jobs for biology degree

“What can I do with a biology degree?” is a question biology students often ask themselves. Everything from microscopic proteins and the DNA within the cells of all living organisms to how we interact with complex ecological systems on Earth falls under the realm of biology. Some of the major types of biology include molecular biology , anatomy, physiology and ecology .

With science becoming more interdisciplinary, new careers in biology are emerging as well. Indeed, a degree in biology provides you with knowledge and skills highly relevant to countless industries.

Graduating from the best universities for biology in the UK, as ranked in the 2024 league table by the Complete University Guide, can lead to lucrative career opportunities. Top universities include Cambridge, University College London (UCL), Oxford, Imperial College London and Durham.

Popular areas where your biology degree will be highly valued include pure biology and life sciences , clinical science , technology and engineering , and environmental science . This article discusses the top three highest paying jobs with a biology degree in each of these fields.

Pure biology and life sciences

Traditional jobs for biology graduates typically involve teaching, research or health promotion. In these fields, you could inspire future biological scientists and conduct high-impact research. With experience and excellence, you could even become a pioneer in whichever area you work in, helping progress the field of biology as a whole.

  • Headteacher

Job role: Headteachers run schools and ensure their success. They are the face of the school and they set out the school’s values and agenda, devise strategies for areas of improvement, comply with health and safety standards, manage finances and foster relationships with students, parents, teachers and, sometimes, politicians. You can still continue to teach biology as a headteacher.

Route: With a biology degree, you could start teaching biology at school once you complete the qualified teacher status (QTS). Get involved with senior roles within your school and help with running the school. Ideally, complete the National Professional Qualification for Headship. After several years of experience as a senior teacher, you could become a headteacher.

Average salary (experienced): £131,000

  • Professor of biology

Job role: Teaching biological sciences at higher education level is no small feat. Senior lecturers and academics at universities are typically pioneers in their area of interest and have contributed greatly to research, especially at renowned institutions.

Route: Once you have graduated with a BSc in biology, you usually need a Master’s to enter a PhD programme. After working as a research scientist, getting involved in lecturing and doing high-impact research as a postdoc for several years, you could apply for professorship. Senior academics usually end up doing research in a niche area of biology.

Average salary (experienced): £55,000; over £100,000 at certain universities e.g. Cambridge

  • Sports physiologist

Job role: Sports and exercise scientists apply their knowledge of human physiology to help people enhance their sporting performance and improve their overall health. Their working environment may include sports centres, hospitals or research facilities. Many work privately, seeing a range of clients including athletes.

Route: A degree in physiology or biology is typically required; a Master’s or PhD specifically in sports physiology or exercise science can further enhance your employability. After you have established a good reputation, you could manage your own consulting company or work exclusively for high-profile athletes.

Average salary (experienced): £60,000

Naturally, biology is at the heart of medicine and healthcare . Expertise in fields such as genetics , microbiology and biochemistry are driving innovation in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. If you completed a biology degree, you could do a Master’s, clinical training or placements to qualify for a range of clinical careers.

  • Pathologist

Job role: Pathologists process and examine tissue samples collected from patients to aid the diagnosis of medical conditions. They work with high-tech machines and microscopes and are usually based in hospital labs.

Route: Relevant undergraduate degrees include biology or biomedical science. To work in the NHS, you must enrol onto the Scientist Training Programme (STP) and register with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). You could additionally complete Higher Specialist Scientist Training (HSST) to obtain consultant status.

Average salary (experienced): £69,000

  • Clinical scientist

Job role: Clinical scientists can work in a range of specialisms, such as neurophysiology, cardiac science or microbiology. They form a crucial part of a multidisciplinary team to deliver healthcare efficiently and safely. Your exact duties will depend on your chosen career path and may include working as a laboratory technician or seeing patients and performing tests.

Route: This job also involves completion of the STP and HCPC registration, and, optionally, HSST for consultancy. A biology degree is broad enough to allow you to move into most specialisms in clinical science. As a senior clinical scientist, you could take on managerial roles in your department or apply your expertise in biotech , e.g. quality control or research and development.

Average salary (experienced): £68,000

Job role: Geneticists analyse the genomics in all living organisms, but in a clinical setting their focus is limited to human genetics. They study genes involved in health and disease to help medical teams diagnose and offer targeted therapies for genetic conditions and cancers.

Route: Relevant pre-STP degrees include genetics, biology or other life sciences. A Master’s or PhD is the norm, particularly in academic research. With experience, you could manage genomic research departments, become a professor or move into industries, e.g. the pharmaceutical sector.

Average salary (experienced): £58,000

Technology and engineering

As with most industries, research, medicine and agriculture are becoming heavily reliant on technology. Fields such as biotechnology, bioinformatics and biomedical engineering require excellent knowledge of biology as well as engineering and physics principles. As such, biology graduates with an interest in technological innovation can play a vital role in the biotech sector.

  • Data scientist

Job role: Data science is one of the highest paying jobs in tech, particularly in life sciences that deal with large amounts of complex data. Data scientists with a background in biology perform complex data analysis for universities, research facilities or biotech companies with the aim of providing actionable insight.

Route: After a biology degree, you could either do a Master’s in data science or gain relevant experience to land a junior position. Learning advanced methods relating to machine learning and artificial intelligence can significantly boost your job prospects. With experience, you could become a principal data scientist at a biotech firm or an independent consultant data scientist.

Average salary (experienced): £82,500

  • Software engineer

Job role: Software engineers with a background in biology design, build and test software for use in biological research at hospitals, labs or biotech firms. They ensure their programme meets their clients’ needs and troubleshoot any potential errors.

Route: A biology degree puts you in a good position to apply to biotech firms for junior positions as employers often prefer candidates with in-depth knowledge of the field. To gain programming skills, you can do a Master’s in software development or become self-taught. With experience, you could move into consultancy or run your own business.

Average salary (experienced): £70,000

  • Biomedical engineer

Job role: Biomedical engineering combines principles from biology, physics and engineering to design medical machines and equipment, ranging from prosthetics and implants to surgical robots and scanners. Those in this field often conduct research to build new products to be used in healthcare.

Route: An undergraduate degree in biomedical engineering is the traditional route, but you can still enter this field with a biology degree if you do a relevant Master’s or gain relevant experience, e.g. working as a biological technician.

PhD scholarship within plant molecular biology and the effect of temperature on plant development

universitypositions

Job Information

Offer description, about the position.

The Department of Plant Sciences (IPV), Faculty of Biosciences (BIOVIT) at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) has a vacant 3-year PhD–position related to temperature effects on Plant Development.

Global warming has been causing a steady rise in average temperature and is considered one of the major threats to the productivity of crop systems. If temperature continues to rise as predicted, in a context of increasing demand, higher soil poverty and less water availability, a significant increase in plant productivity will be required to sustain an already strained food production chain. It is, therefore, urgent to identify the molecular mechanisms plants deploy to respond to changes in temperature, particularly in food and forage crop species.

The current project sets out to understand how grasses productivity is conditioned by ambient temperature during critical developmental periods.

The proposed research will generate data that can directly link temperature response with plant fitness and yield and provide a deeper understanding of the adaptative flexibility of plants to climate change. The project results will directly contribute to the plant research community efforts to identify temperature driven mechanisms (a current hot topic in the scientific community).

The PhD candidate will be working within a team from different scientific backgrounds.

The applicant is made aware that an application for a PhD position at NMBU is at the same time an application for admission to a PhD program at the institution. The documentation that is necessary to ensure that the admission requirements are met must be uploaded as an attachment.

Biology graduate Jesse Laseter discusses his research on small predators in Missouri glades during the Undergraduate Research Symposium on April 26

A small part of Jesse Laseter might have felt bad for missing his chance to walk across the commencement stage last weekend at the University of Missouri–St. Louis .

But the new biology graduate was eager to take advantage of one of the learning opportunities at his new job as a resource management technician with the Missouri Department of Conservation .

Rather than joining classmates in their caps and gowns, Laseter, who graduated magna cum laude, spent his Saturday with some of his new colleagues getting training on banding Canada geese , a practice the department deploys to gain important insights into how they move about in both urban and rural environments around the state.

“It’s great,” Laseter said. “They’re giving me all these training opportunities. They’re completely optional, but they really want me to increase my knowledge in conservation. So, I’m getting chainsaw certified, ATV certified. You can get a certification in aquatic plant identification. There are all these great opportunities they’re providing me, and I’m just so excited to participate.”

Laseter feels lucky to be immersing himself in his new role rather than on the job search.

He landed his opportunity at the Missouri Department of Conservation in mid-February. He remembers vividly getting a phone call one afternoon in Benton Hall , a few weeks after applying and interviewing for the job.

“The building can have sketchy cellular service, and I got this random call from a Kirkwood number,” he said. “I’m answering it thinking it was just some spam call. But I heard a voice saying like, ‘Oh, this is Erin Shank with the Department of Conservation. We want to …’ Then it cuts out.”

Laseter was suddenly in a panic, running upstairs to hopefully find a stronger signal so he could call her back. He was able to reach her, and she told him they wanted to offer him the job.

“I was just ecstatic,” Laseter said. “I was kind of jumping around a little bit by these windows in Benton Hall. I just remember walking in circles and not being able to believe it.”

Laseter knew there was stiff competition for the position and wasn’t sure he was qualified after learning about other applicants with more specific degrees in wildlife management. But he also had a leg up because he’d met Shank, the St. Louis Community and Private Land Conservation Unit supervisor, and one of her colleagues a few months earlier through his work as an undergraduate researcher in Associate Professor Aimee Dunlap ’s Cognitive Ecology Lab . A doctoral candidate in the lab, Becky Hansis-O’Neill , had organized a population survey of tarantula and herpetofauna near recreation trails in Jefferson County that Laseter assisted with.

“Because these tarantulas are in a community of high conservation concern, people from the department” – including Shank – “happily joined along,” Laseter said. “That’s where I got to know them, and that was probably my in.”

Laseter hadn’t given much thought to working in conservation when he arrived at UMSL after transferring from St. Louis Community College–Meramec . He’d planned to major in biology and was interested in working in a lab, but he always figured his focus would be on cellular or molecular biology.

He described a career fair organized by the Department of Biology in Benton Hall as a turning point in his educational journey. At the fair, he spotted a table with representatives of the Litzsinger Road Ecology Center in Ladue, not far from where he grew up in Brentwood. They were discussing different projects they were working on, including one involving native bees.

“It was a lot of hands-on work,” Laseter said. “It sounded interesting if I wanted to work outside versus in a lab, or a little bit of both.”

A few months later, Laseter learned about the opportunity to do undergraduate research in ecology and conservation in Dunlap’s lab, which specializes in studying the role of environmental variability in the evolution and ecological function of cognition.

“I didn’t even really know that you could work in labs or volunteer,” Laseter said. “I had a friend that took one of her classes, and she was talking about needing research aides.”

The experiences he’s had since joining the lab – and through his extracurricular involvement with the UMSL Environmental Adventure Organization and UMSL Sustainability – enhanced the lessons he gained from his biology professors in the classroom.

Laseter presented research he did alongside fellow biology major Zachary Pfeiffer during the University of Missouri System ’s Undergraduate Research Day at the Capitol in Jefferson City in early April. The two gave a poster presentation highlighting their work surveying small predators in Missouri glades, for legislators in the building’s rotunda. Specifically, they discussed the important role small predators play in controlling the population of herbivores and why it’s so critical for the health of plants and restoring the glades.

Laseter also showcased this work on April 26 during UMSL’s Undergraduate Research Symposium .

On April 30, he and Pfeiffer received the Arnold B. Grobman Award for “outstanding efforts in field biology, ecology, evolution or plant or animal behavior as an undergraduate student” at the Department of Biology’s annual awards ceremony.

Laster credited Hansis-O’Neill for encouraging him to take advantage of those opportunities. She’s been a mentor to him over the past year and a half.

“She’s just tremendous,” Laseter said. “She is a star at what she does. She pushed me to even apply to that job. Without her, I probably wouldn’t be anywhere near where I am today. I want to give her a little thanks.”

Laseter started working part-time for the Department of Conservation this spring, mixing in some field work with online training, as he finished the final few classes he needed to earn his degree.

As a full-time staff member, he is joining the Community Conservation Team, which does conservation work throughout the St. Louis region.

“We actually focus on what we call Tier 1 communities,” Laseter said. “They make tiers for urban areas, focusing on equity, income, racial factors and access to green spaces. We want to improve what little green spaces there are in these Tier 1 communities. So, I’ll be focusing most of my time in these areas to hopefully provide better urban wild acres – these 11 sites around the St. Louis area.

“A lot of them are here in in North County and North City. There are some actually close to UMSL, so I won’t be too far from here if I ever want to come visit.”
