I have seen Ju for private Mandarin lessons several times a week. I was out of the country for 4 months, so I am getting ready to start my class with her again. I studied Mandarin at university, and I lived in China for 3 years in my early 20s. I have had quite a few Mandarin teachers and tutors over the years. Ju is a stand out among my many Mandarin tutors because she is effective, clever, thoughtful, and deliberate. She is skillful at honing in on my distinctive flaws and helping me to improve. It's really quite remarkable. She knows my exact individual mistakes that I am prone to making, like dropping a 'le' at the end of sentences, and she corrects me in a fun and humorous way, so I never feel embarrassed or shy. I am quite an introverted person, I do not like speaking much in public, that is why it's so impressive that Ju can get me to speak Mandarin, correct me, and keep me excited about learning. I'm studying Mandarin privately with Ju because I am preparing for the HSK exam. She has a lot of experience in preparing adult students for this exam, and she has been of great help to me. She listens to me when I tell her what my goals are for learning Mandarin, and she thoughtfully helps prepare me to accomplish my goals. No matter your level of Mandarin, please seek out Ju if you are serious about improving your Chinese.
I've been studying with Juju for a few months now and have had a great experience. As an ABC (American born chinese) who grew up in a Chinese speaking household, I have good intuition on tones and pronunciation, but am very weak on grammar and proper sentence structure. Within our first class, Ju immediately identified my areas of improvement and has worked hard to help me build a strong foundation in grammar fundamentals. As a teacher, Ju is incredibly organized and always comes prepared for each class with a lesson plan and feedback on my homework from last time. She writes out complex concepts on the whiteboard and is very clear in her instruction. Ju also uses audio transcripts and a mobile app (Skritter) to help me with my listening comprehension and reading/writing. As a person, Ju is friendly and professional. She is an easy person to chat with, and over the course of our lessons, we've talked about everything from our jobs, to our favorite Chinese food, to living in NYC. I've had a great time learning Chinese from Ju and highly recommend her for anyone looking for a personable, well-organized, and extremely knowledgeable teacher.
Never in my wildest dreams would I have imagined that in a few short weeks I would be able to communicate in Mandarin Chinese with my colleagues in China. I grew up speaking English, and studied French and Portuguese in throughout grade school and college. I've always been comfortable with the idea of learning a new language, but I have to admit that Chinese seemed simply out of reach. The sounds, the characters.. just too different. And Chinese is always on the top of the difficulty lists you see online about learning languages coming from English as your native language. Very intimidating. In recent years, my work has been taking me to China more and more, and at this point, I'm there fairly regularly. Like many people, I have a high level of discomfort not being able to speak a single syllable of the local language while traveling. I wanted to learn at least some basic Mandarin Chinese for my own comfort, my own safety, and frankly, as a show of respect to my Chinese colleagues and business associates--all of whom speak at least some of my native language. I found Ju's class here on Yelp. Her class is conveniently located in midtown NY and it's very affordable, so it was a no brainer to at least try. She offers a series of classes, so I signed up for the first. I'm now in the second series. In the first class I made a game-changing discovery--Pinyin--a sort of phonetic roman-alphabet-based system of writing Chinese. I had no idea this existed and I knew immediately I had a fighting chance! I've had some great foreigner language teachers in the past and Ju is right up there with the best of them. Ju has taken all of the mystery out of learning Chinese for me, and has left me with a tremendous sense of accomplishment as I learn more and more each week and practice with my Chinese colleagues during our Skype meetings. Ju's classes are very well organized and planned, but flexible enough to stop and focus on a particular lesson that might need a little extra attention. And ATTENTION is another great aspect of Ju's class. With the small class size, I am constantly speaking Chinese in front of Ju, which gives her the chance to continually help my speaking skills and, as she politely says, make a "tone adjustments". The pace seems perfect as in the beginning it was slow enough as to not discourange me, but is now fast enough to keep me fully engaged and interested. The homework materials, both written and audio files, are super helpful. I listen to her recorded dialogues on my iPhone while walking to work, and that has helped me retain vocabulary and gives me an opportunity to speak along with her and practice my pronunciation. Lastly, a small, but important point is that I take Ju's class at night--after a long and usually pretty exhausting day at work. The positive and pleasant atmosphere in Ju's class along with her energy, patience and cheery demeanor really make the class seem more like a break from work, rather than another thing I "have to" do in my long day. I look forward to it each week. I'm really happy and proud of my progress so far. I plan to complete Ju's full course offering, and I'm especially looking forward to practicing newly acquired Mandarin Chinese skills during my next business trip to China later this year.
I took the introductory class with Ju and found it to be very enjoyable yet practical. I think I learned more conversational Chinese in 10 weekly classes than I did in my full credit college Chinese class. Ju is a great instructor and even arranged an extracurricular activity for us. Highly recommended for both new learners and those with some background.
Really enjoyed Ju's class. It was just the perfect balance for me. I was with the program for about 1 year. Unfortunately there were schedule conflicts that didn't work for me.
After living in China and having failed to learn the language, I decided to seek out a Chinese language teacher. After a lot of searching I found Julianne. Julianne is a great teacher, she is easily approachable and, as we go, she explains the Chinese language really clearly. My weak point is really spoken Chinese. Thankfully Ms. Zhu is incredibly patient and is quick to suggest strategies for when I'm totally screwing things up. Learning Chinese, as with anything, requires a great deal of commitment. One of the biggest problems for me is finding time to refresh my memory of the Chinese that I am studying. Julianne does assign a healthy dose of homework, so be prepared for that. A good teacher in one to one circumstances. I like her concern towards my learning and I like that she has an ongoing interest in languages other than Chinese.
For anyone that is looking into Mandarin lessons for a small office, I cannot recommend Ju's Mandarin class enough. We came into her class with very specific requirements for instructing a small team of people that travel frequently and previously had no experience with the language. I'm happy to say she has exceeded out expectations, has kept us engaged, and has always made herself available to help people catch up when they've had to miss a lesson. Her approach is versatile and great for a small office environment, going beyond the text that she provides and focusing on realistic goals. I've done a lot of research into classes for my colleagues and I to take, but none seemed to invest as much time and understanding in their students in the same manner that Ju does. She is easily the best fit for our office in Singapore and I'm confident you won't be disappointed if you choose her as your instructor.
As an ABC (American-born Chinese), one of my biggest regrets in life was not learning how to speak Mandarin when I was younger. My parents spoke to me in Chinese, so I can understand conversationally, but I never really developed the tongue or grammar to speak back. Because Mandarin is such a complex language, I think it's crucial for Mandarin instructors to have a hands-on approach to teaching. Ju's class is perfect because of the small class sizes (there's only 4 of us in my session) so it feels almost like private tutoring. The structure of her program keep the classes interesting, as we do a mix of listening, speaking, and writing (in pinyin for now, but moving onto characters in future sessions!) I'm so busy with work during the week that I wasn't sure how I'd be able to handle a language class, but I was actually surprised about how much I could learn in just one hour-and-15 minute session per a week! I remember languages classes in high school moved at an overwhelming pace, but Ju's class is really tailored to busy people who want to actually learn/absorb the language. We have homework each week, but it's very manageable and definitely helpful. Looking forward to continuing with Ju!
I've worked with Ju for about 4 months now and my mandarin has significantly improved. Each class is rigorous, on point, and effective. I previously took mandarin for about 6 years in high school/middle school, but the pace of learning with Ju has outweighed those 6 years. She has a good path to learning mandarin with the books. Some exercises seem trivial, but in reality, they're very effective. When things start to seem easy with her, it's because I have actually learned what is going on. I'd recommended her for 1:1 tutoring for anybody looking for a personal challenging pace.
I've wanted to learn Mandarin for a long time, and after trying a few online solutions on and off, I finally decided to commit to in-person instruction with a regular schedule, and contacted Ju. The structure Ju brings to the educational process has been exactly what I needed. We meet for 1.5 hours once a week, with a manageable but effective amount of homework in-between to keep the lessons fresh in my mind. Ju's instruction is thorough and really helps build up an understanding of the fundamentals, as well as the nuances, of a new language in a way so that things actually get internalized rather than relying on rote memorization. She actively learns new languages herself, and it's easy to see that she is familiar with what it's like to be the one on the other side of the table learning. The pace has been brisk, manageable, and rewarding. After only a half dozen lessons, I already had made more progress than all the previous false starts I had put together, and I really felt it all coming together as a whole (which is not easy to get from a less structured curriculum/instruction). It can be difficult to maintain a realistic and rewarding learning pace while keeping a full schedule with work, etc. but Ju made every effort and worked with me to accommodate my schedule. If you're serious about learning Mandarin, Ju is the teacher to go to.
