Quick Guide:Dissertations

Use the following links in this order to search for available dissertations and masters theses (full text online, in our collections, for purchase in print or available for Interlibrary Loan ).

  • UF Libraries Catalog Check our library holdings; we may own a copy of the thesis or dissertation you need.

Open Access

  • ProQuest Dissertations & Theses Global This database contains most US & Canadian dissertations, and is fast increasing its global coverage. Retrospective digitization is ongoing; UF subscribes to all available full text online. Any titles in print only must be purchased or borrowed via ILL.
  • Dissertations and Theses (WorldCat Discovery) This link opens in a new window A comprehensive database of major academic and some small, specialized US library catalogs. Each institution's own dissertations and those they've collected from others will be listed, but not necessarily available for loan. Check the WorldCat main catalog to see if the title you want is available for Interlibrary Loan and provide ILL with the Accession Number in the comments box to expedite their search process. Consult with your librarian if you need assistance.
  • Center for Research Libraries CRL with its component membership organizations is an important repository of specialized academic library materials. As a member institution, UF Libraries' patrons may borrow from their extensive manuscript archives, newspapers and foreign dissertations. more... less... CRL has as part of its mission to collect foreign dissertations. Previously, these were not cataloged but available on request, however, the policy has changed and these are now a priority to catalog and digitize. Request the assistance of your librarian to properly complete an ILL request for material at CRL.
  • Links to other universities' ETD pages A collection of links to other universities' web pages with information and access to their Electronic Theses and Dissertations.
  • Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations An international open collection of links to available electronic theses and dissertations.

Accessing Dissertations

Since about 2000, US & Canadian universities have required most current or new dissertations to be submitted in electronic format. A few students may still submit in print format (if they entered their graduate program prior to the new requirement). Some authors may also restrict external access for a limited time, for example if patent issues are a concern. At UF, we're retrospectively digitizing print dissertations, but copyright requires we secure author permission (or that of the heirs). Before looking any further, check the Library catalog to see if we have the title of interest. See the UF Electronic Theses and Dissertations and the Finding Dissertations & Theses pages for further information.

For the US & Canada, ProQuest maintains a database of all dissertations and a few "selected" masters theses. This is considered a form of publication. For years a few exceptions existed, as may still be the case for older titles at a very few institutions (Harvard University, MIT and the University of Chicago were long time holdouts). UF faculty, staff and students may download full text of over 600,000 theses from ProQuest Dissertations & Theses: Full Text . Full text is available for approximately one third of the theses indexed in the database. Check WorldCat Dissertations if you don't find the title of interest there (includes better Masters thesis coverage than ProQuest). Also, the Center for Research Libraries maintains an archive of dissertations produced outside of the US & Canada, but it is not comprehensive.

If you haven't found the title of interest in these sources, the next step is to search the degree-granting institution's library catalog for circulating print copies. Universities maintain one official copy as an archival record of the institution; it can't be loaned via ILL or charged out. A circulating copy may be available, but these can be stolen, lost or damaged, etc. When they go missing, they're usually not replaced.

European institutions may maintain a copy of dissertations only in departmental or college libraries, rather than the institutional library. The same is often true of master's theses at US institutions. Sometimes these are treated as manuscripts, so they can only be copied with the authors (or the author's heirs' permission). In the worst cases, the only way to access some exceptionally difficult theses and dissertations is to travel to the originating institution and sign permission forms yourself.

Trends in Mass Communication Research in Nigeria: A Guerrilla Warfare Dissertation

Profile image of Research and Statistics Center

2014, Asia Pacific Journal of Multidisciplinary Research

Investigated are the research trends in mass communication programs in Nigerian universities. The focus is on the methodological orientation of the lecturers who teach mass communication research method courses. Course outlines were sourced from five typical but purposively selected universities where mass communication is taught. The contents of the course outlines and the comments made by the lecturers who designed them were subjected to Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). The result shows that the methodological orientation of lecturers who teach research method courses in mass communication programs gravitate almost exclusively towards the quantitative research method. Conclusion is that either bad faith or ignorance or a combination of the two is responsible for preventing Nigerian universities from joining the community of global universities where methodological pluralism in social research has been the norm.

Research writing and presentation are academic activities that require serious and adequate attention among scholars in Nigeria. Research is a key area of study in the University system. There is need to establish the dominant methodology adopted by students in Nigerian Universities with a view to finding out whether there is dynamism in what the students are taught in institutions of higher learning in the area of research. Against this backdrop, this study set to ascertain the dominant research methodology adopted by Mass Communication students in two Universities in South East. The study adopted content analysis research method in analyzing the manifest contents of B.Sc. project works completed and submitted to Mass Communication departments of select Universities. The study was anchored on individual difference theory of Mass Communication which provided empirical explanation to the reasons for adoption of different research methodologies among students. This study provides empirical answers to such research questions as: what are the dominant methodologies; sampling techniques, sample size determination formulae, and the dominant data presentation techniques among Mass Communication students in select universities. Findings revealed that survey research method and purposive sampling dominates the methodology and sampling techniques while frequency table and Taro Yamani's sample size determination formulae dominates the data presentation technique and means of sample size selection. The researchers concluded that there is lack of diversification in teaching research methods and other elements and recommended that the students as well their lecturers should strive to be alive to their duties when it concerns research.

Research is an activity of knowing, with the core objectives of to find solutions to problems and find answers to questions through the application of a reliable and consistent procedure. To be reliable and consistent, research method must be accessible, transparent, systematic, verifiable, objective, transferable, cumulative and rigorous. It is useful for research method to meet the above stated criteria because as a public activity, research procedure must be clear in structure, in process and in outcome-such as the processes must be opened to scrutiny by others. Research in Communication and media studies is an ongoing activity and it is constantly evolving and moving from questions about the use of the medium to the questions of technological improvement of the medium to profitably serve the users of the medium, who are also constantly changing in terms of demographics, taste, orientation and values. The focus of this paper therefore, is to determine the research methodology which is most commonly used in communication and media studies. It is also to examine the influence of single and multiple authors in the choice of either the qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods. Employing descriptive quantitative design, the authors used content analysis as a tool to code and analysed the data set. Published scholarly articles available on Google scholar between 2020 and 2021 constituted the study population. Taro Yamane formula was used to draw a sample size of 392 from a population of 21,000. Findings showed that scholars

Mass Communication curricula are expected to be broad, to engender inquiry, analytic reasoning, critical thinking, and should be multidisciplinary in nature so as to arm students with problem-solving skills, and multi-cultural knowledge, values and skills essential for professional practice. This paper investigated how mass communication is being taught in some tertiary institutions in Mid-West (Delta and Edo States), Nigeria, to find out if it aligns with the requirements of the National Universities Commission`s Benchmark Minimum Academic Standards (BMAS). The survey research method was adopted, and questionnaire was used to collect data. The study was anchored on the Reflective Practice Theory. It was discovered, among other findings, that mass communication students are exposed to e-learning and modern technology innovation. The study concluded that Mass Communication curricula should be responsive and educative in preparing students whose future work and careers depend on how they successfully align what they have learned in school, and the skills they exhibit in the field after graduation. The recommendations made include, that the Mass Communication curricula be reviewed to reflect current realities in the field of journalism, that more emphasis should be placed on the practical aspects of all the courses being taught, especially Newspaper production, Magazine production, Photojournalism, Broadcast productions etc., and that students should be trained with the right facilities so that they can be well-equipped to deliver professionally in future, and not drag the profession to disrepute.

Since independence in 1960, there has been a steady growth of mass communication education in Nigeria. However, recent studies have shown that a significant number of graduates in the discipline do not possess the requisite skills for employment. This paper reiterates the issue. It describes the current status of mass communication education in the country, with a focus on the challenges confronting it, and suggests the way forward. The discourse shows that the number of mass communication graduates continues to grow but quality is declining. The challenges identified are the inadequacy of modern journalism facilities, absence of good journalism institutes, the doctorate syndrome, inadequate curricula, few hands-on opportunities for teaching and learning, poor funding, and negative students " attitude toward research. The authorities and stakeholders must address these issues to enable the country keep up with the best global practices.

The book, introduction to mass communication principles and practices, tend to give a general overview of the media industry paying strict attention to the Nigerian mass media. The book, initiated by Des Wilson, is written by different scholars in the mass communication and communication art profession. Wilson says the book is “… a project arising from the need of the young Department of Mass Communication at Delta State University to assert its Nigerianness”. The book tries to reach out to students as well as scholars, treating the history of the Nigerian mass Media, development communication, conflict management issues, broadcasting, advertising, legal issues in the Nigerian mass media, writing and community relations.

A major feature of any progress-prone human setting is the capacity to reflect on its acts. Reflection entails retrospectively evaluating one's actions with the intent to encourage what works and halt what does not. This paper reflects on vital issues in journalism and mass communication training in Nigeria by highlighting and discussing these issues from the standpoints of where we are and where we could be. Using the Reflective Practice theory as a framework, the author examines issues around such variables as admission processes, quality of faculty, curricula, programme accreditation, internship and training infrastructure. The paper identifies the absence of synergy between journalism academia and the industry as a major gap in the total process of journalism education in Nigeria. The paper is strewn with relevant recommendations that could bring the Nigerian journalism and Mass communication training to the front row and thus enable it to compete effectively with journalism training institutions in advanced climes.

It is no academic rhetoric the place of research in solving the many challenges that plague development efforts across the globe, especially in developing countries. Since independence in 1960, for instance, Nigeria and its people have grappled with diverse social-cultural, economic and political challenges that require continuous articulation of informed policies borne out of tactical researches to address. Regrettably, many Nigerian students find it difficult to undertake academic researches. The result of this difficulty is that many students either indulge in outright plagiarism or engage the services of consultants when asked to undertake a research assignment. This study investigated the interest of Communication students of select tertiary institutions in Rivers State to conduct academic researches. The aim of the study was to investigate the factors that affect the research interest of Communication students. Survey research design was used to study a population of 3,181 fro...

Current thinking in social science research prioritises designing research to solve specific social problems. Besides, robust research findings that proffer practical solutions to specific social problems stand a better chance of appealing to policymakers and actors. Communication research in Nigeria has a history of policy relevance that has aligned with this trend. However, at present the field is characterised by the twin problem of a mono-method approach to research and scholar–policy disengagement. While mono-method research is often weak in providing comprehensive solutions to social problems, scholar–policy disengagement disconnects the research focus from urgent, real-life policy issues. These problems question the social relevance of communication research in today's Nigeria. This chapter, therefore, contributes to the
