About Complex Sentences
Once you can identify a basic sentence, you can join two or more sentences into complex sentences. Two or more sentences can be combined with a subordinating conjunction that explains the relationship between each idea.
For example:
Simple Sentences - He studied hard. He wanted to go to medical school. He suffered from arthritis.
Complex Sentence - He studied hard because he wanted to go to medical school as he suffered from arthritis.
Complex Sentence - Even though he suffered from arthritis, he studied hard because he wanted to go to medical school.
Notice how the subordinating conjunction adds additional meaning to the sentence. The last two sentences tell us why he studied.
Some Common Subordinating Conjunctions :
A subordinating conjunction is sometimes called "a heart word" because it turns two sentences into one. Even though both sentences contain a subject and verb, one becomes dependent on the other and cannot stand alone. One sentence becomes the explaining idea for the main idea.
Any time you see words like the ones above, check that your sentence doesn't leave a question remaining.
For example:
Wrong - When he came late to class. (What happened when he was late?)
Right - He forgot to give the teacher his homework when he came late to class.
Wrong - After she noticed it missing. (What happened when she noticed?)
Right - The teacher asked for his homework after she noticed it missing.
Wrong - Because they knew the test would be difficult. (What happened as a result?)
Right - The students studied furiously because they knew the test would be difficult.
Punctuation depends on the location of the subordinating conjunction:
If the subordinating conjunction comes in the middle or at the end of the sentence – no comma is required.
Wrong – School is not all about studying, since there are lots of clubs and fun activities on campus.
Right – School is not all about studying since there are lots of clubs and fun activities on campus.
If the subordinating conjunction comes at the beginning of the sentence – a comma comes at the end of the dependent clause.
Wrong – Even though I would rather go to the beach I went to the library to study.
Right – Even though I would rather go to the beach, I went to the library to study.
How to fix Complex Sentences:
1) Look for the subordinating conjunction or "heart word."
2) Does the subordinating conjunction come at the beginning of the sentence?
Wrong – Some students skipped studying, because the weather was gorgeous outside!
Right – Some students skipped studying because the weather was gorgeous outside!
If the subordinating conjunction comes at the beginning of the sentence – add a comma at the end of the dependent clause.
Wrong – Since it's hard to resist a sunny day some teachers hold class outside!
Right – Since it's hard to resist a sunny day, some teachers hold class outside!

Hi: I hear that my brother is still writing his homework, so I express my surprise and disapproval by saying: -Hasn't he finished the homework yet? But If I say : -Has he finished the homework yet? What it would express? Thanks.
Liam Lew's
It would mean "Has he already finished his homework?"
As you say, the first expresses disapproval. The second is a simple question without any judgement. (neither approval nor disapproval)
Thanks. yet= until now and already=previously, but here as Liam Lew's said : yet=already. is it only in that context or we could use it in that meaning as one of its usage?

Abbott Elementary
Classroom to classroom: meet 7-year-old genius from houston set to appear on 'abbott elementary'.
HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- At what age would you say you were able to comprehend math? How about when you learned how to read? A Houston mother, Natasha Fisher, told ABC13 that she realized her 7-year-old son, Kevin Fisher Jr., was gifted from an early age.
"I thought kids were doing the things he did," she said.
The things he did?
Starting at the age of 2, Kevin, who likes to go by KJ, was able to read, and by the age of five, he was completing two-step equations, which is middle school level. However, along with his bubbly personality and brilliance, Kevin continued to excel in several subjects, including his favorites, math and science.
Not only did his parents see his accelerated learning path, but his teachers did, prompting them to suggest KJ could skip to third grade. Although he tested well for it, KJ went to 2nd grade, where he is still given advanced work.
Moreover, his parents enrolled him in the Stafford STEM Magnet school to support his academics, where he can use his major love for math and science in third grade during the 2024-2025 school year.
Of course, he kept going. With his knowledge and ability, KJ's mother submitted test scores to the Mensa Society, where KJ was accepted as a member.
Mensa is a non-profit organization that has been around for decades and is open to individuals with high IQs or people who score in the 98th percentile or higher on standardized tests or other approved tests.
At 7 years old, KJ's IQ stands at 137, whereas the average IQ for a child his age is 100.
So what else can this second grader do? There are only a few things, like his YouTube channel, "ThaKidTeacher," where he teaches viewers how to do algebra and teaches his viewers all things science.
He also plays piano and basketball and has tried his hand at acting.
Just like academics, KJ took the acting world by storm. He is signed to the Neal Hamil Agency in Houston and Dreamscope Entertainment in Los Angeles.
He has starred in three commercials and is expected to make his acting debut on an episode of ABC's "Abbott Elementary." In addition, he has a short film coming out in June 2024.
Yet, athleticism runs in the family, as his mother, Natasha, is a track coach and former Olympian, and his father coaches high school basketball. Nonetheless, they knew they could water the 7-year-old's talents elsewhere.
"I knew he was not a big fan of sports, so I tuned in on his memory and love for the stage and put him into acting," KJ's mother said.
KJ spoke of the 'Abbott' set in glowing terms when asked how he felt about it.
"It was fun. There were cameras everywhere, and I met two new friends," KJ said.
What's next for the brilliant young Houstonian? He says he wants to be an astronomer, an engineer, a scientist, or an artist.
You can catch KJ's acting debut on an all-new episode of "Abbott Elementary" on Wednesday on ABC13 at 8 p.m.

Gordon Monson: Utah’s new NHL team has no name yet, but the real question is, will it have game?
Reports are indicating trademarks have been filed anonymously for names like utah blizzard, utah venom, utah fury, utah hockey club and utah yetis..
(Rick Bowmer | AP) Workers put up signs celebrating the sale of the Arizona Coyotes and its accompanying relocation to Salt Lake City, at the Delta Center on Thursday, April 18, 2024, in Salt Lake City. The NHL team will be known as Utah, at least initially. New owner Ryan Smith says the name will begin with Utah and he does not want to rush the process of rebranding the franchise upon relocation.
What’s in a name? Apparently, more than what the average Joe and Jane might think. That’s what Ryan Smith figures, considering he said on Thursday that he will take his own good, long, deliberate time to come up with a proper handle for his new NHL team.
There will be no rush to name this baby.
Smith, indeed, is like that parent who’s perfectly willing to call his newborn “Baby X” for an extended period, in this case maybe for a year or longer, to get the moniker just right. He’s the dad that needs to get to know the infant, to look into its eyes, to see its face, to study its mannerisms and personality before bestowing that blessed title.
It doesn’t seem like it would be all that complicated. There are plenty of strong, cool names to choose from. Many of us have offered up suggestions, rock-solid ones that would work perfectly. I’ve offered 50 in a column already, 51 — if you include the one suggested by a reader who likes Screaming Eagles, in honor of Utah Beach and the heroic contributions of the 101st Airborne during the Normandy invasion.
Gladiators has a nice formidable ring to it. Black Diamonds is fine. Scorpions, good. Raptors, uh-huh. Ice-O-Topes, not so much.
But, really, what’s the hangup, Ryan? Let’s name the kid, right here, right now, while we’re all young. Let’s get it done.
Nope, he’s not budging. Some people are like that. We’ll be patient alongside, we’ll wait.
Reports are indicating trademarks have been filed anonymously for names like Utah Blizzard, Utah Venom, Utah Fury, Utah Hockey Club and Utah Yetis, but whether that means anything significant is yet uncertain.
Nobody wants Smith to hurry into a mistake, like, say, oh, I dunno, changing a team’s colors from classic purple to yellow and black, transforming the favorite and familiar standard into a team that looks like a roped-off police action or a mustard smear. Actually, yellow and black, done right, aren’t all that bad.
One thing the proud new owner did acknowledge is that the team name would be the Utah Whatevers, not the Salt Lake Whoozits, which is no huge surprise on account of the fact that Smith himself does not live in Salt Lake City and he in his doings as a Utah native has a habit of talking up the whole state, not just its capital city. He wants everyone from Snowville to St. George, from Vernal to Wendover, and points in-between and beyond, to find connection to his new team. He wants everybody in the pool and around the ice and proud to buy tickets and gizmos and gear.
Regardless of what the squad will be called or when it will be called it, there is advice the team needs to hear and take. Not just the players, but Smith all the way to the ushers, to the managers, the coaches, every individual involved in the operation.
A fellow named Sean Kuraly was talking during a recent season-ending interview, saying good stuff, stuff folks the Utah Whatevers need to hear, need to process, need to give thought to and put into action.
If you don’t know who Kuraly is, it’s time to start getting acquainted with him and some 700 other active players around the NHL. He’s nobody’s star, just a forward, a dude who worked his tail to get to the NHL and to stay there. But the 31-year-old vet with the Columbus Blue Jackets — a team that, like the Coyotes-turned-Whatevers, did not qualify for the playoffs this season, a team with a steep climb in front of it — was asked about the ongoing success of another team, the playoff-qualified Boston Bruins, and what he learned back when he played for them.
That success translates, Kuraly pronounced, to every team willing to make the sacrifices necessary to win on the reg. This is what he said of the Bruins and winners like them, teams the Whatevers want to model themselves after moving forward:
“It’s like a machine that’s hard to start and it’s hard to stop. No matter who’s coming in and who’s going out, it takes a hell of a lot of work to get it going and build it. And it takes a lot of … um, it takes less to keep it going than it does to start it. That’s what they’ve got there. That’s, as an organization, where you’re looking to go. How do you start that? It’s one piece at a time, a little progress [at a time]. That’s what we’ve got to do. We’ve got a ton of work in front of us. There’s no secret there. The results, the consistent results, come from consistent actions. It can look amazing and a miracle from the outside, but if you’re in those walls on a daily basis, it’s just one foot in front of the other. But each day you’ve got to take a step.
He added: “You look in the mirror. We’ve all got to be better. … As a player, you get a locker room full of men at the beginning of a season and you set expectations for yourselves and you try to meet or exceed them.
“I think it’s something we’re going to have to work to build. We’ve got a long way to go. … You want to be a consistent playoff team. You can say that all day, that’s hot air. So, we’ve got a lot of work to do.”
The Whatevers have a lot of work to do, as well. We’ll see where Baby X goes from here.
But Kuraly added one other thing. He gave credit to the Blue Jacket fans, who arrived en force, despite the team’s troubles, on and off the ice, this go-round.
He said: “The story of the season is our fans. This season, our fans have shown through. [It wasn’t] the product we wanted to show them at all times. But were we impressed with how they showed up on a nightly basis.”
Yeah, it’s not just what’s in a name, but what’s in a game. And Utah fans will reveal how they feel about their new Whatevers soon enough.

‘I know my voice’: New BYU basketball coach Kevin Young displays blend of confidence, humility
Young said becoming an nba head coach has ‘never actually been my dream’.
By Jay Drew
Just as there are different ways to win college basketball games, there are different ways to win introductory news conferences.
New BYU basketball coach Kevin Young didn’t win Wednesday night’s presser at the Marriott Center in the traditional fashion by making bold proclamations about victories and conference titles. He wasn’t the showman that his predecessor, Mark Pope, was at his re-introduction to BYU fans in 2019 at the BYU Broadcasting Building or his attention-grabbing event at Kentucky last Sunday.
“I mean, developing guys has been a huge part of every place I have ever coached at and these guys are hungry to get better. That has been obvious as I have talked to them.” — BYU basketball coach Kevin Young
Young took a more humble, understated approach — which befits his personality, those close to him say . But he still pulled it off, impressing the intimate gathering by using the right blend of confidence, humility and, of course, drawing upon his vast NBA experience and ties to the best league and players in basketball to assure BYU fans that athletic director Tom Holmoe found the right guy for the job.
From whence does that confidence spring?
“The fact that I have already been a head coach, that this isn’t my first time doing it, is massive,” the 42-year-old father of three said after the televised portion of the introduction had concluded. “I have a lot more comfort with how I want to do things. I know my voice. I don’t have to find it. I have done it before for years, so that is a big part of jumping out and setting the tone early.”
Of course, Pope was known for his hyperbole, using words such as “super” and “amazing” and “incredible” and “unprecedented” in just about every interaction with media members and fans. That’s not a complaint. The man was good copy, as we say in the newspaper business.
If there was anything that Young said that could be considered a bit over the top, it was that his goal was to make BYU the “best place” to get college basketball players to the NBA.
That was bold, considering BYU hasn’t had a player drafted since Jimmer Fredette went 10th in 2011 . Brandon Davies, Eric Mika, Kyle Collinsworth and Elijah Bryant all appeared in at least one game in the NBA as undrafted free agents, and plenty of former Cougars have found success playing overseas in the past 15 years, but Young will have to recruit better than his predecessors to establish BYU as a pipeline to the NBA.
He assured fans and the media that the ability to develop players is a big part of his repertoire as a coach.
“I mean, developing guys has been a huge part of every place I have ever coached at and these guys are hungry to get better,” he said, having previously noted that he met with BYU’s current players in the locker room before the news conference. “That has been obvious as I have talked to them. They are just dying to get better, dying to have a little specificity and what that looks like for each one of them. And so I will lean into my experience doing that at a high level with these guys as well.”
What was Young’s message to the 2023-24 roster, which has already seen Aly Khalifa, Dallin Hall and Richie Saunders enter the transfer portal?
“I told all of them in the locker room (that) the things you were able to accomplish your first year in the Big 12 were absolutely remarkable,” Young said. “I can’t wait to have every one of you back in a BYU uniform and get to it. Make no mistake about it, my first priority is those guys.”
Another of Young’s best attributes is his ability to communicate, and that quickly became evident Wednesday night.
“I think where I have been able to make headway there is just how I communicate with the players,” he said. “What I have learned at the NBA level is that clarity is king.”
At the news conference, Holmoe mentioned that he has had Young on his radar for quite some time. Young’s name has been on that list he keeps in the top drawer of his desk at the Student Athlete Building, even if the family man with five siblings seemed out of reach for BYU the past few years due to his NBA pedigree and rapid ascension in the pro coaching ranks.
“Kevin is not someone who just came to us out of the blue,” Holmoe said. “We have had our eye on him for quite a while. … Kevin is a remarkable fit here at BYU. He understands what we’re all about here at BYU.”
One of the bigger surprises of the night was Young answering a question posed by Patrick Kinahan of the KSL Sports Zone about putting “on hold” his perceived goal of becoming an NBA head coach by saying that was never really his ultimate dream.
“As it relates to the NBA, and the dream, and so forth, truth be told it was never actually my dream to be a head coach in the NBA,” he said, while acknowledging he had been on the NBA head coaching interview circuit recently. “I love basketball. I love working with young players. I love developing players. I love building relationships. And again, to be able to do all those things at a place that has the family atmosphere that I so desire for my kids and my wife to be around, it actually became a really easy choice.”
