Introduction

General tips to keep students hooked to school homework, 15 innovative school homework ideas to engage your students, theme a: arts and crafts, theme b: physical and outside activities, theme c: digital activities, theme d: games, theme e: entrepreneurship.

“Hi teachers! I am your old friend, School Homework. Over time as education changed, so have I— thanks to the endless innovations that happened to me.  Let me take you through my life and the various innovations that made me your best friend- I was born in the 1920s to help students reinforce what they learned in class. Until the 1980s, I was basically just pen-and-paper-based assignments.  The Internet was born in 1983. From there onwards, I made my stride into the ‘digital era’.

Evolution of school homework

Until the beginning of 2020, I was slowly being integrated within online platforms and technology to help students learn better. Then at the onset of 2020, the world plunged into the COVID-19 pandemic. Schools shifted to a ‘remote learning’ mode of education. During this pandemic, you and I became very crucial in ensuring the continuity of our students’ learning. You all embraced creative approaches to keep the students engaged. You leveraged interactive games, virtual simulations, & more to make me engaging. Gone are the days when you, my dear teachers, would limit your homework to worksheets, textbook questions, literature reviews, and reports. Today as we stand here in 2023, there is no limit to innovative and exciting homework formats! Well, that’s from me. See you in the classrooms!”

Unlimited possibilities when school homework and innovation combine

So teachers, we heard from homework about how it has evolved over time. As it said, many innovative ways have come up to reinforce our students' learning. So, are you ready to make your students fall in love with these new school homework ideas? Let’s begin with understanding some general tips to keep your students engaged with their school homework.

1. Make it Relevant and Meaningful

Connect the school homework to their lives, interests, or current events to make it more meaningful and relatable. For example, if it’s Christmas time, you can ask your students to explore the themes of charity, storytelling, etc.

2. Give Them a Choice

Allow students to have some choice and autonomy in their assignments. Ask them to select the format (e.g. written format in the online medium, oral format in the offline medium) in which they want to submit their homework. When they feel a sense of ownership, they are more likely to be motivated and engaged. This is how you become a 21st-century teacher who uses differentiated learning.

3. Celebrate Their Achievements

When children get appreciated for their achievements or good behaviour, it boosts their self-confidence. It encourages them to repeat those actions. This creates a positive learning environment. They are more likely to deliver results when appreciated for their actions. Hence, you can celebrate their achievements via small rewards, recognition or a display of their work in class.

Let's move to the next part of this blog, where we will share innovative school homework ideas that will turn mundane homework into engaging learning sessions!  After assigning any of these innovative homework ideas, you might never hear students’ innovative excuses to avoid homework! How to effectively use technology to maximize homework outcomes

“Teachers’ Use of Technology for School and Homework Assignments: 2018–19 First Look” .  This report was generated in response to the enormous role technology is, and will increasingly be, playing in providing remote learning opportunities for students, whether in supporting part-time “school based” education or temporarily replacing it altogether.  The provides data on the access and availability of computers, smartphones, and the Internet to students at home, the impact that students’ access to technology outside of school has on teachers’ homework assignments, and ways that teachers provide assistance to their students who have limited access to technology and the Internet outside of school.  The following are some of the more important findings.

Teacher Awareness of Home Computer Availability and Use:   Teachers are on the front line of interfacing with students about their access to computers and the Internet at home.  Yet, they often have inexact information in this area.  Teachers reported that they get information by doing surveys of students or parents (51 percent), talking to students or parents individually (84 percent), and developing a sense while working with students.  Yet, among all teachers, a little over one in five reported being very knowledgeable and one in two reported being somewhat knowledgeable about their students’ access to computers and the Internet at home. School Support for Access to Computers and Internet:   Only twenty-six percent of teachers reported that their students have district- or school-provided computers for students to take home on a long-term basis during the school year. Thirty-six percent of teachers reported that the teachers estimated the percentage of their students who have access to a computer at home, including district- or school-provided computers for students who take them home. About two-thirds of teachers estimated that 75 percent or more of their students have access to a computer at home. While computers and Internet service might exist in students’ households, computer availability for homework and the reliability of computer connections to the Internet can vary considerably. About a third (35 percent) of teachers estimated that their students’ home computers were very available for school assignments. Twenty-nine percent of teachers thought it very likely that their students’ home computers had reliable Internet access.

Access to Technology and Homework Assignments:   About half of the teachers reported that their students’ access to technology and the Internet outside of school has a moderate (28 percent) or large (20 percent) influence on the homework they assign to them.  About a fifth (19 percent) of teachers reported that they often assign technology-based homework and an additional 28 percent reported doing so sometimes. The teachers who assign technology-based homework, at least rarely, were asked the extent that their students have difficulty completing this type of homework because they are not familiar with how to use technology.

Among the 98 percent of teachers whose students are given online or computerized assessments by the state, district, or school, 44 percent reported that their students were very prepared and 39 percent reported students to be somewhat prepared to use the technology required for these assessments.

The overall conclusions of this survey is that, while there have been successes along the way to integrating technology into education, there is a long way to go in terms of data systems, resources, accountability, and ongoing support to meet the new needs for remote learning.

Design and Technology Teaching Resources (Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4)

Our free key stage 3 and key stage 4 teaching resources for design and technology have been created to lead students through different processes with the help of real-life situations from the INEOS TEAM UK’s challenge for the America’s Cup, the Formula 1 of international sailing.

The purpose of design and technology programmes for students is to use their imagination and creativity to understand and make products that can solve real and relevant problems across many different contexts. Covering a broad range of topics and disciplines including science, mathematics, engineering and art, design and technology at key stage 3 and 4 will teach pupils how to be innovative, resourceful and capable citizens.

England’s national curriculum aims to ensure that pupils develop creative, technical and practical expertise to use in everyday life, as well as building up knowledge and understanding of skills in order to make prototypes and products for different uses. The subject also teaches pupils to be critical and to evaluate their ideas, as well as understanding the principles of nutrition and cooking.

Free worksheets, lesson ideas and other resources for teachers

STEM Crew offer multiple free teaching resources to make design and technology engaging for both students and teachers, with videos and worksheets that will challenge, encourage and teach pupils.

Our D&T Contextual Challenge has been produced to give students the opportunity to practice a contextual challenge task ahead of their GCSE NEA using the real-life example of the British America’s Cup Team. Covering three sections; Explore, Create and Evaluate, this resource explains the iterative design process before going through each section and starting again to refine designs to make them fit for purpose.

Another great resource is Materials and their uses , which covers the different objects and materials used in the construction of boats and why they are used. This is highly effective used in sequence with our other resources or as a quick learning activity.

Each resource provides a main video which will introduce the topics, the context and the challenge or learning. It will also include a number of worksheets for students to explore the different design and technology challenges these real-life experiences pose, encouraging them to explore, create and evaluate.

Explore all of our design and technology resources here.

If you would like to access these free resources, simply register and provide your organisation. You will then be able to login to watch the videos and download the worksheets for your class to use.

Creative Homework Ideas

How can you create homework assignments that build on the day’s lessons and encourage creative, student-led learning? It’s a challenge for most teachers, especially as motivating pupils to complete homework can add a whole extra layer to your lesson plans. But it’s essential to bridge the gap between teacher and student learning –  the skills gained through independent study reinforces knowledge from your class, as well as a host of other benefits:

  • Extended learning time – outside of the constraints of the school day, students are free to learn at their own pace and in their own environment.
  • Independent learning – vital skills for exam preparation and higher education
  • Teaches students to be resourceful and to overcome challenges independently.
  • Gives students the freedom to be creative in their learning, gain valuable problem-solving skills and confidence in their own abilities.

Tips For Setting Creative Homework

  • Plan independent learning both in and out of the classroom – you can monitor students effectiveness and address issues that may arise in the classroom before they become problematic for pupils at home.
  • Don’t leave homework assignment to the end of the lesson, rushing through the task might leave some students confused which inevitably leads to a lower homework completion rate. Write plenty of time for explaining homework assignments into your lesson planning – read our Beginner’s Guide To Lesson Planning here
  • Homework should to not too easy nor not too hard, offering pupils a challenge that reinforced the topics learnt during the day
  • Give room for creative expression – allowing students to add their own diagrams, decorations or chose their own project topics from a selection.
  • Try using peer or self-assessment to mark homework – a double whammy of reducing your workload and allowing pupils to take control of their own learning.
  • Include timings and explicit steps for completing more complicated assignments, especially for pupils that you anticipate might struggle. Comprehension of the task is the biggest hurdle in getting pupils to work on an independent basis.
  • Self-driven projects, posters, creative tasks and research are more exciting than standard comprehension tasks and might encourage pupils that find sitting and writing dull or hard to complete the homework set – give students the freedom to learn and be creative in their home study.
  • Provide specific instructions and internet safety reminders for research-led assignments. It’s very easy for children to find research overwhelming with a vast amount of information available online. Provide suggested websites and links in your homework to keep things on track!
  • Don’t introduce a new topic for homework – keep it to topics that you’ve already covered in class
  • Taking note of the subjects that excite and engage your class and set homework accordingly – try keeping dryer topics and  for the classroom so that you can monitor engagement
  • Mark work promptly – essential to keep students motivated to complete work in their own time!
  • Offering students the opportunity to select the homework that they would like to do from a selection guarantees a higher rate of completion. We’ve seen some teachers create grids or sheets of homework assignments for the pupils to select, or offer baskets of activities for younger children to take home and complete with an adult.

Creative Homework Ideas For All Ages

Coming up with innovative ways for students to reinforce their knowledge at home can be difficult – many of these ideas would be suitable for lots of subjects with a little tweaking!

Technology and Homework: Can We Teach Teens A Healthy Balance?

technology homework ideas

“But I’m using my phone to do my homework!”

If you’re the parent of a middle school or high school student, you’ve likely heard these words when you ask them to put away the phone and get their homework done.

technology homework ideas

As technology invades every corner of our kids’ lives, both at home and at school, it has become increasingly difficult to help them develop a healthy relationship with it and use it for good instead of Instagram. (Okay, so we all like a little Instagram now and then.)

The fact is, your kids probably do need technology to do their homework—at least some of the time.

The trick is to help teens recognize when technology is helping them study, and when it’s just derailing their productivity.

4 Ways to Help Teens Learn to Use Technology Wisely:

1. choose educational apps carefully..

Consider educational apps. The educational technology sector is booming with apps designed to help kids master new concepts. Looking for an app to help with algebra? There are hundreds. But that doesn’t mean they are all helpful to your child.

“There’s a lot of garbage out there, especially with people out to make a quick buck,” says Emily Levitt, Vice President of Education at Sylvan Learning. Sylvan’s teachers are trained to help engage students using interactive technology.

“For example, your child might have a project on photosynthesis,” Levitt says. “An app might hit on the buzzword you’re looking for, but not the content they need. Having reviewed hundreds of pieces of educational technology, our tutors can provide recommendations to parents that will actually support their child’s learning.”

Don’t exclusively use apps that just require students to memorize information and take quizzes, educators suggest. Look for apps that encourage students to analyze information, make judgments, or create something new with their knowledge.

[adrotate banner=”39″]

2. Put the phone away when doing homework.

When working on a project that involves internet research, students naturally gravitate toward their smartphones. However, if you have a student who struggles to stay on task, Levitt recommends putting the phone in another room during homework time.

“The phone is always beckoning with texting and social media,” says Levitt. “If possible, have the student use another computer or tablet for homework. Ideally, one that is not connected to the student’s personal apps.”

What about those dreaded group projects? Rather than texting back and forth, encourage students to use a collaborative platform like Google Docs. “This allows every student to contribute and see others’ changes in real time, and it can also allow a teacher to see the history of everyone’s participation,” says Levitt.

3. Create as much as you consume.

Parents should consider that what children are doing online is just as important as how much time they are spending doing it, says Dr. Troy Hicks, an associate professor at Central Michigan University who focuses on education and technology.

“Any ‘balance’—either in school or at home—would demand that students are creating at least as much of their own original content for academic and creative purposes as they are consuming what is available to them,” advises Hicks.

“Let’s put that in concrete terms. For every hour viewing YouTube or playing a video game, a student should spend another hour creating their own video or learning to code.”

4. Keep informed about what’s out there.

technology homework ideas

“Ask your children thoughtful questions about their personal and academic uses of technology,” recommends Hicks. “Rather than lecturing them about the negative effects of technology, engage in a dialogue with your children about their media use.” The goal is that they—and not parents—“will be much better able to make the critical decisions we would expect of them as they become responsible adults.”

close up of high schooler doing homework

Technology is here to stay, for work and for play. The goal is to help our kids be aware of its role in their teens’ lives so that it serves them well, rather than the other way around.

Question: How does student access work?

Answer: With your purchase you get one class account that all students use to access the lesson pages. Think of this website like a textbook but digital. The username and password’s purpose is to give students access to the textbook. Then from there you (the teacher) still facilitate student progress by letting them know which lesson page to go to and you’ll still collect their finished assignments for assessment.

Question: What platform will the students be using? Are they done in google drive? Like an interactive notebook?

Answer: All of the digital content is housed on my website. The lesson plans and rationale pages are for the teacher (and administrators, right?) as PowerPoint files, and the website is set up to just click and go for the students to complete the activities. Think of the PPT files like the teacher manual and the website like the student workbook (but digital). Visit it ahead of time at k5technologycurriculum.com to get an idea how it works. You can find several free pages on the Samples dropdown menu. If/when you purchase access, you will create a class username and password to access the grade level pages included for your purchase.

Question: Do these include Google Apps or MS Office?

Answer: Both! Starting in 1st grade there are lessons to teach excel/sheets, word/docs, and PPT/slides.

You can pick and choose which lessons to do with your students. If you have access to Google Apps but not to MS Office, just skip the MS Office lessons and vice versa.

Question: Can I attach the lessons to Google Classroom?

Answer:  Some teachers will choose to use Google Classroom as a way to collect student assignments in order to grade them, but students will still need to go to the website to complete the lesson.

Question: Do I need to buy anything additional software for my students to use this curriculum?

Answer: No! Everything you need is included. There are optional outside subscriptions for some activities. If you want to use the lessons for digital passport from common sense media (4th grade) then you will need to make a free teacher account. There are optional “early finisher” activities like Moby Max and discovery education that could be used if you have an account but there are tons of other options if you don’t.

Question: Do I have to buy all of the grade levels or can I just buy the one(s) I need?

Answer: Individual grade levels can be purchased and if you decide you need more, it is easy to add additional grade levels at any time. Scroll down to see the purchase options.

A search through the United States Patent and Trademark Office archives turns up loads of inventions that parents and children can appreciate this time of year. A walkie-talkie pen? How about a gumball-dispensing t-shirt for the first day? These 17 quirky products could ease the sometimes rocky transtion back to school.

From unveiling a futuristic AI assistant called "Project Astra" that can run on a phone – and maybe smart glasses, one day – to Gemini being infused into nearly every service or product the company offers, artificial intelligence was definitely the dominant theme.

The two-hour keynote was enough to melt the mind of all but the most ardent LLM enthusiast, so we've broken down the 7 most important things that Google announced during its main I/O 2024 keynote – and included the latest news on when we actually might see these new tools...

1. Google dropped Project Astra – an “AI agent” for everyday life

So it turns out that Google does have an answer to OpenAI’s GPT-4o and Microsoft ’s CoPilot. Project Astra , dubbed as an "AI agent" for everyday life, is essentially Google Lens on steroids and looks seriously impressive, able to understand, reason, and respond to live video and audio.

Demoed on a Pixel phone in a recorded video, the user was seen walking around an office, providing a live feed of the rear camera and asking Astra questions off the cuff. Gemini was viewing and understanding the visuals while also tackling the questions.

It speaks to the multi-modal and long-context in the backend of Gemini, which works in a jiffy to identify and deliver a response quickly. In the demonstration, it knew what a specific part of a speaker was and could even identify a neighborhood in London. It's also generative because it quickly created a band name for a cute pup next to a stuffed animal (see the video above).

It won’t be rolling out immediately, but developers and press like us at TechRadar will get to try it out at I/O 2024. And while Google didn’t clarify, there was a teaser of glasses for Astra, which might mean Google Glass could make a comeback.

Still, even as a demo during Google I/O, it's seriously impressive and potentially very compelling. It could supercharge smartphones and the current assistants we have from Google and even Apple . Furthermore, it also shows off Google's true AI ambitions, a tool that can be immensely helpful and no chore at all to use.

  • When will it launch? Unknown right now – Google describes it as "our vision for the future of AI assistants"

2. Google Photos got a helpful AI boost from Gemini

Google IO 2024

Ever wanted to quickly find a specific photo you captured at some point in the distant past? Maybe it's a note from a loved one, an early photo of a dog as a puppy, or even your license plate. Well, Google is making that wish a reality with a major update to Google Photos that fuses it with a Gemini. This gives it access to your library, lets it search it, and easily delivers the result you’re looking for.

In a demo on stage, Sundar Pichai revealed that you can ask it for your license plate, and Photos will deliver an image showing it and the digits/characters that make up your plate. Similarly, you can ask for photos of when your child learned to swim along with any more specifics. It should make even the most disorganized photo libraries a bit easier to search.

Google has dubbed this feature “Ask Photos,” and will roll it out to all users in the "coming weeks". And it will almost certainly come in handy, and make folks who don't use Google Photos a bit jealous.

  • When will it launch? " In the coming months" as an experimental feature, according to Google

3. Your kid’s homework just got a lot easier thanks to NotebookLM

A man presenting NotebookLM at Google I/O 2024

All parents will know the horror of trying to help kids with homework; if you ever knew about this stuff in the past, there’s no way the knowledge still lurks within your brain 20 years later. But Google may have just made the task a lot easier, thanks to an upgrade to its NotebookLM note-taking app.

NotebookLM now has access to Gemini 1.5 Pro, and based on the demo given at I/O 2024, it’ll now be a better teacher than you’ve ever been. The demo showed Google’s Josh Woodward loading up a notebook filled with notes about a learning topic – in this case, science. With a single button press, he was able to create a detailed learning guide, with further outputs including quizzes and FAQs, all pulled from the source material.

Impressive – but it was about to get a lot better. A new feature – still a prototype for now – was able to output all of the content as audio, essentially creating a podcast-style discussion. What’s more, the audio featured more than one speaker, chatting about the topic naturally in a way that would definitely be more helpful than a frustrated parent attempting to play the role of teacher.

Woodward was even able to interrupt and ask a question, in this case “give us a basketball example” – at which point the AI switched tack and came up with clever metaphors for the topic, but in an accessible context. The parents on the TechRadar team are itching to try out this one.

  • When will it launch? Unknown right now

4. You’ll soon be able to search Google with a video

Google IO 2024

In a strange on-stage demo with a record player, Google showed off a very impressive new search trick. You can now a record a video, and search it to get results, and hopefully an answer.

In this case, it was Googler who was wondering how to use a record player; she hit record to film the unit in question while asking something and then sent it off. Google worked its search magic and provided an answer in text, which could be read aloud. It's an entirely new way to search, like Google Lens for video, and also distinctly different from the forthcoming Project Astra everyday AI, as this needs to be recorded and then searched versus working in real-time.

Still, it’s part of a Gemini and generative AI infusion with Google Search, aiming to keep you on that page and make it easier to get answers. Before this demo of searching with video, Google showed off a new generative experience for recipes and dining. This allows you to search for something in natural language and get recipes or even eatery recommendations on the results page.

Simply, Google’s going full throttle with generative AI in search, both for results and various ways to get the results.

  • When will it launch? Google says that "searching with video will be available soon for Search Labs users in English in the US" and will "expand to more regions over time"

5. Google took on OpenAI’s Sora with its Veo video tool

We’ve been marveling at the creations of OpenAI ’s text-to-video tool  Sora  for the past few months, and now Google is joining the generative video party with its new tool called Veo . Like Sora, Veo can generate minute-long videos in 1080p quality, all from a simple prompt.

That prompt can include cinematic effects, like a request for a time-lapse or aerial shot, and the  early samples look impressive . You don’t have to start from scratch either – upload an input video with a command, and Veo can edit the clip to match your request. There’s also the option to add masks and tweak specific parts of a video too.

The bad news? Like Sora, Veo isn’t widely available yet. Google says it’ll be available to select creators through VideoFX, one of its experimental Labs features, “over the coming weeks.” It could be a while until we see a wide rollout, but Google has promised to bring the feature to YouTube Shorts and other apps. And that’ll have Adobe shifting uneasily in its AI-generated chair.

  • When will it launch? You can now join the Veo waitlist , with Google stating that it'll be "available to select creators in private preview in VideoFX". Google also says that "in the future, we’ll also bring some of Veo’s capabilities to YouTube Shorts" and other products

6. Android got a big Gemini infusion

Google IO 2024

Much like Google's "Circle to Search" feature lays on top of an application, Gemini is now being integrated into the core of Android to integrate with your flow. As demonstrated, Gemini can now view, read, and understand what is on your phone's screen, letting it anticipate questions about whatever you view.

So it can get the context of a video you're watching, anticipate a summarization request when viewing a lengthy PDF, or be ready for myriad questions about an app you're in. Having a content-aware AI baked into a phone's OS isn't a bad thing by any stretch and could prove super useful.

Alongside Gemini being integrated at the system level, Gemini Nano with Multimodality will launch later this year on Pixel devices. What will it enable? Well, it should speed things up, but the landmark feature, for now, is Gemini listening to calls and being able to alert you in real time if it's spam. That's pretty cool and builds upon call screening, a long-standing feature of Pixel phones. It's poised to be faster and process more on-device rather than sending it off to the cloud.

  • When will it launch? Google says that 'Gemini Nano with Multimodality' will be available "on Pixel later this year". Circle to Search improvements and the new bank scams feature for phone calls will also land "later this year"

7. Google Workspace will get a lot smarter

Google IO 2024

Workspace users are getting a treasure trove of Gemini integrations and useful features that could make a big impact daily. Within Mail, thanks to a new side panel on the left, you can ask Gemini to summarize all the recent conversations with a colleague. The result is then summarized with bullet points highlighting the most important aspects.

Gemini in Google Meet can give you the highlights of a meeting or what other folks on the call might be asking. You would no longer need to take notes during that call, which could prove helpful if it’s lengthy. Within Google Sheets, Gemini can help make sense of data and process requests like pulling a specific sum or data set.

The virtual teammate “Chip” may be the most futuristic example. It can live in a G-chat and be called up for various tasks or queries. While these tools will make their way into Workspace, likely through Labs first, the remaining question is when they will arrive for regular Gmail and Drive customers. Considering Google's approach of AI for all and pushing it so hard with search, it is likely a matter of time.

  • When will it launch? Gemini's side panel in Gmail, Docs, Drive, Slides and Sheets will be upgraded to Gemini 1.5 Pro "starting today" (May 14). For the Gmail app, the 'summarize emails' feature will be available to Workspace Labs users "this month" (May) and to Gemini for Workspace customers and Google One AI Premium subscribers "next month"
