Economists are talented professionals who help businesses and government agencies to conduct economic and statistical analyses. This guides management in running the organization, managing their resources appropriately, and maximizing profits.

If you want to work as an economist, you need to show the hiring manager that you have the required experience and skills . Your resume should have all your qualifications and accomplishments but ensure that it's well-structured. Use our professional resume templates if you're unsure what you should add to your resume.

Resume Format, Layout, and Structure

The resume format allows you to structure your resume correctly, starting with your most outstanding qualifications. There are three formats you can choose from.

  • Reverse-chronological order - This format is perfect for candidates who've worked for many years as economists because it focuses on experience.
  • Functional resume format - This format is perfect for graduates in the economics field and career changers. It's also called a skills-based resume because it focuses on your skills.
  • Combination/hybrid resume - This format is perfect for individuals with the required skills and experience. It combines the best features of the reverse-chronological and functional resume formats.

The structure of your economist resume should have the following sections:

  • The header section
  • Professional summary/objective
  • Education section
  • Skill section
  • An additional section (Computer skills and certifications, languages, volunteer work, awards/honors, and interests)

economist resume

The Resume Header

The header is the first section, and it contains your personal details . This information must be accurate so that the recruiter can reach you. These details include:

  • Your full name
  • Phone number
  • Professional email address
  • A link to your LinkedIn profile.

A good header

Chief Economist

738-911-009

Lake Worth, FL

linkedin.com/in/cynthiadavis

A bad header

1190 Pleasant Hill Road

House number 04

Date of birth 04/03/1988

Photo or No Photo?

It’s always better not to add a photo to your resume unless the hiring manager requires one. This is because recruiters believe that it increases the chances of being discriminated against.

Detail Your Experience As an Economist

The experience section is critical because this is where you highlight your work history. If you have a proven track record of succeeding in the role of an economist, a hiring manager will feel more confident giving you the job.

The job description can give you an idea of what the hiring manager is looking for, and you can tailor your duties to match the ones in the description . Use the right keywords and action verbs to optimize your resume and ensure the ATS system does not filter it out.

If you have gained transferable skills in other positions unrelated to the job, you can also mention them. Otherwise, it's always better to focus on the relevant experience.

Some of the details you will add here include:

  • The name of the workplace
  • The job title
  • The years you've worked at each place

In order to run this gauntlet, your resume must include the  resume keywords  for which the program is designed to look. You can get an idea of these keywords by examining the original job listing. We’ve also assembled the following list of common  economist resume vocabulary  terms.

Words to Use

  • Economic theory
  • Methodology
  • Presentation
  • Feasibility
  • Distribution
  • Peer-reviewed

Action Verbs

When your resume is complete, don’t forget to proofread it carefully. Typos and other common errors made in resumes could narrow your chances of landing the job.

Economist Resume Tips and Ideas

Economists are mathematicians who combine economic theory, data, and statistics in order to guide their clients. They make predictions, forecast trends, and determine the feasibility of courses of action.

Economists work for companies in various industries. They may be employed by research firms, the government, or private corporations. They must be researchers with an analytical mind and good critical thinking skills .

Responsibilities often include collecting and analyzing data, presenting findings, and advising decision-makers. Some economists teach at the high school, college, or university level. Make sure you know whether you should be submitting a CV or a resume for the job you are applying for.

Do you have what it takes to be a successful economist? Prove it by crafting a professional  economist resume  today. We’ll supply the raw materials you need, including  professional resume samples  and expert  resume-writing tips.

A chronological resume format is recommended.

When designing your economist resume, consider:

  • Professional appearance
  • Sections and headings
  • Contact information
  • Work history
  • Objective statement
  • Language proficiency
  • Publications

Resume Length

One page, letter size, 8.5 by 11 inches

The  chronological resume format  is recommended for most professional fields, including economics. This resume format is marked by the reverse-chronological listing of  work experience  and  education . Begin with your most recent experience, and work your way back. You will also include your contact information, a  skills section , and possibly a number of optional sections.

Because educational background and experience in the field are both major considerations, functional and combination resume formats are not recommended for economists.

How should an economist’s resume look?  A professional appearance is your primary concern. This can be easily achieved by using an  online resume template  or by basing your design on one of our  resume samples.

Start by selecting a professional font . It should be 11 or 12-point and easy to read. We recommended sans-serif fonts like Arial and Calibri.

Avoid the use of unusual fonts or too many colors on your resume .

Next, organize your information into clear sections with headings like “Experience,” “Skills,” and “Education.” You can use bold or slightly larger fonts to make your headings stand out.

Be sure to have ample white space, or margins, around each section of text. This affords your resume a neat appearance.

It is not necessary to include a photo with your  economist resume.  In fact, in some countries such as the United States, an unsolicited photo on your resume could result in the rejection of your resume due to anti-discrimination laws.

Sections of an Economist’s Resume

A few sections are requisite to every resume. These are:

These sections provide the most basic information that will allow your employer to determine if you are a good fit for the job.

You can heighten your chances of getting hired by including additional value-added sections to your resume, where applicable. These could include:

What can these sections do for you? The  resume objective statement  is used to capture the attention of the hiring manager, perhaps by highlighting a recent accomplishment.

Do you speak a language other than English ? Due to an increasingly diverse global economy, language fluency is always an asset.

Has your work resulted in publication or co-authorship? Include any publications on your resume which can help to establish your reputation in the field.

Generally, your resume should be limited to one page in length. In the event that you have ample credentials, such as publications, you may extend your resume to two pages.

Economist Resume Section Headings

Choose 2-3 sections. The most important for the profession.

When writing your  economist resume,  focus on your education, skills, and experience sections.

Most  economist resumes  display a degree in economics or a related field . Different positions will require different levels of education. Advanced careers may necessitate a doctorate degree in economics.

Expertise in the field of economics is essential. You will be required to conduct research on economic issues and trends and analyze the results using various methodologies. This may involve internet searches, peer-reviewed articles, interviews, databases, or surveys.

After the data is collected, it must be analyzed and interpreted. Mathematical and statistical skills are essential. Then, you must be able to effectively communicate the information to others. So, economists should have good verbal and written communication skills, as well as presentation skills .

Most employers also expect economists to have computer proficiency . The Microsoft Office Suite , especially Microsoft Excel, is often utilized, as well as statistical software .

Other important “soft skills” include being self-driven, investigation skills, detail-orientation, and organizational skills .

Work experience

Many employers look for economists who have experience working as an economic analyst or advisor, analyzing data, and forecasting market trends.

You may be able to highlight relevant transferable skills from seemingly unrelated employment. For example, if you worked at a grocery store during college, did you ever suggest an alteration in inventory to meet expected demand? Include such events in the  resume job description.

What’s the Best Economist Resume Format?

People have been debating the best way to fix the economy for decades, and the same goes for writing the perfect resume. There’s no single best resume format that works for everyone. It all depends on your personal style and the skills and experience you want to showcase.

While you’re free to choose the format you like best, there are a few universal resume guidelines that are important to follow:

  • Use reverse-chronological order for your experience and education sections.
  • Leave plenty of space between sections to maintain a clean appearance.
  • Stick to one page (two if you really can’t help it).
  • Use headings and bolded titles for each section to make it easy to scan for information.
  • Choose a professional font like Calibri, Arial, or Cambria.
  • Make your font easy to read with a size between 13-15 for headings and 11-12 for body text.
  • Save your resume as a PDF to prevent formatting issues.

Generally, the goal is to put the most important information at the top . Think of it like the trickle-down theory. You want the good information to draw in the reader (potential employers) and entice them to continue reading the rest of your resume.

For this reason, when you update your resume , always add your most recent work to the top of the list!

How to Write an Economist Resume Summary or Resume Objective

Now that you know all the pieces of a great resume, let’s go into a bit more depth on each. Since we hope you already know your personal contact information , let’s jump ahead to the resume summary or objective.

Your resume summary or objective is the very first thing hiring managers read , so it has to be good! But first things first, what’s the difference between a resume summary and resume objective?

  • Resume summary – A few sentences describing your professional experience and skills.
  • Resume objective – A short overview of your career goals and the skills that would make you a great Economist.

Resume summaries are better for applicants with professional experience in economics, while resume objectives are better for entry-level applicants who don’t necessarily have experience to summarize.

Economist Resume Summary Example

All it takes to write a good resume summary is a two to three short sentences about your past professional experience and a few of your most important (and relevant) skills.

The best resume summaries are short and concise . Tell them the good stuff and move on to the next thing. If you’re more of a visual learner, here’s what a good Economist resume summary might look like:

An accomplished Economist with over five years of experience collecting, organizing, and analyzing data. A strong communicator and highly adept at forecasting financial market trends for various agencies. Looking to join the ResumeGiants International as a Senior Economist.

There’s going to be a lot of “demand” for this applicant once the hiring manager reads that! It shows off the candidate’s analytical skills and data collection experience that the applicant brings to the table in a quick and concise way. It’s the perfect lead-in to the rest of the resume.

Entry-Level Economist Resume Objective Example

If you don’t have the experience to summarize, a resume objective might be for you! A resume objective is simply a few sentences that describe your overarching professional goals with a few key skills thrown in.

It’s always more fun to learn from other peoples’ mistakes, so let’s look at what a bad Economist resume objective looks like:

Recently graduated Economist looking for an entry-level position. I don’t have much professional experience, but I have a degree in economics and am very good with numbers.

This resume objective doesn’t show off anything special about the applicant. Being good with numbers is a great skill for an Economist to have , but it’s not something that’ll set you apart from the other applicants. There’s a very good chance every other applicant is also good with numbers …

Instead, you want to follow the same guidelines as a resume summary. Keep it short and concise, and be sure to include plenty of specifics that will set you apart. Here’s what a good Economist resume objective example might look like:

Newly graduated economics major seeking a Junior Economist position at ResumeGiants International. Eager to put analytical and forecasting skills into practice to track the changing economical environment.

This applicant might not have professional experience, but they did mention their specific analytical and forecasting skills, showing potential employers that they have some background in economics.

Remember though, keep this introduction truthful. If you exaggerate or lie on this section of your resume , it will be hard to justify when asked for details later in an interview.

Finally, everyone likes seeing their name, and that includes potential employers. It’s always a good idea to personalize your resume to fit the specific job , so mentioning the employer’s name is a great way to earn a few brownie points — and who couldn’t use a leg up when applying to jobs!?

How to Describe Your Economist Experience on Your Resume

Your resume summary or objective is like the trailer to the show. It hooks the reader (hiring manager) and encourages them to read on. The experience section is like the rising action. It’s arguably the most important part of the entire resume!

Your experience section doesn’t just show your past jobs and relevant past duties . It shows that you have the skills required to hold a position in economics and, more importantly, that you can put them into action in real-life situations.

There are three essential pieces of information that your resume experience section needs to showcase:

  • Work history
  • Key accomplishments
  • Responsibilities

You probably have tons and tons of work experience, but remember that it’s best to keep your resume to one page. Everything should be short and concise.

Every item in your resume’s experience section should be relevant to the position you’re applying to. The summer you spent waiting tables isn’t really relevant to an Economist position, so it’s best to leave it out.

If you really want to make your resume experience section stand out (and you really do), be sure to follow these time-tested guidelines :

  • Include concrete numbers and statistics.
  • Customize your work experience to suit the job you’re applying to.
  • Keep information concise and to the point.
  • Use keywords from the job description .

Applying for a job is a competition. It’s you against all the other applicants. Anything you can do to make yourself stand out will give you a better chance at getting the job.

For example, most Economists predict emerging economic trends, but if you have a specific percentage of successful predictions, that could be enough to put you above all the other applicants. The more specific you can be, the better!

Always customize your work experience to fit the job you’re applying to. If the job description mentions the requirement to use a specific piece of software, for example, make sure you change up your experience to mention previous jobs where you used the software.

Economist Resume Examples: Experience

Now that your ability to write a resume experience section is “inflated,” it’s time to look at some examples. First, here’s what not to do in your resume’s experience section :

Economist – 2019

  • Performed market research
  • Predicted economic trends
  • Analyzed financial data

This experience section likely won’t help you stand out from the other applicants. How many other up-and-coming Economists have performed market research or analyzed financial data? Likely all of them! The entry is missing descriptive powerful verbs and adjectives , leaving it weak and uninteresting.

Your experience section should be detailed, concise, and specific — just like all the other sections of your resume! Show potential employers what makes you unique with plenty of hard facts and specific numbers .

Knowing that, here’s a quick example of what a good Economist resume experience section looks like:

See how the specifics and active language add more oomph to this experience section? It shows hiring managers that you know what you’re talking about and helps you stand out from the other applicants.

Entry-Level Economist Resume: Experience Section

Even the best Economists have to start somewhere. Just because you don’t have much (or any) professional experience doesn’t mean you don’t need an experience section on your resume. It’s the most important part!

Luckily, you don’t need to get an official paycheck for it to count as experience. Everything from internships to seemingly unrelated jobs can count as experience.

If you can think of how working in retail is relevant to being an Economist, then you can include it on your resume! But you have to make sure the experience is indeed relevant.

Here’s an example of what a good entry-level Economist resume experience section looks like:

This might be unpaid work for college credit (aka. non-professional experience), but it counts as experience, nonetheless. And since this section is still full of specific information and statistics , it’ll look great on any hiring manager’s desk.

As long as you include specific details about your previous experience and how it relates to the position you’re applying to, it doesn’t matter if your job title actually included “Economist.”

How to Write the Education Section for an Economist Resume

Tracking and predicting economic trends is a big deal that takes a lot of knowledge. To show employers that you have the proper training to take on such a big role, it’s important to include a solid education section on your resume.

Luckily, your education section doesn’t have to be super in-depth. All you need is three key pieces of information :

  • Where you went to school
  • Dates of attendance

It’s a bit easier than forecasting financial data! As long as you have those three items, your education section will thrive.

Economist Resume Education Section Example

You know the pieces of a great education section, now it’s time to see them in action. Here’s a quick example of what a good resume education section would look like:

You can add as many degrees and schools as you want, but just remember to put them in reverse-chronological order . You want the more impressive degrees up top!

You’re also welcome to add your GPA if it is equal to or over 3.50, any academic accomplishments, and relevant coursework you carried out , but only if they’re impressive and relevant to the economics position you’re applying to.

If you have a college degree, you don’t need to include your high school experience. It’s usually assumed you graduated high school if you have college experience. Save the space for more important information.

The Best Economist Skills for a Resume

Your experience and education sections say a lot about your background and knowledge, but they probably don’t say everything. To really round out your expertise, include a skills section on your resume.

A resume skills section is exactly that. It’s a short section dedicated to showing off your wide range of skills (that are relevant to the position, of course).

Resume skills can be divided into two categories :

  • Hard skills – Measurable, concrete skills.
  • Soft skills – Universal, harder-to-define skills.

For example, a hard skill is something like being able to use a specific piece of software or analytical skills, while a soft skill is almost more of a personality trait, like leadership, organizational abilities , or communication.

You want to look well-rounded, so it’s always a good idea to include a mix of both hard and soft skills. These are just a few of the skills that look great on an Economist’s resume:

Soft Skills

  • Communication (written, verbal, etc.)

Hard Skills

  • Software skills (Microsoft Office, SAS, Oracle, etc.)
  • Financial markets

You’re undoubtedly very skilled, but no employer wants to read through dozens of bullet points of skills on a resume. Limit your skills list to only the more impressive and relevant to the position. Short, sweet, and to the point: That’s the key to a great resume.

How to Add Other Sections for an Effective Resume

There’s always more that you want to say about yourself, and it doesn’t always fit nicely into an experience, education, or skills section. So where do you put all the extra stuff that might help you get the position of your dreams? Into the extra sections!

Extra or other sections are simply additional sections on your resume designed to hold specific pieces of information , like awards or certifications. They can be anything you want as long as they’re (say it with me) relevant to the position you’re applying to!

For example, you might know how to write code, but a coding languages other section probably isn’t relevant to a position in economics. Stick to other sections that will make you look like the perfect fit to hiring managers.

Economist Resume Sample Extra Sections

Not sure what extra sections you should include? You’re free to include whatever information you think is relevant to the position and would make you stand out from other applicants, but here are just a few other sections that look good on an Economist resume and how to format them.

Make sure when you add your professional certifications that you include the years that you gained them.

  • Chartered Economist, 2019
  • Certified Economic Developer (CEcD), 2020

Economist resume examples for 2024

An economist's resume should showcase a range of skills, including economic research, data collection and analysis, project management, and policy analysis. Additionally, skills like Stata and SAS, interest rates, and financial markets are essential for success in the field. According to Erik Johnson Ph.D. , Assistant Professor of Economics at Carthage College, "Graduating in a recession stinks! It is harder to find a job, but if you do find a job, it will likely pay you less than the same position if the economy weren't in a recession." However, he also notes that graduates can "catch up" with their peers who graduated during good times by being flexible with their jobs. Thomas Krumel , Assistant Professor of Economics at North Dakota State University, advises students to focus on developing a skill set rather than just learning a set of buzzwords, as well as to cultivate proficiency in working with data, including Excel skills and formal programming language.

How to format your economist resume:.

  • Use the job title 'Economist' on your resume to match your application. Achievements, not just responsibilities, should be highlighted in your work experience section.
  • Economists should focus on quantifiable achievements in their work experience, such as 'Partnered with contractors and external stakeholders as expert on financial and economic analyses for complex litigation cases.' or 'Conducted economic studies and regulatory assessments for public policy.'
  • For readability, fit your resume on one page, prioritizing relevant information for economists, such as 'Model of Navy Manpower Cost Drivers for the U.S. Navy o Completed a full update for navy personnel using VBA coding.' or 'Prepared survey questionnaires and developed effective face-to-face interview techniques and other methods to ensure accurate, efficient data collection.'

1. add contact information to your economist resume.

Economist Resume Contact Information Example # 1

2. Add relevant education to your economist resume

Your resume's education section should include:

  • The name of your school
  • The date you graduated ( Month, Year or Year are both appropriate)
  • The name of your degree

If you graduated more than 15 years ago, you should consider dropping your graduation date to avoid age discrimination.

Optional subsections for your education section include:

  • Academic awards (Dean's List, Latin honors, etc. )
  • GPA (if you're a recent graduate and your GPA was 3.5+)
  • Extra certifications
  • Academic projects (thesis, dissertation, etc. )

Other tips to consider when writing your education section include:

  • If you're a recent graduate, you might opt to place your education section above your experience section
  • The more work experience you get, the shorter your education section should be
  • List your education in reverse chronological order, with your most recent and high-ranking degrees first
  • If you haven't graduated yet, you can include "Expected graduation date" to the entry for that school

3. Next, create an economist skills section on your resume

Your resume's skills section should include the most important keywords from the job description, as long as you actually have those skills. If you haven't started your job search yet, you can look over resumes to get an idea of what skills are the most important.

Here are some tips to keep in mind when writing your resume's skills section:

  • Include 6-12 skills, in bullet point form
  • List mostly hard skills ; soft skills are hard to test
  • Emphasize the skills that are most important for the job

Hard skills are generally more important to hiring managers because they relate to on-the-job knowledge and specific experience with a certain technology or process.

Soft skills are also valuable, as they're highly transferable and make you a great person to work alongside, but they're impossible to prove on a resume.

Example of skills to include on an economist resume

Economic research focuses on short and medium-term research in competitiveness, market structure, productivity, framework policies, business innovation, business investment, and sectoral trends and issues.

Economic analysis refers to examining or assessing issues or topics from an economist's point of view. The goal of such analysis is to find out how efficiently the economy or something within it is functioning. For example, a company's economic analysis would involve determining the profit it is making. According to some economists, economic analysis involves a systematic approach to determine how to use scarce resources optimally. To perform economic analysis, you should have analytical, communication, critical thinking, mathematical, statistical, and writing skills , in addition to being detail-oriented.

Economic data, also known as economic statistics, refer to quantitative measurements that record the economy. This allows companies and researchers to determine what the economy was like during a certain period of time compared to other economies, whether another country's economy at the same time or compared to the same economy years in the future.

Policy issues are key issues that influence the economic, social, and political life of a place where conflicts arise over the direction of government policy. Often the policy issues are general, dealing with broad approaches to problems, such as whether the federal government should increase spending on national defense or whether social security should be privatized in some fashion.

SAS stands for Statistical Analysis System which is a Statistical Software designed by SAS institute. This software enables users to perform advanced analytics and queries related to data analytics and predictive analysis. It can retrieve data from different sources and perform statistical analysis on it.

Data collection means to analyze and collect all the necessary information. It helps in carrying out research and in storing important and necessary information. The most important goal of data collection is to gather the information that is rich and accurate for statistical analysis.

STATA is a statistical software package used for data visualization, manipulation, statistics, and automated reporting. Individuals with experience in using other types of statistical software or a background in data science may find it easier to absorb the concepts of STATA quickly.

  • Economic Research , 8.8%
  • Research Findings , 6.7%
  • Economic Analysis , 5.8%
  • Research Projects , 4.4%
  • Other Skills , 74.3%

4. List your economist experience

The most important part of any resume for an economist is the experience section. Recruiters and hiring managers expect to see your experience listed in reverse chronological order, meaning that you should begin with your most recent experience and then work backwards.

Don't just list your job duties below each job entry. Instead, make sure most of your bullet points discuss impressive achievements from your past positions. Whenever you can, use numbers to contextualize your accomplishments for the hiring manager reading your resume.

It's okay if you can't include exact percentages or dollar figures. There's a big difference even between saying "Managed a team of economists" and "Managed a team of 6 economists over a 9-month project. "

Most importantly, make sure that the experience you include is relevant to the job you're applying for. Use the job description to ensure that each bullet point on your resume is appropriate and helpful.

What experience really stands out on Economist resumes?

5. Highlight economist certifications on your resume

Specific economist certifications can be a powerful tool to show employers you've developed the appropriate skills.

If you have any of these certifications, make sure to put them on your economist resume:

  • Certified Economic Developer (CEcD)
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
  • Certified Management Accountant (CMA)
  • Chartered Economist

6. Finally, add an economist resume summary or objective statement

A resume summary statement consists of 1-3 sentences at the top of your economist resume that quickly summarizes who you are and what you have to offer. The summary statement should include your job title, years of experience (if it's 3+), and an impressive accomplishment, if you have space for it.

Remember to emphasize skills and experiences that feature in the job description.

Essential Components of an Economist's Resume

An effective resume is crucial for economists seeking to impress prospective employers. A standout resume for an economist should highlight relevant professional experience, educational background, skills, and achievements that align with the job requirements. It must demonstrate proficiency in economic analysis, research capabilities, and the ability to interpret complex data. Below, we delve into the specifics of each resume section, discussing their significance and content. Additionally, we offer tips to enhance each segment.

1. Contact Information

Contact Information is a fundamental section on an economist's resume. It provides employers with the necessary details to reach out for interviews or further discussions. Ensure this information is prominently placed at the top of your resume.

How to List Contact Information for an Economist Resume

This section typically includes your full name, phone number, professional email address, and LinkedIn profile if available. Ensure these details are up-to-date and presented professionally. For instance, your email address should reflect a professional tone, primarily comprising variations of your name.

If you have a professional website or portfolio that showcases your work as an economist, include the URL here. However, confirm that the content is appropriate for your job application.

  • Avoid including personal details such as your birthday, marital status, or home address unless specifically requested.
  • Remember, accurate and current contact information is crucial as it facilitates communication between you and potential employers.

For applications to different cities or countries, consider mentioning your relocation preferences to avoid any misunderstandings later on.

Double-check this section for errors before distributing your resume. Incorrect contact details could cost you job opportunities.

2. Objective Statement

The Objective Statement is a concise paragraph at the beginning of your resume that outlines your career aspirations and suitability for the position. It should provide a snapshot of your skills, education, and relevant experience.

An impactful Objective Statement can capture the attention of hiring managers and recruiters, prompting them to engage further with your resume. Tailor this section to the job description, demonstrating how your expertise aligns with the employer's needs.

Articulate your career goals within the field of economics, whether in academia, government, or the private sector, and specify your areas of interest, such as labor economics, financial economics, or macroeconomics. This helps employers understand your career trajectory and how it fits with their organization.

Highlight key skills that position you as the ideal candidate, such as data analysis proficiency, familiarity with statistical software like STATA or SAS, and the ability to conduct in-depth economic research and communicate complex concepts effectively.

When crafting your Objective Statement, maintain a balance between professionalism and personalization, showcasing your passion and dedication to the field of economics. Keep it brief, aiming for two to three sentences.

Focus on experiences that directly relate to the job you're applying for. If you've previously worked as an economist or in a similar role, emphasize this experience. List the employer's name, your job title, dates of employment, and a brief description of your responsibilities and achievements.

Highlight any significant projects or initiatives where you played a key role or led the effort. For example, mention if you developed an economic model that improved efficiency or conducted research that influenced strategic decisions.

Include internships or co-op positions related to economics, as they provide valuable evidence of your capabilities, even if they were short-term or unpaid.

Use action verbs to describe your responsibilities and achievements (e.g., "analyzed," "created," "led") and quantify results when possible (e.g., "increased productivity by 20%"). This approach paints a dynamic picture of your professional history.

In summary, the Relevant Work Experience section is not just a list of past jobs; it's a narrative of how those experiences have prepared you for the role at hand, offering potential employers insight into your contributions to their organization.

Tips for writing your resume

To land the perfect job, you need the perfect resume. In today’s crowded job market, it is more important than ever to stand out among the competition. When you write your resume, it is vital that you get everything right, from the organization of the template to the details of your work experience. To make sure your resume is flawless, here are some tips for writing the best resume possible.

Let them know where to contact you

Your resume should begin with your contact information. It is very important that potential employers, having read your resume, know how to contact you! At the top of your resume, include your name, phone number, email address, and city.

Introduce yourself

A personal summary, though optional, is a great way to introduce yourself to an employer with your resume. This section is comprised of one or two paragraphs where you can feature your notable accomplishments and highlight your most valuable skills. Your summary should give employers a brief outline of your experience and capabilities and intrigue them to keep reading.

What do you do best?

Shorter than a work history section, in a skills section you can efficiently list your core competencies in a way that is direct and easy to read. Showcase the skills and abilities that you bring to the job, focussing on those which distinguish you from the competition. The more useful and unique your skills are, the more you will stand out to an employer.

Showcase your achievements

Display your work experience in reverse-chronological order, beginning with your most recent position at the top of the section. Describe for each job your title, responsibilities, and accomplishments, with a focus on performance and results rather than duties. Use action words like ‘developed, ‘produced’, and ‘delivered’ when describing your work history to create compelling and impactful descriptions of your experience. Highlighting quantifiable information, like performance metrics and revenue, is a great way to demonstrate your abilities.

What did you learn, and where did you learn it?

Your education section should include the name of any post-secondary schools you attended, the degrees you earned, and any academic distinctions you achieved that you deem worth featuring. If they are particularly relevant, you can also include major areas of study and important projects that you participated in. Like the work experience section, your education should be displayed in reverse-chronological order.
