CUHK Business School team wins dual championships at Corvinus Undergraduate Business Experience 2024

cuhk finance phd student

A team of four undergraduate students from the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) Business School, Ivan Cheung (GBS, Year 3), Anson Kee (GBS, Year 3), Bowie Mock (GBS, Year 2) and Sally Ng (GBS, Year 2), recently took part in the Corvinus Undergraduate Business Experience (CUBE) 2024 in Budapest, Hungary, taking home two championship titles after multiple rounds of presentations.

The prestigious week-long event, hosted by Corvinus University of Budapest in collaboration with Corvinus Case Track Community, provided a valuable platform for high-calibre students from 16 top business institutions worldwide to connect and exchange knowledge. The competition consisted of three cases focusing on businesses in Hungary and the European region, allowing all participants to broaden their horizons beyond home.

Despite encountering initial uncertainties and challenges with a case in the trust and safety industry, the team’s dedicated efforts and client-centric solutions impressed the panel of judges, leading them to secure the championship titles in both the two-week and seven-hour case presentations.

In addition to achieving remarkable results in the competition, the team also formed lasting friendships with fellow participants from around the world and had the opportunity to explore Budapest, enjoying its captivating architecture and delectable cuisine.

Ivan Cheung (GBS, Year 3) “I am still mesmerised by the moment when everyone gave their full attention to our final presentation on stage. It substantially bolstered my confidence. This experience taught me that cracking cases is not about throwing out creative solutions. Instead, it’s about learning the company’s capabilities and situation and customising a solution for them.”

Anson Kee (GBS, Year 3) “I am very grateful that our devotion to the competition paid off, not only with the awards but also with valuable learnings in case-solving and exposure to industries we had never heard of before, such as the trust and safety industry. Throughout the competitions, we supported and encouraged other peers from various universities, forming genuine friendships”

cuhk finance phd student

Bowie Mock (GBS, Year 2) “The unique aspect of case solving set CUBE apart from other competitions. Each of the intense and challenging cases was presented with distinct backgrounds and themes. The exceptional networking opportunities allowed me to connect with talented minds from diverse nationalities and learn from their case-solving approaches.”

Sally Ng (GBS, Year 2) “The challenging cases have been intellectually stimulating and exciting to work on, and I truly felt that I’ve improved greatly. It was also an amazing opportunity to form genuine and wholesome friendships with students around the world. The supportive and encouraging environment, even among competitors, was invaluable to me.”

First-ever student graduates from the College’s Impact MBA & Master of Finance Dual Degree Program

By Ava Wald

Rachel Salucci

When Salucci first began her graduate journey, she debated between the Impact MBA and the Master of Finance programs. Having already received her undergraduate degree in finance from the College, she wanted to expand her skillset and eventually landed on the Impact MBA. Just a couple of weeks into her courses, Salucci discovered the dual degree.

While the program hadn’t officially launched, her finance background gave her an advantage, and she added the Master of Finance program to her courseload.

Two degrees, two years

Launched in fall 2023, the Impact MBA & Master of Finance Dual Degree is the first of its kind at the College of Business. Combining sustainable business education with modern finance, students learn how to integrate financial, social and environmental initiatives while developing in-demand skills necessary for success in a variety of fields.

“With the Impact MBA, I was able to use my creativity and gain more critical thinking skills, whereas with the Master of Finance program, I really got to dive into the technical aspects of finance. It was a good balance of both,” Salucci said.

Master of Finance cohort

Not only does the dual degree provide a more efficient and cost-effective option, it also gives students knowledge and skills in two distinct business sectors, allowing them to broaden their networks and have the opportunity to connect with a diverse range of professionals.

“Being able to work with a group of people with such different backgrounds and experiences was really valuable. I learned a lot from the people that I was able to work with in both my Impact MBA cohort and Master of Finance cohort because they all have different skillsets, educations and work experiences,” she said.

Fellowship program offers first-hand experience in sustainable business

Before Salucci began the Impact MBA, she knew very little about sustainability. However, with time she gained a strong command of business challenges and how to integrate sustainable practices to address obstacles. A key part of understanding these methods is learning how to use them in real business settings.

The fellowship program, a signature piece of the Impact MBA, gives students the opportunity to transfer what they learn in the classroom and work with organizations to adapt sustainable business practices. Students often help businesses conduct risk analyses, analyze greenhouse gas emissions or, in Salucci’s case, measure a company’s environmental, social and governance (ESG) data.

For Salucci’s fellowship, she matched with HKS, an architecture firm out of Dallas. The firm was looking to conduct visualization and advanced analysis of their ESG data. It originally planned on hiring a third-party company, but the fellowship program provided a unique opportunity. The prospect of dealing with data analysis and visualization, both of which can be applicable to any job, especially finance, attracted Salucci.

Throughout the fellowship, she worked with several teams within the company to collect data. Salucci aggregated all of HKS’ sustainability data, cleaned it and formatted it into Power BI, a data visualization platform. Within 10 weeks, Salucci had migrated the data into an interactive visual dashboard that the whole company could use.

While she’d worked with organizing Excel data in the past, she’d never had the chance to work with real data and found the experience fun and rewarding.

With Salucci’s visualization, various departments could use the dashboard to understand the environmental and social impact they were making and how they could make improvements.

“I presented the finished dashboard to different teams, and it was their first time seeing the data, so it was really cool to see people’s reactions and interest in it,” Salucci said. “I really feel like I made an impact on that company.”

Looking toward the future

With graduation just around the corner, Salucci looks ahead towards her next steps. She accepted a position with Kiewit Construction as a financial analyst and begins in June, working at their Omaha headquarters in the finance leadership development program.

With a strong passion for finance, she’s excited to begin her role and hopes to bring the skills she’s gained in sustainability and apply them to her position. “I’m hoping to bring sustainability into the conversation no matter where I go because I think it’s really important, and I think that businesses have the largest role in sustainability,” Salucci said.

Family of Glendale junior sues to stop SPS from 'forcing' student to graduate early

The parents of a Glendale High School junior who plans to spend next year studying in France have filed a lawsuit to stop Springfield Public Schools from forcing her to graduate early.

Jeffrey Jones and Julie Rhoads want their daughter, Lily Jones, to be able to return to Glendale in fall 2025 to have a senior year in SPS.

"By denying Lily a senior year, not only would she miss out on the hallmarks of senior year — senior nights, senior awards, banquets, homecoming, senior prom, etc. — but she would be denied many opportunities to earn awards and accolades that offer scholarship opportunities," Rhoads told the News-Leader.

The family has spent more than a year preparing for the 17-year-old to study abroad as a foreign exchange student and communicating with Glendale at various steps along the way.

"The plan was for Lily to finish her junior year in 2024, go to France for the 2024-25 school year then return as a senior at Glendale for the 2025-26 school year," Rhoads said. "That was the plan during all correspondence with her school counselor."

Rhoads said Lily was called to the counselor's office April 5 and told she will not be allowed to return to Glendale for a senior year and since she had met the minimum requirements to graduate already, she was expected to graduate May 18 as part of the Class of 2024.

"She was really shocked. She got brought down to the counselor's office for what she thought was going to be a meeting to tie up loose ends, what do I do with my Chromebook, what happens when I get back, those sorts of questions," Rhoads said.

The family protested but Rhoads said after Glendale Principal Josh Groves confirmed that initial decision days later, the family called Springfield attorney Patrick Baird.

"We've been in talks with her school counselor since the beginning of last school year," Rhoads said.

"There was never any discussion ... that you couldn't go to France and come back. There was never a discussion that you have to graduate in four consecutive academic years. That was never brought up in this 18-month window of time, when we were making all these arrangements."

Baird said the district told the family that since Lily was not earning any credit hours while she studied in France, the district would not get state funding for her when she returned. "They didn't want to do that and so instead of losing funding, they told her 'We're just going to graduate you on May 18.'"

"Glendale for, as far as I can tell, no other reason than funding, does not want her to experience a senior year in high school," Baird said.

He added: "The next step is to make sure that she does not graduate on May 18 and continue to fight so that she can have a senior year."

Asked for a comment, Stephen Hall, chief communications officer for SPS, said: "We are committed to working with all of our students and families to help them achieve their educational goals. When we receive a special request, we must consider our obligations to all stakeholders."

Hall noted the stakeholders include the other students, taxpayers at the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, or DESE.

"There are limits to the extent that we are able to deviate from established protocols when we make a special accommodation for a student. Once a student accumulates the required number of credits, they either graduate early or with their designated cohort," Hall said. "Lines of communication remain open and we look forward to identifying a resolution within the defined parameters of law and other regulations."

'Amazing, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity'

Lily Jones is actively engaged at Glendale as part of the orchestra, book club, World Language Club, National Honor Society and the Missouri A+ Scholarship Program.

"She is a model student, the kind of kid that wants to be there," Rhoads said. "She gets upset when she does have to miss school."

Rhoads said her daughter has studied French for several years and traveled to France during spring break last year. This year, the family is hosting a foreign exchange student from France and next year, Lily Jones plans to be part of the program, living with a host family in that country. Her tentative departure date is Aug 29.

"She's got such an amazing, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to go live with a French family, go to a French high school and have that full immersion experience," Rhoads said.

Rhoads said the family has been told Lily can return to SPS for a traditional senior year this fall or she can graduate and be part of the exchange program, as planned, this fall. "Right now SPS is saying it's either, or ... but you can't do both."

She said if her daughter is not allowed to return for a senior year at Glendale, she will not be able to complete all of the requirements for the A+ scholarship, she will lose her National Honor Society status, and she will not be eligible to take exams to earn Seals of Excellence in core subjects, music and world languages.

"These awards and honors look very appealing on college applications and can lead to scholarship opportunities," Rhoads said.

The family said they hope a compromise can be worked out quickly. A hearing was scheduled for Friday but Baird said that may be postponed.

Private student loan interest rates fall for 10-year loans

cuhk finance phd student

The latest private student loan interest rates from the Credible marketplace, updated weekly. ( iStock )

During the week of Apr. 22, 2024, average private student loan rates decreased for borrowers with credit scores of 720 or higher who used the Credible marketplace to take out 10-year fixed-rate loans and increased for 5-year variable-rate loans.

  • 10-year fixed rate: 9.19%, down from 10.45% the week before, -1.26
  • 5-year variable rate: 8.17%, up from 7.75% the week before, +0.42

Through Credible, you can compare private student loan rates from multiple lenders.

For 10-year fixed private student loans, interest rates fell by over a full percentage point, while 5-year variable student loan interest ticked up by nearly half a percentage point.

Borrowers with good credit may find a lower rate with a private student loan than with some federal loans. For the 2023-24 academic school year, federal student loan rates will range from 5.50% to 8.05%. Private student loan rates for borrowers with good to excellent credit can be lower right now.

Because federal loans come with certain benefits, like access to income-driven repayment plans, you should always exhaust federal student loan options first before turning to private student loans to cover any funding gaps. Private lenders such as banks, credit unions, and online lenders provide private student loans. You can use private loans to pay for education costs and living expenses, which might not be covered by your federal education loans.

Interest rates and terms on private student loans can vary depending on your financial situation, credit history, and the lender you choose.

Take a look at Credible partner lenders’ rates for borrowers who used the Credible marketplace to select a lender during the week of April 22:

Private student loan rates (graduate and undergraduate)

cuhk finance phd student

Who sets federal and private interest rates?

Congress sets federal student loan interest rates each year. These fixed interest rates depend on the type of federal loan you take out, your dependency status and your year in school.

Private student loan interest rates can be fixed or variable and depend on your credit, repayment term and other factors. As a general rule, the better your credit score, the lower your interest rate is likely to be.

You can compare rates from multiple student loan lenders using Credible.

How does student loan interest work?

An interest rate is a percentage of the loan periodically tacked onto your balance — essentially the cost of borrowing money. Interest is one way lenders can make money from loans. Your monthly payment often pays interest first, with the rest going to the amount you initially borrowed (the principal).

Getting a low interest rate could help you save money over the life of the loan and pay off your debt faster.

What is a fixed- vs. variable-rate loan?

Here’s the difference between a fixed and variable rate:

  • With a fixed rate, your monthly payment amount will stay the same over the course of your loan term.
  • With a variable rate, your payments might rise or fall based on changing interest rates.

Comparison shopping for private student loan rates is easy when you use Credible.

Calculate your savings

Using a student loan interest calculator will help you estimate your monthly payments and the total amount you’ll owe over the life of your federal or private student loans.

Once you enter your information, you’ll be able to see what your estimated monthly payment will be, the total you’ll pay in interest over the life of the loan and the total amount you’ll pay back.

From B-School to Tech: Two Graduate Success Stories

Article Icon

  • Business school graduates hoping to break into the tech industry need to be aware of the cultural differences between the two worlds.
  • The question of when you try to pivot into tech matters. Early-career graduates benefit from being more malleable in the eyes of employers, while a late-career shift requires more clearly defined career objectives.
  • If you want to break into tech after business school, the work needs to start early. Growing your network, mastering basic tech skills, and finding a hands-on program are all important considerations.

Yet the worlds of business and tech are very different, and a business degree doesn’t guarantee a successful career in tech. To understand how to bridge that divide, we spoke to two business school students who moved into tech after graduating.

A Tale of Two Cultures: Business and Tech

From 2016 to 2024 , tech has grown in popularity as a destination for business school graduates. But that has caused somewhat of a cultural clash between the two areas.

“That's what the MBA provided: a space where one can develop technical skills, but also the ability and art of communicating with other folks.” —Albert Fattal

“Technology is an interesting culture,” says Albert Fattal, a graduate of the MBA program at California State Polytechnic University Pomona (CalPoly). “It’s a culture which has a historical record of being a bit introverted. As a human being, communication is an incredibly important trait that I suspect many people in technology…can have a tendency of resisting against.”

To counteract this trait, Fattal used his MBA to meet that skills gap in the tech industry. “That's what the MBA provided: a space where one can develop technical skills, but also the ability and art of communicating with other folks.”

Yet the tech culture isn’t just more introverted. Matt DeAmon is a graduate of the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration at Bowling Green State University in Ohio. During a mid-degree internship with a tech giant, he noticed the differences in working practices between business and tech.

“When I was with Amazon, everything happened at breakneck speed,” he recalls. “Requirements are constantly changing and you are at the cutting-edge [of the industry].”

These cultural differences mean that it’s not enough for business school graduates to have business knowledge and interpersonal skills. To succeed in tech, they must also be able to adapt to an entirely new working culture.

Pivoting to Tech: Early Career Versus Late Career

While business schools are increasingly incorporating more and more tech skills into their MBA programs—some even have specialized Tech MBA programs—deep knowledge of the tech industry still often comes from outside the MBA. If you want to break into tech, you still need to work on developing the core skills you’ll need to succeed in the industry.

After graduating from Bowling Green State University, DeAmon moved into an entry-level role at CVS Health. He joined the organization’s IT Leadership Development Program, a two-year program where graduates take on four separate roles across the company, each for six months. He currently works as an AI engineer. DeAmon believes the fact he’s still at an early stage in his career made him more “malleable”—and therefore valuable—in the eyes of his employer.

“For early career grads, the expectation of an MBA isn't necessarily there yet,” he says. “So you can take advantage of that. An employer should say: ‘You've studied what you did in school, and you got a general understanding of what we’re looking for, now let’s teach what you need for us to be successful.’ CVS takes that chance, and it pays off.”

If you want to break into tech, you still need to work on developing the core skills you’ll need to succeed in the industry.

Fattal’s transition into tech was a little different. By the time he went to business school, he was already a mid-career professional. He had more clearly defined career objectives and a good idea of what he wanted to do after his MBA. He used the program as a way of achieving those goals.

“It wasn’t that I was looking for a school that could mold my professional career,” he says. “I very much had specific goals and I felt as though I had a very good understanding of likely what I wanted to achieve.”

Fattal already had his eyes on a career in tech before his MBA—and the program helped him achieve it. He’s now working at the Federal Reserve Bank on data aggregation and automation and supporting the missions and goals of the Fed on an infrastructure level. “There must be a technological ‘do-er’ for all of the Fed’s processes to happen. That’s my role,” he explains.

How to Develop a Career in Tech

Learn the foundational tech skills early.

Although DeAmon developed his tech competencies during his graduate program, he was only able to do that because he had something to build on. He learned the basics of tech early in his college career, and it gave him the platform he needed to work in tech after graduating.

“We did fundamental courses to understand the basics of programming languages, but then in the second half of college I moved to specialization courses which were all in Python. That was the most important skill I picked up at college,” he says.

Start Growing Your Network Now

If you want to break into tech, it helps to know people in tech. That seems fairly obvious to say, but maybe a little harder to do in practice. But according to DeAmon, you don’t necessarily need to know hiring managers or executives. For him, connecting with people who had been through the recruitment process at tech companies was just as valuable.

“By having connections [at Amazon], they made me aware of which skills I should work on during college, how to approach internship providers, how to prepare my resume, how to sell my skills, and generally what I needed to work on,” he explains. DeAmon used that insider knowledge to secure an internship at Amazon, which was instrumental in his professional growth.

Make Use of Internships

With such a cultural disparity between the worlds of business and tech, an internship is a way of bridging that divide. It can give you a little more insight into tech culture and let you know whether it’s right for you. Fattal’s mid-degree internship ended up leading directly to his new career.

“Internships are important, I would imagine, for many folks,” he says. “I did pursue an internship which led to my career at the Federal Reserve. I initially started as a graduate intern in one of their programs. I loved the culture so much that I knew this was the direction I wanted to pursue.”

Look for a Hands-On Program

When you’re considering a career change, getting some practical experience in that new area is more important than ever. Fattal says his time at business school gave him skills he still uses in his career today.

“CalPoly’s ‘Learn By Doing’ philosophy enabled a very unique advantage for folks pursuing these types of studies in a polytechnic university, which is getting your hands dirty with the real tools that are actually used [in the workplace],” he explains. “Not theoretically working on projects, but utilizing real-world outcomes.”

“In my case I pursued the route of economic analysis and technology analysis for securities. So we ended up using tools that would very much be used in the real world. All of this really came together to build a foundation of what my role right now at the Fed was likely looking for.”

Now, Fattal is relishing the opportunity to make an impact in the world of tech. “It’s up to me to build these technologies to support the infrastructure of the Fed. And in a broader sense, perhaps also the impact of monetary policy [in the United States].”

  • Be pursuing a degree
  • Be making adequate academic progress as determined by your school

Before applying for any private student loan, including with Discover, make sure to consider your federal student loan options, as you can often find more favorable terms and better protections through the government.

Discover has a well-reviewed app that has received 4.8 out of 5 stars on the Apple store and 4.6 out of  5 stars on the Google Play store. If you want to manage your loan on the go, this could be helpful.

Discover Student Loan Pros and Cons

  • Cash reward for good grades . You may qualify for Discover's one-time 1% cash reward on its student loans if you get a GPA of 3.0 or higher for any academic term covered by the loan. You'll need to redeem your reward within six months after the loan's disbursement or six months after the academic term has ended, whichever is later.
  • No origination fee . Other lenders charge origination fees which are deducted from your overall loan proceeds.
  • No late fees . If you fall behind on your payments, Discover won't hit you with any unexpected charges.
  • Relatively high APRs compared to competitors . You may qualify for lower rates if you pick a different lender and your credit score is in excellent shape.
  • Only one term length for undergraduate and graduate loans . When you take out a loan with Discover, you'll get a 15-year term length. This limits your flexibility in how you repay the loan — though you can always pay it off early with no penalty.
  • One physical branch . Borrowers looking for in person support will be hard pressed to find it with Discover.

Who Is Discover Best For?

Discover student loans are a great option for borrowers looking to avoid fees — you won't pay any with the company. Additionally, the lender has 24/7 support if you have any questions about your loans.

However, borrowers with excellent credit may find better rates elsewhere.

1. Gather required information . This includes your Social Security number, your school of enrollment, the loan amount you need, your address, and certain financial documents.

2. Fill out the online application . You're apply to complete the application in just several minutes, and after doing so you'll get your rates.

3. Submit required supplementary documents . Discover may need to see financial documents including proof of income and residency.

4.  Sign your loan agreement . After you get all your documents in order, Discover will send you a formal loan agreement. Discover will fund your loan after you sign on the dotted line.

Discover offers student loans for a variety of different types of degrees, including:

  • Undergraduate
  • Health professions

Discover Undergraduate Student Loans

You may like Discover's undergraduate student loans if you want to avoid fees, as the lender doesn't have any prepayment penalties, origination fees, or late charges. However, you may be able to find lower fixed rates with competitors.

You might be eligible for a one-time 1% cash reward available on Discover student loans if you get a GPA of 3.0 or higher for any academic term covered by the loan. You'll need to redeem your reward within six months after the loan's disbursement or six months after the academic term has ended, whichever is later.

Discover Graduate Student Loans

Discover's graduate student loans function similarly to the lender's undergraduate loans. The major difference between the two is the repayment term length; the graduate loans are for 20 years, while the undergraduate loans are for 15 years. You'll still get a loan with no fees and will be eligible for Discover's one-time 1% cash reward on its student loans.

Yes, Discover offers student loans at competitive rates and has around the clock customer service for any questions you have.

Discover does not disclose the minimum credit score it will consider for student loans.

You can borrow up to 100% of the cost of attendance.

While there is always a possibility the company could decide to forgive student loans, the chances are extremely slim. No private loans will likely be forgiven.

The Better Business Bureau rates Discover with an A+ grade , indicating that the BBB has determined that the is company honest in how it handles business, responds effectively to consumer complaints, and is truthful in its advertising.

Discover Student Loans Competitors

Compare Discover Student Loans against the competition.

Discover Student Loans vs. College Ave Student Loans

You can get a lower minimum APR on your loan with College Ave than with Discover, so if your credit is in good shape, College Ave might be the better choice.

College Ave has a quicker application process than Discover, as you can get a rate in a few minutes with College Ave, and it will take roughly 15 minutes with Discover. This may not be a dealbreaker, but if you want to speedily compare multiple rates, College Ave could be a better place to start.

Discover student loans offer a unique perk that College Ave does not. Discover has a one-time 1% cash reward on its student loans if you achieve a GPA of 3.0 or higher during any academic term covered by the loan. You have to redeem your reward within six months after your loan is disbursed or six months after your academic term is over, whichever is later.

You won't pay any origination fees, prepayment penalties, or late fees with either company.

College Ave Student Loans Review

Discover Student Loans vs. Ascent Student Loans

Ascent has five repayment terms available with co-signed loans, five, seven, 10, 12, or 15 years. Discover has only one standard term available, 15 years.

You may be eligible for a 1% cash reward with Ascent and Discover. Neither company charges origination fees or prepayment penalties, but Ascent may charge a late fee while Discover does not.

Why you should trust us: How we rated Discover student loans

We rate all student loan products in our reviews and guides on a 1-5 scale. The overall rating is a weighted average that takes into account seven different categories, some of which are judged more heavily than others. They are:

  • Interest rate (20% of rating)
  • Fees (20% of rating)
  • Term lengths (15% of rating)
  • Repayment options while in school (15% of rating)
  • Borrower accessibility (15% of rating)
  • Customer support (7.5% of rating)
  • Ethics (7.5% of rating)

Each category's weighting is determined based on its importance to your borrowing experience. Rates and fees have the most significant impact on the total cost of your loan, so we weigh those the most heavily. Customer support and ethics are still crucial parts of the borrowing experience, but do not directly tie to a student loan's terms, so they have less of an impact on the overall rating.
