'Drishyam': Film Review

Drishyam Still - H 2015

Played by the luminous Tabu (whose list of strong female characters includes Life of Pi , The Namesake and Haider ), Drishyam ‘s formidable villain — Goa state Inspector General Meera Deshmukh — is a fierce and ruthless lioness who will stop at nothing to discover why her teenaged son has gone missing.

The truth is that her son is a spoiled lout given to harassing young women; when the boy attempts to blackmail a young girl into sexual favors one rainy night after surreptitiously recording a video of her naked on his mobile phone, he gets his violent comeuppance.

Deshmukh decides to put the screws to the girl’s father, a deceptively simple family man named Vijay Salgaonkar ( Ajay Devgn ) whom she suspects is behind his disappearance, and faced with a too-perfect array of evidence “proving” the family’s innocence, Deshmukh orders a phalanx of police goons led by corrupt sub-inspector Gaitonde ( Kamlesh Sawant ) to extract a confession. Vijay may have dropped out of the fourth grade, but he’s got some clever ideas of his own to keep his family out of jail, and many of the film’s most pleasurable scenes track how Vijay draws upon his exhaustive knowledge of movie justice to coach his family on how to behave as the cops close in.

Since the original Malayalam version of the same name became the language’s highest grosser in Indian history, and Kannada , Tamil and Telugu versions also earned an audience, a Bollywood adaptation was the natural next step. This expertly directed and acted thriller is likely to benefit from strong word of mouth, although some scenes of brutality (including scenes of women and children being beaten in a police station) will discourage family viewers. Producer Kumar Mangat Pathak , known for the critically acclaimed police drama Special 26 (2013) and Vishal Bhardwaj ‘s powerful Shakespeare adaptation Omkara (which also starred Devgan ), wisely chose director Nishikant Kamat to lead this version.

Like Dombivali Fast , Drishyam portrays a decent man pushed to the limit by corruption, and Kamat’s restrained treatment turns a story ripe for melodrama into a thoughtful depiction of an honest, upstanding family forced to commit a crime in the name of truth and honor. Devgn and Tabu , who were cast romantically in Takshak , Haqeeqat and Vijaypath , are formidable opponents here. Among this thriller’s many pleasures are scenes of Vijay crafting an alibi as the cops work to unravel his story step by step; as well as every scene featuring Tabu , who plays a smart, complex woman who confidently leads a police force while keeping her inner pain as a mother under wraps — when her son’s abandoned car is discovered in an abandoned quarry lake, her voice nearly imperceptibly cracks when she recognizes it.

Technical credits are top-class, with Bhardwaj contributing several moving songs to the film’s background soundtrack; cinematographer Avinash Arun capturing Goa’s harsh sunlight and simply lit rooms; and editor Aarif Sheikh ably driving the film’s momentum with suspense and well-placed humor.

Brisker and darker ... thriller Drishyam.

Drishyam review – entertainingly twisty thriller gets another remake

This summer’s second take on Jeethu Joseph’s 2013 Malayalam tale is an overlong yet still deftly satisfying film

S ome may decry the news that the Fantastic Four franchise has been rebooted after a decade. Drishyam marks the Indian cinema’s second crack this summer at its own material: Jeethu Joseph’s 2013 Malayalam thriller of this name, remade first in Tamil (July’s Papanasam, again directed by Joseph) and now in Hindi by writer Upendra Sidhaye and director Nishikant Kamat.

The temptation is to ascribe such speedy recycling to commercial imperatives – in theory, Hindi grants the story its biggest audience – but even on its third spin, this story still feels fresh, urgent and relevant to a moment when we’re surrounded by screens.

Kamat’s version restages Joseph’s morality play – village cable-TV employee uses procedural knowledge to clean up after his teenage daughter kills a punk wielding candid footage of her – with an ungainly subtitle (“Visuals Can Be Deceptive”) and a brisker, darker tone. At 163 minutes, this Drishyam hardly cuts to the chase, but it’s a dash more economic in describing its threatened family unit. Where we relaxed into the company of Papanasam’s real-life partners Kamal Haasan and Gautami, Kamat’s film feels decidedly punched-up: lead Ajay Devgn has 13 years on his on-screen wife Shriya Saran, who barely appears older than her eldest child.

Given the revenge-porn backdrop, it makes vague thematic sense that the women should so recall sisters in looks as in arms, but replacing the amenable Haasan with the brooding, muscular Devgn has a peculiar effect. The latter certainly displays the heavy-lidded look of one who’s had to sift through endless bad movies for crumbs of wisdom – it’s a look many critics will recognise from the bathroom mirror – but he’ll be few viewers’ idea of a cuddly paterfamilias. Sniping passive-aggressively at Saran, “playfully” holding a carrot to her neck as if it were a knife, Devgn reinterprets Joseph’s everyman hero as a borderline brute. Rather than sinking the film, this actually lends the second half a new dynamic: it renders the protagonist almost as compromised as the brutish local cops.

Casting Bollywood figurehead Tabu as the inspector general on Devgn’s case ensures our sympathies are conflicted, to say the least; the concluding gesture towards moral relativism consequently feels far queasier here than it was in Papanasam, which permitted us to hope Haasan would, this once, get away with murder. (Devgn’s Vijay appears to treat corpse disposal like gardening: as a regular weekend activity.)

Kamat proves a keen observer of how this household, with its elegant partition curtains, is sullied by the sudden lapse into murderous activity: the mud tracked through the hallway, the youngest daughter in her Minnie Mouse pyjamas catching a glimpse of the body. Removed of Haasan’s blithe humour and Joseph’s lush pastoral imagery, this Drishyam presents a grim vision of rural India as a place where everyone has crossed a line and seen too much, and policemen have no apparent qualms about taking the jackboot to an eight-year-old child.

For all that, it remains a pleasurable, twisty tale. Kamat has wisely retained all of Joseph’s satisfying thriller business – again, there’s an agonising wait for a bright yellow Hyundai to sink as a potential witness hovers on the horizon – and revisiting this narrative allows us to spot the slyness of its construction: how those components essential to the second half – the remote quarry, the new police station – are slipped in beneath the guise of genial scene-setting, and just how meticulously the eventual cover-up is worked out, right down to such details as who sits where on a bus.

It’s true Sidhaye’s script adds nothing radically new to earlier drafts, and even at the notionally pacier length, you can still feel it bogging down in interrogatory talk towards the end. First-time viewers may well conclude, however, that plotting this strong doesn’t require that much more to play on a Friday or Saturday night. What you get here – and again it does just about feel enough – is largely functional, occasionally deft entertainment, drawn from a story you suspect the movies will probably be riffing on until we switch off our smartphones for good.

The film is all about the ups and down in a husband - wife relationship. Drishyam is a deeply layered duel between truth and lie. By placing an uneducated, harmless farmer and his family on the one end and cops at the other, Joseph sets the right tone for a riveting conflict.

Drishyam review: You'll be better off watching the original Malayalam film

Drishyam isn't a shot-by-shot remake of the malayalam film and in that may lie some of its problems..

Listen to Story

Ajay Devgn and Shriya Saran in a still from Drishyam

Drishyam Dir: Nishikant Kamat Cast: Ajay Devgn, Tabu, Shriya Saran, Kamlesh Sawant, Ishita Dutta.

It isn't surprising that Bollywood leapt on the opportunity to remake Jeetu Joseph's 20 13 Malayalam hit of the same name starring superstar Mohanlal. It has a fascinating plot, for most part an engaging narrative and a charismatic protagonist. There is an ordinary family which finds itself in dire straits and comes together to deal with the common enemy, in this case the police. The crime is committed and the criminals revealed in the first 30 minutes; the suspense here lies in the remaining two hours which are spent in showing how to get away with the crime and in wondering if the family will crumble under relentless pressure. The cleverness of the original lies in how it blurs the line of how a good guy is inadvertently committing unlawful activities ultimately for a good cause. Simply put, the Malayalam film gives the Sooraj Barjatya's message of family matters/Hum Saath Saath Hain a novel new spin. Sadly, the new Drishyam fails to paint a compelling portrait of a close-knit family which is crucial to the film. It also drags the subsequent survival of the smartest.

Ajay Devgn is Vijay Salgaonkar, an orphan, a fourth-standard dropout, a cable operator, a cinephile, a husband, a father of two and foremost a family man. He suddenly finds himself having to protect his family after the son of a police officer goes missing. Cops are after his family. Vijay concocts lies at a rapid pace, demonstrating a clever mind which constructs a foolproof narrative to ensure his family isn't implicated. Soon Vijay's wife (Shriya Saran) and daughters are anxious participants in a plan to deceive the cops. It's a promising story which is executed in a listless manner with only little thrill of the original.

What Drishyam 2013 does particularly well is turn the concept of seeing is believing over its head. Filmmaker Jeetu Joseph poses the question that what if what you are shown or told is such a well-constructed lie, fed so astutely and frequently, that you are convinced it is the truth? In doing so the film focuses on the resourcefulness of the human mind and simultaneously a patriarch's resilience to save his family from a life behind bars. Kamath's film barely establishes these aspects and instead turns the film into The Dummy's Guide to Fool the Police. Ample time is devoted to establish Vijay's genius and explain his plan in such detail that it leaves little to audience imagination. As a result, the battle of brains between Vijay and his nemesis in inspector general Meera Deshmukh (Tabu) never quite feels a battle. The investigation itself is a drab affair.

Vijay is a complex character. He is exploiting the goodwill he enjoys to get out of a soup. He is a master pretender, liar. Devgn struggles to demonstrate the many layers of Vijay. He especially isn't convincing as the endearing, devoted patriarch. Shriya Saran is miscast as the anxious mother and wife, which explains the need for a change from the original screenplay. Tabu makes most of what she is given, enacting the frustration of an imposing cop who meets her toughest foe, and the woes of a mother whose son is missing. It's a different matter altogether that Meera and her husband (Rajat Kapoor) take over a day to respond to their son's disappearance and the screenplay doesn't rightfully address their own pathos. Apart from Tabu, only Kamlesh Sawant seems a good fit for the part of the cop who is constantly cross with Vijay.

But the main problem with this Drishyam lies in how Nishikant Kamat fails to establish the socio-cultural milieu which is essential to the story. The film is set in Pandolem in Goa yet the characters and their voices never feel that they belong to the place. This isn't a shot-by-shot remake of the Malayalam film and in that may lie some of its problems. With the sluggish first half in which Kamat gives Tabu a dramatic slo-mo entry, the more suspense-driven second half is a vast improvement. Kamat just about holds it together as he takes a will-they, won't-they approach to the Salgaonkars and engrosses viewers into their fate. Nonetheless, you'll be better off watching the Malayalam original. Published By: AtMigration Published On: Jul 31, 2015 --- ENDS ---

Film review: Drishyam has a gripping plot and plenty of twists

The successful malayalam movie drishyam has been remade in hindi..

Ajay Devgn in the Hindi movie Drishyam. Courtesy Panorama Studios

Drishyam Directed by: Nishikant Kamat Starring: Ajay Devgn, Tabu, Rajat Kapoor, Shriya Saran Three stars

Drishyam is the Hindi remake of the successful Malayalam film of the same name. The success of the original meant that the remake was highly anticipated. However, the Bollywood version fails to live up to the legacy of its South Indian cousin.

The film’s plot revolves around Vijay Salgaonkar (Ajay Devgn), an uneducated but self-made man running a small cable-TV business, and his wife, Nandini (Shriya Saran). The couple live with their two daughters in a small Goan town. That Vijay is an avid film buff is established early on.

Their lives are turned upside down when Vijay’s elder daughter accidently kills a boy – the son of the Inspector General of Goa Police, Meera Deshmukh, (Tabu) who was harassing and blackmailing her.

As Meera investigates the Salgaonkars in the hope of finding her son, Vijay spins a web of convincing lies and cover-ups to keep the police at bay. In doing so, his inspirations and ideas come from the countless movies he has seen.

Both Vijay and Meera are willing to go to any length for their families and are staunchly unapologetic for their actions, however unlawful they may seem. During their cat-and-mouse game, broader social issues, such as police brutality, are also touched upon, with Meera blurring the line between right and wrong, lawful and unlawful, in her quest to find her son.

The film has a gripping plot with plenty of twists, as Vijay tries to stay one step ahead of the cops.

Tabu, in her first role since winning last year’s Filmfare Award for the Best Supporting Actress in the film Haider, again delivers a strong performance, portraying with great finesse a ruthless cop who is also emotionally distraught at the loss of her son.

Devgn, however, is a little unconvincing as the wily yet devoted family man. Rajat Kapoor, playing Meera’s businessman husband, does well with his small but important role of a father pining for his lost son.

The film’s script has its problems – the overall pace seems laborious and slack for a murder-thriller, especially during the first half.

Further, it seems odd that the plot focuses only on the police trying to convict Salgaonkar and his family, rather than making any effort to look for the missing boy.

A tighter edit with crisper dialogue would have served the film much better.

The tag line for the movie says that “Visual can be deceptive”.

After watching Drishyam, the audience might be left wondering if remakes can be equally deceptive.

What's the Story?

DRISHYAM follows Vijay Salgaonkar ( Ajay Devgn ) and his family who become prime suspects in the case of Sameer Deshmukh (Rishab Chadha) who goes missing after a series of unfortunate events. Meera Deshmukh (Tabu), a high-ranking police inspector of Goa and the mother of Sameer, is desperate to find her son and is willing to do whatever it takes. Will Vijay and his family manage to evade the police?

Is It Any Good?

This crime thriller directed by Nishikant Kamat is an intense suspenseful rollercoaster. Drishyam focuses on power dynamics and does well in challenging corrupt and bureaucratic systems of the police force. It presents a riveting parental feud and plays out like an intricate game of chess. Truth is exposed as malleable and perspective remains essential in both forging and wiping out evidence. Performances by the entire cast are stellar and the plot twists are intriguing. However, the sexual harassment of a minor and blackmail isn't problematized or interrogated within the film as much as the consequential accidental killing of the perpetrator is. The focus singularly remains on a cat and mouse chase between the police and the Salgaonkars. The interrogation scenes, additionally, are intense and brutal, and might distress young viewers.

'Drishyam 2' movie review: How to get away with murder and take along the masses, again

A still from the film 'Drishyam 2'

It is more riveting to witness a criminal hide a crime than to watch a detective solve one. There is something about murder and murderers that grips our base instincts. There is also the fascination. Where did he keep the body? How did he destroy the evidence? What did he do after the crime? These are intriguing questions, sure. But for those of us who have at least stolen a scented eraser back in the day, there is only one concern: Will he get away with it?

Remember, remember, the second of October. Vijay Salgaonkar (Ajay Devgn) and his family were accomplices in the murder, that of Sam, IG Meera Deshmukh’s (Tabu) son. They did go to Swami Chinmayananda’s Satsang, had four pav bhajis, watched a film, and stayed at a hotel, just not on the day of the crime. Drishyam (2015) was an edge-of-the-seat, get-glued-to-the-screen thriller.

More than that, it was a cheeky commentary on the visual medium itself. A class 4 dropout, who learned everything from films, executes the perfect crime, in a film. Anything can happen at the movies.

Drishyam 2, at times, does get mega on its meta-ness but it still retains the thrills. It has been seven years since Sam Deshmukh’s murder. Cinephile Vijay now owns a theatre. In his introductory scene, he is watching a film titled Qaidi and assessing if he should put it up on his screens.

After exiting the theatre, he tells a subordinate to go with a comedy film because “people don’t want to see a movie where the hero gets caught.” Vijay is also working on the story of a film which he frequently discusses with screenwriter Murad Ali (a smartly cast Saurabh Shukla who wrote Satya (translation: Truth). Both are stuck on the climax of the film. You know what you are in for.

Like a seed buried deep in the ground, the Salgaonkars’ crime is sprouting roots. And this time, Tabu has summoned the grim reaper of smoking-cigarette-in-the-rain detectives. Enter Akshaye Khanna as the new case officer. He plays chess with himself and doesn’t believe in chances (read: Ittefaq). In an intricately written sequence, he visits the Salgaonkars when Vijay is out.

Dressed in a corn-blue suit, Akshaye inspects everything like Philip Marlowe but those cold eyes behind the black shades reminded me of Tony Soprano. But sometimes he did over-intensify a scene by knitting together his eyebrows so much that I wanted to count the wrinkles on his forehead.

That aside, Drishyam 2 does make you delay that bathroom break. The tension simmers and becomes so thick that it can be cut with a murderer’s knife. It made me skip writing some notes for this review because I was so transfixed with what was playing on the screen.

The film ably sprinkles jokes and callbacks to the previous installment whenever the plot loses a bit of momentum, but it never derails from its track.

It also understands the possibilities and limits of cinema. In a scene, Vijay explains to a struggling actor, who is eager to work in his film, why he has published a book with the film’s story.

“The audience for a book and a film are different,” he says. Drishyam 2 doesn’t try to become literature. Like a great medium, it teaches the viewer how to consume it: “Focus on the visuals because words can lie.” Were you watching closely?

Drishyam Review: Intelligent Thriller

Drishyam Review: Intelligent Thriller

Movie: Drishyam Rating: 3.25/5 Banner: Suresh Productions, Rajkumar Theatres Cast: Venkatesh, Meena, Nadhiya, Naresh, Ravi Kale, Sameer, Paruchuri Venkateswar Rao, Kritika and Others Story, Screenplay: Jeetu Joseph Dialogues: Darling Swamy Music: Sarath Editor: Marthand K Venkatesh Cinematographer: S Gopal Reddy Producers: Raj Kumar, Suresh Direction: Sripriya Release Date: 11th July, 2014

Venkatesh has been trying to experiment for quite some time to slowly digress into roles that suit his age and place in the industry. So, he has been working with various directors to make sure that he gets to play different roles. This time around, he has tried working in the remake of the Malayalam superhit Drishyam starring Mohanlal in the lead. In Malayalam, the film won critical acclaim and commercial success. Though it is surely not a commercial entertainer on the lines of Venkatesh’s past hits, Drishyam deals with a contentious issue in a commercial setup. Incidentally, the film is directed by yesteryears Tamil actress Sri Priya who has turned a director. The film’s unusual storyline and its narration keeps one immersed in the plot till the very end.

Story: Rambabu is a small-time cable operator who has a quintessential middle-class family. An incident turns his little world upside down and Rambabu suddenly finds himself in a situation where he has to safeguard his family comprising his wife and two daughters. Like all Indians who grow up with an overdose of films, Rambabu too uses his filmi knowledge to find a way out of his troubles.

Artistes’ Performances: Venkatesh puts in a superlative performance as the middle class father of two girls who are coming of age. Though he did act in family dramas earlier, this time around, he shrugs off his star image to fit perfectly into the role of a middle-class man trying to deal with a problem that life suddenly throws at him. Of course, one must steer clear of the temptation to compare his action with that of Mohanlal’s, but Venkatesh springs a surprise by simply playing his role with conviction. Also, it has been some time since he has had acted in a good film as a solo hero and Drishyam provides an ideal platform for Venkatesh to experiment and showcase his craft as an actor.

Another artiste who gets to play an impressive role is Nadiya. She has been very lucky in getting good roles after her comeback and she is living up to the expectations. She looks every bit convincing as the upright police officer during her introduction and later as a helpless mother unable to find her son, she puts in a compelling performance that almost leaves the audience in tears.

As for the rest of the cast, Meena is adequate for her role. Kruthika who plays the elder daughter of Venkatesh has acted well in pivotal scenes. Baby Esther who stole hearts in Malayalam once again spells her cast. Ravi Kale as the villainous constable is very good. The rest of the cast put in good performances.

Technical Excellence: Dialogues are by Darling Swamy who remains true to the original dialogues from Malayalam for much of the film. But one gets to catch glimpses of his talent during the comic situations. Incidentally, the film has only two songs, both of which are situational.

The background score is good enough and cinematography by S Gopal Reddy is as good as ever. His professional touch elevates the dramatic scenes and infuses life into each frame. The same level of professionalism is matched in editing and production design.

Coming to director Sri Priya, she has literally retained every nuance and every gesture from the original Malayalam film. So, all those who had watched the original might wonder as to what her contribution to the film is apart from calling out action and cut. But one has to appreciate Sri Priya for not getting carried away and trying to give the film her personal touch. She simply makes a Xerox copy of the original in Telugu and that’s where her success lies. She also manages to get good performances from her cast, which is another huge plus for her as a director.

Highlights:

  • The opening scenes are a little irritating

Analysis: Based on the Japanese movie Suspect X, Drishyam is a remake of the Malayalam film based on the 2008 Japanese thriller. Of late, almost all successful Telugu films have been commercial entertainers which bank heavily on inane comedy scenes.

Almost all the writers and directors are focusing completely on making the most by putting in what sells the best.

But Drishyam is a prime example of a film which works on the strength of its story. It proves that if the story and narration are strong, then a film does not need extra props to keep the audience enticed.

For now, it is not clear if the Telugu audiences are ready to watch content driven movies like Drishyam. But it surely is a trend-setter of sorts and kind of puts forth a road map for the kind of films that one can expect in the coming years.

But be warned that if one goes with pre-conceived ideas about it being a Venkatesh film or a family entertainer, then the viewer is bound to be treated to a series of surprises.

For starters, the film has no major song and dance sequences. Neither does it have high doses of comedy or heavy-duty action scenes. Instead, all focus is on mind power and how one can use one’s intellect to bail his family out of trouble.

In short, it is a battle of wits that is shorn of any commercial elements. So, it remains to be seen if the Telugu audience can accept a film which totally digresses from the mainstream format of a quintessential commercial entertainer.

In fact, the film does not need a star like Venkatesh, except to increase its reach. Despite having its share of flaws, especially in the second half, the film proceeds with a tight script and has a nail-biting plot that more than makes up for these minor aberrations. It does starts off on a sluggish note, but catches pace as the movie progresses and succeeds in keeping the audience glued to their seats.

If you have watched the original, the Telugu version might disappoint you. But if you are watching it for the first time, it is bound to thrill you. Though it is being looked upon as a brave experiment in Telugu, the industry is hopeful that such experiments will surely help directors to tackle diverse subjects in the coming days.

Bottomline: A rare ‘Drishyam’

Drishyam 2 movie review: Mohanlal is back in a surprisingly satisfying sequel to a spectacular first film

Mohanlal and Jeethu Joseph are back together and theydunnit again in Drishyam 2: The Resumption

Drishyam 2 movie review: Mohanlal is back in a surprisingly satisfying sequel to a spectacular first film

Language: Malayalam

By any yardstick, the 2013 blockbuster Drishyam is a hard act to follow. Writer-director Jeethu Joseph’s crime thriller starring Mohanlal, Meena, Asha Sharath and Siddique was so well-rounded in the writing and execution of its murder-and-subsequent-cover-up mystery and such a box-office superhit that it was remade in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi and Kannada, headlined by some of the biggest male stars of those industries, in addition to foreign revisitations in Sinhalese and Mandarin.

At the time, Jeethu was questioned about his script drawing on Japanese novelist Keigo Higashino’s The Devotion of Suspect X , but he denied the charge and said he was inspired instead by a real-life incident. Be that as it may, Drishyam 2: The Resumption  is all the redemption he needs. In a country that does not have a great track record with whodunnits, pulling off a brilliant howdunnit and howhegotawaywithit like Drishyam was an achievement. Returning with a howhe’sstillgettingawaywithit and actually pulling it off is nothing short of incredible.

Drishyam 2 is a surprisingly satisfying sequel to a spectacular first film.

Jeethu Joseph’s new crime drama is set in the same Kerala town where the events of its precursor took place. Georgekutty (Mohanlal) is now the owner of a cinema theatre. His prosperity is reflected in the larger, posher house he currently occupies with his wife Rani (Meena) and their daughters Anju (Ansiba) and Anu (Esther Anil) on the same land where they earlier lived. He is still movie crazy. Rani and he are still a committed couple yet constantly sniping at each other as before. And they are still a rock-solid team in the upbringing of their girls.

The difference between then and now is twofold. First, the townsfolk had backed the family when IG Geetha Prabhakar (Asha Sharath) got after them on the suspicion that they killed her son. They are not so supportive any more, driven as they are by jealousy at Georgekutty’s rise in life.

Second, the experiences of Drishyam have had a deep psychological impact on both Rani and Anju. Rani is tormented by Georgekutty’s refusal to ever discuss what happened back then. The first half of Drishyam 2 constructs their continuing trauma and gradually establishes the fact that the police never gave up on the case. The second half is about the resumed investigation.

Like romances that end on happily ever after and steer clear of uncomfortable truths in everyone’s “after”, suspense sagas require viewers not to think too much about what happens once the curtain falls. Drishyam 2 is clever in the way it smoothly slips back into the world of Drishyam and explores in the most believable fashion occurrences that would be inevitable if such a crime were to be committed in real life.

The result is that nothing about Drishyam 2 feels contrived, nor does it come across as an opportunistic effort to cash in on the success of Drishyam . On the contrary, it now feels as if Part 1 is incomplete without Part 2.

This is not to suggest that Drishyam 2 is flawless. Without giving away any spoilers, let us just say that the first big break the police get here comes through a means employed ostensibly without the multiple clearances it would require from various authorities. Yet the officer responsible for this decision is later shown to be a stickler for legal processes. Why would a man who otherwise goes by the book risk engaging in an extra-legal activity, when any evidence thus gathered cannot stand in a court of law?

Even with this loophole, Drishyam 2 is an enjoyable experience, not only because of the tension of wondering whether Georgekutty, Rani and their daughters will finally crack, but also because Jeethu paints a convincing picture of small-town life, displays an understanding of human psychology and ties up most other loose ends neatly.

Of course this is still a patriarchal universe that rests on the father-as-protector trope. And in a fleeting moment that adds absolutely nothing to the plotline, a policeman is shown loudly stating that laws to protect women are misused – removing that line would have taken nothing away from the film, but the fact that the writer chose to feature it does indicate a bias in a real-life scenario where this claim is incessantly used to discredit women survivors of violence by people who never rant about the reality that men have forever misused every law and system in existence.

Forgive these missteps, and there is great fun to be had in watching Drishyam 2’s  plot hurtle towards the moving and thoughtful finale. It does take time – perhaps too much time – to pick up pace in the first half and a long song to illustrate Rani’s state of mind does feel superfluous, but after an exciting twist at the mid-point (that I assume would have been the interval if the film had been released in theatres), it is unrelenting.

As a man who always feared that he might one day be found out, Mohanlal in Drishyam 2 is the actor we know he is capable of being when he is not wasting his natural talent on overbearingly loud, spiced-up conventional commercial cinema. He is pitch perfect in his return as Georgekutty, as is Meena, who gets a much more substantial part in the proceedings this time round.

Ansiba and Esther Anil have less to do here than in Drishyam , but they are effective in their small parts.

Asha Sarath and Siddique are just wonderful as Geetha and Prabhakar, the tortured parents desperate for closure. Jeethu sparkles in the writing of these two, retaining empathy for Georgekutty and Rani without at any point villainising the other couple. The flash of humanity that Geetha in particular retains despite her heartbreak and the rage she directs at Georgekutty is the little touch that makes Drishyam special.

Among the additions to the cast this time round, Murali Gopi stands out for his efficient portrayal of a determined policeman. And Anjali Nair is excellent in a crucial supporting part.

When I first heard that Jeethu Joseph was making a sequel to Drishyam , I was cynical. I mean, c’mon, why? Too many film and serial makers have been done in by their inability to stop when the going’s good, the most recent example in the suspense arena being the disappointing Season 2 of the series  Big Little Lies that smashed it out of the park with Season 1. Drishyam was too well done for its legacy to be disturbed by a poor sequel.

But guess what, viewers? That cynicism was misplaced. Jeethu Joseph has dunnit. He really has.

Drishyam 2 is streaming on Amazon Prime Video
