THE Best Way to Handle Kindergarten and Preschool Homework

Shared by Mary Catherine 30 Comments

Learn how to create a meaningful preschool homework plan for your students using a homework calendar. Be sure to check out the rest of my free preschool printables next!

Below I’ll share how to incorporate a preschool homework calendar into your plans. These homework activities are perfect for preschool, pre-k, and kindergarten students.

Be sure to note that this isn’t a “traditional” homework plan. Not by a longshot! Instead, it’s focused on hands-on, age-appropriate activities (rather than inappropriate worksheets and such).

Families reading and building together with text that reads preschool homework

“Miss Mary Catherine, what about homework? Her brothers have homework most nights, and I could really use some help in that department.”

Questions like this one aren’t unusual at preschool and kindergarten Back-to-School Nights or Meet the Teacher gatherings. At least not for me.

Parents want the best when it comes to their children’s education, and it’s often assumed homework is an integral part of that.

But early childhood educators want to do what’s developmentally appropriate and best for their students – and research has shown that traditional homework doesn’t fit into that. So how to do we merge each of these viewpoints?

Table of Contents

Do We Really Need Preschool Homework?

As I mentioned above, I’ve noticed that many parents ask about homework. I think some people assume school and homework go hand-in-hand. I’m referring here to the traditional view of homework, with kids sitting down at the kitchen table to fill out pages and pages of worksheets.

I’m inclined to disagree with that, especially when it comes to early childhood students. Young kids need hands-on learning experiences , both at home and at school, to grasp important early learning concepts. I most definitely don’t think the traditional worksheet homework is appropriate for young kids.

Listening to books read by their parents, free play time at home, and maybe some additional hands-on learning activities are more along the lines of the kind of homework I recommend.

The BEST Way to Handle Kindergarten and Preschool Homework

So we’ve established that sit down, pencil to paper homework isn’t that great for preschool and kindergarten. How, then, should homework be handled?

My suggestion: create a preschool homework plan centered around monthly activity calendars.

Explain the research to the parents, and have a quick chat about developmentally appropriate practice . Stress the importance of down time after school, and encourage daily reading snuggled up with the kids.

At this point, parents might still want something more. That’s where the homework calendars come in.

Kindergarten and preschool homework calendars full of hands-on activities

Kindergarten and Preschool Homework Calendars

The printable homework calendars I’ve sent home are definitely not preschool worksheets . They include a variety of tasks that kids can do – sometimes with their families, and sometimes on their own. My goal is for my students, and their parents, to see how learning can take place in a wide variety of ways. Additionally, kiddos with older siblings love having their own “homework” to complete like their big brother or sister.

To put together homework calendars for your students, brainstorm ideas that cover topics such as:

  • Fine motor skills
  • Gross motor skills
  • Helping others
  • Self-help skills

Try to keep the daily activities simple, with some ideas the kids can do on their own and some they can try with their parents or siblings. Some of the calendar ideas can relate to your preschool themes , seasons or holidays, or everyday helping tasks.

These homework calendars can go home in their personalized folders at the beginning of the month, with the kids returning them at the end of the month. They can also just be used as suggestions when parents ask about homework for preschool kiddos.

Preschool Homework Ideas

As I mentioned earlier, using monthly calendars for preschool homework is NOT like traditional paper-and-pencil homework. The calendars are meant to be filled with developmentally-appropriate activities kids can do at home.

If you need some ideas to add to the calendars, here you go:

  • Go for a walk outside and count the trees.
  • Tell your family about what you did on the playground today.
  • Listen to a family member read a book.
  • Try to do 5 jumping jacks.
  • Draw a picture of your favorite animal.
  • Sing a song to your family.

As you can see, these are simple and very appropriate activities for young children. And none of them are focused on tracing the number 1 twenty times.

I’d love to hear your thoughts now! How do you handle preschool homework (or kindergarten homework)?

A Year’s Worth of Preschool Homework Calendars

I’m so excited to share with you how you can get a hold of the rest of the calendars now! I’ve received a lot of wonderful emails asking for an entire year’s worth of calendars. Thanks so much for reaching out – I love hearing from you!

So here it is – a full year’s worth of editable homework calendars. It’s a set that includes homework calendars for every month of the year. Each calendar is an editable printable, and there are three versions:

  • One has seasonal clip art,
  • One has non-seasonal clip art, and
  • One doesn’t have any clip art. Each month has a version that’s already full of activity ideas, along with a blank version (but you’re able to edit every single version).

I’m happy to share one of my homework calendars with you. It’s even editable! That way, teachers (and parents!) can put their own spin on the homework.

How to Use the Activity Calendar

Grab the September homework calendar PDF and open it up. Click on any of the editable areas and make your own changes. You can change:

  • The directions at the top of the calendar
  • The date (just the number)
  • Each of the homework tasks within the squares

Then print out the calendar and share with your students’ parents. You’re welcome to leave everything the way I’ve written it too. That’s what I am loving about editable PDFs – the flexibility of customizing documents.

Take a look at the homework calendars in action in the video below:

Supplies to Keep at Home

Our homework calendars have some great examples of short learning prompts to give to challenge your children with. On top of those prompts, I think it’s really important to spend quality time playing with your children each day as well.

But it can be difficult to bring out our-inner child to play with our actual child. That’s why I’ve created this list of some things to play with your kids. Check it out below!

I may get commissions for purchases made through links in this post.

  • Build with blocks
  • Play with toy vehicles
  • Pretend play with various play sets
  • Play dress up with costumes and masks
  • Work a puzzle
  • Play age-appropriate games with the whole family
  • Bounce, throw, and kick playground balls back and forth
  • Color in coloring books or draw pictures
  • Read stories
  • Draw with sidewalk chalk
  • Create crafts
  • Let your child decide!

Just follow your child’s lead and the two of you are sure to have a blast! Remember – your child will cherish any time you spend with them. They’ll cherish that quality time even more when you’re investing in them and doing something they love. So don’t worry about embarrassing yourself or looking silly. In my book, the sillier – the better!

Any early childhood teacher that has had child development knows that that kind of pressure on young children is not age appropriate. I would not put recommend a preschool or kindergarten that required their students to do real homework.

I have sent home games that children really like and want to share with parents. I have also suggested games and activities that parents can do with their child to help develop a skill but I always emphasized the need to be careful not to force a child to do an activity.

July 31, 2017 at 11:21 am

Love your ideas! That’s why I like the activity calendars – suggestions for families but no stress if it gets done or not. Definitely no traditional homework (I honestly don’t like it for elementary school either).

This set includes an entire year’s worth of editable, printable homework calendars. And they’re pre-filled with engaging ideas that are just right for preschool and per-kindergarten.

These arenā€™t anything like traditional homework, donā€™t worry.

Each weekday has a simple activity for the children to do (like ā€œdraw a picture of the friends in your classā€, ā€œhelp with the dishesā€, ā€œfind 5 things that are redā€, etc.).

Editable, Printable Homework Calendars for Preschool

This 150+ page homework calendar pack contains the following:

  • Directions for editing the calendars
  • Suggestions for how to incorporate the calendars into your classroom
  • 3 choices for the month of December
  • 12 already filled in with homework ideas
  • 12 left blank, ready for your ideas

Each of the included calendars (76 in total) is considered an editable printable . That means each of the calendar versions can be customized to include the homework options youā€™d prefer.

The title is also editable so you can change the word “homework” if preferred.

Half of the calendars are already filled in with possible homework activities for your students. Each week includes a math activity, a literacy/language activity, a movement activity, a ā€œhelpfulā€ activity, and a drawing activity.

Please note that the ideas are the same for each month, no matter what the version is. So each of the January calendars have the same activities listed.

Even though ideas are already included in the filled-in calendars, you can edit them depending on your needs. That could mean using some of the suggestions and adding some of your own. That could also mean leaving everything the way it is and using all of the suggested activities provided.

The other half of the calendars are blank. You can edit them directly on the computer by adding your own homework activities. You can also print them out and add hand-written notes if thatā€™s your preference.

Get your free editable homework folder covers here .

Read more about the homework calendars in this introductory post from Fun-A-Day.

Preschool Homework Calendars-Editable, Printable Calendars with an entire year's worth of ideas

I used this for remote learning. It gave parents ideas to work with their child. I encouraged the families to include the whole family in the activities. Many parents and grandparents commented how much fun the activities were. they seemed to enjoy doing the many different types fo activities and having a choice of what to do.

Marcia S. via TpT

Thank you so much! Not only is it engaging for my Pre K kids but the parents enjoy it too! I also love how it’s editable so I can add in concepts I need the families to work on with their kids!

Melissa R. via TpT

These calendars are a great way to encourage parents to complete simple but effective learning activities with their child. What a time saver for me! I print them on colored paper and they look so professional!

Many of our resources address a wide range of topics. This way we can help you cover many skills in an efficient way that is still fun and engaging for children. In this section we’ve listed the key skills, not necessarily all of them.

The skills taught in this product include:

General FAQ

Please note that itā€™s very important to download the resources to your computer.

Then be sure to open the document in the most up-to-date version of Adobe Reader. Editing isnā€™t consistent when using other programs, and the editable document might not work correctly if you open it in the web browser or another program.

To edit resources like our monthly activity calendars, begin by deleting the original text you want to replace.

You can do this by putting your cursor in the gray/blue editable box, highlighting the text and typing in your replacement text.

Or you can put the cursor at the end of the text and hit ā€œbackspaceā€ to delete the original text. Then type in your preferred replacement text.

Oh no! Nobody wants to waste ink or paper.

Luckily there is a quick fix for this.

Typically the black boxes mean it’s time to update your version of Adobe Reader. You can do that for free here:  https://get.adobe.com/reader/

Once you’re sure you have the current version of Adobe Reader be sure you are opening the file in Adobe Reader instead of your web browser or a web preview.Ā

Print the file from your computer, rather than a phone or a tablet.

If you are still having trouble, try these additional trouble shooting tips:

  • When you go to print, choose “Advanced” in the box that pops up.
  • Then click “Print as Image” near the top.

If you’re printing from a Mac, and the above suggestions donā€™t work, try this:

Find the file. Click and hold. Press Control. Choose Open With Adobe.

There is no password needed.

If you are getting prompted to add a password or unable to print/edit, there are typically two troubleshooting steps that will fix the conflict.

1) Update your version of Adobe Reader. They make updates regularly. These updates sometimes trigger the password prompt even though one is not required. You can update your version for free here:Ā  https://get.adobe.com/reader/

2) Also be sure you are opening the file in Adobe instead of your default web browser.

If you purchased an item here from the Preschool Teacher 101 shop, there are two ways to access your files.

We email a copy of your order to the email you used during your purchase. You may use the link in the Download column of that confirmation email to access your files. (Be sure to check spam if you do not see your email in your main inbox.)

You can also always access your files here on our website by logging in and going to to www.preschoolteacher101.com/my-account

From there select “Downloads.” The links to download the file will be under the column Download.

If you bought on TpT, go to the “My Purchases” section on TPT or to the original product listing on TpT to download the file.

So you clicked the link on your website or in your confirmation email, and now you have no idea where to find the download? No worries!

If you’ve clicked that link already while on your computer, you may have the file without realizing it.Ā

If you are on the computer and clicking the download link the file is saved to your computer’s Downloads folder (unless you rightĀ click and save it to a differentĀ location).

Go ahead and double check your Downloads folder to see if the file is already there.

If you still don’t see it, then it’s possible the automatic download was blocked for some reason.

Still no worries! Instead go ahead and right click on the download link and select “Save link as…”. This will open a box to let you save the file anywhere you’d like.

No, all of our resources are instant one-click digital downloads. You will need Adobe Reader (available for free) to download in order to open most of the resources.Ā

Daily Calendar Notebook for Preschool and Kindergarten

Yahoo!  The new Daily Calendar Notebooks for Preschool and Kindergarten are here!

::happy dances all around::

This is the 9th year of the Calendar Notebooks here at Mama’s Learning Corner, and I think they continue to improve each and every year.  I appreciate all of you who continue to use this notebook year after year with your children!

This year I have a BIG CHANGE to the Calendar Notebooks – they are UNDATED!

Read more of this post to find out what exactly that means for you and your children as you use this Calendar Notebook to start your school day!

Regardless of whether your students are Preschool, Kindergarten, or First grade age or stage, you’ll find plenty for your young ones to work through.

Daily Calendar Notebook Undated

What is Included in the Calendar Notebook?

The post contains affiliate links.  For more information, please see my  disclosure policy .

This notebook has a couple of pages to complete each day.  Note that the pages are designed to be placed in  page protectors  and for your child to use a  dry erase marker .

(Yes, I do get the full multi-colored  12-pack of Expo Dry Erase markers .  I let my daughter choose 1 color to use each day.  Just changing colors switches things up a bit!)

If you’re familiar with the Calendar Notebook, you’ll notice that I combined the Preschool and the Kindergarten-First Grade versions again this year.  I got so many emails from parents and teachers that love the combination, so I’ll keep it in this format from now on.

The combined packet makes it easy to differentiate for your students, whether in a homeschool setting or a traditional classroom.

Calendar Notebook Pages

For the past many years, I have updated the graphics each year, and the fonts and layouts as needed.  Usually, I add in several fresh ideas with the extra Daily Learning Pages each year as well.

To be honest, it’s kind of grown into a beast and I needed to streamline it this year.  I exhausted most of my clipart and the new clipart available, so I didn’t have much to add in the way of fresh graphics.

So I made the drastic move to make an UNDATED Calendar Notebook and combine the pages from the last three years.

While there are no “new” graphics this year, I think you will be pleased with the OPTIONS that you will have as you pick and choose which sets of shapes or colors or calendars your child will use.

Of course I give you complete details in the first READ ME file like in the past.  If you need hand-holding, that is where you will find it! ā¤

Calendar Notebook Pages

Here’s what is included in the 160-page printable download:

ā†’ Detailed, comprehensive instructions for how to complete each section, including an assortment of ideas for use.

ā†’ Cover Pages : Choose from multiple different nature scenes – sunshine, grassy area, forest scene with path – suitable for boys and girls

ā†’ Undated Monthly Calendars for July through June : 2 versions – one includes traceable dates and the other includes students writing in the date without a writing prompt; also added Christian versions of April (Easter) and December (Christmas); includes 3 sets

ā†’  Monthly Find the Date Pages for July though June : Students find the dayā€™s date and cross it out on the picture; color or decorate the monthly picture if desired; includes 3 sets

ā†’  ā€˜Today isā€¦ā€™ Page : Determine the day of the week and tomorrow; includes writing the year and acknowledging the current season

ā†’  ā€˜Todayā€™s Weatherā€™ and ā€˜Today I feelā€¦ā€™ Page : Record the dayā€™s weather and students draw a circle around how they feel each day (happy, sad, mad, surprised, sick, etc); includes 2 different emotions/feelings pages from which to choose

Calendar Notebook What Time is It

As a side note,  we frequently play this fun feelings game:

  • I say, ā€œLet me see your sad face.ā€  And everyone (including me) makes their best sad face.
  • I say, ā€œEveryone show their mad face!ā€  Then we all show our growliest mad faces.
  • I say, ā€œLet me see your surprised face.ā€ We then show our most shocked surprised faces.  (This is everyoneā€™s favorite!)
  • Then we end on my saying, ā€œShow everyone your happy face.ā€  And we all end in smiles.

This is a simple game, but so much fun and we play it often!

Itā€™s a great game to play when someone is grumpy.  You just canā€™t participate and be in a bad mood. ā™„

Calendar Notebook Find the Date Pages

ā†’  ā€˜This is how I write my nameā€¦ā€™ Page : Students keep a record of how they write their name each month

ā†’  ā€˜Shapes I Knowā€™ Pages:  Identify and trace specific shapes

ā†’  Alphabet Practice Pages: Practice writing the letters of the alphabet; includes upper and lowercase letters

ā†’  ā€˜I can count toā€¦ā€™ Pages:  Practice counting and tracing numbers 1 through 10

ā†’   ā€˜What time is it?ā€™ Page : Determine the correct time and write in analog and digital

Calendar Notebook Pages

ā†’  ā€˜What time? Page : Practice writing in the correct time of day for snack, reading, etc.

ā†’ ‘What time is it?’ Practice Page : Students listen for the time and then write in the hands of the clocks correctly

ā†’   ā€˜How Many Days Have We Been in School?ā€™ Page : Keep track of days in school with tally marks

ā†’  ā€˜I Can Count Coins!ā€™ Page : Write in the correct value of each coin

ā†’  Days of the Week:  Practice writing the days of the week and their abbreviations

Calendar Notebook 2020-2021

ā†’  Months of the Year:  Practice writing the months of the year and their abbreviations

ā†’   ā€˜My Weather Chart forā€¦ā€™ Page : Record the weather each day; includes charts for July-June

ā†’   Daily Weather Bar Graph : Plot the daily weather at the end of each month and analyze the data

ā†’   ā€˜How Many Sunny Days?ā€™ Page : Use the daily weather chart to track sunny days; compare and contrast each monthā€™s data

ā†’  ā€˜How Many Rainy Days?ā€™ Page : Use the daily weather chart to track rainy days; compare and contrast each monthā€™s data

Calendar Notebook Monthly Calendars

How Do I Set Up the Notebook?

To create your Calendar Notebook, youā€™ll need the following supplies:

ā€“  copy paper ā€“ This is currently the best price!  I just bought this, which will last us the whole homeschool year.  But YIKES that’s still expensive.

ā€“  page protectors  ā€“ I purchased these last year and they held up beautifully.

ā€“  dry erase markers

ā€“  3-ring notebook  ā€“  You  wil l  want the durable notebook, not a cheapy one if you want it to last all year.

– card stock – It’s best to print the weather graphs on card stock since they get so much use; this is the brand that’s most often on sale at Amazon and the one I purchase

Calendar Notebook Daily Extra Pages

You’ll find detailed instructions for setting up the Calendar Notebook in the READ ME FIRST download.

All of the descriptions and how-to’s are laid out clearly so there’s no guess work for you.  Just download, print, and place in your notebook!

Hi- Does the packet include something like quarterly assessment pieces to show student growth? Thank you

Can we start this now in June ? Is there anything that makes this unusable for Southern Hemisphere – ie seasons linked with months

May 22, 2020 at 7:27 pm

Hey Debbie, Sadly I did not create it with the Southern Hemisphere in mind (shame on me, I know!). I’m sorry for that. The pictures on the calendars are definitely linked to the season here in the N. Hemisphere. There are certain portions of the calendar where that wouldn’t matter, however – the daily work, the extra learning pages, the weather pages, etc. Next year, I’ll include calendars that don’t have any seasonal pictures at all. Putting that on my to-do list for next year right now. xo, Lauren

June 22, 2020 at 1:02 pm

Thank you for creating and updating these every year. My children really enjoy them each morning as a way to begin our studies! I love them!

I am so glad you love them! I appreciate you coming back each year to download it! xo, Lauren

Do you know when the next calendar will come out? I noticed after buying the all access that this ends in June. I love the format for my 3 year old.

May 20, 2022 at 8:08 pm

Hey Kelsey! Thank you for buying an All Access Pass! I appreciate that! Please let me know if you need any help with it.

I usually have the new calendars out by now, but alas, time has snuck up on me. I won’t work on them this weekend (it’s my birthday!), but my goal is to publish them by Wednesday…and Friday by the latest if too much life happens between now and then. šŸ™‚

They will definitely be published again and SOON! Thank you! xo, Lauren

I love this idea. I really want to try this with my homeschool kiddos. My one child doesnt like paper work. She gets confused and finds it boring. But these look fun and more inviting. Rebecca

May 28, 2022 at 9:17 pm

These notebooks were perfect for my middle girl who hates the physical act of writing (she still does at 13!). Something about the dry erase markers seem to make it more tolerable. šŸ™‚ Hope it works well for your kiddos! ā¤ xo, Lauren

Kindergarten homework made easy! Find a simple and effective way to do homework in kindergarten with these printable and editable homework calendars. #creativekindergarten #kindergartenhomework #homeworkprintable #kindergartenhomeworkprintable

Homework in Kindergarten: is it a good idea and how you should do it to make it valuable to your students and their families? Take a look at this monthly homework Ā for kindergarten printable and editableĀ calendars .

Giving homework in kindergarten can be hard. You need parental involvement, and it can be difficult for some families to find time to complete it. One of my co-workers wanted a monthly calendar that students could do with their families. I created these editable monthly homework challenges so that families can complete the activities on their own time. They won’t need a lot of materials, and they can easily be done in a few minutes.

Keep reading to see what these are all about !

Homework for Kindergarten Printable Calendars

There are 16 challenges to complete every month. Some of them involve writing, some of the activities are hands-on. There is a mix of literacy, math and science challenges.Ā  You only print and send home 1 page per month, no more worrying about photocopying a whole packet for each student.

They are editable!

I have made them editable so that you can change up the challenges to match up with what you are teaching that month. It is editable in PowerPoint, and all you have to do is type in the activity you want your students to complete.

Most asked questions:

Is this mandatory homework for your students? No. We don’t enforce homework for our students, if parents want something to work on at home, they can do these activities. I don’t believe in punishing kindergarten students for not doing their homework – that’s something out of their control.

What do you do when students bring back the completed homework calendar? We celebrate! We highlight their work to the rest of the class, I put a sticker on it and write an encouraging note and send it back home.

I am offering the Summer Challenges page as a FREEBIE! Send it home to families at the end of the year so that students can keep practicing skills that they learned over the summer months.

Do you have these available in Spanish also? I send my homework home in both English and Spanish.

' src=

I do not, but they are editable so you can change the activities to Spanish if you would like to use it!

' src=

I love this idea and I do want to try it in my classroom. Iā€™m just curious on how you track it to see if they have been doing the things on the calendar. Honor system? Not much parent involvement in my school area. Just seeing how to get my parents and the student show me what they have done the work at home.

I don’t check to make sure all students do it. We do not have mandatory homework in kindergarten, so this is just for families that need ideas for home.
