What is antithesis? Here’s a quick and simple definition:

Antithesis is a figure of speech that juxtaposes two contrasting or opposing ideas, usually within parallel grammatical structures. For instance, Neil Armstrong used antithesis when he stepped onto the surface of the moon in 1969 and said, "That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind." This is an example of antithesis because the two halves of the sentence mirror each other in grammatical structure, while together the two halves emphasize the incredible contrast between the individual experience of taking an ordinary step, and the extraordinary progress that Armstrong's step symbolized for the human race.

Some additional key details about antithesis:

  • Antithesis works best when it is used in conjunction with parallelism (successive phrases that use the same grammatical structure), since the repetition of structure makes the contrast of the content of the phrases as clear as possible.
  • The word "antithesis" has another meaning, which is to describe something as being the opposite of another thing. For example, "love is the antithesis of selfishness." This guide focuses only on antithesis as a literary device.

Antithesis and Parallelism

Often, but not always, antithesis works in tandem with parallelism . In parallelism, two components of a sentence (or pair of sentences) mirror one another by repeating grammatical elements. The following is a good example of both antithesis and parallelism:

To err is human , to forgive divine .

The two clauses of the sentence are parallel because each starts off with an infinitive verb and ends with an adjective ("human" and "divine"). The mirroring of these elements then works to emphasize the contrast in their content, particularly in the very strong opposite contrast between "human" and "divine."

Antithesis Without Parallelism

In most cases, antitheses involve parallel elements of the sentence—whether a pair of nouns, verbs, adjectives, or other grammar elements. However, it is also possible to have antithesis without such clear cut parallelism. In the Temptations Song "My Girl," the singer uses antithesis when he says:

"When it's cold outside , I've got the month of May ."

Here the sentence is clearly cut into two clauses on either side of the comma, and the contrasting elements are clear enough. However, strictly speaking there isn't true parallelism here because "cold outside" and "month of May" are different types of grammatical structures (an adjective phrase and a noun phrase, respectively).

Antithesis vs. Related Terms

Three literary terms that are often mistakenly used in the place of antithesis are juxtaposition , oxymoron , and foil . Each of these three terms does have to do with establishing a relationship of difference between two ideas or characters in a text, but beyond that there are significant differences between them.

Antithesis vs. Juxtaposition

In juxtaposition , two things or ideas are placed next to one another to draw attention to their differences or similarities. In juxtaposition, the pairing of two ideas is therefore not necessarily done to create a relationship of opposition or contradiction between them, as is the case with antithesis. So, while antithesis could be a type of juxtaposition, juxtaposition is not always antithesis.

Antithesis vs. Oxymoron

In an oxymoron , two seemingly contradictory words are placed together because their unlikely combination reveals a deeper truth. Some examples of oxymorons include:

  • Sweet sorrow
  • Cruel kindness
  • Living dead

The focus of antithesis is opposites rather than contradictions . While the words involved in oxymorons seem like they don't belong together (until you give them deeper thought), the words or ideas of antithesis do feel like they belong together even as they contrast as opposites. Further, antitheses seldom function by placing the two words or ideas right next to one another, so antitheses are usually made up of more than two words (as in, "I'd rather be among the living than among the dead").

Antithesis vs. Foil

Some Internet sources use "antithesis" to describe an author's decision to create two characters in a story that are direct opposites of one another—for instance, the protagonist and antagonist . But the correct term for this kind of opposition is a foil : a person or thing in a work of literature that contrasts with another thing in order to call attention to its qualities. While the sentence "the hare was fast, and the tortoise was slow" is an example of antithesis, if we step back and look at the story as a whole, the better term to describe the relationship between the characters of the tortoise and the hare is "foil," as in, "The character of the hare is a foil of the tortoise."

Antithesis in Charles Dickens' A Tale of Two Cities

In the famous opening lines of A Tale of Two Cities , Dickens sets out a flowing list of antitheses punctuated by the repetition of the word "it was" at the beginning of each clause (which is itself an example of the figure of speech anaphora ). By building up this list of contrasts, Dickens sets the scene of the French Revolution that will serve as the setting of his tale by emphasizing the division and confusion of the era. The overwhelming accumulation of antitheses is also purposefully overdone; Dickens is using hyperbole to make fun of the "noisiest authorities" of the day and their exaggerated claims. The passage contains many examples of antithesis, each consisting of one pair of contrasting ideas that we've highlighted to make the structure clearer.

It was the best of times , it was the worst of times , it was the age of wisdom , it was the age of foolishness , it was the epoch of belief , it was the epoch of incredulity , it was the season of Light , it was the season of Darkness , it was the spring of hope , it was the winter of despair , we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven , we were all going direct the other way —in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only.

Antithesis in John Milton's Paradise Lost

In this verse from Paradise Lost , Milton's anti-hero , Satan, claims he's happier as the king of Hell than he could ever have been as a servant in Heaven. He justifies his rebellion against God with this pithy phrase, and the antithesis drives home the double contrast between Hell and Heaven, and between ruling and serving.

Better to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven.

Antithesis in William Shakespeare's Othello

As the plot of Othello nears its climax , the antagonist of the play, Iago, pauses for a moment to acknowledge the significance of what is about to happen. Iago uses antithesis to contrast the two opposite potential outcomes of his villainous plot: either events will transpire in Iago's favor and he will come out on top, or his treachery will be discovered, ruining him.

In this passage, the simple word "either" functions as a cue for the reader to expect some form of parallelism, because the "either" signals that a contrast between two things is coming.

Antithesis in William Shakespeare's Hamlet

Shakespeare's plays are full of antithesis, and so is Hamlet's most well-known "To be or not to be" soliloquy . This excerpt of the soliloquy is a good example of an antithesis that is not limited to a single word or short phrase. The first instance of antithesis here, where Hamlet announces the guiding question (" to be or not to be ") is followed by an elaboration of each idea ("to be" and "not to be") into metaphors that then form their own antithesis. Both instances of antithesis hinge on an " or " that divides the two contrasting options.

Antithesis in T.S. Eliot's "Four Quartets"

In this excerpt from his poem "Four Quartets," T.S. Eliot uses antithesis to describe the cycle of life, which is continuously passing from beginning to end, from rise to fall, and from old to new.

Antithesis in Green Lantern's Oath

Comic book writers know the power of antithesis too! In this catchy oath, Green Lantern uses antithesis to emphasize that his mission to defeat evil will endure no matter the conditions.

While most instances of antithesis are built around an "or" that signals the contrast between the two parts of the sentence, the Green Lantern oath works a bit differently. It's built around an implied "and" (to be technical, that first line of the oath is an asyndeton that replaces the "and" with a comma), because members of the Green Lantern corps are expressing their willingness to fight evil in all places, even very opposite environments.

Many well-known speeches contain examples of antithesis. Speakers use antithesis to drive home the stakes of what they are saying, sometimes by contrasting two distinct visions of the future.

Antithesis in Patrick Henry's Speech to the Second Virginia Convention, 1775

This speech by famous American patriot Patrick Henry includes one of the most memorable and oft-quoted phrases from the era of the American Revolution. Here, Henry uses antithesis to emphasize just how highly he prizes liberty, and how deadly serious he is about his fight to achieve it.

In this song, the singer uses a pair of metaphors to describe the feeling of joy that his lover brings him. This joy is expressed through antithesis, since the singer uses the miserable weather of a cloudy, cold day as the setting for the sunshine-filled month of May that "his girl" makes him feel inside, emphasizing the power of his emotions by contrasting them with the bleak weather.

Why Do Writers Use Antithesis?

Fundamentally, writers of all types use antithesis for its ability to create a clear contrast. This contrast can serve a number of purposes, as shown in the examples above. It can:

  • Present a stark choice between two alternatives.
  • Convey magnitude or range (i.e. "in brightest day, in darkest night" or "from the highest mountain, to the deepest valley").
  • Express strong emotions.
  • Create a relationship of opposition between two separate ideas.
  • Accentuate the qualities and characteristics of one thing by placing it in opposition to another.

Whatever the case, antithesis almost always has the added benefit of making language more memorable to listeners and readers. The use of parallelism and other simple grammatical constructions like "either/or" help to establish opposition between concepts—and opposites have a way of sticking in the memory.

WEDNESDAY PUZZLE — Having spent the last few days in bed recovering from a bug — but enjoying Wordplay, thanks to my colleagues — I can attest to the restorative effects of leisurely distractions. I convalesced with a cocktail of old movies, crosswords and frantic trips to the patio to stare at my soon-to-be-thriving vegetable garden (the red kale is doing well, thank you). How lovely to be reminded, once back at my desk, that one of these wonderful distractions is, in fact, my day job.

Today’s crossword was constructed by Jeanne Breen and Jeff Chen. The elixirs in their theme may not be the kind that doctors recommend for getting over a cold, but the joke that connected them all made me laugh — which really is the best medicine of all.

Today’s Theme

Bartenders who solve crosswords are finally having their day. The entries at 17-, 26-, and 36-/38-Across feature ingredient combinations for various cocktails, and our first job is to name them. Safe to say, this was not my forte: I can barely say “I’ll take a dry gin martini” without making it sound like a question. This is an example of why using your crossings — a skill we cover in our (beginner-friendly!) guide to solving crosswords — can make all the difference for a successful solve.

“Vodka + coffee liqueur + Irish cream + heavy cream” make up a MUDSLIDE (17A). Combine “Light rum + dark rum + orange juice + passion fruit syrup,” and you’ve got a HURRICANE (26A). And if you light “rum + brandy + pineapple juice + orange juice + orgeat syrup” on fire — only for cocktail-making purposes, please — you get a FLAMING VOLCANO (36/38A).

The names of these drinks imply danger — and that, dear reader, is what makes each clue a RECIPE FOR DISASTER (46/56A).

Tricky Clues

19A. One definition of the word “Skimpy” refers specifically to body-baring clothing. Here, the term describes a more general lacking quality: MEASLY.

24A. It brings me no pleasure to inform those of you who may be beginning to solve crosswords that, yes, an entry can just be a string of consonants. But we usually get a hint in the clue: “Some LG products,” for example, uses a brand name that consists of only consonants. Its answer, HD TVS, follows suit.

31A. The first time that I (a Canadian) got stuck on the clue “ ___ Miss,” my partner (an American) answered automatically: OLE. The University of Mississippi is simply known as OLE Miss, though the origins of the nickname are somewhat less simple to identify.

64A. These “Hard knocks?” aren’t the kind that made the orphans in “Annie” so weary. They’re RAPS .

3D. If you are “In the thick of things, so to speak,” you may be MIDSTREAM.

7D. Crossword purists may balk at the inclusion of a certain article in this entry for “Currency debut of 2002,” THE EURO. (While EURO has appeared over 300 times in past puzzles, THE EURO has appeared only twice.)

18D. So long as car companies keep releasing models with common nouns as names, crossword constructors will keep using those names to trick you. “Explorers and others, in brief” features a veiled capital, which is a hidden proper noun (in this case, it’s Explorers). Ford Explorers are S.U.V.S.

Jeanne Breen: Just a little over a year after diving into crossword construction, I’m thrilled to be making my New York Times debut in collaboration with Jeff Chen. I’m an infectious disease physician, an instructor at Yale School of Medicine and a consultant to the biopharmaceutical industry. When not working, there’s a good chance you’ll find me swimming laps, reading or being amused by my Chihuahua, Griffin. In April of 2023, after many years of solving crosswords, I decided I wanted to learn how to construct them. I took Brooke Husic and Natan Last’s four-session construction course, bought Patrick Berry’s “Crossword Constructor’s Handbook,” consulted several online tools and set about attempting to create my own puzzles. When I contacted the Times puzzle editors about possibly connecting with a mentor, Tracy Bennett pointed me in the direction of Jeff, who couldn’t have been more gracious toward this rookie. We batted ideas back and forth across the continent via email (I’m in Connecticut, Jeff’s in Seattle), testing out phrases that might generate good themes. Jeff mentioned RECIPE FOR DISASTER, and I immediately thought of HURRICANE and MUDSLIDE — and Dairy Queen’s Blizzard treat, which didn’t end up in the final version. Once we had our final theme set, Jeff let me take the lead in laying out the grid and was both encouraging and patient as I did so. Filling the grid was similarly collaborative. In addition to serving as a wonderful new hobby, constructing has introduced me, both in person and virtually, to so many inspiring, encouraging, friendly and witty people from whom I know I’ll continue to learn. Janis Paige, star of Hollywood and Broadway, dies at 101

Janis Paige, a popular actor in Hollywood and in Broadway musicals and comedies who danced with Fred Astaire, toured with Bob Hope and continued to perform into her 90s, has died. She was 101.

Paige died Sunday of natural causes at her Los Angeles home, longtime friend Stuart Lampert said Monday.

Paige starred on Broadway with Jackie Cooper in the mystery-comedy, “Remains to be Seen” and appeared with John Raitt in the smash hit musical “The Pajama Game.”

Her other films included a Hope comedy, “Bachelor in Paradise”; the Doris Day comedy “Please Don’t Eat the Daisies” and “Follow the Boys.”

In 2018, she added her voice to the #MeToo movement, alleging an assault when she was 22 by the late department-store heir Alfred Bloomingdale, who died in 1982.

“I could feel his hands, not only on my breasts, but seemingly everywhere. He was big and strong, and I began to fight, kick, bite and scream,” she wrote. “At 95, time is not on my side, and neither is silence. I simply want to add my name and say, ‘Me too.’”

Paige’s big break came in wartime when she sang an operatic aria for servicemen at the Hollywood Canteen. MGM hired her a day later for a brief role in “Bathing Beauty” — she spoke two lines in the film, which starred Esther Williams and Red Skelton — then dropped her.

The same day, Warner Bros. signed her and cast her in a dramatic segment of the all-star movie “Hollywood Canteen.” Her contract started at $150 a week. “I earned more per week than my mother had made in a month during the Great Depression,” she recalled in The Hollywood Reporter in 2018.

Her salary rose to $1,000 weekly as the studio kept her busy in lightweight films such as “Two Guys from Milwaukee,” “The Time, the Place and the Girl,” Love and Learn,” “Always Together,” “Wallflower” and “Romance on the High Seas,” which marked Doris Day’s film debut.

Meanwhile, she had changed her name from Donna May Tjaden, adopting her grandfather’s name of Paige. She took her first name from Elsie Janis, famed for entertaining troops in World War I.

Paige’s contract expired in 1949, at a time when studios were unloading talent because of the inroads of television. “That was a jolt,” she remarked in 1963. “It meant I was washed up at 25.”

She took her talents to Broadway, where she starred in “Remains to Be Seen” (her role would be snatched by June Allyson for the screen adaptation), and starred as Babe opposite Raitt as Sid in the original production of “The Pajama Game,” directed in 1954 by George Abbott. (Doris Day would take her role in the film version.)

MGM producer Arthur Freed caught her nightclub act at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles and offered her a part opposite Astaire in “Silk Stockings,” also co-starring Cyd Charisse. The film is famous for her and Astaire spoofing the newfangled movie gimmicks in the Cole Porter number “Stereophonic Sound,” including swinging from a chandelier.

“I was one mass of bruises. I didn’t know how to fall. I didn’t know how to get down on a table — I didn’t know how to save myself because I was never a classic dancer,” she told the Miami Herald in 2016.

In May 2003, Paige resumed entertaining after a long absence. She opened a show she called “The Third Act” at San Francisco’s Plush Room. She told stories about Astaire, Frank Sinatra and others and sang tunes from her films and stage musicals.

Chad Jones, reviewer for the Alameda Times-Star, commented that at 80 “the charming Paige shows a vitality, verve and spirit that performers half her age would envy.”

Paige grew up in Tacoma, Washington. Her father deserted the family when she was 4, and her mother eked out a living at the Bank of Tacoma.

“We always had enough to eat,” Paige told the Saturday Evening Post in 1963, “but nothing to spare. My mother worked so hard. And she used to keep saying that she wished I’d been born a boy, so I could help out more. I always wanted to be a success for her, to make up for my father.”

After leaving Warner Bros., she turned to TV, starring in a 1955-1956 TV series, “It’s Always Jan” and playing recurring roles in “Flamingo Road,” “Santa Barbara,” “Eight Is Enough,” “Capitol,” “Fantasy Island” and “Trapper Jon, M.D.” On “All in the Family,” she played a diner waitress who becomes involved with Carroll O’Connor’s Archie Bunker.

Paige replaced Angela Lansbury in the New York production of “Mame” in 1968 on Broadway and toured with the show in 1969. She also toured in “Gypsy,” “Annie Get Your Gun,” “Born Yesterday” and “The Desk Set.” Her last time on Broadway was in 1984’s “Alone Together.”

She also supplied glamor for Hope’s Christmas visits to Cuba and the Caribbean in 1960, Japan and South Korea in 1962, and Vietnam in 1964. She sang in clubs with Sammy Davis Jr., Alan King, Dinah Shore and Perry Como.

In 2020, her autobiography, “Reading Between the Lines: A Memoir,” was published, recounting her connections with Frank Sinatra, Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, David Niven, Henry Fonda, Clark Gable and Lucille Ball.

She had two brief marriages, to San Francisco restaurateur Frank Martinelli and to writer-producer Arthur Stander. In 1962 she married songwriter Ray Gilbert, who won an Oscar for the song “Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Da” from Disney’s “Song of the South.” He died in 1976, and she assumed management of his music company.

The Trump verdict is a triumph for the rule of law.

On Thursday, when a Manhattan jury found Donald Trump guilty of 34 criminal felonies in an attempt to influence the 2016 presidential election, it was a stunning and crucial reminder that no one is above the law — not even a president or a former president. While Trump has repeatedly argued that he could not be held accountable in this or other cases against him , our justice system proved the law can and should be applied equally.

When the New York grand jury subpoenaed Trump’s financial records in 2019, he went to federal court and argued that as president he was immune from such scrutiny. In July 2020, in Trump v. Vance, the Supreme Court ruled against then-President Trump and stressed that a grand jury has the right to every person’s evidence and being president provided no immunity from a subpoena.

After being indicted, Trump argued to the New York state trial court that he could not be prosecuted because he took the alleged actions — writing the checks and falsifying the business records through hush-money payments to adult film star Stormy Daniels — after his inauguration as president . The court rightly rejected this and refused to dismiss the case. Trump’s lawyers tried every imaginable argument to have the case thrown out, including repeatedly going to the court of appeals for relief, but there was no legal basis for having the prosecution dismissed.

Trump and his supporters attacked the Manhattan prosecutors, the judge, the judge’s family, and the witnesses in vituperative and harsh language. Some of the most powerful people in this country seemed to be trying to use their power and influence to do all they could to intimidate those involved.

But the case was tried and 12 jurors, chosen in the manner of all juries, listened to all of the evidence and rendered a stunning verdict on all 34 counts. They did so because the evidence was overwhelming that Trump authorized payment of hush money to Daniels, illegally concealed the payments as business expenses, and did so to help his chances of being elected president. When all of the rhetoric is swept aside, the jury’s verdict was about the clear evidence that Trump violated the law.

Trump, of course, can and will appeal. But New York Supreme Court Justice Juan Merchan did a superb job under the most difficult of circumstances and the Trump legal team will be hard-pressed to find successful issues for appeal.

There remain many questions. What sentence will Trump receive ? Each of the 34 felony charges carries up to a $5,000 fine and four-year prison sentence, with a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. Although Trump has no prior criminal record, the jury’s decisive verdict on 34 counts and Trump’s obvious lack of remorse could lead to a prison sentence. If sentenced to prison, what happens if Trump is elected president in November? Would that preempt New York from carrying out its sentence and possibly imprisoning him? No former president ever has been convicted, so there is no way to know what the Supreme Court would decide.

Trump’s supporters say that this is what makes the prosecution and conviction so dangerous. They say that it is setting a precedent for what is common in some other countries, with former chief executives being tried and convicted . But the message is exactly the opposite, one that is laudable and even essential in a democracy. It is a reminder to all, including those who hold the highest offices, that if they violate the law they can be prosecuted and held legally accountable. Trump was prosecuted and convicted not because he was being politically persecuted while other former presidents were excused but because he showed so little regard for the law.

Trump and his supporters have decried the verdict as being nothing but a political vendetta. They have the constitutional right to say what they want. But nothing they say can erase the fact that a jury heard all the evidence and found Trump guilty on all counts.

The jury’s verdict is historic. Most of all, it is a triumph for the rule of law in this country.

Simon Cowell flouted the " America's Got Talent " bylaws on Tuesday's episode to issue his second golden buzzer of the season for an "epic" ( Howie Mandel 's description) and "breathtaking" (per Sofía Vergara ) drone show by Sky Elements.

It's a new season with new rules, apparently: Cowell, who created the show, paved the way for all of the judges (as well as host Terry Crews and the audience) to have two Golden Buzzers to dole out in Season 19. 

Episode 2 had more goofs than last week's premiere — which featured a creepy child contortionist, a gravity-defying ballerina and a singing janitor who's gone viral — as the judges (including Heidi Klum ), gave out near-immediate buzzers to some acts to boot them off the "AGT" stage ASAP.

Among the singers, synchronized dancers, musicians and circus talents of varying abilities was powerhouse vocalist Liv Warfield, who has shared a stage with Prince and gave an impressive showing with a full jazz band. The energetic performance earned Cowell's first Golden Buzzer.

Meanwhile, the other singing act, North Carolina country rock band Ashes & Arrows, divided the judges with their song (“This was a great song in a pub” Mandel said to massive boos), though they ultimately made it through.

Sofia Vergara begs 'Make it stop' as performer swallows huge scissors

"Asia's Got Talent" alum Bao Cuong showed off a stomach-churning — yet awe-striking — routine involving a massive pair of scissors, knives and a pair of drums attached to his throat and eyelids.

The performance was not for the faint of heart, and one point Vergara walked away from the table before begging Cowell to "Make it stop." Cuong first drove a knife into each of his nostrils as a warm-up. After this appetizer for the horrified crowd, he removed them and attached clips to his eyes before swallowing a comically massive pair of scissors.

He capped off his performance by lifting what seemed to be three decorative pots with chains attached to his eyes and throat. "I do this every day, like eating rice," he told the judges in Vietnamese, via a translator, once the sharp objects had been safely removed from his facial orifices.

Cowell had the opposite reaction from his colleagues: It was "one of my favorite acts tonight," he said.

"I hope that your mother never sees you doing this," Vergara told Cuong. He replied: "My mother approved this."

Despite some reluctance on Vergara's part, the judges awarded the performer four yeses.

Tanzanian acrobats balance on each other's heads, shoulders: 'Heart-stopping'

Tanzania's Hakuna Matata Acrobatic also tempted fate Tuesday night with a "heart-stopping" routine that had the four members doing gravity-defying moves to make various human pyramids.

As one acrobat balanced on a small platform atop a rolling cylinder, he held his teammates aloft while they climbed on top of his shoulders. One move, which seemingly had one performer upside-down and balancing with his head atop another man's as he balanced on the rolling platform, appeared to evade the acrobats.

They fell (safely) several times, causing a stressed-out Vergara to seek comfort from Klum. In their peak pose, one man held himself aloft with just one arm on the head of his colleague, who was standing on the shoulders of two men balanced on the precarious board.

Despite the earlier hiccup, four stuck the landing on their other moves, earning a "yes" from each judge.

"I was on the edge of my seat. I was so nervous for the four of you," Klum said. "It was incredible to watch."

"It's acts like this that give me one word, and that is: Unbelievable," Mandel said.
