Master's Student: So far I’m almost a year into NYU Steinhardt’s online speech program and I love it! For those who don’t mind online learning and can time manage, this is for you. It gives me more flexibility and encourages me to stay on top of asynchronous work for my zoom meets. Another big plus about this program and why I chose it is that I did not graduate with a bachelor’s in speech or CSD. This program offers most prerequisite classes that extend your plan of study but is so worth it. The only down side is the prerequisites required by ASHA cannot be taken through their program. So while I have taken statistics, a biological and behavioral /social science during my undergrad I will need to take a physical science outside of the program before I start my clinic/practicums. Overall, many of my peers seem to enjoy the program too and even though the program is online for me, the helpfulness and acceptance from professors is truly unmatched. ... Read 28 reviews

Master's Student: The inclusion classes are great. Some of the professors exhibit some microaggressions, but for the most part the education is good. It is a smaller school, so everybody knows each other, which can be good or bad, depending on how you look at it. Overall a pretty good school, but my undergrad was better so I tend to compare the two. ... Read 1 review

Master's Student: the best part about this experience is all of the hands-on experience we get. i am in th mental health counseling program, and most of our work is split between educaitonal courses and practicum courses, where we can actually practice our therapy skills. It is very helpful for someone like me, who wants to be a therpist but does not have much individual counseling experience. The only downside that I can identify is the lack of guidance when it comes to certain administrative things, such as course registration. the class schedule is layed out perfectly for us., but registration is a bit difficult due to some unorganization on some peoples part. ... Current Master's student: The program I am in is the Mental Performance Masters program. This program for me so far has been exceptional. The course I am taking along with the professors and their mastery of the topic make this program amazing. For someone that minored in psychology in undergrad, I fit into the style of this program very well. I went from constant lectures with my major courses in undergrad, to now discussing topics every day in class and applying it in role play scenarios. When it comes down to topics and theories, since I have been able to apply them first-hand, I feel a lot more confident with my ability to practice the things I have learned without hesitation. ... Balancing work and school can be very overwhelming, especially in the beginning. Anytime I needed extra help or time with assignments or anything, my professors were so kind and understanding. Education & Special Education

Education & Special Education

Our Master's programs in Education & Special Education are designed for experienced teachers seeking an advanced degree and students at the beginning of their careers.

Completion of a program leads to a Master of Science degree as well as certification in both general and special education (birth-grade 2 or grades 1-6) or special education (grades 7-12), upon your meeting all NYSED requirements, including taking required seminars and workshops, filing fingerprints with NYSED, and passing NYS teacher certification exams.

We offer three programs:

What you’ll learn.

Whatever your program, you’ll be exposed to the latest evidence-based teaching theories and methods and how to integrate common core learning standards into your teaching. You’ll learn how critical it is to understand the various cultural contexts of the New York City metro area’s large and diverse student body. You’ll also get ample time putting what you’ve learned into  practice in actual classrooms .

Explore the important role that home life and community plays in a child’s emotional and academic development, as well as innovative approaches to encourage creative and critical thinking.

Take state-required seminars and workshops  on topical concerns such as child abuse, school violence prevention, substance abuse, child safety, autism and bullying and harassment. We also offer test prep workshops to help prepare you for your teacher certification exams.

Make sure to review our admissions requirements and certification guidelines , and contact us with any questions.

Online Option

The three programs described above may be completed online, with the exception of field experience and practicum courses, which require work in actual school classrooms. All online courses are asynchronous (students are not required to log on and meet at specific times during the semester) and are offered through the Canvas platform. Online courses use the same syllabi and have the same student learning objectives as live courses. Check if online courses are right for you.

Matriculated & Non-Matriculated Students

Non-matriculated students can  apply and register online . Non-matriculated students taking online courses should contact Virginia Seda, Online Site Director, at  [email protected]  for advisement on the courses to take to achieve their goals.

Matriculated students should meet with their program personnel and register through the  TouroOne portal .

NYC Teaching Fellows – Adolescent Special Education (MSEd)

Welcome to the NYC Teaching Fellows – Adolescent Special Education (MSEd) program home page. Use this page as a guide to the program from acceptance to graduation.

The New York City Teaching Fellows (NYCTF) is an alternative teacher preparation program leading to New York State teacher certification. The NYCTF program is a collaboration among the New York City Department of Education, CUNY, and certain private universities in New York City. Students teach full time in high needs New York City public schools while studying at partner universities and participating in continuous supervision and professional development. Tuition costs are subsidized at approximately 50% by the NYCDOE and students are not responsible for any tuition payments until their second year in the program. Upon successful completion of the two-year program, students earn a master’s degree and are eligible for New York State initial teacher certification.

Clinical Experiences

First summer – pre-service fieldwork.

As required by New York State law governing alternative certification programs, you will participate in pre-service fieldwork during your first summer. You will be placed in a NYCTF Training Academy hosted by an NYC summer school. Pre-Service Training (PST) is managed by the NYCTF office.

First and Second Year

As a participant in the Teaching Fellows program, you are required to be hired by a high-need NYC public school as a full-time teacher in your certification area. Once you begin teaching, all fieldwork requirements can be completed in your capacity as a full-time teacher. You are not required to complete additional fieldwork beyond your full-time teaching position.

Learning Lab

As a participant in the NYC Teaching Fellows Adolescent Special Education program you will enroll in Learning Lab during your second year. Learning Lab is a required year-long clinical experience embedded in SPED 777. This lab draws on the lectures and materials from the methods courses in your program. In this clinical teaching practicum, you will be required to tutor a student with an IEP twice weekly to address individualized goals of the student and practice use of specialized, research based methods for students with disabilities. This tutoring must take place outside of regular class time. You will receive specific information and support about the tutoring requirements in your SPED 777 courses. You will tutor a student at your school and participate in a hybrid seminar. Per the Hunter College School of Education progress standards, you must receive a grade of at least a B in Learning Lab. If you receive a grade of B- or lower you must apply to the department chair for permission to retake the course. Students who earn an F in Learning Lab will not be allowed to continue in the program.

SUNY Empire Academic Catalog

Adolescent special education, master of education.

Empire State University’s Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Adolescent Special Education program is a 33-42 credit program available fully online but requiring access to New York S tate schools. The program’s philosophy and subsequent courses are based on an inclusive model that prepares teacher candidates for collaboration and co-teaching in the inclusion classroom. Completion of this degree program and passing scores on the New York State Teacher Certification Examinations lead to New York State Students with Disabilities 7-12 Generalist Initial and Professional certification. It is designed for those already teaching and certified in New York State but looking for additional certification in Students with Disabilities.

In addition to their coursework, students will complete 50 hours of pre-residency classroom field observations, one residency term under the supervision of a special education critic teacher, and a capstone action research project to meet program requirements leading to Initial Certification.

Program Delivery and Tuition Rate

This master’s program is delivered through online courses. However, the clinical residency experience (four weeks) must be completed in a New York State school. The program is billed at the non-MBA rate.

Admission to this program is selective. This program enrolls new students in the fall term only. A candidate must hold a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution and provide proof of New York State teaching certification.

An ideal candidate will:

  • possess 24 credits in the liberal arts and sciences distribution (6 credits in Math, Science, Social Studies and English), and
  • have a cumulative GPA of 3.0, or the equivalent

An applicant who meets all other admissions requirements and has no more than 6 credits of liberal arts course deficiencies may be admitted to the program. The student must resolve the deficiencies prior to beginning the clinical residency experience.

Application

Please see the Graduate Admission section of this catalog for a complete listing of materials required to complete a graduate application.

Program Curriculum

The M.Ed. in Special Education is a 33-42 credit program including classroom observations and residency. The required courses of the degree are outlined in the table below. Some or all foundation courses may be waived at the point of admission. Students should consult with their academic advisor regarding course sequencing and foundation courses.

Enrollment Sequence

The suggested enrollment sequence below is based on a fall term start and a part-time schedule. Students should seek consultation with their academic advisor to determine their sequencing. The sequence includes all foundational courses (9 credits). See footnote. 1

These are foundational courses and can be waived with appropriate documentation. Candidates who are deficient in one or more core foundational courses will be required to take those courses as part of their program of study.

Upon successful completion of the program, students will be able to:

  • Collaborate with families, related service providers, and other school personnel to design and implement individualized curricula for students with disabilities;
  • Develop transition services in consultation with relevant stakeholders;
  • Critically evaluate research in special education;
  • Articulate the philosophy and classroom application of inclusive education;
  • Make instructional and environmental modifications based on students’ learning needs;
  • Assess behavior to develop and implement a behavior intervention plan;
  • Demonstrate effective classroom management practices involving students with disabilities;
  • Assess and interpret data to design and implement individualized instruction;

Offered in partnership with the New York Early Childhood Professional Development Institute (PDI) the Child Development Associate (CDA) Certificate at the CUNY School of Professional Studies is the only comprehensive credit-bearing Child Development Associate (CDA) certificate in New York City. The program provides students not only with the required coursework but also advisement, writing support, portfolio creation, career services, and classroom observation in pursuit of the Child Development Associate Credential.

Students in the program:

  • Demonstrate the use of the developmental perspective in their work with young children and families
  • Support second-language learners and children with special needs in early childhood education programs effectively
  • Examine and reflect on their teaching, both orally and in writing
  • Apply effective classroom practices and create developmentally appropriate learning environments
  • Use strategies and techniques to strengthen connections between their centers and children's homes
  • Use skills and resources to assist parents in caring effectively for their children

Students are expected to complete 120 hours of fieldwork per course at a licensed childcare program, regardless of whether a student intends to pursue the CDA. In the last course (EDUC 203), fieldwork will be observed by an assigned fieldwork observer. A vital source of evidence of a student’s skills is actual hands-on work as a teacher with children and families, which also provides a student with an opportunity to learn through experience. Fieldwork offers students an opportunity to see their practice in light of new knowledge from the CDA coursework.

Students currently employed by a licensed program serving children birth – 5 years can utilize their place of employment for their fieldwork hours. Students who are not employed by a licensed program will be placed in a site that is agreed upon by the instructor and student. Students are expected to complete 480 hours of fieldwork prior to completion of the certificate program.

Career Prospects

The certificate is designed for preschool teachers, childcare workers, and other individuals looking to work in Early Childhood Education. The nationally recognized Child Development Associate Credential has been accepted as a state requirement for working in many early childhood centers.

The structure and curriculum of the CDA Certificate are designed to complement the Child Development Associate National Credentialing Program’s Competency Standards. Students who complete the requirements of these credit-bearing courses, with faculty advisement, can go on to submit a portfolio to the Council for Professional Recognition in order to earn the CDA Credential.

Credits earned through the successful completion of these CDA courses may also be applied to degree programs, thus establishing the foundation for career advancement.

Early Childhood Career Development Center

The Early Childhood Career Development Center provides comprehensive career development services to all current and aspiring early childhood professionals at no cost to the provider. For more info, visit:  https://earlychildhoodny.org/cdsc/cda.php

Scholarship Opportunities

Eligible students can take advantage of the following scholarship opportunities:

Kanbar Institute of Film & Television Graduate Film

Be a part of the next wave..

The Graduate Film program is an intensive three-year conservatory in the Maurice Kanbar Institute of Film and Television that trains students in the art of cinematic storytelling. We focus on helping writer/directors develop a narrative voice and the technical virtuosity to express that voice in cinema.

Students learn by doing, in the classroom and on set. They write, direct, and produce multiple films and exercises, shooting and crewing on each other's projects. Our students transition into the professional world with a reel of short films that showcase their talent, a feature film script, and a range of highly sought technical skills.

The Graduate Film Program offers a stimulating, challenging, and diverse creative community in the heart of Greenwich Village. Our faculty are working professionals who are committed to developing the next generation of filmmakers.

Health Informatics (MS)

Health Informatics is a cutting-edge discipline and a natural fit to support all health professions. It is a developing discipline with an emphasis on technology as an integral tool to organize, analyze, manage, and use health information, clinical data, images, and knowledge for patient care, health education, administration and research. It is one of the fastest growing fields with a positive job outlook that provides an excellent opportunity to build a career.

The Master of Science in Health Informatics is a STEM designated program offered by the Health Informatics Program in the School of Health Professions (SOHP). The program consists of a 39-credit curriculum (30-credit core and 9-credit electives) that emphasizes on clinical informatics, human computer interaction, electronic health records, evaluation of healthcare information system, clinical data management, health data analytics and visualization.

The program is flexible and can be completed on a full-time or part-time basis. The complete MS program is offered in both traditional in-person and distance learning (online) format for student enrollment. In-person classes are offered in the evening, which works well for working professionals who work during the day. The completely online curriculum option is offered in asynchronous format with optional weekly live sessions (evening only) for students to interact with course instructors and other students which are recorded and made accessible to enrolled students.

The program offers  the opportunity to thrive in a conducive learning environment with a tightly-knitted support system. Rigorous training opportunities are provided and offered to the students to enhance and develop the necessary skills needed to succeed in a health informatics career.
