Academic Presentation of the Program

Public Health is often studied from a national-central perspective. Few programs are truly international in scope so as to fully prepare graduates for global civil service careers that will engage a wide variety of global health challenges, including malaria, HIV, drug-resistance, diet-related diseases, etc.

To answer this challenge, EUCLID has designed a world-class doctoral curriculum, which is presented here with full documentation of syllabus and faculty resources, as well as total tuition. This documentation will enable potential students to determine if this program is suitable and aligned with their career objectives.

Global Health Conference

AUDIENCE | INTEREST GROUPS

This unique PhD program focuses on the  practical and policy aspects of global public health rather than the advancement of purely theoretical knowledge.

This doctoral program was primarily designed to serve civil servants of EUCLID’s Participating States, but it is also open to the general public as an excellent route to pursue a career within inter-governmental bodies, NGOs and the public sector.

Thanks to its low tuition and institutional relationships, and because it covers such topics as health systems strengthening, malaria and tropical diseases in-depth, it is expected to be of special interest to Global South/African students.

Programme Aims & Structure

The PhD in Global Health (formerly INDIGO) programme aims to provide promising early career researchers with a world-class experience and scholarship. A four-year, full-time programme with a flexible structure, the PhD Global Health aims to produce leaders in global health research, policy, and practice. Typical for our doctoral candidates is to spend a considerable portion of their doctoral degree conducting research as part of ongoing global health and global mental health projects, in collaboration with one of our many national and international partners . Students who successfully complete their PhD will receive either a PhD Psychology or PhD Public Health and Primary Care, dependent on their supervisor.

The following outlines the major milestones of the PhD process, the timing of which may vary depending on the individual candidate and their respective research requirements:

In addition to their own research obligations, doctoral researchers are expected to attend and participate in the TCGH's weekly research seminars, held every Tuesday during lunch time.

By the end of their doctoral training, students gain first-hand knowledge and experience of conducting practical research in one or more of the following principal research areas : (1) Global Mental Health; (2) Health Systems Strengthening; (3) Human Resources for Health, and (4) Equitable Access to Inclusive Health.

By working closely with their supervisors, mentor panels, TCGH partners, and fellow doctoral researchers, our PhD students emerge from the programme confident in their ability to independently design and conduct global health research. Students also have the opportunity to avail of career development opportunities by getting involved with the following TCGH activities:

  • Research grant writing and submission to funding bodies
  • Academic writing and publication
  • Critical thinking and conceptual framing of international development work
  • Conducting research in resource-constrained settings and/or with vulnerable populations
  • Post-graduate teaching and co-supervision through engagement with BA or MSc programmes

We are currently reviewing applications for doctoral theses that are related to the following research topics:

  • Global Health ( Supervisor: Dr Felicity Daly ) - Supervisor for PhD Public Health and Primary Care
  • Child and adolescent mental health and wellbeing; resilience; randomised controlled trials; parent-child relations; refugee youth and families; climate change ( Supervisor: Dr Kristin Hadfield ) - Supervisor for PhD Psychology
  • Global mental health; social determinants of mental health; sexual reproductive health and rights, LGBTQIA+ health and mental health, gender-based violence, ( Supervisor  Dr Meg Ryan ) -  Supervisor for PhDs in Psychology or Public Health and Primary Care
  • Global mental health; global health and international development; psychological responses to trauma; human resources for health and task-sharing models of health service delivery; health system strengthening, ( Supervisor:   Dr Frédérique Vallières ) - Supervisor for PhD Psychology

Please note that, unless otherwise indicated, there is currently no funding available for PhD posts, so candidates must be self-funded or have secured their own bursaries. That said, the opportunity to apply for a Trinity Postgraduate Research Award is available to those who have secured a place on the programme. When reaching out to potential supervisors, please provide information on whether you have secured funding for your tuition fees and stipend and, if not, what funding you would intend to apply for in order to support yourself while conducting the PhD. Note also that proposed PhD projects should be consistent with the funding available; if you have not already secured funding to support conducting the research itself, your research proposal should be for a research project which could be conducted at no or relatively low cost.

Do I get to select my supervisor, or will I be assigned one? Potential students are encouraged to apply todo a PhD in the Trinity Centre for Global Health having identified a member of staff within Trinity College Dublin that has agreed to supervise their work. Supervisors should have expertise in the area of research of interest to the candidate, as well as the availability to take on additional PhD students. You will not be assigned a supervisor.

Do I have to teach or supervise other students while enrolled in the PhD Global Health? There are a number of opportunities for doctoral researchers to both teach and co-supervise students enrolled in the BA Psychology, MSc Global Health, or MSc Glbal Mental Health programmes. This allows researchers to gain valuable teaching and supervision skills as part of their doctoral training. Supervision of master's theses is generally shared with a full-time academic staff member.

How many courses must I take for credit in order to fulfil the requirements of a PhD? The number of compulsory modules varies across Schools. Therefore, the number of ECTS credits required to fulfil the requirements of a PhD is entirely dependent on the School in which you are enrolled. Should you be invited to submit a formal application, you would enrol in the School where your primary supervisor is based. Attending and presenting at the weekly TCGH Seminars each term is mandatory for all PhD candidates in the Trinity Centre for Global Health.

What are the deadlines for submitting an application to the PhD in the Trinity Centre for Global Health? Trinity has two enrolment periods: September and March intakes. If candidates wish to be considered for the March intake, it is strongly advised that they submit their application by December 1st. For a September start, it is strongly advised that candidates submit their application by June 1st.

Am I permitted to have a co-supervisor from another institution? A second, or even third, co-supervisor may be beneficial. Typically, co-supervisors are located within organisations in the country where the student’s research is taking place. In 2014, TCD introduced an internal PhD advisory system whereby all PhD students are assigned two advisors in addition to their appointed supervisor. These mentors will be chosen by you and your supervisor and approved by the Director of Postgraduate Teaching and Learning. You will be expected to arrange a meeting with your supervisor and your two mentors at least once a year to review your progress and the annual report on your work, which you will be expected to write ahead of this meeting. Students are responsible for preparing an annual report based on the research they have been undertaking.

Will I have the opportunity to study or work in other institutions outside of Trinity College Dublin during the course of my PhD? Many of our PhD students spend time with one of our numerous international collaborating partners . This includes, but is not limited to, spending time in partner academic institutions in both low and middle-income countries, UN agencies, the private sector, and non-governmental organisations. As many of our students’ research takes places in resource-poor contexts, it follows that many of our students spend a considerable amount of their time outside of the Trinity Centre for Global Health.

What funding options are available to PhD students? Unfortunately, there is very little funding available for PhD students. For current openings for funded PhD positions as well as relevant PhD funding bodies please see Fees and Bursaries.

What if I do not have a background in Global Health, can I still apply? As an interdisciplinary Centre, applications are welcome from individuals with diverse educational and academic backgrounds as long as the research conducted as part of their PhD is clearly related to the area of Global Health. Preference is given to applicants whose research falls under one of the Centre’s principal research themes. Individuals should also clearly demonstrate a deep understanding of the principles and theories of Global Health research.

Conducting interviews in Dhulikhel with a verbal autopsy tool.

The Department of Global Health and the Department of Health Metrics Sciences  offer an interdisciplinary PhD program in Global Health that is the first of its kind, building on the expertise of our faculty in the areas of metrics and implementation science. The PhD program provides students with the latest and most innovative tools to advance global health solutions that are critical for decision-making and priority setting.

PhD candidates will have the opportunity to study in Seattle, one of the true global health capitals, where innovators in research, funding, and delivery work side by side to improve population health. Our doctoral program offers amazing opportunities to those who choose to pursue a career in academia, international organizations, ministries of health, foundations, or the private sector.

At the University of Washington, diversity is integral to excellence. We value and honor diverse experiences and perspectives, strive to create welcoming and respectful learning environments, and promote access, opportunity and justice for all.

Choosing An Area of Emphasis

  • Implementation Science

Select from the following:

Implementation science focuses on developing and applying diverse, state-of-the-art methodologies to understand and improve complex health systems to close the gap between incomplete evidence on interventions into effective programs. The interdisciplinary implementation science framework includes systems analysis and improvement techniques; innovative designs to measure impact; economic analysis; and policy research to inform the formulation, implementation, and scale-up of improved delivery approaches.

Because of the applied nature of this area of emphasis, it is expected that implementation science doctoral projects will involve primary data collection.

Examples of dissertation topics:

  • Development, application, and evaluation of simulation and optimization models for provincial and district human resource allocation systems
  • Systems analysis and improvement for malaria case management in primary health care settings
  • Stepped wedge trial of alternative delivery strategies for prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV
  • Cost effectiveness of partner services for HIV
  • Impact of the introduction of point of care diagnostics for TB care system performance

Prospective students will find more information about applying here , and should select “Global Health Metrics and Implementation Science (PhD)” in the dropdown when beginning their application.

Metrics students translate evidence into useful knowledge by learning and applying advanced quantitative methods, impact evaluation techniques, and analytic tools. Students in the metrics area of emphasis organize their research around answering three critical questions that are essential to understanding the current state of population health and strategies necessary to improve it.

  • What are the world’s major health problems
  • How well is society addressing these problems?
  • How do we best dedicate resources to maximize health improvement?

Examples of projects that doctoral students in metrics engage in:

  • Estimating the Global Burden of Disease for diabetes
  • Improving the cost effectiveness of antiretroviral delivery systems in sub-Saharan Africa
  • Improving the methods to measure mortality by cause in a comparable way across countries
  • Evaluating the effect of malaria control policies on reducing child mortality
  • The contribution of development assistance for health on health outcomes

Prospective students will find more information about applying here , and should select “Health Metrics Sciences (PhD)” in the dropdown when beginning their application.

What is implementation science? What is metrics? This short video features our students discussing the PhD program in Global Health, including the definitions of metrics and implementation science, their dissertation, research, and what makes this program unique.

In this unique interdisciplinary program, students develop skills through a combination of didactic courses, seminars, and research activities including primary data collection and analysis. The PhD program is comprised of a core curriculum in advanced quantitative methods, epidemiology, population health measurement, impact evaluations, and implementation science methods.

The PhD program specializes in two areas of emphasis, metrics and implementation science. Metrics is dedicated to providing students with advanced training in independent, rigorous, and timely scientific measurements to accelerate progress on global health by identifying the world’s major health problems, assessing how well society addresses these problems, and guiding resource allocation to maximize health improvements. Implementation science focuses on the systematic application of scientific approaches to ask and answer questions regarding evidence of intervention efficacy to implementation. This science addresses how interventions can be scaled-up with greater speed, fidelity, efficiency, quality, and coverage.

Upon graduation, students will have acquired the knowledge and skills required to make meaningful and innovative contributions to the field of global health.

The applications for each area of emphasis in the PhD program are separate, and prospective students must apply using the application for the area of emphasis they wish to pursue. Prospective metrics students can learn more about the program, and the application here .

About the Programme

The GHPU PhD programme in Global Health Policy is a three-year programme (six years for part-time students) that provides rigorous postgraduate training to those interested in pursuing interdisciplinary research across public health and the social sciences.

PhD students joining GHPU will be supervised by two experienced members of staff, chosen on the basis of their knowledge of the applicant’s field of study. Supervisors offer regular guidance, consultation and support at all stages of the student’s research.

GHPU welcomes proposals in the following broad research areas:

  • Universal health coverage
  • Health systems financing
  • Commercial determinants of health
  • Health and global governance
  • Inequalities and health
  • Evidence, advocacy and policy

Please also see GHPU staff profiles for specific research topics staff are interested in supervising.

Research Training

Students enrolled in a PhD programme at the School of Social and Political Science undertake in their first year of studies a set of  training courses , which meet the requirements of the ESRC Postgraduate Research Training Guidelines. The choice of courses will be tailored around the student training needs in order to prepare the PhD candidate for later stages of their research. We may also encourage our students to attend courses in other schools across the university or at other institutions, if this benefits their project or professional development.

Throughout the degree we expect our PhD students to attend and actively contribute to the doctoral seminar programme, which is structured around three key areas of academic study: theory, method, and academic practice.

We further encourage students to take on a limited amount of teaching in health-policy related areas, for which they must attend the relevant training courses. In addition, students are invited to make use of the wide range of courses for professional development provided by the  Institute for Academic Development .

The degree of PhD is awarded for a thesis which must draw on the student’s own research and which makes a significant contribution to knowledge in the chosen field of study and contains material worthy of publication. The thesis must demonstrate adequate knowledge of the field of study and relevant literature, and the ability to look critically at both the candidate’s own work and that of other scholars in the field.

Studying with GHPU

The PhD Global Health Policy programme is situated within the Global Health Policy Unit, which is located in University’s School of Social and Political Science. This reflects the programme’s reach across traditional boundaries, linking policy analysis, public health, social policy, economics, sociology, medicine and epidemiology.

About the Program

The Doctoral Program in Global Health and Development (GHD) is a new and distinctive training program anchored in the Hubert Department of Global Health, and affiliated with the Public Health Sciences cluster of doctoral programs within the James T. Laney School of Graduate Studies .

The goal of this program is to train leaders and scholars who use science to improve public health policy and practice for underserved populations globally. Graduates will acquire a solid understanding of the theoretical frameworks of implementation science and relevant methodological skills required to guide programs and policies that are designed to improve health outcomes in a variety of settings across the globe.

Training will provide students with deep and broad expertise in the field of global health and development, creativity to cross discipline boundaries, courage to challenge convention, and confidence to ask unexpected questions and articulate bold new perspectives.

Training faculty include 47 core faculty members and 10 affiliated faculty members who are based at several partner institutions such as the Carter Center and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The core faculty have primary appointments in the Rollins School of Public Health, Emory School of Medicine, Emory College of Arts and Sciences, Goizueta School of Business, Nell Hodgson School of Nursing and Emory Law School and represent a wide variety of disciplines.  The GHD PhD Program collaborates closely with the Emory Master’s in Development Practice program , a two-year professional degree that prepares students for careers in development and humanitarian fields.

What You’ll Learn

This new PhD offering is one of the only programs globally that specifically offers a doctoral degree in Global Heath and Development. Distinct program advantages include:

  • a specific focus on interrelationships between global health and other components of development (e.g. education, urban growth),
  • deep learning in ethics and leadership,
  • rigorous training in implementation science and interventions, and
  • an explicit recognition that field training can be local or global. Moreover, Emory’s strong collaborative ties and engagement of experts based in non-academic settings, such as CARE, The Carter Center and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention offer our students unparalleled opportunities for training with experts who are engaged in designing and implementing programs and policies that influence global health and development. These are innovations in training that leverage the expertise of our faculty and our partnerships that are not explicitly emphasized at other institutions in the US or abroad.

Specific skills that the graduates of this program will acquire include a solid understanding of the theoretical frameworks and practical aspects of using implementation science to guide programs and policies that are designed to improve health outcomes in a variety of settings across the globe combined with an understanding of the importance of development theory and practice and ethical challenges.

They will also gain the relevant methodological skills and underlying theory based on their area of interest and career goals (for e.g. policy and advocacy, improving health systems and/or designing and evaluating strategies that include behavioral and/or biomedical interventions in varying areas such as maternal and child health, infectious diseases, noncommunicable diseases and mental health).

The trainees in this unique program will be challenged to study and think about issues such as scalability, i.e. exploring the processes and transition through which stakeholders become increasingly skillful and committed to using an intervention and assimilating these interventions into societal structures and functioning within a given context.

They will have core courses that cover the range of content and skills-based knowledge that they need and will have access to a vast variety of elective courses across Emory based on their project needs and/or personal interests.

Emory University’s PhD in Global Health and Development seeks to fill that capacity gap by training leaders in the field with strong methodological foundations to design, manage, implement, and evaluate programs and policies in diverse settings.

The application for the Fall 2021 admissions cycle will open in September 2020. The application deadline is December 1 st . You can submit your application before your letter writers have submitted their letters of recommendation. Make sure you upload the correct version of your statement of purpose, resume and transcripts, as our office is unable to remove or add any document in your application once it has been submitted. View the full list of Admissions Requirements.

Degree Requirements

A full-time course load, considered 9 credit hours or more per semester, is required for all GHD doctoral students. All students must pass the Qualifying Exam before taking the General Doctoral Exam. A Master’s degree will not be granted without a thesis. Independent of admission status, ALL STUDENTS in the GHD Doctoral Program are required to take and pass the Qualifying Exam.

Training Program

The GHD program provides students and program faculty several opportunities for providing feedback. For students, these will include, but are not restricted to, regular meetings with the DGS, participation in the Executive Committee (EC) meetings (two student representatives will be elected by the graduate student body), and meetings with the DGS who will be available by email and during structured office hours.

The DGS will also routinely obtain feedback and obtain student evaluations of the core courses and performance of teaching assistants and other guest lecturer faculty. In these reviews, students will have the opportunity to report on how the curriculum fosters the development of critical thinking skills and make recommendations for additional new courses and/or training opportunities that will be pursued actively.

The EC will also solicit annually from program faculty feedback about the program for discussion at EC meetings in their consideration and application of program changes.

This event includes an overview of the GHD program, the application process, and admission process as well as an introduction to the Hubert Department of Global Health by the Department Chair, Dr. Usha Ramakrishnan, and a panel discussion by current students in the GHD program, followed by a Q&A session.

What our students say…

The staff members that I encountered were warm, welcoming and supportive of my studies. The relatively small size of the University’s postgraduate school created a close family/communal environment for both staff and students. This provided a good support system as I could quickly grow acquainted with the postgraduate team and other Doctoral research candidates.

Programs in building community, stanford african scholars in global health program (sash).

A new initiative to promote health equity, capacity-strengthening, and unique focused learning between African medical institutions and Stanford.

About the Program

*Thank you to everyone who applied for our first two cohorts! The window to apply closed Feb. 25, 2024. Please join our list-serv below to be notified when we open the next application cycle.*

This three-year program supports 24 mid-career physicians from African countries to travel to Stanford for a six-week period of time, gaining a specific skill set identified by the African scholars as a need to improve health outcomes at their academic institution. Physicians will then return to their home countries to conduct a year-long clinical improvement project focused on the skill set they identified. This inaugural program is led by the Stanford Center for Innovation in Global Health, in partnership with the Stanford Center for Medical Education, and funded by an independent educational grant from Pfizer.

Stanford will host a total of 24 scholars across several cohorts during the 3-year program (between 2024-2027). Each fellowship consists of two phases: The first at Stanford; the second in the country of their home institution.

Each cohort of accepted scholars will begin their fellowship with six weeks at Stanford, where they will be appointed as Visiting Instructors. The program will be tailored to their interests and implementation project topics.

Scholars will observe in clinical settings at Stanford hospitals and clinics and engage in other learning activities, including meeting with Stanford experts and participating in lectures and simulation activities where appropriate.

Each scholar will have a Stanford Faculty mentor, who will advise and train them. To facilitate bi-directional learning, scholars will have the opportunity to earn Continuing Medical Education credit, give guest lectures and present to the Stanford community.

The scholar’s time at Stanford will foster quality improvement for their home institution, including but not limited to subspecialty knowledge, treatment and management of complex cases, and/or advanced medical technology. They will also observe different approaches to care, health systems management, and medical education, all designed to enhance the identified skillset needed at their home institution.

After training at Stanford, scholars will return to their academic institutions with a grant of up to $50,000 from Pfizer, provided directly to their institution, to implement their individual proposed project over the next 12-18 months. They will engage in virtual meetings with their Stanford mentors as appropriate, for continued support.  CIGH will hold a final convening (likely in East Africa) in Year 3 with all scholars where they will present on the impact that their projects have achieved.

Eligibility

This program is open to licensed African physicians who are currently working as faculty at an African academic institution. Eligible applicants should be engaged in clinical care, teaching and scholarly activity that advances clinical medicine. The program is open to physicians from all specialties and primary care who seek a specific skill to improve health outcomes at their institution. However, we will prioritize those from Sub-Saharan Africa interested in the fields of antimicrobial resistance, oncology, vaccine uptake or inflammatory diseases.

To be considered, applicants must meet all the following eligibility criteria:

  • Be in good standing within their institutions and demonstrate an ongoing commitment to improving health outcomes in their home countries.
  • Be an African citizen* who is currently living, teaching and practicing clinically in an African country.
  • Be a board-certified medical doctor with one of the following degrees: MD, MBChB or MMed.
  • Be a mid-career physician, appointed as a faculty member for at least 3 and less than 15 years.
  • Have strong working proficiency in written and spoken English (as determined by the selection committee).

* This program is not open to United States-licensed Healthcare Professionals *This program is only for physicians practicing in Africa and applicants may not reside, and their home institutions may not be located in a restricted market (includes the Crimean Peninsula, Cuba, the Donbass Region, Iran, North Korea, Sudan and Syria). Applicants cannot be listed on any restricted persons and entities list maintained by the US, EU, UN or other relevant government bodies.

About 25 students are currently registered in the Joint PhD Programme.

In January 2023, Nagasaki University hold the WISE/Sakigake Symposium in Nagasaki. Most of the current students gave a talk at the symposium, and the recordings are available at the symposium website . See the list of the students and other speakers in the Symposium Programme (pdf).

The recordings of the students’ turbo talks given at the 2022 Bridging Japan-UK Online Symposium are also available on demand (See the recording on the WISE&LSHTM-Nagasaki Joint PhD Day on 7 March 2022 on the website )

The PhD Programme is based on completion of an independent piece of original research. The research will be carried out under the guidance of supervisors from both Universities, with additional support provided by members of an advisory committee.

Students will have at least one named supervisor from each University. A Lead Supervisor will be identified, which will determine the Lead University for the research student.

Research students will be registered directly for the Joint PhD award, without a preliminary period of registration for the Master of Philosophy (MPhil) degree. Normally, research students will spend at least six months at each of the two Universities. The timing, and possible subdivision, of these periods of residence will be aligned to the needs of the individual research degree study. There will also be opportunities for research students to undertake research in resource-poor settings around the world.

Qualifying Examination

A Qualifying Examination (QE) Panel will review the progress of each research student after 7-11 months of full-time registration. All QE requirements (including any resubmissions) must be completed by 18 months (maximum). The QE consists of a written report (max 7,500 words), an open seminar, and a closed meeting with an assessment panel. The QE provides students with feedback to improve the design of their research and identifies students who are struggling with progress and unlikely to complete a PhD successfully. Continuation in the Joint PhD programme will be allowed only if the QE Panel is satisfied that the research study and the research student’s progress are sufficiently advanced to indicate that the PhD standard will be reached within the permitted period of registration.

PhD Research Thesis

Students complete a written research thesis for the PhD degree which must be written in English with satisfactory literary presentation, and include a full reference list. The thesis should not exceed 100,000 words in length.

PhD duration

Research students will be registered at both universities in late September or early October, enabling them to access the resources of both universities, subject to the relevant regulations, policies and procedures at each university.  The minimum and maximum periods of registration for the Joint PhD programme will be as set out below.

Part-time is not offered in the Joint PhD Programme.

*Please see the fee and funding information for the April 2024 entry in the project proposal.

  • Prepare the application and supporting documents for your application - we strongly recommend that you discuss your application with the listed supervisor; and
  • Submit your application  through the LSHTM online application portal

To apply with your own project idea: We also encourage you to propose your own research project idea in the field of global health. The research idea should not only be novel but also capitalise on the strengths of the partnership between LSHTM and NU. If you are proposing your own idea you will need to identify supervisors in each institution who would supervise your PhD if your application is successful. If you would like to propose your own idea:

1 - Read our Joint PhD Application guidance  and Joint PhD supporting documents

2 - Contact potential supervisors at NU-TMGH and/or LSHTM

3 - Identify one potential supervisor from each university. You may find it helpful to contact the Joint PhD Programme Coordinator, Kazuyo Machiyama  and the NU-TMGH admin office to help you identify potential supervisors.

Use the websites to look at research taking place across the Universities and identify the members of staff who would be most appropriate for your area of interest. LSHTM potential supervisor There are three main ways to identify an appropriate supervisor at LSHTM to contact

  • Browse LSHTM’s  Faculties  or  Centres pages  to find the research we do in your area of interest. Our research is multidisciplinary and it may be that your area of interest is represented in more than one Faculty. Centres are cross-Faculty and multidisciplinary. Click through to the department or centre website to find staff profiles.
  • Look on the  LSHTM People Search database  where you can search for potential supervisors by keyword, research areas or region. Not all academics are listed in the people search but it is a good place to start.
  • Search our  online research resources , LSHTM’s open access repository, including journal articles, theses and videos by School authors. If you identify a research paper that particularly interests you it is likely that one of the authors would be a suitable research supervisor.

See the "  before you apply " section of our website for information on finding and writing to a prospective supervisor.

Nagasaki University potential supervisor To find NU supervisor’s contact details, please visit the TMGH website and faculty contact details can be found under the top bar “About TMGH – Faculty”. If there are no contact details on the faculty page, please email to TMGH admin office: [email protected]

4 - Prepare the application and supporting documents for your application in discussion with the potential supervisors. In your research proposal, you are expected to describe the roles of LSHTM and NU in your project and explain why the collaboration is helpful, and indicate that you have the approval of the potential supervisors.

5 - Submit your application  through the LSHTM online application portal .

After submission of your application:

Applicants who pass the preliminary shortlisting will be invited for an interview.

April 2024 entry:

  • Interviews will be held on 2nd or 7th February 2024
  • Results for successful candidates (Notification of Successful candidates): 22 February, 10:00 JST

September 2024 entry:

  • Interviews will be held on 13 March 2024
  • Results and notification for successful candidates: JST 10am on 25 March 2024

1 - Applications

If you are graduating before the programme starts, you will be eligible to apply for the Joint PhD programme. As it’s mentioned in the list of supporting documents for application, if you are yet to complete your highest academic qualification, you will need to submit an interim transcript (an up-to-date copy of your results so far) along with your next highest qualification.

Yes. We only accept degree certificates and academic transcripts (and qualification document(s) if relevant) in English.

Please read the English requirement FAQs carefully. If English is not your first language, you will need to meet the Band B English language requirements for the Joint PhD Programme.

Applicants who are a national of a majority English-speaking country or who have successfully completed an appropriate academic qualification (at least equivalent to a UK Bachelor’s degree), which was taught in a majority English speaking country from the UKVI approved country list , automatically meet the programme’s English language requirements.

Any applicants who do not meet the Band B English language requirement or are not exempted from providing an English language test score will be required to fulfil this requirement, should an offer of admission be given. If they fail to meet the English language requirement by August, their offer of admission for the year will be rescinded.

Because Nagasaki University takes students only once a year in October, all joint PhD students must commence the course at the start of an academic year, in late September.

Approximately 5 students will be offered a place.

Only shortlisted applicants who proceed for the interview will be asked to pay the Nagasaki University application fee. Further information about how to pay the application fee will be given to shortlisted applicants. Please note that the application fee is non-refundable except when the application fee was paid but the application documents were insufficient or they accidently paid the application fee twice. In principle, the refund charge must be borne by the applicant and request for a refund must be made within 14 days from the last day of the application period.

It is desirable for applicants to have some knowledge of Japanese language and culture though it is not mandatory. As long as they hold the normal minimum entrance qualification, they can apply to the programme.  In your application it is important to show how the link with Japan is relevant for your research.

The interview will take place online using the web conferencing system such as Zoom.

2 - Joint PhD Programme

The research degree will be awarded jointly by Nagasaki University and the University of London .

Students are normally expected to spend 6 months in each institution during the study. This is to enable students to benefit from the institutions’ academic environment and gain any training required for successful completion of their doctoral work. In some cases, a request can be made to reduce this minimum residency period if students and supervisors can demonstrate that they will receive the necessary training and support, or if personal or financial circumstances make residency challenging.

NU-LSHTM Joint PhD degree programme is offered as full-time registration only and the students cannot engage in full-time work whilst studying full-time.

3 - Fees & Funding

Please see the general FAQs on fees and funding on the LSHTM website and the Nagasaki University’s WISE website .

The current students pay the fees from personal savings, family support or other scholarship awards which only cover tuition fees. Nagasaki University runs a competitive waiver scheme for its tuition and admission fees which all successful candidates are eligible to apply for. The decisions on applications for the waivers are made by the Nagasaki University Student Support Department and only a limited number of student(s) who both demonstrate the academic excellence and bear financial hardship shall be considered for the fee waiver.

Please note that the fee waiver is very competitive and the acceptance rate for the admission fee waiver is very low. Please prepare to pay the admission fee and tuition fee in case your fee waiver application is rejected. If the admission or tuition fees are not received by the stipulated deadline, your registration will be terminated.

Statistical Analyst in the Center for Anti-Racism, Social Justice & Public Health | NYU School of Global Public Health

I have a Bachelor's of Business Administration in Statistics and Quantitative Modeling from Baruch College and Masters of Applied Statistics in Social Research from NYU. I’m interested in topics such as leveraging Causal inference, Simulations, and Bayesian inference to behavioral studies, Artificial intelligence and Machine Learning Ethics, and Arbitrage Strategies.

I had experience working as a graduate research fellow at NYU researching COVID-19 at a socioeconomic level between NYC and London with statistical and machine learning methods. I also interned at companies such as eBay where I was on a data science team exploring drivers of a metric using machine learning in Summer 2021. In Summer 2022, I simulated changes in a metric given a customer behavioral variable and used causal forests, bayesian additive regression trees, and double machine learning to identify subgroups of interest. At American Family Insurance I worked on collaborating with model developers, owners, and users to mitigate the risk of usage of statistical models to make informed business decisions and updating the AI/ML policy. My current role is being a statistician for CASJPH at NYU. My work consists of doing statistical analysis for research topics such as identifying at-risk groups for genetic testing and for people that use opioids. Other areas of research include looking at disparities over time with public health outcomes from the CDC, helping in building a Racism & Public Health Survey and supporting faculty in their own public health research.

Professor Eduardo J. Gómez Joins Council of Foreign Relations as Life Member

Gómez receives global recognition for scholarship and contributions to global health policy.

  • Eduardo Gomez

Ed Gomez

Eduardo J. Gómez , professor in the College of Health ’s department of community & population health, has been elected to life membership at the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR). With this achievement, Gómez, a political scientist, is globally recognized for his contributions in the area of global health policy.

“I’m deeply honored for the opportunity to join this prestigious organization and to represent Lehigh,” he said. “CFR is a non-partisan think tank located in New York City and arguably the most recognized and influential organization committed to providing analysis on several issues in foreign affairs.”

Founded in 1921, CFR publishes Foreign Affairs, the preeminent journal of international affairs and foreign policy. Gómez joins an elite group of business, government, academic and other influential figures, including former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and actors Angelina Jolie and George Clooney.

“You never know who is going to be at the meetings,” he said. “It really is an honor just to be there. You may rub shoulders with people who are currently in government, or former Secretaries of State. All of these people who are members are major figures in their world.”

In 2009, Gómez joined the organization as a term member, a membership category for up-and-coming individuals who are making significant contributions in their field. As a life member, he will continue to share his expertise in global health, with a focus on Latin America and emerging middle income countries. The application process for both membership categories is very competitive, he said.

As a scholar of the politics of global health, Gómez will work to “further develop this growing field of interest,” he said. “In the field of global health, there’s a small group of us that are doing this type of work, but we’re growing tremendously.” He also hopes to serve as a mentor to aspiring academics.

Notable achievements over Gómez’s career include the publication of two books, “Junk Food Politics” and “Geopolitics of Health,” published by Johns Hopkins University Press. He led the first series on political science and health in The Lancet, one of the world’s oldest peer-reviewed medical journals. Gómez has published many academic journal articles and articles for major news and policy outlets, including Foreign Affairs, and has been a frequent contributor to news outlets such as CNN and BBC.

Gómez said he is honored to represent Lehigh and looks forward to facilitating opportunities for student involvement with the Council on Foreign Relations.

WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FOR?

Key searches, meet mika ishii: 2024 undergraduate student speaker and global health graduate.

Mika Ishii earns her Bachelor of Science in Global Health and minor in Natural Sciences from USC.

“Every “first” that year felt really special!”’~Mika Ishii

In 2020, Mika Ishii started her freshman year online, signing-in from her hometown in Hawaii. “All my classes were on Zoom, and it was really difficult—especially with the time difference,” she says.  Ishii, a recipient of the Presidential Scholarship , initially started at USC as an economics major and outside of class, she joined the USC Trojan Marching Band as a member of the alto saxophone section. “I was able to meet really great friends through this experience and it gave me a sense of community during the pandemic,” she explains.

The following year, Ishii relocated to Los Angeles and began her sophomore year at University Park Campus—which she says felt more like her freshman year. She moved into the residential college suites and finally put a face to the names of students she had met virtually the prior year. “It was nice to meet everybody for the first time and talk to them in-person,” she recalls. “Whether it was watching football games with my friends and witnessing school spirit or playing with the Trojan Marching Band at a basketball game and hearing that sound live—every “first” that year felt really special.”

On campus, she switched her major. “The moment I took Dr. Wipfli’s class ‘Introduction to Global Health’, I knew that global health was the right major for me, and I decided to pursue a career in medicine,” she reveals. “I have really enjoyed combining the social and natural sciences and taking courses ranging from international relations and economics to health promotion. They have provided me with a way to see different aspects of the world—whether that’s connecting economic trends or learning about globalization and policy, I learned how systemic issues can affect health,” she remarks.

During her time at USC, Ishii participated in the USC GRIT Lab led by Director of Undergraduate Programs Heather Wipfli, PhD , where she conducted drowning prevention research in Uganda. “What drew me to this work is the fact that I’m from Hawaii and we’re surrounded by the ocean, so I’ve grown up understanding how important it is to learn about swimming and water safety,” she affirms. “I have taken so many classes with Dr. Wipfli and have learned so much from conducting research with her. She has really inspired me as a mentor. The same is also true for Dr. Panayiota Courelli who has helped me with career development and given me great advice.”

Outside the program, Ishii was involved in the USC Undergraduate Student Government for four years. In her role as associate director for the performing, visual arts, and cultural funds, she helped students finance a variety of projects from theatre productions to cultural events. “This experience is something I really enjoyed because students may otherwise not have been able to produce events for their communities. It’s been my way to help the larger Trojan family,” she says.

Ishii has also been involved with several organizations volunteering her time and efforts to the Luskin Orthopaedic Institute for Children, Medicinal Music Makers, and tutoring other students in the global health program. “What I am most proud of during my time here is being able to impact people, whether that has been on campus or across the greater Los Angeles area.”

Away from USC, Ishii interned at the University of Hawaii Cancer Center looking at cancer disparities through clinical trials. “I became interested in this research because of its global health focus. It provided me an opportunity to apply what I had learned at USC, through my research and statistics classes, to a real-life study,” she indicates.

After graduation, Ishii intends to conduct research before applying to medical school. Thereafter, she hopes to address health disparities in her community in Hawaii. “I want to make a positive impact on the world and hope to use the knowledge that I gained in this program to help those across the islands where there are not enough healthcare workers or doctors,” she maintains.

Looking back on the last four years she reflects, “this program is really great, and it has wonderful faculty, staff, and students who all share a similar goal of making a positive impact on the world.” She advises other students to find the joy in life and appreciate the little moments, because it goes by so fast. She concludes by saying, “take what you receive from this program and give back to your own community—because I think that is really important!”

Seven Miami University graduate students in Project Dragonfly ’s Advanced Inquiry Program (AIP) and Global Field Program (GFP) were recently awarded scholarships totaling $10,750 .

Shelby Elder, Lane Forthofer, Diana Hunt, Tiger Irvin, Emily Summers, Sanjana Ramesh, and Aurelia Valente

About Our 2024 Scholarship Winners

Rosie Bloom Scholarship

AIP graduate student Shelby Elder of Amelia, Ohio, and GFP graduate student Lane Forthofer of Rocky River, Ohio, are the recipients of the Rosie Bloom Scholarship. The scholarship, named for local Audubon Society charter member and nature advocate Rosie Bloom, helps support Earth Expeditions (EE) students who live or work in the Audubon Miami Valley membership area.

Shelby (she/her) is a science teacher at Goshen High School in Goshen, Ohio. Since joining the GFP in 2023, Shelby has studied desert biodiversity, island biogeography, and whale sharks in Baja, Mexico . This summer Shelby will travel to the Galápagos Islands to study the forces of evolutionary, geologic, and social change through work with ECOS , a newly established local Galápagos organization grounded by its start as a program of Ecology Project International. Through her Master Plan (a kind of personal mission statement for what she wants to accomplish in the program), Shelby would like to teach her students their required state content in a way that promotes inquiry by allowing students to investigate and discover their local community. Shelby is focused on enhancing the biodiversity in her community that has been impacted by a tornado and the recent addition of several new housing developments. In her free time, she enjoys traveling with friends, trying new restaurants, and training for her first full marathon!

Lane (she/her) is a junior high math teacher in Westlake, Ohio. Since joining the AIP in 2022, Lane has taken courses on the web from Miami University while also participating in unique learning experiences on the grounds of Cleveland Metroparks Zoo and in natural settings around northeastern Ohio. This summer Lane will travel to Costa Rica to study ecology and ecotourism. She will trek through the lowland rainforest, montane forest, and coastal ecosystems while investigating the biotic, physical, and cultural forces that affect tropical biodiversity. Lane is focusing her graduate studies on creating opportunities for junior high students to become more environmentally and sustainability literate. This past school year, she started an environmental science club. In her free time, Lane enjoys working out, reading, doing puzzles, riding bikes, traveling and spending time outdoors.

Dragonfly’s Inquiry, Community, Voice Scholarship

AIP graduate students Diana Hunt of Lindenhurst, New York, and Tiger Irvin of Fairview Park, Ohio, are the recipients of Dragonfly’s Inquiry, Community, Voice Scholarship. Created in 2021, the Dragonfly scholarship supports Dragonfly students who are committed to furthering the fields of inclusion, diversity, environmental justice, and other related fields using innovative and relevant approaches to conservation.

Diana (she/her) is a bilingual science teacher for the Patchogue Medford School District. Since joining the AIP in 2023, Diana has taken courses on the web from Miami University while also participating in unique learning experiences on the grounds of the Bronx Zoo and in natural settings around New York. This summer Diana will participate in the global biomes course and explore the relationship between and among an area’s temperature patterns, annual precipitation and living organisms. Her master’s research focuses on spreading awareness to communities on Long Island of the dangers of poaching and deforestation through focusing on the Congo and the declining population of the western lowland gorillas. In her free time, Diana enjoys painting and playing with her dogs!

Tiger (he/him) is a student, volunteer, and seasonal horticulturist at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. Since joining the AIP in 2022, Tiger has taken courses on the web from Miami University while also participating in unique learning experiences on the grounds of the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo and in natural settings around northeastern Ohio. This summer Tiger will participate in AIP courses focused on ecophysiology and primate conservation. His master’s research centers on how people think about and engage with the zoo. In his free time, Tiger enjoys dancing, making art and music, gaming, and being active outdoors.

W. Hardy Eshbaugh–T.K. Wilson Scholarship in Botany

GFP graduate student Emily Summers of Waialua, Hawai'i, is the recipient of the W. Hardy Eshbaugh–T.K. Wilson Scholarship in Botany. This fund is possible in part due to Dr. T.K. Wilson, a leader in Bahamian floral biodiversity studies, and Dr. Hardy Eshbaugh, a pioneer in the field of ethnobotany (people's use of plants) working in many global locations. These emeritus professors exemplify a model for what is possible in international scientific botanical research and global partnerships. This scholarship can be used toward relevant course costs.

Emily (she/her) of Waialua, Hawai’i, is currently pursuing her Master of Arts (M.A.) degree in Biology in the GFP at Miami University. After studying community-based conservation in Belize last summer, she will be expanding her understanding of the nuances of CBC in Kenya this summer. She is dedicated to applying these concepts to O'ahu and is developing a master plan for fostering true community-based conservation on the island. Currently, she is developing a community powered coral reef monitoring program with aims of growing into community-led coral outplanting efforts. Emily is also a small business owner, and enjoys surfing and freediving in her free time.

José Pareja-Wendy Tori Scholarship

GFP graduate students Sanjana Ramesh of Washington, D.C., and Aurelia Valente of Sante Fe, New Mexico, are the recipients of the José Pareja-Wendy Tori Scholarship. José I. and Wendy, who are natives of Peru, were a part of the Dragonfly team at its inception in 2008, and they are currently both faculty members at Earlham College.

Sanjana (she/her) works as a program operations associate specialist for the World Wildlife Fund in Washington, D.C. Since joining the GFP in 2023, Sanjana has studied golden lion tamarins in Brazil ’s Atlantic Forest. This summer she will travel to India , where she’ll journey through the stunning ecological, cultural, and spiritual landscapes of the Western Ghats, and explore sacred groves and forest temples. Her master’s research focuses on promoting wildlife education among women and children in rural villages near wildlife reserves in Karnataka, India, her birthplace. In her free time, Sanjana enjoys exploring Washington, D.C.'s museums and cultural sites, going to the movies, spending time with her dogs, and discovering new environmental spaces with the South Asian environmental group she founded in D.C.

Aurelia (she/they) is a biology graduate student and ex-secondary biology educator from Santa Fe, New Mexico. Since joining the GFP in 2022, Aurelia has been a part of field studies in Baja, Mexico , and was part of the RedHawk Talks, a Ted-like talk hosted by Miami's Graduate School in April, 2024. Aurelia's presentation, titled "Disability Inclusion in STEM Academia" focused on the challenges associated with being a disabled graduate in STEM, as well as how her own journey has shaped her research as both a master's and doctoral student.

Aurelia's master portfolio is focused on adaptability and accessibility in biological education, communication, and research. She is currently working on a series of op-eds relating to the critical need for accessible science communication, and will travel to Australia this summer to study public conservation outreach exhibits that can be re-applied to conservation efforts in her home state.

Aurelia will also officially begin coursework for her Ph.D. at The University of New Mexico, in August, 2024, where she will be studying comparative behavioral biology. She will travel to The Flathead Lake Biological Station in Montana in June, to begin making initial observations for her dissertation research.

Aurelia spends most of her free time resting, and has spent the past year recovering from five major surgeries. "I'm kind of terrified to get back out into the world," she shares. But I'm too passionate to quit now."

Carrie R. Wilson Memorial Scholarship

GFP graduate student Emily Summers is also the recipient of the Carrie R. Wilson Memorial Scholarship . Pelecanus Inc. , a non-profit organization co-founded by AIP graduate Austin Parker and his brother Taylor, created this scholarship in 2021 in memory of Carrie Wilson, who served as Dean of Students at the University of San Diego Law School and believed in community inspiration through direct and intentional action.

Since 2009, Dragonfly graduate students have received more than $71,000 in scholarship funds. If you are interested in learning more about these scholarship opportunities, please visit the Dragonfly Scholarships webpage . If you are interested in becoming a scholarship donor, please contact Jill Korach at [email protected] or contribute to our ongoing Dragonfly scholarship here .
