What is text to speech

Text to speech, also known as TTS, read aloud, or even speech synthesis . It simply means using artificial intelligence to read words aloud be; it from a PDF , email, docs, or any website. There isn’t a voice artist recording phrases or words, or even the entire article. Speech generation is done on-the-fly, in real time, with natural sounding AI voices.

And that’s the beauty of it all. You don’t have to wait. You simply press play and artificial intelligence makes the words come alive instantly, in a very natural sounding voice. You can change voices and accents across multiple languages.

Listen to any article. Easily scan any printed material and convert the image to audio.

With Speechify’s API, we can offer our users a new and accessible way to consume our content. We’ve seen that readers who choose to listen to articles with Speechify are on average 20% more engaged than users who choose not to listen.

Susy Botello

Thanks for sharing this.I love this feature. I just tweeted at you on how much I like it. The voice is great and not at all like the text-to-speech I am used to listening to. I am a podcaster and I think this will help a lot of people multitask a bit, especially if they are interrupted with incoming emails or whatever. You can read-along but continue reading if your eyes need to go elsewhere. Hope you keep this. It’s already in other web publications. I also see it in some news sites. So I think it could become a standard that readers expect when they read online. Can I vote twice?

Renato Vargas

I just started using Medium more and I absolutely love this feature. I’ve listened to my own stories and the Al does the inflections just as I would. Many complain that they can’t read their own stories, but let’s be honest. How many stories would go without an audio version if you had to do all of them yourself? I certainly appreciate it. Thanks for this!!

Oh! How cool – I love it 🙂 The voice is surprisingly natural sounding! My eyes took a much appreciated rest for a bit. I’ve been a long time subscriber to Audible on Amazon. I think this is Great 🙂 Thank you!

Paola Rios Schaaf

Super excited about this! We are all spending too much time staring at our screens. Using another sense to take in the great content at Medium is awesome.

Hi Warren, I am one of those small, randomly selected people, and I ABSOLUTELY love this feature. I have consumed more ideas than I ever have on Medium. And also as a non-native English speaker, this is really helping me to improve my pronunciation. Keep this forevermore! Love, Ananya:)

This is the single most important feature you can role out for me. I simply don’t have the time to read all the articles I would like to on Medium. If I could listen to the articles I could consume at least 3X the amount of Medium content I do now.

Andrew Picken

Love this feature Warren. I use it when I’m reading, helps me churn through reading and also stay focused on the article (at a good speed) when my willpower is low! Keeping me more engaged..

I was THRILLED the other day when I saw the audio option. I didn’t know how it got there, but I pressed play, and then I was blown away hearing the words that I wrote being narrated

Neeramitra Reddy

LOVE THISSS. As someone who loves audio almost as much as reading, this is absolute gold

What is text to speech (TTS)?

Text-to-speech goes by a few names. Some refer to it as TTS,  read aloud , or even speech synthesis ; for the more engineered name. Today, it simply means using  artificial intelligence  to read words aloud be; it from a PDF, email, docs, or any website. Instantly turn text into audio. Listen in English, Italian, Portuguese,  Spanish , or more and choose your accent and character to personalize your experience.

How does AI text to speech work?

Beautifully. Speech synthesis works by installing an app like Speechify either on your device or as a browser extension. AI scans the words on the page and  reads it out loud , without any lag. You can change the default voice to a custom voice, change accents, languages, and even increase or decrease the speaking rate.

AI has made significant progress in synthesizing voices. It can pick up on formatted text and change tone accordingly. Gone are the days where the voices sounded  robotic . Speechify is revolutionizing that.

Once you install the TTS mobile app, you can easily convert text to speech from any website within your browser, read aloud your email, and more. If you install it as a  browser extension , you can do just the same on your laptop. The web version is OS agnostic. Mac or Windows, no problem.

What is the text-to-speech service?

A text-to-speech service is a tool, like Speechify text to speech, that transforms your written words into spoken words. Imagine typing out a message and having it read out loud by a digital voice – that’s what TTS services, like Speechify TTS do.

What are the benefits of text to speech?

TTS technology offers many benefits, like helping those with reading difficulties, providing rest for your eyes, multitasking by listening to content, improving pronunciation and language learning, and making content accessible to a wider audience.

How is Speechify TTS better than Murf AI text to speech, Google Voice, or TTSReader?

Speechify TTS stands out by offering a more natural and human-like voice quality, a wider range of customization options, and user-friendly integration across devices. Plus, our dedication to accessibility means that we ensure a seamless and inclusive experience for all users.

Free text to speech tool

How to use our text to speech (tts) tool.

A text-to-speech reader has the function of reading out loud any text you input. Our tool can read text in over 50 languages and even offers multiple text-to-speech voices for a few widely spoken languages such as English.

  • Step #1 : Write or paste your text in the input box. You also have the option of uploading a txt file.
  • Step #2 : Choose your desired language and speaker. You can try out different speakers if there are more available and choose the one you prefer.
  • Step #3 : Choose the speed of reading. You can set up the text to be read out loud faster or slower than the default.
  • Step #4 : Choose the font for the text. We recommend a smaller font if you have a large text and want to avoid scrolling, or a bigger font to follow the text while easily read aloud.
  • Step #5 : Tick the “I’m not a robot” checkbox in the bottom right of the screen.
  • Step #6 : Press the play button on the bottom of the text box to hear your text read out loud.
  • Step #7 : Get a share link for the resulting audio file or download it as an mp3. Our tool generates high quality TTS that is easy to understand by everyone.

Choose from 50 languages

Our free text to speech tool offers various languages and natural sounding voices to choose from. We made an effort to make our TTS reader available for as many people as possible by including the most commonly spoken languages worldwide.

We have languages available for the following regions:

  • Middle East
  • South-East Asia
  • Middle Asia (India)
  • North America

Benefits of using text to speech

TTS is widely used as assistive technology that helps people with reading and visual impairments understand a text. For example:

  • Visually impaired individuals greatly benefit from having a program read texts out loud to them.
  • Dyslexic individuals will also benefit from a text to talk reader because they can understand texts more easily.
  • Children with reading impairments can use text readers to understand lessons easier.
  • A text to voice tool is also of great help for people with severe speech impairments. Our web browser TTS tool allows them to type what they want to say and instantly play the audio to the person they wish to communicate with.

Other benefits of reading text aloud:

  • People learning or communicating in non-native languages can use text to speech as a tool for learning how to spell words correctly and express themselves fluently in their desired language. It’s beneficial when traveling to a country where that language is spoken, and one wants to communicate with locals in their native language.
  • Younger people in multilingual families might find it challenging to communicate with grandparents who still reside in their native countries. Text to speech can bridge the linguistic gap and help strengthen family bonds.
  • Muti-taskers and busy people, in general, can use text to speech online to get the latest news.

What is text to speech?

Text to speech is a tool or program that takes text or words input by the user and reads them out loud. It’s used as an assistive technology for people with reading, visual and speech impairments and as a productivity tool.

How does text to speech work?

Text to speech tools use speech synthesis to read texts out loud. The simplest form of speech synthesis uses snippets of human speech to deliver a coherent and natural-sounding message. These snippets are taken from vast libraries of human sounds, words, phrases etc., and they can be used to verbalize almost anything digitally.

Voice   Generator

This web app allows you to generate voice audio from text - no login needed, and it's completely free! It uses your browser's built-in voice synthesis technology, and so the voices will differ depending on the browser that you're using. You can download the audio as a file, but note that the downloaded voices may be different to your browser's voices because they are downloaded from an external text-to-speech server. If you don't like the externally-downloaded voice, you can use a recording app on your device to record the "system" or "internal" sound while you're playing the generated voice audio.

Want more voices? You can download the generated audio and then use voicechanger.io to add effects to the voice. For example, you can make the voice sound more robotic, or like a giant ogre, or an evil demon. You can even use it to reverse the generated audio, randomly distort the speed of the voice throughout the audio, add a scary ghost effect, or add an "anonymous hacker" effect to it.

Note: If the list of available text-to-speech voices is small, or all the voices sound the same, then you may need to install text-to-speech voices on your device. Many operating systems (including some versions of Android, for example) only come with one voice by default, and the others need to be downloaded in your device's settings. If you don't know how to install more voices, and you can't find a tutorial online, you can try downloading the audio with the download button instead. As mentioned above, the downloaded audio uses external voices which may be different to your device's local ones.

You're free to use the generated voices for any purpose - no attribution needed. You could use this website as a free voice over generator for narrating your videos in cases where don't want to use your real voice. You can also adjust the pitch of the voice to make it sound younger/older, and you can even adjust the rate/speed of the generated speech, so you can create a fast-talking high-pitched chipmunk voice if you want to.

Note: If you have offline-compatible voices installed on your device (check your system Text-To-Speech settings), then this web app works offline! Find the "add to homescreen" or "install" button in your browser to add a shortcut to this app in your home screen. And note that if you don't have an internet connection, or if for some reason the voice audio download isn't working for you, you can also use a recording app that records your devices "internal" or "system" sound.

Report: soros pumps $81m to censor election speech online.

By Michael Katz    |   Wednesday, 15 May 2024 08:46 PM EDT

A media group funded by billionaire leftist George Soros is seeking to implement a global plan to pressure Big Tech social media platforms to censor more content before November's presidential election.

The group called Free Press is leading the charge to restrict free speech online, the Media Research Center reported Tuesday. MRC described Free Press — not to be confused with The Free Press media outlet helmed by former New York Times editor Bari Weiss — as an activist organization disguised as a journalism operation that uses its sizable resources to push the federal government and Big Tech to silence conservative speech.

Free Press, which MRC said claimed responsibility for helping to get former President Donald Trump banned from Twitter, bragged in a news release about a letter sent by a coalition of more than 200 "civil-society organizations, researchers, and journalists" to the heads of Big Tech companies such as Google, Instagram, Discord, X, and TikTok. In it, the groups called for the companies to reduce "interventions necessary to keep online platforms" allegedly "safe and healthy" and demanded "swift action" to protect "democracy."

MRC said its research unveiled that Soros packed the coffers of at least 45 of the signatories with $80.7 million combined between 2016 and 2022.

The letter attempted to justify that it was written with reducing "real-world harms" and "the rise of extremism and violent attempts to overthrow democratic governments." But it appears its true design was to pressure Big Tech companies to silence speech the left despises as 60 countries across the globe gear up for elections in 2024, the MRC reported.

"Even more disturbing was the letter's implication that its primary target is interfering in the 2024 U.S. election," the MRC reported. "This development is directly in line with Soros' brand, of which he has dedicated millions of his ungodly fortune to groups looking to interfere in elections by stifling online speech."

The letter made six demands of the Big Tech companies, the first of which called for investment "in greater platform integrity by reinstating election-integrity policies, inclusive of moderating content around the Big Lie," defined by co-signatory Brennan Center for Justice, which has received funding from Soros, as the idea the 2020 election was stolen from Trump.

The MRC reported the signatory that received the most Soros funding was Global Witness, which MRC said is on record for pressuring Facebook and TikTok to increase censorship operations before the 2022 midterm elections. Global Witness hauled in $20.3 million from Soros between 2016 and 2022, the MRC said.

Strategic Dialogue, another signatory that received $3.1 million from Soros between 2017 and 2022, was recently exposed by a House Judiciary Committee investigation for co-authoring a "hate groups" blacklist with the Soros-funded Global Disinformation Index targeting "conservative" and faith-based organizations, the MRC said.

"The fact that Free Press is at the tip of this Soros-tied spear should concern every American," the MRC said. "Free Press' obsession with censorship and gaining control of the Internet cannot be overstated.

"This is the same group that boasted how it was 'involved in direct talks that pressured Google and Amazon' to boot the 'dangerous' pro-free speech platform Parler from their platforms because of so-called 'election lies.'"

Liberal billionaire George Soros has spent $80 million to 'silence' Americans, Media Research Center says

FIRST ON FOX – Free Press, a media group financed by liberal billionaire George Soros , "is looking to incorporate global pressure to push Big Tech platforms to juice their censorship operations before the 2024 U.S. presidential election," according to the Media Research Center.

Free Press bills itself as an organization that "closely watches as the decisions shaping the media landscape are made and sounds the alarm when people’s rights to connect and communicate are in danger." However, in a new report, the conservative MRC found that Soros gave over $80 million to affiliated groups calling for "censorship" ahead of November’s critical election.

"One of the wealthiest men in the world is using his vast wealth and power to silence regular Americans ahead of the 2024 election. At a time when defending free speech is key, leftists are trying their best to shut down the voices of half of America, especially those who disagree with the radical agenda promoted by Biden, Soros and most Big Tech executives," MRC Free Speech America vice president Dan Schneider told Fox News Digital .

GEORGE SOROS HANDED EMPIRE TO SON, ALEX, WHO IS ‘MORE RADICAL’ LEFTIST, ACCORDING TO STUDY OF PAST RHETORIC

MRC associate editor Joseph Vazquez reported the Soros-funded media group "is at the helm of a new push to restrict free speech online," pointing to a recent press release as evidence.

Last month, Free Press boasted about a letter urging executives at Discord, Google, Instagram, Meta, Pinterest, Reddit, Rumble, Snap, TikTok, Twitch, Twitter and YouTube to keep online platforms "safe and healthy" in 2024 through six specific "interventions."

READ ON THE FOX BUSINESS APP

The letter was signed by "200 civil-society organizations, researchers and journalists," according to Free Press. The MRC found that "at least 45 of the signatories have had their coffers packed with Soros cash to the tune of a whopping $80,757,329 between 2016 and 2022 alone."

"The document attempted to justify that it was written with reducing ‘real-world harms’ and ‘the rise of extremism and violent attempts to overthrow democratic governments’ in mind. However, it appears its true design is to pressure Big Tech companies to silence speech the left despises as 60 countries across the globe gear up for their elections in 2024," Vazquez wrote.

ALEX SOROS HUDDLED WITH TOP DEMOCRATS SHORTLY AFTER TAKING OVER HIS FATHER'S NONPROFIT EMPIRE

"But even more disturbing was the letter’s implication that its primary target is interfering in the 2024 U.S. election," Vazquez continued. "This development is directly in line with Soros’ brand, who has dedicated millions of his ungodly fortune to groups looking to interfere in elections by stifling online speech."

The letter asked tech companies to reinstate "election-integrity policies," "swiftly enforce rules against election lies and hate in political advertising," "require disclosure of AI-generated political content," "place greater friction to reduce the visibility and easy distribution of election-related content that has been flagged and is awaiting review," "hold influencer, public figure and political candidate accounts to the same moderation and enforcement standards as everyone else," and "improve transparency and enable civil-society oversight of enforcement practices by regularly sharing virality and enforcement reports."

Vazquez wrote that the "explicit push for speech controls is especially disturbing in light of the stated vision of one of Free Press’s founders," noting that Free Press co-founder Robert W. McChesney once wrote in 2000, "Our job is to make media reform part of our broader struggle for democracy, social justice, and, dare we say it, socialism."

The MRC then dove into who signed the letter and how they receive financial support.

"The signatory that received the most Soros funding in MRC’s tally was none other than the climate change-obsessed Global Witness, which is already on record pressuring Facebook and TikTok to increase censorship operations before the 2022 midterm elections," Vazquez wrote.

"The Soros empire funded the group with a massive $20,338,270 between 2016 and 2022," he continued. "The group’s ‘digital threats’ campaign, for example, is specifically focused on pressuring governments to regulate speech on social media."

GEORGE SOROS' SON BECOMES KINGMAKER WITH TOP DEMS AS HE MAKES MULTIPLE WH VISITS, MEETS WITH LAWMAKERS

The MRC also found that the Institute for Strategic Dialogue, another signee, received over $3 million from Soros between 2017 and 2022.

"The leftist group was recently exposed in a House Judiciary Committee investigation for co-authoring a ‘hate groups’ blacklist with the Soros-funded Global Disinformation Index (GDI) targeting ‘conservative’ and faith-based organizations. This list was later disseminated by law enforcement to several financial institutions," Vazquez wrote.

"The fact that Free Press is at the tip of this Soros-tied spear should concern every American," he continued. "Free Press’s obsession with censorship and gaining control of the Internet cannot be overstated."

The MRC noted that Free Press previously "celebrated how it was also responsible for influencing the Obama-era FCC into adopting draconian ‘Net Neutrality’ rules that arbitrarily sanctioned massive government regulation of the Internet," and "praised how the FCC reportedly cited the Soros-funded organization ‘close to 70 times’ in its final order on the matter."

"Americans beware. The Soros network is coming after your free speech just in time for the U.S. elections — again," Vazquez wrote.

Free Press did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The Institute for Strategic Dialogue and Global Witness also did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Chiefs kicker Butker congratulates women graduates and says most are more excited about motherhood

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The commencement speaker at Kansas’ Benedictine College , a private Catholic liberal arts school, congratulated the women receiving degrees — and said most of them were probably more excited about getting married and having children.

Harrison Butker, the kicker for the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs, is getting attention for those and other comments last weekend in which he said some Catholic leaders were “pushing dangerous gender ideologies onto the youth of America.”

Butker, who’s made his conservative Catholic beliefs well known, also assailed Pride month , a particularly important time for the LGBTQ+ rights movement, and President Joe Biden’s stance on abortion.

“I think it is you, the women, who have had the most diabolical lies told to you,” Butker said.

A Super Bowl champion kicker is in hot water after comments he made during a college commencement speech. Correspondent Gethin Coolbaugh reports.

“Some of you may go on to lead successful careers in the world, but I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world. I can tell you that my beautiful wife Isabelle would be the first to say that her life truly started when she started living her vocation as a wife and as a mother,” he said.

Butker said that his wife embraced “one of the most important titles of all. Homemaker.“

“Harrison Butker gave a speech in his personal capacity,” NFL senior vice president and chief diversity and inclusion officer Jonathan Beane said in a statement. “His views are not those of the NFL as an organization. The NFL is steadfast in our commitment to inclusion, which only makes our league stronger.”

Butker also criticized as disparaging to the Catholic Church an article by The Associated Press highlighting a shift toward conservativism in some parts of the church.

The three-time Super Bowl champion delivered his roughly 20-minute address Saturday at the Catholic private liberal arts school in Atchison, Kansas, which is located about 60 miles (97 kilometers) miles north of Kansas City. He received a standing ovation from graduates and other attendees.

Butker, 28, referred to a “deadly sin sort of pride that has a month dedicated to it” in an oblique reference to Pride month. Butker also took aim at Biden’s policies, including his condemnation of the Supreme Court’s reversal of the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision and advocacy for freedom of choice — a key campaign issue in the 2024 presidential race.

Biden, who is Catholic, has a fraught history on the issue. He initially opposed the Roe v. Wade decision, saying it went too far . He also opposed federal funding for abortions and supported restrictions on abortions later in pregnancy.

Butker also tackled Biden’s response to COVID-19, which has killed nearly 1.2 million people in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“While COVID might have played a large role throughout your formative years, it is not unique,” he said. “Bad policies and poor leadership have negatively impacted major life issues. Things like abortion, IVF, surrogacy, euthanasia, as well as a growing support for degenerate cultural values and media all stem from pervasiveness of disorder.”

Graduates had mixed views on the speech. ValerieAnne Volpe, 20, who graduated with an art degree, lauded Butker for saying things that “people are scared to say.”

“You can just hear that he loves his wife. You can hear that he loves his family,” she said.

Elle Wilbers, 22, who is heading to medical school, said she was shocked by Butker’s criticism of priests and bishops and his reference to the LGBTQ+ community, one that she described as “horrible.”

“We should have compassion for the people who have been told all their life that the person they love is like, it’s not OK to love that person,” Wilbers said.

Kassidy Neuner, 22, who will spend a gap year teaching before going to law school, said being a stay-at-home parent is “a wonderful decision.”

“And it’s also not for everybody,” Neuner added, saying, “I think that he should have addressed more that it’s not always an option. And, if it is your option in life, that’s amazing for you. But there’s also the option to be a mother and a career woman.”

The Chiefs declined to comment on Butker’s commencement address.

The 2017 seventh-round pick out of Georgia Tech has become of the NFL’s best kickers, breaking the Chiefs’ franchise record with a 62-yard field goal in 2022. Butker helped them win their first Super Bowl in 50 years in 2020, added a second Lombardi Trophy in 2023, and he kicked the field goal that forced overtime in a Super Bowl win over San Francisco in February.

It has been an embarrassing offseason for the Chiefs, though.

Last month, voters in Jackson County, Missouri, soundly rejected a ballot initiative that would have helped pay for an $800 million renovation to Arrowhead Stadium, home of the Chiefs. Many voters criticized the plan put forward by the Chiefs as catering primarily to VIPs and the wealthy.

The same week, wide receiver Rashee Rice turned himself in to Dallas police on multiple charges, including aggravated assault, after he was involved in a high-speed crash that left four people with injuries. Rice has acknowledged being the driver of one of the sports cars that was going in excess of 100 mph (160 kph).

Last week, law enforcement officials told The Dallas Morning News that Rice also was suspected of assaulting a person at a downtown nightclub. Dallas police did not name Rice as the suspect in detailing a report to The Associated Press.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid said he had spoken to the receiver and the team was letting the legal process play out.

Associated Press writer Heather Hollingsworth in Mission, Kansas, contributed to this story.

The World Health Organization’s pandemic plan won’t end free speech

If your time is short.

A draft of the World Health Organization’s pandemic accord says that the document will be used with respect to individual’s personal freedoms.

An expert told PolitiFact that the accord could neither change nor supersede the U.S. Constitution.

As the world emerged from a global pandemic, the World Health Organization began drafting a legal agreement to respond to future pandemics. Since then, the document has been a target of misinformation.

The WHO’s pandemic prevention, preparedness and response accord is a legal agreement the organization’s 194 member states, including the U.S., are negotiating to help prevent and better prepare for future pandemics.

In a clip from former Fox News anchor Tucker Carlson’s web show, author Bret Weinstein warned the WHO’s actions with regard to the accord could strip Americans of their constitutionally protected rights to free speech.

"So, you’re saying that an international health organization could just end the First Amendment?" Carlson asked Weinstein in the clip, which circulated Jan. 28 in an Instagram video and was attracting comments and interactions in late April.

"The ability to do it is currently under discussion at the international level," replied Weinstein, whose COVID-19 claims PolitiFact has previously fact - checked.

The Instagram post was flagged as part of Meta’s efforts to combat false news and misinformation on its News Feed. (Read more about our partnership with Meta , which owns Facebook and Instagram.)

The clip came from a video published Jan. 5 on the subscription-based Tucker Carlson Network website. The network also shared a longer clip of this portion of the video on its YouTube page .

The longer version shows a fuller exchange:

Carlson: "So, you’re saying that an international health organization could just end the First Amendment?"

Weinstein: "Yes, and I know it sounds preposterous — "

Carlson: "It does not sound preposterous." Weinstein: "The ability to do it is currently under discussion at the international level."

Weinstein later said the WHO’s pandemic preparedness plan will be used to silence podcasters and eliminate " national and personal sovereignty ." Weinstein did not respond to PolitiFact’s request for comment.

But his assertion that the WHO’s work on this plan could eliminate Americans’ free speech  protections is contradicted by the U.S. Constitution and the draft accord itself.

A March 28 WHO press release said the pandemic agreement’s draft will continue to be refined ahead of the World Health Assembly , set for May 27 to June 1 in Geneva, Switzerland. An April draft of the plan explicitly stated that the plan’s implementation will be with "full respect for the dignity, human rights and fundamental freedoms of persons" and that states have the sovereign right" to "adopt, legislate and implement legislation."

World Health Organization information also details that the governments themselves would determine the accord, with member states deciding the terms.

Lawrence Gostin, director of Georgetown University’s O’Neill Institute for National and Global Health Law, told PolitiFact that the pandemic accord contains no provision that would override any U.S. law.

"The Pandemic Agreement would not control what could or could not be written or said in the United States," Gostin said. "The regulation of speech, including online content, is entirely within the realm of the US Congress." He added that there is a domestic process for amending the constitution.

The process of changing the U.S. Constitution is lengthy . To eliminate the First Amendment, Congress would have to propose the change with a majority vote in both the House of Representatives and the Senate. An amendment can also be proposed during a constitutional convention called for by two-thirds of the state legislatures . For the amendment to be adopted, three-fourths of the states in the U.S would have to ratify it.

We rate the claim that the World Health Organization could "end the first amendment" False.

Pro-Palestinian or not, we must protect people’s right to peacefully protest | Opinion

Videos of protesters being beaten, tear-gassed and aggressively arrested across the county have been going viral on social media.

No matter your take on the pro-Palestinian protests at college campuses across the country, including at UW-Madison and UW-Milwaukee , something we should all be able to agree on is the need to protect people’s right to peacefully protest and fight against disenfranchisement.

Videos of protesters being beaten, tear-gassed and aggressively arrested have been going viral on social media. Often, those arrested aren’t charged with a crime. Imagine being violently arrested then being released and left with mental, and sometimes physical, trauma?

There are many examples of peaceful pro-Palestinian protesters' First Amendment rights being violated. At UW-Madison, police took a violent approach to taking down encampments, entering when they knew protesters were asleep in their tents, defenseless.

As protesters began to link arms, officers pulled out their riot batons, beat students, and hit people in the head with their shields. UW-Madison spokesperson Marc Lovicott said the scene "got a little tense," undermining the violence inflicted on students. Prioritizing upholding a "tenting policy" over the physical safety of their students is inhumane.

Professors have supported free speech, been aggressively arrested

This violence is not only being inflicted upon students, but also professors supporting their First Amendment rights. UW-Madison professor Samer Alatout was pinned to the ground by police, speaking to the press with dried blood on his head. Like many others, he received a citation and was released, but was presumably left with the trauma.

Conservation conversation: Why are taxpayers restoring an elk herd only to have hunters kill them off?

Other examples include a professor at the Emery University in Atlanta being thrown to the ground by a police officer, begging officers to not slam her head into the concrete. At that same university, a video of a student protester being tasered while already detained goes viral on X.

When people are not issued citations or charged with a crime, the arrests are more a statement for the public. This is a problem because it sends a message that our right to protest is at risk, putting one of the most important rights in our Constitution in jeopardy.

President Biden said on the issue “we are not an authoritarian nation where we silence people or squash dissent,” but he continued, “order must prevail.” He went on to say, “violent protest is not protected – peaceful protest is.”

When peaceful protesters are silenced, free speech is meaningless

Fair enough. But what happens when the protest is peaceful, and people are wrongfully arrested? To argue that these students simply protesting on campus is violent because they are “trespassing” is ridiculous. These campuses are often their homes, thus if they can’t protest there, then where?

While there have been incidents of antisemitism on many of the campuses where protests are taking place, many Jewish students are making it known that many of the protests themselves are not anti-Jewish. In fact, some of the pro-Palestinian demonstrators are Jewish themselves.

Antisemitic and racist protests and rallies have been happening (and increasing) in this county for years. Neo-Nazi groups have publicly called America a white, Christian nation. Yet these rallies and have seen little to no police intervention, even with protesters armed and chanting violent phrases. Their right to protest remains protected, so why isn't this true for these students?

Just last year, the Neo-Nazi group ‘Blood Tribe’ marched through Madison with swastika flags, yelling racial slurs at pedestrians, yet police let them continue to protest peacefully.

According to the police, the neo-Nazi group demonstrated lawfully, and "Whether you believe that's what this group is doing or not, it's First Amendment rights," said Stephanie Fryer, Madison police spokeswoman.

Their right to protest remains protected, so why isn't this true for these students?

It's possible for students to protest on campus and not be met with violence from police. At Brown University, encampments were given extensions of their time allowed camping as protesters continued their discussions with administration. This allowed the protesters and the college to make a deal, ending the encampments and having the college vote on disinvestment. More colleges need to be like Brown and take a peaceful approach that centers on discussion rather than police intervention.

Risking our right to protest also risks the future of our country, with the act of protesting creating some of the best, most equitable practices in our history. Whether you are pro-Palestinian or not, you should care that people’s right to protest is at risk.
