Graduate school can help you take your career ambitions to the next level. But the cost can be very high. That's where grad school scholarships and grants come in. Scholarships and grants don't need to be repaid, which means you can leave school with minimum drag on your post-graduation finances.

There are several categories of graduate school scholarships.

Merit-based scholarships are awarded based on your academic achievements and other achievements. In contrast, need-based scholarships are awarded based on the financial need of the student. 

Beyond these two main categories, you can find specialized scholarships designed for particular fields of study or demographics. For example, you might find a scholarship opportunity based on your prior military experience or your desire to obtain a graduate degree in a specific field.

Before you can snag a scholarship, you'll have to find the opportunity and apply for it . Your school's financial aid office is a good place to start your search because they might have information on school-specific scholarships. You can also find scholarship opportunities through online search engines, like the U.S. Department of Labor's free tool or Scholarships.com .

When you find an enticing opportunity, it's important to craft a compelling application. Many scholarships require an essay, which could make or break your chances. 

"Writing essays for a graduate scholarship is not the same as it was for undergraduates," says Ben Ralston, president of Sachs Foundation , an organization that provides scholarship opportunities to Black Coloradans. 

"You are later in your career and can focus less on what you want to do with your education and more about what you have already accomplished," Ralston says. "Get specific in how graduate studies will develop more professional skills to build on previous accomplishments instead of speaking more generally about future goals."

Grants are another form of funding that you usually don't have to pay back. Below are some of the most popular grants for grad school:

• Federal grants: Some federal grants are available to graduate students, including the TEACH Grant , which is designed to prepare them for teaching at the elementary or secondary school level. After graduation, grant recipients must teach full-time for at least four years in a school that serves low-income students. Skipping the teaching commitment means you'll have to repay the funds. 
• State grants : Many states provide grant opportunities to students. In some cases, these grants are designed to support students pursuing a graduate degree that's relevant to the state's needs. 
• Institutional grants : Many colleges and universities provide grant opportunities to students. You can find out about these opportunities through your school's financial aid office. 
• Private grants: Some organizations and foundations offer grant funding to graduate students. In most cases, you'll need to meet some specific eligibility requirements to apply. 

Tapping into this source of free money for college is a worthwhile option. If you are interested in grant funding, start by filling out the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) to potentially tap into federal grant opportunities. 

In terms of state-level, institutional, and private grants, you'll need to do some research to find grants that might apply to your unique situation. Consider reaching out to your school's financial aid office, they might have more information on grant opportunities you can apply for.

A fellowship for graduate school provides financial support to pursue a graduate degree. Depending on the fellowship, the funds might go beyond tuition costs to include a stipend designed to help students pay for basic living expenses. 

In many cases, fellowships are tied to teaching or research duties. For example, teaching assistantships and research assistantships are relatively common. With a teaching assistantship, you might be expected to teach a course to undergraduates or support a professor in their teaching duties.

Many schools offer fellowships on an internal basis, often with merit-based criteria and tied to a particular field of study. Students can also seek out fellowships from other organizations. HGSE Need-Based Grant

Application deadline: february 16, 2024.

HGSE Grants are awarded to Ed.M. candidates and range up to the present maximum of $22,500 for full-time students and $11,250 for part-time students. HGSE Grants are awarded on the basis of financial need in accordance with HGSE Financial Aid policies and methodologies. Both residential and online students are considered for HGSE Grant funding. A complete financial aid application is required to be considered for HGSE Grant funding, and the application deadline is the same as for the HGSE Financial Aid Application.

To be considered for an HGSE Grant, you must complete the 2024-2025 HGSE Admissions Application , and submit:

This page highlights opportunities that graduate students and recent Ph.D.s can directly apply to.

If you're interested in supporting graduate students with NSF funding, explore NSF's  Funding Search  page. Most of NSF's funding opportunities allow proposers to include graduate student researchers in their project budget.

Some NSF opportunities focus explicitly on supporting graduate student training through  internships  and other activities, like NSF's  Non-Academic Research Internships for Graduate Students (INTERN) program.

NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP)

The prestigious NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program  supports outstanding graduate students who are pursuing research-based master's or doctoral degrees in STEM — science, technology, engineering and mathematics — or in STEM education.

The five-year fellowship provides three years of financial support that can be used at accredited U.S. institutions. This support includes an annual stipend and a cost-of-education allowance covering tuition and fees.

Eligibility

Applicants must be citizens, nationals or permanent residents of the United States. Applicants must be pursuing full-time research-based master's and doctoral degrees in STEM or in STEM education at accredited U.S. institutions.

How to apply

International Research Experiences for Students (IRES)

NSF's IRES program offers international research opportunities to undergraduate and graduate students.

Participants are mentored by researchers at a foreign lab, allowing them to build their professional network. IRES opportunities usually involve small groups of students who travel to a host institution for a summer-length research project.

Undergraduate or graduate students who are citizens, nationals or permanent residents of the United States are eligible to apply.

Students must contact researchers with IRES funding for information and application materials. Application materials for different IRES opportunities can vary: they may require a statement of purpose, transcripts, reference letters or additional materials.

To find active IRES projects, visit the  NSF IRES Project Search . Each project lists the name and contact information of the principal investigator, or lead, of that project.

You can also find many (but not all) IRES opportunities on the  NSF Education and Training Application  website, where you can prepare and submit applications for IRES and other NSF education and training opportunities.

Computer and Information Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowships (CSGrad4US)

The CSGrad4US program helps bachelor's degree holders return to academia and pursue their research interests in computer and information science and engineering fields.

The three-year fellowship includes a stipend and cost-of-education allowance. 

Applicants must be citizens, nationals or permanent residents of the United States who are not currently enrolled in any degree-granting program and have never enrolled in a doctoral program. Applicants must intend to apply for full-time enrollment in a research-based doctoral degree program in a computer and information science and engineering field within two years.

Applications are typically due in the spring or early summer of each year. Learn more about the program and how to apply on the CISE Graduate Fellowships page.

Doctoral Dissertation Research Improvement Grants (DDRIG)

Some of NSF's programs offer grants to doctoral students, allowing them to undertake significant data-gathering projects and conduct field research in settings away from their campus.

The award amounts of these grants vary across programs but typically fall between $15,000 to $40,000 (excluding indirect costs).

Doctoral students enrolled in U.S. institutions of higher education who are conducting scientific research are eligible to apply. Applicants do not need to be U.S. citizens.

These proposals are submitted to NSF through regular organizational channels by the doctoral student's dissertation advisor, with the student serving as the co-principal investigator on the proposal.

Visit NSF's  Funding Search  to see the list of programs that currently accept DDRIG proposals. Deadlines vary by program: some accept proposals at any time while others have annual or semi-annual deadlines.

NSF Research Traineeship Program (NRT)

The NSF Research Traineeship Program gives graduate students opportunities to develop the skills and knowledge needed to pursue a range of STEM careers.

Graduate students funded by the program receive, at minimum, 12-month-long stipends that support their participation in the program's training activities, which can include courses, workshops and research projects.

Graduate students who are citizens, nationals and permanent residents of the United States are eligible to participate as funded trainees in the NRT program. International students can participate as unfunded trainees. Participants must be enrolled in research-based master's or doctoral degree programs.

Students must contact researchers with NRT funding for information and application materials.

Mathematical Sciences Graduate Internship

NSF's Mathematical Sciences Graduate Internship program supports summer research internships for doctoral students in the mathematical sciences. These internships are primarily at national laboratories and focus on introducing students to applications of mathematical or statistical theories outside of academia.

Current graduate students pursuing doctoral degrees in mathematics, statistics or applied mathematics are eligible to apply. Participants do not need to be U.S. citizens.

Presidential Management Fellowship Program

The Presidential Management Fellows Program is a two-year paid fellowship designed to prepare current or recent graduate students for a career in the analysis and management of public policies and programs. At NSF, fellows serve as program and management analysts and a variety of other positions requiring a scientific degree.

Current or recent graduate students are eligible to apply.

Summer Scholars Internship Program

NSF's Summer Scholars Internship Program is a 10-week-long summer internship for undergraduate and graduate students. Students participating in the program work in NSF offices that align with their academic interests.

Through the program, interns learn about science administration and how federal policies affect the science and engineering community.

Graduate students and undergraduates who are citizens, nationals or permanent residents of the United States are eligible to apply.

Applying for a postdoc?

NSF's Postdoctoral Research Fellowships support independent postdoctoral research, allowing fellows to perform work that will broaden their perspectives, facilitate interdisciplinary interactions, and help establish them in leadership positions.

These two- or three-year fellowships provide a stipend and a research and training allowance.

Citizens, nationals and permanent residents of the United States who have recently earned a Ph.D. or will have earned their Ph.D. before beginning the fellowship are eligible to apply.

Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA , as your first step to funding your graduate education. Citizens and eligible non-citizen graduate students, including permanent residents and U.S. nationals, are eligible to file.

You must file the FAFSA to qualify for federal and state-based grant awards. Many school-based grants also require the FAFSA.

Federal grants for graduate students include the Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education, or TEACH, grant. The TEACH grant provides up to $4,000 a year to education students who will teach in a low-income school or high-needs field after graduation.

Contact the department of education for your state and your school’s state to learn more about state-based grant opportunities.

Contact your school’s financial aid office to learn more about school-based grants and ask your department head about industry-specific grants.

Scholarships

Scholarships are available at the state, local and school levels. These awards are based on various eligibility criteria, which can include field of study and academic achievement. Some scholarships are also need-based or allocated only for certain demographics.

Apply for as many scholarships as you qualify for to increase your chances of getting the most money.

Check the Department of Labor’s Scholarship Finder or National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators’ state-based scholarship search tool to find programs.

Contact your school’s financial aid office and department head about specific scholarship programs you may be eligible for.

Fellowships and assistantships

Eligibility requirements and service commitments for fellowship and assistantship programs vary. While fellowships are offered by schools, private organizations or government agencies, assistantships typically only come from the school.

With a fellowship, you may perform research activities outside of your school and payment may not be directly tied to tuition. As assistantships are generally school-based, they are more likely to directly provide full or partial tuition waivers. Some assistantships also come with living stipends .

Contact your financial aid office about school-based fellowships and assistantships, including teaching and resident assistantships. Search the zintellect database, which has ties to the Department of Education and a consortium of Ph.D.-granting institutions, for government and private-sector fellowships.

Employer tuition assistance

According to a 2020 survey by the Society for Human Resource Management, or SHRM, about 47% of employers offer tuition assistance as part of their benefits package. This benefit can be in the form of tuition reimbursement, where the employer gives a lump sum to employees after they prove their tuition expenses. Other companies may pay tuition costs directly to the school, so the employee doesn't have to front the bill.

The amount of reimbursement varies by employer. The most common benefit ranges from $5,000-$5,999, according to a 2019 report by the International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans.

Contact your human resources team to ask about your company’s tuition assistance benefit. Make sure to verify that graduate school tuition qualifies. You also want to get an understanding of any service commitments that come with accepting the benefit. Some employers require you to stay with the company for a certain period after the reimbursement funds are disbursed.

If you exhaust all of your opportunities for aid that doesn’t have to be repaid, look to student loans to fill the remaining funding gaps for graduate school. Schools may include student loans as part of your aid package, but you have to repay them.

Filing the FAFSA typically qualifies you for direct unsubsidized federal student loans. As a graduate student, you can borrow up to $20,500 each year. These loans will accrue interest while you are in school, but typically come with lower interest rates than their private loan counterparts. They also offer repayment options that private student loans don’t, like income-driven repayment .

If you still need more funding, compare offers between the Grad PLUS loan from the federal government and options available with private student loan companies .

Unlike other federal student loans, PLUS loans require a hard credit check and may come with a higher rate than you can get with a private lender. But if you think you’ll need the protections of federal student loans, they’re still a better option.

Candidates must hold a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher. Required application materials include a digital photo, proof of tribal enrollment, and an official or unofficial college transcript.

American Indian Education Fund

Application Details: The AIEF offers competitive grants to American Indian or Alaska Native graduate students who take between six and 18 credits per term. This award is reserved for brick-and-mortar students. Applicants must demonstrate a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher.

American Indian Graduate Center Scholarships

Application Details: AIGC offers several graduate scholarships for candidates who are enrolled members of federally recognized American Indian tribes or Alaska Native groups. Awards are available for students pursuing degrees in STEM fields, veterinary medicine, public health, nursing, and library science. AIGC also sponsors a graduate fellowship.

American Indian Nurse Scholarship Program

Application Details: The National Society of Colonial Dames of America offers this scholarship to candidates who claim at least one-quarter Native ancestry. Applicants must be enrolled in a nursing, healthcare or health education program at an accredited institution, and must demonstrate financial need. Funds are distributed in two installments.

Amount: $3,000

Association on Indian American Affairs Scholarship

Application Details: The AAIA Scholarship is open to full-time students belonging to any federally, state, or non-federally recognized tribe in the contiguous U.S. or Alaska. Required application materials include an official transcript, proof of tribal enrollment and a two- to three-page essay.

Brown and Caldwell Minority Scholarship

Application Details: This award funds full-time graduate students who identify as Alaska Natives or members of other minority groups and are enrolled in a civil, chemical, electrical, environmental, or mechanical engineering program. A cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher is required. Applicants must submit a resume, two letters of recommendation, and a 250-word essay.

Cherokee Nation Scholarships

Application Details: The Cherokee Nation offers two graduate-level scholarships for tribal members. The Graduate Scholarship award funds students pursuing their first master's or doctoral degree, while the Direct Study Scholarship is available to candidates pursuing a postgraduate degree in a field aimed at strengthening the Cherokee Nation government and economy. Residency restrictions apply for both awards.

Chickasaw Nation Scholarships and Grants

Application Details: The Chickasaw Nation sponsors several financial aid opportunities for tribal members seeking graduate degrees. The General Scholarship is open to part- or full-time Chickasaw students who maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. Master's and doctoral students with at least a 2.0 GPA may apply for additional grants. Additional opportunities include textbook grants and a laptop scholarship.

Osage Nation Higher Education Scholarship

Application Details: This award is available to enrolled members of the Osage Nation who are pursuing a master's or doctoral degree. Recipients must maintain a 2.0 GPA or higher. The Osage Nation also sponsors the Mary E. Tinker Scholarship for graduate students and the Eugene Daniel Scholarship for medical students at any degree level.

Truman D. Picard Scholarship

Application Details: This award from the Intertribal Timber Council supports Native American students pursuing degrees related to natural resources. Applicants must demonstrate financial need, and should submit an application letter discussing their interest in natural resources and commitment to their education, community, and culture.

Asian/Pacific Islander

Aicpa scholarship award for minority accounting students.

Application Details: The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants provides this scholarship to full-time graduate-level accounting students. Candidates must belong to an ethnic minority group and plan to obtain CPA licensure after graduation.

APALA Scholarship

Application Details: The Asian/Pacific American Librarians Association offers this award for students earning a master's or doctoral degree in library and/or information science. Candidates may be enrolled full- or part-time, and must claim Asian/Pacific Islander heritage. This award is administered in two equal payments during the fall and spring terms.

Filipino-American Psychology Scholarship

Application Details: This award is open to Filipino-American students earning a master's or doctoral degree in any psychology field. Graduating seniors planning to earn a graduate-level psychology degree are also eligible to apply. Applicants must submit an unofficial transcript, two letters of recommendation, and an essay describing their commitment to the Filipino-American community.

Hsiao Memorial Social Sciences Scholarship

Application Details: This scholarship from the Asian Pacific Fund funds graduate students with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Candidates claiming Asian heritage who pursue graduate degrees in social science or economics receive preference. U.S. citizens, residents, and foreign nationals may apply.

Hmong American Education Fund Scholarships

Application Details: The Hmong American Education Fund offers five individual awards for full-time graduate students. Application materials include an essay of up to 1,500 words, an unofficial transcript, and one letter of recommendation.

Japanese Medical Society of America Scholarships

Application Details: The JMSA offers multiple scholarships for candidates pursuing medical degrees. Application may qualify for multiple scholarships. Candidates must submit a project proposal related to their academic field and a letter of recommendation.

Korean American Scholarship Foundation

Application Details: These scholarships are intended for full-time Korean American graduate students. Funds are awarded by the organization's seven regional chapters and vary by region. Candidates are evaluated for financial need and scholastic achievement. Applicants must submit letters of recommendation and a personal essay.

Amount: $500 to $5,000

Mary Quon Moy Ing Memorial Scholarship

Application Details: The Asian American Journalists Association provides this award to graduate-level journalism students. AAJA membership is encouraged, but not required, and applicants must demonstrate commitment to the organization's mission.

South Asian Journalists Association Scholarship

Application Details: This nonrenewable award is open to graduate students pursuing journalism degrees and careers. Candidates who claim heritage from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, and/or Sri Lanka receive preference. Other applicants who express an interest in covering South Asia may also apply for funding.

Tang Scholarship

Application Details: This award is available to students who claim Asian/Pacific Islander ancestry and identify as LGBTQ. Eligible candidates must be high school graduates from one of nine California counties hold a minimum 3.0 GPA. The award is renewable for up to three years.

Black/African-American

Application Details: This AICPA scholarship is intended for full-time graduate students pursuing an accounting degree. Candidates must identify as black or African American, or belong to other ethnic groups underrepresented in the accounting field. Applicants must also plan to become CPAs after graduation.

Amount: $3,000-$5,000

Albert W. Dent Graduate Scholarship

Application Details: Sponsored by the American College of Healthcare Executives, this award funds graduate students entering their final year of a healthcare management program. Candidates should identify as black/African-American or as members of another minority group, and must be pursuing an MHA, MPH, and MBA in healthcare administration.

Allison E. Fisher Scholarship

Application Details: This scholarship from the National Association of Black Journalists targets graduate students majoring in journalism or communication-related fields. Candidates must provide a record of community service and an essay explaining their reasons for choosing a journalism career. Applicants must hold a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Application Details: Brown and Caldwell offers this scholarship for students enrolled in civil, chemical, electrical, environmental, or mechanical engineering graduate programs. Candidates must identify as African-American or belong to another minority group. Application materials include two letters of recommendation and a personal essay.

CBC Spouses Education Scholarship

Application Details: The Congressional Black Caucus provides this scholarship to full-time graduate students in any academic field who identify as black or African-American. Candidates should maintain a GPA of 2.5 or higher, demonstrate an interest in leadership and community service, and provide two letters of recommendation and a current resume.

Amount: $500-$8,200

Charles Shelton Foundation

Application Details: This nonrenewable scholarship provides funding for African American, full-time graduate students who are pursuing a degree and career in veterinary medicine. A minimum 3.0 GPA is required. Applicants must submit two sealed letters of recommendation, a resume, and an essay of up to 750 words.

NABA Scholarships

Application Details: The National Association of Black Accountants sponsors three scholarships for graduate students earning degrees in accounting, finance, or business. Candidates must identify as black, African American, or Caribbean. Eligible applicants should hold a 3.0 GPA or higher and current student membership in the NABA.

Amount: $1,000-$5,000

National Black Nurses Association Scholarships

Application Details: The NBNA offers a total of 18 scholarships for graduate-level nursing students with at least one year of school remaining. Candidates must be members of their NBNA local chapter, or direct members if they live more than 50 miles from the nearest chapter location. Required application materials include two letters of recommendation and a personal essay.

Amount: $1,000-$15,000

NBMBAA Collegiate Partnership Program

Application Details: The National Black MBA Association sponsors scholarships for MBA candidates and graduate-level business students at more than 30 schools nationwide. In addition to financial aid, students receive discounts on test preparation and one-on-one mentoring services.

Wynetta E. Frazier Sister-to-Sister Scholarship

Application Details: Sponsored by the National Hook-Up of Black Women, Inc., this scholarship funds female African American female students whose education has been delayed or interrupted due to personal reasons. Qualifying candidates must be at least 21 years old, and should provide two letters of recommendation, an official transcript, and a personal statement.

Hispanic/Latino

Application Details: AICPA offers this award to graduate students pursuing accounting degrees. Candidates must identify as Hispanic or Latino, or belong to another ethnic group that is underrepresented in the accounting field. Applicants must be full-time students who plan to obtain CPA licensure.

Association of Cuban-American Engineers Scholarship Foundation

Application Details: The ACAESF provides this scholarship for engineering graduate students claiming Cuban-American or other Hispanic heritage. Candidates must be full-time students who have completed at least 30 credits at an ABET-accredited school. U.S. citizenship or permanent residency status is also required.

Amount: $500-$2,500

Carlos M. Castañeda Journalism Scholarship

Application Details: This award is open to Spanish-speaking graduate-level journalism students who are interested in covering Latin America. Applicants must submit three letters of faculty recommendation, three samples of work published in Spanish, and a 2,000-word personal essay in Spanish.

Amount: $7,000

HACU Scholarship

Application Details: The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities offers multiple scholarships for graduate students enrolled at HACU-member schools. These include the Miller Light and Coors Light scholarships, both of which are valued at $2,500 and open to Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients. Candidates for all awards must demonstrate financial need.

Hispanic Scholarship Fund

Application Details: The HSF is a merit-based scholarship fund that supports graduate students claiming Hispanic heritage. Candidates must hold a 2.5 GPA or higher who plan to enroll full time in an accredited master's or doctoral program. The HSF is open to all majors, but STEM majors receive preference.

Amount: $500-$5,000

John Deere Scholarship

Application Details: This scholarship is available to Hispanic and Latino/a graduate students earning their degree in a STEM field. Candidates must be enrolled at a school in Region 6, which comprises the states of Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas. Applicants should also hold U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status.

MALDEF Law School Scholarship

Application Details: The Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund provides financial support for graduate-level law students planning to advance Latino/a rights through their legal career. MALDEF awards up to 15 scholarships annually. Applicants must submit a resume, a personal essay, and one letter of recommendation.

NAHN Scholarship

Application Details: Graduate-level nursing students who claim Hispanic heritage may apply for this scholarship from the National Association of Hispanic Nurses. Recipients are chosen based on academic standing and merit, financial need, and NAHN membership status. Winners must attend the NAHN Annual Conference to accept the award in person.

Prospanica Foundation Scholarships

Application Details: Sponsored by the Prospanica Foundation, this award is open to Hispanic and Latino/a grad students enrolled in accredited business programs. Candidates must be current Prospanica members with a GPA of 3.0 or higher and at least two years of full-time work experience. U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status is also required.

Amount: $2,000-$5,000

Women of ALPFA Scholarship

Application Details: The Association of Latino Professionals in Finance and Accounting offers this scholarship to female students of Hispanic origin who are currently enrolled in or planning to enter graduate school. Accepted majors include accounting, finance, business, or engineering. Applicants must be U.S. citizens and maintain a 3.0 GPA or higher.

ABA Foundation Diversity Scholarship

Application Details: The American Bus Association provides this scholarship for graduate students earning degrees in a travel- or tourism-related field. Candidates should also belong to a traditionally underrepresented group in the industry, including ethnic minority groups. Applicants must submit a 500-word essay describing their career goals in travel and tourism.

Ford Foundation Fellowship

Application Details: The Ford Foundation Fellowship provides three years of financial support for full-time graduate students pursuing a doctoral degree in science. American Indian/Alaska Native, Pacific Islander, black/African-American, and Hispanic/Latino receive preference. This award is extended to U.S. citizens, nationals, permanent residents, and DACA recipients.

Amount: $24,000 per year; $72,000 for three years

George A. Strait Minority Scholarship

Application Details: This award from the American Association of Law Libraries is available to students belonging to any minority group who are earning a graduate-level degree in library science or attending law school. Candidates must plan to pursue careers as law librarians. Applicants may also qualify for the George A. Strait Minority Fellowship, which includes a paid fellowship in a law library.

Judith McManus Price Scholarship

Application Details: This scholarship from the American Planning Association is open to grad students pursuing degrees in professional planning who identify as female and/or American Indian/Alaska Native, black/African-American, or Hispanic/Latino. Candidates should also be U.S. citizens, and intend to pursue planning careers in the public sector.

LITA/LSSI Minority Scholarship in Library and Information Technology

Application Details: The Library and Information Technology Association offers this scholarship to American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian/Pacific Islander, black/African-American, or Hispanic/Latino students earning a master's degree in library science. U.S. or Canadian citizenship is required. Candidates who have earned more than 12 credits in their program are ineligible.

NBCC Foundation Minority Fellowships

Application Details: The National Board for Certified Counselors sponsors three fellowships aimed at students in underrepresented minority groups who are earning graduate degrees in mental health or addictions counseling. Two fellowships are available at the master's level and one is offered to doctoral students. Candidates must be enrolled in a CACREP-accredited program related to the fellowship category. Recipients must attend the Bridging the Gap Symposium prior to and after being named as a fellow.

GradPro offers a limited number of small grants (up to $1,000) each year to departments to run career preparation and exploration opportunities for graduate students. A preference is given to funding the development and implementation of new programs and events, and programs and events that foster faculty participation. Applications for these grants are accepted on a rolling basis and should be submitted no later than one month prior to the event or program. However it is strongly recommended that applications for events or programs be submitted the semester prior to the event or program date.

Grant Application Requirements

Applications must be submitted by a faculty member, although graduate students are encouraged to work with faculty to develop a grant proposal. The program, event, or resource funded must be available to all students in the department.

The use of grant funds should be informed by the professional development needs and experiences of students in the department. The purpose of this requirement is to make sure current student experiences and needs inform professional development efforts undertaken by your department. If your department does not have a formalized way to collect input from students, GradPro recommends that departments take part in a needs assessment facilitated by GradPro. Departments that receive grant funds will be asked to provide a brief summary report after the funded project has been completed.

Eligible Grant Expenses

Events, programs, and resources that grant funding can be used for include, but are not limited to :

• Alumni career panel (for nonacademic careers or both non-academic and academic careers)
• Workshop or panel on other professional development topics (e.g., job negotiations, converting CV to resume, transferable skills)
• Creation or updating of alumni career list (including academic and non-academic careers) that is accessible to students and faculty
• Creation or updating of section of department handbook or wiki pertaining to non-academic and academic job search
• Development of unit devoted to professional or career development topics in a required seminar for students (often called a “proseminar”)
• Development of mock-interview program for academic and non-academic jobs, including feedback from faculty

The grant funds can go towards expenses such as speakers fees or honoraria, refreshments and food, costs for event materials, or payment for student organizers.

Financial Aid Award Guide

The Financial Aid and Scholarships Office works closely with students to make a priceless UC Berkeley education an affordable reality. At UC Berkeley, we are proud to say that nearly everyone is eligible for financial aid. This Graduate Award Guide will assist you in understanding and accepting the financial aid you have been offered.

The Financial Aid and Scholarships Office administers federal loans, state Dream loans and work-study awards for graduate and professional students. If you are interested in being considered for federal loans, state Dream loans, and/or work-study, please complete the applicable financial aid application; either the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or the California Student Aid Commission’s California Dream Act Application .

Students receiving merit-based awards including fellowships, fee remissions for teaching and research appointments, and department awards are encouraged to contact the Graduate Division or their academic department for more information about these awards. 

It is important to understand that the Estimate Your Aid Calculator published by the Office of Admissions is intended for undergraduates only.  You will not receive an accurate assessment of graduate aid eligibility from the calculator.

Note: Federal regulations require that these awards be reported to the Financial Aid and Scholarships Office. The total of the financial aid awards you receive cannot exceed your Cost of Attendance . It is possible, therefore, that these merit-based awards could reduce other financial aid awards. We may need to reduce your federal loan(s) and/or work-study award(s) by the amount of your merit-based award(s) to ensure that your total awards do not exceed your Cost of Attendance. Some adjustments may result in an invoice on your student account.

Cost of Attendance: Your Cost of Attendance is an estimate of your total expenses based on your college or program’s academic year (tuition, fees, and living expenses). Most graduate program’s follow a nine month academic year but there are some that have slightly different program lengths. By federal law, a Cost of Attendance may cover only student expenses for the terms defined as the academic year. Expenses for periods of non enrollment, spouse, and dependent living expenses cannot be included, with the exception of documented child care costs which may be added.

Your eligibility for Federal Direct Loans will be the difference between your Cost of Attendance and any other merit-based or other grant awards you receive. You may submit a Cost of Attendance (COA) Adjustment Request with documentation of any educational expenses you have that exceed items in the standard Cost of Attendance within the academic year terms for which you are enrolled. COA Adjustment Request Forms can be downloaded from the Forms section of this site.

Student Contribution: Your Student Contribution is calculated by a formula called Federal Methodology passed into law by Congress in 1992. Your Student Contribution is derived from the income and assets you report on your FAFSA. Your Student Contribution is not used to determine your eligibility for merit-based grant awards from your academic department or the Graduate Fellowships Office, or for most federal loans. Your Student Contribution is only used to determine your eligibility for Health Professions Student Loans, and Federal Work-Study.

Other Resources: These are awards, fee remissions, and waivers that have been reported by sources outside of the Financial Aid and Scholarships Office, including your academic department and the Graduate Fellowships Office. If you have been notified of any awards not shown in this section, you are required to report them in your CalCentral account. It is your responsibility throughout the year to report any Graduate Student Instructor (GSI) or Graduate Student Researcher (GSR) jobs, fellowships, or department awards (fees and/or stipend), travel grants, normative time grants, fee remissions, GSHIP waivers, or other aid not already shown in this section. Please note that if your department has only reported the fall semester portion of an award and you anticipate receiving more funding in the spring semester, it is important to add the spring award in the My Finances section of your Cal Central account as soon as you become aware of it. Outside awards may be reported to the Financial Aid and Scholarships Office at any time and you are encouraged to make sure that all of your awards are reported in a timely manner.

If you report changes in resources, your financial aid eligibility will be re-evaluated and we will notify you by email if your award is revised. If the Graduate Division, your academic department, or an outside agency reports awards that you have not previously reported to us, we will adjust your loan(s) or work-study. You may be required to repay loans already disbursed if the total of your financial aid awards, including your outside aid, exceeds your Cost of Attendance.

Financial Aid Awards: This is your offer of federal financial aid. Typical financial aid offers include a Federal Direct Loan and a Federal Direct Grad PLUS Loan to meet your Cost of Attendance. Financial aid offers will not include other types of awards unless you, your department, or the Graduate Division's Fellowships Office have reported them to the Financial Aid and Scholarships Office. See Types of Financial Aid below for loan details or information about how to request work-study.

Your financial aid offer may be revised if: 1) there are changes in your financial situation (e.g., funds or support from any source including the Graduate Division or your department), 2) there is a change in state or federal funding availability, 3) there is a change in your enrollment (e.g. fall & spring enrollment to fall only enrollment) or 4) there is an error in the offer.

The Financial Aid and Scholarships Office will normally reduce unpaid Direct Loans prior to reducing paid Direct Loans. This means your spring refund from your Direct Loan could be less than the fall refund if new award information was added to your aid package after fall Direct Loan paid to your account. These adjustments will appear on your student account in the My Finances section of CalCentral .

Log into CalCentral and navigate to the My Finances tab. Click on the View Awards button under Financial Aid and Scholarships. On the right hand column of the page, under Awards, you will be able to view, accept or decline your awards and/or to request a work-study award. Review your financial aid offer to ensure all fellowships, department, or other outside awards have been reported. These awards are automatically accepted for you.

Federal Direct Loans are available to most students regardless of income. To be considered for a loan you must have filed the FAFSA . Federal Direct Loans provide a range of repayment options including income-based repayment plans and loan forgiveness benefits, which other education loans are not required to provide. You may accept all, a portion of or none of your loan(s) at this time. You are under no obligation to accept the loans offered to you. We strongly encourage you to borrow only what you need to meet your educational expenses. You may accept some now, and request an additional loan later. Students enrolled at least half-time in both the fall and spring semesters have until April 15th to accept loans.

To request additional loan after you have accepted the full amount of loan, visit the Cal Student Central webpage and open a case.

For programs that end earlier than the standard academic calendar, the deadline to accept your loan is three weeks before the end of your program term.

These are priority deadlines that will ensure Financial Aid and Scholarships will have time to process and originate your loan. You may accept your loans later than the stated deadlines but there is no guarantee we will be able to process and originate the loan before the end of the term.

Read the instructions in the online financial aid portal carefully:

• Report any changes in your enrollment plans, and
• Report any outside resources you will be receiving that are not already displayed.

If you accept a Federal Unsubsidized Direct Loan you need to:

• Complete a Direct Loan Master Promissory Note (MPN) at www.studentloans.gov (unless you received a Direct Loan within the past 12 months).
• Complete Direct Loan Entrance Counseling at www.studentloans.gov (unless you completed this requirement in a previous year). You may choose the combined Direct Loan / Grad PLUS option.

If at any time you choose to request a Federal Direct Graduate PLUS Loan you need to:

Approximately one week before the start of instruction each semester, your financial aid awards (excluding work-study earnings and some private loans) will be disbursed. In order for your financial aid to disburse, you must meet these requirements:

• You have accepted one or more awards.
• You have signed any required Master Promissory Notes.
• You have completed an entrance interview if you are a first-time borrower.
• Your financial aid file is complete. Review your Tasks in the My Finances View Awards section of your Cal Central account for information about any missing documents.
• You are enrolled in at least 6 units.
• You have cleared any registration holds.
• You are making satisfactory academic progress.
• You are not over awarded.
• Your program's start date aligns with the start date of the standard academic calendar

Your financial aid funds will be applied first to University charges. Any excess aid that remains after the charges on your account have been paid in full will be refunded to you. You are strongly encouraged to enroll in Direct Deposit (a.k.a. Electronic Funds Transfer [EFT] ), authorizing the direct deposit of financial aid refunds into your bank account. If you do not apply for direct deposit at least 10 business days before the beginning of the enrollment period, your refund will be held at Cal Student Central , 120 Sproul Hall, for pickup. You will receive an email advising you of when your refund is available either via Direct Deposit /EFT or as a paper check ready for pickup.

If you do not meet the eligibility requirements above, you can expect your aid to be delayed. Aid will disburse to your account after you meet all eligibility requirements.

Apply Now for the FY 2025 Sustainability Education Innovation Grants

A new round of Sustainability Education Innovation Grants is now open with proposals due May 15, 2024. These awards will support course transformation using sustainability challenges and the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In FY 2024, 30 grant-funded projects resulted in the design or redesign of more than 40 core, elective, lab, and capstone offerings in 16 schools and all six colleges at Georgia Tech. These grants advance progress toward the ambitious sustainability education goals outlined in the Sustainability Next plan , Georgia Tech’s Strategic Plan, and the Institute’s new Climate Action Plan . The new grantees will be announced in June and will have many opportunities to learn from other faculty already engaged in teaching with sustainability and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). 

The current Request for Proposals (RFP) invites applicants to include at least one of the following four areas within sustainability education: 1) community-engaged teaching and learning; 2) cross-disciplinary or transdisciplinary learning; 3) experiential learning tied to Georgia Tech’s Living Campus initiative; and/or 4) sustainability education research that evaluates the impact of sustainability course integration on student learning. Project budgets up to $10,000 will be considered and funds may be used for course release, student support, materials, course or conference travel, and other expenses allowable with state funds.

Grant winners will have opportunities to learn from peers across many disciplines who have experience redesigning courses to incorporate sustainability and the SDGs. More than 30 faculty members participated in a Community of Practice on Transformative Teaching with the SDGs during the 2023-24 academic year, meeting regularly to exchange feedback, share resources, and develop strategies for engaging more faculty and students in transformative teaching and learning with sustainability and the SDGs. Members presented an introductory workshop on SDG course integration for instructors, a Pecha Kucha panel highlighting grant-funded projects, and a student SDG scavenger hunt during the March 3-8, 2024, SDG Week activities. The group also collaborated on an interactive workshop at the USG Teaching and Learning Conference in April, helping faculty from other USG institutions get started with transformative sustainability teaching and learning.

6 ways to qualify for student loan forgiveness under biden programs.

President Joe Biden has approved billions of dollars in student loan forgiveness for more than 4.5 million borrowers since taking office, mostly through a patchwork of interrelated reforms and executive actions. The administration also just unveiled a new plan last month that, if enacted, will provide even more relief.

But navigating these programs can be challenging for borrowers. Each federal student loan forgiveness program has its own set of rules and eligibility criteria, many of which overlap with other opportunities. Some forms of loan forgiveness may be automatic, while others require taking certain steps like submitting an application, consolidating loans, changing repayment plans, or even going to court.

Certain characteristics of the borrower or their student debt could be a basis for student loan forgiveness, possibly under a few different programs. Here are some of the big ones.

Time Spent In Repayment Can Qualify For Student Loan Forgiveness

Borrowers who have been in repayment for a very long time can potentially qualify for student loan forgiveness under several initiatives.

President Biden’s one-time IDR Account Adjustment program can credit borrowers retroactively with time toward their 20-year or 25-year loan forgiveness term under income-driven repayment plans. Borrowers who receive enough credit to reach the milestone for forgiveness would get an automatic discharge, while other borrowers would need to switch to an IDR plan to make continuing progress. Those who have Direct federal student loans and government-held FFEL loans can receive the benefits of the account adjustment automatically. But borrowers with commercially-owned FFEL loans had to apply to consolidate those loans via the federal Direct consolidation program by the April 30, 2024 deadline.

Borrowers who first entered repayment a long time ago may have another shot at loan forgiveness through Biden’s new mass debt cancellation plan that is currently in the works. The Education Department released draft regulations for this proposed new program last month. This new plan would discharge the federal student debt for undergraduate borrowers who first entered repayment at least 20 years ago, and for graduate school borrowers who entered repayment at least 25 years ago. The new plan is not available yet, but could launch by the fall.

In some cases, borrowers can receive student loan forgiveness sooner than 20 or 25 years. Under Biden’s new SAVE plan, borrowers can qualify for a discharge in as little as 10 years if they originally borrowed $12,000 or less in federal student loans. That timeline increases by one year for every additional $1,000 borrowed. To qualify, borrowers must switch to the SAVE plan if they aren’t already enrolled.

Employment Can Qualify For Student Loan Forgiveness

A borrower’s job can also be a basis for student loan forgiveness, although this typically is in conjunction with time spent in repayment, as well.

Employees of nonprofit or government organizations can potentially qualify for Public Service Loan Forgiveness. The PSLF program can lead to loan forgiveness after 120 qualifying payments, the equivalent of 10 years. The Biden administration implemented two significant “waivers” — the Limited PSLF Waiver, and the IDR Account Adjustment — which temporarily relaxed PSLF rules and expanded access to debt relief. Going forward, PSLF is reverting to stricter rules, although new flexibilities for religious workers, adjunct faculty, and certain contractors are providing new pathways to loan forgiveness under the program.

Separately, the Teacher Loan Forgiveness program can provide up to $17,500 in debt relief after five years of meeting the program’s strict requirements while teaching at an eligible Title I institution. Federal Perkins loans can be eligible for profession-specific cancellation as well. However, for most borrowers with high federal student debt burdens, PSLF will often be the more valuable program to pursue.

Interest Accrual Could Be Basis For Student Loan Forgiveness Under New Biden Plan

Excessive interest accrual or capitalization is not currently a basis for student loan forgiveness under existing programs. However, Biden hopes to change this with his new debt relief initiative.

Biden’s new plan would eliminate up to $20,000 in interest for all borrowers who have experienced interest accrual or capitalization since entering repayment. Borrowers could receive even higher amounts of loan forgiveness if they are enrolled in the SAVE plan or other IDR programs and make $120,000 or less per year individually or if they file taxes as married filing separately, or $240,000 or less per year if they are married and file joint tax returns.

The new student loan forgiveness plan is not available yet. “We will publish a series of proposed rules around these plans in the coming months,” says the Education Department. “Once we have final rules, we will work to implement them as quickly as possible.” Officials have indicated that implementation is expected in the fall.

Hardship As Basis For Student Loan Forgiveness

Currently, there is no administrative discharge or loan forgiveness option for borrowers experiencing hardship. However, borrowers pursuing a bankruptcy discharge of their government-owned federal student debt do have a pathway to relief. New joint policy guidance between the Education Department and the Justice Department allows borrowers to demonstrate that they have an “undue hardship” within the meaning of the bankruptcy code by completing a detailed financial attestation form. This can streamline the process for requesting bankruptcy relief for federal student loan debt, which has historically been an exceptionally challenging process with dismal success rates. Borrowers should consult with a bankruptcy attorney for further guidance.

In addition, Biden’s new student loan forgiveness plan will also provide a path to relief based on hardship. The plan would “cancel student debt for borrowers experiencing hardship in their lives that prevent them from paying back their loans now or in the future,” says the Education Department. Officials have not published updated proposed regulations for this prong of relief. But the department is expected to unveil several factors that could suggest hardship such as age, low income, high expenses or debts, and eligibility for other means-tested government relief.

“Borrowers predicted to fall into default on their student loans would be eligible for automatic relief under the Biden Administration’s proposal,” says the department. “Borrowers experiencing other cost burdens could also receive relief through an application process.” Again, the application likely will not be available until this fall.

Disability As Basis For Student Loan Forgiveness

Having a significant medical impairment is already a basis for student loan forgiveness under the Total and Permanent Disability discharge program. The Biden administration recently updated the TPD discharge application to reflect new regulations that went into effect last summer. These new rules expand eligibility for the program, making it easier for borrowers to qualify. They also remove administrative barriers and automate relief in certain cases.

Separately, a borrower’s medical condition and disability status is also expected to be a possible basis for hardship student loan forgiveness under Biden’s new mass debt relief plan.

Attendance At Certain Schools Can Be Grounds For Student Loan Forgiveness

Borrowers who attended certain schools could also receive student loan forgiveness. And there are multiple pathways for this:

• Borrowers may qualify for automatic group relief — without having to request or apply for it — if they attended certain national for-profit college chains. These include Corinthian Colleges, ITT Technical Institutes, and, most recently, the Art Institutes .
• Those who submitted Borrower Defense to Repayment applications by June 2022 and attended one of several dozen approved institutions could get relief under the Sweet v. Cardona settlement.
• Borrowers not covered by automatic group discharges or the Sweet v. Cardona settlement can apply for loan forgiveness through the Borrower Defense to Repayment or Closed School Discharge programs.
• Biden’s new loan forgiveness plan will also provide for automatic discharges for borrowers who attended institutions that lost eligibility to participate in the federal student aid program due to poor student outcomes.
