Speech Language Pathology

speech language pathology

What is speech-language pathology? Speech-language pathologists focus on the assessment and treatment of a broad range of speech, language, voice, swallowing, and cognitive-communication impairments. Such impairments may result from structural or functional causes and may have developed over time or have resulted from stroke, head injury, or cancers of the head and neck.

Western University’s Speech-Language Pathology program is an international leader in the profession and has played important roles in the development of innovative language, speech, swallowing and voice therapies. Individualized learning happens through laboratory experiences and teaching clinics, and access to state-of-the-art teaching and research facilities. The School of Communication Sciences and Disorders is home to Canada's largest on-site speech and hearing clinic, the H.A. Leeper Speech and Hearing Clinic .

Program Information

The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) at Western Washington University offers a master’s degree program in speech-language pathology that is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA).

Speech-language pathology is a discipline which has developed out of a concern for people with communication disorders. Preparation leading to a degree in communication sciences and disorders includes a wide range of course work and a variety of clinical practicum opportunities working with the infant through geriatric populations.

Students who intend to seek employment in this profession, whether in a public school, clinic, rehabilitation center or hospital setting, are advised that certification/licensure at the state and/or national levels is required. Out-of-state students should recognize that other requirements may exist for employment in different geographic locations.

The objectives of the program in Speech-Language Pathology are to prepare competent entry-level professionals in speech-language pathology and to prepare students for advanced study at the PhD level. The program includes an internship taken after other academic and clinical requirements have been completed.

Graduate students complete a two year course of study that includes academic classes as well as clinical practica. A master's degree is the entry level degree for practicing as a speech-language pathologist. The rigorous academic coursework and rich clinical experiences at WWU prepare our graduate students for meeting ASHA clinical certification standards and Washington State licensure and professional certification requirements.

Application Requirements

  • All applicants must complete the Graduate School's ApplyWeb  application  and pay the $100 application fee.
  • Within the application you will be prompted to  upload an unofficial transcript  from each institution attended. If admitted, you will be asked to provide official transcripts.
  • Additional application materials are specified below. Applications will not be forwarded to the department for review until  all required materials  have been received by the Graduate School.
  • International Applicants: Please  review the requirements  for information regarding Degree Equivalency, English Language Proficiency and student VISA requirements.

Additional Application Requirements

  • Please note: A degree in “Speech Science” or “Linguistics” is not an equivalent degree. If you do not have a background in speech pathology/audiology or communication disorders, contact the Program Adviser to determine your eligibility. Applicants who have an undergraduate degree in another discipline may meet this admission requirement by completing pre-requisite undergraduate coursework through WWU's  Post-Baccalaureate Program.
  • The CSD department suggests that at least 2 of the 3 letters of reference be from professors who can speak to your academic skills.
  • One-page resume, outlining educational background, awards, relevant employment and volunteer experiences

Submit a one-page statement describing your story. This is your opportunity to expand on your background, highlight unique experiences, challenges and triumphs, and illustrate how your experiences have shaped and supported your growth as a future speech-language pathologist.

Your statement will be read by a committee who will evaluate the content of your answer (e.g., how your experiences illustrate diversity, interpersonal skills, maturity, motivation, and stress management) and your writing ability (e.g., clarity, organization, writing mechanics).

Note: Diversity is not just limited to one’s religion, ethnicity, culture, language, or sexual orientation. It also includes elements of your identity that may distinguish you from others.

The objectives of the program in Speech-Language Pathology are to prepare competent entry-level professionals in speech-language pathology and to prepare students for advanced study at the PhD level. The program includes an internship taken after other academic and clinical requirements have been completed.

Prerequisites

Students must have completed an undergraduate major in Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) or an equivalent professional core curriculum. The BA or BS in Communication Sciences and Disorders (Speech Pathology and Audiology) must have been completed within the past eight years in order to be considered as an applicant for the graduate program in CSD. Grade point average requirements are consistent with those of the Graduate School.

Students who are not native speakers of English must demonstrate competence in written and spoken English. This can be done by submitting a satisfactory score on the international TOEFL, taken within one year of the date of application. A minimum composite score of 600 is required for the paper-based test; the scaled score for the computer-based test is 250; the Internet-based minimum score is 100. The TOEFL scores must be on file in the Graduate School prior to receipt of the application for graduate study.

ASHA Standards

IV-A: The applicant must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of biological sciences, physical sciences, statistics, and the social/behavioral sciences.

Implementation: The applicant must have transcript credit (which could include course work, advanced placement, CLEP, or examination of equivalency) for each of the following areas: biological sciences, physical sciences, social/behavioral sciences, and statistics. Appropriate course work may include human anatomy and physiology, neuroanatomy and neurophysiology, genetics, physics, inorganic and organic chemistry, psychology, sociology, and anthropology. The intent of this standard is to require students to have a broad liberal arts and science background. Courses in biological and physical sciences specifically related to communication sciences and disorders may not be applied for certification purposes in this category. In addition to transcript credit, applicants may be required by their graduate program to provide further evidence of meeting this requirement.

The Graduate Program Advisor will review the student’s transcript during the first quarter of graduate work and if any of the above course work needs to be completed, the student will be advised to do so, as an overload, before graduation.

Application Information

Enrollment is limited to 20 new graduate students per year.

Admit Quarter: Fall quarter only. The communication sciences and disorders program is a lock-step program which offers courses in sequence once a year beginning in the fall.

Deadline: Application deadline is January 15.

TA Deadline: Application deadline is January 15.

Supporting Materials:

❑ Application with $100 fee (subject to change) ❑ Three recent letters of reference ❑ One official transcript from every school attended (no more than two years old) ❑ One-page statement of purpose ❑ One-page résumé

Additional Information

Clinical competence.

In addition to meeting academic requirements, students specializing in speech-language pathology must demonstrate satisfactory competence in diagnostic and clinical practica. Refer to course description for additional information. No student in CSD may participate as a primary clinician in the clinic or an internship until cleared a criminal background check. Clearance is valid for specified time frames. Procedure and fee information are provided to students upon acceptance into the graduate program. At times, the requirements for the completion of clinical practicum courses may fall outside the regular University calendar. Contact the department for further details.

Students are permitted to retake a clinical practicum only once. If a satisfactory grade is not achieved in the retake, students will not be permitted to continue in the practicum courses.

Not everyone is suited to work with clients in the clinical fields of speech-language pathology and audiology even though the student may maintain a satisfactory academic record.

Per the Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA) for CSD programs, applicants for the Certification of Clinical Competence (CCC) in Speech-Language Pathology must demonstrate competency in all American Speech Language Hearing Association (ASHA)  knowledge and skills standards , CAA  professional practice competencies,  and CSD  essential functions . Opportunities to demonstrate competency are offered throughout the program during program activities and coursework (i.e., academic and clinical). Intervention is a program requirement when students do not demonstrate competency.

Competency in knowledge and skills related to the assessment and treatment of communication and swallowing disorders, and knowledge and skills applicable to ethical and professional practice is operationally defined as earning a “B” (83%) or higher in all academic courses and on all clinical and academic assignments that are linked to the ASHA 2020 certification standards. Students who fail to demonstrate competency in standards-linked knowledge and skills are required to participate in clinical and/or academic intervention, in compliance with CAA-ASHA accreditation requirements.

Students who fail to demonstrate competency in in knowledge and skills linked to ASHA Standards following clinical or academic intervention will be dismissed from the graduate program.

Students must maintain a GPA of “B” (83%) or higher to remain in the CSD program. An overall GPA below this level will result in dismissal from the program. If a student receives a course grade below 83%, they are required to participate in intervention. A second course grade below 83% will result in dismissal from the program. Students must earn a grade of 83% or higher on all major learning activities (e.g., exams, quarter projects, mid-quarter or final reviews, papers, etc.) within each course and maintain compliance with the professional practice competencies and CSD essential functions. If a student earns a major grade below 83% or demonstrates non-compliance with professional practice competencies and essential functions, they are required to participate in intervention. A student may receive no more than 6 major interventions for the duration of their graduate program. Students earning more than 6 major interventions may be dismissed from the program at the discretion of the SLP Program Director in consultation with the Graduate Curriculum Committee.

An internship is required for all CSD students. This experience provides an opportunity for each student to refine and expand basic clinical skills by participating in a supervised, full-time work experience in a professional setting. The terminal objective of this training phase is to facilitate each clinician’s transition from student in training to competent entry-level professional. As such, the internship is taken after other academic and clinical requirements have been completed with the exception of the research project. In addition to the required full-time internship (CSD 599), students also may choose to complete one or more part-time internships (CSD 598). Both the full-time and part-time placements require assignment to clinical settings off campus (e.g., schools, hospitals, private clinics, et cetera).

Accreditation

The master’s degree (MA) education program in speech-language pathology at Western Washington University is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, 2200 Research Boulevard #310, Rockville, Maryland 20850, 800-498-2071 or 301-296-5700.

The master’s degree (MA) education program in speech-language pathology also is accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education.

Professional Certification Requirements

Students completing the program will graduate with a Master's of Science in Communication Sciences and Disorders. With 100% Praxis pass rates and post-graduate employment, our program is highly competitive. We value the unique qualities of faculty, staff, and students in our program, and we strive to create a culture that embraces diversity, inclusion, equity, justice, and belonging. In that line, we serve a unique population in rural Appalachia, improving the communication and quality of life of our neighbors. Our program offers students a variety of clinical sites (e.g., skilled nursing facilities, hospitals, private practice, schools), and students may even have the opportunity to acquire unique placements nationally. (National and international service experiences are also returning to the table for discussion and planning.) We offer several internal scholarships, graduate assistantships, and tuition remissions for exceptional applicants. We believe strongly in the community we have created, and we hope you will consider WCU to earn your master's degree.

  • The numbers! Our students graduate on-time, they pass the Praxis, and they get jobs.
  • The cost! In-state students can finish this degree for around $25K, and out-of-state students can finish this degree for around $44K. With the financial support we can offer, it gets better. We have tuition remissions, scholarships, grants, and a lot of graduate assistantships. We support our students headed to conferences to present their research, and we write letters of recommendation for external scholarships and awards. WCU has no-questions-asked student emergency funds, and CSD collects donations of scrubs for short-term clinical placements.
  • The mountains! Your self-care starts as soon as you walk out of the building. The air and the views will already be a calming presence after a long day of classes or clinic. Give yourself the gift of this place during the two years you are doing something really tough.
  • The curriculum! Our graduate classes are offered on a Tuesday/Thursday schedule, so you can expect to be in the classroom from 8:30 to 3:45 on those days. The other three days are reserved for clinical placements. Our faculty and staff appreciate work-life balance, and hope to demonstrate that balance by not requiring much, if anything, in the evening hours.
  • The skills! You can graduate WCU with an additional certification as a Certified Dementia Practitioner! You can graduate WCU with advanced experience in ASD, AAC, and IPE! You can graduate as an experienced bilingual practitioner! You can graduate with experitise in literacy!

Amazing opportunities await you at WCU!

Information for International Applicants

Citizens of other countries, whose degrees are not from U.S. institutions, must have their transcripts and full course descriptions translated into English and evaluated by a recognized credential evaluation service such as World Education Services .

"Language proficiency is the ability to communicate accurately, effectively, and spontaneously in expressive (spoken and written) and receptive (listening and reading) modalities. Widely used tests of English language proficiency that assess skill in each of the four modalities of language (speaking, listening, reading, and writing) include the IELTS, which is based on English as a global language (including English used in North America, Britain, Australia, and New Zealand), and the TOEFL, based on American English." ( ASHA , retrieved on August 1, 2023)

According to ASHA's February 2019 Final Report from the Ad Hoc Committee on Language Proficiency , it has been recommended to require a minimum TOEFL Total Score of 105 with at least a 26 on the Speaking and Listening subtests and to require a minimum IELTS Total Score to 7.5, with at least a 7.5 on the Speaking and Listening segments.

HEALTHCARE CAREER GUIDES

Speech-Language Pathologist Career

What is a speech-language pathologist.

A speech-language pathologist specializes in treating various speech impediments and addressing language comprehension difficulties. They also teach social skills to people with developmental disabilities, provide guidance to individuals with cognitive disorders, and intervene when someone struggles to swallow food or beverages. For those who cannot hear well, speech-language pathologists teach skills for understanding others and expressing themselves through other means like picture boards or technological devices.

RESPONSIBILITIES

What does a speech-language pathologist do.

These professionals work to prevent, assess, diagnose, and treat speech, language, social communication, cognitive communication, and swallowing disorders in children and adults. If you have a passion for working one-on-one with individuals to give them the tools to improve their quality of life, then speech-language pathology can be a rewarding career. A speech-language pathologist can have several responsibilities and daily tasks. Some of them may include:

speech language pathology western

  • Evaluation and diagnosis.  Often, the first job of a speech-language pathologist is to evaluate individuals to determine a diagnosis. Discovering whether the person has speech, language, communication, or swallowing disorders, or a combination of these, is a crucial first step to determining a treatment plan.
  • Treating disorders.  Once disorders are diagnosed, speech-language pathologists can work on treating them. One method may work well for a child struggling to swallow, while a quite different one may serve an adult struggling with communication.
  • Providing training.  Speech pathologists have an important responsibility to train family members and caregivers to assist the individual in specific ways. An individual’s support group plays a key role in helping them improve.
  • Working with other professionals . It’s common for speech-language pathologists to work closely with an individual’s care team. This team may consist of school counselors, physicians, and others. Being skilled at working with these professionals to gain insight and provide the best care plan for each client is key.
  • Educating future pathologists.  Speech-language pathologists often train younger aspiring pathologists. They must be prepared for students who will shadow them and be willing to provide education and lectures if asked by local universities or interested groups.
  • Providing counseling.  Speech-language pathologists may provide guidance and exercises to improve speech in a counseling setting. In addition to assigning drills and tasks, they may provide support and counsel.
  • Running a clinic.  It’s common for speech-language pathologists to have their own clinic or private practice. Knowing what this entails and being on top of the aspects of running a business is important. Most clinics have office staff and accountants, so the speech-language pathologist whose clinic it is must be able to supervise them effectively.
  • Working with agencies.  Speech pathologists should maintain strong relationships with associations and government agencies that advocate for those with speech, language, and hearing impairments. One such agency is the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).
  • Supervising school programs.  Often, elementary schools will provide speech lessons for young students who are struggling with communication or pronunciation. Speech-language pathologists supervise these sessions and sometimes provide speech therapy themselves.
  • Conducting research.  Our understanding of speech disorders and the ways to treat them is expanding. Thanks to research carried out by speech-language pathologists, we discover new treatments and gain needed knowledge to improve care and enhance progress. As a speech-language pathologist, you should plan to keep up on the latest research and even engage in your own research.

EDUCATION & BEST DEGREES

How do i become a speech-language pathologist.

There are several steps to becoming a speech-language pathologist. Here is the typical path from speech-language pathologist schooling to fellowship and examination.

  • Earn a relevant bachelor’s degree. Prospective speech-language pathologists often pursue undergraduate degrees in communication sciences and disorders,  healthcare and nursing , or  special education .
  • Earn a master’s degree in speech-language pathology. After earning a bachelor’s degree, you must also earn a master’s degree to become a speech-language pathologist.  Here  is a list of these types of accredited graduate programs in each state.
  • Complete a clinical fellowship. To become a speech-language pathologist, you must complete 1,260 hours and gain at least 36 weeks of full-time clinical experience. ASHA has a  helpful fellowship guide .
  • Pass the Praxis exam. The  Praxis examination in speech-language pathology  is commissioned by ASHA. In general, to pass the exam, you must achieve a score of at least 162 on a 100 to 200 scale. That said, certain states may require different scores, so be sure to understand the specific requirements where you live.

speech language pathology western

5. Get certified. To become a licensed speech-language pathologist, you must be certified by both ASHA and the state you’ll be practicing in. ASHA provides links to state-specific requirements .

6. Apply for speech-language pathologists jobs. ASHA offers  career development resources  to help you find a job. Sites like Indeed, LinkedIn, and ZipRecruiter may also have job postings.

How Much Does a Speech-Language Pathologist Make?

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the national average annual  salary for speech-language pathologists  in 2022 was $84,140. The higher percentile earners  can make  more than $100,000, but salary can vary by state.

speech language pathology western

What is the Projected Job Growth?

The BLS projects the number of speech-language pathologist jobs to  grow by 19%  from 2022 to 2032. They expect 13,200 job openings each year.

What Skills Does a Speech-Language Pathologist Need?

It takes a specialized set of hard and soft skills to excel as a speech-language pathologist. They should be skilled in the following areas:

  • Active listening.  Knowing how to listen is crucial for speech-language pathologists, as understanding sounds and knowing how to improve speech is a key job function. They must know how to listen to concerns as well as incorrect speech patterns.
  • Adaptability.  Every individual is different. Speech-language pathologists must be able to adapt to meet the needs of every person they meet with.
  • Leadership.  Speech-language pathologists often orient others in their field, as well as caregivers and family members. They should have strong leadership skills and have a presence that inspires confidence.
  • Creativity.  It’s not always easy to help someone improve their speech. Sometimes, speech-language pathologists must find creative ways to teach language skills, especially if they’re working with children.
  • Verbal and written communication.  Communication is key, especially since speech-language pathologists are teaching this very skill. Getting messages across succinctly and accurately to both individuals and their caregivers is critical.
  • Critical thinking.  Finding solutions to complex speech problems is rarely easy. Speech-pathologists must be able to think critically through difficult issues to find solutions.
  • Decision-making.  To be a speech-language pathologist, you must be skilled at making decisions and shifting gears. An approach that works for one client may not work for the next, so be ready to make the decision that’s best for the individual.
  • Time management.  There’s high demand for speech-language pathologists, which means their schedules fill up quickly. To serve each client well, you must be intentional with your time and spend it on exercises that will best serve the client.
  • Enthusiasm.  It’s much easier to work for someone who is positive and excited. The best speech-pathologists are optimistic and enthusiastic as they motivate and support the individuals they work with.
  • Compassion.  Working through a speech or language difficulty can be challenging and embarrassing for individuals. Speech-language pathologists should have compassion and show kindness as they’re working with people.
