If you’re just getting started with Google Slides, its extensive features and add-ons can be a little overwhelming. Here are some tips to help you get going with this powerful alternative to Microsoft PowerPoint.

If you’ve heard of Google Slides before, feel free to skip ahead; if you haven't, here’s a crash course on what you need to know. We’ll go over the basics and get you brushed up on what Google Slides is and how you can get started right away.

Slides is a free, web-based presentation program designed to compete with Microsoft Office PowerPoint. It's part of G Suite---Google's complete office suite (though some people refer to it all as Google Docs). The other main services included in the cloud-based suite are Sheets (Excel) and Docs (Word).

Google Slides is available on all devices and platforms; all you need is an internet connection and a web browser (or, in the case of mobile, the Android and iOS apps ). Google does the rest and handles the brunt of the heavy lifting, while it runs the software in the cloud.

Slides supports several file types, including  .ppt, .pptx , .odp, .jpg, .svg, and .pdf. This makes it easy to view or convert Microsoft Office files directly from Google Drive or insert images directly into a slide.

And since Slides is an online presentation program, you can share and collaborate with multiple people on the same file, and track revisions, changes, and suggestions, all in real-time.

Before you can use Google Slides, you have to sign up for a Google account (an @gmail account). If you already have one, feel free to move on to the next section. If not, we’ll go over the simplest way to create a Google account and get you set up with Slides.

Head over to  accounts.google.com , click "Create Account," and then click "For Myself."

On the next page, you provide some information---first and last name, username, and password---to create your account.

Also, you have to verify your phone number, so Google can make sure you’re not a bot.

After you verify your phone number, the subsequent pages require you to provide a recovery email address and your date of birth and gender. You must also agree to the privacy statement and terms of service. After that, you’re the proud new owner of a Google account.

Now that you have a Google account, it’s time to create your first presentation. Head over to  Google Slides  and place the cursor on the multicolored "+" icon in the bottom-right corner.

The + turns into a black pencil icon; click it.

Pro Tip: Type 

 into the address bar from any browser and hit Enter to automatically create and open a new blank document.

Even if you’re new to Google Slides, you might already have a collection of Microsoft PowerPoint files you’d like to be able to use. If that’s the case, then you have to  upload all your presentations  before you can view them. While it might not support some of the more advanced features and effects of some PowerPoint presentations, it works pretty well.

When you import a PowerPoint presentation, you can use either Google Slides or  Drive  to upload your files. Both methods let you drag and drop a file from your computer directly into the web browser for easy uploads. Your Drive houses all of your uploaded files, but---for the sake of convenience---when you go to the Slides homepage, it only shows you presentation-type files.

From the Slides homepage, click the folder icon in the top right, and then click the "Upload" tab. Now, drag and drop any files you want to upload directly into this window.

Once the file uploads, Slides opens it automatically, and it's ready for you to edit, share, or collaborate.

To open a PowerPoint presentation that you want to edit, click the filename with the "P" next to it from your Google Slides homepage.

Click to either view the PowerPoint file or edit it in Slides.

After you’ve finished editing your file, you can download and export your presentation back into a Microsoft PowerPoint format. Just go to File > Download As, and then click the "Microsoft PowerPoint" option.

Now that you have a few presentations, it’s time to make sure your  spelling and grammar are correct . Slides is equipped with a spellchecker. If you misspell something, it underlines the error with a squiggly line and prompts you to make a change.

This should be on by default, but you can make sure in Tools > Spelling > Underline Errors.

To see spelling corrections and suggestions, right-click the word with the line underneath. Alternatively, press Ctrl+Alt+X (Windows) or Command+Alt+X (Mac) to open the Spell Check and Grammar tool.

Along with a spellchecker, Google Slides comes loaded with a built-in dictionary and thesaurus. To use them, highlight a word, right-click it, and then click "Define [word]."

One of the best features of Google Slides is its ability to  generate a shareable link.  Anyone you share the link with can view, suggest edits to, or directly edit the presentation. This eliminates the hassle of sending a file back and forth between collaborators. Each person has her own text entry cursor to use on her computer.

To do this, click the orange "Share" button in the file you want to share. Next, choose how and with whom you want to send a link to the file. You can type email addresses or click "Get Shareable Link" in the top corner to hand out the invitation yourself.

From the drop-down menu, you can select one of these options for what other users can do:

  • Off:  Sharing is disabled. If you’ve previously shared a link with others, it will no longer work and revokes any permissions they once had.
  • Anyone with the link can edit:  Gives the shared users full read/write access. They still can’t delete it from your Drive, though---this is just for the contents of the file.
  • Anyone with the link can comment:  Allows shared users to leave comments which is handy for team projects.
  • Anyone with the link can view : Shared users can view the file, but can’t edit it in any way. This is the default action when you share a file, and it's the best option if you’re trying to share a file for download.

When you share documents with others, it’s difficult to keep track of all the small changes that happen if you’re not present. For that, there’s  revision history . Google keeps track of all the changes that occur in a document and groups them into periods to reduce clutter. You can even revert a file to any of the previous versions listed in the history with a click of your mouse.

You can view a list of all recent changes by clicking File > Version History > See Version History. Alternatively, you can press Ctrl+Alt+Shift+H (Command+Option+Shift+H on Mac).

You can also share a link to a specific slide in your presentation with a friend or coworker, without having to mention which one you're referencing. When someone clicks the link and the presentation loads, it jumps directly to the slide you're referencing. You do have to enable file sharing before you can link to a specific slide in your presentation, though.

Because each slide has a unique URL, all you have to do to link to one is click it in the left pane, and then copy the URL from the address bar.

Google Slides also has a character insertion tool. This allows you to insert special characters into your presentation without having to remember any Alt-codes. There are tons of symbols, characters, languages, and so much more. So, whether you want an arrow, different language scripts, or if you just want a few silly emojis to spruce up your presentation, Google Slides makes it easy to include them.

To open the character insertion tool, click "Insert," and then click "Special Characters."

From here, you can manually search for specific characters with the drop-down menus.

Use the search bar to find a specific character or emoji.

You can also use your drawing skills to search.

What happens if you need to access Google Slides but don’t have an internet connection? Although Slides is a web-based product, that  doesn’t mean you can’t use it offline . Any changes you make to the file offline will update the next time you connect to the internet. First, download the extension for Chrome.

To enable a presentation for offline use, go to the Google Slides’ homepage and, in the top-left corner, click the Hamburger menu > Settings. Once here, toggle "Offline" to the On position, and then click "OK."

To save storage space on your local machine, Google only downloads and makes the most recently accessed files available offline. To manually enable a file, click the three dots icon, and then toggle "Available Offline" to On.

Google Slides is usually amazing! But, when it comes to adding mathematical symbols and equations in Google Slides, it just feels like a hassle! If you are new to Google Slides, especially if you are a teacher or a student, you will definitely be left wondering whether you can add equations in Google Slides!

You can use the “Special Characters” option to insert equations in Google Slides. First, click on “Insert”. Then, select the “Special Characters” option from the dropdown. A new window will open up. You can either choose the category or simply search for the symbol by name and build the equation.

In the rest of this article, I will explain how to use the built-in feature and add-ons to add equations in Google slides. I will also discuss adding chemical formulae in Google Slides. So, stick around till the end with me to learn the basics of adding equations in Google slides !

Can you Insert an Equation in Google Slides?

Preparing a slide is nothing complicated If it contains normal text and images. The problem arises when you have to include any mathematical equations or chemistry formulae in your slides. The normal keyboard doesn’t contain any keys for math symbols. Furthermore, the sheer number of these symbols used makes it impossible to add any keyboard shortcuts either.

Luckily Google Slides has an inline feature that allows the users to add symbols. You can write pretty much any math equation and formula using symbols provided as part of the “Special Characters” feature in Google Slides . There was a time when you could write equations in Google docs and add that to your Slide but Google has removed that feature.

Another way to add equations in Google slides is using third-party add-ons. There are a few handy add-ons in the Google workspace marketplace for writing mathematical symbols with ease. These add-ons are full of features and very user-friendly. I shall be discussing a couple of the most useful ones later in the article.

For now, let’s understand how to insert a math equation in Google Slides.

How to Insert Math Equations in Google Slides?

As I’ve mentioned above, there are two methods to insert math equations in Google slides. you can use either. You can use mathematical symbols from the built-in feature or you can use add-ons.

Here’s how you can insert math equations in Google Slides using the built-in feature:

  • Insert a “ Text Box ” on a blank slide. Then, double click inside the text box to be in edit mode.

  • Click on Insert > Special characters
  • A dialogue box will appear.

  • Select ‘symbol’ from the left drop-down menu and ‘Maths’ from the right drop-down menu.
  • You can also search for the symbol directly in the search bar. For instance, if you want to add a “greater than equal to” sign, just type that in the search bar.

  • Insert the necessary symbols to write the required math equation.

Pro Tip! To superscript text in Google Slides , simply click on “ Insert ” and choose “ Special Characters ” from the dropdown menu. Then, in the window that pops up, search for “ superscript “. Choose the text you want to superscript.

How to Write Fractions in Google Slides?

When making a presentation on mathematics, writing fractions is inevitable. Writing fractions on Google Slides is one of the easiest things to do. Google has made this feature so easy that you won’t even need to use the special characters feature.

To insert fractions in Google Slides, simply use the oblique (/) sign on the keyboard between the numbers to convert them into a fraction. You can find the oblique key usually located to the left of the right “SHIFT” key on your keyboard.

Let’s take a look at the detailed step-by-step process –

Let’s say we want to write ‘half’. Do do that, just type one (1) from the keyboard, then oblique (/), and then two (2).

Now, press “Space” or “Enter” and it will be automatically written in fraction form and look like this: ½.

Similarly, if you want to write three-fourth or two-third, write the corresponding numbers and symbols sequentially and they will appear in the fraction form.

If you have add-ons and want to use them, you can do that too. Go to the add-ons tab and select the one you want to work with. But I highly recommend just typing in with your keyboard considering how convenient it is.

Is There an Equation Editor in Google Slides?

Currently, there is no built-in equation editor in Google Slides. However, there are multiple equation editor add-ons that are available. Simply go to Add-ons menu>Get add-ons. In the pop-up, search for equation editor (or Math editor), choose the add-on you like and click install.

Most of the equation editors are third-party and free to use. You can find them on Google workspace marketplace by clicking on the ‘plus (+)’ icon from the right-side panel. You will have to sign in with a valid Gmail account. The add-on will seek permission to see various information or data on your account.

But, you won’t have to worry about that. As they are on the Google workspace marketplace, they are verified by Google and usually safe. They are very user-oriented as well.

Best Equation Editor Plugins for Google Slides

There are several add-ons for writing mathematical terms in Google slides. While all of them are quite good, some are the absolute best. Following are the two best equation editors that I’ve found to be the most useful:

1. MathType

MathType is by far the king of equation editor plugins for Google slide. It’s super easy to use. Even if you are a new user, you can easily write any equation you want. There is a separate section for writing chemical formulas. So, if you are a lab geek, MathType has got your back.

It also supports a touchpad. If you are on a touch-enabled device, you can write any equation using your fingers and MathType will recognize it.

2. Hypatia Create

Hypatia Create is loaded with features. It is user-friendly and publication-quality math can be added to your presentation. It has both Google docs and Google slides add-on. It has integration with MathType and Mathpix for a better user experience. You can also use the LaTeX commands to insert equations.

For using add-ons, do the followings:

  • Open or start a new presentation.
  • Click on the plus (+) icon on the right-side panel.
  • Google workplace marketplace window shall appear.
  • Search for your desired add-on from the search bar.
  • Install the add-on.
  • Now go to the ‘Add-ons’ tab.
  • Click on the one you want to work with (if you’ve installed multiple add-ons)
  • Insert equations.

How to Write Chemical Formula in Google Slides?

There isn’t any built-in feature in Google slides to write a chemical formula. However, you can do that easily by using the MathType add-on. follow the steps below:

  • When selecting MathType, go to ‘Insert/edit chem formula.’
  • You will see various chemistry symbols.
  • The symbols are categorized under different tabs such as Symbols, Arrow’s tab, Matrices, and elementary tab, etc.
  • The first tab has a dedicated periodic table.
  • Use the periodic table and the symbols to write your desired equation.
  • You can use the touchpad to write formulas as well.

Add speaker notes —Use speaker notes to keep track of your talking points for each slide. In the presentation editor, speaker notes appear beneath the current slide. When you present your slides, your speaker notes show in a separate window.

You can also open Slides while Gmail or Google Chrome is open by clicking on the Google Apps icon in the upper-right corner (shown as three rows of dots) and selecting Slides. 

Another option is to download the Google Slides app for your Apple or Android device. Search for Google Slides in the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.

What templates are available? 

Dozens of Google Slides templates are available, depending on your needs. For instance, there are general presentation templates, photography portfolios, pitch decks, case studies, science fair projects, and more. 

To browse the templates available, open Google Slides. Then, click Template Gallery in the upper-right corner. Scroll through the options, choose the one that meets your needs, and start creating a presentation. 

What's the difference between Google Slides and PowerPoint? 

Both Google Slides and PowerPoint are presentation programs. Google Slides is a program within Google Workspace, and PowerPoint is a Microsoft program. PowerPoint is an offline program, while Slides is online which allows for real time collaboration.

The programs share many features that allow for presentation creation and delivery, but PowerPoint may offer more advanced design features. 

You can convert Google Slides into PowerPoint presentations, and vice versa. From the top menu in Slides, click File, Download, and choose Microsoft PowerPoint. 

How to learn to use Google Slides 

Through Google Workspace, you can access several quick-start guides, cheat sheets, and troubleshooting resources to help you learn to use Google Slides. There are also many YouTube videos with tutorials for using Slides.

PowerPoint and Google Slides are two popular options for presentations, but which one is best? As someone who has used both programs for a long time, I've found that Google Slides offers many advantages that make it my go-to choice.

Let's be clear: I'm comparing the web-based PowerPoint and Google Slides versions. It's unfair to compare Google Slides to the desktop version of PowerPoint, isn't it? Here are some reasons why Google Slides is my favorite presentation tool.

1. Ease of Collaboration

Ease of collaboration was the central reason I switched to Google Slides for my presentation needs. As a content creator, I always aim for a seamless collaboration experience while dealing with my clients and team members. Google Slides offered exactly that, and I was in love with it.

So, is Google Slides better than PowerPoint for collaboration? It certainly has advantages that make it an ideal choice for a lot of users.

With Google Slides, you can efficiently work with others and share your work , no matter what kind of computer or phone you use. If you have a Google account and the link to the presentation, you can join in and make changes simultaneously with other members.

In contrast, to collaborate in PowerPoint, you have to consider various external factors, such as the user's working device and storage locations. For example, you might not be able to easily collaborate with someone who has an older version of PowerPoint, or with someone using a PowerPoint mobile due to feature limitations. Some things that are restricted in the free web and mobile version compared to PowerPoint on desktop include limited commenting tags, editing options, and more.

Additionally, Google Slides also has built-in chat and commenting features. This feature allows all your team members to stay on the same page and communicate with each other to streamline editing. In PowerPoint, you're limited to comments only.

2. Offline Access

Another important reason for my switch to Google Slides is the offline access feature. With this feature, you can create, edit, and present presentations to others even without an internet connection. Any changes you apply offline are synced automatically once you're back online, so you can keep working even without an internet connection.

You can activate offline access by checking the offline mode option in your Google Drive settings.

Also, with Google Slides, you don't need software installed on your computer to access your presentations offline. However, Microsoft PowerPoint requires an internet connection to save changes to OneDrive storage. No internet, no autosave!

3. Integration With Other Google Tools

Switching to Google Slides is easy if you already use Google apps like Docs, Sheet, Meet, and Gmail. They all work well together. You can import charts and tables from Google Sheets into your presentations with just a few clicks. Any modifications to the original data in Google Sheets will automatically be reflected in your Google Slides presentation.

For example, on Google Slides, open the "Insert" tab and navigate to the "Chart" option. From there, click on the "From Sheets" option and import a chart from Google Sheets.

Furthermore, you can add Google Keep notes to your Slides and share your content in Google Meet with Smart Canvas without switching between tabs.

On the other hand, Microsoft PowerPoint integrates with other Microsoft tools, but it's not as seamless as Google Slides and has limited integration capabilities. For example, unlike Google Sheets, which updates data automatically in Slides, PowerPoint requires you to manual refresh to update Excel charts. This means you need to copy and paste the updated chart from Excel to PowerPoint.

4. More Storage Space

Google Slides offers more storage space through Google Drive. With a Google account, you get 15GB of storage shared across Google Photos, Drive, and Gmail. This is significantly more than what Microsoft offers with its free PowerPoint Web version, which only provides 5GB of OneDrive storage. If you create large presentations with many images or videos, Google's extra storage space can be a significant advantage.

Additionally, Google offers affordable plans to upgrade your storage if needed. For example, you can get 100GB of storage for a $20 annual fee, which is perfect for those who create and store a lot of presentations. However, it's important to note that pricing for additional storage might be different depending on your region.

For detailed information, it's best to check your plans manually by clicking the "Get More Storage" option in Drive.

5. Compatibility With PowerPoint

I know what you're thinking—what if I need to work with someone who only uses Microsoft PowerPoint? Fear not; Google Slides has got you covered. You can import and export PowerPoint presentations into Google Slides, making switching between the two platforms easy.

This feature has been a lifesaver for me when I work with my clients or colleagues who use PowerPoint. I can easily collaborate with them and edit their files without any hassle. After making changes, I can save the Google Slides file again as a PowerPoint file.

You can add your PowerPoint file to Google Slides by either uploading it on Drive or directly opening it from the File > Open option.

6. AI Features

You can also use Google AI tools like Gemini to improve your presentations. For example, the Gemini AI feature in Google Slides allows users to generate images and slides based on their prompts. You can access Gemini from the Slides side panel and input your prompts, such as "Create a slide about," and it will generate slides accordingly.

This feature lets you quickly add relevant and visually appealing presentation content without leaving the Google Slides platform. Using Gemini AI, you can also generate background images in various styles, such as Vector art, Photography, Watercolor, and others.

In contrast, Microsoft AI feature tools like Copilot are not available on the PowerPoint web version. To use Copilot and other AI features in PowerPoint requires a paid subscription to either Microsoft 365 or Copilot Pro.

7. Provide Detailed Version History

Both Google Slides and Microsoft PowerPoint allow you to view and restore previously edited versions of your presentation. However, Google Slides stands out with its detailed version history feature. This feature groups certain versions of your presentation together if you make multiple changes over a short period. This makes it easy to find and select the version you need. These group versions are displayed under the Version History panel.

Another notable feature of Google Slides is the ability to name the modified versions. This is quite useful when working on large documents with multiple collaborators, as it can take time to find the version you want, among many others. To rename a version, open the "Version History" panel, click the three-dot icon, and then select "Name This Version" from the dropdown menu.

Once you've named important versions of your presentation, you can filter them by selecting the "Named Versions" option from the drop menu. This will highlight only the renamed versions, along with the current version of the document, making it easy to locate the version you need.

8. Customization Features and Template Options

The web version of Microsoft PowerPoint has limited features compared to the PowerPoint desktop app, which can sometimes be helpful while designing presentations. For example, you can't insert charts or equations in the web version. Additionally, you can't add hyperlinks to pictures or shapes. On the other hand, you can add equations, charts, and hyperlinks to images in Google Slides.

While both platforms offer a good selection of templates, I prefer Google Slides because its templates are user-friendly and easy to customize. It also provides more flexibility when working with themes compared to the web version of PowerPoint.

Google Slides isn't a flawless tool, but for me and many other presentation creators, it not only gets the job done but also has some advantages over PowerPoint. Whether you're a student, team, or regular user, you can use it to make clear and effective presentations.

Captions are incredibly helpful while watching videos, not only for those who are visually or hearing impaired but also for those who may have a hard time understanding accents. Sites like YouTube have an option to auto-generate captions even for those videos that don't have them natively, but this isn't true for every website. Thankfully, Chrome offers a tool that can automatically generate captions for any video or audio playing in your browser.

To enable this, go to Settings by clicking the three-dot menu, then from the sidebar, select "Accessibility" and toggle the "Live Caption" option. Some speech recognition files will download to your computer. Once that's done, Chrome will generate captions for any video or audio playing in your browser. By default, Chrome will download files for English, but you can download additional languages and set your preferred language in the same settings.

2 Lock incognito tabs with biometrics

4 Monitor price drops on shopping sites

While Chrome extensions like Keepa and Honey are helpful for online shopping, Chrome now has built-in functionality that lets you track the prices of your favorite products without installing any third-party extensions. To use this feature, go to the product page on websites like Best Buy or Amazon. If price tracking is available, you will see a "Track Price" or a bell icon in the top right corner. From there, simply select "Track Price" to start tracking the product's price.

Chrome will now start keeping track of that particular product's price for you. You can view all tracked products in the side panel, but you can also get notified about price drops. To enable notifications, go to Chrome Settings, select "You and Google," and make sure "Get price tracking notifications" is enabled. This feature is also available on Chrome for Android, where you'll see a similar price tracking pop-up next to the address bar for compatible products.

Here's how to enable Chrome's nifty new price tracking feature

Do you ever feel your computer gets sluggish when Chrome is running in the background? Things take ages to load, animations slow down, and it feels like Chrome is hogging memory. Well, not anymore. Google Chrome has a hidden memory-saver mode that helps both Chrome and your computer run smoothly.

There is a memory-saver mode that snoozes Chrome tabs when they're not in use, thus saving RAM and improving performance. The tabs remain open and reload from where you left off when you return to them. For important websites, you can mark them as exceptions in the memory saver settings.

Similarly, Chrome also has an energy-saving mode that limits visual effects and animations to save battery life. You can set it to turn on automatically when your laptop reaches a certain battery percentage. You can access these modes by going into Chrome settings and then selecting "Performance" from the left bar.

6 Perform a quick safety check

Keep your browsing (and google account) safe and sound.

With online fraud, password thefts, data leaks, and browser malware becoming more common, Google offers a built-in safety tool in Chrome to protect your data and account. The tool, called Safety Check, checks if your passwords have been compromised, looks for harmful extensions, reviews rarely visited site permissions, and overall ensures that your browsing environment is protected against malware, phishing, and other risks.

To run a Safety Check on Google Chrome, click the three-dot button in the top right corner, click on Settings, and then select Privacy and security from the left menu. Scroll down until you see the Safety Check section, and hit Check Now. Chrome will quickly run through some checks to ensure you're practicing good browser hygiene. Once done, you'll see the results of your safety check and can review and address any harmful findings.

Bonus: Download files faster with parallel downloads

If you often find yourself frustrated with slow download speeds for large files despite having a decent internet connection, Google Chrome has a hidden feature called Parallel Downloads that can help. This feature divides large files into smaller chunks and downloads them simultaneously. However, this feature isn't accessible in the Settings of the Chrome browser, and you'll have to enable a Chrome Flag to use it.

To activate this feature, open a new Chrome tab, type "chrome://flags/#enable-parallel-downloading" in the address bar (without quotes), and switch the toggle to "Enabled." Then, relaunch Chrome, and you should see improved download speeds for large files.
