Speech on Healthy Lifestyle

A healthy lifestyle is not just a phrase, it’s a way of living that can brighten your life. It’s about making choices that support your well-being and make you feel good. You may wonder what it really means or how you can achieve it.

Living well means more than just eating your greens and exercising regularly. It’s about finding balance in all areas. It’s about listening to your body and making choices that honor your needs. It’s about living a life that feels good from the inside out.

1-minute Speech on Healthy Lifestyle

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, today we talk about something close to all our hearts – a healthy lifestyle. We all want to lead a happy, long life, right? Well, that’s where a healthy lifestyle comes in.

First, let’s talk about food. You know how cars need the right fuel to run? Our bodies are the same! We need fruits, vegetables, proteins, and grains to keep us strong and energetic. Fast food and sugary drinks might taste good, but they don’t provide what our body needs. So, eat a rainbow every day – lots of different colored fruits and vegetables!

Next, exercise. Just like a car needs to move to stay in good shape, our bodies need movement too. You don’t have to run a marathon or lift heavy weights. Simple things like walking, cycling, or playing a game of football with friends can work wonders. Every day, try to make time for some fun physical activity.

Sleep is another key part. When we sleep, our bodies repair and recharge. Make sure to get enough sleep every night. It’s like giving your body a mini-holiday!

Lastly, mental health is as important as physical health. Keep your mind happy and healthy by doing things you love, spending time with people who make you smile, and taking time to relax and unwind. It’s okay to say no when things get too much. Remember, it’s your life!

In conclusion, a healthy lifestyle is like a puzzle, made of many pieces – good food, exercise, sleep, and mental well-being. They all fit together to create a picture of a happy, healthy life. Start today, and remember, every small change counts!

2-minute Speech on Healthy Lifestyle

Good day, everyone! Today, we talk about a subject close to our hearts and bodies – a healthy lifestyle.

Living a healthy life means taking good care of our bodies and minds. It’s like keeping our car engine clean and well-oiled so it runs smoothly. It’s not just about eating apples and doing push-ups. It’s about making choices every day that keep us strong and happy.

First off, let’s talk about food. Our bodies need fuel, just like cars need petrol. We should feed our bodies with healthy food, not junk. Eating fruits, vegetables, grains, and proteins is like feeding our bodies with premium petrol. It makes our bodies run fast, work well, and feel good. Always remember, junk food can make us feel good for a while, but it can harm our bodies in the long run.

Now, let’s talk about exercise. Just as cars need to be driven regularly to keep them in good shape, our bodies need regular movement too. That could be running, jumping, dancing, or even walking. Exercise makes our bodies strong and our minds sharp. It helps us sleep better, think better, and feel better. And you don’t need to run a marathon every day. Even a little bit of exercise done regularly can make a big difference.

Next, let’s talk about rest. Our bodies and minds need rest to recover from work and play. When we sleep, our bodies repair themselves, and our minds sort out what we’ve learned in the day. Good sleep is like a deep clean for our bodies and minds. It helps us wake up feeling fresh and ready for the day. So, make sure you get enough sleep every night.

Lastly, let’s talk about feelings. A healthy lifestyle is not just about the body, it’s also about the mind. It’s important to talk about our feelings and not keep them bottled up. It’s okay to feel sad, angry, or scared. But, it’s important to talk about these feelings with someone we trust. Just like we clean our bodies to keep them healthy, we need to clean our minds of negative feelings too.

So, remember friends, a healthy lifestyle is about making good choices every day. It’s about eating healthy food, doing regular exercise, getting enough sleep, and talking about our feelings. It’s not always easy, but it’s always worth it. We only get one body, and it’s our job to take good care of it. Let’s promise ourselves that starting today, we will live a healthier and happier life.

Essay on Healthy Lifestyle

The top secret of being physically fit is adopting a healthy lifestyle. A healthy lifestyle includes regular exercise, a healthy diet, taking good care of self, healthy sleep habits, and having a physically active daily routine. Lifestyle is the most prevailing factor that affects one’s fitness level. A person leading a sedentary lifestyle has a low fitness level whereas living a healthier life not only makes a person fit but also extends life. Good health has a direct impact on our personality. A person with a good and healthy lifestyle is generally more confident, self-assured, sociable, and energetic.

A good and healthy lifestyle allows one to relish and savor all the pleasures in life without any complications. Even all the wealth is less valuable when compared to sound health. Having all the luxuries in the world does not fulfill its purpose when one is continuously ill, depressed, or suffering from a significant health complication. A healthy person has a clear and calm perception of everything without prejudice. His actions and decisions are more practical and logical and are hence more successful in life.

A good habit is a key factor for a healthy lifestyle. To maintain a stable body and mind, one needs to inculcate good habits. Waking up early in the morning, regularly exercising or a good morning walk helps to keep our body energetic and refresh our mind. Maintaining a balanced and nutritious diet throughout the day is vital for maintaining a good lifestyle. Too much indulgence in alcohol or smoking excessively is not at all appropriate for a healthy lifestyle.

Self-Discipline

Self-discipline is important for maintaining a good lifestyle. When we are self-disciplined then we are more organized and regular in maintaining good health. A disciplined life is a regulated life. A man without discipline is a ship without a rudder. Discipline needs self-control. One who cannot control himself can seldom control others. The level of discipline and perseverance largely determines a person’s success. Self-discipline is the act of disciplining one’s own feelings, desires, etc. especially with the intention of improving oneself. It strengthens our willpower. The stronger our will power the positive will be our decision. It enables us to conquer our own self.

Punctuality

Punctuality is the habit of doing things on time. It is the characteristic of every successful person and everyone must observe punctuality in order to win success in life. Punctuality is necessary for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. It should become a habit with us. A punctual person is able to fulfill all his responsibilities and hence is treated with respect in society. It is needed in every walk of life.

Diet is an important component for overall fitness and works best in combination with exercise. A balanced diet and exercise regularly help to maintain good health. It is necessary to reduce weight if one is overweight or obese, failing which one cannot be physically fit for long. For people with obesity, more exercise and a strict regime are necessary, preferably under guidance. There are many ways of making the diet healthier.

Use less sugar and salt while cooking food.

Use less oil while cooking. Avoid deep-frying as much as possible.

Eat more fruits daily. They provide more vitamins and minerals to our bodies.

Add sprouts of gram and moong dal to at least one meal in a day. Add fiber to your diet. Use whole grains instead of polished cereals. Eat lots of salad and yogurt.

Eat fermented food regularly. Fermented food contains many useful bacteria that help in the process of digestion.

Prevention of Lifestyle Diseases

By adopting a healthy lifestyle one can avoid lifestyle diseases. The following are some ways in which we can prevent lifestyle diseases.

Eat a balanced diet that contains important nutrients. One must include more fresh fruits and green vegetables in the diet. Refrain from eating junk food. Stay away from foods that contain large amounts of salt or sugar.

Exercise regularly. Spend more time outdoors and do activities such as walking, running, swimming, and cycling.

One must avoid overindulgence in alcohol, junk food, smoking, and addiction to drugs and medicines.

Avoid spending too much on modern gadgets like mobile phones, laptops, televisions, etc. Spend time on these gadgets for short intervals of time only.

Set a healthy sleeping routine for every day. Waking early in the morning and going to bed early at night should be a daily habit. Lead an active life.

Unhealthy Lifestyle

Bad food habits and an unhealthy lifestyle such as less or no physical activity may lead to several diseases like obesity, high blood pressure or hypertension, diabetes, anemia, and various heart diseases. An unhealthy lifestyle reduces productivity and creativity in a person. It also adversely affects moods and relationships. It leads to depression and anxiety in human beings.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle not only makes a person confident and productive but also drives him to success. A person with a healthy lifestyle will enjoy both personal and social life.

200 Words Essay On Healthy Lifestyle

Practically everyone, including publications, social media sites, and television, uses the term healthy lifestyle. Through these channels, the need of living a healthy lifestyle is emphasised, yet individuals continue to lead unhealthier lifestyles and ultimately pay the price for it. Living a healthy lifestyle is essential to our daily lives. Having good eating habits, getting enough sleep, and fitting in some physical activity each day are the essential components of a healthy lifestyle. However, the majority of individuals disregard their health in favour of their everyday obligations. The worst thing you can do to yourself is to ignore your health. Many individuals only become aware of this after experiencing health problems.

It's time for people to realise how crucial good health is and how only being healthy will allow us to work effectively on other elements of our life. Just a few little adjustments to the daily schedule are needed to develop these healthy behaviours. Once these modifications become habits, you will soon be living a healthy lifestyle.

To prevent such health problems later in life, it is preferable to set aside some time to practise the healthy behaviours discussed above while you are still young and active.

500 Words Essay On Healthy Lifestyle

It is simple to develop unhealthy habits, but it takes some work to undo them and adopt a healthy lifestyle. Despite how frequently the significance of leading a healthy lifestyle has been emphasised, few people take it seriously. Even those who want to follow it to better their way of life often fail since it requires a lot of willpower to do so. Instead of going overboard, it is advised to take things slowly. Over time, this will assist you in achieving your objective. Here are some tips for creating wholesome habits and leading a healthy lifestyle.

Avoid Bad Habits

Smoking | To live a healthy lifestyle, you must first give up smoking and any other tobacco products to which you may be hooked. It is evident that this cannot be done in a single day and would not be simple. It is advised to seek expert assistance to stop doing the same over time.

Alcohol Numerous health problems might result from excessive drinking. If you are addicted to it, it is advised that you seek professional assistance as well as support from your friends and family to break the habit.

Fast Food | These days, ordering takeaway and eating junk for most of the week has almost become religious. It's time to reduce your consumption of fast food and replace it with wholesome home-cooked meals. You will maintain your health and physical fitness by doing this.

Screen Dependence | Nowadays, the majority of individuals are addicted to their phone displays. You need to stop doing this harmful practice right away. You also need to refrain from watching too much TV or using the computer for too long.

Avoiding Meals- | Nowadays, a lot of individuals choose to skip meals because they are so preoccupied with their work. The majority of people are often busy in the morning, therefore there is a propensity to skip breakfast to fit in other responsibilities. The harshest punishment you can ever give your body is this.

Overusing medication | Many individuals search for quick fixes to ease their physical and emotional suffering, and taking a pill or two is one certain solution. For these individuals, painkillers work best, but it is important to understand that they only provide brief comfort and may have harmful side effects.

It's time to adopt healthy routines. Knowing the behaviours to avoid can help you take steps to stop doing them and replace them with healthy ones. You may take the following actions in this direction:

Restrict your interactions with those who smoke, drink, or engage in other harmful behaviours.

Remind yourself of the advantages of living healthfully.

Do your best to surround yourself with individuals who live the lifestyle you want.

Spend your spare time engaging in your interests and activities so you won't have time for bad habits.

Engage in physical activity to encourage endorphin production. This is a fantastic method to avoid stress and all of its harmful effects.

A balanced diet, regular exercise, sufficient sleep, happiness, and optimism all contribute to a healthy lifestyle. We are living well when we maintain a healthy lifestyle. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is crucial for your happiness now and in the future.

  • To find inspiration for your paper and overcome writer’s block
  • As a source of information (ensure proper referencing)
  • As a template for you assignment

Introduction

General Goal: To persuade.

Specific Goal: At the end of my speech, the audience will be able to differentiate between healthy and unhealthy eating.

Central Idea: People should incorporate healthy eating in their diets contrary to which it increases the risk of developing various diseases.

A report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicate that, while eating nutritious food is essential for enhancing your health, most people consume an unhealthy diet thus increasing the risk of contracting various diseases such as cancer, reduced brain functioning, type 2 diabetes, stroke, heart disease, or being generally obese or overweight (CDC, 2021a). Most people fall into this category, not because they lack the knowledge about healthy eating, but because they chose to ignore the recommended nutritious consumption.

Reveal Your Topic

Today, I will highlight some strategies of healthy eating against which failure to follow them would be detrimental to your health.

Probably, you are thinking that you have been eating unhealthy food and nothing has happened to you. Yet, you may not have experienced some of the risks of poor diet, I am here to illustrate to you why you should always have healthy nutrition to boost your health and avoid common diseases that you could develop in the span of your life.

Credibility Statement

While I am not a qualified doctor or nutritionist, I have conducted ample and elaborate research on the strategies for healthy eating.

Today, I will explore three strategies of healthy eating, their benefits, and consequences if not properly followed.

  • I will first talk about vegetables and fruits
  • Then, I will talk about proteins and carbohydrates
  • Finally, I will discuss saturated fats and sugar

Now that I have given you an overview of my topic today, let’s explore my first major point.

It is recommended that we consume vegetables and fruits regularly to stay healthy.

Consumption of vegetables is integral to the health of our bodies:

  • The Dietary Guidelines for Americans states that people should eat more vegetables to boost their health and prevent themselves from chronic diseases (DietaryGuidelines.gov., 2020).
  • Surprisingly, only 9% of the people consumed the recommended portions of vegetables in their diet (CDC, 2021b).
  • In their book, Vegetables: Importance of Quality Vegetables to Human Health , Asaduzzaman and Asao (2018) illustrate that failure to consume the recommended amounts of vegetables in daily meals is associated with increased risk of cancer and stroke.
  • Moreover, Asaduzzaman and Asao (2018) expound that lack of proper intake of vegetables causes vitamin deficiency diseases such as scurvy (lack of vitamin C) and Sclerosis (lack of vitamin A).

Consumption of fruits is highly encouraged as one of the major eating habits that all people should embrace.

  • In its 2019 publication, World Health Organization (WHO) explains that fruit intake is associated with disease prevention as it enhances the immunity of our bodies.
  • Furthermore, WHO (2019) highlights that fruits reduce the risk of adiposity in adolescents and young children.
  • As its publication shows, failure to take appropriate amounts of fruits leads to increased risk for various diseases such as myocardial infarction.
  • WHO emphasizes that lack of adequate fruit servings in the meals could cause different types of cancer.
  • While fruits are crucial in our nutritious feeding, only 12% of Americans eat the recommended amount of fruits (CDC, 2021b).

TRANSITION: Now that we have talked about vegetables and fruits, let us delve into proteins and carbohydrates.

Proteins and carbohydrates are essential for our bodies

While some people could be vegetarians, the need for proteins in dietary consumption is crucial.

  • The Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2020-2025 indicate that proteins could be obtained from animals such as poultry, meat, seafood, and dairy or plant sources for vegetarians (DietayGuidelines.gov., 2020).
  • Nutrition scholars, Shan et al. (2019) state that proteins are essential to repair body cells besides promoting growth and development in pregnant women, children, and teenagers.
  • Failure to consume the recommended amounts of protein causes various diseases.
  • As Shan et al. (2019) explain, insufficient protein in the body leads to impaired mental health, muscle-tissue shrinkage, weak immune system, marasmus, and ultimately, total organ failure.

Carbohydrates

  • In their article, nutritionists, Shan et al. (2019) note that carbohydrates are needed in the body as a source of the energy we use to perform daily activities.
  • Therefore, it is important to consume the required portions of carbohydrates for our muscles, brain, and other body parts to function normally.
  • According to Shan et al. (2019), failure to meet the recommended carbohydrate intake leads to low blood sugar causing hypoglycemia.
  • Furthermore, Shan et al. (2019) present that carbohydrates deficiency results in ketosis, characterized by bad breath, mental fatigue, joint pains, headache, and nausea.

TRANSITION: Let us now talk about the last major point in my speech, saturated fats, and sugars

It is imperative to avoid saturated fats and sugars

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2020-2025 recommend that people should limit the consumption of saturated fats to live healthy lives.

  • The food we consume must stay within one’s calorie needs for our bodies to operate normally.
  • People are not supposed to eat excess calories beyond the levels recommended in the Dietary Guidelines.
  • The Dietary Guidelines call upon Americans to consume foods with the least amounts of saturated fats (less than 10% of the total calories consumed per day, DietaryGuidelines.gov, 2020).
  • CDC (2021a) reports that excessive saturated fats cause higher levels of blood cholesterol eventually leading to heart diseases or stroke.

Besides, the Dietary Guidelines recommend that Americans’ choice of beverages and single food should be nutrient-dense but, with no added processed sugars.

  • A healthy dietary habit limits the amount of processed sugars to fewer than 10% of the total calories consumed daily (DietaryGuidelines.gov, 2020).
  • CDC (2021a) posits that consumption of sugar is the root cause of type 2 diabetes, well as increased risk of heart disease and obesity among Americans.

TRANSITION TO CLOSE: As I conclude my speech today, I would like to remind you that the principal capital asset in our lives in good health.

Re-State Central Idea

Incorporating healthy eating in our diets is critical but, lack of it increases the risk of developing the various disease.

Today we have talked about strategies of healthy eating, their benefits, and consequences if not properly followed.

  • First, we talked about vegetables and fruits
  • Then, we explored proteins and carbohydrates
  • Finally, we discussed about saturated fats and sugar

Tie Back to Audience

I hope as you leave this place today, you have appropriate information that would encourage you to observe healthy eating habits.

Closure Statement

While most people have the necessary information we need about dietary consumption; nutrition-related diseases are on the rise. From today, everyone must take full responsibility for their eating habits.

Speech on Healthy Lifestyle

The speaker delivers a speech on healthy habits to the principal, teachers, and students of SMK Taman Desa. They ask the audience to reflect on their eating, sleeping, and exercise habits and stresses the importance of adopting healthy habits. They advise against consuming too much sweet or salty food, drinking soft drinks, and skipping meals, and encourage drinking more water and eating meals at regular times. A very good afternoon to the principal of SMK Taman Desa, teachers and my dearly beloved friends. It really gives me great pleasure to deliver you a speech today on healthy habits. Put on your thinking cap; try asking yourself, have you been on healthy diets? Have you gotten sufficient rest each day? Or even, have you been performing healthy lifestyle by doing sports regularly? Your answer lies with yourself. If you do not, start off with some basic healthy habits. Here are some advices… Avoid eating too much sweet or salty food.

Normally, these sweet or salty food are not healthy food because of the excessive salt and sugar content in the food product. Nevertheless, after a prolonged period of time having such bad eating habits, it shall direct us to diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure. It has been kid’s nature to love tasty food without having any healthy eating mindset. As we’re older, change our diet by cutting down on sugar and salt food products starting from today! It would definitely be a healthier lifestyle with a longer lifespan. Moreover, I believe many of us here have enjoyed Chinese New Year.

Without paying upfront

Picturing all the junk food and soft drinks, I ought to advise you to have a good habit on drinking more water instead of soft drinks. One of the leading factors to heavy obesity is the huge consumption of soft drinks because it is high in calories and sugar, but low in nutrients. In conjunction with that, tooth decay, caffeine dependence and bone weakening are too mostly likely caused by soft drinks. Skipping meals are also one of the bad habits of students. Due to how young generation nowadays accentuate on their physical appearance, many of them skip meals to bring up a “good image”.

Well, it is a wrong perception which needed to be given advices on to put an end to it. Eat meals at regular times, breakfast, which is the most important meal of all and so needed to be taken care of whereas lunch and dinner at a suitable amount. Those among you who have slimming or cutting weight tendencies, please be advised to not skipped meals but have more meals in smaller portion. Again, it is a healthier lifestyle to be followed. Last but not least, practice having more rest and doing more sports during regular times.

We should never give excuse to not sleep or do sports due to large piles of homework, heavy bundle of house chores or even social stress. Why? Because if we do not have sufficient rest, we wouldn’t not have enough energy for daily activities and it shall disrupt our immune system. If we do not do sports, it affects our health to be worsened as our blood circulation was not improved. After all, keeping a good health should always be our main priority. Without good health, we would be prone to a lot of sickness and diseases. Prevention is always better than cure, mark that. Thank you.

2024 Mental Health Essay Contest Awardee: Silver

Behind a Perfect Life

Kathleen, maryland.

Kathleen, 2024 NIH Mental Health Essay Contest awardee

Looking at me, you may see an energetic, passionate girl, always smiling and laughing. I have an amazing family, wonderful friends, and a great life, but that doesn’t mean my life is perfect.

Smile. If you pretend to be fine, no one will notice. I would tell myself this when the nervous butterflies almost pushed me to tears, when I would constantly double-check to make sure I didn’t leave my flat iron on, or when I forced my mom to stay up so I wasn’t the last one awake in our house. Even though I pretended everything was okay, I could never stop my mind from racing. I had a permanent pit in my stomach and didn’t feel happy, confident, or hopeful.

I have struggled with anxiety since I was seven years old, but I didn’t know that the pit in my stomach wasn’t normal. I didn’t know what anxiety or obsessive-compulsive disorder were, and I didn’t have anywhere to learn about mental health challenges.

Eventually, I was able to open up to my parents and make the decision to go to therapy, where I was diagnosed with several mental health issues. Through the help of my parents and therapist, I learned how to cope with my mental health challenges, but I was scared to tell all my friends what I was going through. I didn’t understand that many people have mental health issues, and it isn’t something to be ashamed about. Until my sophomore year of high school, I never told anyone about my experiences with mental health because I was ashamed. I thought that people who went to therapy were crazy, and I didn’t want people to think of me that way.

By opening up about my mental health journey, I have learned about other friends who struggle just like me, and I have been able to help people understand mental health. But, there is still a stigma surrounding mental health.

While talking about mental health has helped some of my friends, it isn’t going to stop the negative connotations surrounding mental health. There needs to be something in schools that everyone is a part of so people can learn.

I propose that each school have a mental health center within the guidance counselor's office. The space will be designed for people to go if they need someone to talk to. The mental health center will have professionals who are willing and able to talk to students about their well-being. Having a place specifically designed for people to go if they are having mental health issues gives students a safe space where no one will judge them.

The mental health counselors will be available to help students within the safe space, have regular meetings with students, and hold assemblies at the beginning of each quarter. Students will be required to talk to a counselor at least three times a semester. This ensures that if anyone is struggling and doesn’t know it, they can get help. During the assemblies, they can share the symptoms of different mental health disorders, what they can do to help themselves or a friend, and share a list of resources outside the school for people struggling with their mental health. This would have helped me when I was younger because I didn’t know what I was feeling. If people were talking about mental health and I had a space to share my thoughts and feelings, I may have been diagnosed earlier and learned methods to cope with my mental health struggles.

Hopefully, talking about mental health and giving students a safe space will teach students there is nothing to be ashamed of. By regularly discussing mental health, we will teach students about themselves and destigmatize mental health disorders.

Grammar, Speech, Rhetoric, & the Fate of Humanity

Could a fifty-year-old, small book on grammar, speech, and rhetoric by a nearly-forgotten thinker have the power to revolutionize and re-awaken our decadent intellectual life?

healthy lifestyle essay speech

Eugen Rosenstock-Huessy

Eugen Rosenstock-Huessy (1888-1973) might not recognize, in 2018, the America to which he came in 1933, seeking refuge from a Germany that had just elected Hitler. A Christian convert from Judaism, a professor of law and a brilliant student of languages, Rosenstock first alighted at Harvard, where he taught for a year or two. Harvard didn’t quite know what to do with him, because Rosenstock had a way of talking about God’s influence in history—and Harvard was already by then parading its secular credentials. Rosenstock was offered a professorship at Dartmouth, where he taught until his retirement in 1957. He brought forth an understanding of speech and language based upon social realities. It is a view sorely needed for a humanity whose thinking has been corrupted by abstractions of scientism.

But speech is crucial. Rosenstock often reminded us of this, and he even came up with a sociological paradigm. The word “paradigm” is actually appropriate, for it is a term from grammar, and Rosenstock’s great gift was the “grammatical method.” It doesn’t sound like much until you investigate it; but when  you investigate and live with it, it becomes, like all things, simple, commonsensical, and true—indeed, indispensable.

Rosenstock believed that grammar was the key to a new sociology, and ultimately the key to a more humane society. We have for the past couple of centuries believed that truth is confined to the “Indicative,” whose model is the mathematical statement: 2+2 = 4. Indicatives are statements of fact. They are “Objective statements.” Our new atheists are masters of pretending that only the objective statements, the indicatives, can be taken seriously, and they parade their antics of the Indicative Mode ad infinitum ad nauseam. But they might be surprised and chagrined to learn that the indicative is only the end of a grammatical process that begins with the Imperative “You,” migrates to the Subjective “I,” and finds its historical and institutional common ground in the “We.”

Indicatives have gone through the process of “happening,” and what has happened has not sprung, like Athena, from the head of Zeus. What has happened has antecedents, and these antecedents are reflected in our grammar, which in turn reflects social encounters, public events, political choices and collective decisions. And amidst these encounters, religion and rituals have played a decisive part. The mere indicative, one wants to tell those New Atheists, is a withered branch that cannot root and cannot grow.

It is for this reason that Rosenstock calls our human life, and the speech that frames it, crucial , and he illustrates this with a diagram, the Cross of Reality:

healthy lifestyle essay speech

What is unique about the Cross of Reality is not that it is in the shape of a Cross—Rosenstock often said it was not intended to be a religious image. What is significant is that the vertical subject-object pole, so familiar to our philosophical heritage, is bisected by the horizontal temporal pole: future and past.

Our life, on the Cross of Reality, always demands continual adjustment and fine-tuning. It begins with the call—in older grammar, the Vocative—the Imperative. The “You” calls the “I” into life and into the process of finding our task. In reaching this state we are then in a position to seek alliances and community with others, to bond in common projects and contribute to historical narratives. We have become “We.”  Only at the end of this process do we get objective facts and situations, the things that have actually happened, that can be measured and evaluated.  Thus he comments, in his book Speech and Reality , “It is the pressure and seriousness of the imperative form on which depend the fruitfulness of all our indicatives.”

If this small book—originally published in 1970 by Argo Books, an imprint established by one of Rosenstock’s devoted students—could be more widely known, especially among students of language, history, literature and all forms of what used to be called “rhetoric”—it would have the power to revolutionize and re-awaken our decadent intellectual life. Containing essays on “Articulated Speech,” “In Defense of the Grammatical Method,” “Grammar as Social Science,” “How Language Establishes Relations,” “The Individual’s Right to Speak,” among others, the book goes to the root of our toxic and debased notion of “individualism”—a notion which has been so destructive of social bonds, culture, and shared history. How does he do this? By making the statement that “an individual becomes a person by being able to represent speaker and listener both within one person.” To be able to listen is to become a “You”—to wait, to become receptive, and yes, perhaps, even a bit humble. The “You,” that is, the grammatical second person,  Rosenstock remarks elsewhere,  is the principle of mental health—“Life in the second grammatical person is the basis for renewal of both men and peoples, and it will remain so.”

It is refreshing to hear these words. For American life is one long indoctrination into “self-esteem” and aggressive individualism. We have become sick with ourselves and of ourselves. It is toward an overcoming of this sickness that Rosenstock believed that “A higher grammar must reinstate the reality of speaking and listening people in the place of the nightmare of a speechless thinker who computes a speechless universe.” Need one add that this temptation toward speechlessness seems very prevalent today?

Modern philosophy has often slighted the factor of time—an omission which has had enormous and fatal consequences for our economic thinking. Time has been absorbed into space, and as “consumers” we give no thought for future generations nor of the time it took to form the fossil fuels we so insouciantly extract from the earth. Our technological devices have speeded up time to an unimaginable degree. It may be that the recovery or reclamation of time is has become our spiritual need of first order.  By becoming aware of our speaking—of the grammatical “tenses”—we can begin to reclaim this essential part of our humanity. We cannot always afford to await the leisured overview of events, as M.E. Bradford once reminded us. Sometimes we have to act.  And it is this moral duty, this leap from perception to action, which Rosenstock’s Cross of Reality highlights so clearly. As he writes in his book In the Cross of Reality : “ Reality yields only to him who enters real time and real space, and makes his own participation an express presupposition of his thinking.”

Only at the end of the eras of speaking and listening, grammatical exchanges, decisions and delegations, lyrics, epics, histories, and liturgies are we finally confronted with “facts.” And the art of historical life is learning to read those “facts”—not in order to be cowed by them, not as permission to remain passive and uninvolved, but as our calling to new imperatives and battles of the soul. To become aware of our grammatical responsibility, so to speak, is a turn of the road we very much need to make in this era of looming robotics and deterministic genetics. Saving our humanity may depend upon it.

Protecting the NRA’s Freedom of Speech Rights Protects Us All

David Cole

It should be obvious that government officials can’t deploy their regulatory authority to punish an advocacy group because they disagree with its point of view. Yet that is exactly what Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D-NY) and his chief financial regulator, Maria Vullo, set out to do in 2018.

They favored gun control, and therefore disfavored the National Rifle Association. Cuomo and Vullo were of course free to criticize the NRA. But rather than just rely on the persuasive force of their ideas, they deployed the coercive power of their offices to pressure banks and insurance companies to cut ties with the NRA, as alleged.

On May 30, the US Supreme Court in effect confirmed what should have been obvious, unanimously ruling that Vullo’s and Cuomo’s alleged words and actions stated a claim under the First Amendment. In doing so, the court overturned a unanimous decision from the Second Circuit against the NRA. The decision makes no new law, but reaffirms what’s been established since the Supreme Court announced, 60 years ago, that government officials can’t use informal coercion to punish speech they disfavor.

The critical facts alleged in NRA v. Vullo are stark. In February 2018, Vullo, New York’s top financial regulator, with direct oversight of every bank and insurance company in the state, told Lloyd’s, the insurance underwriter, that she’d go easy on unrelated insurance violations if it aided her campaign to weaken the NRA by halting all business with the group. Lloyd’s agreed, and did her bidding.

Six weeks later, Vullo issued formal guidance letters and a press release directing the thousands of banks and insurance companies she oversees to cut their ties with the NRA—not because of any alleged improprieties, but because it “promotes guns.” In the accompanying press release, Cuomo said he directed Vullo to issue the guidance because doing business with the NRA “sends the wrong message.”

This was not about enforcing insurance law; it was about using state power to coerce a boycott of a political group because the state’s highest officials disapproved of its speech. As Cuomo put it in a tweet responding to the NRA’s subsequent lawsuit, “The regulations NY put in place are working. We’re forcing the NRA into financial jeopardy. We won’t stop until we shut them down.”

Had the court accepted Vullo’s argument that this was merely “government speech” and ordinary law enforcement, as the US Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit did, the decision would have provided a playbook for state officials across the country to blacklist whichever groups they disfavor.

That’s why the American Civil Liberties Union agreed to represent the NRA in the Supreme Court. The ACLU disagrees profoundly with the NRA on many issues of law and policy, but we agree that government officials can’t punish advocacy groups simply because they disagree with what they say.

The court’s unanimous decision ensures that officials can’t achieve indirectly what they are barred from achieving directly: punishing speech simply because they disagree with its message. That principle is foundational to a free and democratic society. And the Vullo decision ensures that the First Amendment’s protection extends not just to direct penalties, but to the sorts of end runs that Vullo and Cuomo attempted in targeting the NRA.

The case is NRA v. Vullo , US, No. 22-842, 5/30/24.

The Long-Overlooked Molecule That Will Define a Generation of Science

healthy lifestyle essay speech

By Thomas Cech

Dr. Cech is a biochemist and the author of the forthcoming book “The Catalyst: RNA and the Quest to Unlock Life’s Deepest Secrets,” from which this essay is adapted.

From E=mc² to splitting the atom to the invention of the transistor, the first half of the 20th century was dominated by breakthroughs in physics.

Then, in the early 1950s, biology began to nudge physics out of the scientific spotlight — and when I say “biology,” what I really mean is DNA. The momentous discovery of the DNA double helix in 1953 more or less ushered in a new era in science that culminated in the Human Genome Project, completed in 2003, which decoded all of our DNA into a biological blueprint of humankind.

DNA has received an immense amount of attention. And while the double helix was certainly groundbreaking in its time, the current generation of scientific history will be defined by a different (and, until recently, lesser-known) molecule — one that I believe will play an even bigger role in furthering our understanding of human life: RNA.

You may remember learning about RNA (ribonucleic acid) back in your high school biology class as the messenger that carries information stored in DNA to instruct the formation of proteins. Such messenger RNA, mRNA for short, recently entered the mainstream conversation thanks to the role they played in the Covid-19 vaccines. But RNA is much more than a messenger, as critical as that function may be.

Other types of RNA, called “noncoding” RNAs, are a tiny biological powerhouse that can help to treat and cure deadly diseases, unlock the potential of the human genome and solve one of the most enduring mysteries of science: explaining the origins of all life on our planet.

Though it is a linchpin of every living thing on Earth, RNA was misunderstood and underappreciated for decades — often dismissed as nothing more than a biochemical backup singer, slaving away in obscurity in the shadows of the diva, DNA. I know that firsthand: I was slaving away in obscurity on its behalf.

In the early 1980s, when I was much younger and most of the promise of RNA was still unimagined, I set up my lab at the University of Colorado, Boulder. After two years of false leads and frustration, my research group discovered that the RNA we’d been studying had catalytic power. This means that the RNA could cut and join biochemical bonds all by itself — the sort of activity that had been thought to be the sole purview of protein enzymes. This gave us a tantalizing glimpse at our deepest origins: If RNA could both hold information and orchestrate the assembly of molecules, it was very likely that the first living things to spring out of the primordial ooze were RNA-based organisms.

That breakthrough at my lab — along with independent observations of RNA catalysis by Sidney Altman at Yale — was recognized with a Nobel Prize in 1989. The attention generated by the prize helped lead to an efflorescence of research that continued to expand our idea of what RNA could do.

In recent years, our understanding of RNA has begun to advance even more rapidly. Since 2000, RNA-related breakthroughs have led to 11 Nobel Prizes. In the same period, the number of scientific journal articles and patents generated annually by RNA research has quadrupled. There are more than 400 RNA-based drugs in development, beyond the ones that are already in use. And in 2022 alone, more than $1 billion in private equity funds was invested in biotechnology start-ups to explore frontiers in RNA research.

What’s driving the RNA age is this molecule’s dazzling versatility. Yes, RNA can store genetic information, just like DNA. As a case in point, many of the viruses (from influenza to Ebola to SARS-CoV-2) that plague us don’t bother with DNA at all; their genes are made of RNA, which suits them perfectly well. But storing information is only the first chapter in RNA’s playbook.

Unlike DNA, RNA plays numerous active roles in living cells. It acts as an enzyme, splicing and dicing other RNA molecules or assembling proteins — the stuff of which all life is built — from amino acid building blocks. It keeps stem cells active and forestalls aging by building out the DNA at the ends of our chromosomes.

RNA discoveries have led to new therapies, such as the use of antisense RNA to help treat children afflicted with the devastating disease spinal muscular atrophy. The mRNA vaccines, which saved millions of lives during the Covid pandemic, are being reformulated to attack other diseases, including some cancers . RNA research may also be helping us rewrite the future; the genetic scissors that give CRISPR its breathtaking power to edit genes are guided to their sites of action by RNAs.

Although most scientists now agree on RNA's bright promise, we are still only beginning to unlock its potential. Consider, for instance, that some 75 percent of the human genome consists of dark matter that is copied into RNAs of unknown function. While some researchers have dismissed this dark matter as junk or noise, I expect it will be the source of even more exciting breakthroughs.

We don’t know yet how many of these possibilities will prove true. But if the past 40 years of research have taught me anything, it is never to underestimate this little molecule. The age of RNA is just getting started.

Morning Rundown: Russia may be trying to scare people away from the Olympics, Trump warns of 'breaking point' if he gets jail time, and 30 barrier-breaking LGBTQ leaders

Donald Trump was convicted on felony charges. Will he go to prison?

A New York jury's historic conviction of Donald Trump on felony charges means his fate is now in the hands of the judge he has repeatedly ripped as "corrupt" and "incompetent."

Two experts told NBC News that it's unlikely Trump will be imprisoned based on his age, lack of a criminal record and other factors — and an analysis of thousands of cases found that very few people charged with the same crime receive jail time. But a third expert told NBC News he believes it is "substantially" likely Trump could end up behind bars.

Trump was convicted on 34 counts of falsifying business records , a class E felony that is punishable by a fine, probation or up to four years in prison per count. During the trial, Judge Juan Merchan threatened to put Trump behind bars for violating his gag order, but it’s unclear whether the former president will face similar consequences now. It's expected that any sentence would be imposed concurrently, instead of consecutively.

Former federal prosecutor Chuck Rosenberg, an NBC News analyst, said it's unlikely that Merchan would sentence Trump, 77, to any jail time, given his age and his status as a first-time, nonviolent offender. "I’d be very surprised if there's any sentence of incarceration at all," Rosenberg said. “Of course, he did spend a good bit of time insulting the judge who has the authority to incarcerate him.”

The next step for Trump at this point is his sentencing, which is set for July 11. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg would not comment Thursday on what type of sentence he’d seek, saying his office would do its speaking in court papers in the weeks ahead.

Arthur Aidala, a former prosecutor in the Brooklyn district attorney's office who's now a defense lawyer, said the judge will most likely use some of the time before sentencing to research similar cases to determine what the median sentence is.

"He wants to know before he sentences someone what the typical sentence is," Aidala said, and would consider other factors, like Trump's age and lack of a criminal record, while also taking into account the lack of injury caused by the crime. Aidala said he believes whatever punishment Merchan comes up with would be "a non-jail disposition."

An analysis conducted by Norm Eisen, who worked for House Democrats during Trump’s first impeachment, found that roughly 1 in 10 people who have been convicted of falsifying business records are imprisoned and that those cases typically involved other crimes.

Ron Kuby, a veteran New York criminal defense lawyer, took a different view.

“Judge Merchan is known for being a harsh sentencer when it comes to white-collar crimes committed by people who have wealth and privilege and power,” he said.

Kuby added he believes "it is substantially likely Judge Merchan will sentence Trump to jail or prison time," despite the logistical and practical complications that locking up a person with Secret Service protection would entail.

Kuby said that's because the criminal scheme went on for over a year and included a number of bad acts on Trump's part.

“It’s an entire course of conduct he was involved with — not just one bad decision,” he said.

Trump, however, most likely doesn't have to worry about missing the Republican National Convention, where he's expected to accept the party's nomination, even though it's taking place just days after his sentencing. Kuby said he'd most likely be able to remain free while he appeals the conviction.

Trump's behavior during the trial, including his flouting Merchan's gag order by making comments about witnesses and the jury, isn't likely to be a factor in the sentencing decision, Kuby said. It's also highly unlikely that comments that appeared to be aimed at sidestepping the gag order by Republican officials who attended the trial as Trump's guests will figure into Merchan's reasoning, Kuby added.

"If the judge is smart, he'd stay away from that," Kuby said. "The best way for judges not to get reversed in a sentencing is to stick to the facts and circumstances of the crimes and conviction."

Rosenberg said that despite Trump’s frequent criticisms of Merchan, which he likened to “a batter who’s been yelling at the umpire from before the first pitch,” Merchan appeared to run “a clean and fair trial.”

Rosenberg and Kuby agreed that Trump would appeal the verdict. Kuby said that could delay Trump's serving whatever punishment Merchan doles out for years, even if the appeal is ultimately unsuccessful.

His first appeal will be to the state Appellate Division, a midlevel appeals court, and it will almost certainly not decide the appeal until after the November election, Kuby said. If he loses there, he could then appeal to the state's highest court, the Court of Appeals. A loss there would be followed by a request to the U.S. Supreme Court to hear the case.

If all that fails, Kuby said, he could then try turning to federal court in another attempt to eventually get the case before the Supreme Court.

The appeals process typically takes a long time — Kuby said he had one client who staved off prison time for six years — but there's another potential complicating factor in this case.

"If he becomes president of the United States, he cannot be incarcerated in a state prison" while he's in office, Kuby said, because it could prevent him from fulfilling his constitutional duties. If he lost his appeals, "by the time he leaves office — if he leaves office — he'd be ready to be incarcerated," he said.
