing with certain people or incidents involving others, otherwise this could affect other younger children

Essay On Racism In School

Racism: Why It Should Be Taught To Children Racism has, and always has had, a great effect on American society. Still to this day, even after the civil war over slavery in the 19th century and the anti-segregation movements of the 20th century, countless peoples still face ridicule over the color of their skin or the shape of their face. If it were to be taught in schools that judging someone based on their appearance is bad, then perhaps there wouldn’t be such an integration of racism in modern American society. Not simply learning ‘don’t be a racist’ in a high school social studies course while half asleep or thinking of what’s for lunch, but the concept of just how much it can affect someone’s life in such a negative way should be taught to children throughout their whole school careers. Riding the school bus taught lessons that traveled through the journey of life

In a town of 7,500, I found myself in a long line of traffic that would not budge. In either lane.

Finally, I eased into the old Tastee Freeze lot, pulled my sewing machine from the back seat and walked it across the road to The Common Thread where I was dropping it for repair.

“What’s going on?” I exclaimed.

“School pick-up line.”

I stared at the jam of a hundred or more cars. “Doesn’t anyone ride the school bus anymore?”

Riding the school bus for 10 years was one of the most meaningful experiences of my life. On the first day of first grade, I begged Mama to let me take the bus instead of riding with her when she went to register me. Daily, since a toddler, I sat on the front steps to watch it pass our house and dreamed of those big doors swooshing open for me.

Oh, the lessons I learned from that gentle yellow bus — such as the discipline of being ready and on time. The school bus waited for no one. There was no cajoling, threatening or begging by Mama. I knew to be ready and waiting when it turned off the highway and headed down our road.

Only once in 10 years did I miss the bus. It was a minute early; I was a minute late. My hand was on the front door knob when I heard it slow as the driver glanced around for reliable me. My heart fell as I watched its tail lights head over the bridge. I had missed the bus.

Literally and figuratively, I would never do that again.

A friendship from those school bus days instilled confidence. Vicki, two years older and one of the most popular girls in the entire school, saved me a seat beside her every morning and afternoon. Sometimes, she wore her cheerleading suit and that made me feel even more special.

The school bus introduced me to the seasons that come and go. In the gentle spring, birds serenaded me as I waited at the mailbox while autumn brought a colorful array of oranges, yellows and reds to entertain me. It became my favorite season and those became the colors I wear and with which I decorate.

The bitter-cold Appalachian mornings left me shivering miserably while the rain storms forced me to shelter under the front porch, then run, books clutched tightly in my arms, as hard as I could when I saw the headlights turn the corner.

Later, I realized that it was a metaphor for life: storms would rage occasionally, birds would rejoice at times, and there would be days of sheer beauty.

My brother-in-law, Rodney, drove a school bus. Every afternoon, his small son waited excitedly in front of the house for Rodney to return from his route. Rodney would stop, open the doors and welcome his most cherished passenger to ride the 20 yards to the bus’ parking place. What a memory.

One of Rodney’s colleagues had a 9-year-old passenger who was typical boyish trouble. The first child on in the morning, the last off in the afternoon, Jimmy spent every ride in a haze of flying fists and bloody noses. No amount of disciplining or trips to the principal’s office could deter him.

In the midst of one fierce back-of-the bus battles, the driver pulled over to the side of the road.

“Jimmy, come here!” he bellowed. The little boy, head hung, slunk to the front.

“This fightin’ is gonna stop. TODAY.” The driver commenced into a serious come-to-Jesus. Suddenly, Jimmy’s head snapped up, his eyes widened. He was upset.

“But, Mr. Jackson, you don’t understand!!!” he cried out. He pounded his chest frantically. “One day, I’M gonna win!”

That particular school bus lesson has traveled with me down through the journey of life.

It has served me well.

English Summary

Short Paragraph on When I Missed My School Bus

It was a Saturday. I had seen the movie on TV the previous night that was telecast from 11.30 PM to 1 30 AM. I went to sleep after 2 AM. My mother had prepared breakfast and was taking her bath. She had thought that I was getting ready in my room.

She was surprised when she saw me sleeping as she came out She woke me up with great difficulty. I prepared myself hastily and rushed to the bus stop. There was no student waiting for the school bus.

I realised at once that I would have to reach the school by the local bus. The buses were overcrowded and some commuters were hanging on doors. As the bus stopped I entered from the front door.

The driver was nice. He did not object when I requested him to let me stand in a corner. The conductor asked me to buy a ticket. I passed on a two-rupee note through another passenger and requested him to give the same to the conductor.

This note passed from passenger to passenger and reached the bus-conductor at last. He sent the ticket and a fifty-paisa coin back in the same manner. At every stop, new passengers kept on entering the bus.

I was badly squeezed. At last, my stop came and I Jerked myself out. The stop was at least half a kilometre away from my school. I ran as fast as possible but prayer had already started.

I was made to stand among the latecomers. When I told my teacher honestly that the last show of the movie was the main culprit, he excused me and allowed me to attend the classes.

I learnt the lesson not to keep awake late in the night. As I had not taken bath, I kept scratching my skin and continued to feel sleepy all the time during school Hours.

I am a regular traveller in my Private school bus service , “City Tour and Travels” . My bus route is the almost same throughout the year . Travelling by school bus is sometimes interesting, sometimes boring depend upon route followed

The Morning Sight, No Traffic No Enjoy

The morning time of bus is at 7.00 am. The bus halts at 14 stops, picking and dropping children to and fro. In the morning there is hurry and pressure of school. All the shops and market closed at the time and road are nearly traffic less due to there is no any office time other than education department.

As School Over Enjoying Time Start

I go straight to the bus as I like to get a window seat so that I can enjoy the sights on the way home. It has become a great experience for me as I observe people and places. It never tires me to see all of the sights every day

Scenario Completely Changes When We Return Home

But the scenario completely changes when we return home in the afternoon by school bus. There is no pressure or hurry. Outside the bus, streets are overcrowded with a lot of dirt, dust, loo and heat emitted by vehicles and worsened by pollution. Since these are office hours, we find traffic jams every now and then.

People blow their horns unnecessarily. While waiting at the signals, people keep on staring at our school bus. Some of us make funny remarks at people or we make funny faces and they smile back at us.

Bus Passes Through Old Market

The school bus goes through old buildings that were built in the British era; the Anglo Saracenic architecture fascinates me. The tall red buildings make me wonder about the olden days. The pigeons have made it their homes and I can hear them cooing, though it is faint.

Thus I enjoyed everyday on returning tour of my journey from school to house and found daily in some what new at every place.

essay on my school bus

The Uncertain Future of the Yellow School Bus

This is an edition of The Atlantic Daily, a newsletter that guides you through the biggest stories of the day, helps you discover new ideas, and recommends the best in culture. Sign up for it here.

The yellow school bus has remained remarkably consistent over the past century. But as a smaller share of kids ride the bus, its role is shifting.

First, here are three new stories from The Atlantic :

  • Inside the decision to kill Iran’s Qassem Soleimani
  • Trump’s assassination fantasy has a darker purpose.
  • Mad Max ’s George Miller is taking on the apocalypse (again).

A Mixed Legacy

Across county and state lines, school buses are remarkably consistent. The yolky exterior color, called National School Bus Glossy Yellow, has remained the go-to shade since 1939. Buses are outfitted with a pop-out stop sign and vinyl seats, which, in my memory, tend to be ripped up and held together with strips of duct tape. Riding the yellow school bus is a tradition shared by generations of American students—but that experience is less common now than in previous decades.

In 2022, only about a third of students rode the bus to school, down from roughly 37 percent five years before, according to a Washington Post analysis of the National Household Travel Survey . More students are getting dropped off by car or driving to class—a trend that accelerated after the coronavirus pandemic began, especially among the children of college-educated parents.

Many people are nostalgic about the school bus, but its legacy—and present—is mixed. The bus was once a transformative force in American education, enabling a switch from highly local, one-room schoolhouses, Antero Garcia, an education professor at Stanford University, told me. And in the years following Brown v. Board of Education , buses became a potent symbol of desegregation. But for many kids, the bus can be a place of stress. Students may face discipline from drivers (many of whom struggle with low pay and odd working hours) or bullying from peers. Garcia also noted that it can feel like a form of punishment for bus riders to spend hours commuting each day just to get the same educational opportunities as students who can be driven by parents.

The bus is a tool that touches millions of kids’ lives every day, but on the whole, these vehicles have hardly improved over decades—even as the education system flocks to other, new technologies. Its stagnation has come about in part because administrators tend to focus on interventions that improve test scores “rather than a dusty old bus,” Garcia said. He also noted that “there’s an assumption that school buses are for working-class kids, largely kids of color.” (According to the 2017 National Household Travel Survey , 70 percent of students from low-income families ride the school bus, whereas a majority of students from non-low-income families are driven to school in a personal vehicle.)

For years, the school-bus system has struggled to recover from a severe bus-driver shortage : At the start of this past school year, there were about 192,000 drivers—a 15 percent decline from four years earlier. From 2009 to 2019, the number of bus drivers dropped by 22 percent; in that same period, the number of students enrolled in K–12 schools grew by some 1.4 million. Moreover, the school-bus system doesn’t serve all students—a 2020 study of New York City’s school-bus ridership found that Black and Hispanic K–6 students are more likely to attend schools where buses are unavailable.

Still, some school districts are making changes: Efforts to add electric buses to school fleets have gained momentum lately. Some well-meaning educators have tried taking advantage of bus time by giving students more homework—which, Garcia said, “is the last thing kids want.” He wonders if the bus could become a site of enrichment rather than tedium. What if the bus were an opportunity for peer mentoring, for example, or film classes?

The bus is a liminal site: Bus time is part of the school day, but it’s not class time. Students gather together, but they have less structure, and there’s less of a focus on academics. This freedom makes the bus worth looking at in full, as a meaningful, rich space for kids in America.

The Uncertain Future of the Yellow School Bus

An Essay about School Bus

The school bus is one of the most loved forms of transportation to school. The school buses of today are designed in such a way that they are more durable and more conscientiously maintained. Most school buses come in crush size and height standards and bright colors, with cross-view mirrors and reinforced sides for added safety. They also have stop sign arms and flashing red lights.

School bus drivers are also screened and required to undergo special training that involve ensuring their young passengers’ safety and security, first aid and medical procedures, road safety, and other important concerns. They are also required to undergo testing for drug and alcohol consumption as well as driving record checks. Traffic laws are implemented specifically for school bus transport to make sure that students are protected.

In many cities, a school bus is a familiar sight. Students are picked up from their doorsteps and safely brought to school and back. Most school bus services are highly reliable. Most students enjoy riding on school buses instead of carpooling because they get to interact with many other students from school. They can also be as noisy as they want to be, laughing and shouting during the daily travel. It allows them to build friendships outside of the classroom. Riding a school bus will ensure that a student will not be late for school and does not have to worry about how to get home. School bus drivers are educated to observe traffic rules and road safety. They do not drive recklessly and they make sure to follow road signs. They are also trained in school transportation emergency procedures. Most parents will feel comfortable knowing that their children are in good hands as they travel to and from school.

Additionally, responsible school administrations also hold evacuation drills so that students understand emergency procedures such as entering or leaving the school bus in an organized manner, giving priority or assistance to students with disabilities, and understanding the location and purpose of emergency exits. While a school bus is generally safe, one cannot discount the fact that untoward incidents may happen. Thus, it is better to educate and train both drivers and riders for everyone’s safety and security.

An essay about school bus will not be complete without saying that there is also a disadvantage. Since the school bus is on a specific route, some students will have to get up and prepare for school really early if they are among the very first ones who get picked up. Similarly, some students will get home later than most as they are the last ones to be dropped off along the route. Nevertheless, having a child ride a school bus is still a safer proposition than having them take their chances with public transport.

My school trip essay

School trips leave a great impact in the mind of the student, where he goes without his family, with his friends and colleagues, which allow him to rely on himself and take responsibility and enjoy the activities of the trip.

Each school planning for trips is as a recreational and educational way, supervised by social workers and school supervisors, who planning visits, ticketing, bus booking, etc.

I went on a school trip to (name of the city) of (Governorate name). of (city area in km) and (population number) approximately.

I prepared my small bag and put sandwiches, juice and water for the trip. I went to sleep early to wake up early to be full of energy on the journey.

We rode the bus in front of the school in the early morning and we left our parents and friends who did not come with us.

The bus driver displayed a documentary about the city we were going to visit and the tour supervisor told us about the directions and instructions we should follow and how to act in case of lost. He provided us emergency numbers and asked us to write them in a paper and keep in our pocket.

We arrived at our destination and started visiting the (museum name) which is a large museum featuring many important items that tell us the history of the city.

Then we went to visit the open museum which is an open area with many beautiful items.

Then we went to visit the important landmarks of the city.

The last stop of the trip was to visit the amusement park, a recreational city with lots of games.

The supervisor gave us two hours to enjoy our time, play the games we want and assemble before the door of the amusement park in preparation for riding the bus and back to our city.

We gathered two hours later in front of the amusement park door, the supervisor checked everyone’s presence and then we boarded the bus and returned to our city.

It was a beautiful day we enjoyed it a lot and we saw many of the city’s famous sights.

We learned a lot about its history and the history of its inhabitants.

Finally, we reached our city late at night. Our families were waiting for us.

We thanked the tour supervisor and went to our homes to sleep and prepare for school the next day.

a memorable school trip essay

It’s great to enjoy a little bit away from school and home for rejuvenation and energy, and this is exactly what happened. After working hard and excelling in school, I was able to go out on an unforgettable school trip. Through this trip, I was able to define my goals and benefit greatly from them.

This was an excursion to one of the seminars of the great Steve Jones. Just being in the midst of this huge crowd of scientists, inventors and businessmen made me know what I want to become in the future, and what are my upcoming priorities.

On this journey I was able to find answers to many of my questions and found the inspiration I wanted. Now I want to become in the future an inventor of something useful that benefits humanity and achieve great success for me, whether material or moral, through fame.

It is wonderful to know the importance of technology to society and how we inevitably go to it and the development of all means of services around us. And with just a little bit of clinging to the dream and fighting for it like Steve did, I can certainly succeed too.

simple essay on school trip

I feel very happy to go on a trip to the football stadium. This was a big surprise for us, to be able to watch an important match with friends.

Of course, I watched many matches with my family before, but this time the experience is different because it is with my friends and I was able to express and launch my enthusiasm, without feeling any pressure.

I enjoy this experience so much, and for sure I want to repeat this experience in other activities. Now I can’t wait to go home and tell my brother about this experience, and that in the future he should try going out with his friends on school trips and enjoying this holiday. It gives great psychological comfort and a boost of activity that helps to return to study with full vitality and activity.

essay on school trip to a park

Oh my gosh, I can’t describe the beauty of nature that I enjoyed during my last school trip. There is a very big difference between the constant presence between the big and fast industrial life and the relaxation in the vast gardens and parks that do not contain any noise.

It is great to go through this experience and go to one of the most beautiful parks that contain very beautiful gardening works and organized views of trees and roses.

The wonderful engineering work that I saw in the park is one of the best landscapes that my friends and I enjoyed watching.

And certainly immediately we felt the amount of interest and love from the people responsible for this place, and how they can preserve and show this place this beauty.

Of course I would love to go back on a school trip to the park and enjoy physical games with my friends like we did. This was one of the things I enjoyed in nature. It is great to find large green areas. This helped me relax a lot.

school tour experience essay

I would very much like to write an article about my experience in the last school tour, and point out the things I liked the most.

I find this tour very different from many of our previous tours. Previously, the tour was in only one place, and curiosity and enthusiasm ended before the tour ended.

But certainly this was different when we were able to visit many places in the same tour, such as the museum, the garden and the library. All of these places had a different effect.

We find when visiting the museum and meeting one of the guides working in the museum that he has that interesting and funny way of explaining the holdings. It makes you want to know more about its origin and the civilization it comes from.

But due to the lack of time, this made me even more excited, eager to listen. I am also eager to see another place and enjoy. This made it more beautiful and did not leave any way for boredom.

When visiting the library, I was able to sign one of the famous books and see some of the authors of these books. I always watched this event through movies only. It is great to try this experience and get some interesting and useful books.

But certainly nothing is so wonderful after a long day of listening and paying attention as visiting the park and walking around it to release all that energy.

I cannot describe the beauty of how I felt in the experience of the games and activities that we did inside the park. I can say this was the best school trip experience I’ve ever had.

a school field trip essay in English

One of the great school field trips I enjoyed was this trip, this weekend we were able to go on a school field trip to the zoo.

And there were a lot of interesting animals that wanted to feed and take pictures, many pictures with them. But of course, every field trip cannot pass without new experiences, some of which you will benefit from and others that delight you.

I can’t stop laughing whenever I remembered the monkeys, and how they used to behave, I can’t believe how smart this animal is, and how it can make you happy at any time. And also watching the peacock, what a beauty!, I did not feel the consistency and beauty of the colors, as I saw in this bird.

It was wonderful to learn some information about the habitat of many animals, which made me very eager to read about them, how they live and how important the group is to them, and how to unite among them, such as the blue whale and other collective animals that live in groups and like the wolf as well.

Certainly this field trip was very wonderful and contained a lot of information that I benefited from.

Essay on “A bus accident” Complete Essay for Class 10, Class 12 and Graduation and other classes.

A bus accident

Once I happened to travel by bus. It was packed to its capacity. The rush was due to a fair. The bus was delayed at the bus stand by a few minutes. The driver tried to make up for the lost time. He drove the bus at top speed. Some of the passengers did not like it. They asked him not to do but he was a reckless driver. He did not care for their advice.

We saw a bus coming from the opposite direction. He noticed it, but did not turn the bus to a side. When it came very near he turned the bus to a side. The speed was high. He could not control it. The bus struck against a tree we received a severe jerk. I was sitting near the window. The window opened of itself. I fell out of the bus. After striking against the tree the bus fell into a pit and turned turtle. I was slightly hurt but escaped from serious injuries. I stood up and ran to help the wounded persons.

Some of the passengers were lying senseless, while others were crying with pain. A few pedestrians came to help us. We extricated the wounded passengers and rendered first aid to them. The condition of the driver was serious. The limbs of some of the passengers were mutilated. After a few minutes another bus came. It stopped. Its passengers got down. With their help the wounded passengers. Were laid in the bus. They were carried to the nearest hospital. The bus returned after a short time and carried its passengers.

Essay No. 2

A Bus Accident

Accidents of tongas and cycles are very common. We read about them every day. They are more common in big cities than in small towns.

I saw a bus accident yesterday. It took place in the open. I was going to Agra. The bus left Shekohabad and reached near the canal bridge. The road rises very high at the bridge from both sides. Unfortunately a car was coming from the opposite direction. Both the drivers forgot to blow the horns, since they did not see anything ahead. The car being new made no sound.

As our bus reached the bridge the car came up suddenly. The driver of our bus became nervous. He lost his presence of mind. He tried to put the brakes but there was no time. So he gave a sudden turn to the wheels.

Unluckily the road was not very broad at the bridge. The canal was deep on both sides. The result was that the driver could not control the bus. It slipped down from the road and below into the canal below. All efforts of the driver to stop it failed. Fortunately, the water in the canal was not deep. The bus was damaged.

But the damage to the bus was not an important thing if we compared it to the loss of the lives of the people in the bus. There were about 50 persons in the bus – 40 men, 6 women and 4 children. As the bus turned to the left, everyone of us gave out a loud cry. But all was over in a few seconds. We were hurt and made wet with the water of the canal. Four of the passengers died then and there. Their skulls were broken and they died of the shock. None of us was injured seriously. Seven received small scratches and injuries on different parts of the body. One woman, two men and I escaped  by the grace of God without much hurt. I thanked God.

The car was stopped. Inside the car was a retired Government officer. He was very sorry for the poor passengers. He gladly took the seriously wounded passengers in his car and sent them to the hospital where they received medial aid. The doctors gave them medicines and bandaged their wounds. Two to them died soon after.

The police had little to do in the matter, since the driver had died. The most wonderful thing was the escape of the child. Strange are the ways of God. No one harm his whom god saves.

A School Picnic Essay

My school organized a picnic on Children’s Day. It has been one of the most memorable days of my life. The school took us to a resort that had swings and greenery. We went there by bus with all our friends.

Upon reaching the location, they gave us hot tomato soup as winters were going on. After that, we roamed around the resort that was filled with greenery. I took a lot of photos with my friends and teachers.

During lunchtime, my school gave us a hot and delicious meal which was very nutritious. It had fried cottage cheese, steamed rice, hot chapattis, potato curry and spicy curd. Everyone loved the meal and finished it in no time.

After that, we played a lot of games. The resort was organizing a race so I participated with my friends in it. We got the second position and won a prize containing tasty snacks and fun stationery.

Finally, the picnic ended with a group photo together with our friends and teachers. On our way back, we sang so many songs together and enjoyed it greatly during the picnic.

Why electric school buses could be a star in the clean-energy transition

“switching to electric school buses, we know, will play a really important role in creating a healthier environment,” the ceo of the american lung association said..

With over 20 million daily riders, the US school bus system is the country’s largest form of mass transportation—and therefore stands to play a major role in the clean-energy transition.

That was the consensus during a May 15 panel on the benefits of electric school buses hosted by the Zero Emission Transportation Association.

“The most significant benefit that we see for electric school buses is the benefit for children to breathe cleaner air,” Carolina Chacon Mendonza, coalition manager for the Alliance for Electric School Buses, said on the panel. “There is no amount of exposure to diesel pollution that is safe for children.”

“Black students, children with disabilities, children from tribal nations, and low-income students rely on diesel school buses more than their peers,” reflecting a disparity in who is exposed to the vehicles’ harmful diesel emissions, according to Sue Gander, director of the Electric School Bus Initiative at the World Resources Institute.

Nearly four out of 10 people in the US live in areas with unhealthy levels of air pollution, according to the American Lung Association’s latest State of the Air report . And heavy-duty vehicles like school buses contribute a disproportionate amount of this pollution, according to ALA CEO Harold Wimmer.

“Switching to electric school buses, we know, will play a really important role in creating a healthier environment,” he said, citing a 2022 ALA report that estimated $735 billion in cumulative health benefits and 66,800 avoided deaths could be achieved by 2050 by eliminating emissions from heavy-duty transportation.

Enter electric school buses, some 8,800 of which are on the road today or will be soon, according to the panel (still a small proportion of the roughly half a million school buses in the country’s fleet). The Environmental Protection Agency has allocated $5 billion through 2026 to help school districts electrify their vehicle fleets, and the agency recently made another $1 billion in funding available to decarbonize the heavy-duty vehicle sector; 70% of that funding is for school buses.

Keep up with the innovative tech transforming business

Tech Brew keeps business leaders up-to-date on the latest innovations, automation advances, policy shifts, and more, so they can make informed decisions about tech.

“Every school district in the country should be applying for these funds,” Nate Baguio, SVP of commercial development for electric school bus manufacturer Lion Electric, said. Lion even offers to write grant applications on behalf of school districts to help expedite the process, he said.

At least one school district is ahead of the curve: California’s Oakland Unified School District is slated to become the first major US school district to have a 100% electric school bus fleet, according to a May 15 press release from transportation services provider Zum. The fleet will be delivered by the start of the 2024–2025 school year, per Zum.

And that’s not all: The fleet will be equipped with vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology, enabling it to send energy back to the power grid to the tune of 2.1 gigawatt hours annually, according to the announcement. Zum will provide the district with 74 electric buses as well as the bidirectional chargers that enable V2G capabilities.

The school district received funding from EPA’s Clean School Bus program, as well as from state and local resources. Zum is working on similar initiatives for larger school districts, including San Francisco and Los Angeles.

“This historic milestone is a win-win proposition: Electric school buses with V2G provide students with cleaner, fume-free transportation and allow us to send untapped energy from the bus batteries back to the grid,” Zum founder and CEO Ritu Narayan said in the press release, “creating an enormous impact on grid resilience.”
