An exciting application of AI can be found in chatbots. Here, the limitless scope of chatbots is explored. The various milestones reached by leading players  in bot technology such as Facebook, Skype and KIK are enumerated.

The evolution of chatbots and its absorption of more AI in the future is also looked into. E-Commerce is touted as the biggest beneficiary of the advancement in chatbots and that bot technology will owe its rise to services and commerce.

There are many who have been introduced to AI only recently due to the buzz surrounding it and may not be aware of the early developments that led to its current status.

This presentation from 2009 offers a simple yet informative introduction to the rudiments of AI. AI’s history and a timeline of all the significant milestones in AI up to 2009 can be found. The presentation also provides an introduction to AI programming languages such as LISP and PROLOG.

For those who would like to have a crash course on the basics of AI in order to catch up with it current trends, this presentation serves the purpose.

While the concepts of  AI or ML are not spoken about, light is shed on other important aspects of it. The presentation discusses about how many known tech giants such as Google are bolstering their AI capabilities through mergers and acquisitions.

The role of venture capital(VC) in the landscape of AI and machine learning,and the involvement of VC in the firms that were acquired are mentioned.

Another point highlighted is how large companies are moving towards ML and re-configuring themselves around ML, and how it is not a US-centric phenomenon. Key points have been expressed in the form of self-explanatory graphical representations. Rounding off the presentation is the possible direction that ML can take and a few pointers on achieving success in ML.

This presentation provides a comprehensive insight into deep learning. Beginning with a brief history of AI and introduction to basics of machine learning such as its classification, the focus shifts towards deep learning entirely.

Various kinds of networks such as recurrent neural nets and generative adversarial networks have been discussed at length. Emphasis has been given to important aspects of these networks and other mechanisms such as natural language processing (NLP).

Detailed examples of practical applications and the scope of deep learning are found throughout the presentation. However, this presentation may prove difficult for first time learner’s of AI to comprehend.

10) The Future Of Work & The Work Of The Future

The subject of self-learning of robots and machines is explored here. Talking about the fictional Babel fish, it is suggested that the advancements in technology leading to improved learning and translations by machines  made the Babel fish a near-real entity.

New ‘power’ values such as speed, networked governance, collaboration and transparency, among others, have been put forth and juxtaposed against older ones that are not fully technology  driven.

Going against the popular assumption that robots and machines will replace human beings, the presentation proposes that we are on the brink of the largest job creation period in humanity.

This presentation is a briefing paper by the MIT Technological Review and talks about how the global adoption of AI is being sped up by Asian countries. It suggests that Asia will not only benefit greatly from the rise in AI technology, but will also define it.

The data collected for the review has been summarized in the form of simple info-graphics. They are a numerical reflection of the mood surrounding the adoption of AI across different industries and how it could possibly impact human capital.  The review also suggests that while there is awareness about AI in Asia, only a small percentage of companies are investing in it.

Pointers for business leaders in Asia to capitalize on AI is offered in the end along presentation with an info-graphic timeline of the history of AI.

While they are two separate presentations, they talk about the same subject- machine learning. The presentations are a summary of the analysis of machine learning adopted by two platforms, Netflix and Quora.

In case of Netflix, emphasis has been given to the choice of the right metric and the type of data used for testing and training. It also emphasises the need to understand the dependence between the data used and the models employed. The advice to optimize only areas that matter is offered.

The second presentation on Quora, talks about teaching machines only what is necessary. It stresses on the need the to focus on feature engineering and being thoughtful about the ML infrastructure. Another point it highlights is the combination of supervised and unsupervised being the key in ML application.

With 135 slides, this presentation provides an exhaustive insight into the creation of an ethically sound AI. An introduction to the subject of User Experience(UX) design is followed by the rules that have to be considered during the designing process.

The chronological progression of UX, beginning with experience design and ending with intelligence design, and the direction in which this process is headed is also discussed.

Supported by powerful visuals, the presentation touches upon many essential considerations such as nature of intelligence, purpose of existence, awareness of self and the need for which the AI is created.

It raises a pertinent point that while creating AI, human beings are creating something that embodies qualities that they lack.

Made for a school competition in 2009, it provides many examples of cutting-edge applications of AI at the time.

Many of the examples, such as mind controlled prosthetic limbs, Ultra Hal Assistant and Dexter- the robot provide a trip down the AI memory lane where the applications of AI seemed like a page out of a sci-fi novel. It presents a list of areas where AI can assist human beings.

Using artificial intelligence to create posters

Back in February, a presentation at Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence conference proposed “PosterBot”: an artificial intelligence (AI) for making conference posters. 

The authors, Xu and Wan, pitch automated poster making as a way to “save time.” They do this in three steps.

(W)e propose an automatic poster generation system which takes three steps, namely section filtering, content extraction, and poster composition.

First, they use an existing natural language AI to analyze the text.

Then, they analyze the figure captions to extract more text to determine where figure belong. They use the captions because the images are too abstract for AI to categorize.

Finally, they stick the extracted content into one of several pre-defined templates. They have both landscape and portrait formats. Here’s an example of a poster generated using the bot.

It might not win a competition for attractiveness, but it’s hardly the worst thing ever to hang in a poster session, either.

If I understand correctly, they treat poster creation as a matter of data compression . You have a whole bunch of text and figures, and the problem is cutting it down to the essentials. It’s true that many poster creators do put too much stuff of a poster.

So for PosterBot to work at all – never mind it bringing gains in efficiency – the entire project has to be already written up . Complete text. The whole enchilada.

In my experience, this is rarely the case. Posters are often the first time that people are bringing a project together. There is no text for an AI to select the best bits from because there is no text at all.

As they say on Shark Tank :

 “For that reason, I’m out.’

PosterBot may be interesting to AI researchers, but it seems unlikely to be helpful to rank and file poster makers.

I had written everything above and had scheduled this post when, coincidentally, I stumbled across another paper that was trying to generate posters automatically (Jin et al. 2022). This one is called Text2Poster.

Text2Poster differs from PosterBot. PosterBot is specifically trying to create academic posters. Text2Poster is trying to generate posters for a wider range of purposes.

But both share the same general process: creating a poster by extracting information from a relatively complete set of text. For a typical poster maker, that is not going to be there. 

Both projects are fascinating from an artificial intelligence perspective of “What can we make software do?”, but they are unlikely to be helpful to most conference poster creators.

And I had written everything above when I stumbled across a third paper (Lopes et al. 2022) about using artificial intelligence to design things. one is the furthers afield from academic conference posters.

EvoDesigner uses an “evolutionary” approach to spit out a series of suggestions that a human designer can work with. The works are measured by their “fitness,” and sent directly to Adobe InDesign.

This one is less relevant, but more interesting for a couple of reasons. One is that it “talks” directly with Adobe software, which is the existing industry standard for many. Second, it is a tool for idea generation, not final production creation.

That I stumbled across this series of papers in a matter of a couple of weeks shows that this is clearly going to be creating more options for conference poster creators going forward.

Poster Presentations

Most computer science conferences include a poster session where presenters stand beside large-format posters that summarize research results. Conference attendees then have the opportunity to sip tasty beverages while circulating among the posters and talking to the presenters about their work.

The goal of our poster session is to give you a chance to research some area of machine learning that interests you, and to present what you have learned. I'll be flexible about the topics of the posters. Possibilities include:

• A machine learning application area.
• A machine learning algorithm that we did not get a chance to cover in detail.
• A machine learning project that you are proposing - possibly with the first steps completed.

Your topic should be narrow enough for you to present it in some depth. Your poster should be visually appealing, include appropriate figures, and be technically accurate. Your poster should include properly formatted references to peer-reviewed papers.

You will get a deeper understanding of your topic if you dive in and actually write some code or try out some existing tools. A small component of your grade will be based on presenting original results. These results need not be groundbreaking or publishable. You should clearly establish an experimental question and show results that address that question.

• Deadline 1: Topic proposal + preliminary bibliography.
• Deadline 2: Annotated bibliography.
• Deadline 3: Electronic poster submission.
• Deadline 4: Poster presentation.

Topic Proposal

For this deadline you should submit a short (1-2 paragraph) description of your topic, along with at least three representative references. I suggest that you follow the The AAAI Press Reference Style in formatting your references.

Annotated Bibliography

Your annotated bibliography must include at least six peer-reviewed conference or journal papers. At least three of these papers must contain a reference to some other paper in your bibliography. At least three of your papers must have been published within the last four years. For each paper, you must provide complete bibliographic information as well as a brief summary of the paper. The summary should describe the key results, note any references to other papers in your bibliography, and explain the connection to those referenced papers.

Finding Papers

Here are some possible starting points for finding high quality papers.

Google Scholar is probably your best starting point. A good way to get started is do some keyword searches related to your topic and take a look at the most highly cited papers that appear relevant. There are many low-quality or uninteresting papers out there. Citation counts provide a good mechanism for focusing attention on noteworthy papers. Once you find an interesting paper you can follow forward and backward citations to get a deeper understanding of the topic.

Conference publications are the main avenue for disseminating research results in computer science. I've highlighted a few of the top conferences in several AI areas below. Except where noted, the proceedings for these conferences should be available on-line.

• Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition (CVPR)

A Note on arXiv.org

The arXiv.org web site provides a popular avenue for quickly disseminating research results that may not have undergone a formal process of peer review. Sometimes arXiv papers are under review for a journal or conference, sometimes they are pre-publication versions of papers that have since appeared in a peer-reviewed publication, sometimes they are more like informal white papers that are not intended for formal peer review.

The arXiv is great, but for the purposes of this project you should only use arXiv papers if they have actually appeared in a peer reviewed publication, or if they are clearly seminal papers (hundreds of citations). Full publication information will often appear in the "comments" section of a paper's arXiv page. The reference information you provide must include the full publication information.

Reading Research Papers

Reading a research paper is not like reading a novel or even a textbook. Research papers are usually written under the assumption that the audience will be other researchers in the same field. In addition, papers are often written under strict page limits that restrict amount of background information the authors can provide. The keys to making sense of research papers are patience and perseverance. I suggest the following steps.

Start by reading the abstract, the introduction and the conclusion. At this point the goal is to figure out the big-picture claims that the authors are making. What have they accomplished? Why does it matter? At this stage you may determine that the paper is not worth reading. If so, move on to a different paper.

• Next, read the whole paper all the way through. Twice. Read carefully, but don't get bogged down by equations or details. Get a sense for the overall organization of the paper and the main points that are being made in each section. Underline or highlight points that seem particularly important or difficult to understand.
• Finally, go back and try to puzzle out the parts of the paper that were unclear on the first few read-throughs. You will probably find that there are terms or concepts that are important, but are not explained in the paper. The Internet/Wikipedia may be helpful. You may also find that the authors are assuming that you are familiar with some other paper or body of work. You obviously won't be able to read every cited paper (and all of the papers cited in those papers), but some extra reading may be unavoidable.

By the time you finish, you should understand the key points that are being made in the paper. You may not understand every sentence and every equation, but you should know what you don't know, and be in a position to discuss it.

The grade for this project will be calculated as follows:

Your poster presentation will be evaluated by me, as well as by other members of the class, and possibly other members of the department. You will be evaluated both on the poster itself, and on your ability to present the contents.

Posters are broadly used to present the important points of academic papers and can be seen as a special form of document summarization. However, the problem of automatic poster generation is under-investigated. In this paper, we present PosterBot, an automatic poster generation system for academic papers. Given a scholarly paper, PosterBot takes three steps to generate the poster. It first selects the most important sections, and then generates corresponding panels from them. Finally, all panels are integrated to get the complete poster. The demonstration shows the efficacy of our proposed system.
