How to Delete a Submission on Canvas: A Step-by-Step Guide

Canvas is a widely used learning management system that allows students and instructors to interact and manage assignments. However, there may be instances when a student submits an assignment in the wrong place or provides an incomplete/wrong submission. In such cases, it becomes necessary to delete the submission. Canvas does not provide a direct option to delete a student’s submission for an assignment. However, there are workarounds that can be used to achieve this goal. Let’s dive into the step-by-step process.

To begin, log in to your Canvas account and navigate to the course where the assignment is located. Look for the “Assignments” tab or link in the course navigation menu and click on it.

In the “Assignments” section, find the specific assignment for which you want to delete a submission. Scroll through the list and locate the assignment. If needed, you can use the search or filter options to quickly find the assignment.

Once you have located the assignment, look for the options icon associated with it. The options icon is usually represented by three dots or lines. Click on the options icon to reveal a dropdown menu.

From the dropdown menu, select the “Delete” option. Please note that this action will not delete the entire assignment but only the specific submission made by the student.

After deleting the submission, it is crucial to communicate the change to the student. Reach out to them through Canvas messaging or any other preferred communication method to inform them of the deletion and provide any necessary instructions or directions for resubmission.

Do You Know Students Can Submit Late Assignments Unless You Use an “Until” Date?

Why Does Canvas Let My Students Submit Their Work After the Due Date?

The guiding principle behind this default ability is that decisions about whether or not an assignment should be accepted late is an instructor’s prerogative, so rather than deciding for the instructor that students cannot submit their work after the due date, Canvas leaves the choice about whether or not to accept the late submission up to the instructor, marking it “late” without taking any further action.

If Canvas were to automatically block students from submitting after a due date, allowing extensions would require working with complex settings, and intervention from a Canvas support specialist would most likely be necessary. By accepting late submissions by default, Canvas obviates this need and defers to the instructor’s judgment, letting them manage late submissions according to their personal policies.

Thus if you gave a student an extension, the submission would be marked “late,” but you would be able to grade the submission according to the grading terns you defined for the extension (full credit, partial credit, etc.). If you did not give a student an extension but they submit late anyway, you can decide how or if to grade the submission according to your lateness policy.

I Don’t Give Extensions. Can I Stop Late Submissions?

Yes, in addition to a due date, you can use an “Until” availability date to completely cut off student access to assignments after a certain date, including the ability to submit an assignment.

Everything a student needs to know about doing their Kami assignments in Canvas

How to do Kami Assignments as a Student

1. open your kami assignment.

Go into the Assignments tab in one of your Courses , then click the Kami assignment you'd like to work on. After selecting your Assignment, it should directly open in Kami.

2. Load and annotate your Kami Assignment

Once your file has loaded in Kami, you should see all the Kami tools on the left to work on your Kami Assignment. Depending on what your teacher has set on the Kami assignment settings, the assignment could open in Kami while still inside Canvas (like the image below), or it could open in Kami on a new tab separately.

3. Turn in your Kami Assignment

Once you're done with your work, you can then turn it in directly from Kami to Canvas by clicking the Submit button at the top right corner of Kami. Wait for it to finish submitting before you close your window. The button will then change to Unsubmit, indicating that the Kami Assignment has been successfully turned in. If you forgot something and want to edit your Kami assignment again, simply click the Unsubmit button, edit your work, and then click the Submit button.

Resubmiting a paper

Some assignments may allow students the ability to overwrite their previous submissions until an assignment's due date. This option is activated by an instructor on an assignment-by-assignment basis. If resubmissions are not enabled, your instructor must manually delete your previous submission to allow you to submit a second time.

If resubmissions have been enabled or an instructor has deleted your first submission, resubmitting a paper is handled in an identical manner as a first-time submission.

Realize, remove or delete assignment for a single student jul 29, 2022 • knowledge, information.

Realize can not delete an entire class assignment but it does have the ability to remove an assignment for a single student. If you proceed with the steps below you will not be able to recover the data for the student with that assignment. We recommend hiding the assignment unless you have no use for the data you are about to remove for the student.

Remove an Assignment for a Single User

• Select the Classes option.
• Locate the class name and click the associated Assignments option.
• Click on the tab titled Assignments by student .
• Locate the student's name and click on it.
• Locate the assignment you wish to remove from the left side menu.
• Once you find the assignment you wish to remove for this individual student, click the 3 dot menu icon to the upper right and then choose Remove Student.
• A Remove Student confirmation dialog will be given, click Remove to remove the student from the assignment.

• Once you remove, any assignment data for the specific issue is gone for the student and can't be recovered.

✔️Put in Zeros for Missing Assignments

If students are missing assignments, you will need to put in zeros for those missing assignments. The easiest way to do this is to open your Grade Center and look for empty grade cells.

Some instructors may also use the  Missing Submission Policy  in the gradebook settings.

✔️Remove any Extra Categories and/or Columns

• Review the Assignments tab for any extra categories you didn’t use in your course. A common one is the category of “Imported Assignments” that gets created whenever assignments are imported from another course.
• Review all the Gradebook columns and make sure there aren’t any extra columns cluttering up your gradebook. These could be from duplicate assignments or assignments that were created but never published.  You can delete these from the Assignments tab.

✔️Final Grades Go in the Faculty Center

You may have used the Canvas grade book for calculations, but final grades need to be submitted to the Chapman Faculty Center .  For more instructions on how to submit grades, visit the Training Guides for the Faculty Center.  The Final Grading Reference Guide shows step-by-step directions for the grading process in the FacultyCenter.Chapman.edu .

Select the drop-down for Reference Guides . Click on Final Grading .

✔️Plan for Any Students Needing to Resolve Incompletes

If you have a course that needs to stay open beyond the end-of-term date to resolve an incomplete grade,  please submit a request form .

✔️Backup/Download Course Content

It is a good practice to backup or copy your course materials at the end of the semester by exporting your Canvas course. You may share your exported course with another Canvas user, upload to another institution’s account at a later date, or retain the course as a backup on your local computer. For instructions on how to do this, see  How do I export a Canvas course?

Note:  Exports are packaged as IMSCC ZIP files, which can only be opened by programs that support Common Cartridge files. You may also change the extension from .imscc to .zip and treat it like any other .zip file.

✔️Unpublish YuJa Videos Channels

Did you know that even after your course has ended, your students can still access your Channel videos through the YuJa platform? To prevent this, it’s important to unpublish your videos. ✔️Organize your Dashboard and Courses

The end of term is a good time to  organize your Canvas Dashboard . You may unfavorite (“unstar”) any published courses you don’t want on your Dashboard anymore. A concluded course that has not been favorited will appear in the “Past Enrollments” list (Courses>All Courses).

Note: Concluded courses cannot be favorited (“starred”).
