In the past I have emailed home. I´m thinking to have my TA fill out a homework slip for those who missed hw instead of me emailing for next year. How do you inform parents (and the age of my kids their parents normally know and it´s generally the parents´fault that hw did not get home...of course I always have a few incidents that parents didn´t know and it was because hw fell out...or hidden!!). I just quickly made a missing homework slip: https://docs.google.com/drawings/d/1Ds35ZL0OMDpxHUK5Xjz9uRxccGKi5b1ooiQnqS_bgGU/edit?usp=sharing I don´t know if I will use it. What do you all do and use?

I give homework but I don't actually use it for grades because I know that most of them will not be returned. It depends on where you work and the parent involvement. If it's normally like 1 or 2 kids then I would say maybe a slip would suffice. Me on the other hand, I'm lucky if I get half of them back, and I rarely see parents. It's hard to even get an answer on the phone. I hold my students accountable for the work we do in class only.
a2z said: ↑ Is the bolded part really what you intended to say? I ask because I can't understand how it can be the parents fault the homework did not get home . As for the slip, it is cute, but if the problem is that the homework doesn't make it home in the first place, you will have the same problem with a slip of paper. E-mailing may be a better option unless the parent doesn't check the e-mail that was given to you. Click to expand...

Incomplete homework is a battle that wasn't worth fighting (for me, at least). Plus, it seems as though the kids who never turned in homework were the ones who needed recess the most; therefore, I wasn't about to take away their recess (not that you were planning to do that, TamiJ! I know many teachers do, though). I did, however, reward students who did turn in homework for the entire month. On the last Friday of each month, we had Lunch Bunch. Instead of eating lunch in the cafeteria, students with 100% completion rate for the month would eat lunch in the classroom with me while watching a movie. At the end of lunch, we'd have ice cream. No one wanted to miss Lunch Bunch. No one!

As a 6th grade teacher, I'm thrilled to hear that even lower grade teachers are focusing in HW completion habits. I suspect that those disorganized little 1st grade apples who can't remember to take papers home , nor bring them back, have not fallen far from the adults in their trees who don't remember to renew their car registrations. Keep fighting the battle, but don't expect to win every time. I use a "pink slip" that each student fills out. It contains a check list with reasons why the assignment wasn't completed, and a place for students to say when they plan to complete it. I'm thinking that won't work for you, sorry.
Thanks for elaborating, TamiJ. Based on your further description, it seems your change has nothing to do with getting homework back from these kids but to off load your communication to the TA. I doubt it will help these 2 families ensure the homework gets done at home (or ensures it gets back to school). It also could create a situation where the parent then can claim she doesn't know about missing homework if the slip doesn't get home or even if it does because there will be no proof that the slip was actually sent or made it home. So, I can't say that the slip is a good idea. It depends on the purpose of the slip.

My homework for the last 4 years has been something I couldn't give a grade even if I wanted too. Our phonics program gives word lists and little readers. I also give my own word list. At the end of the six weeks when I give them the assessment for the 6 weeks I know who has done their homework and who hasn't. It's obvious when we have a list of 10 words and your kid doesn't know any of them. I put the lists and little readers into their folders every week. If yours hasn't been touched or spilled on it's pretty obvious then too. I don't give rewards for doing homework nor do I take things away. I teach kinder and I try very hard at the beginning of the year to start motivating them and making them understand homework is very important. And that it is THEIR responsibility to do it. Just like bringing their folder back everyday is on them. Not Mom. But on the other hand if parents don't ask or motivate their own children to care about their education then why should a child. I ask everyday to both my children I have at home, do you have homework, and they are both motivated but they are still children who need reminding.
Then I think the slip is a great idea! You offload some of your work that isn't producing results and have the communication that is required. I hope it goes over well.

I'm grade 3... I have kids sign my missing hw book. If they bring in the next day, they cross off name. When a kid signs the book 3-4 times in a short time period without bringing the work in, i send a form i created home to be signed by parents...it says something along the lines of: ......has not turned in the following hw assignments. I have discussed the importance of independent practice and responsibility with your student. Your support at home in reinforcing these ideas regarding homework is appreciated. Please sign below to indicate you have received this notice and have your student return this to m. Thank you.

If their child wasn't able to participate, they gave me a million excuses as to why the homework wasn't done. One parent even complained to administration. It just wasn't worth the battle. I don't really assign a lot of homework, but if students are missing homework I just have them stay in for recess to work on it. They have one 35-minute recess. I make them work for 15 minutes, and then let them go out, so they still have 20 minutes to play. Most of the time, they finish the homework in the 15 minutes. If they don't, I have them bring it home to finish. Back to your original question, I think your homework slips are a good idea. I might try something similar, just as a way to notify parents that homework was missing. Although, the kids who are usually missing homework are the ones whose parents don't check their folders and responsibility logs. Click to expand...

Incomplete Homework Notice

incomplete homework slip

Printed Name: ______________________________________

#: ____________

Today’s Date: ________________________

Completing your homework is your responsibility as a student.

Missing Assignments: ____________________________________________________

I do not have my homework today because:

 I did the assigned homework, but I left it at home.

 I forgot to do my homework.

 I did not bring home what I needed to do my homework.

 Other—please explain below. (To be completed by student)

__________________________________________________________________

Homework is tracked as follows:

 Unfinished and partially finished homework is recorded as incomplete. It should be stapled to a pink slip, completed the next evening, in addition to the regular homework, and then be checked and signed by a parent. Earned “incompletes” will be tracked for the report card under “Characteristics of Successful Learners.”

 Grades are determined as follows for each marking period: Proficient = 0-3 incomplete assignments, Needs Improvement = 4 or more incomplete assignments.

 For every two school weeks that students receive no incompletes, they will receive a homework pass, which is good for skipping a future homework assignment!

PLEASE NOTE: Homework is posted daily on the “Homework” page of my website so that parents may verify the child’s homework book. In the event that the website is not updated, students are still accountable for the evening’s work as listed on the homework

board in the classroom.

Parents, please keep up an on-going discussion at home about responsibility and the importance of developing good work habits. On the back, you will find some suggestions and possible discussion points. For some students, developing good habits takes time, persistence, consistency, and a united front at school and home, but the long-term pay-off will be that your child will develop the work ethic needed to be successful in school and beyond.

Parent’s Signature _______________________________________________________

Student Responsibilities

 Participate in class and ask for help if you are confused about today’s lessons or the homework.

 Copy homework into planner at the end of each day—AFTER the teacher has reviewed the assignments. Copy exactly what is written on the board so there is no confusion at home.

 Pack up all materials needed to complete homework properly. Try highlighting each assignment in

your planner as you place it, and any related materials, in your homework folder.

 At home, complete homework as independently as possible and with a high level of effort, including neatness and writing conventions. Try checking off the assignments in your planner as you complete them and then show your completed homework and planner to a parent each night.

 Have your homework out and organized on your desk to review the following day.

 Correct homework with the class. Participate and ask questions so you can learn from mistakes.

Some Suggestions for Parents

 Try to help your child develop positive homework routines and attitudes by making homework a priority and reaffirming its importance.

 Set a regular time, location, and routine to complete work.

 Check student agenda and/or the homework webpage to ensure all work is complete.

 Hold your child accountable for completing work thoroughly and with a high level of effort. (For example, require your child to show their calculations on paper. Encourage them to find and correct their mistakes. Expect neatness and correct capitalization, punctuation, spelling, etc.)

 Coach your child if he/she is confused, helping them to work through it. Be sure to jot a note on the page to make the teacher aware that your child needed extra help.

 Avoid trying to rescue your child from an” incomplete”—such as bringing them back to school to grab forgotten work, dropping off a signed test left on the kitchen table, writing a note to explain why the homework is not at school, etc. Your child will learn much more by experiencing a small consequence and will subsequently change their behavior faster, especially if they are held accountable both at school and at home. Of course, actual family emergencies are the exception.

 If your child receives an incomplete, encourage them to own their actions rather than make excuses for them. Receiving one or two incompletes is normal and provides students an opportunity to improve their work habits. We will spend a lot of time reinforcing responsibility in the classroom, especially regarding homework. Please make it part of your family conversations as well.

How To: Help Students to Complete Missing Work: The Late-Work Teacher-Student Conference

  • Self-Management

incomplete homework slip

The reasons that students fall behind in assignments are many. Students who are just developing homework skills , for example, often need more time than peers to complete independent assignments, can find it challenging to focus their attention when working on their own, and may not have efficient study skills (Cooper & Valentine, 2001). To be sure, student procrastination and avoidance in work assignments is a widespread problem. And many students who fall behind in their work also develop a maladaptive, self-reinforcing pattern of escape-maintained behavior: as these students owe ever-increasing amounts of late work, they respond to the anxiety generated by that overhang of overdue assignments by actively avoiding that work. And thus the problem only grows worse (Hawkins & Axelrod, 2008).

When a student begins to slip in the completion and submission of assignments, the teacher can take steps proactively to interrupt this work-avoidant pattern of behavior by meeting with the student to create a plan to catch up with late work. (It is also recommended that the parent attend such a conference, although parent participation is not required.) In this 'late-work' conference, the teacher and student inventory what work is missing, negotiate a plan to complete that overdue work, and perhaps agree on a reasonable penalty for any late work turned in. Teacher, student (and parent, if attending) then sign off on the work plan. The teacher also ensures that the atmosphere at the meeting is supportive, rather than blaming, toward the student. And of course, any work plan hammered out at this meeting should seem attainable to the student.

Below in greater detail are the steps that the teacher and student would follow at a meeting to renegotiate missing work. (NOTE: Teachers can use the Student Late-Work Planning Form: Middle & High School to organize and document these late-work conferences.):

  • Inventory All Missing Work. The teacher reviews with the student all late or missing work. The student is given the opportunity to explain why the work has not yet been submitted.
  • Negotiate a Plan to Complete Missing Work. The teacher and student create a log with entries for all of the missing assignments. Each entry includes a description of the missing assignment and a due date by which the student pledges to submit that work. This log becomes the student’s work plan. It is important that the submission dates for late assignments be realistic--particularly for students who owe a considerable amount of late work and are also trying to keep caught up with current assignments.  A teacher and student may agree, for example, that the student will have two weeks to complete and submit four late writing assignments. NOTE: Review this form as a tool to organize and document the student’s work plan.
  • [Optional] Impose a Penalty for Missing Work. The teacher may decide to impose a penalty for the work being submitted late. Examples of possible penalties are a reduction of points (e.g., loss of 10 points per assignment) or the requirement that the student do additional work on the assignment than was required of his or her peers who turned it in on time.  If imposed, such penalties would be spelled out at this teacher-student conference. If penalties are given, they should be balanced and fair, permitting the teacher to impose appropriate consequences while allowing the student to still see a path to completing the missing work and passing the course.
  • Periodically Check on the Status of the Missing-Work Plan. If the schedule agreed upon by teacher and student to complete and submit all late work exceeds two weeks, the teacher (or other designated school contact, such as a counselor) should meet with the student weekly while the plan is in effect. At these meetings, the teacher checks in with the student to verify that he or she is attaining the plan milestones on time and still expects to meet the submission deadlines agreed upon. If obstacles to emerge, the teacher and student engage in problem-solving to resolve them.

Missing Assignments siip I order a pad of them from Really Good Stuff. What I like about it is that it has a carbon copy so I have a record of it if the original slip doesn't get returned.

I haven't used them before, but I intend to this year. So, I just wrote up something simple.

excuse note here is one i "borrowed" from somewhere...i have a sneaky feeling from someone here! it used to say "homework excuse" but i changed it to "assignment excuse". i like the idea that they are held accountable for the work. it doesn't require a parent signature because there are 2 other places parents would be able to find out their kid didn't turn in work. i don't need one more thing to keep track of and punish kids for not turning in..... i copied several last year and then didn't use them...maybe next year (so many things to keep on top of!)

missing I like to use "Notification of Possible Zero" pages to track the incomplete homework assignments. The title is quite striking, so the students take notice. It is set up simply with name, date, assignment and reason, with a place for student signature, teacher signature, and parent signature. I only send them home to be signed by a parent if it is a third-time offence. The students have to fill one out if they have not brought homework in when assigned. Also, they are copied onto really bright paper, so the page really sticks out in a pile of white papers, and they are easy to retrieve from the pile when I am marking. A letter is sent home at the beginning of the year, outlining the policy, and the parents need to sign a slip and send it back stating that they understand the policy (they can't say they didn't know it was that important!). It has worked with most of the grade 6 and grade 7 classes I've taught over the last 6 years or so. Hope this helps.

Homework Howler For those of you familiar with Harry Potter, I am going to be using "Homework Howlers" this year. A Howler is a note that actually reprimands out loud for doing something wrong...on the movie of course. It's actually a piece of paper that moves like a mouth.... I'll make these with similar info as you had and if my students get 3 of these in one month, then a parent will be called.

What a cute name!

This simple system designed to help teachers track missing assignments works for classrooms grades 4-12. Two editable printable forms and a record sheet make for a system that will easily fit your needs.

+ A  half page version  of the Homework Slip + A  quarter page version  of the Homework Slip

+  Record Sheet  for tracking Missing Work

+ Both Versions in an Editable Microsoft Word File

+ Both Versions in an Editable PowerPoint File

Version One   Includes:

Sized: Half Page

Date, Name, Class Period, Name of Assignment, 6 checkboxes to choose from, with space for an explanation.

Checkboxes:

I did the assigned homework, but did not bring it to class.

I chose not to do my homework.

I forgot to do my homework.

I did not have the materials I needed at home.

I lost my homework.

Other: ______

Version Two  Includes:

Sized: Quarter Page

Name, assignment, due date, with space for reason it is not being turned in, and student signature.

Includes a statement about grading policy and late grade.

HOW IT WORKS:

+ If a student doesn’t have their completed work for ANY reason, they are required to fill out and submit the homework slip instead.

+ The Homework Slip is a way for students to give their explanation without embarrassment. It is also a reminder to the student of their responsibility. When collecting homework, I can take a quick peak at the slip, and if needed, I can have a private chat with the student later.

+ When grading, I will keep all the Homework Slips in a stack next to the graded assignments. I enter the grades in the grade-book as usual. Then I pick up the stack of Homework Slips. In the comments section of the student’s grade, I will quote the student’s reason for not turning in their assignment.

+ If your grade-book does not allow for adding this information, use the provided record sheet to track the information.

ADDED BENEFITS

+ When conferencing with students and parents, use a printed grade report that shows the comments. Reference the student explanations when questioned about why the student is not turning it their work. Using quotes from the student puts the focus and responsibility on the student and not the teacher.

“I LOVE this solution to late homework. I will continue to use this. It puts the accountability on the students and helps me keep track of late and missing assignments.”

How will you prove that the drafts are original and unique?

What if i’m unsatisfied with an essay your paper service delivers, how much does an essay cost.

Starting your search for an agency, you need to carefully study the services of each option. There are a lot of specialists in this area, so prices vary in a wide range. But you need to remember that the quality of work directly depends on the cost. Decide immediately what is more important to you - financial savings or the result.

Companies always indicate how much 1000 characters of text costs, so that the client understands what price to expect and whether it is worth continuing to cooperate.

At Essayswriting, it all depends on the timeline you put in it. Professional authors can write an essay in 3 hours, if there is a certain volume, but it must be borne in mind that with such a service the price will be the highest. The cheapest estimate is the work that needs to be done in 14 days. Then 275 words will cost you $ 10, while 3 hours will cost you $ 50. Please, take into consideration that VAT tax is totally included in the mentioned prices. The tax will be charged only from EU customers.

When choosing an agency, try to pay more attention to the level of professionalism, and then evaluate the high cost of work.
