Doctoral progammes

A doctoral programme usually results in the title Doctor of Natural Sciences  (Dr. rer. nat.). Alternatively, you can choose to graduate as a Doctor of Social Sciences (Dr. rer. soc.) or a Doctor of Philosophy (Dr. phil.). Instead of doing an individual programme, you can also obtain a doctoral degree at the Graduate School of Decision Sciences or via the doctoral programme Clinical Psychology, Neuropsychology and Psychotherapy.

Individual programme

Individual doctoral programme  means that you work independently on an agreed topic, without a structured programme (e.g., a graduate school) but in cooperation with your supervisor.

It is up to you to find a supervisor and obtain approval as a doctoral candidate at the Department of Psychology. Depending on the funding, your position as a doctoral researcher may include a certain teaching load, departmental or project-related duties, or participation in the university's self-administration.

The admission requirements usually ask for a "good" overall grade in the subject-specific final exam of your master's degree.

The fast track  offers excellent students the option to shorten their duration of study and start their doctoral programme without first obtaining a master's degree.

The requirement for graduates of a 4-year bachelor's programme at a university or a university of teacher education is a subject-specific degree with a final grade of 1.2 or better. The grade of the bachelor's thesis must be 1.0. Equivalent grades are required for international degrees.

Doctoral programme Clinical Psychology, Neuropsychology and Psychotherapy

The doctoral programme Clinical Psychology, Neuropsychology and Psychotherapy  is an 8-semester programme. This includes a 1-year master's programme in the first 2 semesters as well as the time to write up your doctoral thesis and complete the oral doctoral exams.

The Scope and content of the programme are designed in a way that permits the approbation as a psychological psychotherapist after an additional year of practice (PT 1) – that is, after a total of 10 semesters. Our collaboration with the Bodenseeinstitut für Psychotherapie (bip) in particular enables this linking of doctoral programme and psychotherapy training.

  • Graduate School of Decision Sciences

The  Graduate School of Decision Sciences (GSDS) offers doctoral candidates an interdisciplinary environment for training and research on topics of decision making and their application to important issues of society.

The graduate school is structured into four interdisciplinary research areas with various cross-connections:

(A) Behavioural Decision Making (B) Intertemporal Choice and Markets (C) Political Decisions and Institutions (D) Information Processing and Statistical Analysis

Please find further information on programme contents and admission requirements on the GSDS website .

For further information on admission, please refer to the general and subject-specific provisions of the doctoral regulations.

Application Requirements

When you apply to a Master’s program in Psychology in Germany, universities will usually expect you to have an academic degree in a related discipline. Since a course in Psychology may focus on different aspects of social sciences, natural sciences, and the humanities, different degrees are accepted by different programs. For some courses, relevant fields may be natural sciences, Mathematics, Informatics, Neuroscience, Biology or Medicine, and for others these may be Philosophy or Linguistics. A first degree in Psychology should get you into most programs, however some programs may require students to have a certain amount of classes in Statistics or Clinical Research. Usually, application tests or interviews are not part of the admission process, students must simply submit required documents. In addition to standard certificates (e.g. first degree certificate, a transcript of records, a language certificate), a CV and a letter of motivation are typically required.

Find your PhD position in Germany

Before you start your search ....

Before you start your search you should know that there are different PhD models:

  • Individual doctorate  or
  • Structured PhD programmes

What's the difference? Check out our  overview of the various ways to do your PhD in Germany

Find your individual doctorate

Two young researchers are sitting on a lab desk listening to a standing professor and taking notes. The professor holds a molecular model in his hands.

The "traditional" or "individual" path to a PhD remains the most common in Germany. An individual doctorate involves a thesis or dissertation that is produced under the  supervision of one professor . This form of PhD study offers a great deal of  flexibility , but demands a high degree of  personal initiative  and responsibility.

How to find your PhD supervisor

In Germany there is no central admissions or selection office for doctoral students. Therefore, your first step is to find a suitable professor who is willing to be your supervisor.

One way to find a supervisor is to look for a university institute that matches your area of research. The following online search engines might help you find a suitable supervisor:

  • GERiT – German research institutions GERiT is a website containing information on approximately 29,000 research institutions in Germany. GERiT allows the user to search easily by location or subject. It provides all the information needed to choose an institution at which to research, study or do a doctorate. www.gerit.org
  • Finding a PhD position PhDGermany publishes PhD openings in Germany that specifically target international applicants. Accordingly, in most cases the working language is English. Fluent knowledge of German is only required for certain special positions. PhDGermany helps you find the right PhD opening or supervisor for your doctoral thesis and assists you with the online application process. www.phdgermany.de
  • Higher Education Compass   This database provides up-to-date information from universities about doctoral opportunities in Germany. The search engine enables you to carry out targeted searches on the basis of departments, admission requirements and form of doctoral thesis. www.higher-education-compass.de

Furthermore,  your contacts with your professors or previous university  could help direct you to a suitable department or potential supervisor in Germany.

It is also helpful to attend  academic conferences  in your own subject area. There you will be able to exchange information and make contacts – and perhaps even find a future PhD supervisor.

Find your structured PhD programme

Students are sitting in a modern study hall on red chairs at grey desks.

DAAD/Ausserhofer/Himsel

Structured PhD programmes in Germany are frequently very similar to the PhD programmes in English-speaking countries, in which a  team of supervisors  look after a  group of doctoral students . Around 12,000 doctoral students from abroad – roughly one in four – do their PhDs in structured programmes. As a rule, it is possible to complete a doctorate in four to five years.

Where to find your PhD programme

There is no central database of all structured PhD programmes in Germany. You can usually find these programmes directly through the respective universities, graduate schools or non-university research institutions. The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) database is also a good place to look. Here you will find a large number of PhD programmes that are specially aimed at international doctoral students.

International doctoral programme database

Are you interested in an international doctoral programme in Germany? This DAAD database presents a selection of roughly 230 international doctoral programmes in Germany. The database can be searched according to different criteria.  www.daad.de/international-programmes

Doctoral programmes at universities

Many universities offer structured doctoral programmes, which they publicise on their websites. The Student Advisory Service or Graduate Centre at the respective university will also provide help here. You can find the relevant addresses using the Higher Education Compass provided by the German Rectors’ Conference. www.higher-education-compass.de

DFG-funded research training groups

Research training groups are also funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Foundation, DFG) for a period of up to nine years. Their key emphasis is on the qualification of doctoral researchers within the framework of a focused research programme and a structured training strategy. www.dfg.de > Current Research Training Groups

Helmholtz Research Schools, Colleges and Graduate Schools

The Helmholtz Association is Germany’s largest scientific organisation. In collaboration with various institutions of higher education, Helmholtz Association research centres have established structured PhD programmes under the auspices of Helmholtz Graduate Schools, Helmholtz Research Schools and Colleges.  www.helmholtz.de > PhD Candidates

Leibniz Graduate Schools

The Leibniz Association connects 97 research institutes that conduct problem-oriented research and provide scientific infrastructure of national and international importance. Together with universities they run structured PhD programmes in Leibniz Graduate Schools. www.leibniz-association.eu > Leibniz Graduate Schools

International Max Planck Research Schools

The Max Planck Society specialises in innovative basic research and its institutes are able to offer up-and-coming researchers excellent infrastructure and support. The website lists the programmes available at International Max Planck Research Schools (IMPRS):  www.mpg.de > International Max Planck Research Schools

Max Planck Schools

In Germany, the best researchers in a specific field are often work at different universities and non-university research institutions spread throughout the country. The Max Planck Schools serve as hubs which gather this distributed knowledge. Here, the brightest minds in their fields have come together from within the scientific community to interconnect in faculties made up of active researchers. Students gain access to these unique networks, learn in close personal exchange from leaders in their fields and their peers, and enjoy access to outstanding infrastructure. Currently, three Schools are operating in the fields of Cognition, Matter to Life, and Photonics. www.maxplanckschools.de

Where can I find out about requirements?

Application procedures  differ from programme to programme . The precise requirements and deadlines can be found on the website of the respective university, research training group or graduate school. You should therefore first choose a PhD programme and/or graduate school.

You've found the position you want to apply for, but how does applying to a potential supervisor or structured PhD programme work in Germany? Find out more here.

Faculty of Behavioural and Cultural Studies Psychology

Students of psychology learn about human experiences and behaviour. Based on empirical research, students attempt to describe, understand and predict human behaviour in all areas of life as well as implications for psychological interventions.

Over the course of the academic programme, students should acquire knowledge, skills and experiences that will qualify them to work as psychologists. This career includes diagnostic, consulting, evaluating and intervening tasks in the social and health service sector, in education and further training, in administration, business and industry, as well as in psychological research and teaching. Students in an academic programme in psychology can expect to gain insights into various areas of psychology, which also lay the foundation for subsequent specialisation (in the Master’s programme).

Special Features and Characteristics

The aim of teaching at the Psychological Institute is to represent psychology in its thematic variety so that students can gain an overview of the subject and make a competent and informed decision for a later specialisation. The Psychological Institute also attaches great importance to ensuring that beginning students are properly welcomed to the department. To this end, the institute organises a week-long introductory compact seminar in which students are provided with the opportunity to get to know the academic programme, the institute, the working groups and their new peers in order to become best prepared to start their studies.

  • Institute of Psychology

An important overarching research interest in psychology at Heidelberg University is currently the analysis of (self-) regulation processes. Numerous questions are investigated from the various areas of psychology: What exactly is the ability to self-regulate and how does it develop in a lifetime? Are there inter-individual and cultural differences? Which are the underlying brain processes of self-regulation processes? Which internal and external factors that influence self-regulation exist? What is the connection between self-regulating abilities and decision making and problem solving processes? What roles does self-regulation play for successful educational and professional trajectories and a healthy life? What are the effects of impaired self-regulation processes?

Furthermore, theoretical and empirical research at the Psychological Institute is characterised by:

  • complex problem-solving
  • developing tasks for PISA
  • learning and cognition in early childhood
  • development of human thinking in the context of brain maturation
  • differential psychology of emotions, motivation and attentiveness
  • gender and health psychology
  • judging and making decisions in ecological contexts
  • rationality and meta-cognition
  • social influence on sustainable behaviour
  • stress and health management
  • innovation and change in the world of employment
  • clinical emotion research
  • care and psychotherapy research
  • motivational and other conditions of learning and teaching
  • quality of teaching in higher education
  • psychology of ageing
  •  development of modern methods for statistical data modelling

  • Ph.D., Clinical Psychology, Northwestern University
  • M.S., Clinical Psychology, Northwestern University
  • B.A., Psychology, University of California, Berkeley

In addition to his academic appointment in Psychology, Charan Ranganath is an affiliated faculty with the UC Davis Center for Neuroscience, which seeks to understand the function of the human brain in health and in illness. He is also director of the Dynamic Memory Lab at UC Davis and is an affiliated faculty with the Center for Mind and Brain. His research involves the use of functional neuroimaging, electrophysiology and behavioral methods to study the neural basis of human memory and executive control. He previously served as editor for the Cognitive Neuroscience Section of the journal NeuroImage , and currently serves as an editor for the Journal of Neuroscience , which is the most influential academically edited journal in the field of neuroscience. Professor Ranganath has consulted for government and private funding agencies from several countries and has served on review panels for the National Institutes of Health and National Science Foundation.

Research Focus

Professor Ranganath's research concerns the neurocognitive structure of human memory and executive control. One set of studies currently underway concerns the relationship between short-term, or working memory, and long-term memory. Results from event-related fMRI studies conducted by Professor Ranganath suggest that overlapping regions of the prefrontal cortex and medial temporal lobes are active during both working memory and long-term memory tasks. This research suggests that a common neural system supports both of these types of memory. Currently, Professor Ranganath is investigating how different regions within the prefrontal cortex and medial temporal lobes contribute to working and long-term memory through additional fMRI studies of healthy young adults and behavioral testing of patients with focal brain damage. A second, related area of interest is the role of prefrontal cortex in the control and evaluation of information in memory. Finally, in collaboration with Andy Yonelinas, Professor Ranganath is investigating the roles of different medial temporal lobe regions in recognition memory processes. To address this issue, he is conducting parallel studies using event-related fMRI and event-related brain potentials in healthy young and older adults and amnesic patients with medial temporal lobe damage. In collaboration with another research group, he is also conducting studies to examine field potentials recorded directly from the human hippocampal formation in patients performing recognition memory tasks.

The degree course is aimed at students and graduateswith a Bachelor's degree in Psychology who want to work as a psychotherapist. Admission requirements are a bachelor's degree that meets the requirements of the Reformed Psychotherapists Act and includes a completed psychotherapy profile area.

Since the winter semester 2021/22, PHB (Berlin Psychological University) has offered the new Master's degree course, which conforms to the requirements for licensing, MSc Psychology: Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy The degree course is designed in accordance with the requirements of the reform of the Psychotherapists Act and prepares students for the new licensing examination and a procedure-specific further training as a specialist psychotherapist. In small year groups and seminar groups, students at PHB receive close and personal support from professors and lecturers who are both first-class scientists and experienced psychotherapists in the clinical field and thus represent the Scientist Practitioners approach. Furthermore, diversity of procedures is one of the main priorities of PHB. Accordingly, the exchange with and between representatives of different psychotherapeutic directions is promoted. In the new clinical Master's degree course, students now have extra time and space to get to know the four scientifically recognised procedural directions, to orient themselves and thus to find out which direction suits them best. Finally, with the academic degree, students are optimally prepared for the newly designed licensing examination. Subsequently, a procedure-specific further qualification can be completed directly at the PHB in three procedure disciplines if desired.

When the PhD path leads to career struggles

A bird flew past a rainbow on the horizon, as viewed from Morrissey Boulevard in Dorchester.

A doctoral degree is a major commitment. Think carefully.

I appreciated reading Kara Miller’s The Big Idea column “PhD: Pretty heavily disappointed” (Business, May 22), about people with doctoral degrees struggling to build careers in academia. It made me think back to a conversation I had when I was about to graduate from high school.

I happened to run into a former track coach of mine, and as we were reminiscing he asked me what I planned as a major in college. “History,” I responded. He said, “Why don’t you take some computer classes also? It never hurts to be able to do something useful.”

I did not reflect on his motivation at the time, but my track coach was a young guy, and he was probably giving me advice straight from his own life, as a parent trying to raise his own young children. I did take computer classes in college and ultimately received a PhD in chemical engineering. I always remember that conversation as being a kind of turning point.

Earning a doctoral degree is a life commitment of great proportion. It can take, as Miller notes, between four and seven years. If we think of working life as roughly between the ages of 22 and 65, then a PhD requires more than 10 percent of a person’s working life. People need to think carefully about that investment.

Two powerful arguments in favor of the path of science, technology, engineering, and math are that there tend to be more STEM jobs for PhDs, and many universities’ STEM departments are generous in covering their PhD students’ tuition and cost of studies, including a stipend toward food, rent, and other expenses.

Stuart Gallant

Not much has changed in 30 years

As I prepared to graduate in 1995 with a doctor of education degree from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, my mother memorably said to me, “Of my four children, you are the one with the most education and the smallest salary.” Apparently not much has changed in 30 years.

I must congratulate these students, however, on following their passion rather than following the money. I can’t help but think that their lives, though stressful, may contain greater happiness.

Peggy Clark

Lawyers & electricians & philosophers, oh my!

Kara Miller’s column on the career challenges for people with doctoral degrees generated more than 260 comments on Boston.Globe.com. The following is an edited sample of readers’ reactions:

Lots of law school grads are underemployed as well. (PL)

So true, PL. The market in Massachusetts is flooded with talented lawyers seeking work. (Roforma)

Supply and demand, the market at work. (guk)

Investing in education and research in all fields is the hallmark of a society with staying power. Disinvesting from these endeavors signals decline and decay. (Massachusetts citizen)

Electricians, plumbers, mechanics, and other skilled technical professions have no problems getting $100k jobs with great benefits. (ramsen)

Not enough turnover from tenured professors, leaving little space for new faculty. Although the tenured, well-established professors are needed, it’s the junior faculty who are hungry and with new ideas that help build new programs. The whole graduate program model is a bad model. I worked two jobs, had my tuition and some type of minimal student health insurance and could barely cover the rent with my stipend, and the second job paid for everything else. Though I was working on many faculty projects, it was the faculty who said this would be good for me. Never did they say it was also good for them. (TravelerofNJ2)

I just retired from a tenured faculty position in science. I’m in my early 70s. I have colleagues who are still doing what they do well into their 70s, a couple approaching 80. There is no active incentive from the university to move the older faculty on, to make way for a new generation. (Lola-lola)

The next step is for adjuncts to go on strike across the nation and hold colleges and universities accountable. The current system is completely absurd. (Wordsmith2358)

Universities should be required to release disclosure data about the fate of their PhD graduates. (davidman820)

I knew an attorney who managed a Cheesecake Factory. She had worked in food services through school. As an attorney, she really did not make that much money and was not doing the field of law of her choice. How many real estate closings can you do without dying of boredom? She went into management in the food industry and makes the same salary. (Antietem)

It was always a question and puzzling to me why people study philosophy. (Blazer27)

  • Empowering and advocating for others around the world

GSE news brief artwork.

Published May 7, 2024

BY DANIELLE LEGARE

From school psychology student to successful entrepreneur, gse alumna empowers and advocates for others around the world.

University at Buffalo alumna Keba M. Rogers, BA ’00, MA ‘04, PhD ‘10, has recently made waves in the field of psychology and education with her successful business ventures, including her consultancy practice Keba S.P.E.A.K.S., LLC Established in 2021, Keba S.P.E.A.K.S. works with schools and organizations around the world, serving people through empowerment, activation, knowledge and support (S.P.E.A.K.S.).

How did she decide to start this venture? “This is what I've been doing my whole existence,” she said.

As CEO and founder, Rogers provides individuals with resources to accept and empower themselves, fostering a motivation to bring forth their genuine selves in both professional and everyday settings (activation). This process involves educational initiatives covering various aspects of self and the world, promoting awareness and understanding (knowledge). Additionally, it includes establishing foundational skills to assist individuals on their path toward success (support).

“I have this knack for providing dense intellectualized information in a simple, actionable way… And, I just said to myself, ‘I should offer consultation,’” she explained. “People always ask me, ‘Hey, can you come speak with our school? Hey, can you do this talk?’ And I was like, ‘That’s a lot of work’—It's not just the hour that I'm talking; it's all the research and preparation that I have to do. So I was inspired to formalize this and turn it into a business.

“In the last couple of years, I've been working consistently with a couple of organizations, both of which are international… I've been doing a lot of work, mostly around the connection between emotional intelligence and diversity, equity and inclusion. I've done a lot of work around that since George Floyd’s murder,” Rogers continued. “That has been a main point—helping people understand emotional intelligence or social and emotional skills, and then that connection with DEI as well as trauma.”

In addition to her consulting services, Rogers offers individual and group therapy, psychological assessments, and parent education through her private practice, Third Avenue Psychological Services, PLLC, established in 2019.

Originally from Mount Vernon, New York, Rogers credits her success in business and psychology partly to the experiences and education she received as a student at the Graduate School of Education.

After completing GSE’s master's program with an advanced certificate in school psychology , she worked as a school psychologist in the Syracuse area before returning to UB and earning her PhD in GSE’s combined doctoral program in counseling psychology and school psychology . She was awarded a Schomburg fellowship in both her master’s and doctoral programs—a testament to her dedication and potential.

Keba Rogers.

Keba Rogers, BA ’00, MA ‘04, PhD ‘10

As a GSE student, she actively participated in CSTEP (Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program) and the Cora P. Maloney Center, where her experiences as a graduate assistant were pivotal. “I was born and raised in Mount Vernon and the Bronx, but I feel like I grew up in Buffalo; I became an adult and found a nonbiological family. That is truly how I feel about the [Cora P. Maloney] family.” According to Rogers, that family included the late John M. Staley, former headmaster of Cora P. Maloney Center; Shanna Crump-Owens, director of CSTEP; Letitia Thomas, assistant dean for diversity in the UB School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and former director of the Cora P. Maloney Center; and Curtis Hamm, former public service and internship program coordinator in the Cora P. Maloney Center.

During her doctoral program, Rogers also found inspiration and guidance from mentors like former GSE Dean Mary Gresham, whom she describes as her "auntie away from home." Gresham's attentive listening and encouragement impacted Rogers, shaping her perspective and influencing her decisions. “She was pretty amazing. What stuck out for me most was that she listened. With many people, it didn't feel like they were listening to me. But she would listen and say things like, ‘Well, what do you think we should do?’ And I think that was the first time I was asked that,” Rogers recalled.

Another influential figure in her academic journey was the late LeAdelle Phelps, former GSE dean and professor, who was a mentor and advocate. With Phelps’ encouragement, Rogers recalls learning to critically assess and choose her battles as a student and professional, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing and adapting to different situations.

"I just think that UB was foundational in my growth and development as an adult and as a professional," Rogers said.

She remains connected to her alma mater today, giving back to the UB community in meaningful ways. She returns every year to speak about self-care and provide mentorship to current CSTEP students, embodying the spirit of community and support that she experienced during her academic journey.
