Computer Basics: What is a Computer?
Lesson 2: what is a computer.
/en/computerbasics/about-this-tutorial/content/
What is a computer?
A computer is an electronic device that manipulates information, or data. It has the ability to store , retrieve , and process data. You may already know that you can use a computer to type documents , send email , play games , and browse the Web . You can also use it to edit or create spreadsheets , presentations , and even videos .
Watch the video below to learn about different types of computers.
Looking for the old version of this video? You can still view it here .
Hardware vs. software
Before we talk about different types of computers, let's talk about two things all computers have in common: hardware and software .
Everything you do on your computer will rely on both hardware and software. For example, right now you may be viewing this lesson in a web browser (software) and using your mouse (hardware) to click from page to page. As you learn about different types of computers, ask yourself about the differences in their hardware. As you progress through this tutorial, you'll see that different types of computers also often use different types of software.
What are the different types of computers?
When most people hear the word computer , they think of a personal computer such as a desktop or laptop . However, computers come in many shapes and sizes, and they perform many different functions in our daily lives. When you withdraw cash from an ATM, scan groceries at the store, or use a calculator, you're using a type of computer.
Desktop computers
Many people use desktop computers at work, home, and school. Desktop computers are designed to be placed on a desk, and they're typically made up of a few different parts, including the computer case , monitor , keyboard , and mouse .
Laptop computers
The second type of computer you may be familiar with is a laptop computer , commonly called a laptop. Laptops are battery-powered computers that are more portable than desktops, allowing you to use them almost anywhere.
Tablet computers
Tablet computers —or tablets —are handheld computers that are even more portable than laptops. Instead of a keyboard and mouse, tablets use a touch-sensitive screen for typing and navigation. The iPad is an example of a tablet.
A server is a computer that serves up information to other computers on a network. For example, whenever you use the Internet, you're looking at something that's stored on a server. Many businesses also use local file servers to store and share files internally.
Other types of computers
Many of today's electronics are basically specialized computers , though we don't always think of them that way. Here are a few common examples.
- Smartphones : Many cell phones can do a lot of things computers can do, including browsing the Internet and playing games. They are often called smartphones .
- Wearables : Wearable technology is a general term for a group of devices —including fitness trackers and smartwatches —that are designed to be worn throughout the day. These devices are often called wearables for short.
- Game consoles : A game console is a specialized type of computer that is used for playing video games on your TV.
- TVs : Many TVs now include applications —or apps —that let you access various types of online content. For example, you can stream video from the Internet directly onto your TV.
PCs and Macs
Personal computers come in two main styles: PC and Mac . Both are fully functional, but they have a different look and feel, and many people prefer one or the other.
This type of computer began with the original IBM PC that was introduced in 1981. Other companies began creating similar computers, which were called IBM PC Compatible (often shortened to PC ). Today, this is the most common type of personal computer, and it typically includes the Microsoft Windows operating system.
The Macintosh computer was introduced in 1984, and it was the first widely sold personal computer with a graphical user interface, or GUI (pronounced gooey ). All Macs are made by one company ( Apple ), and they almost always use the Mac OS X operating system.

INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTER SOFTWARE
- A computer is a machine that takes instructions and performs computations based on those instructions.
CHARACTERISTICS OF COMPUTERS
GENERATION OF COMPUTERS
The word generation means the state of improvement in the product development process. Similarly, computer generation refers to the different advancements of new computer technology.
First Generation (1940-1956) Vacuum Tubes
The first generation computers used very large number of vacuum tubes for circuitry and magnetic drums for memory.
UNIVAC and ENIAC computers are prime examples of first-generation computing devices.
Advantages: Fastest calculating device of their time
Disadvantages:
1. Dissipate a lot of heat
2. Consume a lot of electricity
3. Very bulky in size
4. These computers were frequently down due to hardware failures.
5. These computers needed constant maintenance because of low mean time between failures
6. Limited commercial use because these computers were difficult to program
7. Very expensive
Second Generation (1956-1963) Transistors
- The second generation computers were manufactured using transistors.
- While first generation computers were programmed using machine language, second generation computers moved towards symbolic, or assembly languages, which allowed programmers to specify instructions in words.
- At this time, high-level programming languages like COBOL, FORTRAN, ALGOL and SNOBOL were also being developed.
- Second generation computers were first to store instructions in memory, which moved from a magnetic drum to magnetic core technology.
- Second generation computers were first developed for the atomic energy industry.
Advantages:
1. Consumed less electricity and thus dissipated less heat as compared to first generation computers
2. Faster, cheaper smaller and more reliable than first generation computers
3. Could be programmed using assembly language and high level languages
4. These computers had faster primary memory and a larger secondary memory
1. Second generation computers were manufactured using transistors that had to be assembled manually. This made commercial production of computers difficult and expensive.
Third Generation (1964-1971) Integrated Circuits
- The development of the integrated circuit was the hallmark of the third generation of computers.
- These computers had few megabytes of main memory and magnetic disks which could store few tens of megabytes of data per disk drive.
- High level programming languages like COBOL and FORTRAN were standardized by ANSI
- Some more high level programming languages like PL/I PASCAL and BASIC were introduced at this time.
- Third generation computers were the first to implement time sharing operating systems.
- Input to these computers could now be provided using keyboards and mouse.
- Faster than second generation computers and could perform 1 million transactions per second.
2. Smaller, cheaper and more reliable than their predecessors
3. These computers had faster and larger primary memory and secondary storage
4. They were widely used for scientific as well as business applications
5. During this generation of computers, standardization of existing high level languages and invention of new high level languages was done
6. These computers had time sharing operating system which allowed interactive use of computer by one or more users simultaneously thereby improving the productivity of the users.
Fourth Generation (1971-1989) Microprocessors
- The microprocessor started the fourth generation of computers with thousands of integrated circuits built onto a single silicon chip.
- Semi-conductor memories were used which were very fast, even the hard disks became cheaper, smaller in size and larger in capacity.
- For input, floppy disks (in addition to magnetic tapes) were used to port data and programs from one computer to another.
- During this period many new operating systems were developed like MS-DOS MS-Windows UNIX and Apple’s proprietary operating system.
- Development of GUIs, the mouse and handheld devices.
- In this period, several word processing packages, spreadsheet packages and graphics packages were introduced.
1. Smaller, cheaper, faster and more reliable
2. Consumed less electricity and therefore dissipated less heat
3. They had faster and larger primary memory and secondary storage
4. They could be used as general purpose computers.
5. GUIs enabled people to learn to work with computers very easily. So the use of computers in both office and home became widespread.
6. Networks allowed sharing of resources thereby efficient utilization of computer hardware and software
Fifth Generation (Present and Beyond) Artificial Intelligence
- The fifth generation computers are completely based on a new concept of artificial intelligence.
- Although such computers are still in development, there are certain applications like voice recognition which is widely being used today.
- In the fifth generation of computers the aim is to develop devices that respond to natural language input and are capable of learning and self-organization.
- The two most common are LISP and Prolog.
CLASSIFICATION OF COMPUTERS

Computer, any of a class of devices capable of solving problems by processing information in discrete form. It operates on data, including magnitudes, letters, and symbols, that are expressed in binary code — i.e., using only the two digits 0 and 1. By counting, comparing, and manipulating these digits or their combinations according to a set of instructions held in its memory, a digital computer can perform such tasks as to control industrial processes and regulate the operations of machines; analyze and organize vast amounts of business data; and simulate the behaviour of dynamic systems (e.g., global weather patterns and chemical reactions) in scientific research. A typical computer system has four basic functional elements : (1) Input-output equipment, (2) Main memory, (3) Control unit, and (4) Arithmetic-logic unit.

THE CENTRAL PROCESSING UNIT & OPERATING SYSTEMS

A computer is a device that can be instructed to carry out arbitrary sequences of arithmetic or logical operations automatically. The ability of computers to follow generalized sets of operations, called programs, enables them to perform an extremely wide range of tasks. Such computers are used as control systems for a very wide variety of industrial and consumer devices. This includes simple special purpose devices like microwave ovens and remote controls , factory devices such as industrial robots and computer assisted design, but also in general purpose devices like personal computers and mobile devices such as smartphones. The Internet is run on computers and it connects millions of other computers. Since ancient times, simple manual devices like the abacus aided people in doing calculations. Early in the Industrial Revolution, some mechanical devices were built to automate long tedious tasks, such as guiding patterns for looms. More sophisticated electrical machines did specialized analog calculations in the early 20th century. The first digital electronic calculating machines were developed during World War II. The speed, power, and versatility of computers has increased continuously and dramatically since then. Conventionally, a modern computer consists of at least one processing element, typically a central processing unit (CPU), and some form of memory. The processing element carries out arithmetic and logical operations, and a sequencing and control unit can change the order of operations in response to stored information. Peripheral devices include input devices (keyboards, mice, joystick, etc.), output devices (monitor screens, printers, etc.), and input/output devices that perform both functions (e.g., the 2000s-era touchscreen). Peripheral devices allow information to be retrieved from an external source and they enable the result of operations to be saved and retrieved.- source = Wekipeda

The central processing unit (CPU, occasionally central processor unit) is the hardware within a computer system which carries out the instructions of a computer program by performing the basic arithmetical, logical, and input/output operations of the system. The term has been in use in the computer industry at least since the early 1960s. The form, design, and implementation of CPUs have changed over the course of their history, but their fundamental operation remains much the same. A computer as shown below performs basically five major operations or functions irrespective of their size and make. These are 1) it accepts data or instructions by way of input, 2) it stores data, 3) it can process data as required by the user, 4) it gives results in the form of output, and 5) it controls all operations inside a computer. We discuss below each of these operations. 1. Input: In computing, an input device is any peripheral (piece of computer hardware equipment) used to provide data and control signals to an information processing system such as a computer or other information appliance. 2. Storage: Storage Devices are the data storage devices that are used in the computers to store the data. The computer has many types of data storage devices. Some of them can be classified as the removable data Storage Devices and the others as the non removable data Storage Devices. The memory is of two types; one is the primary memory and the other one is the secondary memory. The primary memory is the volatile memory and the secondary memory is the non volatile memory. The volatile memory is the kind of the memory that is erasable and the non volatile memory is the one where in the contents cannot be erased. Basically when we talk about the data storage devices it is generally assumed to be the secondary memory.

Releasing Windows 11, version 24H2 to the Release Preview Channel
- Windows Insider Program Team
Hello Windows Insiders!
Today, we are making this year’s annual feature update Windows 11, version 24H2 (Build 26100.712) available in the Release Preview Channel for customers to preview ahead of general availability later this calendar year.
Windows 11, version 24H2* includes a range of new features such as the HDR background support, energy saver, Sudo for Windows , Rust in the Windows kernel, support for Wi-Fi 7, voice clarity and more. It also includes many improvements across Windows. For example, we are introducing a scrollable view of the quick settings flyout from the taskbar, the ability to create 7-zip and TAR archives in File Explorer (in addition to ZIP), and improvements for connecting Bluetooth® Low Energy Audio devices. We will be sharing more details in the coming months on many of the new features and improvements included as part of Windows 11, version 24H2 leading up to general availability. Please note that the new AI features such as Recall announced earlier this week will not be available on your PC after installing this update today as they require a Copilot+ PC. For more information on those new AI features and Copilot+ PCs, see this blog post here .
As part of this update, we’re also evolving the Copilot** experience on Windows as an app that will be pinned to the taskbar. This enables users to get the benefits of a traditional app experience, including the ability to resize, move, and snap the window – feedback we’ve heard from users throughout the preview of Copilot in Windows. This model also allows Microsoft to more agilely develop and optimize the experience based on user feedback. This change will be making is way to Insiders in the Canary, Dev, and Beta Channels shortly.
Windows Insiders in the Release Preview Channel can install Windows 11, version 24H2 via our “seeker” experience in Windows Update. This means if you are an Insider currently in the Release Preview Channel on a PC that meets the Windows 11 hardware requirements , you can go to Settings and Windows Update and choose to download and install Windows 11, version 24H2 if you want. Once you update your PC to Windows 11, version 24H2, you will continue to automatically receive new servicing updates through Windows Update (the typical monthly update process). For instructions on how to join the Windows Insider Program and join your PC to the Release Preview Channel, click here .
PLEASE NOTE: Windows Insiders in the Canary and Dev Channels will not be able to switch to the Release Preview Channel as they are on builds already based on Windows 11, version 24H2 but are on higher build numbers. These Insiders don’t need to switch.
Commercial*** customers enrolled in the Windows Insider Program for Business can begin validating Windows 11, version 24H2 on PCs in their organizations. For these customers, the Windows 11, version 24H2 feature update is available through Windows Update for Business (WUfB) and Windows Server Update Service (WSUS). Azure Marketplace will be coming soon. You can learn more about deploying pre-release feature updates using these deployment methods here . Should any issues arise, IT admins in organizations deploying Release Preview updates can request Microsoft Support .
And finally – ISOs are now available for download for Windows 11, version 24H2 via the Windows Insider ISO download page .
Thanks, Windows Insider Program Team
*Please note that Cortana, Tips, and WordPad are removed after upgrading to Windows 11, version 24H2. These apps are deprecated .
**Copilot in Windows is being rolled out gradually to Windows Insiders across our global markets. Customers in the European Economic Area will be able to download the Copilot in Windows experience as an app from the Microsoft Store (coming soon).
***We consider a device a commercial device if it is not running the Windows 11 Home edition AND is being managed by an IT administrator (whether via Microsoft Endpoint Manager or other management solution) or has a volume license key or commercial ID or is joined to a domain.

The 2024 Computers, Privacy and Data Protection (CPDP) conference taking place in Brusselson 22-24 May, featured a presentation from Simona Demkova of the Europa Institute at Leiden University. Simona spoke on a panel that explored the intricate balance between innovation and fundamental rights in the burgeoning field of Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Her presentation delved into the procedural aspects of EU digital policy, specifically examining the relationship between procedural safeguards for automated decision-making under the EU’s AI Act and the established rights of good administration and judicial protection under EU law. This research forms part of her ongoing project funded by the Leiden University Starting Grant, titled “EU’s Human-Centred Digital Transformation.”
The panel addressed vital questions such as: Can privacy-preserving technology effectively uphold fundamental rights? How can regulatory bodies reconcile these rights with the rapid progression of AI? What roles do technology play as regulatory factors? What remedies are currently available?
Alongside Simona were renowned speakers Michèle Finck from University of Tübingen , Andreea Serban from the Future of Privacy Forum, and Marco Bassini (Tilburg University), with Giovanni De Gregorio (from Católica Global School of Law) moderating. The panel was supported by the ENCRYPT project of Tilburg University, focusing on the role of privacy preserving technologies as a tool for compliance.

Types of Computers By Mrs. Gonzales
Categories of computers • These include: 1) Personal computers2) Laptops3) Minicomputers4) Mainframes 5) Supercomputers6) Tablet PC7) Electronic organizers and palmtop computers 8) Embedded computers
Personal Computers Personal computers (PCs), also sometimes called micro computer, are the most common type of computer. PCs are designed to be used by one person at a time and fit on an office desk, hence the other name, ‘desktop computers’. A PC consists of a system unit, a keyboard, a mouse and a display screen. It has all the functional elements found in any larger systems. It is designed to perform the input, control, arithmetic/logic, output and storage functions just like any other computer system would do. It can execute software program instructions to perform a very wide variety of tasks.
Laptops A laptop computer is portable version of a PC, equipped with a flat liquid crystal display (LCD) screen and weighing about 1 - 4 Kg. The two principle types of laptop computers are notebooks and sub-notebooks. Notebooks weigh 2 – 4 Kg and is roughly 35 x 25 x 4 in size. They have fairly large LCD colour screen and a fairly large keyboard, usually with a small touch-sensitive pad which serves as a mouse. They are usually just as powerful as a desktop PC but cost more than their equivalent desktop PC.
Laptops A sub-notebook computer weighs about ½ Kg and can fit in a large jacket pocket. It has a small screen, sometimes in colour, and a small keyboard without the mouse function. It can perform many of the functions of notebooks, but not to the same degree of complexity.
Minicomputers Mini systems were usually designed to handle simultaneously the processing needs of multiple users. They allowed many users to share access to central hardware through stations called terminals . Minis can support dozens of terminals. A typical terminal has a keyboard, a display screen and a wire that connects the terminal to the computer system. Minicomputers were mainly used in small manufacturing plants, research labs and businesses.
Mainframes Mainframes are very powerful computers and are therefore very expensive. Mainframes are systems that offer faster processing speeds and greater storage capacity than a typical mini. A mainframe can handle more than a thousand users at a time. They are found in large organizations such as banks, government agencies, insurance companies and corporations where they perform tasks that require a lot of computational power; typically, bulk data processing such as censuses, industry/consumer statistics and bank transaction processing. The IBM zSeries 990 Model D32 is currently one of the most powerful mainframe computers available.
Supercomputers Supercomputers such as NEC’s Earth Simulator and California Digital Corporation’s Intel Itanium2 Tiger4 were two of the largest, fastest and most powerful computers in the year 2004. They are typically used for ‘number crunching’ in scientific simulations, scientific research and developments in areas such as energy, space exploration , medicine and industry. Supercomputers are designed to process complex scientific applications. These systems are the most expensive computers in the world, often costing millions of dollars.
Tablet PC A tablet PC is a computer that looks like a notebook computer except that data can be entered through the use of a keyboard, touch screen or a digitizing tablet. Data can be entered through the digitizing tablet with the use of a special pen called a stylus.
Electronic organizers and palmtop computers These are so called because they can fit in the palm of your hand and are therefore less powerful than notebooks and sub-notebooks. They can fit into a shirt pocket and weigh perhaps 300 grams on average. They might have a very small keyboard, or a palm-sized screen (sometimes in colour) which can be written on with a special pen. Electronic organizers are mainly used to store appointments, addresses, phone numbers and ‘to do’ lists. Palmtop computers are more powerful than electronic organizers and can even run some of the same software as notebooks and sub-notebooks. Some cellular phones are now powerful enough to act as very small personal organizers.
Embedded computers An embedded computer is a special-purpose computer used inside a device and is usually dedicated to specific functions. It is housed on a single microprocessor board with the programs stored in ROM. It is connected to sensors – devices which detect changes in the environment such as light, temperature or pressure – and actuators, hardware output devices that convert electrical control signal into physical action. They are commonly used in items such as washing machines, cameras, cars, motors, sewing machines, clocks and microwaves.
