Two cases about Hertz claimed top spots in 2021's Top 40 Most Popular Case Studies

Two cases on the uses of debt and equity at Hertz claimed top spots in the CRDT’s (Case Research and Development Team) 2021 top 40 review of cases.

Hertz (A) took the top spot. The case details the financial structure of the rental car company through the end of 2019. Hertz (B), which ranked third in CRDT’s list, describes the company’s struggles during the early part of the COVID pandemic and its eventual need to enter Chapter 11 bankruptcy. 

The success of the Hertz cases was unprecedented for the top 40 list. Usually, cases take a number of years to gain popularity, but the Hertz cases claimed top spots in their first year of release. Hertz (A) also became the first ‘cooked’ case to top the annual review, as all of the other winners had been web-based ‘raw’ cases.

Besides introducing students to the complicated financing required to maintain an enormous fleet of cars, the Hertz cases also expanded the diversity of case protagonists. Kathyrn Marinello was the CEO of Hertz during this period and the CFO, Jamere Jackson is black.

Sandwiched between the two Hertz cases, Coffee 2016, a perennial best seller, finished second. “Glory, Glory, Man United!” a case about an English football team’s IPO made a surprise move to number four.  Cases on search fund boards, the future of malls,  Norway’s Sovereign Wealth fund, Prodigy Finance, the Mayo Clinic, and Cadbury rounded out the top ten.

Other year-end data for 2021 showed:

• Online “raw” case usage remained steady as compared to 2020 with over 35K users from 170 countries and all 50 U.S. states interacting with 196 cases.
• Fifty four percent of raw case users came from outside the U.S..
• The Yale School of Management (SOM) case study directory pages received over 160K page views from 177 countries with approximately a third originating in India followed by the U.S. and the Philippines.
• Twenty-six of the cases in the list are raw cases.
• A third of the cases feature a woman protagonist.
• Orders for Yale SOM case studies increased by almost 50% compared to 2020.
• The top 40 cases were supervised by 19 different Yale SOM faculty members, several supervising multiple cases.

CRDT compiled the Top 40 list by combining data from its case store, Google Analytics, and other measures of interest and adoption.

This research explored the management devices followed in successful schools in the Indian context. In-depth case studies of three successful Navodaya schools were carried out. The schools were identified on the basis of the academic performance of students in the last three years in the national examinations and their participation in co-curricular activities at the regional and national levels. The study employed triangulation approach in which data were collected employing different methodologies (personal interviews, observations, and questionnaires/schedules) from various categories of respondents (principals, teachers, students, parents, and in some cases alumni) by a team of researchers. Results indicated that successful schools adopted participative management system in running day-to-day activities of the schools, gave people autonomy but also made them accountable for successful completion of the tasks, followed democratic methods of taking decisions, gave priority to the welfare of students, maintained supportive relationship with teachers, attempted to establish linkage with parents, set up higher and higher goals for themselves and the schools, adopted innovative pedagogical methods and evaluation devices, and recognized good work of the teachers. The results have implications for other schools where some of these devices can be tried out to improve their performance.

Exploring variations in the implementation of a health system level policy intervention to improve maternal and child health outcomes in resource limited settings: A qualitative multiple case study from Uganda

Background Despite growing literature, few studies have explored the implementation of policy interventions to reduce maternal and perinatal mortality in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Even fewer studies explicitly articulate the theoretical approaches used to understand contextual influences on policy implementation. This under-use of theory may account for the limited understanding of the variations in implementation processes and outcomes. We share findings from a study exploring how a health system-level policy intervention was implemented to improve maternal and child health outcomes in a resource limited LMIC.

Methods Our qualitative multiple case study was informed by the Normalization Process Theory (NPT). It was conducted across eight districts and among ten health facilities in Uganda, with 48 purposively selected participants. These included health care workers located at each of the case sites, policy makers from the Ministry of Health, and from agencies and professional associations. Data were collected using semi-structured, in-depth interviews to understand uptake and use of Uganda’s maternal and perinatal death surveillance and response (MPDSR) policy and were inductively and deductively analyzed using NPT constructs and subconstructs.

Results We identified six broad themes that may explain the observed variations in the implementation of the MPDSR policy. These include: 1) perception of the implementation of the policy, 2) leadership of the implementation process, 3) structural arrangements and coordination, 4) extent of management support and adequacy of resources, 5) variations in appraisal and reconfiguration efforts and 6) variations in barriers to implementation of the policy.

Conclusion and recommendations The variations in sense making and relational efforts, especially perceptions of the implementation process and leadership capacity, had ripple effects across operational and appraisal efforts. Adopting theoretically informed approaches to assessing the implementation of policy interventions is crucial, especially within resource limited settings.

After developing an application through which student from different location can access school information and take admission using online system. Fill admission form cost reduced , man power will be reduced. This project mainly aimed on developing a live project for school organization. This project can accessed by the user and clients with proper login credentials provided to them by the organization. This project will also handled by the administrator(Admin) who will monitor the whole project. The main objective of this project is to compute the fees of student studying in the organization. Also the objective includes maintainance of fee record of the students. An organization may contains hundred or more students so to keep the records of all of them , we need a system that is user-friendly and easy to understand and easy to operate. There are large number of students who pay all their fee through cash deposits or banks drafts to the school account in a specific bank branches. This method have proven inefficient in more ways than one. This system was developed using ASP.Net , C#(Sharp), Bootstrap, Css JavaScript and MySQL database.

The study sought to identify the existing financial methods of payment and examine its impact on fee paying in Takoradi Technical University formerly Takoradi Polytechnic. In this study, the qualitative research approach using the descriptive survey method was employed. Semi-structured interviews, as well as direct observations, were the forms of instrumentations used for the data collection where the university's staff, students, and bank service providers were purposively and conveniently sampled. Data was analysed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) method from the period of 2011-2020. The study revealed that the payment methods use in paying fees were traditional payment methods including; cash, cheque, banker's draft, and pay-in-slip. The new electronic payment instruments such as E-zwich, mobile phone, credit cards, and debit cards were yet to find their rhythm in the institution. There is a need for banks to establish branches or agencies on campus and adopt the electronic payment service system.

Abstract: The objective of the study was to establish how parents’ contributions in fee payment influence student academic performance in secondary schools in Nandi East Sub County. Its importance is seen in the fact that it will be of great significance to all head teachers when developing school budgets and plans like fee structures. This may help them consider several factors before issuing new fees structures, as the needs of parents will be highlighted. The county government and constituency bursary fund may use the study findings in determining the criteria in bursary allocation. The target population of this study comprised of secondary schools where the head teachers, teachers and the students were the targeted respondents. Descriptive study design was used while the participants consisted of 20 head teachers, 111 PTA members, 270 teachers and 826 Form Four students. The sample size the study was calculated 30% of the 290 respondents to arrive at 6 head teachers’ and 81 teachers, 33 PTA members and 248 students Questionnaire and interview schedule were used as data collection instruments. Descriptive and inferential analysis techniques were used in analyzing data with the help of Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS).Presentation of data was done using frequency tables, pie charts and graphs. The study findings showed that majority of parents were unable to complete their fee payment on time. The study recommended that, schools should devise methods through which fee payment can be made convenient rather than adopting a single fee payment policy that is discriminatory to students whose parents belong to low cadre level of society.

This study aimed to present the logical processes involved and determine the problems encountered by the students and personnel in-charge in the existing payment of other fees namely: PTA, SSC, and Departmental during enrolment at John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University. The respondents of this study are the following: Jinky Banatasa for the PTA; Karen Imalay for the SSC fee; Erwin Garcia for the Departmental fee for the College of Business; and the seventy two (72) students enrolled first semester at JBLFMU-Molo. This research used the Performance Information Economics Control Efficiency Service (PIECES) framework for the preparation of the instrument in the assessment of the existing system.
