Graduate unemployment in South Africa grows at an unprecedented rate each year. New graduates, many with Honours and Masters degrees, struggle to find jobs for reasons cited as their lack of foundational workplace skills. Internships support the transition of new graduates into the workplace and aid the development of foundational skills on which to build their careers.

South Africa’s transition to a green economy needs creative and innovative leaders to tackle the complex and interrelated socio-economic and ecological issues and risks facing us today. Across disciplines, graduates come from universities with new and novel ideas of how to respond to the increasing socio-ecological crises we are all caught up in. Law graduates are looking for new ways to ensure environmental rights are not violated. Urban Planners are looking for new ways to design cities for low carbon transport. Economists are trying to better value natural resources, and determine costs and impacts of environmental neglect. These graduates need both the workplace and opportunity to explore some of these new ideas in a real work environment, while at the same time building the foundations of their future careers and increasing their employability.

WWF’s Graduate Internships provide a practical and paid bridging experience for new graduates to gain valuable experience and workplace-based training, and connect into professional networks to establish their careers for the environment.

Every two years, WWF recruits a new cohort of Honours and Masters graduates into a structured and mentored 12-18 month internship programme. In addressing skills in high demand, internship positions range from traditional green occupations, like the Park Ranger and Ecologist to emerging areas of specialisation such as the Environmental Economist, Environmental Engineer and the green Architect. Applicants are selected for their specialism, coupled with an expressed commitment to and passion for the environment. Interns are placed with a host organisation and assigned a dedicated and trained mentor. Training workshops help interns to explore and develop workplace-based competences, such as ethics, relationships and communications in the workplace, employee rights and responsibilities, learning through feedback from performance appraisals and finding their next job.

Jumping in Pringle Bay

From conservation partners to big corporates such as Spar and Nedbank, WWF works with a diverse range of host organisations. WWF also works closely with all universities in South Africa to promote internship opportunities.

The programme responds to both environmental and social policy imperatives in South Africa. Responding to increasing youth employment, it also supports new graduates from multi-disciplines to develop the skills to respond to social and ecological challenges in an interrelated way, for example, sustainable agriculture for increased food security or water stewardship to create green jobs.   The first seven interns in 2011 were placed with WWF. The second intake of eight interns, included the first placement of an intern with a partner organisation. Seven years later the programme has recruited 50 interns who are placed with 17 partners.

1. The Graduate Internship Programme has a 90% success rate of interns transitioning from the internship into full-time employment. 2. The programme contributes to transforming the workforce for the environment with 66% females and 85% black South Africans supported through the programme. 3. WWF is proud to engage with 80% of South Africa’s universities, to ensure diversity of new entrants working for the environment into the future. 4. From an initial 7 interns in 2011 to 50 interns from 2017, a total of 177 interns have completed the internship and gone on to meaningfully contribute to environmental leadership in South Africa. 5. 42 committed partners have supported the hosting and mentoring of interns to support the career development journey of young graduates.

Internship Opportunity: M&E and Communication

WWF Tanzania is looking for a motivated individual to join their communications team and an Intern for the Ruvuma Landscape. ...

Internship for experimental thesis

Students enrolled in the Master’s Degree in Molecular Biology and Genetics (MBG), are expected to take an “internship for experimental thesis”, as per course regulation:

  • Molecular Life Sciences curriculum: 14 CFU (first year) + 22 CFU (second year)
  • Molecular and Digital Biology curriculum: 30 CFU (second year)

Students must find a laboratory where to perform the internship for experimental thesis and an internal supervisor . The internal supervisor must be a professor of the University of Pavia, not necessarily from the Biology teaching board, and can be the head of the laboratory where to perform the internship activity.

IMPORTANT for insurance purposes - in case of internship for experimental thesis in a laboratory external to the University of Pavia - partially or entirely:

  • Before starting the internship for the thesis, students must submit via Filo Diretto an authorization request form signed by their thesis supervisor and wait for the confirmation of the Student Administration Office before starting the activity in the external laboratory. The authorization request form can be downloaded from the section titled "Come fare la richiesta di internato di tesi" at the following page here ;
  • In case an extension of the internship duration is needed, the student MUST communicate it via Filo Diretto , so that the Student Administration Office can accordingly extend the duration of the required insurance coverage.

a. In a laboratory of the University of Pavia

In this case the head of the laboratory will be your thesis supervisor.

Laboratories of the Department of Biology and Biotechnology - check the full list here , otherwise you can find them organised by topic here .

Laboratories of other departments of the University of Pavia , see examples below:

  • Department of Molecular Medicine - check here ;
  • Department of Drug Sciences - check here ;
  • Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences - check here ;
  • Department of Physics - check here ;
  • Department of Chemistry - check here ;
  • Department of Electrical, Computer and Biomedical Engineering - check here .

You can also browse UNIFIND https://unipv.unifind.cineca.it/ to identify potential other thesis supervisors based on specific research themes.

b. In a laboratory external to the University of Pavia, in Italy

In agreement with your thesis supervisor that must be a teacher at the University of Pavia, you can perform your internship for the thesis (partially or entirely) in a laboratory outside the University of Pavia. In this case the head of the laboratoty will be your thesis co-supervisor.

Just as examples, find below a list of institutes based in Pavia or close by, where there are laboratories that might be suitable for your internship for the thesis:

  • Institute of Molecular Genetics IGM-CNR ( link )
  • Policlinico San Matteo ( link )
  • Fondazione Mondino ( link )
  • Fondazione Salvatore Maugeri ( link )
  • IFOM ( link )
  • IEO - European Institute of Oncology ( link )
  • San Raffaele Hospital ( link )
  • Humanitas Hospital ( link )

In agreement with your thesis supervisor that must be a teacher at the University of Pavia, you can perform your internship for the thesis (partially or entirely) in a laboratory abroad.

In this case, the head of the laboratory will be your thesis co-supervisor.

First of all, as an MBG student, you might want to look into the COIMBRA Cancer Biology exchange program .

Apart from that, please notice that a thesis internship performed - partly or entirely - abroad can be part of the Erasmus+ program and included in the correspondent learning agreement:

  • Erasmus+ traineeship program (check this page here ) - from 2 till 12 months, no limits to the destinations and student must find the hosting institution by himself/herself;
  • Erasmus+ Studio program (check this page here ) - from 2 till 12 months, only in the institutions the University of Pavia has got an agreement with - warning: not all hosting institutions accept students for thesis research;
  • Overseas Exchange program (check this page here ) - from 5 till 6 months - warning: not all hosting institutions accept students for thesis research.

In such cases, before planning to participate in the program and submitting the application, we recommend you to identify your thesis supervisor from the University of Pavia and coordinate with the relevant Erasmus delegate of the Department of Biology and Biotechnology (check here ).

For any support needed you can refer to the Mobility office ( [email protected] ) or book an appointment here .

For students enrolled from the academic year 2022-2023 in curriculum Molecular and Digital Biology: the credits of the internship for experimental thesis will be automatically registered after the thesis defence.

For students enrolled since academic year 2022-2023 in curriculum Molecular Life Sciences,

  • the credits of the internship for experimental thesis of the first year : students must send by email to the President of the Teaching Board ( [email protected] ) their study plan and the CFU acquisition module duly filled in and signed by the thesis supervisor. The form can be downloaded from https://dbb.dip.unipv.it/en/education/useful-informations-guides-and-forms , section “CFU acquisition modules for..”.
  • the credits of the internship for the experimental thesis of the second year will be automatically registered after the thesis defence.

In case students participate in a mobility program (Erasmus studio, Erasmus traineeship, overseas program...) and in their Learning Agreement are included credits related to the internship for the thesis, for the registration of the related credits, students should follow the instructions provided by the UOC International Mobility ( [email protected] ) .

IMPORTANT: At the end of the mobility period, at least 45 days before the graduation date, students must send all the required documents to the UOC International Mobility. They will check the documents and send the request of validation to the Erasmus Delegate of the Department, who will present such a request of validation to the Teaching Board, that is gathering once a month. Please keep in mind that the all process might take more than a month.

She Just Earned Her Doctorate at 17. Now, She’ll Go to the Prom.

Dorothy Jean Tillman II of Chicago made history as the youngest person to earn a doctoral degree in integrated behavioral health at Arizona State University.

Dorothy Jean Tillman II stands at a lectern wearing a black cap and gown at Arizona State University’s commencement.

By Alexandra E. Petri

When Dorothy Jean Tillman II successfully defended her dissertation in November 2023 to earn her doctoral degree from Arizona State University, she couldn’t wait to share the news with her best friend.

“It was a surreal moment,” Dr. Tillman said, “because it was crazy I was doing it in the first place.”

Dr. Tillman, at only 17, became the youngest person to earn a doctoral degree in integrated behavioral health from Arizona State’s College of Health Solutions, all before she was eligible to vote. Earlier this month, Dr. Tillman, now 18, took part in Arizona State’s commencement ceremony and delivered remarks as the outstanding 2024 graduate at the College of Health Solution’s convocation.

Lesley Manson, program director for the doctorate of behavioral health at Arizona State and Dr. Tillman’s doctoral chair, said Dr. Tillman displayed extraordinary perseverance, hard work and dedication for her young age, tackling every challenge head-on.

“She can serve as a real role model,” Ms. Manson said.

Dr. Tillman, called D.J. by her family and friends, was an early bloomer. She grew up in Chicago and was home-schooled from a young age, first in a group setting through online classes, and then by her mother, Jimalita Tillman, a single parent with a background in community theater.

Dr. Tillman was part of a gifted program before transitioning to home-schooling. Jimalita Tillman continued her daughter on an accelerated track: By the time she was 8, she was taking high school classes. While most 9-year-olds were learning math and reading, Dr. Tillman was starting college online.

At the time, they lived with Jimalita Tillman’s mother, Dorothy Wright Tillman, a civil rights activist who worked alongside the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and was a Chicago alderman. Dr. Tillman is her grandmother’s namesake (hence the II at the end of Dr. Tillman’s name).

During her early college days, Dr. Tillman’s classroom was often a Starbucks in Chicago, and her days began as soon it opened, she said. Her go-to order was an iced peach green tea with lemonade.

“Around the time when kids went to lunch, we’d be closing the computer,” said Dr. Tillman, who said her discipline and focus come from her grandmother.

Because of her age, Dr. Tillman lived at home while pursuing her higher education, and most of her coursework was online — a challenge for a self-described social butterfly. “I do love meeting new people and talking to people and understanding them and how their brains work,” she said. She found other ways to stay connected with friends through after-school activities.

At 10, she earned her associate degree in psychology at the College of Lake County in Illinois. At 12, she received her Bachelor of Science in humanities at Excelsior College in New York, and at 14, she earned a Master of Science from Unity College in Maine. She chose those fields because they can help scientists “understand why people treat the environment the way they do,” she told Time for Kids in a July 2020 interview.

Ellen Winner, a professor of psychology at Boston College and the author of “Gifted Children: Myths and Realities,” said that children like Dr. Tillman have a motivational intensity she calls a “rage to master.”

“One of the reasons they push themselves is they have a high, innate ability of some kind, and so learning, in whatever they are gifted in, comes easily to them and it’s very pleasurable,” she said. Schools are often not equipped for such gifted children, she added, which may lead parents to home-school their children. The trade-off, she and some experts say, is missing out on socialization and learning with children their age.

“There’s no perfect solution to kids like this,” Ms. Winner said.

Jimalita Tillman said she was sure her daughter was finished with higher education after earning her master’s degree. Dr. Tillman had just launched an organization to support Black youth in Chicago interested in STEM and the arts called the Dorothy Jeanius STEAM Leadership Institute. It was 2020, just after the beginning of the pandemic.

She was surprised when her daughter said she wanted to pursue her doctorate, and even tried to dissuade Dr. Tillman. But Dr. Tillman wanted to help young people with their mental health. She told her mother to trust her.

“I had to follow her lead,” Jimalita Tillman, 42, said.

Dr. Tillman was accepted into the management concentration at Arizona State’s College of Health Solutions, an online doctorate program. Her thesis on developing programs to reduce the stigma for college students seeking mental health services was based on a study she conducted for an in-person internship at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. Dr. Tillman hopes her story resonates with girls who are talkative, outgoing “out-there kind of girls who are trying to figure themselves out but are very smart.”

“I want them to see someone who has taken that energy, sparkle and excitement and packaged it in a way that is classy and beautiful,” she said.

Dr. Tillman may now have her doctorate, but she’s also excited about teenage things — like attending a prom. On Saturday, she going as her best friend’s date to his senior dance. They’re taking an Escalade outfitted with stars on the ceiling, she said, a feature she requested and that her mother made happen.

Dr. Tillman has been focused on school and her professional pursuits, and she plans to host her institute’s summer camp again. Then, she said, she plans to take a beat and have a “fun teenage summer,” doing things she loves, discovering new hobbies and figuring herself out in the process.

“I want to focus on who I am,” she said.
