Mark your goal

Before starting your project, you should consider the following basic aspects.

Do I have or can I have competition in the near future? Can I do synergy? Can I take advantage of the competition?

Is the local market big enough for my project? Number of residents?

What is my target audience?

What do I want my project to represent?

Should I just offer padel? Do I want to combine padel with a restaurant or with other sports, such as gym, fitness or other sports activities that can create synergy / mutual benefit effects? How can I have income from all areas of my company? Will I have them?

Choose the right place

There are many details to consider when choosing a location. Here are some:

What is the maximum rental price that I can pay? How much money do I need to save to start?

How much is the rent? Can the business pay all the expenses and still be profitable? Even if the rental prices of the padel courts decrease due to greater competition?

Is a significant expense required for reconstruction works to make the facilities suitable for my project?

Is there electricity, drinking water and sewage systems in the building / plot? How does this influence in relation to where I would like to install the bathrooms and showers? How is the existing concrete base? A minimum of 15 cm thick is recommended. Roughness of the base? A slight roughness is recommended. Does it have slope? Maximum 1% slope

How much free height should the tracks have? At least 6 meters, preferably 8 meters or more.

How do I distribute the premises? How do I orient the courts to be regulatory and not have dead areas? Where do I put the rest areas? Cafeteria? Meeting room?

How many padel courts do I want and how many can I have? The cost of management and maintenance of 2 or 6 courts is similar, however, the more padel courts the more incomes.

Will my clients find me easily? Is there good parking? Public transport? Bike lane?

The operations may require different authorities. Here is a list of some conditions you should review:

Some municipalities require permits for the environment and health, based on self-control and other measures to maintain good hygiene and protection of the environment (ventilation, air conditioning, lighting, cleaning, treatment of generated waste, etc.).

Consider the legal spaces and distances so that your center complies with the accessibility, safety and evacuation regulations in case of emergency. This will also be important for the design and use of space. Your architect or engineer will be able to advise you on the existing regulations.

According to the urban qualification of the building and depending on each municipality, may or may not perform the installation. Check with the owner first and second, with the city planning office or city hall. Finally, you must hire an engineer or architect to write a project that complies with all legal regulations so you can receive your opening license without problem.

When a padel court has no roof, normally the local authority does not count it as a building, but as a removable installation, in this case it will be sufficient to pay local taxes. However, some municipalities claim that the metallic structure and glass are considered construction, requiring the project of an architect or engineer. It is also an important aspect if you are going to carry out commercial or business activities. All this depends on the municipality and you should inform yourself at your town hall.

Economic essential aspects

The economy is always a fundamental factor. It is important to have the correct expenses in order to be competitive, also to stand firm in the situation of greater competition and decrease in rental prices for padel courts. Here are some economic factors to consider: 

As in all companies, financial control is the path to success. Make sure you make appropriate budgets (annual budget, income and expense accounts, monthly cash flow, amortization terms for equipment, etc.) and do not forget the importance of following this continuously. Use appropriate tools, create simple and efficient procedures for their control.

Find out about the useful life of all equipment and installations. Calculate a repayment term and include the proportional part for its renewal in the annual budget, so that when the time comes, you can afford the expense without problem.

Normally all equipment and installations must be maintained for proper operation. You should keep in mind what jobs you can do yourself and what jobs you should hire a professional. With a small maintenance, your investments will last much longer in good condition and your customers will be more satisfied.

The initial investment consists of the purchase of the padel courts, the electrical installation (we always recommend hiring a qualified electrician), installation of water, remodeling the building (unless the owner can offer help with this) and furniture (changing rooms, cafeteria, shop, rest room, meeting room, benches, cupboards, TV screens, possible music equipment, etc.). It is also necessary to consider the project expenses, licenses, municipal taxes and the opening license.

Electricity is the second largest monthly operating expense, but it is quite easy to calculate, since it is a variable expense based on income. For example, a padel court that has 8 LED projectors of 150W, consumes 1.2 Kw per hour, knowing the price of Kwh that has hired, you can make the calculation and increase this price to rent to padel courts.

Most padel clubs, nowadays, operate through “self-service”, leaving space to control this expense. Staff can be increased depending on the increase in demand for padel courts or services offered. You can also hire a private professional coach to cover the peak hours.

As the rent or mortgage will be the most expensive operating expense, this affects the business to a large extent. You must also add the fixed costs of air conditioning of the room / water / electricity / gas / local taxes / insurance / etc.

Choice the correct padel court

In this topic, in JUBO PADEL we are experts … choosing the best padel court will guarantee a greater influx of players and a longer duration of the investment, in the same conditions as your competition with other courts. Keep in mind:

Consult your supplier about the applicable warranty conditions. Normally, these are different guarantees depending on what parts of the court are involved. The guarantee in construction is usually 3 years and up. The guarantee on glass generally does not exist, since it depends on “external circumstances”. The guarantee on the turf also varies according to the quality of this, as well as for the lighting.

Consult your supplier to obtain a maintenance manual for the courts you buy. Also make sure you have someone who can carry out the regular maintenance of the courts and if the provider can help you with this.

Make sure your supplier delivers extra material from each component to facilitate future maintenance of the padel courts. For example, extra sand, glue, screws, plugs, LED floodlights, glass, etc.

The installation of the courts must be done by professionals, because many construction auctions require experience and knowledge of the assembly. Although installing a metallic structure may seem simple, it must be calibrated perfectly correcting the millimeter unevenness of the floor so that there is no problem with the installation of the glass and the end of the turf below the structure. If you are thinking of saving some money and want to install the court yourself, JUBO PADEL can send a smaller team to help you. The installation time for a good quality court is approximately three days and three people. Additional time may be required if many accessories must be installed.

99% of the world’s padel courts come from Spain. The transport can be by truck or by container (maritime transport). Check with the supplier so that transportation is included in the price. Make sure that the supplier protects the material so that it arrives in perfect conditions.

A wide variety of accessories are available to customize the padel courts according to the wishes and requirements of the client. Examples of accessories are the different types of scoreboards, benches, protections for the entrances and net posts, sliding doors, extra zinc primer (previous to painting), custom corners with laser cutting, use only large glasses (WPT system), lighting columns with different shapes, etc. More information about  JUBO PADEL accessories here .

It is important an illumination that provides a comfortable light (the color or perfect temperature should be around 5.000 Kelvin) and good (the minimum requirement ranges between 200 and 750 lux on average). Cutting edge LED floodlights provide 130 lumens per watt (compared to normal LED that provide 100 lumens) and, therefore, better light. This achieves greater lighting with lower consumption, in addition to doubling the life of the floodlight. It is also important that the light does not blink, which makes it easier to see the ball. Consider energy efficiency to keep electricity costs low and to be more respectful of the environment. Installing the lighting directly on the ceiling (instead of using lighting columns) is an option that has its advantages.

It is available in 10 mm or 12 mm thickness. In 10 mm it is more common for VISION and FORTE models. The PANORAMIC court do not have pillars behind the glass and 12 mm glass is used to obtain the appropriate stability. It is important to verify that the glass complies with EU standard EN12150. The glass must be “tempered glass”, which means that it is heat treated for hardening and greater safety. If it broke, it would in millimeter pieces with less risk of injury.

In general, there are two types of turf, monofilament and fibrillated. The best is always monofilament, for its greater resistance, greater game comfort and less maintenance. Regarding the monofilament turf, there are two types of fibre: upright and textured. Depending on the price, appearance and function, you can choose between different models, according to your needs. You can read here more about the  JUBO PADEL courts models . Choose the right model for your sports center, according to the right conditions. The PANORAMIC court is more expensive and slightly more fragile, but it gives an open and spectacular impression. The VISION court (standard court) is the most stable and versatile, also suitable for all players, easy to transport and install. The FORTE court is the classic model, the most robust, extreme weatherproof. All are prepared to be installed outdoors, even with the possibility of incorporating protections and extra reinforcements (although the standard courts are all the highest quality and work excellently).

Important things to think about

Starting and executing activities with padel is quite new (not in Spain or Argentina), but as the padel continues growing, it also continues to accumulate experience, creating development and learning, including JUBO PADEL that manufactures and installs padel courts since the year 1998 with more than 1500 courts made. Here we have gathered some tips and suggestions:

If you do not have space for another padel court of standard dimensions (which has exterior dimensions of 20.8×10.8m), then you may be able to place a padel singles (with the outer dimensions of 20.8×6.8m). Excellent as a technical court, appreciated among friends and couples, because sometimes it is difficult to gather 4 people, good for training from small children to seniors, so that they become familiar with the ball, racket, net and walls.

Schools are an interesting target group to create visits and income during the day. One way to get a more efficient use of a padel court is to install an adjustable net that can be used for both padel and volleyball (volleyball is a popular school activity and can be played well on a padel court). Think of offering other sports to expand your service portfolio. In the mornings, offer services or special prices for retirees, for companies or for groups of friends.

Remember that you must install the buried tubes for electrical cables until to the lighting columns of the padel courts (you can also install the light on the ceiling, if it is covered, avoiding vibration in the floodlights by receiving hits during the game).

Remember to always use a qualified electrician to do and be responsible for all electrical installations. Saving money here can be very expensive in the medium or long term.

It is important to think and plan how to bring the courts to the installation place. An opening / door of at least 3.5 x 3.5m is required (better if the truck can arrive directly to the installation place). Once the courts are unloaded at your installation site, you can reduce the size of the entrance, although you should always think about future maintenance or replacements. Most suppliers require that you receive the material by yourself, for which a truck crane and 4 people are required. In any case, you should consult with your provider about everything you need. How to run a successful padel club

That noise you can hear is the stampede of newcomers to the padel industry seeking to board the gravy train by building a club in a leafy location near you. Some will be successful, but lack of experience may see others make fatal errors.

Michael Gradon, CEO of Game4Padel , admits his company has made a few mistakes over the last five and half years – but has learned from them.

Game4Padel’s model is to build and run padel facilities. They have over 30 open or secured venues globally and have a ‘playbook’ for every step of the process between searching for a venue to post-opening.

Although he won’t, of course, reveal all of Game4Padel’s secrets, Gradon has outlined to The Padel Paper what they believe are the essential steps to making a padel club successful.

He says: “Many entrepreneurs who are entering the market have fallen in love with padel and recognised the opportunity to leverage this growing sport. I wish them luck, because I’ve experienced first-hand it is a lot more difficult than the average person thinks.

“Success depends on a huge number of factors. But even though there is no ‘one size fits all’ solution, there are certain principles we abide by when assessing the viability of a new location.” 

Michael’s step-by-step guide to creating and running a successful padel business includes:

1. Location, location, location. If you want to make money, you have to be where there are a significant number of chimney pots. The biggest misconception I hear is, ‘Build it and they will come.’ Even though the awareness of padel is growing hugely, I think that’s a massive myth. People still need to see padel and you need to find creative ways to get people to try it. Unless you’ve got the budget for expensive marketing, the prominence of its location, in terms of population and visibility, matters.

2. As a business, we’ve focused on venues with a big indigenous footfall (for example, sports facilities with an active player base and thriving social scene, high-traffic shopping centres and business parks).  

Our recent deal with GLL was attractive for us because a lot of their sites have a large footfall. Some of their leisure centres, such as Gosling Sports Park in Welwyn Garden City, have one million visitors annually. That gives us a huge base of people to promote padel to.

3. Do your research. I know some Scandinavian companies who’ve tried to transfer their model to the UK, but have been shocked to find the relatively cheap warehouses and available land they’re used to do not exist here. Paying very high fixed rents for a large facility with 10-30 courts – and then not filling them – is a fast route to bankruptcy.  

We’ve always been relatively risk-averse and I’m conscious that our 90 shareholders want us to grow profitably and sensibly, matching supply and demand. So even if an existing venue is passionate about us building 10 or 12 courts, we say, ‘Let’s build four, and if they’re full in a few months, we’ll build another four, then another four.’ We don’t want to grow too quickly and have courts sitting empty. It’s not a good look. You want people to feel like they have to book quickly otherwise they won’t get a court.  

4. The planning process remains the bane of our lives. Canopy courts carry a risk of complaints based on visual impact while outdoor courts can raise noise concerns. Indoor venues only need a change-of-use application, but come with high fixed rents, which is risky. Local authorities sometimes come up with reasons to object which seem hard to understand and little weight seems to be given to padel’s health and community benefits. It can be an incredibly time-consuming process. Our fastest ever planning consent was eight weeks and our slowest is still ongoing after two years.

5. Marketing and promotion. This makes up a large part of the art of making a venue successful within the location and venue you’ve chosen. I certainly wouldn’t say we’re perfect at it, but we’ve spent more than five years learning what works and what doesn’t. We have a fantastic PR team. I cannot underestimate how important that is when promoting something that most people still haven’t heard of.

One crucial point of difference for us is having celebrity investors. Being able to say, “Andy Murray’s padel company is coming to [insert name of town]” is a massive help in getting local media coverage. Whilst we go through the planning permission process, we often look at putting up a pop-up padel court to build a padel community in advance. This worked recently in Ipswich where we got ITV Anglia, local radio and the local newspaper along for a hit. We now have planning consent for four covered courts in the town.

When we signed our deal with Westfield Shopping Centre, we were interviewed live on Sky News, had a great piece in The Times and it was the lead item in almost all property publications. In Brighton, our uncovered pop-up court has been booked every single available hour (14 hours a day) and we’ve got planning consent for four permanent covered courts there.

What material is a padel court made of.

The frame of a padel court is usually made of either steel or aluminum. Courts designed for outdoor use may have a slightly thicker frame profile to withstand weather and temperature variations. The frame must be primed and galvanized before it is painted. The guarantees vary by manufacturer, but the general rule is that steel structures are guaranteed for 5 years and aluminum for 15 years.

Glass walls

A padel court is usually constructed with glass panes all around, and each pane can weigh over 100 kilos, so you must fit the panes correctly to prevent accidents. It is generally recommended to use a tempered glass of at least 10 mm for indoor courts and 12 mm for outdoor courts due to greater stresses. Glass sections typically measure 3.20 x 2.40 m.

There are steel mesh sections adjacent to the glass sections on the sides. The mesh is exposed to ball contact as well as to certain players who run into it. Having a real and sustainable mesh is crucial to ensuring the quality of the game and reducing the risk of injury.

Artificial grass

There are several different colors and designs available of artificial grass used on padel courts. Padel has seen in recent years, especially in Italy, a dizzying development both in popularity and in the evolution of the business that has been generated around this sport, but also in the governance of the sport itself. • The padel market, especially in Italy, has seen a real boom in recent years, also thanks to the conditions generated by the pandemic; what is the state of the market right now?

In the beginning, the first ones to open padel clubs were tennis clubs, followed by entrepreneurs who invested in the creation of padel-only clubs; in the initial phase there was a lot of demand and little supply and those who took advantage of the market at that time made a fortune.

But now, in some Italian regions, padel has reached a point of saturation in relation to the existing demand and those who did not rely on expert consultants will pay the price.

Mind you, the demand is estimated to be growing given the high number of people who still have not approached it despite the surge in recent years, also due to the pandemic. If we look at the numerical data, in fact, in Italy are still missing about 10,000 padel fields to have a ratio fields / population similar to Spain.

Isla Padel n’est pas simplement un club de sport, mais un lieu de vie dédié à la convivialité, au divertissement et à la compétition.

Le club Isla Padel à Beau-Plan est un des clubs à faire la promotion du padel à Maurice. Situé à Mon-Rocher, près de la Mahogany Shopping Promenade et d’Ennoia Boutique Gym, ce club propose une série d’activités, ce mois-ci, visant à diversifier son offre et à attirer un public varié.

Le 18 avril, le club organisera, à nouveau, son événement Pad’Elles , une initiative exclusivement féminine. Cette animation vise à encourager les femmes à participer au padel, généralement perçu un sport d’hommes. Pad’Elles offrira un espace de détente et de camaraderie, permettant aux participantes de tisser des liens et de profiter d’une journée entre amies.

Du 22 au 26 avril, Isla Padel proposera un stage d’initiation et de perfectionnement sur quatre jours, spécialement conçu pour les enfants de 11 à 14 ans. Encadrés par le coach Kunal Sewnauth, les enfants auront l’opportunité de découvrir les subtilités de ce sport dynamique, tout en développant leurs compétences techniques et tactiques. Depuis ses débuts, sous la direction de Fabrice Péroux, fondateur et directeur général d’Ennoia, le club s’est engagé à populariser le tennis d’abord puis le padel à Maurice. L’objectif d’Isla Padel est de devenir un lieu de référence pour les compétitions internationales. À cet égard, ce club a déjà organisé des événements et des tournois, mettant en lumière ses installations conformes aux normes internationales.

Outre sa dimension compétitive, le padel offre plusieurs avantages pour la santé physique, mentale et sociale. En sollicitant l’ensemble du corps, il contribue à améliorer l’endurance, la force musculaire, l’agilité et la flexibilité des joueurs, faisant d’Isla Padel un lieu prisé des amateurs de sport et de bien-être.
