Freight on urban public transportation: A systematic literature review

Public transportation offers a promising opportunity for freight transportation in urban areas. Through the sharing of infrastructure, vehicles, or even space inside wagons, synergies can be realized which can lead to a more efficient and environmentally-friendly transportation of goods in cities. This paper conducts a comprehensive investigation of the state-of-the-art of freight on public transportation by means of a systematic literature review. The authors start by giving an overview of the various ways in which freight on public transportation can be realized. Then They analyze the identified references, classified into qualitative and quantitative approaches, regarding methodology, mode of transportation, shared aspects, underlying network, and utilized data. The authors find that freight on urban public transportation is a highly dynamic and diverse research field. Finally, they describe opportunities and barriers for freight on public transportation and identify the main fields for future research, among others the further inclusion of external costs and the more frequent application of stochastic and real-time data.

International Journal of Physical Distribution & Logistics Management

ISSN : 0960-0035

Article publication date: 14 June 2011

The purpose of this paper is to classify research on information and communication technology (ICT) for logistics and freight transportation on the basis of the main themes and methods and proposes directions for future research.

Design/methodology/approach

The review is based on 44 papers published from 1994 to 2009 in international peer‐reviewed journals. The academic papers are analysed and classified according to the research methodology adopted and the themes addressed.

While there are many contributions taking the “public transportation” perspective (i.e. the viewpoint of public stakeholders), papers focussing on the “private transportation” perspective (i.e. the viewpoint of the private companies offering logistics and transportation services) are fewer and relatively more recent. Additionally, even though in recent years researchers have also started to examine the decision‐making process of ICT adoption, many themes are under‐represented in literature, such as the subject of integration among different application types, empirical research on ICT adoption and the role of technology providers in the adoption process. As far as the methodology is concerned, the review revealed that many of the papers examined are either conceptual papers or empirical studies (i.e. mostly based on surveys, or else on case studies or interviews), while simulation and modelling are rarely present.

Research limitations/implications

While efforts were made to be all‐inclusive, significant research efforts may have been inadvertently omitted. However, the authors believe that this review is an accurate representation of the body of research on ICT for logistics and transportation companies published during the specified timeframe, and feel that confidence may be placed on the resulting assessments.

Originality/value

The paper offers a guide for the review of previous research on this topic and identifies the most important issues that need to be addressed in future research.

  • Freight transportation
  • Intelligent transportation systems

The negative externalities of freight transport have caught the attention of scholars and practitioners to study sustainable freight transportation. Past studies have reviewed sustainable logistics from varying perspectives, but the rail mode–specific sustainable logistics has not been thoroughly reviewed. This sets the motivation to review existing research on sustainable rail freight transportation (SRFT). A science mapping approach was used to develop and visualize bibliographic networks of 378 articles published between 2001 and 2022 and indexed in the Scopus database. Four scientometric analysis techniques, namely journal co-citations; countries/organizations/authors co-authorship; document co-citations; and keywords co-occurrence, were employed in the VOSviewer software to reveal conceptual structure, social structure, and influential themes of the SRFT domain. Based on the results, the SRFT knowledge was categorized into six thematic branches (31 sub-branches), namely intermodal transportation for decarbonization; green policies, risk, and energy assessment research; savings in externalities for a sustainable future; decision-making with environmental and economic considerations; case studies and applications in SRFT research; and technological advancements towards sustainability. Finally, future research directions were proposed in the form of research questions. This systematic literature review will facilitate the researchers, practitioners, and policymakers to understand the status quo, existing research gaps, and emerging research topics in the SRFT research domain. This study is restricted to research articles and review articles published in English and indexed in the Scopus database.

INVESTING IN AMERICA: Brent Spence Bridge Project Marks New Milestone as President Biden’s Infrastructure Decade Kicks into Gear

WASHINGTON, DC – In a major milestone for the Brent Spence Bridge project between Cincinnati, Ohio, and Covington, Kentucky, the U.S. Department of Transportation announced that the project’s sponsors have cleared the comprehensive environmental review, setting the stage for a groundbreaking in the coming months. The Biden-Harris Administration has invested $1.6 billion from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law toward the Brent Spence Bridge, a major transportation corridor that sees over $1 billion in freight move across it every day. The project will upgrade the existing bridge and build a new additional bridge dedicated to interstate drivers to improve traffic along a critical freight route that runs from Canada to Florida.

“Thanks to President Biden’s leadership, infrastructure improvements that have long been a dream are finally happening across America — and that includes massive projects like the new Brent Spence Bridge,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg . “This bridge carries over $1 billion in freight and over 160,000 drivers every day, and today we are proud to mark the completion of the environmental review for the new Brent Spence Bridge, enabling the project to move to construction in the coming months. After years of talk about major infrastructure funding for America, President Biden got it done.”

“This is a big step in supporting the President’s commitment to rebuilding our nation’s infrastructure,” said Federal Highway Administrator Shailen Bhatt . “This bridge is a vital connector of goods to thousands of people in Kentucky and Ohio, and the investment in the Brent Spence Bridge will ensure the surrounding communities, and communities across the entire country, benefit from these improvements for decades to come.”

President Biden’s five-year, $1.2 trillion infrastructure law is helping communities in the coming months and years break ground on projects to rebuild our roads and bridges, improve our ports and airports, partner with states to create a national EV charging network with 500,000 chargers by 2030, deliver clean and safe water, clean up legacy pollution, expand access to high-speed internet, and build a clean energy economy. Through his Investing in America agenda, President Biden is delivering an “Infrastructure Decade” that is unlocking access to economic opportunity, creating good-paying jobs, boosting domestic manufacturing, and growing America’s economy from the middle up and bottom out – not the top-down.
