Best-rated pen

Pilot FriXion Clicker Erasable, Refillable & Retractable Gel Ink Pens

“In a world of fake news, where you can’t trust an Instagram model who says she really lost weight using the skinny tea, this pen stands out as a beacon of hope,” writes one reviewer of this pen, which really does what it says on the package. “It claims to be an ink pen, and it is! It claims to be erasable, and it is.” ( We tested it and found that it erases “more cleanly and evenly than a pencil.”) Over 55,000 other five-star reviewers are just as impressed with this Pilot pen, and not just because you can erase its ink: “This pen is comfortable to hold, and it writes very smooth. It’s a lifesaver, a time saver, and my new favorite pen,” writes one self-proclaimed pen snob. And a college student who also uses this pen’s waste-saving refill feature likes that the pens “do not smudge and do not bleed through paper” and says they “would be miserable without them.” One reviewer notes, however, that the erasable quality of the ink is heat-activated, meaning there’s a chance that, “if put near high heat/sun/humidity, back pockets, etc., the ink will disappear.” They still give this pen five stars — claiming to be “flat-out addicted to these pens” — so it’s not a deal breaker, but it’s definitely important to keep in mind.

Best-rated (less expensive) pen

Paper Mate InkJoy 100ST Ballpoint Pens, Medium Point, 1.0mm, Assorted Colors

More than 80 percent of reviewers give this set of colored ballpoint pens five stars, and many can’t believe their value. “I was honestly shocked at the great quality of these pens,” writes one reviewer, who was fully prepared to throw them away in disappointment, but “was pleasantly surprised when I received these, they are terrific!” They add, “These pens are actually triangular, which very comfortably fits in your hand just perfect. I mean, these are no high end pens, but for everyday writing with cool colors, they hit the mark, greatly exceeded my expectations.” Others praise them for not smudging or skipping. “They’re easy to hold, write smoothly, don’t skip, and are just great pens to have around,” says one repeat buyer. Plus, “These pens write like butter,” raves another reviewer. The one issue you might run into with pens these good is keeping track of them. One reviewer writes “I just wish people in my office would quit stealing them.”

Best no-bleed pen

Sharpie Plastic Point Stick Water Resistant Pen, Ink, Fine, Black

“When Sharpie launched this pen that doesn’t bleed I did cartwheels,” says one reviewer, and nearly of a quarter of reviewers were just as excited about these no-bleed pens. “They do not smear while writing like so many other pens do,” says another. One says this claim holds up “even when using it to write on dinky recycled paper that I got from the dollar store, it doesn’t bleed out onto the pages below.” One leftie even says that they “don’t have trouble with these smudging.” Others just like the way these write. “Sharpie Pen is my go-to writing instrument for beautiful, permanent, ‘write on virtually anything’ writing needs,” one says. “Every single day. The sturdy, fine tip and smooth tip edges provide a consistently smooth, ‘get out of the way’ delivery of clean, smudge-proof penmanship.”

Best pen for lefties

Uni-Ball Jetstream Ballpoint

This pen has a vocal fanbase on Amazon, many of whom are lefties who appreciate its fast-drying ink that “dries almost instantly” and doesn’t smudge when they write. As one lefty says, “Being left-handed, I have always had a problem of ink smearing and making a mess, not just on me but also on the card or letter that I was writing. I also have not been able to find a pen that doesn’t skip, one that writes smoothly and just feels good using it. This pen solved all of my problems! I love using it. It puts the fun back into writing!” Another raves, “Writes really smooth and dries quickly. A must have for left-handed people!”

Best disposable fountain pen

Pilot Varsity Disposable Fountain Pens

About 45 percent of reviewers love the feeling of writing with a fountain pen. “This style of pen makes it easy to write neatly and quickly with a steady ink flow which does not require too much pressure,” one reports, adding, “This has a feel that is comparable to much more expensive pens.” This disposable fountain pen even made our list of the 100 best pens , and writer Karen Iorio Adelson called it “a gateway drug to the expensive world of fountain pen collecting because it’s so comfortable and downright fun to write with.” Another says, “I love the easy, smooth flow of ink, and the ability to add an artistic touch to my handwriting.” What people like even more is that these are disposable. The same user continues, “With a typical fountain pen, I often have the following problems. (1) The ink cartridges are small and they run out of ink quickly. That means I have to take extra cartridges with me wherever I go. (2) The nibs get clogged with ink and I have to place the nib under running water to get the ink flowing again. What a mess! None of those are problems with the Pilot Varsity pens. Each pen has plenty of ink which lasts a long time. I’ve never had a nib get clogged up. They are maintenance free.”

Best multicolor gel pen set

Paper Mate InkJoy Gel Pens, Assorted Colors

More than 85 percent of the over 26,000 reviewers gave the InkJoy gel pen five stars, and we thought it was the best of all the gel pens we tested (and came in 23, out of 100 overall, in our ranking ). One purchaser says they first tried these out on a co-worker’s recommendation, and they were “hooked within thirty seconds: First of all the ink dries quickly, so I didn’t smudge it, at all. Ever. Second, they write so smoothly. Third, the colors are vivid and bright and fourth, the pens feel nice in your hands! I have to hide these pens from everyone else because they are always trying to run off with them.” Purchasers tend to love the bright colors, the rubber grip, and the smooth quick-dry ink. “These pens have me finding excuses to write,” says one reviewer. “I generally hate gel pens because I smear them so quickly when I write, but these are amazing.”

Best multicolor pen set for bullet journaling

iBayam Journal Planner Pens

More than 200 five-star reviewers who bullet journal love this set of multicolor iBayam pens. “These exceeded my expectations,” writes one such reviewer who was looking for fine-tip pens with minimal bleed and likes that the pens also “write fluidly” and the colors are “bright and unique.” Another reviewer who purchased the set to help their daughter start bullet journaling reports that the pens don’t bleed through paper and have minimal ghosting and no smudging. And a third reviewer praises the pens’ “vibrant” colors and how thinly and precisely they write, which makes it “so much easier to design my bullet journal.”

Best multicolor pen set for adult coloring books

Stabilo Point 88 Fineliner Pens, 0.4mm, Assorted Colors

Over 200 reviewers mention using this Stabilo pen set for adult coloring books . “I purchased these because my wife was frustrated that colored pencils did not have a fine enough tip for her adult coloring books,” one reviewer writes, explaining, “Most of the new adult coloring books have very small detailed patterns and these fine tip pens are perfect for that. Plus, so far the ink seems to be lasting nicely, and the color on paper is bright and rich. We have since bought several more packs of these for gifts.” Another happy purchaser says they’re great general use pens and work well for all sorts of craft projects: “These pens are way nice than I expected. I purchased them as liner pens for some of my watercolor paintings and discovered that they’re actually water soluble/blendable on watercolor paper. I use them LOTS for scrapbooking, adult coloring books, watercolors. The colors really pop and they write very smoothly on most surfaces.”

Best pens for calligraphy

Tombow Fudenosuke Brush Pen (Soft Tip and Hard Tip)

“I just finished addressing 175 envelopes with one pen and would definitely recommend them to anyone looking to try brush calligraphy,” raves one reviewer, and many others agree that this two-pack of Tombow brush pens is an excellent choice for calligraphers. One purchaser even goes as far as saying, “There honestly isn’t any competition when it comes to brush pens. These two Tombow Fudenosuke Brush Pens are all you need for calligraphy and illustration.” Many amateur and experienced calligraphers chime in to say that this set is often recommended by calligraphy experts and calligraphy-focused websites. “These are GREAT brush pens if you are a calligrapher or hand letterer. They are very popular in the lettering community and they are some of my favorite pens to use! I love that it comes in a dual pack. The hard tip is great for beginners and the soft tip has a bit more flex to it and mimics more of a brush pen.” One reviewer says this makes for a great starter set, and even offers a helpful suggestion for new calligraphers: “Highly recommend them to anyone wanting to try a brush pen. Just remember: light strokes going up and heavy going down.”

Best 4-in-1 pen

BIC 4-Color Ballpoint Pen

This BIC 4-in-1 pen gets a lot of appreciation from purchasers who rely on color-coding for work and organization. As one reviewer writes, “Twenty years ago, my mother used these to highlight interesting things in our print copy of TV Guide. Today, I use them to code documents that require certain things be written in certain colors.” Another adds: “I love these pens especially for nursing work as I can color code labs/notes/to-do’s etc. There is a lot of information I put on a piece of paper and these pens do a great job helping me get everything done.” This one almost broke into the top ten in our list of the best pens , making a strong showing at No. 12. Editor Katy Schneider raved, “I love to use this for checklists — you can make the list with blue or black ink, then put little stars next to the urgent items in red ink. Do I sound crazy?”

Best fine-tip gel pen

uni-ball 207 Retractable Gel Pens, Micro Point, Black

“I don’t even know myself anymore. Except that I love these things. Heck I never knew I could have that kind of a relationship with a pen,” one reviewer writers. Another customer says they’re so in love with their pen that they even followed a classmate home who didn’t return their beloved Uni-Ball. It’s this pen’s fine tip that caused this reviewer to act so irrationally. Another reviewer who writes in “a thin loopy style” says, “That’s why I really enjoy the very fine tip of these pens; everything just looks so much neater.” Others love the pen’s “no-skip” smooth glide. One reports, “It writes like an angel gliding across a picturesque frozen lake on the most expensive ice skates.” Dozens also give these pens top marks for being long lasting. “You won’t find yourself scratching circles in scrap-paper trying to get the ink restarted… These things are ready to go when you are, until the last drop is gone.”

Best fine-tip ballpoint pen

Pilot Acroball PureWhite Ballpoint Pen, Assorted Colors, Black Ink

“The bane of all fine-point users — finding a fine point that is dark enough to actually see — has finally been solved,” writes one reviewer, who thinks the secret is in the pen’s ink. “Pilot calls the ink ‘Advanced,’ but for me, the better word would be ‘Perfected.’ It is the darkest black ink from a fine point pen that I’ve ever seen.” Many other happy purchasers agree, saluting the Acroball’s combination of a fine tip and a winning ink formula. “The ink is always smooth, never gums up, and very fine, leaving your writing neat, precise, and clean,” says one, while another adds that the fine tip actually makes their handwriting easier to read. “My handwriting, which is cursive/chicken scratch, is more legible thanks to the ultra fine point. The ink also dries super fast with minimal smudging and glides onto the paper as smooth as butter.” And finally, many love the design of these pens, highlighting the “unique white barrel” and the “vibrant and fun” accent colors.

Best extra-fine-tip pen

Type: Gel

“For those who prefer their points extra fine, this is the pen for you. Writing with it is like writing with a needlepoint,” said our writer Lauren Ro after testing this for our best-pens list — and nearly 500 five-star reviewers have similar praise. One reviewer in search of a finer, higher-quality pen writes, “I have found it! These pens are incredible! The point is superfine, and the ink comes out smoothly and perfectly. I don’t think I will write with anything else ever again.” Plenty of reviewers with small handwriting also appreciate this Pilot, including one who finds even 0.5mm pens too bold. These, however, are “incredibly smooth and really, really fine. No glops, skips, or anything when writing. Just smooth, thin lines.” And another who says their “note taking is next level” thanks to how neatly this pen can write adds that they’ve “given away several to random people who like a good pen, and everyone was a convert.”

Best extra-fine-tip pen for drawing

Pilot Precise V5 Stick Liquid Ink Rolling Ball Stick Pens, Extra Fine Point, Black Ink

Nearly 3,000 reviewers give this pen five stars, and many say it’s the tip that makes it so nice. “I like the extra fine version because it’s easier to write small with them which lends to writing much more quickly for me,” one explains. That extra-fine tip is also great for artists: “I even used them to create 24 illustrations for my book Mortuary Arts ,” writes one reviewer, adding, “These work as well for art as they do for writing, such a great flowing experience.” Even writers find it good for doodling, including Strategist writer Dominique Pariso , who said, “If you want to feel like a disaffected art student during your morning meeting, this one’s for you.” And though one reviewer points out they are a little pricey for a disposable pen, they are long-lasting, even with heavy use: “A single pen lasts for weeks, sometimes even months, at a time.”

Best felt-tip pen

Paper Mate Flair Felt Tip Pens

The Paper Mate Flair has a lot of friends in high places. Writer Lesley Arfin , Saucony creative director Chris Mahoney , and New York ’s own Jerry Saltz all told us they’re fans. We ranked them at No. 58 in our list of the best pens , and it’s a big hit with Amazon reviewers, too. As one purchaser puts it, “Who doesn’t love a rainbow of felt tip pens?” Many contrast the Paper Mate Flairs with Sharpies and say they prefer the Flairs because there’s less bleed-through and odor. “I love felt tip markers/pens, and am a big fan of using Sharpies for EVERYTHING. However, those tend to bleed through,” one writes, continuing, “Luckily, these fantastic markers have the great felt tip writing feel without the smell or bleed; they’re PERFECT for my new planner.” Another writes, “I really had zero purpose for felt tip pens except when it came to needing to draw on top of full color designs that had been printed off. And my new job just suddenly had me needing to do this constantly. Regular pens don’t show up well and Sharpies bleed through horribly. These are the perfect alternative and the color assortment made them even better.”

Best bold gel pen

Pilot G2 Premium Refillable & Retractable Rolling Ball Gel Pens, Bold Point, Blue Ink

“I don’t care if this product goes through the roof on pricing, I will never, ever, not once not ever, EVER, buy any other pen if it’s not a PILOT G2 Premium Refillable & Retractable Rolling Ball Gel Pens, Bold Point, Blue Ink, 12 Count (31257),” says one reviewer. And lots of other satisfied reviewers appreciate how boldly this pen writes. “The thicker ball point creates a much broader stroke (as expected), but also makes it easier to write on hard surfaces,” one says. Others just like the way it looks: “What I love about them is that they make a real ‘mark’ on the page. A bold one. One need not squint to see what’s there or what’s said, they can simply look with their normal eyes.” It’s also a smooth writing experience according to many. “The pen glides across the paper with less resistance, and the ink seems to dry more quickly,” one says, while another reviewer writes, “the soft grip and the smoothness of the ink on paper brought a tear to my eye.” If there is any drawback to these pens, “It writes so boldly, it may take an extra second or two before the ink dries,” but many are perfectly fine with that. Besides, according to one reviewer, “I have never experienced any of these Pilot G2s drying out.”

Best bold ballpoint pen

BIC Velocity Bold Retractable Ball Pen, Bold Point (1.6mm)

Reviewers who prefer a bold ballpoint pen praise this BIC one highly. “I have used this pen all the way up to multi-hundred dollar Mont Blanc pens and I prefer this one over those any day,” writes one reviewer with a pretty powerful testament for these plastic pens. It’s a nice option if you like “Thick, solid lines,” according to another reviewer. That’s because “these pens have 1.6 mm and are the boldest — thicker line of any pens I have bought.” And even with that extra girth, about a third of reviewers also describe the pen as smooth. “You don’t have any trouble getting ink onto the paper,” one reviewer reports. “It just kind of slides onto the page effortlessly.” Not only does the bold point make it easier to write, but “I think I write prettier with it,” according to one reviewer. Another reviewer even says their handwriting looked bubblier and rounder with this pen, while another thinks they’re so nice to use, they wrote their wedding thank-you cards with it. “Even paying bills by check is better.”

Best stick ballpoint pen

Pentel R.S.V.P. Stick Ballpoint Pen, 0.7mm

At under $6 for a pack of 12, the Pentel R.S.V.P. ballpoint pen is a great value. It’s also, as nearly 300 reviewers highlight, distinctly “smooth.” One writes, “These have been my favorite pens for years. Smooth writing with excellent control and no trailing.” Another adds, “The only thing I can say is that this is like the Cadillac of clear, smooth writing stick pens!” And while many like the more readily available medium-point 1.0mm model, the fine-point 0.7mm earns the most enthusiastic endorsements. “I’ve had other fine point pens that were hard to read due to skips and thinness in the printing, but none of that with these. Just sharp and strong, and the fine lines look tidier when writing small.”

Best gel pen with metal tip

Pentel EnerGel RTX Retractable Liquid Gel Pen, Medium, Assorted Colors

This set of gel pens is popular with reviewers looking for a smooth-writing gel pen in assorted color options. One teacher says, “These are my go-to teacher pens. I use them for grading papers, writing notes, and pretty much everything I do in the classroom on a daily basis. I love these pens and I’m so grateful they come in so many great colors.” Another reviewer writes that they’re great for note-taking or for organizing categories in a planner: “I LOVE these pens so much. They write very smoothly and do not smear. I like to use them for note-taking (and document-filling, with the more ‘professional’ colors) at work and school.” They add, “Love, love, love, and I’ll be using all of these until the very last drop of ink — then I’ll buy more!”

Best compact pen

Fischer Bullet Space Pen With Clip

Over 100 five-star reviewers praise the Fischer Bullet Space Pen’s “compact” build. One purchaser says, “I was amazed by how small this pen is when it’s closed. I mean, it’s quite literally something you can stuff in your pocket and for that it’s there.” And while many mention buying this because they wanted a small “pocket-sized” pen, they also appreciate that they can attach the cap to the opposite end, “extending the length of the pen to make it comfortable [to hold] while signing a document.” One particular review seems to sum up what so many appreciate about this pen: “The real reason to this pen is durability and portability. If you just want a pen for your office, get a box of Precise V5’s. If you want a pen to carry around, get this.”

Best pen with pocket clip

Cross Edge Jet Black Selectip Rollerball Pen

“It truly is a quality writing instrument,” says one reviewer, who thinks very highly of this pen. “The ink flow is smooth it is comfortable to hold and feels well balanced in the hand. The unique design and operating function make this a one of a kind.” The design is something several reviewers call out as a main selling point. “Whoever engineered this thing should have won some kind of prize,” writes one reviewer. “I can’t stop opening and closing this thing. It does so with such a satisfying ‘plunk.’ Takes two hands to open, one to close.” Others love the spring-loaded pocket clip, because, as one reviewer explains, “The end of the clip has a little roller wheel so it won’t wear down your clothes as you clip and unclip it multiple times per day.” And one reviewer concludes, “It writes smooth as silk with great action (friction of tip against paper) and provides an even deployment of ink on all paper surfaces I’ve tried it on, a true pleasure to write with.”

Best astronaut pen

Fisher Space AG7 Original Astronaut Space Pen

“The fact that this wonderful writing instrument is a standard-issue Astronaut pen is just a really cool bonus,” says one satisfied reviewer. Another appreciates that, “When you hold it you feel a connection to project Apollo and even the now-ended STS.” And while many are fans of real astronauts some just remember this pen from Seinfeld : “We are extreme Seinfeld fans and I got this for my husband from the episode about the Astronaut Pen. He knew immediately, of course, and it’s a great novelty item. Plus it’s a great PEN.” But really, this pen is more than just a novelty. The ink in this all-metal, ballpoint pen “flows well, drys quickly and writes cleanly,” according to one reviewer.

Best Writing Instruments Every Writer Should Have

Best Writing Instruments Every Writer Should Have

  • What's New

There are many writing tools in the market, but this article will help you to know some of the best writing instruments every writer should have. Writing is an art and a craft in itself that needs a lot of inspiration and thought. Writers and authors all over the world turn their ideas into words in a bid to educate, entertain, and motivate readers.

Whether you are a student, blogger, journalist, novelist, or just a person who loves to write, you can take your writing skills and productivity to the next level with the right set of instruments and tools.

Since 2011, the number of writers has increased by around 8% which is a great thing in today’s digital landscape. You’ll be wasting your time and energy if you don’t work with the right EDC pen and other essential equipment. Further, we’ll take a look at the best tools that every writer must possess.

Essential Writing Instruments for Every Writer

The basic need is a pen and paper if you are into writing. Apart from them, you’ll need several things to develop your story, fork out details, and assess the outcome of your writing. Make sure to have the following stuff in your inventory.

Paper Notebook

First and foremost, you will need a high-quality paper notebook to write on. Depending on your use, you can go for one with or without lines. If you want it for education, a lined notebook will be great for you.

If you are more into sketching, then a notebook without lines and blank papers will be best. Make sure to buy a notebook with high-quality paper so that you can use your bolt action pen smoothly on it. Low-quality paper is very rough and difficult to write on.

High-Quality Pen

The most important instrument you’ll need is your pen. You can choose from ball, gel, fountain, click, etc. for your pen needs. If you want reliability and durability, then a ballpoint pen will be the best choice. It is quick-drying and can write on different types of papers and surfaces.

Read: How To Write A Story

People who are into calligraphy and creative writing usually go for a bolt action fountain pen. These offer a smooth writing experience and your handwriting will also improve.

Comfortable Chair & Table

An ergonomic chair and table work wonders for writers, especially those who have to sit in a single place for hours. If you do not feel comfortable in your workspace, you will get tired soon, affecting your productivity levels.

A comfortable chair will offer you back and posture support, and you can adjust it accordingly. Go for one with cushioned materials, armrests, portability, and durability. It is hard to write sitting or lying down on a bed or sofa, and an ergonomic chair and table are essential for you.

Whitener or Correction Pen

When you made mistakes while writing in school with a pencil, you rubbed it off with an eraser. However, you don’t have that privilege when writing with a pen. Once the ink gets onto the paper and dries off, you cannot erase or remove it. You will have to use a whitener or correction pen to rectify your errors. Just apply the whitener on your mistake or use the correction pen to whiten out the part where you made mistakes. It’s a very useful tool because it is impossible to make zero mistakes while writing.

Dictionary & Encyclopedia

You should know what you are writing about and have a good vocabulary to ensure high-quality, error-free writing. Every language is vast with so many words and phrases in them. A dictionary will help you know the meaning of different words and craft nice sentences.

Whenever you need clarification about anything, use your encyclopedia or dictionary to gain proper knowledge and information about it. Some writers skip this but it is a nice thing to possess for writers.

Voice Recorder

Yes, you are writing down your thoughts on paper, but speaking out loud while writing and recording your voice will work wonders for you.

You can hear what you have written down and spot potential errors and mistakes in your sentences. Also, you can capture different ideas and thoughts for future reference as well. A physical voice recorder or an application on your smartphone will do the job.

Sticky Notes & Bookmarks

If anything you want to remember when you are writing with your EDC pen or want to revisit certain things in the future, you can write them on sticky notes and place them in your notebook. You can also place bookmarks when you end a writing session and they will help you open where you last left.

Also, these sticky notes and bookmarks are attractive and will give a nice appearance to your notebook. They come in many different styles and designs for you to choose from. You can even paste notes on your cupboard or anywhere else in the room to remind you of important things.

Replacement Ink & Cartridges

Whether you are using a bolt action pen, a ballpoint, or a fountain pen, their ink will end at some point and you will need a new cartridge or an ink refill. When you visit a stationary to purchase supplies, make sure you get enough pen replacement cartridges for the future.

A pen won’t work forever and you’ll get angry if ink runs out while you are writing something important. Therefore, we recommend you stack up enough ink refills and replacement cartridges for your pens.

Finally on the Best Writing Instruments

If you want to make your writing journey an enjoyable and exciting one, make sure you have all the right tools in your possession. Right from an EDC bolt action fountain pen to a high-quality notebook, from correction pens to spare cartridges, there are many things you should have.

Thanks to the advancement of technology, you can also use different online writing and grammar tools for assistance now. Whether you are a student, journalist, or blogger, writing will be a big part of your daily life and you should stay prepared for it.

The Pen’s Might: Exploring the History and Evolution of Writing Instruments

Share with whom you care:.

From cave walls to clay tablets, quill pens to fountain pens, typewriters to computers, the tools used for writing have undergone remarkable transformations over thousands of years.

quill pens

Writing instruments have progressed hand-in-hand with human civilization, enabling us to record information, express ideas, and communicate across time and space.

Join me on a journey through history to discover how the humble pen became mightier than the sword through this article “Exploring the History and Evolution of Writing Instruments.”

The Ancient Beginnings of Writing Instruments

Long before pens and pencils, early humans used wall paintings, stone carvings, and markings in the sand to depict stories and ideas.

The earliest known cave paintings date back over 40,000 years ago, while simple tally marks carved on bone fragments represent some of the first records of counting and quantifying.

As civilizations emerged, more sophisticated writing tools were developed.

cave paintings of altamira

Around 3500 BCE, Sumerians in Mesopotamia created the first writing system using wedge-shaped markings made with reeds on soft clay tablets.

This cuneiform writing spread across empires. Meanwhile in Egypt around 3000 BCE, ink made from carbon black and water was applied with reed brushes to papyrus to create the elaborate hieroglyphics that decoded reveal details of dynasties and deities.

From hollow bird bones to chiselled stone blocks, early writing instruments laid the foundation for recording history. But it was their descendants that would revolutionize communication and literacy.

The Renaissance of Writing Instruments

By the Middle Ages, a new writing tool dominated – the feather quill. Geese, swan, crow, eagle, and turkey feathers were prized as writing instruments.

Their nibs were hand-cut with a penknife by professional scribes. Ink was made from a concoction of natural dyes, acids, copper, and iron.

While labor intensive and expensive, the precision of quills allowed scribes to produce illuminated manuscripts with decorations in gold and silver leaf.

Gutenberg Press

This scribal culture was disrupted in 1440 by Johannes Gutenberg’s printing press, which allowed mass production of texts using metal movable type.

No longer just for religious texts, books became more accessible. By increasing literacy across Europe, the printing press changed the course of history.

The Fountain Pen Era

While quills remained popular for centuries, the demand for less messy, more reliable pens grew.

In the 17th century, reservoirs were added to metal-tipped quills to hold more ink. But it was not until 1884 that the first true fountain pen was patented by Lewis Waterman.

This pen with a capillary feed solved the ink flow problems of earlier designs.

Fountain pens were further improved in the early 1900s with the development of the iridium-tipped gold nib by Parker Pens.

Other innovations like quick-drying ink, propel-repel mechanisms, and ergonomic designs made fountain pens favorites of writers, artists, and the bourgeoisie. They epitomized class with many customized finishes from Art Deco to modern.

Ballpoint Pen: A Game-Changer

Fountain pens dominated for decades until the invention of the ballpoint pen. Like Leonard da Vinci’s earlier sketches, László Bíró’s ballpoint pen used gravity and viscosity, not capillary action, to control ink flow.

The Hungarian journalist came up with the design in the 1930s to create a pen that could write on greasy newspapers.

Bíro Brothers partnered with businessman Henry Martin to produce his pen for the RAF during World War II. Their pens proved reliable even at high altitudes.

After the war, the ballpoint was licensed by brands like Parker and Papermate.

The smooth ink and disposability made ballpoints popular worldwide by the 1960s. They became emblematic of a new consumerism and convenience.

Rollerball and Gel Pens: Modern Innovations

While ballpoints dominated for decades, new pen technologies emerged.

Rollerball pens use a similar rolling ball tip, but with water-based ink closer to that of fountain pens.

This ink dries quickly, has more vivid colors, and does not blot as much as ballpoints. Rollerballs hit the mainstream by the 1980s.

In the late 1970s, the first gel pens were invented in Japan using innovations in paint and ink chemistry. Gel ink is suspended in a water-based gel, producing smooth vivid writing. Pentel launched the first commercially successful gel pen in 1984.

Pens like the Pilot G2, Uni-ball Signo, and Sakura Gelly Roll made gels widely accessible. Their fast-drying, glossy ink is ideal for color-coding notes and artwork.

Digital Revolution: From Typewriters to Keyboards

As fountain pens peaked, E. Remington & Sons mass produced the first commercial typewriters in 1874.

Early adopters included Mark Twain and Tennessee Williams who appreciated the speed and legibility. While cumbersome at first, portables like the Hermes 2000 made typewriters portable tools for writers on-the-go.

Vintage Typewriter

But with the advent of personal computers in the 1970s and 1980s, digital keyboards began replacing typewriters for word processing.

Early computers like the Altair 8800 and Apple II pioneered the use of keyboards for input and text generation.

The development of the first mass-marketed personal computer by IBM in 1981 made PCs and keyboards commonplace in offices.

Today, slim laptops with full QWERTY keyboards are preferred for writing over phones and tablets.

Yet speech-to-text programs like Dragon and many other AI enabled tools are removing barriers for hooking thoughts into text. For quick notes, many also rely on stylus pens to write or draw directly on touchscreens.

The Pen of the Future: Digital Pens

In recent decades, digital pens have bridged the gap between analog and digital experiences.

Unlike earlier electrophoretic displays developed by MIT, digital pens like those made by Wacom and Livescribe use a tiny infrared camera to capture pen strokes.

Stylus Wacom Tablet

This information is relayed via Bluetooth to apps on phones, tablets, or computers.

Users can digitally save and interact with their handwritten notes.

Smart digital pens have proven useful for signatures, note-taking, artistic work, and diagramming.

Students and professionals are using them to annotate documents, share notes, and collaborate in the cloud.

As computing power in pens improves, we may see innovations like real-time language translation of handwritten foreign words and phrases.

Calligraphy: The Artistic Expression of Writing

Beyond functionality, writing instruments have delivered creative satisfaction. Calligraphy, the art of beautiful handwriting, has a long global history.

lyteCache.php?origThumbUrl=https%3A%2F%2Fi.ytimg.com%2Fvi%2FNniJs27bU9c%2F0

Its roots go back to China in the Han Dynasty where brushwork conveyed meaning through stroke order and style.

In the Islamic world, Arabic calligraphy was elevated to a supreme artform. Highly stylized fonts and techniques were developed using reed pens and ink.

Calligraphy has seen resurgences in the Western world through influential figures like master penman Platt Rogers Spencer who promoted it as an artform in the late 19th century.

Today, there is a renewed interest in calligraphy using fountain pens, brush pens, and chalk lettering.

Collecting Writing Instruments: A Growing Hobby

For pen connoisseurs, vintage pens are artifacts that connect to history.

Since the 1920s, brands like Parker, Waterman, and Montblanc have produced luxury pens that have become collectors’ items.

Limited edition pens embellished with precious metals and stones have sold for over $10,000 at auction.

lyteCache.php?origThumbUrl=https%3A%2F%2Fi.ytimg.com%2Fvi%2FQc 1EiS31us%2F0

Even mass-produced pens like the Esterbrook J series used by American servicemen are valued at $100+ for their nostalgia factor.

Online communities like The Fountain Pen Network have created a space for collectors to discuss and trade rare finds from pen shows and estates.

Some collectors acquire specimens like a 1803 polygraph duplicating pen once owned by Thomas Jefferson, while others just enjoy fine modern writing instruments.

Either way, pen collecting transforms tools into treasures.

The Impact of Writing Instruments on Education

Pens have long been vital tools of academia. But studies on handwriting versus typing yield thought-provoking insights on learning processes.

Retention and comprehension of material have been shown to improve with handwriting notes versus typing.

The cognitive benefits may arise from the greater mental engagement and ability to visualize and spatially format knowledge.

While laptops offer efficiencies for research and communication, pens engage different neural circuits.

Teacher in a Classroom

Educators are leveraging this by integrating handwriting with digital learning.

Apps allow tablet stylus handwriting to be converted into texts. Concept mapping and diagramming remain powerful visual teaching techniques as well.

Pens continue to build student aptitudes and intellect.

The Psychology of Writing Instruments

Beyond pedagogy, pens have emotional power. They have been wielded to right wrongs and rewrite destinies. The pen represents the absence of physical force for change. Words stir hearts and shape thoughts.

Digital mediums may facilitate effortless writing, but they lack the intimate, visceral connection.

Modern research has revealed how handwriting with pen on paper can have therapeutic benefits too.

Writing on white board

The brain activity in writing is different than typing.

The motor memory and sensory engagement can unlock cognitive pathways.

This has promising implications for memory rehabilitation and mindfulness training to center wandering minds.

Sustainability in Writing Instruments

With growing environmental consciousness, writing instrument companies are addressing sustainability.

Metal pens can last lifetimes, but plastic pens are commonly discarded.

TerraCycle partners with brands like Sharpie for recycling programs while Pilot manufactures pens from recycled bottles.

New bioplastics made from plant starches biodegrade more safely. Companies like BEILUNER have created eco-friendly wood pens.

BEILUNER Pens

Going forward, innovation balancing quality, sustainability, and cost will enable greener pens.

The Future of Writing Instruments

Writing instruments retain relevance despite digital disruption.

Fountain pens are appealing to modern scribes for their elegance and human artistry. Pencils align with minimalist lifestyles.

Moleskine Pen+ Smart Writing Set Pen & Dotted Smart Notebook

Smart pens augment learning and productivity. Screen tablets emulate paper’s flexibility. And brands like Moleskine fuse paper and digital realms through paper tablets.

We carry instincts to craft meaning from the physical world.

Hands and minds converge in writing instruments that evolve yet endure. As technology becomes space to create, the crafted pen remains the creative space.

For while inks and imprints vanish and fade, our souls read what the hand has made. And from our words flow the hopes that shape humanity’s days.

From prehistoric paintings to digital styluses, the development of writing instruments reflects advances in human civilization.

Their marks chronicle our conscious evolution. Pens grant us power to codify laws, express individuality, exchange ideas across frontiers. We cede part of ourselves to pen and ink that will intimately exist beyond us.

While tools come and go, writing by hand remains integral to knowledge, art, identity, and history. We hold the future by the tip of the pen.

When You Write

14 Best Writing Utensils for Writers

There is a good variety of writing utensils on the market, each with its own set of benefits and drawbacks.

If you can afford any writing utensil, it’s prudent to go and get the best writing utensil for writing (the one with the least drawbacks).

But if you are on a budget, you have to window-shop exhaustively to find affordable utensils that are as good as the premium products, or close.

But finding writing utensils that are perfect for writers isn’t always an easy task. That is why I have compiled a list of the best writing utensils for writers in a couple of categories.

Read on to find these writing utensils.

What Are Writing Utensils?

Any instrument that may be used for writing is referred to as a writing utensil. This contains bracket includes items such as:

  • Pens (fountain pens, ballpoint pens, rollerball pens, gel pens, etc.)
  • Notepads (for note-taking, calligraphy, etc.)
  • Pencil Cups
  • Writing hardware and software

Lighting apparatus and furniture (i.e., Desk lamps, bulbs, etc.) are also writing utensils, but people generally associate the writing with the writing instrument in the list.

Here are the best utensils and other implements you need in your writing setup, presented in their categories.

PILOT G2 Premium Rolling Ball Gel Pen

The Best Gel Ink Rollerball Pen

Click For Latest Price

The black G2 Pilot is the king of gel pens, but the Pilot G2 comes with an assorted range of colors.

They are so smooth, they don’t smudge or bleed, they feel comfortable, and they include 4 point sizes. This Rolling Ball Gel Pen has you covered if what you want is a smooth, uninterrupted flow of ink.

And this is more affordable when you compare it to a lot of fountain pens.

What more could one ask for, right?

Well… you could ask for more color options. PILOT G2 Premium rolling ball gel pen set comes with 27 color options and multiple barrel styles.

Scribe Sword Fountain Pen

The Best Fountain Pen

If you are looking for a pen that feels comfortable in your hand, has a cap perfect for the nib and barrel, and at an affordable price, look no further!

The design is simple, but the craftsmanship is outstanding—and when the ink starts flowing smoothly and evenly from that stainless steel nib, you know you have got yourself a remarkable steal.

This is one of the smoothest writing instruments you will ever have the privilege of writing with. Not only is it better than other pens in its price range, but it can easily outperform some expensive pens that come with18 karat gold-coated nibs.

I recommend the Scribe Sword Fountain Pen for anyone interested in calligraphy.

Uni-ball Jetstream RT Retractable Ballpoint Pens

The Best Ballpoint Pen

The Uni-ball Jetstream RT Retractable Ballpoint Pens are smoother and have cleaner lines than most ballpoint pens.

The pens are fine point which is great because it makes for plentiful yet neat lines while writing.

This pen is so smooth that it looks like it’s just gliding across your paper. The pen was designed to withstand fairly heavy use, and the longevity makes it look way cheaper than it is.

This ballpoint pen is a general fitter, I find it simple enough for personal use (journaling, taking random notes, etc.) and just professional enough to use at the office.

Moleskine Classic Notebook

Overall best

The Moleskine Classic Notebook’s paper has a smooth texture that is ideal for writing with a ballpoint pen. It’s also thick enough to hold gel pens.

And if you don’t have a desk nearby, the hardcover is sturdy enough to write on while sitting on your lap or your arm.

The books are available in different colors, which is a good thing considering that there are varied preferences on colors. Therefore, the Moleskine notebook comes with a variety of covers ranging from reef blue to classic black and Scarlet red to myrtle green.

Moonster Leather Journal Writing Notebook

Best Leather Cover

This book has a vintage or antique feel about it and I remember saying that looks that made me think that “I could write spells in it.”

The one-of-a-kind leather cover, as well as creamy-textured blank paper, made me love this before I’d write a single word in it.

The unlined papers, which measure 7 by 5 inches, are recycled from leftover garment industry cloth in India.

This notebook will appeal to eco-warriors because the recycled is tree-free and acid-free.

I recommend you try using the PILOT G2 Premium Rolling Ball Gel Pen on this journal paper (Thank me later!)

PAPERAGE Lined Journal Notebook

Best Lined Journal

You can securely use most pens, pencils, and markers without ghosting or bleed-through on this journal’s paper. The journal paper is thicker than normal notebooks & writing pads, made with 100 gsm acid-free paper in light ivory color.

The notebook is sturdy and the paper inside is smooth and paper thick, so you don’t have to

The thread-bound notebooks are made to lay flat, making writing simpler for both right and left-handed people to keep a journal, take notes, or plan.

Paperage lined journals come in a variety of beautiful and fun colors. The set includes different page styles: Lined pages for note taking, Dotted for bullet journaling, and Blank pages for sketching.

The journals also include inner pockets for IDs, notes, receipts, etc.

Palomino Blackwing 602

The history of these pencils dates back to the 1930s when Blackwing built a cult following.

This item is pencil royalty.

It is said that John Steinbeck used these pencils. Blackwing even makes The Blackwing 24, a pencil that pays tribute to Pulitzer Prize-winning author. It is rumored that Chuck Jones used Blackwings to create Bugs Bunny and countless other Looney Tunes characters.

Blackwing 602 pencils are made with top-quality materials, including Genuine Incense-ceda and have a solid and smooth Japanese graphite core that is ideal for writers, musicians, and everyday usage.

When you want a smooth, consistent line without over-sharpening, this is the tool to use.

The barrel of Blackwing 602 pencils is made with the finest materials in the world, including Genuine Incense-cedar from California and premium Japanese graphite.

Amazon Basics Woodcased #2 Pencils

Best in the affordable range

When it comes to pencils, I look for an ordinary (basic) product that can do the job properly!

It might be selling at a low price, but this isn’t a low-quality pencil. Unless you’re trying your best aiming to get graphite on your fingers, you’re going to have fewer issues about smearing words and getting your hands dirty from graphite.

You might have a favorite brand that meets your professional needs, but they will cost you a good dime.

So, I recommend these pencils if you need pencils in bulk. For example, when you want pencils to distribute to your students.

ECOTREE Wood & Plastic Free Rainbow Pencils

Best Aesthetic

One of the reasons I like these pencils is the color. Rainbow-like colors make these beauties an ideal giftable item.

The inner body of the ECOTREE wood & plastic free rainbow pencils is made of recycled paper and the pencil is biodegradable, making it more special for all people who care about the environment.

Although they are strong and break-resistant, these paper pencils are much easier to sharpen than other pencils.

Pentel Hi-Polymer Block Eraser

The Pentel eraser is comfortably soft and does not smear what you’re trying to erase.

It does a fantastic job with a regular pencil, but it’s also amazing with soft pastels. It works well with colored pencils, although they’re difficult to erase regardless of the eraser.

Anything that requires a normal eraser is easy for the Pentel hi-polymer block eraser—and you will only need very little pressure.

Tombow Mono Zero Eraser

This is a pen-style, precision tip eraser, which also comes with 2 Eraser Refills.

The precision ensures that you don’t have to repeatedly try to erase the same small area and that helps you to avoid damaging the paper.

This also means that you erase small details and make crisp lines. I recommend this if you like sketching when outlining your books.

Calligraphy

Calligraphy is more than ‘beautiful handwriting’ or ‘a skill of handwriting.’

It’s the art of creating beautiful symbols by hand and properly arranging them. It requires mastery of a set of skills and techniques for arranging and inscribing words in such a way that they convey integrity, harmony, a sense of genealogy, rhythm, and creative zeal.

Apart from that, practicing calligraphy requires proper writing implements such as the 32-piece Mont Marte Calligraphy Set.

Mont Marte Calligraphy Set

Although the packaging may vary, the kit includes Calligraphy Pens, Calligraphy Nibs, Ink Cartridges, Introduction Booklet, and Exercise Booklet.

A brand-new set comes with four classic style refillable calligraphy pens, five classic nib grades (extra-fine, fine, medium, broad and extra broad nibs), 20 ink cartridges (in different colors, i.e., black, brown, green, pink, orange, and yellow), a booklet with included letter-by-letter introduction and other beginner tools, and exercise booklet for practicing and refining your calligraphy skills.

Sharpie 30162PP Permanent Markers

Sharp markers are the gold standard for permanent markers, and writing is always a breeze with the fine point.

Will mark nearly anything you need it to, whether it’s clothing, metal items, paper, or plastic. And… once the ink dries, it does not smear or rub off.

Word of advice, the word ‘permanent’ is kind of true, so avoid using it to mark yourself because it does not wash off your skin easily—and keep out of your young children’s reach.

They are perfect for coloring because—apart from the fact that they dry quickly—the intensely vivid colors produce eye-popping effects.

Pen/Pencil Cup Holder

Choices & change retro shabby chic vintage pencil holder.

This antique typewriter pen holder by “Choices & Change” is a great gift for writers on Christmas, birthdays, book signing events, or any special occasion. The space for holding pens, pencils, and other desk accessories measures 2.8″ x.2″ x 2.8″

It’s nostalgic and a great addition to any writing desk, and the vintage look goes well with fountain pens and calligraphy pens.

It is roomier than other holders whose designers focus on the aesthetic part of their product while ignoring the writer’s needs.

In addition to the roominess, the holder is heavy and sturdy.

Top 3 Writing Software

Scrivener ( Best for writing books ): There are a lot of different writing programs out there, but if you’re looking for a comprehensive and professional-level program, Scrivener is worth a look. Features like the corkboard, outliner, and full-screen writing make writing easier—especially the organizational part.

Word ( Best for short reads and academic work ): Microsoft Word is a legendary word processor and a lot of people are familiar with this software. It’s simple enough for everyone to use but still sophisticated enough to get the job done. Although Scrivener is superior for writing novels, some famous writers still use Word, and it still works perfectly for them.

Google Docs ( Best online word processor ): it’s easy to find reasons to love Google Docs; it’s free, very easy to use, and instantly saves your document in the cloud. Its collaboration features are incredible, and they allow users to invite co-writers and editors to work on the document, collaboratively make changes, add suggestions, and hence share ideas while writing.

Budgeting for Writing Utensils

Budgeting can be a difficult task, especially when it comes to money spent on things like personal care, clothing, and necessities.

It becomes even more complicated when you’re trying to figure out how much money should be set aside for things that seem of little relevance, like writing utensils.

You start asking yourself questions like, “with all the different types of writing utensils and apps (like Scrivener , MS Word , and Evernote ), why would I need to spend money on pen and paper?”

Well, the answer is simple: digital technology is often unreliable. With pen and paper, you don’t have to worry about batteries dying or not having an internet connection.

Below are some tips you can use when budgeting for writing utensils:

1) Identify your needs

Do you need specific types of pens for different projects? Do you want notebooks that are easy to take with you? Which utensils will best meet those needs? Write down all the features that are most important to you, then prioritize them from one to ten (one being the lowest priority).

This way, it’s easier to see what is non-negotiable and what is negotiable. Budgeting is all about making decisions, so it’s important to be clear from the beginning about your needs.

2) Rank alternative options

Now that you’ve identified what your needs are, write down approximately how much each utensil will cost. If a lot of utensils can’t be avoided due to necessity, then rank them according to priority and order the list according to price from lowest to highest.

If there are a lot of similar items that could do the trick or task equally well—for example, if you need notebook paper but there are several types available—then try ranking them based on other factors such as size, color, use (i.e., writing vs. drawing), etc. Write down the prices below those, and continue until you’ve ranked all the items you’re considering.

3) Budget for alternatives

After you’ve completed your ranking, look at how much money is available to spend on each item and allot that amount accordingly. If there’s a high price item that can’t be avoided then try putting more of that money into it while cutting back from other areas, or vice versa if another item is low priority but quite cheap.

Final Words on Writing Utensils for Writers

The first step to finding the best writing utensils is determining exactly what kind of pen or pencil you want.

It’s entirely possible that having only one kind might end up frustrating you because it doesn’t handle well enough to write all documents; on the other hand, it could make life easier if your demanding criteria are met by one tool rather than multiple ones all trying to do roughly the same thing.

Either way, you can see that it’s smart to try out a couple of utensils before choosing the ones that’d do the job for you.

How Music Helps Us Be More Creative

In today’s world, creative thinking is needed more than ever. Not only do many businesses seek creative minds to fill their ranks, but the kinds of complex social problems we face could also use a good dose of creativity.

Luckily, creativity is not reserved for artists and geniuses alone. Modern science suggests that we all have the cognitive capacity to come up with original ideas—something researchers call “divergent thinking.” And we can all select from a series of ideas the one most likely to be successful, which researchers call “convergent thinking.”

Though we may not all be equally accomplished at these kinds of thinking, we can all become more skillful in creative problem-solving—whether the problems we face involve figuring out technological challenges at work or the next steps to take in creating a new painting. The question is how.

creative writing instrument

One new study explores music as a source of creativity. Since music has been shown to improve cognition and enhance learning and memory in other studies, it makes sense that perhaps it has an impact on creative thinking, too.

In the experiment, participants tried creativity exercises that measured divergent or convergent thinking while being exposed to either silence (the control scenario) or classical music that evoked four distinct emotional states: happy, calm, sad, or anxious.

After comparing participant performance on divergent and convergent thinking in the five scenarios, the researchers found that participants who’d listened to happy music had significantly higher scores on divergent thinking than those who’d performed in silence. In other words, they came up with more total ideas, and more creative and innovative ideas (as rated by people who were unfamiliar with the study’s aim). The other types of music did not have this impact.

“The results suggest that listening to happy music increases performance on overall divergent thinking,” write the authors, suggesting that it enhances the cognitive flexibility needed to come up with innovative solutions—the ability to switch between different concepts and perspectives, rather than seeing the problem from a rigid point of view.

Interestingly, whether or not the participants “liked” the music had no impact on their performance, suggesting that the benefits don’t come from simply enjoying music. And none of the types of music had an impact on convergent thinking, which requires coming up with a right answer rather than opening your mind to many potential ideas.

“The increase in divergent but not convergent thinking after listening to happy music may be explained by the fact that the convergent tasks rely less on fluency and flexibility, but on finding one correct answer,” write the authors.

It may also have to do with the mood created by the happy music. After all, happiness is considered to be a positive emotion that, according to researcher Barbara Fredrickson, broadens our mindset and enhances our desire to explore and play. Though the researchers didn’t actually analyze mood changes, research suggests a link between positive mood and creativity , suggesting that this may be the underlying mechanism behind the benefits of happy music.

Whatever the case, the results suggest that people may want to listen to happy music while they work—particularly if they need to come up with new ways of looking at a particular problem. As the authors conclude, “music listening may be useful to promote creative thinking in inexpensive and efficient ways in various scientific, educational, and organizational settings when creative thinking is needed.”

She….LOVES!!!….the pen.  This went over very well.  She knew it was coming but to see it in hand… the craftsmanship is amazing.  The history of the wood.  The details!!!  The fit and finish are just amazing.  It is definitely one of the nicest pens I’ve held in person.  It will also get used a lot!  No storage for this one.  It will be used as the tool it was meant to be and will document her memories for years to come.

Based on A.A. Milne’s stories set in the 100 Acre Wood, this pen is inspired by Owl and fittingly named.  Using a once off casting with Owl’s main body colors and a piece of spalted Beech from the 100 Acre Wood in England, this pen turns heads with subtle beauty.

The hand engraved copper trim mimics an actual wing, while the finial rounds out the ensemble with an owl’s face.  The copper will patina in time and have a wonderful glow that can be managed with oils from ones hand or a simple silver clothe.  To coordinate with the copper trim, a rose gold nib was used in all the pens.

Project Musk Ox

Working with the Native Alaskan People we have been able to procure some of their excess Musk Ox horn.  The horn has an amazing grain and texture, but is smooth as silk and never gets cold.

A variety of colors were made and each has a hand forged Damascus clip to make those colors really pop.

FrankenPen 4.0

What does the 4.0 in the name stand for?  This is the fourth annual edition of the FrankenPen series.  The 2022 pen went back to the roots of the design.  How many different materials and textures can be combined in an interesting and pleasing form?

Let’s start with the furniture, nickel silver, titanium, mokume gene, stainless steel, sterling silver and copper.  The balance is hand made blue jean micarta, in house resin, ceboplast and a Juma section.

Black Pen Society ’22

Our second year crafting the yearly pen for the Black Pen Society, we took a different direction, shapely and subtle.  The cabochon’s are based on the years member only pin, featuring a black crow.  The only real color is the copper furniture, which will patina over time, but can be brightened by oils in your hand or a simple silver clothe.

The shape of the body feels excellent in the hand, while the matte finish keeps the pen inline with the principles of the Black Pen Society, no color.  This series utilized a rose gold plated steel nib.

Listening and responding to patients' stories for over 20 years as an emergency physician has strengthened my appreciation for the many ways that the skills and principles drawn from writing fiction double as necessary clinical skills. The best medicine doesn't work on the wrong story, and the stories patients tell sometimes feel like first drafts-vital and fragile works-in-progress. Increasingly complex health challenges compounded by social, financial, and psychological burdens make for stories that are difficult to articulate and comprehend. In this essay, I argue that healthcare providers need to think like creative writers and the skills and sensitivities necessary to story construction deserve a vital space in medical education. A thorough understanding of story anatomy and the imaginative flexibility to work stories into open spaces serve as antidotes to the reductive nature of clinical decision making and have implications as patient safety and risk management strategies. The examples that I have selected demonstrate how thinking like a creative writer functions at the bedside, providing tools for clinical excellence and empathy. This approach asks that we re-imagine the importance of story in clinical care: from a vehicle to a diagnosis to its place as a critical destination.

Using old wrenches like that seems really cool. I have a few spares laying around I can use. How would broken ones work, or do they have to be new?

Interesting question – I haven’t tried with broken wrenches but I think if you played with the positioning you would be okay. Let me know if you try!

  • Creative Writing: Reforming Wills And Trusts To Achieve Settlements

When reforming a will or trust, the Surrogate’s Court “changes the language of the will [or trust instrument] itself by the addition or deletion of words in an attempt to conform [the instrument] to the decedent’s intent” ( Matter of Stahle , NYLJ, Jan. 23, 2002, at 32 [Sur Ct, Onondaga County]).  Historically speaking, courts have been “hesitant to reform wills [and trusts,] unless the reformation effectuates the [testators and grantors’] intent” ( Matter of Brill , NYLJ, Aug. 17, 2017, at 23 [Sur Ct, Bronx County]; Matter of Dousmanis , 190 AD3d 548, 549 [1st Dep’t 2021]).

However, when the reformation of a will or trust will result in a settlement of litigation, courts have been less hesitant to reform wills and trust instruments (Marilyn G. Ordover & Charles F. Gibbs, “Correcting Mistakes in Wills and Trusts”, NYLJ, Aug. 6, 1998, at 25).  This is because New York State has a strong public “policy encouraging family settlements” ( Matter of Harburg , NYLJ, Aug. 12, 1997, at 26 [Sur Ct, New York County]).  Thus, in cases in which the interested parties have agreed to reform wills or trusts in order to achieve settlements, courts repeatedly have approved of the reformations to which the parties have stipulated ( Matter of Schmitt , NYLJ, July 3, 2000, at 1 [Sur Ct, Westchester County]; Matter of Schwartz , NYLJ, Jan. 22, 1992, at 25 [Sur Ct, Westchester County]; Matter of Wilkie , NYLJ, Jan. 17, 1992, at 35 [Sur Ct, Westchester County]).

Nassau County Surrogate Margaret C. Reilly’s decision in Matter of Johnson illustrates this point ( Matter of Johnson , File No. 2015-383093/A, Decision and Order, dated June 29, 2022 [Sur Ct, Nassau County]).  In Johnson , the trustee of a lifetime trust sought to invalidate an amendment to a trust instrument ( id. ).  After years of discovery and extensive motion practice, the parties to the proceeding commenced a hearing concerning the trust amendment’s validity ( id. ).  On the third day of the hearing, the parties entered into a settlement that provided for: (a) the trust amendment to be declared null and void; and (b) the original trust agreement to be reformed to provide for the share of one of the trust’s beneficiaries to be held in a continuing supplemental needs trust ( id. ).  The proposed reformation would ensure that the beneficiary in question (who previously had defended the trust amendment’s validity) would remain eligible to receive governmental assistance, despite the fact that she was a trust beneficiary ( id. ).  Surrogate Reilly granted the parties’ request to reform the original trust instrument in order achieve a settlement of the underlying litigation ( id. ).

Although courts generally reform wills and trusts sparingly, courts may be more willing to grant reformation of an instrument when doing so will achieve a settlement.  Consequently, parties and practitioners should consider whether to propose to reform a will or trust when negotiating settlement agreements.
