The War On Star Wars

The force isn’t for everyone.

“Star Wars, give me those Star Wars, don’t let them end!” sang Bill Murray to the tune of John Williams’s Star Wars anthem in a galaxy far, far away. With the release next month of The Force Awakens , it should be noted that there have always been a few critical eyes on the cultural reach of George Lucas’ empire.

For instance, fresh from the release of the original Star Wars,  Arthur Lubow in Film Comment  calls the film a triumph of the will over technology , an “anti-modern message in an ultra-modern wrapper.” In other words, it’s an anti-modernist film with too many parallels to Nazi ideology for Lubow’s taste. He doesn’t think it’s intentionally a “fascist movie,” just that the “Nazi mixture of heroism, self-sacrifice, and mysticism” may be an unrealized secret to its appeal.

Twenty years later, Robert Horton , also in Film Comment , says “enough a’ready” after the release of yet another special edition of one of the earlier films. He enjoys the movies’ “pleasing brew of Zen, Homer, and cowboy code” but it’s overarching cultural resonances feel thin to him. Star Wars fandom is like a religion, but isn’t one. Which hasn’t stopped the terminally ill from requesting previews for The Force Awakens .

In  The New Atlantis, an unnamed author, in interpreting the Star Wars universe, smugly makes a telling distinction between s.f. and sci-fi, which he defines as the serious and the cartoon types of science fiction, respectively . (We can ignore the fact that the writer, at the time of writing, assumed we had reached the “final” film, Revenge of the Sith.)

Not that George Lucas ever hid his model in the space opera serials of the 1930s-1940s. Yet the Sixties and early Seventies produced a revolution in science fiction, aspects of which seeped into the Star Trek franchise—which the author argues trafficked in larger ideas than the clichés and archetypes of Star Wars .

Along with 1975’s Jaws , Star Wars  really was the revenge of an empire, an empire called Hollywood. The summer blockbuster phenomenon marked an end of the New American Cinema/American New Wave’s explorations and experimentation that made mainstream movies in the late 1960s and early 1970s something to think about.

Fact or fiction? The science of Star Wars

How did those planets form? Could they exist in our universe? Could Star Wars really happen? Stanford Earth experts on planetary formation, processes and habitability discuss the science behind the fictional saga.

Stars

Space discoveries are in the news on a nearly weekly basis – but they may not leave an impression as impactful as the legend of Star Wars. From Wookiees and Ewoks to lightsabers and droids, the Star Wars movies have captured the imaginations of generations of fans. With the Dec. 20 release of the final installment of the Skywalker saga, The Rise of Skywalker , questions abound about the fate of the inhabitants of that faraway galaxy. Beyond the plot, there are plenty of questions we can ask about the science: How did those planets form? Could they exist in our universe? Could Star Wars really happen?

At the School of Earth, Energy & Environmental Sciences (Stanford Earth), researchers use geological and geophysical techniques to both investigate Earth and explore other planetary bodies. Assistant professor of geophysics Dustin Schroeder works on the use of ice-penetrating radar in observing and understanding the interaction of ice and water in the solar system. Laura Schaefer , an assistant professor of geological sciences, studies planetary atmospheres and their formation. Assistant professor of geological sciences Mathieu Lapôtre focuses on the physics behind sedimentary and geomorphic processes that shape planetary surfaces. Sonia Tikoo-Schantz , an assistant professor of geophysics, uses paleomagnetism and fundamental rock magnetism as tools to investigate problems in the planetary sciences.

Not long ago, in our very own galaxy, Stanford Earth discussed the science of Star Wars with these experts on planetary formation, processes and habitability.

On the volcanic planet Mustafar, Anakin duels with Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi, ends up nearly submerged in lava and needs to be turned into a cyborg to survive.

What kinds of forces would cause a planet to form like that? What would we need to survive?

TIKOO-SCHANTZ: Such a volcanic planet can exist from tidal heating. A comparable world would be Jupiter’s moon Io, which gets flexed on the inside by the gravitational pull of Jupiter and other Jovian moons. The resulting stress releases a lot of heat. However, the gases in the atmosphere of such a volcanic world would be noxious and surface temperatures would likely be too hot for anything to survive, much less get in a fight.

SCHAEFER: We have also found some exoplanets that orbit their stars so closely that they have permanent dayside magma oceans. But as Sonia said, the temperatures are so hot that you’d burn to a crisp before you got to have your Jedi duel.

Sun

The icy planet Hoth hosts a temporary Rebel base where the heroes have to defeat Imperial walkers in order to escape.

How would you explore the snow-covered orb? What subsurface processes form a rocky vs. icy planet?

SCHROEDER: Ice-penetrating radar would be the ideal geophysical technique for exploring Hoth. It would allow Rebel Alliance scientists and engineers to determine the thickness and properties of Hothian ice and snow. This would be useful for creating icy infrastructure like fortifications and ice-roads that avoid or exploit crevasses as well as for investigating the climate and history of the planet itself.

In terms of platforms, you could do a global survey from space if you had enough power (probably not a problem for a spacecraft with the power to approach light speed), unless snow-processes on Hoth produce problematic clutter reflections for the radar. Rebel airspeeders travel too fast to be an ideal airborne platform for ice-penetrating radar, so you’d probably go orbital for large-scale surveys and then tauntaun-pulled sleds for very local fine-scale studies.

Frozen secrets: Geophysicist explores glaciers with radar

Thwaites Glacier in Antarctica

Much of the data Dustin Schroeder uses to analyze ice sheets is collected by air-borne radar technology. While ground-penetrating radar can only measure a few meters through land, ice-penetrating radar can reach three kilometers below the surface.

LAPÔTRE: Because icy worlds form far from their host star(s) where temperature is low, ice essentially behaves like rock. At depth, viscous ice may convect like Earth’s mantle, leading to some kind of tectonics and even forming reservoirs of “magma” which create volcanoes when the magma finds its way to the surface. At the surface of planets without giant atmospheres, the ice is really cold and behaves like granite on Earth. On Titan, for example, rivers of methane and ethane erode a crust of water-ice rock.

Hoth, in contrast with the icy worlds of our solar system, is not technically an icy planet – it is a rocky planet covered in snow and ice. In that sense, it is more analogous to Snowball Earth, when our own planet was entirely frozen. This happened a few times in Earth’s history, through a runaway process in which an increasing snow cover led to more and more of the sunlight being reflected back to space, leading to further cooling. The last Snowball Earth episode is thought to have happened just before the explosive diversification of life in the oceans.

After escaping Hoth, Han Solo attempts to navigate an asteroid field that surrounds the planet, eventually landing on one of the rocks, which they discover is home to a giant space slug.

Is this what asteroid fields are really like? What happens when they hit the surface of Hoth? Could an asteroid support life?

TIKOO-SCHANTZ: This scene is totally unrealistic. Asteroids are not even remotely close enough to each other for a spacecraft like the Millennium Falcon to have to dodge around them. The average distance between two asteroids in our asteroid belt is 600,000 miles! If you flew in a random straight line through the asteroid belt, you are almost certain to NOT hit anything at all. I looked up the “canon” description for this asteroid field and it says that it was formed by the collision of two rocky planets. In reality, these types of planetary collisions primarily happen at the beginning of a solar system’s lifetime, and the resulting debris would have either come together to re-form a new planet or be gravitationally perturbed and ejected to other parts of the solar system.

Our asteroid belt is made up of many, many planetesimals that were gravitationally “herded” into their current position – mostly by the gravitational forcing of giant planets like Jupiter – and is not related to the breakup of a single planetary body. But if the Star Wars asteroid field was real, the objects hitting Hoth would vaporize upon impact. If these impacts are large enough or occur frequently enough, they could pose a serious threat to life forms living on Hoth.

SCHAEFER: An asteroid would be an unlikely place to find life, especially giant space slugs. The largest object in our own asteroid belt (Ceres, now classified as a dwarf planet) is only 7% the size of Earth and about the size of Texas. Its gravity is much too low to allow it to hold onto an atmosphere, which is vital to make liquid water stable at the surface. Tiny bacteria could possibly survive in the subsurface brines of Ceres (if they somehow managed the space journey to get there), but it’s unlikely they would thrive and evolve into a large organism because the environment is so inhospitable and energy-limited. Microscopic tardigrades (also known as waterbears) on Earth are possibly the only multicellular animal that could survive such conditions (again, if they somehow got delivered there), but they would be in a dormant hibernation state, and also not likely to evolve into a giant space slug.

The heroes in Star Wars embark on many solo missions to other planets, as well as large-scale efforts to move the entire Rebel fleet to new operation bases.

What goes into space missions from Earth? How have you been involved?

Saturn's moon, Mimas

SCHROEDER: Space missions that we organize from Earth include hundreds of people. They play a wide range of roles from science and engineering to management and leadership. Planetary missions take years to decades to develop and operate.

As a science team member on the REASON instrument (Radar for Europa Assessment and Sounding: Ocean to Near Surface) on NASA’s upcoming Europa Clipper Mission, I’ve had an opportunity to help with the requirements, design and scientific planning for the instrument. Once the mission arrives at Europa, we’ll use the radar data to investigate the geophysical processes and potential habitability of the moon’s ice shell.

LAPÔTRE: I was a science team member for the Curiosity rover that is currently investigating an ancient lake environment on Mars. I participated in daily operations with hundreds of other scientists and engineers, and had the opportunity to lead the rover’s investigation of a modern dune field. On a daily basis, we would all convene by teleconference to discuss the latest data sent back to Earth, and decide where to go next before the engineers implement our plan and send instructions to Mars.

With so many scientists on the team, it can be very difficult to get the rover to go where you want it to – you have to make a pretty compelling case to convince others your idea has more merit than theirs!

In one of the most iconic scenes from the original Star Wars movie, Luke Skywalker walks outside his uncle’s moisture farm to gaze at two suns on the horizon of his home planet of Tatooine.

What makes it possible for a planet to orbit two stars? What do we know about binary systems in the universe?

SCHAEFER: About half of all stars like the sun are actually in binary systems. We have currently found 143 planets in 97 binary systems. In 22 of these systems, the planets orbit both stars, but in the remaining systems, the planets orbit only one of the stars in the system. In most of these binary systems, one of the stars is often much bigger than the other, so having two stars that are about the same size is a little unusual.

Most of these systems also seem to be coplanar: The planets and the stars all orbit in the same plane, indicating that they formed from the same protoplanetary disk. To make two stars, the disk would have had to be much more massive than the protoplanetary disk for a single-star system, but otherwise the process of planet formation would work much the same way as it does for other systems, except that planets that formed too close to the binary pair might end up being ejected from the system. Planets far enough away from the binary pair have stable orbits and may be habitable.

What has been the most exciting discovery you’ve witnessed since you started your research in planetary sciences?

LAPÔTRE: To name just a few of my favorites, I’d say (1) the diverse landscapes of Pluto, with mountains, glaciers, plains and even possibly dunes; (2) the active migration of ripples at the surface of the 67P/Churyumov Gerasimenko comet; a comet has no atmosphere, and as such, the formation of ripples, let alone the detection of their motion during a short-lived mission, was very surprising and exciting; (3) the discovery of a type of Martian ripples that does not exist on Earth; (4) the possible detection of a subglacial lake beneath Mars’ polar cap.

TIKOO-SCHANTZ: One thing that really excites me is that new developments in technology have enabled us to study the physical and chemical properties of extremely small samples of extraterrestrial materials (even things that are less than a tenth of a millimeter across) and learn about large-scale processes that were going on in the early solar system. For example, we can retrieve paleomagnetic records from individual chondrules (tiny spherules that are some of the first solid materials in the solar system) and learn about magnetic fields that were present in the disk of gas and dust that orbited the protosun before the planets formed. But perhaps the thing that most excites me is the discoveries we are making in other solar systems.

SCHAEFER: The variety of exoplanets discovered around other stars continues to astonish me. We don’t have examples of the most common types of planets (super-Earths and sub-Neptunes) in our own solar system, suggesting that our home system is unusual – not just for hosting life. There have also been amazing new observations of proto-planetary disks around other stars showing gaps in the disks where we think large planets like Jupiter are forming: This level of detail had never been seen before until the last 7-10 years with the ALMA telescope and is really starting to change the way we think about planet formation.

Q&A: Modeling an exoplanet’s atmosphere

Illustration of an exoplanet

New research using data from NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope has provided a rare glimpse at the surface of a rocky planet outside our solar system. The planet may be similar to Mercury or Earth’s moon, with little to no atmosphere.

How has Star Wars influenced your ideas, aspirations or career choices?

TIKOO-SCHANTZ: I am a lifelong science fiction nerd. As a kid, all of the “Stars” (Star Wars, Star Trek, Stargate) presented me with this vision of a universe filled with innumerable worlds waiting to be explored and a sense that we are not alone on our little blue dot in space. A great motivator for me as a planetary scientist is the idea that perhaps someday I will be able to fact-check some of these fantastical planets I read about via my research and see whether or not aspects of these worlds could exist in reality.

SCHROEDER: In academic science, as in any career, you encounter people, processes and cultures doing things out of “anger, fear or aggression” (which, as Yoda explains, belong to the “Dark Side” of the force). Star Wars is a good reminder to do our best to keep things like this out of science; to appreciate rather than tear down the work of our colleagues, to work on projects because of intrinsic interest instead of a fear that others may do them first, and to reject the temptation to keep a record of real or perceived scholarly slights. Star Wars challenges us to be Science Jedi not Science Sith.

Star wars essay questions.

What is the Force?

The Force, as Obi-Wan Kenobi describes it, is "an energy field created by all living things. It surrounds us and penetrates us. It binds the galaxy together," and it is what gives a Jedi his power. In this way, the Force resembles the life force that many religions allude to, and is reminiscent of the concept of qi , a central concept in Chinese medicine and martial arts. The Force is a metaphysical power stronger than logic can explain.

What is Han Solo's narrative journey in the film?

When Luke and Obi-Wan first meet Han Solo in Mos Eisley, he is a boastful and irreverent smuggler who doesn't look out for anybody besides himself. He has debts to settle with Jabba the Hutt from a narcotics deal that went awry, and he has no interest in thinking about the Force or working for the Rebellion. He sees Obi-Wan and Luke as annoyances more than allies. However, by the end of the film, he begins to develop a conscience and comes to Luke's rescue during the destruction of the Death Star. By the end of the film, Han Solo proves that he does have a sense of right and wrong, and wants to fight on the side of good.

What allows Luke to destroy the Death Star?

A number of elements come into play when Luke is on the rebel mission to destroy the Death Star. For one thing, he is an excellent pilot and has good aim. Secondly, Han Solo comes back to help him in the Millennium Falcon at a key moment. Thirdly, the spirit of Obi-Wan Kenobi speaks to him while he's flying and reminds him to "use the Force." Before he dies, Obi-Wan warns Darth Vader that if he strikes him down he will only become more powerful. This proves true, as after he dies, Obi-Wan becomes a ubiquitous force in Luke's life and reminds him of his powers as a Jedi.

How are Han Solo and Princess Leia similar?

Both Han Solo and Princess Leia have a certain witty and sardonic attitude about conflict. While Leia is much more politically engaged, working for the Rebellion, and Han Solo is more self-serving, they both have a desire to call the shots and a certain bravery and grit when it comes to facing conflict. They spar throughout much of their acquaintance, but they are also drawn to one another, seeing in the other a kindred smartass.

What is Luke's conflict with his uncle, Owen?

While Luke's uncle, Owen, wants Luke to stay on Tatooine and help him with farming, Luke desperately wants to go to school to become a pilot, and has his sights set on bigger and better things than simply staying on the farm. Perhaps it is because Owen sees something of Luke's father, a Jedi knight, in Luke that he is so protective of the young boy. However, his conservative attitude only makes Luke want to set out on his own more.

Today, Star Wars seems to be an irreplaceable part of our culture, and it concerns not only Americans but the whole words already. As an outstanding piece of the movie industry, and, in the wider sense, art, it deserves to be spoken and written about.

In the core, writing a Star Wars essay doesn’t differ much from writing any other essay. The same structure, the same logic of presenting arguments and proofs, the same intro and wind up. Still, it might be a little bit more difficult as the story requires additional research and the time to think it over. It’s always better to write it on your own, expressing what only you can express, but for critical moments when there is no time left, there is, luckily, a great online helper. With a single text message ‘ Write my paper about Star Wars’, you will gain its exceptional writers’ assistance as quickly as possible. With an outstanding essay writing service like WriteMyPaperHub, you will not have to spend so much time on reviewing the movie and compiling your thoughts together.

And now we will provide some glimpses on how to do it yourself – join us!

A Comprehensive Guide on How to Write a Star Wars College Essay

Before you start writing your first draft about the story, don’t think that you already know everything if you had seen the movie some time ago. To understand what you are describing, you need to delve deep into this Star Wars universe: devote an evening or two to reviewing these episodes, select and write down what has made a particular impact on you, and try to think of the ideas that stand behind the conversations and the plot turns.

Passing this preparatory stage, proceed to make the plan – first, think of what idea was the strongest and affected you greatly (ideally, not connected to politics). This idea will be a perfect ‘hook’ to place in the introduction and grasp the reader’s attention and awaken curiosity.

After that, there are more steps, since creating a well-shaped essay should be aimed at the wholesome picture, not a sum of several rough drafts.

  • Choose the conflict / main idea of your essay . This is the point that your whole essay will be devoted to – a good option will be to choose ever-relevant topics like teacher and learner, peace and war, human relationships including race and gender, etc. Here you can also add some interesting facts about the world of Star Wars. They will capture the attention and give you the space to continue the story, putting forward your thoughts and impressions.
  • Choose the topic . Having the idea is great, but it will be conveyed only if you formulate it well. The topic should sound appealing but not be too straightforward or reveal the end conclusion that you are about to make. Besides, be careful with conclusions as it often happens that when you begin to write an essay, being quite convinced in one opinion, you end up thinking differently. In these cases, the topic should reflect a part of this change.
  • Write the body part in a personalized manner . Here, in this essay, nobody needs you to retell the whole story, – you write this text to communicate to the world what you have seen in this most successful movie of all times because all of us see differently. Sure thing, you can mention the main events, characters, and parts of the plot, but be sure that you view them critically, analyzing each action to come to a certain logical conclusion and perceiving the story with your own unique background.
  • Do not forget to link ideas to concrete evidence . Now, you cannot say ‘I think that Luke Skywalker did a wrong thing’ without supplying the real proof of his actions and the bad results they had. Each idea must be supported and harmonically lead to a single result.
  • Check your essay for grammatical (and lexical) mistakes . While many students often neglect this part of the writing work, don’t do so. If your essay contains brilliant examples, provides all the proofs, has the linking words on their places, gives a deep insight into the world created by the Star Wars culture, it doesn’t matter if your essay is full of stupid mistakes. In case you lack time to do it by yourself, use an online program like Grammarly or Hemingway to get it checked (however, don’t forget that they might not always be right).

To crown it all, if you dive into the story of Star Wars and let it fascinate you, your essay will be a great piece of writing. The most important is to enjoy the process, get experience, learn to think and analyze each event, – then you will know that your Star Wars essay is written right.

This is some of the best research ever inspired by 'Star Wars'

"Star Wars" is one of the most-loved science fiction series of all time, and it has attracted a fiercely loyal fan base over the decades.

A good number of those mega-fans are working scientists, and their passion for the books and movies has led to some hilarious yet surprisingly legitimate research.

In honor of the upcoming release of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens ," we've rounded up some of the best science studies and experiments inspired by the franchise.

This is by no means a comprehensive list, but it does contain some of our favorites.

Scientists created a lightsaber...sort of.

star wars research paper topics

Star Wars fans across the globe rejoiced in 2013 when scientists accidentally created a strip of light particles they said behaved just like a lightsaber .

The team had figured out a way to get particles of light to stick together and form a molecule — the same physics principle behind a lightsaber.

The bad news is that you can't actually duel with the lab-grown lightsabers.  The problem, as astrophysicist and host of StarTalk Radio Neil deGrasse Tyson explains , is that most beams of light just pass right through each other.

If scientists ever figure out how to harness much more powerful, energetic light sources like gamma rays, then technically we might be able to create real lightsabers. That's because gamma rays will interact with other gamma rays and create a force, as physicist Briax Cox explained .

Can we get someone on that, stat? Because we'd really like to start our Jedi Knight training .

The Rebel Alliance probably left the galaxy in a devastating economic depression after the Battle of Endor.

In a fantastically written research paper called " It's a Trap: Emperor Palpatine's Poison Pill ," e conomics researcher Zachary Feinstein calculated that the Death Star cost approximately  $193 Quintillion (in 2012 U.S. dollars), and the gross domestic product (GDP) of the galactic economy was roughly $4.6 Sextillion a year.

Banks in the galactic empire are likely invested in the Death Star and Feinstein estimates they hold about 60% of that mind-blowingly huge GDP. So after rebel terrorists blow up the Death Star in the Battle of Endor, Feinstein concludes they would have sent the economy into a tailspin and created biggest financial crash we've ever seen .

"In this case study we found that the Rebel Alliance would need to prepare a bailout of at least 15%, and likely at least 20%, of [GDP] in order to mitigate the systemic risks and the sudden and catastrophic economic collapse," Feinstein writes. "Without such funds at the ready, it likely the Galactic economy would enter an economic depression of astronomical proportions."

Faster-than-light travel would have made Luke Skywalker way younger than his twin sister Leia.

star wars research paper topics

Einstein's theory of general relativity suggests that time slows down the faster you travel. It's called time dilation and scientists have already demonstrated it really happens .

In "Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back," Luke and Leia are separated. Leia takes the Millennium Falcon to Cloud City, while Luke takes an X-Wing Starfighter to Dagobah to start his Jedi training with Yoda.

The Millennium Falcon can fly faster than Luke's X-Wing, so Leia’s journey yields a time dilation of about 63 days. But the journey to Dagobah is about 25 times the distance to Cloud City, so Luke is traveling at a fast speed for much longer than Leia. The students estimate his time dilation is about 701 days (1.92 years).

That means that Luke ends up about 1.75 years younger than Leia by the end of the movie.

Calculated the weight of Yoda, this physicist did.

star wars research paper topics

Physicist and Wired blogger Rhett Allain figured out how much Yoda weighs based on the image above. He explained in a blog post how he did it:

Ok, so here is the plan: I am going to use Luke’s pose to estimate the mass of Yoda. This will be all about the center of mass. If the Luke-Yoda system is in equilibrium, then the center of mass for the entire system must be directly above Luke’s one hand on the ground.

The answer? Yoda weighs about 96 pounds.

Bonus: He did this with Darth Vader, too  (at least 507 lbs, possibly up to 1 ton). Allain has also  used physics to  analyze a lot of " Star Wars" scenes .

“Hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side, kid.”

A team of researchers with access to one of the world's most powerful lasers tried to create a real "Star Wars" laser bolt, like the ones fired from Han Solo's iconic blaster gun.

Specifically, scientists at the Laser Centre  at the  University of Warsaw  created a high-pulse laser that mimics a "Star Wars" laser bolt. The problem is at that speed the laser moves at the speed of light — it's too fast to see with the naked eye.

The bad news is we wouldn't be able to see Han Solo's laser blasts in real life. But the good news is they did it! That and the researchers used a high-speed camera trick to catch the pulses on film , which shows what they actually look like.

Speaking of lasers, could one really blow up an entire planet?

star wars research paper topics

The Death Star's laser would have to be one million billion times more powerful than the most powerful laser ever fired on Earth, according to a video from the  American Chemical Society .

A laser that powerful would give off so much heat that it would melt the Death Star the second it fired, chemist Raychelle Burks explained in the video.

Also, that moment where multiple laser beams converge into one (see the image above) is impossible, Burks said. Separate beams of light would just pass through each other — not clump into one ultra-powerful laser of doom.

It turns out the deflector shield that the Death Star uses is technologically possible.

In "Star Wars," lots of ships, rebel bases, and even the Death Star use deflector shields to protect against laser blasts.

A group of students at the University of Leicester created a design concept for a real deflector shield — all you need is a film of super hot plasma and an electromagnetic field to hold it in place.

The problem is that people inside the shield wouldn't be able to see anything because the shield would deflect most light coming in.

Was it legal for Han Solo to shoot first? (Because yes, he totally did shoot first.)

star wars research paper topics

It's a bitter contention among Star Wars fans — did Han Solo shoot bounty hunter Greedo first?

In "Star Wars: A New Hope," Solo has a bounty on his head because he owes Greedo's boss a lot of money. Greedo wants to cash in on that.  Here's the scene , if you're curious.

The answer seems to be definitively yes, Han Solo did shoot first . But was it legal?

Lawyer Josh Gilliland dug into Model Penal Code to see if Han was justified in using deadly force in self-defense against Greedo.

Gilliland concludes that Solo had reason to conclude that Greedo was going to kill him and that his life was in immediate danger. Retreat wasn't an option since Greedo had Solo cornered in a booth.

"Applying the facts to the Model Penal Code and Common Law, then, it's clear that Han was justified in shooting first and killing Greedo," Gilliland concludes.

Psychologists are trying to figure out what people think about the series reboot.

star wars research paper topics

Some fans are dreading the "Star Wars" reboot that comes out on December 18. Some are stoked out of their minds.

A team of psychologists want to know to get to the bottom of it and figure out what kind of impact the new movie is going to have on audiences.  It's called the Star Wars World Project .

"We would love for you to tell us what you know, think and feel about the forthcoming film, STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS," the researchers write on the website.

"We want to hear about your anticipation (or lack thereof), the ways in which you have sought out or avoided information, your plans for watching it, and any hopes, fears or other expectations you have."

BONUS: And in perhaps the greatest April Fool's joke of all time, physicists at CERN announced they discovered The Force.

star wars research paper topics

The Large Hadron Collider at the CERN lab in Europe restarted this year at a more powerful energy level than ever before.

Some people who are unfamiliar with physics think the LHC has the power to create black holes capable of swallowing up the Earth, open portals to other worlds, and other strange theories.

On April Fool's Day this year, CERN scientists decided to lean into the conspiracy theories and have a little "Star Wars"-style fun.

" Though four fundamental forces – the strong force, the weak force, the electromagnetic force and gravity – have been well documented and confirmed in experiments over the years, CERN announced today the first unequivocal evidence for the Force," CERN wrote in a fake press release . "'Very impressive, this result is,' said a diminutive green spokesperson for the laboratory."

Really the whole press release is a fun read with clever "Star Wars" references.

Science fiction like "Star Wars" shows up in real scientific research all the time, and the series has also inspired legitimate research.

We can't wait to see what studies the new movie brings next.

7 topics star wars fans love to debate.

Amy Ratcliffe

From "Who Shot First" to midi-chlorians, fans are passionate about the finer details of Star Wars.

When a franchise has a large and diverse fan base like Star Wars , there are bound to be disagreements. Being passionate about a topic means strong feelings and those feelings can lead to heated discussions. That's not necessarily a bad thing. In fact, healthy and polite debates with other enthusiastic fans are fun. I've gained insight about the Star Wars universe from participating in debates and watch others go back and forth, because as I'm sure you've noticed, Star Wars fans have opinions. Like, about everything. If it happened in the galaxy far, far away, we're tearing it apart and examining it from every angle. These seven topics are ones I see discussed frequently:

Han and Greedo

1. Han and Greedo

Han shot first, Greedo shot first, Han was the only one who shot -- pick a side. The unfortunate event that transpired in the Mos Eisley Cantina comes up within fandom and even with people who don't consider themselves to be Star Wars fans. And even though the answer is out there, it's presented in a couple of different ways so it depends on your certain point of view.

Qui Gon

2.  Midi-chlorians

Midi-chlorians were introduced into Star Wars canon in The Phantom Menace . The fact that they're canon doesn't stop fans from talking about the point of midi-chlorian levels, how they affect Force users, and why they weren't mentioned in the original trilogy.

Ewoks.

Are Ewoks cute and furry teddy bear-like creatures or vicious carnivores? Sure, they helped fight the Empire and serve as a symbol of the many alien races oppressed by Palpatine, but they also tried to roast Chewbacca and Han over an open fire and eat them for dinner.

Stormtroopers Shooting

4. Stormtroopers' combat skills

"Only Imperial stormtroopers are so precise." The wise Obi-Wan Kenobi led us to believe stormtroopers were all capable marksmen. Then, for the most part, we see them miss everything and everyone they aim to hit. Was Obi-Wan being a crazy old wizard, or was he thinking stormtroopers would be like the clone troopers he used to fight beside?

Blu-ray cover

5. Viewing order

With six films and two animated series, how does one decide on viewing order? Many people suggest going in the order of release so you'd watch the original trilogy, the prequel trilogy, Star Wars: The Clone Wars , and then Star Wars Rebels . Others suggest leaving out the animated series for first time viewers and watching the films in chronological order from Episode I to Episode VI. Those are far from the only variations.

Young Anakin

6. Prequel trilogy

The merits of the prequel trilogy come up frequently in conversations about Star Wars . Did we need to see the path of Anakin Skywalker from such a young age? Did Qui-Gon need to die so soon? Did Obi-Wan fail Anakin? The questions about the stories and characters introduced in the prequels are endless, and every fan has strong feelings about all of it. Go ahead, test that theory at Celebration Anaheim.

Millennium Falcon

"It's the ship that made the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs." Do you even know what you did with that line, Han Solo? A parsec is a measure of distance, not time. Fans have been trying to rationalize Han's boast for decades. Is Han lying or is he talking about how he navigated close to black holes to navigate the Millennium Falcon over a shorter distance than the normal route?

The Evolving Portrayal of Female Emotions in the Marvel Cinematic Universe

Marvel’s content platform strategy : focusing on the marvel cinematic universe(mcu), anticipating the ageing trajectories of superheroes in the marvel cinematic universe, the world building in the superhero genre through movies and video games: the interplay between marvel’s avengers and marvel cinematic universe, the effects of media literacy-based activities on writing skills in the efl classroom.

This study explores the effectiveness of media literacy-based activities on writing proficiency and affective domains in the EFL setting. A quasi-experiment was conducted during the 2021 academic year with 148 college EFL students selected as participants from three classes from a private university in Seoul, South Korea. Participants were divided into three groups based on proficiency levels: upper proficiency, intermediate proficiency, and lower proficiency. The assigned activities included four steps: (1) watching video clips made by a teacher, (2) group discussion, (3) individual presentation, and (4) individual writing. For these activities, participants used multimedia like YouTube, Fanfiction.net, Reddit discussion boards, and blogs to understand the topic, evaluate the content, and express their thoughts. Popular franchises, including the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), the Potterverse, and the Twilight saga provided material for the activities. The study’s results reveal that students significantly increased their writing skills, regardless of proficiency level. Moreover, the higher the linguistic ability, the more the writing ability improved. In a survey, students also showed significant changes in all affective domains (anxiety, interest, confidence, and engagement), except for the lower proficiency group’s confidence domain. The study presents a detailed summary of the activities and derives meaningful implications.

Marvel Cinematic Universe Introductions

Petrinovich’s target article focused on how behavioral science is done, including how it is often done wrong, and how it should be done. I identify another malign influence on behavioral science, which, so far as I know, has, until now, been ignored (I would be happy to be shown that I am wrong on this). To wit, the way that Introductions to papers are written creates a niche that can be exploited for the purposes of promoting one’s work to obtain resources or status, or for self-aggrandizement. I offer a few, probably wrongheaded, suggestions for ending this practice.

Marvel Cinematic Universe Semantic Question Answering System Based on Ontology

The cultural repertoire of recontextualized superhero in the avengers sequels.

This research presents content analysis to the cultural repertoire of Marvel Cinematic Universes superhero motion pictures. It investigates the content, theme, and core ideas of Avengers sequels: The Avengers (2012), Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), and Avengers: Endgame (2019). It explores how the Avengers sequels portrays recontextualization of superhero characters and whether as well as to what extent it provides US cultural monomyth. The finding shows that each character of the Avengers has flaws and vulnerabilities as common human beings that leave them from traditional superhero monomyth. Nevertheless, it still illustrates US cultural imperialism, pharmakon portrayal, hegemonic masculinity, and sovereignty. These motion pictures still serve US heroism and patriotism interest as well as binary interplay: order-chaos, law-violence and villain-superhero that occurs among superheroes, extra-terrestrial race, robots and Titans despite its recontextualized characters. Moreover, it depicts the traditional masculine ideal valorisation where men are more likely powerful, intelligent, and equipped by sophisticated technology whereas women are seen as supportive superheroes with implied beauty standards. The recommendation for future research is discussed.

The memory of perfection: Digital faces and nostalgic franchise cinema

This article is concerned with the intersection of digitally augmented performance and nostalgia in contemporary Hollywood franchise cinema. The practice of ‘de-ageing’ or even resurrecting actors following their real-life deaths in films like Tron: Legacy (Joseph Kosinski, 2010), Terminator Genysis (Alan Taylor, 2015), Rogue One (Gareth Edwards, 2016), Blade Runner 2049 (Denis Villeneuve, 2017), Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (J.J. Abrams, 2019), and a large number of Marvel Cinematic Universe films, is now commonplace. Though such digital faces are primarily still found in franchise cinema, some exceptions ( The Irishman, Martin Scorsese, 2019; Gemini Man, Ang Lee, 2019) are telling in their franchise-like appeals to cinematic nostalgia. In particular, the digital face is most commonly aligned with the ‘legacy film’ (Golding, 2019), resurrected franchises interested in transferring franchise protagonists, themes and fandom across generations. The digital face therefore is an expression of the convergence of the digital with film, with the franchise, with the past and with memory. For these films, memory and nostalgia are meticulous exercises involving thousands of work hours of highly skilled CGI workers and cutting-edge technology. These highly technical, virtuosic digital faces are quite literally the face of this kind of nostalgia, and as Ndalianis observes, position the face ‘as façade that opens up a time-travel passageway between past and present’, inviting a seam-spotting game between audience and filmmaker (2014). Even if the digital face is perfect in its recreation, the audience’s knowledge of the impossibility of the performance leaves a trace of artistry. Accordingly, digital faces are creative, technical and financial decisions above all. This article outlines the uses of the digital face for memory, nostalgia and seriality in contemporary Hollywood franchise cinema, with a focus on representation and death.

Expanded Universes in Science Fiction: A Matter of Integration

Still lacking theoretical definitions, expanded universes are an artistic phenomenon often seen in science fiction literature as well as in narratives in other media. This text proposes a mechanism to explain how these universes come into being. For this, we analyze a series of cases such as Robert A. Heinlen’s Future History, Ursula K. Le Guin’s Hainish Cycle, George R. R. Martin’s Thousand Worlds, Joanna Russ’ Whileaway, and transmedia examples such as the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Borrowing from Tamar Yacobi’s concept of mechanisms of integration – ways in which the reader makes sense of inconsistencies or oddities in a narrative – we argue that the explanation that two or more independent stories are set in a common universe is a hypothesis generated by the reader to integrate coincidences between these stories
