The Best Resources for Learning to Speak Brazilian Portuguese

November 12, 2019 By Josh Plotkin 44 Comments

In this post you are going to get all of the resources you’ll need to learn Brazilian Portuguese from 0 to fluent.

This list is written primarily with the self directed student who wants to learn to speak Portuguese at their own pace. If you’re the kind of person who feels confident taking control of your learning experience and can mesh together your own study plan from a number of different sources then you’ll feel right at home here.

This list, and most of this site for that matter, is written primarily for people who plan on going to Brazil in the near future. Whether that means you’ll be taking just a short vacation to Brazil, whether you’re going on an exchange program or if you plan on living in Brazil long term, you’re probably going to use this page at some point in your efforts to learn Portuguese.

If this is your first time visiting this site I’d invite you to take a look around and see some of the other content that we have on the site. Brazilian Gringo was created to help people like you overcome the initial language and cultural challenges that every foreigner goes through when they move to Brazil.

With that introduction out of the way with, here’s a table of contents that will help you navigate this page and find what you’re looking for.

How to Get Started Learning Brazilian Portuguese

If you’re like the majority of people on this planet, you probably have no exposure to the Portuguese language. You can’t even say hello or thank you in Portuguese. If that sounds like your situation right now then you’ll want to get started by learning some basic phrases.

At this stage in the game you shouldn’t be too concerned with speaking Portuguese with perfect pronunciation. Though pronunciation is important to work on later, at the beginning at least you should just get used to the idea of speaking a foreign language.

Start by taking some basic phrases and say them out loud. You might get embarrassed or judgmental about how you sound, which is perfectly normal. It gets easier to speak Portuguese the more practice you get with it. Right now you’re not speaking for other people, you’re speaking for yourself.

To get started I would use the list at Omniglot to learn basic phrases.  Learn to speak Portuguese by building your confidence one word at a time.

Recommended Courses for Learning Brazilian Portuguese

We’ll break this section up into sections, free courses you can use to learn Portuguese online, as well as paid courses.

Learn Brazilian Portuguese Online for Free

There are a number of free courses that you can use to learn Brazilian Portuguese. Here are my top recommendations:

Duolingo – Duolingo is a language learning app that you can use on desktop or mobile. It’s pretty good for learning vocabulary and learning pronunciation on the go. When combined with conversation practice with Brazilians or classes with a teacher this works out pretty well.

Paid Courses for Learning Brazilian Portuguese Online

There are only two courses that I feel confident telling people they should buy. I’m not saying other courses aren’t good, but I just think that most of them don’t offer anything unique that you can’t get in a free course. The two courses below are different.

The Mimic Method Flow of Portuguese by Idahosa Ness – This course is entirely focused on teaching you how to sound like a Brazilian. This unique approach has you retrain your mouth to move in the way that Brazilians move when they speak Portuguese. I’ve used this methodology to improve my accent and sound more Brazilian. Be warned that The Flow of Portuguese has a high drop out rate for the simple reason that its hard work. But if you are willing to put in the work you will speak Portuguese with a better accent than 99.99% of foreigners. You can read a more in depth review here.

Semantica Portuguese – Semantica offers several different video series that teach Portuguese through engaging stories. There are different series for different levels. You can use Semantica to go from a beginner all the way to being an advanced speaker. Each episode teaches a certain aspect of the language, grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary, slang and culture. I think Semantica-Portuguese is the best Portuguese course on the market, and I may only be a little bit biased because I am the co-host of the second season. Read a more in depth review here.

Portuguese Acceleration Blueprint  – This one is made by Kevin who runs the site LiveinBrazil.org. You have to like his style of teaching to get value out of this course. Check out his free video series and if you like his approach go for it. Otherwise you might prefer to stick with Semantica or one of the free options.

How to talk to Brazilians Online for Free

The best thing that you can do not only for your Portuguese, but also to improve the quality of your experience in Brazil is to connect with Brazilians. The more Brazilian friends that you have, the more enthusiastic you’ll be about learning Brazilian Portuguese. Your enthusiasm for learning will spread to your Brazilian friends and they’ll want to help you learn even more. This is the fastest way to learn.

There are a number of sites online that were created for language learners to connect with other language learners. There are a lot of different options out there, so take your pick or sign up for all of them. Whatever your approach is, I challenge you to get on Skype with a Brazilian in the next 7 days and say something, say anything, even if it’s just ‘oi, tudo bem?’ You’ll thank me later.

  • HelloTalk – My number one recommendation right now for finding Brazilian language exchange partners. This is a free app you can download on your phone that makes it really easy to connect with Brazilians who want to help you learn Portuguese. They have a lot of integrated features which make it easy to use, even if you don’t speak any Portuguese at all. Highly recommended.
  • Livemocha  – Livemocha used to be my top recommendation for finding language partners, but over the years their model has changed quite a bit and they were acquired by Rosetta Stone, a product I don’t have great things to say about.  You can still use Livemocha to connect with other language learners but the interface isn’t as friendly as it used to be.
  • Busuu  – Busuu is another site that connects you to language learners. They also have a bunch of free resources for learning different languages.
  • Italki  – Similar to Livemocha in that it connects you with other language learners, but what makes Italki different is that you can be paid to teach your language. This is a good place for budget language learners to find a Portuguese teacher.

Where to Find Online Brazilian Portuguese Teachers

Once you’re ready to take your Portuguese learning to the next level you’ll want to enlist the help of a professional. Taking classes with a professional teacher will help you make faster progress in the language. I have a few recommendations for where you should find an online Portuguese teacher.

  • Street Smart  – Street Smart Brazil is the market leader in online Portuguese lessons. They’ve been at this for years and have helped hundreds of students become successful Portuguese learners. This experience comes at a premium though and you’ll have to make a serious investment into their classes. Well worth every penny for the quality of their teaching and the results that they’ll help you get.
  • Semantica-Portuguese  – Semantica is known more for their online video lessons than for their Portuguese teachers, but they do offer online classes for their customers. If you’re using Semantica to study Portuguese on your own (which every serious learner should be), and you’re looking for an online teacher, taking classes with a Semantica teacher will help you solidify what you learned by watching their videos.
  • iTalki  – Italki is not only a place to find free language learning partners, but it’s also a great place to find teachers as well. They allow two types of teachers to offer their services on their platform, community teachers and professionals. Professional teachers have some kind of certification and more experience, and anybody can be a community teacher. I recommend interviewing a bunch of teachers on Italki to make sure that your personalities match up well before committing to a package of classes.
  • Verbling  – Verbling used to be a free site that connected language learners, Chat-Roulette style. They’ve changed their model since then and now they’re a platform for finding online teachers. Prices and experience levels will vary, much like Italki.

Brazilian Gringo Portuguese Video Series

I’ve produced a series of videos to address cultural aspects of learning the language, motivation and common mistakes that foreigners make when speaking Portuguese. I have a lot of fun making these videos, and most of the videos I make come from requests from blog readers. If you want to see me make a video, ask me a question via email or by leaving a comment and I’ll probably make one for you.

Podcasts for learning Brazilian Portuguese

  • Dicionário Informal – Whenever somebody uses a word that I’ve never heard before, I check to see if it’s on Dicionario Informal. This is the Brazilian equivalent of UrbanDictionary. For advanced learners, as it’s all in Portuguese.

English-Portuguese Dictionaries and Sites with Phrases Lists

If you’re just looking for some quick phrases, or are looking for an online dictionary to use, here are some sites for that:

Bab.La – A dictionary with translations from Portuguese into 23 languages, with the option of 3 side by side translations.

There’s everything from soccer news articles and opinion pieces to expert commentary to input from social media users. There’s even an interactive element as you can pick your favorite teams, follow their rankings and receive information specific to them.

Use multiple resources

It’s great to start with one resource at first, but using more resources can give you a broader perspective. Each resource has its own style and approach to the language. And if audio tools are available, the voice, accent and inflection of the speakers may also vary significantly.

Practice the four essential components of language

As you study Brazilian Portuguese, try to improve your reading, writing, speaking and listening at the same time to prevent any major weak points in your skillset.

Some resources will be better for practicing one or a combination of these skills. This is another good reason why you should utilize multiple resources.

Study often

If you only study Brazilian Portuguese for one hour on Saturday mornings, there’s a strong chance you’ll forget some of what you learned from week to week. It’s only natural!

Any skill you’re not using can fade. Studying more often can help keep what you’ve learned fresh in your mind and prevent some of the backsliding caused by long gaps between study sessions. Even if you just study for a few minutes each day, it can help keep you on the right track.

Full fluency takes time, but setting smaller goals along the way can help you stay motivated and focused. After all, you might not feel like studying some days, but if you’ve made it your goal to learn five new words each day, that concrete goal may be the extra push you need to keep going.

Utilize your Brazilian Portuguese language skills

You’ve probably heard the phrase “use it or lose it,” which definitely applies to learning Brazilian Portuguese. Using the skills you’ve acquired helps to reinforce them, so try to use your newly acquired language skills as often as possible.

Whether you speak to yourself, find a conversation exchange partner, keep a journal in Brazilian Portuguese or enjoy Brazilian Portuguese books and movies , anything you can do to use your skills can serve as extra practice.

Brazilian Portuguese is widely spoken

Portuguese is a very widely spoken language, with around 263.6 million speakers to date. According to the CIA World Factbook , Brazil is the largest and most populous country in South America with over 218.6 million people as of 2023.

While Portuguese is spoken in many other countries , Brazil has the largest population of Portuguese speakers. If you’re unsure of which variation of Portuguese to study, Brazilian Portuguese may give you an edge because it’s so widespread.

Learning Brazilian Portuguese connects you with Brazilian culture

Let’s face it: Brazil has a lot to offer. Between the music, dance, sports, food , history and natural wonders, there’s so much to enjoy. When you learn Brazilian Portuguese, you can connect with Brazilian culture on a much deeper level.

If you think you love the culture now, imagine how much greater your affection might be once you understand Brazilian Portuguese!

Learning Brazilian Portuguese helps you learn many other languages

Portuguese is a Romance language, which is the same family as Spanish, Italian, French and more. As such, they have similar grammatical rules and vocabulary. Even if you ultimately decide to learn a different Romance language, what you pick up from studying Portuguese will likely give you a leg up in your future language studies.

If this reason isn’t enough to convince you to take up a Portuguese course , here are many more reasons to learn Portuguese .

Having the ability to communicate in the native language will open up a whole new world to you in Brazil.

About carina.

Olá! Meu nome é Carina.

Brazilian Portuguese was established by my passion for teaching languages. I have a degree in Modern Languages and currently taking a postgraduate course in bilingualism and plurilingualism at the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo. I realized that Brazil, a country of many cultures, attracts many people from different parts of the world and people wish to learn the Portuguese language as a way to communicate with family and friends. That is how, during the pandemic, I started offering Portuguese lessons to foreigners through digital platforms.

This experience was game changer for me and I realized that I could offer a personalized and efficient teaching method. With Brazilian Portuguese, I dedicate to teaching the Brazilian Portuguese language in an original approach that is bringing people from various backgrounds together.

The methodology that I used is the Communicative Language Teaching (CLT), which is based on actual communication between students, making learning more interactive and efficient.

Offering group and private lessons of up to four people from beginner to intermediate levels, my students can practice real interaction with other people who are learning the language, in addition to promoting the exchange of experiences and the development of social skills.

Brazilian Portuguese is a company that strives for excellence in everything it does, providing quality and efficient teaching, making the learning of Brazilian Portuguese inclusive, and valuing cultural diversity. I currently have students all around the world, in more than ten different countries (including the Netherlands, Switzerland, the United States, France, Japan, Australia, Canada, etc.) and, I’m constantly looking for ways to improve the lives of each one of you. Brazilian Portuguese, has a great deal to offer the global and Brazilian language education markets.

The Best Brazilian TV Shows to Learn Portuguese

While knowing how to read and write in Portuguese is great, it’s more worthwhile to practice your listening skills so you know what native speakers are saying . And it’s even more interesting when the locals of whichever region you’re visiting can understand you when speaking a foreign language. To be confident with a Brazilian accent, (mainly the Carioca and São Paulo accents), the best solution is to immerse yourself in 100% Brazilian TV shows – a very effective and entertaining (let’s be honest here) method to quickly learn the language.

The Best Brazilian TV Shows for Learning Portuguese

We’ve done our homework (if you can call watching hours and hours of TV “homework”) and have selected some of the best TV in Brazil for you! We also describe how each series can help you learn Portuguese more quickly .

Avenida Brasil

(broadcast in Brazil from March to October 2012)

When the president changes her agenda due to a TV series, you know it’s a good one.  Avenida Brasil is a modern telenovela. In other words, it’s a mix between a soap opera and a mini-series.

What’s it about?

The main character, Rita, loses her mother at a very young age and grows up with her father and rather cruel stepmother. Rita’s life falls apart when she sees this lady in the arms of another man. Right as she’s about to tell her father everything, totally unexpectedly, he’s run over by a car and dies. The stepmother leaves her at the city dump, a locale well known to the homeless in her city. Several years later, Rita takes revenge. She goes back to her stepmother’s house, under the guise of a cook named Nina, and will do anything to get revenge.

Why should I watch it?

We know the telenovela format can be discouraging to some readers. But if you want to learn the language and familiarize yourself with Brazilian culture,  Avenida Brasil is a must-follow series. It has ups, downs, an emotionally charged plot and has kept 38 million viewers on the edge of their seats. Even President Rousseff was hooked on it.

The series will at least give you a conversation topic if you ever visit Brazil (Hey, we all need icebreakers from time to time.) There’s a good chance the show can help you strike up a conversation.

Watch the first episode on Daily Motion

(first broadcast in Brazil in 2005)

This Brazilian TV show is a little dated now, but it still touches on relevant themes: drugs, alcohol, sex, even prostitution. That means that you’ll pick up a ton of Brazilian Portuguese slang ! The story starts with Mandrake, a lawyer in Rio de Janeiro. He specializes in criminal defense, so his job is basically to bail people out of somewhat questionable scenarios, usually involving sex. The lawyer rubs shoulders with the upper classes of Rio de Janeiro – celebrities and other wealthy people from the glamorous city’s drug, prostitution, and nightlife scene.

Why this Brazilian show will suck you in

Well, just like drugs, it’s hard to get out once you start. But the main thing about this Brazilian TV show is its interesting view of Rio de Janeiro. As pervasive as the notion of the favelas being devastated by drugs and prostitution is, Mandrake shows you that they affect all walks of life. American audiences who loved Breaking Bad  and  Better Call Saul   will feel right at home with Mandrake .

Watch the first episode on Vimeo

Filhos do Carnaval

(produced by HBO Latino)

When Rio de Janeiro comes up, the Carnaval and samba usually follow. This is how the stage is set in   Filho do Carnaval.  As you can probably imagine, the picture this series paints of Carnaval is quite different than the one you’re probably thinking of. Here, it’s all about money and the conflicting relationships between fathers and sons.

Anesio Gebara runs a samba school and, at the same time, an illegal lottery. He’s the patriarch of the family, and with age, he finds himself thinking more and more about the estate he’s going to leave behind. Which of his four sons will he leave in charge of the “family business”? That question puts even more strain on this volatile family.

This series couldn’t care less about the glitter and rhinestones of the Carnival.  Filhos do Carnaval  takes you from the preparation of the Carnival to the beat of the samba, but not without taking you to the real-life overflowing cities of Rio de Janeiro. You will find very little glamour here, just realism and from time to time, evil.

Cidade dos Homens

The name might sound familiar to you; Cidade dos Homens (also named City of Men for international releases) is based off of the famous movie, City of God . In this Brazilian TV show, we follow the paths of Acerola and Laranjinha, two childhood friends from a Rio de Janeiro favela run by drug traffickers. The series brings up some powerful topics, like drugs, poverty, and urban violence.

You go through the day-to-day actives as well as the personal evolution of its two main characters in the heart of the favela. Once the second season begins, we’re no longer confronted by two children but rather two young adults grappling with their future and their role in society, much like all of us at one point.

Why you should watch the show and the movie

If you liked the original movie, then this series will definitely draw you in. On one hand, like the film, the series allows you to discover vocabulary you’d never find in a classroom. Favelas aren’t known for their politeness, so you will pick up a lot of slang. Which is great, because you’ll need it on the streets of Rio. But it isn’t all drugs and violence. The series paints a great picture of the comunidades , an integral part of Rio de Janeiro culture.

(produced by HBO and broadcast in 2008)

alice

Alice  is a young woman who one day decides to leave her small village to move to São Paulo. But in the end, the diversity of the inhabitants, the multiculturalism of the gigantic city, the madness of the many characters and the situations Alice is confronted with all help her discover her true self.

Why should I watch Alice ?

This series is a lot like Sex and the City.  However, the culture, the music, and the general life of São Paulo are very different than life in New York City! So there’s a lot to discover with Alice.  When looking at São Paulo, you’ll quickly realize you’re taking in a totally different landscape than that of Rio. It gives you a glimpse at the immensity of Brazil’s most populous city and the multiculturalism of its residents. OK, but for languages, it gives you exposure to a totally different accent, perhaps even the one you should be studying.

Filho da Puta !

(produced by HBO)

filho-do-puta Brazilian TV shows

Filho da puta … We’ll leave the translation of this up to you. Juares Gomez is a soccer referee in Brazil. In other words, he’s one of the most hated people in his country. It goes further though. He’s divorced and is fighting his ex-wife for custody of his son. The series follows the daily life of this ref both on and off the field, portraying a dark yet humorous life. Even how the show is shot, constantly in movement, gives it a sadistic touch. Filho da puta! is a gritty series that covers many common topics in Brazil, their love of soccer, violence in the stands, and ethnic conflicts.

Why we love this Brazilian TV show

If you like soccer and ever plan on talking about it in Brazil, you have to watch this series. After watching Jaures’s torment throughout the series, you will be able to recognize how Brazilians show people they’re unhappy . That’s always good too.

Other Brazilian TV Shows

If you’ve watched most of these Brazilian TV shows (and with a little studying), you should have no problem having basic conversations with Carioca or Paulista speakers, or even dialects around the Amazon region. But if you want more practice, look into these other Brazilian TV shows:

  • Cama de Gato
  • A Grande Familia
  • Mulher de Fases

If you’re an advanced learner , movies are a bit more challenging, so take a look at our selection of the best Brazilian movies to learn Portuguese.

Should be “when the President changes HER agenda” since you do actually mention Brazil’s first woman president by name.

Hello Tamara, Thanks for your message. You are absolutely correct! Sorry we missed that. It has been updated to ‘her’. Thanks for pointing that out. Happy learning!

Under the show Alice, you say that Brasil’s capital is Sao Paulo. This is wrong. It’s Brasilia.

Hi Courtney, You are right, thanks for pointing this out. We corrected the mistake.

In this post, we'll cover 9 fun Brazilian movies and TV series. We'll also show you what you can learn from them.

But first, let's look at how learning Portuguese through watching Brazilian shows and movies is a scientifically-proven learning method.

Learning A Language Through TV and Movies

Research has shown that if you binge-watch a foreign language TV show, you are far more likely to pick up the language and its nuances than if you just study it in a textbook.

This is partly because watching native speakers communicate allows you to pick up grammar and vocabulary in a natural and authentic manner, in context, rather than in isolation.

Moreover, our brains are accustomed to learning languages in this way. When you were a baby, you learned your mother tongue by listening, absorbing, and repeating.

The same logic applies to learning Portuguese by watching Brazilian TV shows and movies. This is known as the "binge-watching method" by Lingopie.

What is Lingopie?

Lingopie is a streaming platform specifically designed to help you learn a new language. It offers many of the best Brazilian TV series and movies for learning Portuguese.

Watching Brazilian shows on Netflix or Lingopie will expose you to slang, culture, customs, and more. So, you can learn the language in an in-depth way.

There are a plethora of fantastic Portuguese language TV shows on Netflix and Lingopie to explore. Let's break down the best Brazilian TV series and films for language learning on Lingopie.

1. João Heleno dos Brito

homework in brazilian portuguese

This short movie follows João Heleno dos Brito on his quest to end a family feud and fulfill a promise to his dying godfather.

Our hero has a reputation to uphold as he navigates bloody fights and vicious enemies to keep his word. A single bullet was enough for his godfather to kill four armed men, but can João Heleno dos Brito live up to his legacy?

You may have watched a few Brazilian movies in your time, but have you ever seen a Caruaruense (from Caruaru, Brazil) spaghetti western before?

This is an entertaining and gripping film and has a run time of just over 20 minutes.

What You'll Learn

This is a great watch because it is fun and offers a lot of opportunities to practice listening for the imperative mood.

Moreover, several grammatical tenses are used in monologues throughout the film.

2. Santa Fumaça (Holy Smoke)

homework in brazilian portuguese

This short film is an animation, and it has the look of a vintage 90s cartoon.

It depicts Brazil's private criminal faction of hit men, but it falls more into the genre of comedy than crime drama.

Two hitmen are tasked with the killing of a tough guy, but when one of the men starts smoking a joint, things don't quite go to plan...

Santa Fumaça depicts the underground world of hired guns in a comically irreverent and light-hearted manner. It will help you to pick up on Portuguese vocabulary relating to drugs, arms, and childhood dreams.

This is one of the best Brazilian short movies on Lingopie, as it offers ample opportunity to pick up on new slang words and colloquialisms. These are important for sounding authentic and more like a native speaker.

Once you are comfortable with the basics of Portuguese, it is a great idea to sprinkle the slang that you have learned into your spoken language. This will help you to sound less like a textbook and more natural.

homework in brazilian portuguese

This Brazilian TV show is the story of two young people finding love under challenging circumstances.

Teenager Maya has systemic lupus and is forced to spend her days inside her house, missing school and dreaming of a better life.

Maya begins to live out her fantasies by writing stories. She aspires to be a famous author, but for the moment she is more than happy to write for her number one (and only) fan, Luke.

This drama has an excellent balance of technical and literary vocabulary.

Maya writes in the past tense and third-person. This is the most common choice in both fiction and nonfiction books, so offers good practice for reading comprehension.

The focus on her health and needs means several common medical terms are featured.

A sick young woman meets a boy and falls in love... sound familiar?

This show has a very similar feel to The Fault In Our Stars. So, if you loved that book and movie, Maya will be the perfect watch for you.

Seeing two young people overcome hurdles and find one another is the most beautiful thing, after all.

4. Leme in Love

homework in brazilian portuguese

Mariana comes back from studying in England to spend her vacation in Rio with her friends.

Except Mariana finds that she and her friends are on very different paths. They are all dating and have less time for her.

When she develops a plan to fix everything, Marina finds that interfering in her friends' relationships doesn't bring them back to her.

This is a coming-of-age story of sorts, about accepting that people and things change, but that it's not necessarily a bad thing.

This Brazilian series features several friendships and romantic relationships.

You will pick up on how young Brazilians communicate casually, and learn gossip vocabulary and words relating to romance and friendship.

Traveling to Rio de Janeiro?

This show has a lot of great shots of some of the best Brazilian beaches, located in Rio de Janeiro, which will get you in the mood for your vacation.

We recommend that you watch TV shows on Netflix or Lingopie that are set in Rio to absorb the slang, sites, and customs to get ready for your trip.

5. O menino leão e a menina coruja (The Lion Boy and the Owl Girl)

homework in brazilian portuguese

This is one of the best Brazilian movies on our list for children. The short film features people in animal costumes living by the rules of the animal kingdom.

In this world, cubs must study at the Wild Cub School and learn how to get along.

So, when Lion Boy is mean to Owl Girl, he owes her an apology and must pay her a visit in the middle of the night.

This short film offers a simplified explanation of the theory of evolution, a look into the animal kingdom, a reminder to celebrate what makes others different, and a set of rules for good playground etiquette, making it a good watch for young learners.

On top of that, you can learn how to say a good apology in Portuguese and revise your animal vocabulary.

6. Num Pulo: Brazil (In a Jiffy: Brazil)

This documentary is one of the best Brazilian productions about the splendor of the country.

It takes you on a journey through the paradisiacal beaches, ecosystems, and marine biodiversity of Brazil.

You will discover life and nature in Brazil and experience its incredible, clear waters and wildlife through world-class cinematography.

This is one of the most educational of the 9 best Brazilian movies and shows on our list, as it is a documentary.

You’ll learn the words for Brazil's stunning landscapes, flora and fauna, and main attractions.

7. Monalisa

homework in brazilian portuguese

This Brazilian show follows Monalisa, a hardworking young woman who is searching for the love of her life.

She thinks she has found it in Eduardo, but when the magic fades she realizes she might not be finished looking.

We see Monalisa navigate the two worlds of work and home and how her relationships in these worlds shape her life.

This comedy is a great watch to pick up vocabulary about dating and household items and uses intermediate-level Brazilian Portuguese.

8. Desaventureiros (Unadventurers)

homework in brazilian portuguese

This is one of the strangest of our 9 best Brazilian TV shows and movies, as many of the characters are mythical creatures.

Our protagonist, Vic Voice-of-the-Wind, leads a group of second-class adventurers, including a communist dwarf, a socially awkward rogue, an elf, a one-eighth-orc “cleric”, and a man called Vegan Bull, on a quest to prove that being a bard is a valid career choice.

In this comedic fantasy TV show, typical fantasy tropes are poked fun of and explored from a unique Brazilian point of view.

You can develop some niche vocabulary, such as Companhia do Dragão Bronzeado, which means "bronze dragon company".

9. Poster Boy

homework in brazilian portuguese

Last but not least on our list of the best Brazilian shows and films is Poster Boy.

Former child star of toothpaste adverts, Victor, discovers he has a fan.

This is an unusual boy meets girl tale and offers a fascinating insight into the psychology of child actors in real life.

Poster Boy features a lot of vocabulary about the entertainment and art industries. There is a scene in which several people voice opinions on Victor’s past and present, which serves as a good study of giving opinions and using different tenses.

Pay attention to the different tones that people speak.

Brazilian TV Shows and Brazilian Culture

An important part of learning a language is learning about the places where it is spoken, including the history, music, and customs of a place.

This allows you to develop a better understanding of the people, society, and arts that you will be engaging with.

By binging the best Brazilian shows on Netflix or Lingopie you are not only developing your language skills but building cultural and historical awareness of this country where Portuguese is spoken.

There are many TV shows on Netflix as well as Lingopie that give viewers a great insight into Brazilian culture, some of which are listed below.

If you like this, you'll also enjoy The Kissing Game. With a Black Mirror -like twist, school girls find that they are transmitting a virus to one another via a kissing game they play.

Reality Z (the Brazilian version of the British series "dead set")

One of the most entertaining Brazilian shows on Netflix, Reality Z follows reality show contestants who are faced with a zombie apocalypse in Rio.
