Free Consensus NHL Picks for Every Game

Sidney Crosby Evgeni Malkin Pittsburgh Penguins NHL Picks

The suggestions on this NHL picks page are based on the market consensus (the most common pick) from free picks providers across the sports betting industry such as Covers , Sports Betting Dime , Pickswise and more.

Those market consensus picks pair with the best available NHL betting lines from our recommended sportsbooks , giving you the best puck line (point spread), total (over/under), and moneyline bets for every NHL  game throughout the season.

NHL Consensus Pick Examples

NHL odds example

In these examples, the Pittsburgh Penguins are hosting the Philadelphia Flyers, which is one of the biggest rivalries in the NHL.

Of the sources provided by Betting News, 79% are picking the Penguuins to win the game. The best price (odds) for that pick is -157 at BetOnline .

And of the sources provided by Betting News, 57% are picking the total to go over. The best line available for that pick is over 6 (+106) at BetOnline.

However, 100% of the sources Betting News monitors are picking the Flyers to cover the puck line. The best line available for that pick is +1.5 (-175) at Bovada .

Our NHL game articles often refer to these picks, with our writers either siding with the pick or going against it based on individual analysis.

Bettors can then use that information to help determine which games to bet on and where to place bets on those games.

The best bets on our NHL picks page are subject to change based on how we calculate market consensus and are also not financial advice. Please gamble responsibly.

How Is the Market Consensus Calculated?

NHL consensus picks example

Betting News uses predicted scores advertised by free picks providers to determine the market consensus.

Each provider gives us an exact score projection, which we take into account when calculating the consensus picks on the moneyline (ML), puck line (PL), and total (over/under or O/U) for each NHL game.

Based on the NHL odds from our listed sources, the best lines for that game are as follows:

Moneyline (ML)

  • Philadelphia Flyers +145 (BetUS)
  • Pittsburgh Penguins -157 (BetOnline)

Total (O/U)

  • Over 6 (+106) (BetOnline)
  • Under 6 (-115) (BetUS, Bovada, and MyBookie)

Puck Line (PL)

  • Philadelphia Flyers +1.5 (-175) (Bovada)
  • Pittsburgh Penguins -1.5 (+165) (BetOnline & BetUS)

Based on these projections and the best lines from our providers, the consensus NHL picks for this matchup would be determined.

With so many of our expert sources backing the Penguins, we would recommend betting them as well. We would point you towards BetOnline, which has the best price of -157.

The same logic applies for betting on the total and the PL. We would also direct you to BetOnline for the best odds for the total, while we would direct you to Bovada for the best puck line odds.

  • How Do We Generate Our Expert NHLPicks?

Our picks are generated via three central channels, starting with our NHL experts breaking down the key details and picks ahead of the big games across the league. The  betting.com  NHL coverage also leans on insights from experienced handicappers and AI-driven predictions.

  • What Is The Best Way To Wager Using Our NHL Picks?

Our site is here to act as a one-stop shop for both picks and wagering. If you’re reading our picks and know the wagers you want to place, you’ll see that we’ve already tracked down the most favourable odds on the market. From your account, it just takes a few clicks to place your bets.

  • Moneyline NHL Picks

When it comes to moneyline betting, you are simply answering one question: which team will win the game? The margin of victory is not a factor. Here, a win is a win.

  • NHL Picks Against The Spread

Spread betting (or Puck Lines betting) focuses on the scoreline and margin of victory/defeat. The oddsmakers will set an over/under line based on the difference in quality and form between the two teams – but given the low-scoring nature of the NHL, the over/under line usually sits around 1.5. As a result, in many cases, you may just prefer to bet the moneyline.

  • Best NHL Picks For The Season

Division Winners

  • Atlantic Division, Eastern Conference:   Understandably, all eyes will be on the  Tampa Bay Lightning  this season after back-to-back Stanley Cup successes. With their biggest stars still under contract, there is every reason to expect the Lightning to make another deep playoff run. The sceptics will point to some of the depth they lost this offseason, but Tampa Bay are going to make plenty of noise as long as the Andrei Vasilevskiy-Victor Hedman-Nikita Kucherov trio is healthy. After another agonising postseason exit, the  Toronto Maple Leafs  are running out of time to fulfill their potential but their top-tier talent should spark another strong regular season. Make no mistake, the stakes are high for Auston Matthews, John Tavares and Mitch Marner this year. With age threatening to catch up with the  Boston Bruins , the door is open for other contenders to emerge, including the  Florida Panthers , who are primed for a big leap behind duo Jonathan Huberdeau and Aleksander Barkov, and even the  Ottawa Senators if they can fast-track their rebuild. After a fairytale run to the Stanley Cup last season, the  Montreal Canadiens  are likely to crash back to earth this year, especially after losing Shea Weber to injury, while the  Detroit Red Wings  appear at least a year away from being a playoff threat despite acquiring highly-rated goalie Alex Nedeljkovic. The  Buffalo Sabres  are the favourites to prop up this division, just adding to the uncertainty around phenom Jack Eichel’s future.  The pick: Lightning (+150)
  • Metropolitan Division, Eastern Conference:   The race for top spot in this division should go down to the wire, even if the  New York Islanders  seemingly start with a slight edge. The Islanders have enjoyed postseason success with their “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts” approach. They welcome back Anders Lee from an ACL injury and will depend on the steady play of Matt Barzal. If all the pieces fall into place, the Islanders might be the biggest threat to the Lightning in the East. For the  Carolina Hurricanes , one of last season’s success stories, much depends again on Sebastian Aho as the spark for a playoff run, but they have the talent to push the Islanders all the way if they stay healthy and there is optimism that their young core will be even more polished this year. Artemi Panarin and the  New York Rangers  are a trendy pick to exceed expectations this year but will need some time to gel after an action-packed offseason – and they may have a few more moves to make. The  Washington Capitals  have the veteran savvy to force their way into the Stanley Cup conversation, even if they save their best form for the postseason. Behind Alex Ovechkin, pencil in the Capitals as a playoff team. The  Pittsburgh Penguins  are banking on the same formula as Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin embark on another postseason push – but it remains to be seen whether that duo can manage the heavy lifting. Watch out for the  Philadelphia Flyers  this year after one of the NHL’s busier offseasons, headlined by the addition of defenseman Ryan Ellis. While the rebuilding  Columbus Blue Jackets  stand out as the weakest team in the Metropolitan, don’t sleep on the  New Jersey Devils  either as they try to transition from “rebuild” to “contention”.  The pick: Islanders (+300)
  • Central Division, Western Conference:   Last season seemed to be shaping up perfectly for the  Colorado Avalanche  to reach the Stanley Cup before a Conference Semifinals setback. Fueled by the hunger to avenge that disappointment, the Avalanche are expected to go close again. Losing goalie Philipp Grubauer in free agency hurts, but the Nathan MacKinnon line is among the most prolific in the NHL. The  Winnipeg Jets  served notice of their blossoming talent in the 2021 playoffs and bring back a well balanced roster led by Mark Scheifele. They should get another crack at the postseason this year. The  Dallas Stars  and  St. Louis Blues  stand out as veteran-laden teams itching for another playoff run. For the Stars, that depends on a huge season from Miro Heiskanen, while the Blues will lean on holdovers from their 2019 Stanley Cup run. The  Minnesota Wild  are rightly receiving some under-the-radar buzz as the division’s dark horse contender – and that status was boosted by re-signing Kirill Kaprizov. Do not be surprised if the Wild end up pushing the Avalanche close at the Central Division summit. The  Chicago Blackhawks  are heading for a crossroads but could exceed expectations if Seth Jones and Patrick Kane hit top form. The likelier scenario is that they slide towards the bottom of the division alongside the  Nashville Predators  (regression candidate) and  Arizona Coyotes  (eyeing future draft picks).  The pick: Avalanche (-260)
  • Pacific Division, Western Conference:   For the  Vegas Golden Knights , the 2021 playoffs were a missed opportunity, falling to the Canadiens when they had the stronger team on paper. Still, they are well placed to get back to the NHL’s final four this year. This is an experienced, balanced roster and should move on seamlessly with Robin Lehner replacing Marc-Andre Fleury between the pipes. There is major pressure on the  Edmonton Oilers  after being swept out of the playoffs last season, but this could be the year that they put things together around superstar duo Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. The offseason addition of Zach Hyman will help. Anything short of the Conference Finals could prompt big changes in Edmonton. The  Vancouver Canucks  profile well as a bounceback team this season, with a solid core and the potential for Elias Pettersson to make another leap. If the Canucks falter, the  LA Kings  are another contender to crash the party near the top of the Pacific after retooling around Anze Kopitar. The  Seattle Kraken  should be NHL-ready defensively but the newcomers look short on offensive firepower, while the  Calgary Flames  are a popular pick for improvement in the win column if Johnny Gaudreau has a big year. The  Anaheim Ducks are years away from competing for the playoffs and could end up with the NHL’s worst regular season record, and they could be joined at the bottom of the division by the  San Jose Sharks , who are working their way through a reset of their own.  The pick: Golden Knights (-200)
  • Hart Memorial Trophy (Regular Season MVP)   Connor McDavid won this award for the second time in 2021 but the Oilers’ playoff meltdown took some of the gloss off his terrific regular season. There are plenty of other contenders for this award, starting with McDavid’s Edmonton team-mate Leon Draisaitl (2020 winner) and the Maple Leafs’ goal-machine Auston Matthews. But we like the Nathan MacKinnon narrative this season if the Avalanche finish at the top of the Central Division and he maintains his electric form.  The pick: MacKinnon (+600)
  • Vezina Trophy (Best Goalie)   Marc-Andre Fleury scooped this award last season, but Andrei Vasilevskiy provided a timely reminder in the playoffs that he is the top goalie in the NHL. Given that some felt Vasilevskiy was snubbed for the trophy in 2021, he is well placed to garner votes this year if he continues to post shutouts for the Lightning. The Winnipeg Jets’ Connor Hellebuyck is another interesting contender, but Vasilevskiy stands out as the pick here, even with short odds.  The pick: Vasilevskiy (+350)
  • Calder Memorial Trophy (Best Rookie)   Cole Caufield grabbed the headlines with his 2021 postseason play and should have a slight edge in this award race. Caufield remains eligible having only played ten regular season games last year and seems to have the clearest path to the ice time needed to take home the Calder Trophy. Even if the Montreal Canadiens take a step back, Caufield’s production should remain steady. Trevor Zegras is in a similar position with the Anaheim Ducks – he got 20+ games under his belt last season and should feature prominently – but the Ducks’ overall struggles in the win/loss column could hold him back. Other (longer shot) contenders include Moritz Seider (Detroit Red Wings) and Jeremy Swayman (Boston Bruins). The pick: Caufield (+225)
  • Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy (Top Goalscorer)   This award, dominated by Ovechkin over the past decade but won by Matthews in 2021, should be a tight battle this season. Matthews’ short odds (+350) are less appealing than those for some of the NHL’s other elite scorers, from McDavid to Ovechkin to Draisaitl. With the Bruins leaning more on David Pastrnak than ever, look for the Boston superstar to muscle his way into the mix too.  The pick: Pastrnak (+1100)
  • Norris Trophy (Best Defenseman)   Cale Makar ( Avalanche) is the favourite in this category, followed by last year’s winner Adam Fox (Rangers). But there is some solid value further down the list in a category that has the potential to be an open race. Morgan Rielly is worth a look if you like the Maple Leafs to dominate the Eastern Conference while Miro Heiskanen is a sneaky pick to take his play up another notch in Dallas, where he has been a consistent clutch performer.  The pick: Heiskanen (+1600)
  • Jack Adams Award (Best Coach)   Jon Cooper (Lightning) and Joel Quenneville (Panthers) are co-favourites at around +650, and you can easily make the case for both. Cooper has a powerhouse, experienced core in Tampa Bay while Florida are set to emerge as a regular season force. But we expect a strong response from the Maple Leafs after an offseason of reflection and, setting aside postseason demons, a healthy roster has a shot to top the Atlantic Division, making Sheldon Keefe an appealing longer shot in this category.  The pick: Keefe (+1200)
  • Presidents’ Trophy (Best Regular Season Record)   With this category, throw out any concerns about a team’s ability to get the job done in the playoffs. It is purely a regular season award. There are four main contenders here – the Avalanche, Lightning, Maple Leafs and Golden Knights, and it would be somewhat surprising to see this award bagged by a team outside that shortlist. We are leaning towards Colorado, given their hunger to make amends for last season and the lack of a proven threat in the Central Division.  The pick: Avalanche (+250)
  • NHL Playoffs Picks

Stanley Cup Avalanche (+450) over Lightning

This clash of two elite teams with proven superstar leaders would have all the makings of a classic series. The toll of three straight Stanley Cup runs might finally catch up with the Lightning at this last step so we give the slight edge to MacKinnon and the Avalanche.

With an array of awards to wager on and a fascinating race for Stanley Cup glory, the NHL is set up for a rollercoaster season. From veteran teams chasing one last playoff run to up-and-coming rosters desperate to taste the latter rounds of the postseason, get ready for a competitive regular season and more all-time playoff moments.

What is the best site for NHL predictions?

OddsTrader emerges as the leading choice for NHL predictions, thanks to its cutting-edge computer algorithms that dive into an extensive array of data points and run detailed simulations, yielding exceptionally accurate predictions for hockey games.

This forward-thinking approach reduces the influence of bias, ensuring that ice hockey bettors receive dependable and unbiased predictions. Additionally, OddsTrader offers a wide range of tools that support bettors in making well-informed betting decisions at top hockey betting sites.

Hockey Score Predictions

NFL score predictions are forecasts about the outcomes of upcoming NFL games, specifically predicting the final scores. These predictions are valuable for novice and experienced bettors alike, offering insights into how a game might unfold.

Various ice hockey betting sites, sports analysts and computer algorithms offer NFL score predictions to help fans and bettors make informed decisions. The accuracy of these predictions can vary and they are used as a guide rather than a guarantee of the final score.

Websites like OddsTrader enhance these predictions with sophisticated tools and resources, offering up-to-date player and team statistics, betting odds and forecasts to provide a comprehensive overview of what could happen between hockey teams in a single game.

How To Bet on Predictions Today

It is worth considering OddsTrader’s NHL computer picks when wagering on National Hockey League games. Our computer picks are the product of thousands of calculations that account for all of the relevant data. This process yields a predicted score that you can use to bet on the side, total and more.

Moneyline Computer Picks

Placing moneyline bets involves predicting which team or side will win a given game. For your moneyline NHL picks, you can check out the score that the OddsTrader algorithm predicts and be sure that you’re making the best NHL bets.

Puck Line Computer Picks

With puck line bets, instead of betting on a winner, hockey enthusiasts can bet on the favored team to win by a certain number of goals or on the underdog to stay within a specific margin of goals. In the NHL, the standard spread is -1.5 although the top sportsbooks offer alternate puck lines.

By looking at puck line computer picks, you can feel confident that you’re making the best bets on each match.

Goal Total Computer Picks

You can also place a type of bet that involves predicting whether both teams will have a combined goal of more or fewer points than the total posted by the oddsmakers . Check out OddsTrader’s NHL goal total computer picks to get a better idea of how to approach the total for a specific game.

Computer Picks for Player Prop Bets

Instead of betting on a team, you can bet on a player and their performance. That way, their team could lose and you could still win your wager.

OddsTrader’s hockey computer picks on player props yield insight into high-scoring games that help you make the best hockey bets and uncover potential opportunities for above-average performances from certain players.

Computer Picks for Parlay Bets

In the NHL, moneylines tend to be very pricey or “chalky,” as it’s commonly known . One way to get better odds is with parlay picks. With this bet type, your predicted outcomes all have to occur for your wager to be successful. More often than not, you’ll see a greater profit than if you were to place each bet individually but you run the risk of losing your bet if one of the teams suffers an upset.

OddsTrader’s NHL parlay computer picks can help you reduce risk when parlaying your bets so you have a better opportunity to maximize your earnings .

Resources & Tips for Using Betting Picks

Our betting experts have included additional resources to aid in you being able to take advantage of data-driven picks.

NHL Game Odds for This Week

You can see the full card of NHL games for any given day along with corresponding betting odds (spread and total) for each one. This overview is helpful as you can scan the games and decide if one interests you for betting purposes.

You can also see how the betting lines differ across online sports betting sites. It is recommended to register with multiple online sportsbooks in order to line shop so you can get the best possible price.

Against the Spread Season Records

A team’s straight-up record is one thing, but this type of information is insufficient to consider because it doesn’t account for a team’s performance against the spread (ATS).

Fortunately, you can see how each team is performing against the spread at OddsTrader . When viewing a team’s ATS performance, you can determine if the top sportsbooks are correctly valuing each team.

Oddsmakers are notoriously slow to make adjustments in less popular markets, so you can use ATS records to find odds on teams that oddsmakers might have yet to update.

Weekly Public Betting Consensus

The public betting consensus is the side or total that most of the public thinks will win for any given NHL game. When a bettor chooses against the consensus pick, it is referred to as “fading the public.”

If you like a play and you find that the public is against it, then you might feel more confident in cashing out when the final horn is blown.

Weekly NHL Injury Report

It is imperative to periodically check the injury report and other key NHL news regarding players and teams for NHL games because when you’re betting on teams to play or score many or few goals, ultimately you are betting on the abilities of players as a collective group.

Traditionally, NHL injuries are common and goalies (a vital position) tend to get “rest games” during the regular season. These types of situations have an impact on the betting odds which is why OddsTrader delivers daily updates and a report for every hockey game on the NHL card.

Future Picks

NHL futures allow you to bet on the Stanley Cup winner well before the regular season even begins. If you feel like a team has a good chance to win it all, you can see the futures odds listed by the top sportsbooks on OddsTrader.

Given that odds are more favorable prior to the start of the season, you can enjoy a significant payout at the end of the hockey season if you win with this popular betting option.

Best Online Sportsbooks for Hockey Betting

The fact is that not all sportsbooks out there are trustworthy. However, it pays to use a licensed sportsbook so you can get the best quality when it comes to betting on the NHL. OddsTrader paves the way by breaking down the best NHL sportsbooks in the online sports betting industry.

Since computers are able to process a lot of data and information in a short period of time, they can be a great tool when it comes to NHL picks. While other resources are also valuable, computer picks are worth looking at before placing your NHL bets because they go through a rigorous statistical analysis to formulate hockey picks.

From that analysis, the computer creates strong, stats-driven NHL picks that are not swayed by human emotion. Instead of just following betting trends, hockey computer picks are formulated using data from all the players’ game performances in order to make smart game predictions.

With all this information already synthesized, hockey fans can have a better betting perspective without having to do the hard work and number crunching, allowing for a smoother betting experience. Instead, these AI-driven NHL picks can help you pin down the best betting opportunities in seconds.

2024 NHL playoffs: Rangers-Panthers Game 4 betting tips

P.K. Subban reacts to Jacob Trouba's elbowing penalty in the second period vs. the Rangers. (0:43)

sportsbook review nhl picks

We finally saw some offense break out in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference finals. Hidden just below the surface of the final score was a dominant performance by the Florida Panthers offense, with the New York Rangers more or less stealing a game thanks to some timely scoring and an all-world performance from Igor Shesterkin . Should we expect more of this in Game 4?

With the Panthers at home and with some time to chew on the disappointment of Game 3, I want to lean yes, but the odds are still suggesting a tighter affair. Opening lines have the Panthers favored and an under of 5.5 as the better bet.

That said, after what Florida did in the third period Sunday, I like some of the Panthers-heavy odds on offer.

sportsbook review nhl picks

Amerant Bank Arena, Sunrise, Florida; Tuesday, 8 p.m. ET Watch live

Sergei Bobrovsky to record a shutout (+900). A Panther shutout isn't my expected version of the Game 4 script, but these are nice odds for a shutout, and there is a world where Florida dominates this game. With the way the Panthers have shut down the elite Rangers such as Artemi Panarin , Mika Zibanejad , Chris Kreider and Adam Fox (zero goals and two assists between them), a shutout isn't out of the question here. There is also a Panthers To Win By Shutout at +750 among the Game Specials; obviously, this Bobrovsky bet is the one to take.

Artemi Panarin to record over 1.5 points and Igor Shesterkin to record over 29.5 saves and Rangers to win (+670). If you prefer the Rangers side, don't do this odds boost. Instead, take the suggestions here and build out your own parlay. The individual elements of the bet come with +180 odds for Panarin to go over 1.5 points, -115 for Shesterkin to top 29.5 saves and +150 for the Rangers moneyline. Doing those as a custom parlay would net +714 odds. The fact that Shesterkin has looked otherworldly -- and Panarin is due -- make it an appealing combo of bets if you don't buy into the Panthers revenge narrative. If the first two hit, a Rangers win is all but assured to complete the bet.

Evan Rodrigues total points over 0.5 (+170). With Rodrigues and Sam Bennett elevated to Matthew Tkachuk 's line late in the game, and the way they were buzzing, it would not be a shock to see them back together for this one. I'll take Rodrigues sneaking in a point.

Florida Panthers vs. New York Rangers series winner: Florida Panthers (+140). If you picked the Panthers to win this series, the 2-1 series deficit going into a Game 4 at home should not concern you -- especially after watching the offense go like it did Sunday (83 to 36 in shot attempts; the Rangers had to block 37 shots!) in a loss. This doesn't feel like taking any bigger risk on the Panthers than you would have before Game 1, but at the moment there are favorable rewards on that same bet.

Stars at Oilers Game 3 odds, expert picks: Western Conference final heads to Edmonton

DALLAS, TEXAS - MAY 23: Connor McDavid #97of the Edmonton Oilers advances the puck against Wyatt Johnston #53 of the Dallas Stars during the first period in Game One of the Western Conference Final of the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs at American Airlines Center on May 23, 2024 in Dallas, Texas. (Photo by Matthew Stockman/Getty Images)

The Western Conference final shifts from Dallas to Edmonton starting with Monday’s Game 3 at Rogers Place. The Stars evened the series with a 3-1 win on Saturday night to avoid being in a 2-0 hole headed to Canada. If you’re wondering how important Monday’s game is, teams that lead a conference final 2-1 have advanced to the Stanley Cup Final more than 76 percent of the time.

Losing Game 1 and winning Game 2 has been a familiar tale for the Stars organization and it wasn’t too much of a surprise to see them even the series at home. Mason Marchment scored the game-winner early in the third period.

The Oilers and specifically coach Kris Knoblauch are perplexed by the lack of penalty calls on the Stars in the first two games in Dallas. It’s pretty commonly known that NHL rules are called a bit differently for the playoffs, but players and coaches seem to be more frustrated by NHL officiating changing how the rules are enforced in the playoffs.

“The standard is the same for both teams. I’m not saying it’s unfair for us, but we would like the same standard,” Knoblauch said.

Dallas Stars at Edmonton Oilers — Game 3

How to watch: 8:30 p.m. ET on TNT, SN

Series tied 1-1

Series odds: Stars -115, Oilers -105

• Oilers forward Leon Draisaitl had his 13-game point streak end in the 3-1 loss on Friday night. Connor McDavid was also held without a point for the first time in this year’s Stanley Cup Playoffs.

• The Oilers are 4-2 at home this postseason outscoring opponents 26-19.

• Stars goalie Jake Oettinger won his 22nd career playoff game and is now only behind Ed Belfour in Stars/North Stars history.

• Stars forward Wyatt Johnson had two assists in the Stars win. He is now second on the Stars this postseason with 13 points behind only defenseman Miro Heiskanen .

• The Athletic ’s Mark Lazerus has an interesting story on how the Stars bought into a “little less for a lot more” motto that coach Pete DeBoer presented during a team bonding trip early in the season. It seems to be working so far for Dallas this season.

Best NHL Betting Promos: Bet Now on NHL Playoff Odds

Picking a Stanley Cup betting champion can be difficult because the winner can literally come from anywhere. The Panthers advanced to the final last year as a No. 8 seed before losing to the Golden Knights after waiting till the final day of the regular season to qualify for the playoffs.

The Rangers won the NHL’s President’s Trophy as the team with the best regular season record in the league, but the Blueshirts did not enter the playoffs as the favorites on the top sports betting apps . They were +800 at BetMGM and DraftKings. Now the Rangers are +320 at BetMGM and +400 at DraftKings — fourth-best odds among the four teams remaining. Just two President’s Trophy-winning teams – the 2008 Red Wings and the 2013 Blackhawks – have won the Stanley Cup since the NHL’s salary cap era began in 2005-06.

The Panthers, who won the Atlantic Division, are favorites to win the cup at +230, with Dallas (+240) and Edmonton (+280) close behind. But throw out all the odds at this stage, because there are no more underdogs or surprises. Any of these four teams is worthy of hoisting the Stanley Cup.

2024 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs: Picks, predictions for Rangers-Panthers, Stars-Oilers conference finals series

Eastern conference final starts wednesday, western conference final starts thursday.

untitled-design-2024-05-22t013454-396.png

The Stanley Cup Playoffs have provided some stellar drama throughout the first two rounds. After some entertaining action up to this point, it's officially time to shift our attention towards the Eastern and Western Conference Finals.

Three of the four No. 1 seeds still remain in the playoff picture. The New York Rangers will host the Florida Panthers in Game 1 of the East Final Wednesday, while the Dallas Stars will host the Edmonton Oilers Thursday in the West Finals series opener. Our analysts have weighed in with their picks for both both series.

(1) Rangers vs. (1) Panthers

Chris Bengel: The Rangers folded like a cheap suit in the opening round of last year's playoffs, but it's been a completely different story in 2024. New York captured the Presidents' Trophy as the team with the most points during the regular season -- something that's typically a curse for teams once they get to the postseason -- but, obviously, that hasn't bitten them thus far.

After a sweep of the Washington Capitals in the first round, the Rangers were given all they could handle against the Carolina Hurricanes in what turned out to be a very tight series. In fact, if it wasn't for a monumental collapse by the Hurricanes, perhaps a different team advances to the East Final. The Panthers and Rangers are two offenses that match up very well against one another as they both are averaging over 3.5 goals per game this postseason.

With star power on both sides, this series could definitely come down to which veteran goaltender rises to the occasion more often. Sergei Bobrovsky helped lead the Panthers to the Stanley Cup Final last year and he has proven to be strong in between the pipes yet again with a 2.37 goals-against-average in these playoffs. Meanwhile, Igor Shesterkin, who was outplayed by Jonathan Quick at times during the regular season, has given New York a stable presence in net thus far with a 8-2-0 record and a .923 save percentage.

This is likely going to be a very physical, tight series that will feature plenty of offensive outbursts. When push comes to shove, the Panthers are the team that I think has the mettle to persevere after being pushed to their limit against the Tampa Bay Lightning and Boston Bruins in the first two rounds.  Pick -- Panthers beat Rangers, 4-3

Austin Nivison: These two teams were the best in the Eastern Conference all season, but they got here in very different ways. While the Panthers love to control play at five-on-five, the Rangers use elite special teams and world-class goaltending to punish opponents.

Looking at the Rangers' five-on-five profile is a fool's errand. They have posted middling numbers at even strength for years now, but it hasn't mattered. Mika Zibanejad, Chris Kreider and Artemi Panarin have spectacular finishing ability, the power play is almost as lethal as the Oilers' and Igor Shesterkin is playing at a Conn Smythe level in this postseason. To make matters even more difficult for the Panthers, Vincent Trocheck and Alexis Lafreniere have joined in on the offensive bonanza.

Not many teams could overcome the amount of skill at the top of the Rangers' lineup, but the Panthers might be up to the task. Florida has plenty of its own skill, with 57-goal scorer Sam Reinhart and Selke Trophy winner Aleksander Barkov in the mix with Matthew Tkachhuk and Carter Verhaeghe. Perhaps more importantly, the Panthers have Gustav Forsling on the back end. One of the most underrated players in the NHL, Forsling can thrive in even the toughest matchups, and he did just that against David Pastrnak in the second round.

When it comes to special teams, the Rangers have the advantage, and it's not particularly close. Both teams have a strong penalty kill, but New York's power play is far more efficient and consistent than Florida's. The Rangers have two more power play goals (11) than the Panthers (9) in six fewer opportunities.

The goaltending battle features two incredibly talented Russians, but once again, the Rangers have an advantage there. Sergei Bobrovsky has been perfectly fine for the Panthers through two rounds, but Shesterkin has been borderline superhuman at times for the Rangers. That matchup doesn't bode well for Florida, but the Panthers did just overcome a goaltending disadvantage against Jeremy Swayman in the second round.

I'm fascinated to see how these competing styles play out on the ice, and I expect the closest series we've seen so far. Only one team can advance, though, and I believe the Panthers are just a smidge more complete than the Rangers. Pick -- Panthers beat Rangers, 4-3

(1) Stars vs. (2) Oilers

Chris Bengel:  The Stars had one of the more difficult paths to reach the conference finals. Dallas was matched up with the defending Stanley Cup champion Vegas Golden Knights in the opening round of the postseason, and the series ended up going seven games. In addition, the Stars faced off against the Colorado Avalanche in the second round, which resulted in a series victory in six games. Taking on the last two Stanley Cup champions isn't exactly the most ideal way to start off the playoffs, but if nothing else it did prove that the Stars are capable.

Entering the Stanley Cup Playoffs, the play of goaltender Jake Oettinger was certainly a hot-button issue after some struggles during the regular season. It's safe to say that Oettinger has saved his best hockey for the most important time of the year. Entering the Western Conference Final, the veteran netminder has tallied a record of 8-5-0 to go along with a 2.09 goals-against-average and a .918 save percentage. According to Money Puck, Oettinger has recorded a .966 save percentage when facing unblocked shots, so he's made some huge saves along the way.

On top of getting supreme production in the crease, Dallas has been a lethal goal-scoring team throughout the season. After all, this is a team that finished third in the NHL in goals-per-game (3.59), and tallied at least four goals in three of their six games against the Avalanche in their previous series. The Stars have an abundance of goal scorers with eight players netting at least 20 goals during the regular season. Forward Wyatt Johnston has been on an absolute heater with seven playoff goals, including a pair of two-goal performances. If center Roope Hintz is ready to go for the majority of the series, it's hard not to like the Stars' chances.

If the Oilers are going to win this series, they're going to have to continue to excel on the power-play. Edmonton has converted 37.5% of their man-advantage opportunities during the playoffs. On the other hand, the Stars rank 11th among playoff teams with just a 69.2% penalty-kill rate. If there's an area where the Oilers can have the upper hand, it's definitely on the power-play.  Pick -- Stars beat Oilers 4-2

Austin Nivison:  Throughout these playoffs, the Stars have displayed their elite depth and versatility. One night, Jamie Benn is coming up with a big play. The next night, Matt Duchene scores a clutch goal. Seemingly every night, Wyatt Johnston does something amazing while cementing himself as a household name.

The real X-factor for the Stars could very well be defenseman Chris Tanev, acquired ahead of the trade deadline. Tanev gives Dallas a valuable shutdown option to throw on the ice against Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. In the second round, Tanev got a heavy dose of Nathan MacKinnon and fared extremely well. The Vancouver Canucks just gave the Stars a blueprint for how to contain McDavid, and Tanev will be tasked with executing it on the ice.

The Oilers, on the other hand, are here despite just two postseason goals from McDavid. That's because Zach Hyman (11 goals) and Draisaitl (8) have been feasting while McDavid distributes to the tune of 19 assists. A decent chunk of that production has come on the power play, and that is the clearest edge for the Oilers in this series. That unit has converted on 37.5% of its opportunities, and it can tilt games in Edmonton's favor.

That said, the Oilers' special teams advantage may not be as big as it was against the Canucks. The Stars' power play is operating at a 29.0% clip, which is a notable improvement over Vancouver's paltry 13.9% conversion rate.

The biggest difference between these two teams is in the crease. The Stars have a bona fide No. 1 goaltender in Jake Oettinger, and the Oilers had to split minutes in their previous series between Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard. Oettinger has a .918 save percentage in the playoffs. Skinner and Pickard have combined for a .888 save percentage. If those trends continue, the Oilers will be in trouble.

I anticipate this being a back-and-forth affair, but the Stars' depth and goaltending will prove to be too much for the Oilers' star power to overcome.  Pick -- Stars beat Oilers 4-3
