One cannot emphasize enough on the importance of freedom fighters. After all, they are the ones because of whom we celebrate Independence Day . No matter how small a role they played, they are very much significant today as they were in those times. Moreover, they revolted against the colonizers so as to stand up for the country and its people.

Furthermore, most of the freedom fighters even went to war to safeguard the freedom of their people. It did not matter that they had no training; they did it for the pure intention of making their country free. Most of the freedom fighters sacrificed their lives in the war for independence.

Most importantly, freedom fighters inspired and motivated others to fight injustice. They are the pillars behind the freedom movement. They made people aware of their rights and their power. It is all because of the freedom fighters that we prospered into a free country free from any kind of colonizers or injustice.

My Favourite Freedom Fighters

Secondly, Rani Lakshmi Bai was a great freedom fighter. I have learned so many things from this empowering woman. She fought for the country despite so many hardships. A mother never gave up her country because of her child, instead took him to the battlefield to fight against injustice. Moreover, she was so inspiring in numerous ways.

Next, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose comes in my list. He led the Indian National Army to show the power of India to the British. His famous line remains to be ‘give me your blood and I will give you freedom.’

Finally, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was also one of the greatest leaders. Despite being from a rich family, he gave up the easy life and fought for India’s freedom. He was imprisoned a number of times but that did not stop him from fighting against injustice. He was a great inspiration to many.

In short, freedom fighters are what made our country what it is today. However, we see nowadays people are fighting for everything they stood against. We must come together to not let communal hatred come between and live up to the Indian dream of these freedom fighters. Only then will we honor their sacrifices and memory.

The amount of pain and hardships that they have to endure to achieve their goal cannot be described in mere words. The entire country remains forever indebted to them for their struggles.

One can't stress enough the importance of the deeds of the freedom fighters. On every Independence Day, the country remembers the thousands who once struggled so that their countrymen could be free. Their sacrifices are never forgotten by their countrymen.

They went to wars and protests knowing very well that they may get killed by the opposite power. What is the Indian Freedom Struggle?

Indian Freedom Struggle was an inspiring journey for every citizen of India and it has been written in golden words in the history of India. The freedom we experience today is the courageous saga of sacrifices, relentless efforts, and unwavering determination of the freedom fighters of our land that induced the feeling of unity and strength among all the people of India. 

The Indian Freedom struggle led to a large-scale campaign which resulted in the end of British rule in India. Freedom was demanded by the Nationalists and the Congress party.

Initially, the leaders like Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Annie Besant, Dadahai Naoroji, and Gopal Krishna Gokhale raised their voices and put forward the feelings and aspirations of freedom of the Indian masses.

Mahatma Gandhi emerged as the face of the Indian Freedom Struggle and his weapon was “non-violence” which set India free from the hold of British rule.

We all have heard and read a lot about India’s Freedom Struggle through books, movies, theatre, etc. Every Indian citizen experiences a feeling of pride and respect for all those freedom fighters who struggled for Indian independence . It was all initiated in the late 1800s and lasted till 1947. Later, India became a republic in 1950. Indian men and women were colonized and ruled by the Britishers. 

Despite the diversity of the country, the Indian Freedom Struggle was the result of unity. People belonging to different castes, languages, religions, and regions undividedly fought for India’s freedom selflessly. The unity eradicated the social barriers and eventually resulted in freedom for the country.

Freedom fighters like Uddham Singh, Veer Savarkar, Tantia Tope, Bhagat Singh, Mahatma Gandhi, Bhagat Singh, Rani Laxmi Bai and many others had devoted their lives to the motherland. 

Mahatma Gandhi introduced the concept of Satyagraha. He believed that passive resistance and civil disobedience are influential weapons to challenge the dominating Britishers. 

Acts like Quit India Movement, Non-Cooperation Movement , and Civil Disobedience Movement have united millions of Indians in a non-violent Indian Freedom struggle. 

The Indian freedom struggle not only resulted in eradicating British rule but also inspired the whole world. Mahatma Gandhi’s principles of civil disobedience and non-violence helped other freedom movements across the globe.

The Indian Freedom struggle is literally a historic journey of Independence. The story of every freedom fighter of that time is so unique and inspiring that it induces a proud feeling among every citizen of India. The seeds of freedom were sown during the 19th century and it seemed like a never-ending war. During this period India witnessed many reform movements. The hard work, dedication and sacrifice of social reformers laid the groundwork for an awakened society. 

Everyone in the country followed an identical tune of independence. In 1885, the formation of INC (Indian National Congress) indicated the beginning of a collective political movement against Britishers. The country demanded “Swaraj” i.e. self-rule and it became a ringing call resonating in the heart and minds of the masses. 

Whenever we think about freedom and independence, Mahatma Gandhi will always strike us as an undisputed leader of the Indian Freedom Struggle. His philosophy of non-violence has inspired the whole world and is followed to date. He became the guiding leader who believed Satyagraha and civil disobedience as a potent weapon to fight against British authority.

Major Events of the Indian Freedom Struggle

From 1920-1922, Mahatma Gandhi led the first large-scale mass movement against the British Raj i.e. the Non-Cooperation Movement. People boycott British educational institutions, British goods, as well as Civil services etc. This movement was suspended by the Britishers, yet it brought the masses together in the Indian Freedom Struggle. 

Another key period in the Indian Freedom Struggle was the Civil Disobedience Movement (1930-1934). It all started with Mahatma Gandhi and his group of supporters marching to the Arabian Sea to make salt in protest of the British salt tax. People from many walks of life, including women and farmers, actively participated in this campaign.

The Quit India Movement (1942) was a turning point in India’s struggle for independence. It demanded that British authority in India be ended immediately. The British replied with persecution and brutality, but the Indian people’s tenacious spirit won over the Britishers. Several major leaders were imprisoned as a result of the campaign, and it acted as a wake-up call to the British that their rule in India was indefensible.

Many freedom fighters like Bhagat Singh, Subhash Chandra Bose, Chandrashekhar Azad and many others fought and became martyrs in Bhagat Singh, Chandrashekhar Azad, Subhash Chandra Bose, and countless others became martyrs in the fight for freedom. Their bravery and dedication would always inspire generations.

Freedom Fighters Who Fought Valiantly in India’s Independence Movement Reading Time : 7 minutes -->

India’s freedom movement against the British was witness to an overwhelming participation of people throughout the country. From Kashmir to Kanyakumari, Assam to Gujarat, thousands of men and women fought together against atrocities of the British Raj. While many selflessly gave their lives to protect the dignity of their motherland, others got injured and embraced imprisonment. Let us know about a few brave freedom fighters from various parts of colonial India who gave their lives to achieve freedom for their beloved motherland:

Surya Sen (1894 -1934 )

Popularly known as ‘Master da’, Surya Sen was a leading revolutionary in the Indian independence struggle against the British rule. He was actively involved in the Non-cooperation Movement. He is well-renowned for his leading role in the 1930 Chittagong armoury raid where he led a group of revolutionaries to raid the police armoury. He was hanged on January 12, 1934, for his attempts to rebel against the British.

Matangini Hazra (1869 -1942 )

Matangini Hazra was a revolutionary in the Indian independence movement who fought for upholding Gandhian principles. Actively involved in the Quit India Movement, she led a procession of revolutionaries to seize Tamluk Police Station in West Bengal on September 29, 1942. The police opened fire at the crowd, causing fatal injury to the 73-year-old braveheart.

Ram Prasad Bismil (1897-1927 )

Apart from being a freedom activist, Ram Prasad Bismil was renowned as a patriotic poet who wrote poems using pen names Ram, Agyat and Bismil. He was one of the founders of the Hindustan Republican Association. He was actively involved in the Mainpur conspiracy and the Kakori conspiracy in UP. He was hanged on December 19, 1927, for his revolutionary activities against the British.

Bagha Jatin (1879-1915 )

Jatindranath Mukherjee, popularly known as Bagha Jatin, played a crucial role in India’s freedom movement. With a dream of saving his motherland from the clutches of British rule, the revolutionary led the Jugantar party in Bengal. On September 10, 1915, he died after being critically injured in a gunfight with the British police. Inspired by Swami Vivekananda’s ideals, one of the bold statements made by Bagha Jatin was: “We shall die to awaken the nation”.

Bir Tikendrajit Singh (1856-1891 )

Bir Tikendrajit Singh was the prince of the independent kingdom of Manipur and the commander of Manipuri army. The Anglo-Manipur war took place under his leadership.

On March 31, 1891, the British government sent military force against Manipur from Kohima, Silchar and Tamu. The Manipuri army fought bravely against the British under the leadership of Bir Tikendrajit Singh but eventually lost. The British arrested him and he was finally hanged on August 13, 1891.

Pingali Venkayya (1876- 1963 )

Born in Andhra Pradesh, freedom fighter Pingali Venkayya was an ardent follower of Gandhiji’s ideals. Known for his knowledge in geology and agriculture, it was his design on which  the Indian national flag is biase upon. In 2009, India Post released a postage stamp in his honour.

Durgawati Devi (1907-1999)

Durgawati Devi was actively engaged in the armed revolution against the British rule in India. She was an active member of the revolutionary group “Naujawan Bharat Sabha”. After the assassination of British official JP Saunders, she assisted in the escape of Bhagat Singh and Rajguru via train. As revenge for the hanging of Bhagat Singh, Devi tried to assassinate Lord Hailey, the former Governor of Punjab. However, her attempt was not successful, ultimately leading to her imprisonment.

Tirot Sing Syiem (1802-1835)

A freedom fighter and chief of Nongkhlaw kingdom in Khasi Hills, Tirot Sing Syiem bravely fought with the British forces. Even though he gave a nod to British officer David Scott for construction of a road through his kingdom to connect present Bangladesh with Assam, he later launched a war with the British after he came to know of their conspiracy. Against the mighty British armed with modern weapons, Syiem fought with traditional swords, shields, bows and arrows, etc. After engaged in the war for four years, Syiem was eventually captured by British forces. He was then deported to Dhaka where he breathed his last. In 1988, India Post released a stamp in his memory.

Hemu Kalani (1923-1943 )

Born in Sindh, Hemu Kalani was a freedom fighter and one of the prominent student leaders of Quit India Movement in 1942 . In order to curb the movement in Sindh, British troops were sent on train to Sindh. To stop the British forces, Kalani along with his friends made a plan to derail the train. However, before they could execute their plan, Kalani was caught by the police. Even though he was tortured in an inhumane way, he never divulged the names of other members involved in the plan. On January 21, 1943, he was hanged to death. He was 19 then.

Pritilata Waddedar (1911-1932)

Pritilata Waddedar was a school teacher and a prominent leader of the anti-British movement in Chittagong. As a member of Surya Sen’s revolutionary group, she *led the armed attack* on Pahartali European Club on September 23, 1932. One person died and several others were injured in this attack. The attackers were later caught by the British police. Pritilata was wounded in a shooting that followed and was soon surrounded by the British police. To avoid arrest, she consumed cyanide and embraced death.

Rani Gaidinliu (1915-1993)

Born in Manipur, Rani Gaidinliu was a prominent figure known for her armed resistance against the British Raj. In 1932, the British forces declared her as a ‘terrorist’ for her involvement in the war against them. She was arrested the same year and sentenced to life imprisonment. She was released only after India got her independence, after which she continued to work for uplift of her people. Gaidinliu breathed her last at the age of 78 in 1993.

Khudiram Bose (1889- 1908 )

Born at Medinipur in West Bengal, Khudiram Bose was among the youngest martyrs of India’s freedom struggle against the British. At just 15, he had joined Anushilan Samiti and took part in several revolutionary activities against British Raj. He along with Prafulla Chaki attempted to kill British Chief Magistrate Douglas Kingsford at Muzaffarpur in 1908. However, their attempt was unsuccessful and it accidentally led to the death of two British women. This led to Khudiram’s arrest and subsequent death sentence. On August 11, 1908, at the age of 18, he was hanged to death.

Ashfaqulla Khan (1900-1927 )

Ashfaqulla Khan was a freedom fighter who fought against the British forces. He was born in Shahjahanpur. After the Chauri Chaura incident in 1922 when Mahatma Gandhi decided to withdraw the movement,  Ashfaqulla was not happy. Along with his friends, he decided to decided to form an organisation named Hindustan Republican Association. He was later arrested for his involvement in Kakori Train Robbery and sentenced to death. He was hanged on December 19, 1927.

Alluri Sitarama Raju (-1924)

Born in Andhra Pradesh, Alluri Sitarama Raju gave his life for the cause of India’s Independence movement. Through the 1882 Madras Forest Act, the British imposed its restrictions on the free movement of tribal people in the forest. As a reaction to this, Alluri led the Rampa Rebellion of 1922 against the British Raj. This rebellion which continued till 1924, only came to an end when he was shot dead by the British forces.

Jatindra Nath Das (1904-1929 )

Jatindra Nath Das was an Indian revolutionary who took part in Mahatma Gandhi’s Non-cooperation movement. He later joined the Anushilan Samiti. Born in Kolkata, he was known as a bright student. He was arrested for his anti-British activities and was imprisoned in Lahore jail. While he was imprisoned there, he went on a hunger strike for 63 days demanding equality for Indian political prisoners. As a result of this hunger strike, Das finally breathed his last on September 13, 1929.

To bring freedom, they had to go through a lot of suffering, exploitation, torture, and hardships. As a result, they were regarded as the embodiment of patriotism. For more than 200 years, the British dominated India. To achieve freedom, several Freedom Fighters used a variety of tactics against Britishers. People praise them for their tremendous sacrifices, struggles, pains, and also hard labor.

India’s Struggle to Freedom :

They fought to free India from British rule and establish it as an independent nation. Freedom Fighters come in all shapes and sizes. Some are well-known, while others silently gave their lives for the sake of their motherland’s safety. Whatever convenience and freedom we have now are solely due to the efforts of these freedom fighters.

Notable Leaders : Mahatma Gandhi, Bhagat Singh, Mangal Pandey, Rani Laxmi Bai, Subash Chandra Bose, Jawaharlal Nehru, Lokamanya Tilak, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Chandra Sekhar, Rajguru, and also Sukhdev are some of the notable liberation warriors who gave their lives fighting for their country.

Gandhi’s weapon of choice for combat was nonviolence. Rani Laxmi Bai fought thousands of enemies with her bravery. Even the second before he was hanged, Bhagat Singh continued to try to free India. All of the fighters had compelling stories to tell.

It is our responsibility to show our gratitude to them. We must all salute them from the bottom of our hearts. Even today, their anguish and also pride can be heard in their voices. We should celebrate their success not just on Republic Day and Independence Day. However, we must recall them on a daily basis.

Why should we learn about our Freedom Fighters? Freedom fighters battled for the country’s independence. We are commemorating Independence Day because of them. They are revolutionaries, and some of them utilized nonviolence to fight the British. India gained independence on August 15, 1947, as a result of the struggle of our liberation heroes. They committed their entire lives to the advancement of their country.

After a long period of revolutions, bloodshed, and warfare, they brought India freedom. We only live in a democratic and independent country because of these outstanding leaders. Many freedom warriors struggled to protect people from Britain’s injustice, exploitation, and cruelty. Despite their lack of training, they did it for the sake of their country’s freedom.

What can we do to honour them ?

During the struggle, several of them perished. As a result, we can appreciate their sacrifice and bravery in every situation in order to make sure their countrymen could lead lives of pride and freedom. They also inspired others to strive for their liberation. Through numerous liberation movements, they raised public awareness of people’s basic rights and power. It is only due to them that we are free of colonizers of any type. As a result, they are the source of our power and liberty.

It is impossible to overstate the significance of the actions of the freedom fighters. Every year on Independence Day, the country celebrates the hundreds of those who sacrificed their lives so that their fellow citizens could be free. Their people will never forget their sacrifices.

When we go back in history, we can observe that the majority of freedom fighters did it without any prior official training in war or related fields. They went to conflicts and protests aware that they could be killed by the opposing force. Freedom warriors included not only those who opposed tyrants with guns, but also those who participated in protests through literature, legal advocates, and those who donated money to the cause. The war against foreign powers was headed by these brave-hearts. They educated their fellow citizens on their rights and also drew attention to any existing social injustices.

The most significant impact that the freedom fighters had on society was that they motivated others to realize their rights and stand up to those in positions of power. Others encouraged to join them in their fight. The countrymen linked by a bond of nationalism and patriotic impulses due to the liberation warriors. Freedom fighters regarded as the driving force behind the liberation struggle’s victory.

Conclusion :

Our India is free because of freedom fighters, and we are citizens of an independent India. A wave of revolution swept the country as a result of their ideas, and everyone played the part of freedom warrior in some way. We should all hold these amazing people in high regard and never forget what they gave up for the country. The freedom warriors of our past have endured a lot of torture and suffering, and we have gained this freedom in exchange for their blood. Some freedom fighters became famous, while others stayed unknown, but they all achieved freedom for us, and as a result, they are still alive even after death.

For the freedom fighters, today’s free India was a dream come true. Their life’s ambition was to live in a free India, which we now have. Those legendary fighters gave us the freedom we have today, and we are forever indebted to them for their service.

Introduction:

The freedom of a country depends on its citizens. Every country has a few brave hearts who willingly give up their lives for their countrymen.

Freedom fighters play a very important role in making any country independent. India is a land of endless freedom fighters.

Many are known and many are unsung. All of them have their way to fight for freedom like some have chosen the path of Non-violence. While some show their bravery with pistols in their hands and swords.

Our Independence was hard fought the British ruled over our leads for a long time. But then, there are heroes, aren’t there? There are always heroes.

The ones who stand up and fight. some get the spotlight while the same stay in the dark and contribute just as much as others.

The bodies are true for India’s freedom fighters as well. For those who fought equally hard but never got any share of the limelight, because they simply never cared.

There are so many freedom fighters of India who contributed to the Independence movement but their names faded into the darkness.

Our country, India was colonized by the British. Our freedom fighters fought against the British for our independence.

Some Important freedom fighters of India are Mahatma Gandhi, Bhagat Singh, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Jawaharlal Nehru, and many more.

1. Pritilata Waddedar (1911-1932)

Pritilata Waddedar, who was born on May 5, 1911, in Chittagong (modern-day Bangladesh), was one of the first women to take up arms and engage in revolutionary activities.

She joined Deepali Sangh, a revolutionary organization that provided women with combat training when she was young.

She was eager to join Surya Sen’s Indian Revolutionary Army, but she was met with opposition because it was dominated by men.

But, along with Kalpana Dut t, she underwent rigorous training to become a member of this group.

After the Chittagong Armoury Raid , in which most of the IRA’s leaders were apprehended, Pritilata, who was only 21 years old at the time, was given command of a group of 7-10 young men who laid siege to the Pahartali European Club (a social club for Europeans).

This club was primarily targeted because of its racial and discriminatory practices. It had a sign that said, “Dogs and Indians not allowed.”

On the night of 23 September 1932, dressed like a man, she boldly led the attack. In the ensuing fierce gun battle, she got shot in the leg, which prevented her from escaping.

Instead of surrendering, she chose to swallow a pill of cyanide and thus became a martyr.

2. Basanti Devi (1880-1974)

Devi became involved in the freedom struggle after her husband, Chittaranjan Das, was arrested for participating in the Non-cooperation movement.

She took part in movements such as the Khilafat and civil disobedience.

She was also a founding member of the Nari Karma Mandira , an educational centre for women.

After the death of her husband, she ran the weekly publication of Bangalar Katha. 

She headed the Bengal Provincial Congress as its President and received the Padma Vibhushan in 1973.

3. Aruna Asaf Ali (1909-1996)

Aruna Asaf Ali was an Indian educator, political activist, and publisher.

She was an active participant in the Indian independence movement and is best known for hoisting the Indian National flag at the Gowalia Tank Maidan in Bombay during the Quit India Movement in 1942, giving the movement one of its most enduring images.

Aruna was dubbed the  Heroine of the 1942 movement  for her bravery in the face of danger and was called the Grand Old Lady of the Independence movement  in her later years.

She also edited Inquilab , a monthly magazine of the Congress Party, along with  Ram Manohar Lohia.

In a 1944 issue, she exhorted the youth to action by asking them to forget futile discussions about violence and non-violence and join the revolution.

Leaders such as Jayaprakash Narayan and Aruna Asaf Ali were described as “the Political children of Gandhi but recent students of Karl Marx”. She is one of women freedom fighters who have shaped our struggle for Independence.

4. Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay (1903-1988)

She is the first lady in India to stand in elections from Madras Constituency although she lost in the elections she pioneered the path for women in India.

She was best known for her involvement in the campaign for Indian independence and for being the impetus for the revival of Indian handicrafts, handlooms, and theatre in independent India.

In recognition of her work promoting handicrafts, UNESCO presented her with an award in 1977. She was also given Shantiniketan’s highest honor, the Desikottama.

5. Matangini Hazra (1870-1942)

Matangini Hazra was an Indian revolutionary who took part in the movement for Indian independence up until the British Indian police shot her to death in front of the Tamluk Police Station (of the former Midnapore District) on September 29, 1942.

She was affectionately known as  Gandhi Buri ,  Bengali  for  old lady Gandhi .

After Indian Independence, the first statue of a woman was erected in Kolkata, and it was Hazra’s in 1977.

At the location of her murder in Tamluk, a statue now stands. In Kolkata, Hazra Road is also named in her honor.

6. Bina Das(1911-1986)

West Bengal-born Bina Das was an Indian nationalist and revolutionary. She was born to parents who were active in the Brahmo Samaj and the battle for freedom and who worked as social workers and educators.

Das belonged to the Chhatri Sangha, a semi-revolutionary group of women’s organizations in Kolkata. She made an attempt to kill Bengal Governor Stanley Jackson on February 6, 1932, in the University of Calcutta’s Convocation Hall.

Kamala Das Gupta, another freedom fighter, provided the revolver. She attempted to shoot five times but was unsuccessful, and she was given a nine-year prison term.

After her early release in 1939, Das joined the Congress party. In 1942, she participated in the Quit India movement and was imprisoned again from 1942 to 1945.

She will certainly be remembered as one of the notable women freedom fighters in our country.

7. Suniti Chaudhary (1917 – 1988)

Suniti Choudhury was an Indian nationalist who, along with  Santi Ghose , assassinated a British district magistrate when she was 16 years old and is known for her participation in an armed revolutionary struggle.

She is often dubbed as the youngest female revolutionary of the Indian Freedom Struggle

Under the guise of presenting a petition to organize a swimming competition among their classmates, Chowdhury and Santi Ghose, both 16 at the time, entered the office of Charles Geoffrey Buckland Stevens, a British bureaucrat and the district magistrate of Comilla, on December 14, 1931.

While Stevens was looking at the petition, Ghose and Chowdhury took out automatic pistols from under their shawls and shot and killed him.

She will undoubtedly be recognized as one of our country’s notable women freedom fighters.

8. Jhalkari Bai ( 1830- 1858)

Jhalkaribai was a female soldier who was crucial in the 1857 Indian Rebellion.

She was an active participant in the women’s army of Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi.

She eventually rose to become a key adviser to the reigning monarch, Rani of Jhansi.

She assumed the queen’s identity during the height of the Siege of Jhansi and fought on the front lines for the queen, enabling her to safely leave the fort.

9. Savithribhai Phule (1831-1897)

Savitribai Jyotirao Phule was a Maharashtrian poet, educator, and social reformer. She and her husband Jyothioba Phule in Maharashtra significantly contributed to the advancement of women’s rights in India.

She is credited with founding the feminist movement in India. In Pune, near Bhide Wada, Savitribai and her husband established one of the first modern Indian girls’ schools in 1848 .

She campaigned to remove caste and gender prejudice and unfair treatment of individuals.

10. Beegum Hazrat Mahal

During the 1857 uprising, Begum Hazrat Mahal was one of the few women to oppose the British.

She was born Muhammadi Khanum. In Awadh’s Faizabad, she was born.

She married Nawab Wajid Ali Shah in a mut’ah ceremony later in life.

The last Nawab of Awadh, Nawab Wajid Ali Shah, was exiled to Calcutta after Awadh was conquered by the British East India Company in 1856. Along with her son Birjis Qadir, Hazrat Mahal made the decision to remain in Lucknow.

Awadh was annexed after a rebellion started in Meerut and the revolt’s flag was flown in Lucknow, which quickly spread to other Awadhi towns.

Only in Lucknow did the English continue to engage the rebels within the Residency building until they were able to reclaim their lost power.

11. Rani Gaidinliu (1915-1973)

A Naga spiritual and political leader who led an uprising against British control in India was Gaidinliu Pamei, also known as Rani Gaidinliu.

She joined the Heraka religious movement, led by her cousin Haipou Jadonang, when she was 13 years old.

Later, the campaign evolved into an attempt to expel the British from Manipur and the nearby Naga regions.

Gaidinliu, who was detained in 1932 at the age of 16, received a life sentence from the British authorities.

When they first met in 1937, J awaharlal Nehru pledged to work for her release. She was given the title “Rani” (“Queen”) by Nehru , and she rose to fame as Rani Gaidinliu among the local community.

She will unquestionably be counted among the most notable women freedom fighters in the history of our country.

12. Durga Bhabi (1907-1999)

A revolutionary who joined the armed resistance against colonial rule was Durgawati Devi, also known as Durga Bhabhi.

As a Naujawan Bharat Sabha member, she assisted Bhagat Singh in fleeing Lahore after the 1928 murder of British police officer John P. Saunders.

Rajguru pretended to be Durgawati and Bhagat Singh’s servant throughout the subsequent train ride.

Later, she undertook an unsuccessful effort to kill Lord Hailey, the former governor of Punjab, in retaliation for the hanging of Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, and Sukhdev.

13. Kittur Chennama (1778-1829)

Rani Chennamma, the queen of Kittur, was one of the first rulers to organize an armed uprising against British rule. In the modern-day state of Karnataka, Kittur was a princely state.

After the death of her little son in 1824, she retaliated against the attempt to take control of her domain. Raja Mallasarja, her spouse, passed away in 1816.

She is regarded as one of the few leaders of the day who comprehended the British government’s colonial plans.

In her initial uprising, Rani Chennamma overthrew the British, but the East India Company’s second attack resulted in her capture and imprisonment.

14. Sarla Devi Chaudhurani (1872-1945)

In 1910, Sarala Devi Chaudhurani, an educator and political leader from India, created Bharat Stree Mahamandal in Allahabad.

It was the country of India’s first national organization for women. Promoting female education was one of the organization’s main objectives.

15. Mirabehn (1892-1982)

In the 1920s, Madeleine Slade —also known as Mirabehn or Meera Behn—left her home in England to live and work with Mahatma Gandhi.

She was a British supporter of the Indian Independence Movement.

She spent her entire life advancing Gandhi’s ideals and human progress.

The height of the Gandhian era in the liberation struggle was when Mirabehn was living in India. At the Round Table Conference in London in 1931, she traveled with Gandhi and others.

Mirabehn’s autobiography is titled The Spiritual Pilgrimage.

She also published Bapu’s Letters to Mira and New and Old Gleanings.
