The Del E. Webb School of Construction has one of the top construction management doctoral programs in the United States. It provides a rigorous education and teaching environment for students seeking an advanced degree.

The PhD program in construction management requires novel, independent research that broadly contributes to the construction management body of knowledge; transdisciplinary research is often required due to the nature of the topics studied. Students can focus their elective coursework in emphasis areas such as heavy construction, commercial and residential, and specialty construction.

This program may be eligible for an Optional Practical Training extension for up to 36 months. This OPT work authorization term may help international students gain skills and experience in the U.S. Those interested in an OPT extension should review ASU degrees that qualify for the STEM-OPT extension at ASU's International Students and Scholars Center website.

The OPT extension only applies to students on an F-1 visa and does not apply to students completing the degree through ASU Online.

The doctoral program in construction typically requires three to four years of full-time study and research beyond the master's degree. Generally, students are admitted into the doctoral program at or near the completion of their master's degree.

The program requires 84 credit hours post-bachelor's degree or 54 credit hours post-master's degree.

The program consists of:

• core construction courses
• elective courses
• a qualifying examination
• a written and oral comprehensive examination
• admission to candidacy
• successful defense of a dissertation prospectus and complete dissertation

Applicants must fulfill the requirements of both the Graduate College and the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering.

Students who hold a master's degree in a related field from a regionally accredited university or equivalent are eligible to apply for admission to the program. Only exceptional students are admitted without a master's degree. Related fields include construction, civil engineering, architecture and business. At the discretion of the admission committee, students from other disciplines may be eligible as well. In addition, applicants are expected to be competent in construction topics.

Applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.20 (scale is 4.00 = "A") in an applicable master's degree program.

Additional Application Information An applicant whose native language is not English must provide proof of English proficiency regardless of their current residency.

Applicants required to demonstrate English proficiency and seeking a teaching assistantship must demonstrate proficiency in spoken English; a score of 55 or better on the Speaking Proficiency English Assessment Kit or a score of 26 on the speaking portion of the TOEFL is required.

Applicants must take the GRE and have their official scores sent directly to Graduate Admission Services. ASU does not accept the GRE® General Test at home edition. More information regarding how to send official GRE scores can be found on the Graduate Admission Services website.

The personal statement should describe the applicant's career goals and research objectives.

Graduates of the Del E. Webb School of Construction's doctoral program have careers in architecture; engineering and construction industries; academia; and local, state and federal government. The program provides a foundation for those who wish to pursue careers as project managers, project engineers, estimators or schedulers and eventually become principals of firms engaged in the construction of industrial, commercial or residential projects.

The heavy construction emphasis area is preparation for careers related to public works such as highways, airports, bridges, utility systems, and water or waste treatment facilities.

The commercial and residential emphasis area is preparation for careers in real estate development, home production systems, commercial construction, health care and special industrial building projects, and for entrance into the sustainable or green construction market.

The specialty construction emphasis is preparation for organization, leadership and management of the building process at the subcontractor level and for careers as contractors working with mechanical and electrical systems. It also is preparation for careers in management at specialty contracting firms, such as control systems, electrical distribution or heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems for large and complex facilities such as data centers, health care organizations and semiconductor manufacturing plants, as well as commercial facilities.

The graduate degree programs at Del E. Webb School of Construction (DEWSC) offer opportunities for study beyond the bachelor’s degree in one of two areas: construction management or facility management . Studies may lead to the degrees of Master of Science (MS) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). If an admitted student does not have an undergraduate degree in construction or facility management, they may be assigned deficiency courses specific to their specialty area. Students must earn a grade of “B” or better in each deficiency course.

The program curriculum expects that Applicants will have a proficiency in the following subjects:  PreCalc Math, Physics, Strength of Materials, Estimating, Scheduling, Contracts, and Computer Applications in Construction.

If an Applicant does not have adequate proficiency in one or more of the aforementioned subjects, the department and university offers courses in which the student can enroll to gain proficiency while concurrently enrolled in and pursuing courses for the graduate degree program.  If necessary, the program chair will determine which proficiencies are required for each Applicant with consideration of their prior degree(s) and relevant work experience.

Students enrolled in Colorado Technical University’s Doctor of Management program have five concentration options from which to choose, or they can remain in the general track. 4. George Fox University

There are three concentration choices in George Fox University’s Doctor of Business Administration program: accounting, marketing, and management.

Students who pursue management will take a mixture of core business, education and teaching, and management-specific courses and complete a dissertation. They’ll also be required to come to campus a total of six times.

George Fox University is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities.

5. Grand Canyon University

Students in the Doctor of Business Administration program at Grand Canyon University can select the management emphasis to learn about the complexities of management, law in business management, proposing organizational restructuring, and how to address complex issues in management.

Courses include business literature, designing organizational structures, and business economics.

Grand Canyon University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.

6. Liberty University

The 60 credit Doctor of Business Administration in Project Management program at Liberty University can be completed entirely online in about 3 years.

The program is accredited by the ACBSP and features a Christian-centric curriculum. There are no standardized test scores required for admission, and a dissertation isn’t required to graduate.

Liberty University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.

The Ph.D. program in Civil Engineering (specializing in Construction Engineering and Management) is open to outstanding applicants who have demonstrated excellence in their coursework and a capability for independent research. The focus of the doctoral work is on the student’s dissertation research, which must make a significant contribution to knowledge. All admitted Ph.D. students are offered a Fellowship and full financial support for the entire duration of their program.

Controlled and Immersive Environment (CIE) to support construction training.

Apprenticeships are at the heart of the government skills policy and are regarded as a plausible route for youth employment particularly in the construction industry which is a key contributor to the economy. Training in construction trades such as painting and decorating, roofing, and bricklaying, has not yet benefited from the latest developments in information and communication technologies.

This project thus aims to develop a ‘Controlled Immersive Environment’ (CIE) for supporting construction trade apprenticeship training. The CIE is both a controlled and immersive environment which uses state-of-the-art sensing and information technologies in the context of training for construction trade occupations. Within the CIE, trainees perform actual tasks like they currently do in college laboratories, but the environment enables the objective and comprehensive control of both the delivery and output of the apprentice’s work. Simultaneously, the CIE immerses the apprentice within virtual and varying environments, enabling simulation of work conditions closed to those experienced in real construction sites.

The CIE has the potential to enhance the training experience of construction workers, thereby contributing to better performance in terms of health and safety practice, and productivity. The CIE, which is unique in Europe and beyond, is developed as a pilot project in collaboration with ConstructionSkills.

The Doctorate of Philosophy in Civil Engineering with a concentration in Project Management is designed for advanced graduate students with strong academic credentials who seek to focus on a specific research subject in depth. The program requires a minimum of 36 credit hours and combines advanced-level coursework with a doctoral dissertation. The PhD program is residential. UMD does not offer an online PhD program in Project Management.

Doctoral students will have many opportunities to research relevant theoretical and practical problems in major project-based industries including engineering and construction, real estate planning, government services, and others for use in their dissertations.

Every doctoral student is supervised by a designated professor and benefits from his or her personal guidance. A committee of other professors formed with expertise similar to the student’s topic of study will also be available for support.

The PhD program is designed with a foundation of five core courses and electives as needed to support their dissertation. Core courses and PM electives are shown below.

Ph.D. Construction Engineering and Management

The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree is a research-oriented degree requiring a minimum of 64 semester credit hours of approved courses and research beyond the Master of Science (M.S.) degree or Master of Engineering degree [96 credit hours beyond the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree]. The university places limitations on these credit hours in addition to the requirements of the Zachry Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the Construction Engineering and Management program.

Advising Committee

The student must select an Advisory Committee Chair, who will serve as their graduate advisor, from the Department’s CEM graduate faculty listed above.

The chair and the student collaborate in selecting the remainder of the Advisory Committee. The advising committee for the Ph.D. degree in CEM must have a minimum of four members from the Texas A&M graduate faculty (the chair counts as a member). One member must be from outside the civil and environmental engineering department. The remainder of the members must be from within the civil and environmental engineering department, with at least two members being from the Department’s CEM faculty listed above. The chair counts as one of these members.

Departmental Requirements

In addition to fulfilling the University requirements for the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree, a student enrolled in the Civil Engineering graduate program in the area of construction engineering and management must satisfy the following department requirements.

• A minimum of 32 credit hours of graduate level coursework taken through Texas A&M University [a minimum of 24 credit hours if the student already has taken at least another 24 credit hours of graduate course work for the Master of Science (M.S.) or Master of Engineering (M.E.) degree].
• Remaining coursework requirement can be met by 32 hours of CVEN 691 (research credits).

Construction Engineering and Management Requirements

The student must also satisfy the following area requirements and/or recommendations described below:

If you completed a pre-requisite before arriving at Texas A&M University and need it waived, you must bring a copy of your transcript showing the final grade in the course as well as a copy of the course syllabus to the CEM Graduate Advisor. Additional information about the courses taken may be required. This transcript and syllabus will be reviewed to see if indeed they satisfy the requirements, and communicated to the Civil Engineering Graduate Office.

Ph.D. Opportunities for Construction Management Interdisciplinary and Collaborative Doctoral Programs

Construction Management has two interdisciplinary doctoral program opportunities, offering the right fit for each candidate.  These programs are a collaborative effort between the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, the Department of Construction Management, and the School of Education.

To be considered for CM Graduate Teaching Assistantships (if available), new and continuing students must submit a complete doctoral program application by the following deadlines:

• Sept. 15 for Spring semester
• Feb. 1 for Fall semester

Timely submitting your complete application can increase your chances of being accepted and receiving financial assistance. To be considered for GTA positions, official transcripts must be received by the Graduate School at the time of teaching assistantship application. Please consider applying for future terms if you cannot submit all required application materials by the deadline.

Graduate Research and Teaching Assistantships

We may be able to offer either a GRA or GTA depending on availability and your credentials.

• To be considered for a GRA or GTA, you must first be accepted to the program, meaning you must apply first to the program before we can consider your eligibility.
• To be considered for GTA positions, you must submit all admission application materials by the posted deadline.
• To be considered for GTA positions, the Graduate School must receive all of your  official  transcripts before you can move into the GTA selection process.
• Priority for new and renewal GTA positions is given to students who are admitted and enrolled in the CM masters program, collaborative doctoral program focusing on construction with the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) with a primary adviser/co-adviser who is a CM faculty member, the collaborative doctoral program focusing on construction with the School of Education (SOE) with a primary adviser/co-adviser who is a CM faculty member, or the Systems Engineering Ph.D. program with a primary adviser who is a CM faculty member.
• GRA positions open at different times of the year based on when faculty research funding is available. Faculty members are the final decision-makers for GRA positions in their research programs.

Indian Nationals: Full-time - INR 75,000 (Per semester)* Part-time - INR 50,000 (Per semester)* Foreign Nationals: Full-time - INR 1.25 Lakhs (Per semester) Part-time - INR 1 Lakh (Per semester) *Applicable for the batch starting from 2023 onwards. Minimum and Maximum Degree Duration:

Admission Procedure

Candidates seeking admission to the Ph.D. program, whether full time or part time, shall have to possess requisite percentage of marks / grade point average / subjects/ specializations in qualifying examination as indicated under each Ph.D. program:

Applications for admission to a Ph.D. program at Amity University are accepted twice a year, for January and July sessions. A Ph.D. program is offered both on Full Time and Part Time basis. A ‘Full-time Candidate’ shall mean a candidate devoting full time for completing the requirements of the program and a ‘Part-time Candidate’ shall mean a candidate who is devoting only a part of his time towards the pursuit of the program while discharging his official/ employment obligations.

The admission Form is to be filled and submitted ONLINE ONLY along with required documents uploaded in the given format and an online payment of Rs 1100/- made via a Credit/ Debit card. No hard copies will be accepted.

Candidates will be communicated about requirements related to their application form, date, time and venue of selection process (written test and / or Interview) ONLY ON THE ADMISSION MICRO SITE at www.amity.edu or in the Amity Mobile App available at www.amity.edu/app. In certain cases, options of dates will be available giving greater flexibility. It is the responsibility of the candidate to periodically check the admission microsite for updates and to select a date for PET. No separate communication will be sent in this regard.

Eligible candidates will be required to undertake PET (Ph.D. Entrance Test), on the date selected by them. PET will be a computer based test (CBT) followed by an Interview, on the same day

Selected candidates will get intimation of their selection through an Online Admission Letter which can be printed from the Admission Micro site. Details regarding payment of fees at the time of admission, date, time and venue for commencement of the academic session will be mentioned in the admission letter.

Offer of admission will be provisional & valid only for the specific program opted by the candidate as well as for the same academic session. The offer of admission will automatically stand cancelled if the conditions are not fulfilled by the specified time.

Entrance Test Details

The Entrance Test shall be of one and half hour duration (i.e. 90 minutes) and of 70 marks consisting of 95 objective type of questions. The Entrance Test will have two Sections (administered in one go), as mentioned here under:

Important Points

Date of Registration

The date of registration of the candidate shall be the date of payment of fees. The registration period will end on the date of submission of Ph.D thesis.

Residency Period

The minimum Residency Period for full time as well as part time candidates in the Department / Constituent Unit shall ordinarily be one year. This period, in exceptional circumstances, can be reduced to not less than six months by URC (University Research Committee) on the recommendations of DRC (Doctoral Research Committee). Residency period does not imply that the scholar stays in the university campus. It only means that he/she resides in the proximity of the campus to enable her/him to attend coursework classes on regular basis on assigned days, since an attendance of 75% is mandatory to be able to take a comprehensive examination at the end of coursework.

Attendance Requirement 

Minimum 75% attendance is required during residency period.

Course Work 

All candidates admitted to Ph. D. programs have to compulsorily do the course work assigned and shall be required to take a written examination for the same. Coursework period will ordinarily be of minimum six months duration. A candidate will earn credits for a Course Unit only if he obtains a minimum of Grade B+ (Points 07 on scale of 10). If a candidate fails to get qualifying Grade B+, he / she will be given second opportunity to improve his/her qualifying Grade to B+, i.e. Point 7 on ten point scale failing which his/her registration is liable to be cancelled. Scholars shall be required to undertake coursework for a minimum period of one semester, not exceeding one academic year from the date of the provisional registration

Tentative class timings during coursework period:

Ph.D. Full time : All working days, 9.00 am-5.30 pm Ph.D. Part time : Saturday-Sunday, 9.00 am-5.30 pm

Comprehensive Examination 

Each candidate, on completion of course work, shall be required to take a comprehensive examination which will test his/her comprehension or knowledge in his/her broad field of research and his/her academic preparation and potentials to carry out the research work. The comprehensive examination shall be combination of both written and oral examinations and shall be conducted by the faculty. The candidate is required to secure at least Grade B (Points 06 on scale of 10) in comprehensive examination.

Minimum and Maximum Degree Duration 

Candidate will be given the time duration for submission of his / her Ph.D. thesis (from the date of registration) as per the details given above.

Research Plan

Each applicant seeking admission to the Ph.D programs of RICS School of Built Environment, Amity University is required to submit a 1,000 word typed research plan (excluding references) in PDF format. The file should be named as per the following convention - FirstName_LastName_RP.pdf. The research plan should have the following information (suggested word limit is provided alongside):

• Title of the proposed research (10 to 15 words) and name of the candidate
• Introduction and background (100 words)
• Problem statement/need statement (100 words)
• Literature review (200 words)
• Research goal and objectives (100 words)
• Research methodology (300 words)
• Research Tasks and Timeline (100 words)
• Potential research contributions (100 words)
• References (no word limit)

Kindly use a 2.54 centimeter margin on all sides of an A4 sheet with portrait orientation. The font style to be used is ‘Calibri’ where the font size is 11. Also note, text is to be double spaced with proper section headings.

Classification of Candidates

An Indian candidate applying for admission to the Ph.D. Program shall be classified under any one of the following categories:

Sponsored Candidates: Sponsored candidates getting Government / Semi Govt. / Private or other Scholarships/ Fellowships /stipends, who apply for admission through the sponsoring organizations.

Regular Self - Financed Candidates: students, self- employed or other working / non-working candidates

Corporate Research Scholar: Candidates working with reputed organizations in India and having at least five years’ experience and possessing minimum prescribed academic qualifications.

Working Faculty other than Amity: Faculty members of other Universities /schools and recognized/ approved institutions/schools in India, possessing minimum prescribed academic qualifications.

Regular Academic Staff of Amity: Regular academic staff of Department/ Constituent Units of Amity University who are allowed to register for Ph.D. on part time basis.

Regular Non-Academic Staff of Amity: Regular member of non-academic staff of the University and its Departments/ Constituent Units who satisfies eligibility qualifications and is allowed to be registered for a part-time Ph.D. program.

Scholars who are awarded National Fellowships through National Competitive Examinations.

A foreign national will apply under the foreign candidate category.

MSCM Program Mission The Master of Science in Construction Management (MSCM) program at Wentworth Institute of Technology is a graduate program of study for construction professionals. The program is designed to educate students in foundational post graduate management principles combined with relevant construction education and experience in topics that are specific to preparing and advancing professional skills in administrative and executive leadership positions in design firms, construction companies and related disciplines. Both thesis and non-thesis options are available which allow for a variety of employment or educational opportunities including but not limited to working for general contractors, real-estate developers, sub-contractors, construction management and architectural/engineering firms, as well as advanced education and teaching options.

Wentworth MSCM Program Goals To carry out the mission of the Master of Science in Construction Management program, the following program goals have been developed in order to prepare students academically for personal and professional success in the built environment. The Master of Science in Construction Management is 30 credits. Students work with their advisor to create a course plan that includes a minimum of 18 credits in graduate Construction Management courses, including 3 required courses (9 credits), and a maximum of 12 credits in elective courses. Elective courses can include graduate Construction Management, Management or Facility Management courses as well as courses from other disciplines with approval from the student's graduate advisor. 

Our HyFlex program allows you to start in the semester of your choice and complete your degree on a full-time (3-5 courses per term) or part-time (1-2 courses per term) basis.

The Graduate Program in Construction Management emphasizes integrating professional experience with Construction Management (CM) concepts. With an established MSCM program, the School of Management provides a curriculum with flexible course electives and three distinct and different degree tracks. This curriculum's vision is to give graduate students more flexibility to select their electives from the established MSCM curriculum, the facility management (MSFM), and the project management (MSPM) curriculum.

Students will have the option to select one of the following tracks ( track declaration must be made and graduate faculty advisor notified of selection, prior to the start of the second semester of attendance in the MSCM program ); 

• Track 1 Coursework - 30 credit hours (open for rolling admission Fall, Spring, and Summer), which focusses on pure graduate coursework only,
• Track 2 Capstone Project - 30 credit hours ( Fall admission only) , which contains an industry or research-focused project that serves as the culminating experience for the degree program, or
• Track 3 Thesis - 30 credit hours (Fall admission only) that include 6 credit hours in research thesis embedded across the final year.

The program also allows full-time students to engage in an optional 1 credit Graduate Program Internship INTN6000 to gain hands-on experience in the construction industry (3 credits maximum during their tenure at Wentworth). Once a track has been declared by the student, any future changes to the plan of study must be approved via signature from their primary, graduate faculty advisor and the Dean’s Office.

Note: Students without a CM-related, undergraduate degree (Civil Engineering, Architecture or Construction Management) will be required to enroll in two pre-requisite courses, which are in addition to the standard 30 credit hour degree tracks outlined by program ( total of 36 credit hours ).

CEGE Spring Graduation Celebration and Order of the Engineer

Forty-seven graduates of the undergraduate and grad student programs (pictured above) in the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geo- Engineering took part in the Order of the Engineer on graduation day. Distinguished Speakers at this departmental event included Katrina Kessler (MS EnvE 2021), Commissioner of the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, and student Brian Balquist. Following this event, students participated in the college-wide Commencement Ceremony at 3M Arena at Mariucci. 

UNIVERSITY & DEPARTMENT

The University of Minnesota’s Crookston, Duluth, and Rochester campuses have been awarded the Carnegie Elective Classification for Community Engagement, joining the Twin Cities (2006, 2015) and Morris campuses (2015), and making the U of M the country’s first and only university system at which every individual campus has received this selective designation. Only 368 from nearly 4,000 qualifying U.S. universities and colleges have been granted this designation.

CEGE contributed strongly to the College of Science and Engineering’s efforts toward sustainability research. CEGE researchers are bringing in over $35 million in funded research to study carbon mineralization, nature and urban areas, circularity of water resources, and global snowfall patterns. CEGE’s new program for a one-year master’s degree in structural engineering is now accepting applicants for Fall 2024. BERNIE BULLERT , CEGE benefactor and MN Water Research Fund founder, was profiled on the website of the University of Minnesota Foundation (UMF). After retiring from Baker-Tilly,  NICK DRAGISICH  (BCE 1977) has taken on a new role: City Council member in Lake Elmo, Minnesota. After earning his BCE from the University of Minnesota, Dragisich earned a master’s degree in business administration from the University of St. Thomas. Dragisich retired in May from his position as managing director at Baker Tilly, where he had previously served as firm director. Prior to that, he served as assistant city manager in Spokane, Washington, was the city administrator and city engineer in Virginia, Minnesota, and was mayor of Chisholm, Minnesota—all adding up to more than 40 years of experience in local government. Dragisich was selected by a unanimous vote. His current term expires in December 2024.

PAUL F. GNIRK  (Ph.D. 1966) passed away January 29, 2024, at the age of 86. A memorial service was held Saturday, February 24, at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology (SDSM&T), where he started and ended his teaching career, though he had many other positions, professional and voluntary. In 2018 Paul was inducted into the SDSM&T Hardrocker Hall of Fame, and in 2022, he was inducted into the South Dakota Hall of Fame, joining his mother Adeline S. Gnirk, who had been inducted in 1987 for her work authoring nine books on the history of south central South Dakota.

ROGER M. HILL  (BCE 1957) passed away on January 13, 2024, at the age of 90. His daughter, Kelly Robinson, wrote to CEGE that Roger was “a dedicated Gopher fan until the end, and we enjoyed many football games together in recent years. Thank you for everything.”

KAUSER JAHAN  (Ph.D. 1993, advised by Walter Maier), PE, is now a civil and environmental engineering professor and department head at Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering. Jahan was awarded a 3-year (2022- 2025), $500,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA). The grant supports her project, “WaterWorks: Developing the New Generation of Workforce for Water/Wastewater Utilities,” for the development of educational tools that will expose and prepare today’s students for careers in water and wastewater utilities.

SAURA JOST  (BCE 2010, advised by Timothy LaPara) was elected to the St. Paul City Council for Ward 3. She is part of the historic group of women that make up the nation’s first all-female city council in a large city.

The 2024 ASCE Western Great Lakes Student Symposium combines several competitions for students involved in ASCE. CEGE sent a large contingent of competitors to Chicago. Each of the competition groups won awards: Ethics Paper 1st place Hans Lagerquist; Sustainable Solutions team 1st place overall in (qualifying them for the National competition in Utah in June); GeoWall 2nd place overall; Men’s Sprint for Concrete Canoe with rowers Sakthi Sundaram Saravanan and Owen McDonald 2nd place; Product Prototype for Concrete Canoe 2nd place; Steel Bridge (200 lb bridge weight) 2nd place in lightness; Scavenger Hunt 3rd place; and Aesthetics and Structural Efficiency for Steel Bridge 4th place.

Students competing on the Minnesota Environmental Engineers, Scientists, and Enthusiasts (MEESE) team earned second place in the Conference on the Environment undergraduate student design competition in November 2023. The CEGE CLASS OF 2023 raised money to help reduce the financial barrier for fellow students taking the Fundamentals of Engineering exam, a cost of $175 per test taker. As a result of this gift, they were able to make the exam more affordable for 15 current CEGE seniors. CEGE students who take the FE exam pass the first time at a rate well above national averages, demonstrating that CEGE does a great job of teaching engineering fundamentals. In 2023, 46 of 50 students passed the challenging exam on the first try.

This winter break, four CEGE students joined 10 other students from the College of Science and Engineering for the global seminar, Design for Life: Water in Tanzania. The students visited numerous sites in Tanzania, collected water source samples, designed rural water systems, and went on safari. Undergraduate Honor Student  MALIK KHADAR  (advised by Dr. Paul Capel) received honorable mention for the Computing Research Association (CRA) Outstanding Undergraduate Research Award for undergraduate students who show outstanding research potential in an area of computing research.

GRADUATE STUDENTS

AKASH BHAT  (advised by William Arnold) presented his Ph.D. defense on Friday, October 27, 2023. Bhat’s thesis is “Photolysis of fluorochemicals: Tracking fluorine, use of UV-LEDs, and computational insights.” Bhat’s work investigating the degradation of fluorinated compounds will assist in the future design of fluorinated chemicals such that persistent and/or toxic byproducts are not formed in the environment.

ETHAN BOTMEN  (advised by Bill Arnold) completed his Master of Science Final Exam February 28, 2024. His research topic was Degradation of Fluorinated Compounds by Nucleophilic Attack of Organo-fluorine Functional Groups.

XIATING CHEN , Ph.D. Candidate in Water Resources Engineering at the Saint Anthony Falls Laboratory is the recipient of the 2023 Nels Nelson Memorial Fellowship Award. Chen (advised by Xue Feng) is researching eco-hydrological functions of urban trees and other green infrastructure at both the local and watershed scale, through combined field observations and modeling approaches.

ALICE PRATES BISSO DAMBROZ  has been a Visiting Student Researcher at the University of Minnesota since last August, on a Doctoral Dissertation Research Award from Fulbright. Her CEGE advisor is Dr. Paul Capel. Dambroz is a fourth year Ph.D. student in Soil Science at Universidade Federal de Santa Maria in Brazil, where she studies with her adviser Jean Minella. Her research focuses on the hydrological monitoring of a small agricultural watershed in Southern Brazil, which is located on a transition area between volcanic and sedimentary rocks. Its topography, shallow soils, and land use make it prone to runoff and erosion processes.

Yielding to people in crosswalks should be a very pedestrian topic. Yet graduate student researchers  TIANYI LI, JOSHUA KLAVINS, TE XU, NIAZ MAHMUD ZAFRI  (Dept.of Urban and Regional Planning at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology), and Professor Raphael Stern found that drivers often do not yield to pedestrians, but they are influenced by the markings around a crosswalk. Their work was picked up by the  Minnesota Reformer.

TIANYI LI  (Ph.D. student advised by Raphael Stern) also won the Dwight David Eisenhower Transportation (DDET) Fellowship for the third time! Li (center) and Stern (right) are pictured at the Federal Highway Administration with Latoya Jones, the program manager for the DDET Fellowship.

The Three Minute Thesis Contest and the Minnesota Nice trophy has become an annual tradition in CEGE. 2023’s winner was  EHSANUR RAHMAN , a Ph.D. student advised by Boya Xiong.

GUANJU (WILLIAM) WEI , a Ph.D. student advised by Judy Yang, is the recipient of the 2023 Heinz G. Stefan Fellowship. He presented his research entitled Microfluidic Investigation of the Biofilm Growth under Dynamic Fluid Environments and received his award at the St. Anthony Falls Research Laboratory April 9. The results of Wei's research can be used in industrial, medical, and scientific fields to control biofilm growth.

BILL ARNOLD  stars in an award-winning video about prairie potholes. The Prairie Potholes Project film was made with the University of Delaware and highlights Arnold’s NSF research. The official winners of the 2024 Environmental Communications Awards Competition Grand Prize are Jon Cox and Ben Hemmings who produced and directed the film. Graduate student Marcia Pacheco (CFANS/LAAS) and Bill Arnold are the on-screen stars.

Four faculty from CEGE join the Center for Transportation Studies Faculty and Research Scholars for FY24–25:  SEONGJIN CHOI, KETSON ROBERTO MAXIMIANO DOS SANTOS, PEDRAM MORTAZAVI,  and  BENJAMIN WORSFOLD . CTS Scholars are drawn from diverse fields including engineering, planning, computer science, environmental studies, and public policy.

XUE FENG  is coauthor on an article in  Nature Reviews Earth and Environment . The authors evaluate global plant responses to changing rainfall regimes that are now characterized by fewer and larger rainfall events. A news release written at Univ. of Maryland can be found here: https://webhost.essic. umd.edu/april-showers-bring-mayflowers- but-with-drizzles-or-downpours/ A long-running series of U of M research projects aimed at improving stormwater quality are beginning to see practical application by stormwater specialists from the Twin Cities metro area and beyond. JOHN GULLIVER has been studying best practices for stormwater management for about 16 years. Lately, he has focused specifically on mitigating phosphorous contamination. His research was highlighted by the Center for Transportation Studies.

JIAQI LI, BILL ARNOLD,  and  RAYMOND HOZALSKI  published a paper on N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) precursors in Minnesota rivers. “Animal Feedlots and Domestic Wastewater Discharges are Likely Sources of N-Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) Precursors in Midwestern Watersheds,” Environmental Science and Technology (January 2024) doi: 10.1021/acs. est.3c09251

ALIREZA KHANI  contributed to MnDOT research on Optimizing Charging Infrastructure for Electric Trucks. Electric options for medium- and heavy-duty electric trucks (e-trucks) are still largely in development. These trucks account for a substantial percentage of transportation greenhouse gas emissions. They have greater power needs and different charging needs than personal EVs. Proactively planning for e-truck charging stations will support MnDOT in helping to achieve the state’s greenhouse gas reduction goals. This research was featured in the webinar “Electrification of the Freight System in Minnesota,” hosted by the University of Minnesota’s Center for Transportation Studies. A recording of the event is now available online.

MICHAEL LEVIN  has developed a unique course for CEGE students on Air Transportation Systems. It is the only class at UMN studying air transportation systems from an infrastructure design and management perspective. Spring 2024 saw the third offering of this course, which is offered for juniors, seniors, and graduate students.

Research Professor  SOFIA (SONIA) MOGILEVSKAYA  has been developing international connections. She visited the University of Seville, Spain, November 13–26, 2023, where she taught a short course titled “Fundamentals of Homogenization in Composites.” She also met with the graduate students to discuss collaborative research with Prof. Vladislav Mantic, from the Group of Continuum Mechanics and Structural Analysis at the University of Seville. Her visit was a part of planned activities within the DIAGONAL Consortium funded by the European Commission. CEGE UMN is a partner organization within DIAGONAL, represented by CEGE professors Mogilevskaya and Joseph Labuz. Mantic will visit CEGE summer 2024 to follow up on research developments and discuss plans for future collaboration and organization of short-term exchange visits for the graduate students from each institution. 

DAVID NEWCOMB  passed away in March. He was a professor in CEGE from 1989–99 in the area of pavement engineering. Newcomb led the research program on asphalt materials characterization. He was the technical director of Mn/ROAD pavement research facility, and he started an enduring collaboration with MnDOT that continues today. In 2000, he moved from Minnesota to become vice-president for Research and Technology at the National Asphalt Pavement Association. Later he moved to his native Texas, where he was appointed to the division head of Materials and Pavement at the Texas A&M Transportation Institute, a position from which he recently retired. He will be greatly missed.

PAIGE NOVAK  won Minnesota ASCE’s 2023 Distinguished Engineer of the Year Award for her contributions to society through her engineering achievements and professional experiences.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) announced ten inaugural (NSF) Regional Innovation Engines awards, with a potential $1.6 billion investment nationally over the next decade. Great Lakes ReNEW is led by the Chicago-based water innovation hub,  Current,  and includes a team from the University of Minnesota, including PAIGE NOVAK. Current will receive $15 mil for the first two years, and up to $160 million over ten years to develop and grow a water-focused innovation engine in the Great Lakes region. The project’s ambitious plan is to create a decarbonized circular “blue economy” to leverage the region’s extraordinary water resources to transform the upper Midwest—Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin. Brewing one pint of beer generates seven pints of wastewater, on average. So what can you do with that wastewater?  PAIGE NOVAK  and her team are exploring the possibilities of capturing pollutants in wastewater and using bacteria to transform them into energy.

BOYA XIONG  has been selected as a recipient of the 2024 40 Under 40 Recognition Program by the American Academy of Environmental Engineers and Scientists. The award was presented at the 2024 AAEES Awards Ceremony, April 11, 2024, at the historic Howard University in Washington, D.C. 

JUDY Q. YANG  received a McKnight Land-Grant Professorship Award. This two-year award recognizes promising assistant professors and is intended to advance the careers of individuals who have the potential to make significant contributions to their departments and their scholarly fields. 

Professor Emeritus CHARLES FAIRHURST , his son CHARLES EDWARD FAIRHURST , and his daughter MARGARET FAIRHURST DURENBERGER were on campus recently to present Department Head Paige Novak with a check for $25,000 for the Charles Fairhurst Fellowship in Earth Resources Engineering in support of graduate students studying geomechanics.
