This means that most students with a strong academic track record will enjoy access to these advanced online history PhD programs.

What are online PhD programs in history?

In history, a PhD is considered a terminal degree. This means a PhD is the highest degree that history students can earn. Online doctoral history programs can lead to opportunities for professional historical research, consultation for government agencies, professorship in a university history department, and more.

Online PhD in history candidates are typically already working at a high level in their field. Many are already working as history teachers or applying their research skills in supporting roles.

Often, this means that students seeking their PhD degree must balance existing work and personal responsibilities with a challenging course of education. For many graduate students, the online history PhD program makes this balance possible.

About Accredited Online History PhD Programs

The best online PhD in history programs will have proper accreditation. Be sure that your are pursuing your PhD in history through a fully accredited university and program:

  • Institutional Accreditation : Accreditation is vital for online doctoral programs. It signifies that the online PhD programs offered by the online school are in compliance with the standards of a Department of Education-approved accrediting body.

A school must also be accredited in order to offer federal financial aid to its online doctorate candidates. When looking for an online doctoral program, seek out options with accreditation from a colleges and schools commission in your region. This stamp of approval is critical for ensuring the quality and credibility of your online program.

  • Programmatic Accreditation : In addition to institutional accreditation, be sure that you prioritize online doctorate degree programs with programmatic accreditation.

While there is no specifically required programmatic accreditation for the general field of historical research, those who intend to work in post-secondary educational institutions may be required to complete a doctoral program with accreditation from the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). Make sure that you online history program offers the proper programmatic accreditation requirements for your career goals.

  • Carnegie Classification : The Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, or as it is more commonly known, the Carnegie Classification, is a framework for categorizing all accredited, degree-granting institutions in the United States.

Originally formulated in 1970 by The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, and administered through the University of Indiana’s Center for Postsecondary Research since 2014, the Carnegie Classification is “the leading framework for recognizing and describing institutional diversity in U.S. higher education.”

Under this classification, top research universities for doctoral degrees and PhD candidates are identified as either R2: Doctoral Universities for “high research activity” or R1: Doctoral Universities for “very high research activity.” Look for these classifications when considering options for your online PhD programs.

Key Point: Be sure that you only consider online PhD programs with proper accreditation.

Admission Requirements

Each online doctoral in history program has its own admission requirements. However, most online doctoral programs will carry the same basic threshold for admission:

  • A completed online application
  • Official undergraduate college transcripts
  • A cumulative GPA of at least 3.0
  • GRE scores, MAT scores, or GMAT scores
  • Letters of recommendation
  • Personal interviews
  • Personal statement or writing sample
  • Plan of study

Key Point: In most cases, you will be eligible to enter your online PhD in history after earning a bachelor’s degree. However, some specialized online PhD programs may require you to have earned a master’s degree as well.

Curriculum and Courses

As with other advanced degree and graduate programs, research is the central component of your online PhD in history program. This is true for fully online doctorate degrees as well as hybrid degrees combining online education with traditional on-campus courses.

Regardless of whether you complete a traditional, hybrid or online history PhD program, the typical time to completion is five to seven years.

The typical components of your online PhD program may include:

Foundational Courses

Some foundational online doctorate courses may be focused on your specific area of study.

You may be able to choose a concentration in an area such as:

  • American history
  • World history
  • European history
  • African history
  • Latin American history
  • Political science
  • Ancient history

In addition to your core concentration courses, additional courses will focus on honing research skills and practicing experimental design. You may be able to complete many of these requirements through online classes.

Examinations for PhD Candidacy

Many online doctoral candidates are required to complete certain examinations to enter into online PhD candidacy. This will typically occur after you’ve completed one to two years of foundational courses.

Dissertation

In most cases, the central component of your online PhD program will be the completion of your dissertation. After gaining status as an online PhD in history candidate, you will typically work closely with a professorial advisor or mentor to develop an original research question.

This research question will form the basis of your dissertation—an ongoing project designed to address this research question through applied research. While you will work closely with your advisor or mentor, much of your dissertation will be rooted in independent research. This is especially true for students pursuing their PhD in history online.

Oral Defense

Upon completion of the written portion of your dissertation—which will typically present the findings from your original research project—you will be expected to defend your findings. This “oral defense” will typically be conducted by a commission of professors and experts in your field. PhD candidates in some online degree programs may be able to conduct this defense via teleconferencing.

Teaching Requirements

Some online PhD in history programs will also include a teaching component, which will require you to work as an adjunct professor or teacher’s assistant in an undergraduate or graduate school. It may be possible for students in the online doctoral degree program to also serve teaching requirements by instructing students through an online program.

Key Point: The online history PhD is a research-focused degree. Your dissertation will be a central part of your online PhD program.

What’s the difference between online doctoral programs and online PhD programs?

Technically, a PhD program is a type of doctorate degree program. This means that all online PhD candidates are doctoral students. By contrast, not all doctoral students are PhD candidates.

The primary distinction is that doctoral students are primarily focused on putting existing theories into practice. Depending on your chosen field, your online doctoral degree may require participation in an educational leadership program, engagement in clinical practice, work as a resident in a nursing program, and much more.

By contrast, online PhD students are focused on creating new knowledge in their area of study. This usually means that online PhD candidates are focused on introducing new theories, creating research projects around these theories, and presenting new findings that demonstrate a mastery of existing knowledge and the insight to introduce new ideas into the field.

Today, more working professionals than ever before are pursuing both online doctoral degrees and online PhD programs.

Factors to consider include program reputation, faculty expertise, research opportunities, and cost. Fortunately, there are resources available to help students navigate the options and find the best program for their needs. This article will explore some of the top online history doctorate degree programs and provide information on what sets them apart.

Methodology

When compiling a list of the best online history doctorate degree programs, several factors were taken into consideration. The following methodology was used to determine the programs that made the final cut:

Accreditation

First and foremost, the programs had to be accredited by a recognized accrediting body. Accreditation ensures that the program meets certain standards of quality and rigor.

Program Reputation

The reputation of the program was also taken into consideration. This includes factors such as the program’s history, faculty, and alumni. Programs with a strong reputation are more likely to provide students with a quality education and better job prospects after graduation.

The curriculum of the program was also examined. A good history doctorate program should provide students with a broad understanding of history as well as the opportunity to specialize in a particular area of interest. The curriculum should be challenging and rigorous, but also flexible enough to meet the needs of individual students.

The faculty of the program was also taken into consideration. A good history doctorate program should have a strong faculty with expertise in a wide range of historical periods and topics. Faculty members should be actively engaged in research and scholarship, and should be accessible to students.

Student Support

Finally, the level of support provided to students was also taken into consideration. A good history doctorate program should provide students with the support they need to succeed, including access to academic advisors, research resources, and career services.

The Graduate Program

Columbia has been one of the most important centers of graduate education in history since modern Ph.D. programs began in America over a century ago. Recipients of our degrees hold distinguished positions in virtually every major university in the United States, and in many abroad. Our program offers a broad education in most areas of historical scholarship and attempts to train students for a discipline and a profession in the midst of considerable change. That includes not simply assisting students in acquiring the knowledge and skills essential to becoming contributing scholars, but also helping them to become effective teachers and to exist comfortably within a demanding and complicated professional world.

The members of our faculty represent many different approaches to the study of the past, and we strive to attract students of similarly diverse interests and commitments. No one should feel that being at Columbia requires accepting any one approach to the study of history.

This part of our website is designed to provide both prospective and current students with answers to some of the many questions they may have about the department.

Admissions answers commonly-asked questions about our admissions process.

Under Ph.D. Fields you will find information about the separate fields of study available in our program and the relationship among them.

Fellowships and Financial Aid explains the various ways we provide our students with fellowships and financial aid.

Dissertations-in-Progress summarizes the course of study towards the Ph.D and highlights the work of our students.

Research awards and recent honors are showcased in Award Announcements .

The section entitled Placement sketches how we prepare our students for the academic job market and reports on how our students have done in that market in recent years.

In the Graduate Handbook , we explain our curriculum and our academic requirements and provide more detailed information about aspects of the program such as the MA, Orals, M.Phil., Dissertations, etc.

Our FAQs are useful for students seeking admission as well as for current students seeking quick information.

The Annual Newsletter keeps us informed about our students.

The PhD by Distance mode is available to all applicants for eligible HCA PhD programmes, who will apply via the Postgraduate Degree Finder . Applicants will select between on-campus and distance options, as well as between part-time and full-time options.

PhD by Distance students will receive the same level of support and supervision as on-campus students. The frequency with which students will meet with their supervisors, and method of communication for supervision sessions, will be provisionally agreed at the point of application and confirmed during induction.

Applicants should provide information about previous experience of distance study together with a statement detailing the potential risks and characteristics of distance learning. It is important that student’s applying for this mode of study recognise its particular challenges. While experience of studying at a distance is desirable in applying for the programme, this is not a specific requirement for admission. All of this should be discussed with the potential supervisor(s) prior to application and can be reflected on further during the admissions interview.

Applicants should also use this additional application form to provide details of the access they will have to research facilities at the normal site of study and where the core datasets that they will rely on are located.

Working whilst studying

The School understands that many students will take on paid work alongside their studies. The University’s guidance for full-time PhD students is that they should work no more than an average of 9 hours per week for across the academic year, to ensure they have time for their studies . While there are no specific rules about how many hours part-time students can work, the School recommends that part-time students allocate at least two to three days a week, on average across the year, to their PhD research. You should discuss any working patterns that you have with your proposed supervisor and reflect on the time you are devoting to your studies throughout your programme, particularly if you are struggling to make sufficient progress; this might well be a topic for discussion at annual reviews. Please note that if you need to apply for an extension at the end of your programme, you cannot use the fact that you had a job alongside your studies as a justification for this – an extension request can only be based on unforeseen circumstances. If you need to take on more work for a temporary period of time and this will impact on your studies, you should consider an Authorised Interruption of Studies.

Fields of Study –  General Course and Credit Requirements

The Qualifying Examination and Dissertation Prospectus – Stages of the Program

Fields of Study

The University of Florida offers a wide range of resources for history graduate students in diverse fields and subfields of study . PhD students indicate their major field interest or may indicate their preference for a dual major when they apply to the program.

The Major Field

Almost all doctoral students are grouped into one of the following broad geographic fields taking coursework and preparing for examinations within that field. Within these broad geographic and chronological divisions, students develop concentrations and/or focused examination reading lists in consultation with their advisors. In addition to the overarching curricular rules which apply to all doctoral students, these geographic sections have their own rules and guidelines. The pages linked below explain the specific requirements for doctoral students working within each geographic section:

  • Africa (AFH)
  • Europe (EUH)
  • Latin America (LAH)
  • United States (AMH)

The Dual Major

Students who opt for the dual major declare two major fields taking at least 12 credit hours in one field and at least 12 credit hours in a second. Students who pursue the dual major option will not do a departmental minor field.

Students who declare a dual major field will be allowed to create their major fields in one of three ways:

Option 1: by creating a dual major from parts of two major fields (for example, a student interested in European colonialism could declare a major field in African History  and another in Modern Europe ), or

Option 2: by combining parts of one major field (such as the Spanish American Track from Latin American History ) with an expanded version of a thematic minor field like Gender , Legal History , or Atlantic World , or

Option 3: by expanding and combining two thematic minor fields  (for example, by having a dual major that is made of fields in Gender and in Atlantic World history).

Note : Students who have taken their field exams prior to Fall 2013 may not shift to a dual major.

Students interested in a dual major at the time of admis s ion are encouraged to indicate the two areas of study they wish to combine during their time in the program and should list faculty with whom they hope to work in their applications.  The files of those students who indicate an interest in a dual major will be reviewed by faculty who teach in the relevant areas, and should be endorsed by at least one faculty member from each area. Students who wish to do a dual major after admission to the program should petition the graduate coordinator for permission to pursue the dual major option.  The petition should include:

  • An indication of the two areas of study making up the dual major (this summary should end with an explanation of why the two fields fit together),
  • a list of courses taken (or proposed) to fulfill the credit requirements, and
  • the endorsement of two members of the faculty, one from each of the student’s proposed major fields. With this endorsement, the faculty members agree they will work together with the student toward completion of the two fields.

In the case of students already in the program who are petitioning to be allowed to do a dual major, the petition must be reviewed and approved by the graduate committee.

The Minor Field

Unless they opt for the dual major, all doctoral students must also develop a  minor field .  In Qualifying Examinations students are examined on both their major and minor fields. The History Department allows students to tailor Minor Fields to their own particular needs or interests and/or to complement their dissertation research. (All minor fields require at least 9 credits of relevant course work.) Many students will opt to construct a minor field within one of the broad geographic areas . Others may develop a thematic minor field that crosses geographic or chronological boundaries and draws from cross-sectional clusters of strength within the department. Thematic fields include but need not be limited to the following areas, some of which have their own gateway courses or special requirements:

  • Atlantic World
  • Gender History
  • Legal History
  • Religious History
  • World History

For other possibilities based on areas of strength in our department, see our list of faculty specializations and subfields .  You may also visit the field pages for each major, or contact specific faculty members for more information on minor fields.

General Course and Credit Requirements

A student registered for 9-12 credits per term is considered a full-time student. A typical graduate seminar is 3 credits, and most doctoral students enroll in 3 courses per semester including reading courses, research seminars, trailers, and language courses. For a description of the types of graduate courses offered, see the Graduate Handbook (the most recent edition is here ). See also the relevant major field page for a description of the specific seminar and language requirements pertinent to that field.

All history doctoral students, regardless of their major or minor field, must take two required seminars:

1) HIS 6061, Introduction to Historiography, which is taught every year on a rotating basis by different members of the department, in their first year; and

All doctoral students must also take 6 credits of course work outside the history department.

The Qualifying Examination and Dissertation Prospectus

All doctoral students must pass a set of examinations before being admitted to candidacy. These examinations are taken at the end of a student’s formal course work and before full-fledged work on the dissertation begins. Students are examined in both their major and minor fields of study, and the exams include both a written and an oral component. In addition, students must present a dissertation prospectus to their supervisory committee. The oral defense of the prospectus is either combined with the oral portion of the qualifying examination or must be completed within four months of the oral examination. After passing the qualifying exam and prospectus defense, the student is formally admitted into “candidacy” and begins the stage known in the profession as A.B.D., “all but dissertation.”

Stages of the Program

Although there are variations depending on students’ fields of concentration and preparation before beginning their graduate studies at UF (e.g., BA or MA), typically students progress through the doctoral program in three distinct stages:

Years One and Two: Required coursework (including languages).

Year Three: Candidacy (the qualifying examination and prospectus defense)

Year Four to Completion: Research, writing, and defense of the dissertation

Loyola University Chicago

Department of history, phd in history.

The doctoral program in history is a 60-hour in-person program that culminates in a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree. Students can enter the program in two ways:

  • (1) Most students enter holding a Master's degree . Usually, the PhD degree is a 30-hour program beyond the MA, but the exact hourly requirement beyond the MA will be determined by the Graduate Program Director and the Graduate School.
  • (2) Students who have compiled an outstanding record in an undergraduate history major may enter the PhD Program directly from their undergraduate program. Admission with a Bachelor's degree only is highly selective and limited to a few undergraduates each year. Students are chosen on the basis of our regular criteria (GPA, letters of recommendation, writing sample and personal statement).

Program Outcomes

Upon completion of the PhD in History, graduates will be able to:

  • Use the historical method to solve historical and historiographical problems while applying the perspectives of class, race, gender, etc. to historical events and trends;
  • Identify and criticize interpretive paradigms and methodologies relevant to historical scholarship and the historical profession;
  • Perform historical research in archives and libraries and evaluate the provenance, context, validity, and biases of these sources from the past;
  • Apply the necessary research skills to produce original scholarship on a chosen historical topic using primary sources while evaluating the validity, context, and biases of secondary source literature produced by other scholars;
  • Demonstrate the ability to deploy multiple forms of communication (written, oral, and new media) to discuss their own historical scholarship and graduate-level knowledge of their chosen fields;
  • Advance the knowledge of the discipline;
  • Conduct cutting edge research;
  • Engage respectfully in debates about the nature of the past in order to enrich historical understanding and generate new questions and investigatory avenues.

General Degree Requirements

For PhD students entering with a Master’s degree, the distribution of hours is as follows if a total of 30 hours pursued at the MA institution is accepted for transfer credit:

For students entering with a Bachelor’s degree , the distribution of hours is as follows:

 * Note: the second 500-level research seminar may be completed within a minor field.

Required or Core Courses

Students who have not taken History 400: Twentieth Century Approaches to History or an equivalent course at the Master's level must do so in the PhD program. Additionally, all doctoral students must take History 403: The Professional Lives of Historians during their first semester in the program. They must also successfully complete at least one 500-level research seminar in the major field. Students accepted into the PhD program  with only a BA degree must complete History 400 and two 500-level research seminars (one in the major field and the second in either the major or minor fields). All students must take History 598 in which they develop their dissertation proposal under the supervision of their major field advisor.

Major Field

Students choose coursework and specific research to develop a broad major within the field of United States history.

Minor Field(s)

In consultation with their major advisor, students coming in with a M.A. will select one minor field in which they must complete at least three courses. This field must be distinct from the major field and from fields taken at the Master's level. Students entering with a B.A.  must complete two minor fields. Minor fields include areas of geographic or topical foci such as:

  • Gender and Women's History
  • Modern Europe
  • Public History
  • United States

Other thematic minor fields (such as race and ethnicity or colonialism and empire) may be created with the approval of the Graduate Program Director. Students may also select a minor field from another discipline with the approval of the Graduate Program Director. Students wishing to pursue a minor field in public history must meet with the Public History Program Director, formally declare public history as their minor field and indicate their plans for fulfilling the minor.

All content courses must be at the 400 and 500 level. Students ordinarily can take no more than three directed study courses (HIST 499).

To view a course catalogue, click on one of the following links:

  • Current and Recent Course Descriptions and Schedules
  • Regularly Scheduled Courses

Research Tool Requirements

United States History Track: Students who choose US history as their major field must complete two research tool requirements:

  • One tool must be within public history and may include History 483: Oral History or History 479: Public History Media. When taken for the research tool requirement, History 483 and History 479 cannot be counted toward the minor field in Public History. In special circumstances, students may petition the Graduate Program Director to substitute another research tool in place of the public history research tool requirement.
  • The second research tool requirement may be fulfilled in two ways: a) reading knowledge of a foreign language appropriate to the student’s major field or b) mastery of a special skill required by the student’s doctoral research. With the approval of the Graduate Program Director, students may demonstrate mastery in one of the following areas: statistics, computer science, GIS, and paleography. Courses taken in these subject areas at Loyola or another academic institution may be used to show mastery of a special skill. However, these courses require prior approval by the Graduate Program Director.

Comprehensive Examinations

Near the end of their graduate program, PhD students must pass a take-home written examination and a two-hour oral examination in their major field . For the written examination, the student will produce three 10–15 page historiographical essays based on a reading list developed in conjunction with a three-member committee of history faculty of their choosing. The committee should be established no later than the beginning of the semester in which the student intends to take the examination. Students will have two weeks to complete the exam, which will be evaluated by the committee. The two-hour oral exam will occur within two weeks of completing the written exam.

For the PhD major field examination in US history , students should choose two of the three designated chronological areas:

  • 19th Century America
  • 20th Century America

They should also choose two thematic areas for the examination. Thematic areas include:

  • Women and Gender
  • Indigenous America
  • African-American and Race
  • American West and Borderlands
  • Immigration and Ethnicity
  • Environmental

Other thematic fields are possible with the approval of all committee members.

In addition, students satisfy the minor field examination requirements by passing a take-home written examination in which they will produce two 10–15 page historiographical essays based on a reading list developed in conjunction with a two-member committee of history faculty of their choosing. The committee should be established no later than the beginning of the semester in which the student intends to take the examination. Students will have one week to complete the exam, which will be evaluated by the committee. Those who select a minor field outside of history must successfully pass a comprehensive examination in that discipline. Students in the Accelerated PhD Program take only one minor field exam. The other minor field requirement is satisfied by the successful completion of three courses (nine credit hours) with at least a B (3.0) average.

For the PhD major and minor field examinations in areas outside of US history (such as modern Europe and other thematic fields with a Transnational Urban focus), students should work closely with their committee members to create reading lists with a broad chronological sweep and a set number of thematic areas.

Dissertation Proposal Review and Dissertation

Students will develop a "dissertation field" within the major field in which they intend to write their PhD dissertation. This field must be designated before 18 credit hours of coursework beyond the MA (normally at the end of the first year in the doctoral program). At this point, students present a dissertation topic and proposal to their major adviser (History 598 Dissertation Proposal Seminar) for review and approval. Students formalize their proposed committee with the submission of the recommendation of the Dissertation Proposal Committee form to the Graduate School.

Following the successful completion of doctoral examinations and the portfolio requirement, students will make a public presentation of their dissertation proposal to a committee, which will include the dissertation director and at least two other faculty members acquainted with the research areas of the dissertation. In discussing the proposal, students and members of the dissertation committee should work out problems and address questions the committee members may have. Upon successfully completing the dissertation proposal review, students submit a formal dissertation outline to the Graduate School. Following its approval and the successful completion of all other degree requirements, students are admitted to PhD candidacy.

Oral Defense

The PhD dissertation must be completed, approved by the designated committee members and successfully defended orally at a public defense.

She Just Earned Her Doctorate at 17. Now, She’ll Go to the Prom.

Dorothy Jean Tillman II of Chicago made history as the youngest person to earn a doctoral degree in integrated behavioral health at Arizona State University.

By Alexandra E. Petri

When Dorothy Jean Tillman II successfully defended her dissertation in November 2023 to earn her doctoral degree from Arizona State University, she couldn’t wait to share the news with her best friend.

“It was a surreal moment,” Ms. Tillman said, “because it was crazy I was doing it in the first place.”

Ms. Tillman, at only 17, became the youngest person to earn a doctoral degree in integrated behavioral health from Arizona State’s College of Health Solutions, all before she was eligible to vote. Earlier this month, Ms. Tillman, now 18, took part in Arizona State’s commencement ceremony and delivered remarks as the outstanding 2024 graduate at the College of Health Solution’s convocation.

Lesley Manson, program director for the doctorate of behavioral health at Arizona State and Ms. Tillman’s doctoral chair, said Ms. Tillman displayed extraordinary perseverance, hard work and dedication for her young age, tackling every challenge head-on.

“She can serve as a real role model,” Ms. Manson said.

Ms. Tillman, called DJ by her family and friends, was an early bloomer. She grew up in Chicago and was home-schooled from a young age, first in a group setting through online classes, and then by her mother, Jimalita Tillman, a single parent with a background in community theater.

Ms. Tillman was part of a gifted program before transitioning to home-schooling. Jimalita Tillman continued her daughter on an accelerated track: By the time she was 8, she was taking high school classes. While most 9-year-olds were learning math and reading, Ms. Tillman was starting college online.

At the time, they lived with Jimalita Tillman’s mother, Dorothy Wright Tillman, a civil rights activist who worked alongside the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and was a Chicago alderman. Ms. Tillman is her grandmother’s namesake (hence the II at the end of Ms. Tillman’s name).

During her early college days, Ms. Tillman’s classroom was often a Starbucks in Chicago, and her days began as soon it opened, she said. Her go-to order was an iced peach green tea with lemonade.

“Around the time when kids went to lunch, we’d be closing the computer,” said Ms. Tillman, who said her discipline and focus come from her grandmother.

Because of her age, Ms. Tillman lived at home while pursuing her higher education, and most of her coursework was online — a challenge for a self-described social butterfly. “I do love meeting new people and talking to people and understanding them and how their brains work,” she said. She found other ways to stay connected with friends through after-school activities.

At 10, she earned her associate degree in psychology at the College of Lake County in Illinois. At 12, she received her Bachelor of Science in humanities at Excelsior College in New York, and at 14, she earned a Master of Science from Unity College in Maine. She chose those fields because they can help scientists “understand why people treat the environment the way they do,” she told Time for Kids in a July 2020 interview.

Ellen Winner, a professor of psychology at Boston College and the author of “Gifted Children: Myths and Realities,” said that children like Ms. Tillman have a motivational intensity she calls a “rage to master.”

“One of the reasons they push themselves is they have a high, innate ability of some kind, and so learning, in whatever they are gifted in, comes easily to them and it’s very pleasurable,” she said. Schools are often not equipped for such gifted children, she added, which may lead parents to home-school their children. The trade-off, she and some experts say, is missing out on socialization and learning with children their age.

“There’s no perfect solution to kids like this,” Ms. Winner said.

Jimalita Tillman said she was sure her daughter was finished with higher education after earning her master’s degree. Ms. Tillman had just launched an organization to support Black youth in Chicago interested in STEM and the arts called the Dorothy Jeanius STEAM Leadership Institute. It was 2020, just after the beginning of the pandemic.

She was surprised when her daughter said she wanted to pursue her doctorate, and even tried to dissuade Ms. Tillman. But Ms. Tillman wanted to help young people with their mental health. She told her mother to trust her.

“I had to follow her lead,” Jimalita Tillman, 42, said.

Ms. Tillman was accepted into the management concentration at Arizona State’s College of Health Solutions, an online doctorate program. Her thesis on developing programs to reduce the stigma for college students seeking mental health services was based on a study she conducted for an in-person internship at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. Ms. Tillman hopes her story resonates with girls who are talkative, outgoing “out-there kind of girls who are trying to figure themselves out but are very smart.”

“I want them to see someone who has taken that energy, sparkle and excitement and packaged it in a way that is classy and beautiful,” she said.

Ms. Tillman may now have her doctorate, but she’s also excited about teenage things — like attending a prom. On Saturday, she going as her best friend’s date to his senior dance. They’re taking an Escalade outfitted with stars on the ceiling, she said, a feature she requested and that her mother made happen.

Ms. Tillman has been focused on school and her professional pursuits, and she plans to host her institute’s summer camp again. Then, she said, she plans to take a beat and have a “fun teenage summer,” doing things she loves, discovering new hobbies and figuring herself out in the process.

“I want to focus on who I am,” she said.

Clarence sasser: the medic who ran through enemy fire and disregarded his own injuries to save his comrades.

The Vietnam War was a decades-long conflict that saw millions of Americans shipped overseas to fight the Communist forces. Of those who served, over 200 were awarded the Medal of Honor, including Clarence Sasser, a US Army medic who braved intense enemy fire to render aid to his injured comrades during an ambush. Completely disregarding his own safety – and while suffering life-threatening wounds – he exemplified true bravery in the face of death and danger.

Clarence Sasser was drafted into the US Army

Clarence Sasser was born on September 12, 1947, in Chenango, Texas. Growing up Rosharon with his mother, step-father, sister, brother and four step-siblings, he was among the last students to sit in a segregated class at Marshall High School, where he was an excellent student and played football.

Following his graduation in 1966, Sasser briefly attended the University of Houston, but was forced to drop down to part-time, due to the costs. This affected his ability to defer his drafting into the US military and, in June 1967, he enlisted in the Army .

After training as a medical aid man , Sasser was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3rd Battalion, 60th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division. He knew he’d soon be shipped overseas, with his arrival in Vietnam occurring in September of that year.

Braving heavy enemy fire along the Mekong River Delta

On the morning of January 10, 1968, Clarence Sasser was one of 115 American soldiers tasked with conducting reconnaissance along the Mekong River Delta, in Định Tường province, South Vietnam. Serving with Company A, 3rd Battalion, 60th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, he and his comrades were landing their helicopters when the area became engulfed in enemy fire. Viet Cong guerrillas were attacking from three sides, with 30 casualties sustained within just the first few minutes.

Despite suffering an injury to his leg, Sasser’s training as a medic prompted him to run across a rice paddy, toward the men who’d been wounded. After safely moving one soldier, the private first class suffered additional injuries when a rocket exploded nearby. He later said of the event, “Shell fragments are something. I’ll never forget how they feel. The pain sets in later. The initial shock is what you experience, and the searing – shell fragments are hot.”

Refusing medical attention, Sasser continued to brave heavy fire as he rendered aid to more of the wounded. Even after losing the use of his legs to injury and suffering from blood loss, he dragged himself 100 meters through the muddy rice paddy to reach more of the injured, urging them to crawl another 200 meters to safety. He then spent the next five hours caring for their wounds.

Sasser and his comrades were later evacuated from the scene by helicopter. He later credited the close air support from the US Air Force with ensuring they all didn’t end up losing their lives.

Clarence Sasser received the Medal of Honor

Clarence Sasser was treated at a hospital immediately following the engagement, after which he was sent to Japan to undergo additional treatment. While there, he began helping out at the dispensary, where he remained until his tour of duty was done.

On March 7, 1969, at a ceremony at the White House , Sasser was presented with the Medal of Honor by US President Richard Nixon . Two others – US Army Staff Sgt. Joe Hooper and Sfc. Fred Zabitosky – also received the distinction. Despite what many said, the medic didn’t believe he had gone above and beyond during the fight with the Viet Cong. Instead, he felt he had simply done his job.

“I don’t think what I did was above and beyond,” he later said. “I never have, and for a long time I had a problem with that. But finally … a friend helped me reconcile it to the point that it meant, ‘Hey, you did your job.'”

He added , “I believed firmly that my job was to care for the guys. I didn’t think that picking up a weapon would help [us]. My job was to treat ’em – to at least let ’em know that doc was around, and would come see if they called.”

Return to civilian life

Following his discharge from the US Army in June 1969, Clarence Sasser restarted his post-secondary studies in chemistry, with Texas A&M University offering him a scholarship. While attending school, he married Ethel Morant, with whom he’d have three children: Billy, Ross and Benjamin.

Sasser never wound up completing his studies at Texas A&M, as he soon found work at a petrochemical oil refinery. After working there for five years, he transitioned into a role within the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), stationed out of Houston.

On May 13, 2024, in Sugar Land, Texas, Sasser passed away, having been predeceased by his wife in 1996. He was 76 years old.

CAMPUS NEWS: MAY 21, 2024

Transfer student success, uno-delgado partnership to enhance transfer student success in biology.

The University of New Orleans has received a more than $550,000 grant from the Louisiana Board of Regents to create an academic pilot program in biology that eases the transition from Delgado Community College to UNO.

The University of New Orleans has been awarded a $553,000 grant from the Louisiana Board of Regents to create a pilot program in biology that would help ease the process for students transferring to UNO from Delgado Community College.

A recent student found that 80% of students entering community college indicated they want to earn a bachelor's degree or higher. However, only 32% of community college students actually transferred to a four-year institution within six years, said Jack Horne, UNO biological sciences professor and the principal investigator on the grant.

“One of the main reasons community college students do not finish their degrees is due to a loss of credits after transfer,” Horne said. “Thus, it is important to identify programs and mechanisms that facilitate this transfer pathway.”

The existing partnership between Delgado and UNO provides an ideal test case for enhancing the transfer pathway, said Horne. In addition, Delgado has the largest enrollment of Louisiana community colleges, and historically, UNO is the number one transfer destination for Delgado students.

“This proposal aims to build a program that minimizes credit loss and increases the number of transfer students in biology as a test case, and to assess each aspect of the program as a means to determine best practices to be applied across all majors to maximize the impact,” Horne said.

Horne, along with co-principal investigators Wendy Schluchter, UNO professor and chair of biological sciences, and Amanda Rosenzweig, assistant dean of Delgado’s STEM school, will collaborate to enhance and develop a student-focused, program-specific pathways for transfer students that begin with the associate degree, and prevent the loss of credits in the transfer process.

It will be a three-prong approach, Horne said. Researchers will develop student-focused advising materials that ensure students fulfill their UNO general education requirements while earning their associate degree, and provide a plan for them to complete the science requirements necessary to prepare them for the bachelor’s degree in biological sciences at UNO. A significant part of this goal is to build an online virtual transfer portal that will be developed in collaboration with Vassil Roussev, computer science professor and director of UNO’s Cyber Center. Roussev is also a member of the grant team. Advisers and faculty from both institutions will be a part of this process and will organize the training and distribution to the advising staff, Horne said.

The second specific aim will be to implement programs to improve student success, Horne said. A working group consisting of biology faculty from both campuses will align introductory biology course work, including a significant technological enhancement.

Finally, a transfer student peer-mentoring program will be established at UNO where more senior Delgado transfer students serve as peer mentors for incoming transfer students, Horne said.

The “History Exchange” podcast series marks a new digital chapter for UNO’s longstanding partnership with the Austrian university.
