Hunt review: Sudheer Babu’s slowburn thriller is worthy of your time

A remake of the Malayalam hit Mumbai Police, the film works better as a psychological drama than as a thriller

Hunt review: Sudheer Babu’s slowburn thriller is worthy of your time

Arjun Prasad, a cop, while investigating the murder of his colleague Aryan Dev, is injured in an accident and suffers from partial memory loss. He has little clue about his case or his past and is on a quest to understand himself better every passing day. While he gathers the courage and gets back to work, the case takes him back to many dark corners in his life. His counterpart, Mohan Bhargav, stands by his side in the hour of crisis.

Even as the debate around the feasibility of remakes in the OTT era rages on, Hunt, a Telugu remake of a popular Malayalam cop thriller Mumbai Police, tries its luck at the theatres today. Beyond labels like remakes/adaptations, the basic purpose of cinema remains to tell a good story and to entertain - Hunt is successful in that pursuit. It respects your intelligence, boasts of absorbing drama, a taut screenplay and is spearheaded by strong performances.

image_item

Hunt has an additional layer of appeal because its protagonist isn’t only after a killer in a case, he’s on a quest to discover himself after a fatal accident. He has a colourful, partly notorious past and the partial memory loss gives him a chance to start on a clean slate again. It provides him an opportunity for self reflection and it’s not an easy path - he unearths a different piece of the puzzle each day, forcing him to confront his inner demons.

The true victor in Hunt is the nuanced writing and the alluring characterisation. The three pivotal characters have distinct journeys, conflicts and moments to shine. It looks at cops from a humane dimension, delving deep into their professional and personal lives and doesn’t reduce them to heroic caricatures. Keeping its thriller exterior intact, Hunt also makes you to look at the loneliness in a cop’s life, their need for identity at work and companionship too.

The mood of the film is largely morose (could’ve done with more liveliness), the treatment is understated and the mysteries are more internal than external. More than a whodunit, Hunt works as a psychological drama. The screenplay, alternating between the present and the past of Arjun is one of its major strengths. The action choreography is slick and diverse and lends a larger-than-life appeal to the narrative.

The only dance number in Hunt serves as a speedbreaker, but one can’t deny its appeal - Ghibran makes sure that the occasional indulgence doesn’t hurt the film.

The ending isn’t sensationalised and remains true to the spirit of the story. The fact that a mainstream actor Sudheer Babu has trusted Telugu audiences to accept an out-of-the-box story like Hunt indicates that times are changing . The film is focused when it doesn’t turn into an advertisement of his ripped physique.

Sudheer Babu presents the various complexities within Arjun Prasad with an earnestness that’s hard to ignore. Srikanth couldn’t have asked for a better role to suit his persona and age, while Bharath’s comeback is equally impressive. The supporting cast, including Chitra Shukla, Mounika Reddy, Mime Gopi, Kabir Duhan Singh, Goparaju Ramana, Manjula, do justice to their brief roles. Abhijeeth Poondla’s extended appearance could’ve been less hysterical.

Ghibran’s expertise with action thrillers helps Hunt and the makers ensure that the technical appeal of the product isn’t compromised. Director Mahesh Surapaneni doesn’t tinker with the soul of the original and extracts fine contributions from his capable cast, crew. Hunt isn’t your average murder mystery, it takes time to create its ambience and is a compelling package of several complex interpersonal conflicts.

Look at Hunt beyond the label of a remake to recognise its worth. Stories revolving around a character’s psychological quest are a rarity in Telugu cinema and director Mahesh Surapaneni uses this opportunity responsibly, while respecting the source material. Sudheer Babu, Srikanth and Bharath get ample scope to shine in the nuanced thriller-drama with layered characters and a gripping screenplay.

Hunt Review: Fine Point But Mishandled

Hunt Review: Fine Point But Mishandled

Movie: Hunt Rating: 2/5 Banner: Bhavya Creations Cast: Sudheer Babu, Bharath Niwas, Srikanth, Chitra Shukla, Mounika Reddy, Goparaju Ramana and others Music: Ghibran Cinematography: Arul Vincent Editing: Prawin Pudi Producer: V Ananda Prasad Directed by: Mahesh Release Date: Jan 26, 2023

Sudheer Babu has claimed that the action choreography in “Hunt” will stun the audiences. He also said that he made a daring step with this film.

Let’s find out its merits and demerits.

Story: Police officer Aryan Dev (Bharat), a friend and colleague of ACP Arjun Prasad's (Sudheer Babu), is murdered after being shot at while accepting a gallantry award.

While on the phone with his boss Mohan (Srikanth), Arjun Prasad reveals that he has identified the murderer; however, in the very next moment, he is involved in an accident and suffers from selective memory loss.

Arjun Prasad makes a full recovery, but it takes a long time for his memory to return. Even so, his superior Mohan is determined to re-attach the case and identify Aryan Dev's killer.

How successful will Arjun Prasad be in tracking down the murderer a second time?

Artistes’ Performances: Sudheer Babu has previously played police officers, but this one is very different. The twist in his character is the difference, which is a big risk for any actor to take. He accepted the challenge and played the role in his own unique way.

In this film, he does not have a female partner.

Bharat convincingly plays Sudheer Babu's friend. He's a good fit for the part. Srikanth as police chief is fine.

Technical Excellence: The film's technical and production values are satisfactory. While the cinematography is adequate, the background music is ok. The film has only one song, a forgettable item number. Dialogues are neat.

Highlights: Plot Point Sudheer Babu Climax

Drawback: First Half Screenplay Dragging Narration

Analysis "Hunt," starring Sudheer Babu, is a story of a police investigation into a murder, based on the Malayalam film "Mumbai Police." The killer's identity is concealed until the very end, which may come as a surprise to viewers who are not familiar with the original source material.

The film presents itself as a standard investigative thriller, but its climax focuses on a character who denies the existence of his true nature. Nonlinear storytelling and frequent flashbacks help keep viewers guessing about the killer's identity. However, as the story progresses, shocking revelations emerge, and the plot centers around this twist.

Director Mahesh made some changes to the original Malayalam script, and the beginning of the film is engaging. However, the middle portion of the film appears to deviate from the main plot and includes unnecessary elements.

While it is commendable that Sudheer Babu is willing to take on new roles, the audience's reaction may be mixed. The plot twist could have been presented in a more convincing manner.

Overall, "Hunt" is a thriller with a unique premise and an unexpected twist, but it falls short of expectations and a more compelling narrative would have made a difference.

Bottom line: Target Missed

  • Prathinidhi 2 Review: Illogical Plot, Weak Direction

Hunt Review

'Hunt' is the latest film to hit the screens. In this section, we are going to review the movie.

ACP Arjun (Sudheer Babu) is in a fix. He is a memory-loss investigator who has to find out who shot down his friend ACP Aryan (Bharath of 'Premisthe' fame) on the day the latter was being decorated with a medal.

hunt malayalam movie review

As part of the endeavour, Arjun forms a team (compromising cops played by Goparaju Ramana, Mounika Reddy and others). No matter how hard Arjun tries, he fails to crack the code. What is eluding him? Is it impossible to trace down Aryan's assassin?

Analysis:

It is no more a secret that 'Hunt' is a remake of the 2013 Malayalam thriller 'Mumbai Police'. Since director Mahesh Surapaneni was already equipped with a script enriched by an explosive twist, he had it easy. Despite the edge, he fails to make the cut.

hunt malayalam movie review

Barring the action choreography (by Renaud Favero and Brian Wiziar of Hollywood), 'Hunt' doesn't raise the bar. Ghibran's BGM is not over-the-top and that's the only plus. For whatever reason, the score doesn't have an inviting ring. It recedes to the background way too much. Arul Vincent's cinematography is good.

hunt malayalam movie review

This thriller doesn't throw up misguiding elements and that's the only plus. The investigation procedure is not peppered with unnecessary ideas. Even the subplot involving a Jihadist Professor doesn't overstay its welcome.

However, the film fails in multiple other ways. The interval bang is underwhelming. The scenes that follow make the viewer wonder if there is a way out.

hunt malayalam movie review

It has been almost a decade since the Malayalam original was made. Why couldn't 'Hunt' have been different? Why couldn't it have been an adaptation like 'The GodFather' was of 'Lucifer'? Where was the need to keep the friendship beats so underwhelming? The Telugu audience are not used to watching such subdued portrayals of friendship. Unlike Mollywood films, emotions in Telugu movies are not expected to be understated.

Where could the film have been different? There was no need for the character played by Srikanth. As the hero's friend-cum-boss, he is hardly there to add any dramatic dimension. 'Premisthe' Bharath makes an effective comeback; he is here to stay.

hunt malayalam movie review

Now, coming to the twist. It was definitely bold on the part of the makers to transpose a Mollywood twist onto a Telugu movie. This is reminiscent of the conviction exhibited by the makers of the ZEE5 web series 'Gaalivaana', which too had quite a bold twist. The word 'bold' is usually used in all sorts of inappropriate contexts in Telugu pop culture. As such, it has lost its potency. In the case of 'Hunt', though, it can be used deservedly.

hunt malayalam movie review

However, 'Hunt' relies way too much on its twist. It forgets to build a compelling screenplay in the lead-up to the pre-climax phase. The actors mostly go through the motions. Barring Sudheer Babu and Bharath, there is no performance that you can write home about.

hunt malayalam movie review

'Hunt' is a wasted opportunity. Its screenplay lacks interesting ideas and pace. The remake feels like it needs a remake to make us forget the remake.

'Hunt' movie review: A functional remake but a brave attempt

A still from the movie

The purpose of remakes has been a question for years and their utility and value came under severe scrutiny in the recent past after streaming platforms increased the accessibility of films by leaps and bounds. Naturally, a remake of a proven film is certainly not a hot commodity anymore, like it used to be, say, a decade ago. Hunt, the official remake of Mumbai Police, a brave Malayalam film that made people turn their heads in 2013, is hitting screens a decade late but it still remains a daring attempt in the Telugu space.

Hunt is releasing at an interesting but conflicting time. On one hand, there has been a significant inclination towards fresher stories (as long as they are engaging) among the audience, bestowing Hunt a huge advantage. On the other hand, remakes are having a tough time justifying their existence with the audience gradually overcoming the “1-inch-tall barrier”.

hunt malayalam movie review

Many questions pop up: Why did it take 10 years to remake a hit film? Does it mean Telugu cinema is lagging behind Malayalam cinema by 10 years? Hunt can be used as a specimen in this case study to evaluate where Telugu cinema and its audience stand, and answer these questions. Personally, I am finding the peripheral prospects of Hunt and what they indicate more interesting than the actual film, which is a functional and mostly engaging investigative drama by itself.

Thanks to Mumbai Police and Bobby-Sanjay’s screenplay structure that keeps the audience guessing, revealing and holding back just what’s needed, Hunt still manages to be an interesting investigative drama. ACP Arjun Prasad, (Sudheer Babu) meets with an accident minutes after solving the murder case of his colleague and friend Aryan (Bharath Nivas) and wakes up with no memory of his past. His close friend and senior, Mohan (Srikanth) encourage him to retrace the clues and solve the crime again. It is a lip-smacking premise with an equally brilliant screenplay and Mahesh, the director of the remake, adapts Mumbai Police as a mainstream actioner.

hunt malayalam movie review

That’s both a boon and a bane. For instance, a case involving terrorists (Maoists in the original), which triggers a key plot point, is just verbally explained in Malayalam where it is fleshed out as two separate action sequences. Similarly, an entire new thread is derived from this point, just to create a red herring and, of course, spring another action sequence from it.

Some action sequences work better than the rest and honestly, there is a style and method in these sequences that are seldom found in Telugu films. Arjun, for instance, fights more like a trained police officer and less like a Telugu film hero who can make poor fighters fly with a punch. In that sense, one particular sequence set in a dark den shot in long stretches like a video game is superbly choreographed and shot; Arul Vincent’s dynamic cinematography complements Sudheer’s moves. It is perhaps dexterity of some extent in these choices that compensates for the ‘commercialisation’ of the story.

Apart from a special dance number, none of these choices hinder the flow of the film. The film takes its time to get rolling (although the conflict is introduced right in its opening scene) and we start feeling the seriousness of the stakes and the twists only after the halfway mark, after familiarising ourselves with the characters. The way it leads up to the final reveal and how it plays out is perhaps the best part of the film. Sudheer too holds up effectively in these long stretches.

Considering it had an opportunity, I wish Hunt fixed some issues of the original, instead of simply mimicking. For example, more clarity could have been offered on the timeline of events surrounding the reveal and lead-up to Aryan’s death. Likewise, the ‘change’ Aryan goes through in his arc could have been spelled out better in the remake since this remains vague in the original too.

Moreover, I really wish one of the film’s core themes, friendship, was not just reduced to dialogues and was explored further. Featuring a never-before-seen twist ending in Telugu cinema, Hunt is a brave attempt despite being a remake, especially considering it is wrapped in the body of a mainstream action thriller. Although I wish it was a Telugu original, the crude, homophobic remarks passed by the audience on the single screen where I watched the film clearly answer why Telugu cinema won’t try something as ballsy. So I am just glad Hunt took that risk.

Hunt Review:  Sudheer Babu kept choosing some experimental scripts from the start of his career, but somehow failing to entertain audience and unable to reach larger section of audience. After the disaster ‘Aa Ammayi Gurinchi Meeku Cheppali’ he is back with an action drama ‘Hunt’. Hunt released today in theatres on occasion of Republic Day. Let us get into the detailed review of this movie to know if Sudheer Babu is able to get the much needed success with this movie.

Table of Contents

Assistant Commissioner Aryan Dev is murdered and the case is handed over to Arjun Prasad, a very honest police officer. During the investigation Arjun Prasad meets with an accident and forgets the past. In order to solve Aryan Dev’s case Arjun needs to recall what happened that leads to many twists and turns.

Cast & Crew

Hunt movie stars Sudheer Babu in the lead role, while Srikanth Meka, Bharath Niwas, Mime Gopi, Kabir Singh, Ravi Varma played other important roles in the movie. Hunt movie is directed by Mahesh Surapaneni and produced by V Ananda Prasad on Bhavya Creation production banner. Music of this movie is composed by Ghibran and cinematography is handled by Arul Vincent. Prawin Pudi took care of the editing.

Hunt movie looks like an unofficial remake of the Malayalam super hit movie ‘Mumbai Police’ that received many accolades for its making and story telling. Though the trailer of this movie was very well designed, as soon as the movie starts in the theatre, you will understand that most of the scenes are seen elsewhere, if you have already watched ‘Mumbai Police’ in Malayalam.

Though movie looks like an unofficial remake of Mumbai Police movie, director tried to inject few elements that could connect with Telugu audience. Final twist in the movie might be unpredictable to many and might not be appealing to few section of audience as well.

While it comes to acting performances, Sudheer Babu is very good in the role of a cop struggling to recall what happened to him. His efforts in the action scenes are appreciable. Srikanth Meka played very important role in the movies that travels with the lead character most of the time and he did good. Bharat Niwas was okay in the role of Aaryan Dev, he could have been better in few scenes. All other actors did their part as required for the characters.

Technically Hunt movie looks okay. Songs have no importance in the movie, however background score composed by Ghibran creates the required interest in the scenes. Cinematography by Arul Vincent is good for few scenes and could have been much better for few more scenes. Action sequences are well choreographed. Production values are okay.

Director Mahesh Surapaneni tried to present the story that has already been said in other language with some changes made to entertain present day audience. He needs to improve a little more in terms of making the movie.

Overall, Hunt is an action filled entertainer with few unexpected twits and turns that can be watched in theatres.

Trailer of Bhavana's Hunt promises an eerie thriller

Trailer of Bhavana's Hunt promises an eerie thriller

On Sunday, the makers of the upcoming Malayalam film Hunt , starring Bhavana in the lead role, unveiled the film's trailer. Directed by Shaji Kailas, Hunt marks Bhavana's second collaboration with the director after the 2006 thriller Chinthamani Kolacase.

The trailer suggests that the film revolves around the medical industry, with Bhavana portraying the character of a forensic doctor. The trailer creates an atmosphere for a spooky investigative thriller, with eerie music and jump scare shots. With brief one-liners of Bhavana, like " Is the soul real?" " We're doctors; we heal people, not kill." Ranji Panikker says," Parapsychology pseudoscience," hints that the film establishes either a horror element or a psychological thriller

Here is the trailer

Others in the cast include Renji Panikkar, Chandhunath, Dain Davis, Anu Mohan, G Suresh Kumar, Ajmal Ameer, Rahul Madhav, Biju Pappan, Nandhu, and Vijaya Kumar. The technical team has Jackson Johnson as the cinematographer, Ajas Pukkadan as the editor and Kailas Menon as the music director.

Hunt  is produced by K Radhakrishnan under the Jayalakshmi Films banner.

Up until the third act, Aavasavyuham was the best modern Malayalam movie I'd ever seen. The style, narration, humour, execution, lighting, sound design, social and political commentary are all brilliant (special mention for the usage of മൈത്താണ്ടി - തനി തിരോന്തരം ആണ് director). The transitioning between genres of documentary, drama, and magical realism were very smooth. Even without a proper theatre experience I was fully immersed in what the movie had to offer. Krishand's sense of humour is brilliant. The placement of the jokes works really well, and the scientific information which would otherwise be a bleeding bore stays with you. The build-up to the title card was the best in Malayalam film history and nothing comes close. The third act…

It’s difficult to categorise Aavasavyuham. It’s textured like a mockumentary, ecological fantasy, and satire. There are layers that point toward the surreal cohabitation of humans and animals in a world where the ecosystem is gradually decaying, and humans are exploiting the habitat for survival. Aavasavyuham looms over this inconspicuous, quiet but unfathomable and innocent man called Joy.

What makes the narrative engaging is the structuring. So you have crucial characters pitched as subjects of a performative documentary, and they speak about their experiences involving Joy. It takes time to enter this strange world where ecologists talk about the dragonflies, sea turtles, and migratory birds in the backdrop of romance, conflict, and the fishermen’s community on a tiny island in Kochi.…

What a stunning stunning stunning piece of CINEMA. The concept, the narration, the execution, the cinematography, the background music, the cast, the climax... Literally out of words. The most satisfying movie watching experience I had this year hands down.

There is evident and obvious inspiration drawn from The Shape of Water (2017) , Amphibian Man (1961) and Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954), but Krishand manages to make Avaasavyuham more refined in its socio-political messaging and his Frog-man, more profound, real and rooted. He effortlessly blends fantasy horror with realism and juxtaposes elements of absurdity and surrealism in his mockumentary narration technique. Not even once did my attention waver or fall out of place throughout the run-time. I can only imagine how stunning the film would have looked at the theatres. I'm still lingering over the sweet taste the film left me with... I think I don't have enough words for now.. Might write more in detail later.

Itinte presentation is very engaging and fun to watch and at the same time is informative. Oru entertainer padatinte vibe ind oru arthouse padatinte vibe ind. If being more precise itinte making feels like a Karikku video. Comedy hit or miss but is not bad, like edak oke chila banger lines undarnu. One of the most creative films to have come out from Malayalam in recent times!! Yet another unique voice from the indie space. While the mainstream is going through its ups and downs, the independent scene is quietly witnessing a new wave of filmmakers. Filmmakers who are not afraid to experiment with new narrative styles and genres, and filmmakers who make films that are extremely different from the stereotypical "award padam" style. Hoping to see much more of this in the future ❤

Kandirikkam .

The movie achieves to build unique characters and tell its story in a mockumentary way. Also unlike a lot of awarding winning movies, this gives close attention to the technical aspects of a movie.

Is it entertaining? To a certain extent it is…but it’s not something like the office, where the full potential of a mockumentary has been explored.

Padam katha parnayu poovunu ennu alathe, vere entertainment ad cheyan onum shremichittila, which is both a positive and a negative. A lot of things are repeated and sometimes it feels like watching the discovery channel.

Good attempt.

A very well executed movie that leaves you wanting more, the decision to make it like a mocumentary was an one big masterstroke.

A meta reference in the final act where they referred it as "A marriage between Aquaman and a b grade Malayalam movie" was the perfect one liner for this film, but this was no "b grade" film rather it was one of the best film that came out last year.

Loved the thought process behind this; the idea to blend mockumentary and fantastical science fiction, over a hyperlinked, episodic narrative, with a strong subtext of environmentalism. Found myself beam at the ingenuity of it all. Smart. Brilliant. Inventive. We need more storytellers/filmmakers like this.
