This is an "Enduring Issue" essay prompt modeled on the New Regents examinations in New York State. This Enduring Issue Essay presents the students with five documents, from which they select three to support some enduring issue they see through history.

The effort to shrug off the dominance of a foreign power is one of the common themes of the 19th and 20th centuries.

Students in New York State Global history and Geography II (grade 10) will need to have completed their study of the Tokugawa Shogunate, independence of Haiti, independence movement in India, and European imperialism. Students should be able to do this essay after about 40 weeks, so it's a good end of year practice before the Regents exam.
