Movie review 'Kick 2': The first kick was better

kick 2 movie review

Cast: Ravi Teja, Rakul Preet Singh, Ravi Kishan, Rajpal Yadav and Tanikella Bharani Director: Surender Reddy Rating: 3 stars Six years after the hit film Kick, Ravi Teja and director Surender Reddy have come up with Kick 2. The film starts with Ravi Teja Sr. talking to Shyam about his son Robin Hood (Ravi Teja Jr.) who becomes a doctor. They settle in the US and Robin Hood wants to come to Hyderabad to check their land here, but his father says that it has been grabbed by a local goon. Once he lands in Hyderabad, he meets writer Chaitra (Rakul Preet) and she falls in love with him because of his attitude.

Meanwhile, a village called Vilaspur in Bihar is under the control of local goon Solomon Singh Thakur (Ravi Kishan). The villagers are suffering a lot and looking for a deliverer from Thakur. They think Robin Hood is the correct person and the villagers plan to bring Robin Hood to their village. What is their plan and does it work? Watch the movie to find out. Director Surender Reddy has come up with Kick 2 on the heels of the blockbuster Race Gurram. While he knows that entertainment always works, in this film he has injected a dose of sentiment, especially in the second half. The first half of the film, however, is full of entertainment, while the second half is all about action and the drama.

The railway station scenes are not very convincing. One can’t understand why a train comes only to drop and pick up Ravi Teja. There’s no one else in the station. Vakkantham Vamsi’s story is not as inspiring as the first film. When it comes to performance, it is Ravi Teja all the way. At this age, he is still dancing away and his energy levels are impressive. He has lost weight and looks fit. He carries the film on his shoulders with his typical dialogues and accent.

Rakul Preet Singh is pretty and looks good as Chaitra. She has done her part well as she portrays two characters, one a modern lady and the other, a Rajasthani girl. It seems that Ravi Kishan is going to be Surender Reddy’s go-to bad guy as he has roped him in for the second time after Race Gurram. Other actors like Rajpal Yadav, Sanjay Mishra, Tanikella Bharani, Ghibran and Ashish Vidyarthi have provided able support.

Brahmanandam plays a key part once again as he has done often. He makes you laugh with his histrionics as Pandit Ravi Teja. The scenes between Ravi Teja and Brahmanandam are hilarious. Thaman’s music is good and a few songs are picturised and choreographed well. The photography is neat and good. The action scenes too are good but a bit stretched. Kick 2 offers some entertainment here and there. It’s a typical Ravi Teja film with his mass dialogues and action, which attracts the front benchers. But when compared, Kick was far better than the sequel.

kick 2 movie review

Now streaming on:

"Kick-Ass 2" is one of the year's worst films. I would like to get that pertinent fact out of the way before we discuss it properly. But for those with horrid taste in cinema, questionable politics, and terribly short attention spans, i.e. the target audience of this movie, I feel it is my duty to say: Don't see this film. Do something else. Enjoy the final days of the summer. Solve a crossword puzzle. Call grandma. Do whatever you like. But don't see this reprehensible movie.

Criticizing superhero films tends to put the reviewer slightly lower on the ladder of popularity than the bloke that shot Bambi's mother. These films have a tightly knit audience. If a critic takes a superhero movie seriously and chastises it for its shortcomings, fans pounce with the age-old mantra: "It's only a comic book film!" But if the critic dismisses a superhero movie, the fans shout: "There is real meaning to this work, and you are biased." As such, the critic can't win. Why is it possible to soberly dissect melodramas, thrillers, even comedies—is it because they rank as "high culture," and are therefore immune to petty, juvenile arguments? Or is it because superheroes have somehow become the embodiment of popular culture and consequently impossible to doubt, for fear the whole lot may crumble away?

I believe the latter to be the case. The superheroes present a very simple solution to the complexities of the modern world. The various shades of grey that line the surface of apparently "deeper" superhero films, such as Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy, are mere distractions from the utter ridiculousness of the core concept: a man in a costume fighting crime! As such, taking superhero fare seriously amplifies both its absurdity and fascist overtones. The word fascist is frequently misapplied, but it does fit with the superhero aesthetic, which is about one thing and one thing only: violence. Superheroes overpower their opponents with brute force, and as such are the most hideous display of power-worship.

Directed by Matthew Vaughn and based on the work of former enfant terrible of comics, Mark Millar , 2010's " Kick-Ass " was a transgressive take on the superhero concept, exploring a world where comic book nerds of various ages and intellects donned skin-tight costumes to fight mobsters. The film's philosophy and its approach towards justice was problematic, but Vaughn had a deftness of touch that propelled the story. Equally interesting was the pairing of Nicolas Cage and the then pre-teen Chloë Grace Moretz as Big Daddy and Hit-Girl, respectively. This father-daughter team of benevolent psychopaths was a highlight not necessarily because of the characters, but because of the obvious quirkiness of the actors and their chemistry. On the whole, though, "Kick-Ass" wasn't a very good movie.

What sinks "Kick-Ass 2" from the level of a merely terrible end-of-summer movie to the depths of utter junk is its wanton disregard of the very basic difference between right and wrong. Written and directed by Jeff Wadlow , the film kicks off a few years after the end of the previous film. The 17-year-old high-schooler Dave Lizewski ( Aaron Taylor-Johnson ) still midnights as the titular hero, all the while trying to convince the orphaned 15-year-old Mindy a.k.a. Hit-Girl to join him. When he is finally turned down, Dave joins with Colonel Stars and Stripes ( Jim Carrey )—an ex-mobster turned crime fighter, around whom a ragtag group of vigilantes has mobilized in an orgy of self-affirmation.

Meanwhile, Mindy joins a group of her own when she hangs up her purple Hit-Girl outfit, and starts to attend high-school: a triumvirate straight out of " Mean Girls ," who take her under their wing for "re-education."

A further subplot involves Chris D'Amico ( Christopher Mintz-Plasse ), former sidekick to Kick-Ass, who has gone into the family business after Dave murdered his mob-boss father in the previous film in a particularly spectacular manner. Chris refashions his mother's S&M gear into a costume, and reinvents himself as the world's first super-villain, adopting a name which, in the '80s, would have been dubbed on British television as "The Melon Farmer." These three plots plod along in a tale of vengeful one-upmanship to eventually converge in one of the least interesting action scenes of recent times.

At its most basic level, the film feigns concern towards how revenge can be a bottomless pit. Violence doesn't merely escalate in the film, it consumes all. The level of terror multiples geometrically, as one death begets two, and then four, etc. Millar's original comic is considered by halfwits as a post-structuralist work, but this sort of reading is only valid for armchair proponents of even the real-world history of violence being its own fiction. Of course, this is all rubbish. The uneven tone of the violence contributes to the confusion. During one memorable scene (for all the wrong reasons), a gigantic ex-KGB agent called Mother Russia dispatches ten police officers in increasingly violent ways as a sped-up, trance version of the Tetris theme plays. I am not sure what reaction Wadlow was going for, but I was sickened. This did not make me reassess my position towards vigilantism or violence, seeing as I am not a sociopath. I don't need a superhero film to tell me that kicking the living crap out of people is wrong.

So there is a pitch, an angle to all this, but frankly, it's hackneyed. Rejection of authority, ignoring the squares, being your own man, the idolization of the self: yes we've all become depressingly familiar with those tired old refrains. We can do anything we want; there is nothing holding us back; and we're just boring and irrelevant if we don't sign up. This is not the '90s, and it's definitely not ten years ago, either. We're in a post-crisis economy. The only people who would buy into "Kick-Ass 2"'s insipid afterthought of a philosophy occupy the same counter-cultural bubble as Wadlow and Millar, whose film expects blithely that no one could possibly disagree with these self-evidently correct beliefs. It's all rather insulting.

Also insulting is the film's view towards women and girls. I was not expecting the film to treat them as transcending their circumstances and being worshipped as life-giving earth mothers, but was it really necessary to have three girls vomiting and defecating simultaneously? Also, it would have been OK to have at least one female character that was not a complete buffoon or in need of validation through male acceptance. The film's misogynistic take on women reaches its apex in a rape scene that is played for laughs. Wadlow keeps the camera tight on the wannabe rapist's face at first, and stays on him as he masturbates furiously to try to get an erection. All the while, there is a woman in the corner, fearing the worst. But Wadlow refuses to cut to her: our attention is on the potential rapist. Wadlow's mastery of film grammar is generally questionable anyway, but someone should have had words with him about this scene. Possibly his mother.

Also icky is the sexualization of Chloë Grace Moretz, a trend that began in last year's " Dark Shadows " and continues here, where the hormonal vagaries of Mindy's body are brought to the screen in fairly graphic ways (I was surprised to discover that the boy-band who inspires her sexual awakening is in fact real). Grace has been good before, but here she seems to be mimicking emotions she was yet to experience, rather than acting. Considering how grating Christopher Mintz-Plasse's and how bland Aaron Taylor-Johnson's personae are, her subpar performance is particularly conspicuous.

By the end of "Kick-Ass 2," Dave is redeemed by the "perfect," virginally pure, specimen that is Mindy. This betrays a further fascist motif inherent in the narrative. Throughout the film, it is unclear quite what Dave is thinking when he stares at his perfect, Aryan sidekick. The eerie sexual prompting surrounding her takes on an additional political burden. By the end, Dave is defending Mindy, the racially pure, against the unwanted attentions of the outcast portion of society. And Mindy, like a cross between a Smurf and a Valkyrie, is wreaking vengeance herself. This is post-structural fascism, with the hint of the past fueling the engine of violence. But the two kiss at the end, so it's all good, I suppose.

"Kick-Ass 2" is a badly made film with a nonsensical plot, lackluster performances, confusing action, excessive violence, and deplorable morals. Avoid it at all costs. If you have a date this weekend, and they want to see it, avoid them, too. Forever.

Kick 2 review

Release date : August 21, 2015

123telugu.com Rating : 3.25/5

Director : Surender Reddy

Producer : Nandamuri Kalyan Ram

Music Director : SS. Thaman

Starring : Ravi Teja, Rakul Preet Singh, Ravi Kishan, Brahmanandam

Kick 2 is one of the most awaited films in the recent times. Directed by the talented Surender Reddy, this film has Rakul Preet as the female lead and has hit the screens today. Let’s now see how it is.

Robin Hood(Ravi Teja) is a doctor who comes to India to solve his land disputes. There, he meets Chaitra(Rakul Preet) and falls in love with her. One fine day, Chaitra is suddenly kidnapped by some goons and Robin Hood is left helpless.

As time passes by, Robin Hood finds out that Chaitra is kept hostage in her native village called Vikaspur. He decides to take things in his hand and heads to her village to save her.

Twist in the tale arises when he crosses path with Suleman Singh Thakhur( Ravi Kishan) who is troubling the villagers with his vicious activities. Rest of the story is as to how Robin Hood saves the villagers from the evil clutches of Suleman Thakur and also wins his love.

Plus Points:-

Undoubtedly, Ravi Teja is the biggest asset of the film. Right from the word go, it is his strong screen presence that holds the film together. The mass Maharaja is quite hilarious during the first half and gives a balanced and emotional performance in the second.

Rakul Preet gets a meaty role and suits perfectly in both the village and modern avatars. Her chemistry with Ravi Teja is crackling and lights up the screen. First half of the film is quite entertaining and has all the elements which are expected of a typical Ravi Teja film. Brahmanandam’s track with Ravi Teja and their comedy episodes evoke superb laughs.

Yet another major plus point of the film is Thaman’s thumping background score which elevates the film to another level. Second half of the film gets high on emotions. The film takes a new dimension post interval and the last twenty minutes have superb mass elements. Ravi Kishan is fearsome as the main villain and does a pretty decent job.

Minus Points:-

Even though the film is high on emotions, the second half lacks basic entertainment. Audience who come in with certain expectations associated with comedy in the Kick franchise might get slightly disappointed. The first fifteen minutes post interval is boring and stretch the film unnecessarily.

Yet another major drawback of the film is the predictable nature of the script. There are no twists and turns where you tend to get surprised with the proceedings. Ravi Teja looks way too slim in certain scenes.

Kick 2 moves on a single thread and does not give much scope for comedy in the second half. Length of the film is a tad too long as many scenes could have been easily edited.

Technical Aspects:-

Surender Reddy’s films have always been high on technical values and Kick 2 does not fall short of its expectations. Camera work is stunning as the rustic villages have been showcased in a superb manner. All the locations chosen look natural and bring a specific flavor to the film. Editing is below average as many scenes could have been removed to make the film crisp.

Dialogues are pretty good and suit Ravi Teja’s body language well. Thaman’s music is superb as all the songs have been shot exceptionally well. Screenplay is a bit predictable but catches pace during the end. Kick 2 looks quite grand and credit should go to producer Kalyan Ram for not compromising on the production values of the film.

Coming to the director Surender Reddy, he had a huge responsibility of repeating the Kick magic which he manages to an extent. This time around, he gives due importance to emotions and deals the film on a serious note.

On the whole, Kick 2 is yet another mass Ravi Teja film which has entertainment and emotions in equal doses. But lack of basic entertainment in the second half let’s down the film to an extent. However, a hilarious first half, beautiful songs and Ravi Teja’s strong screen presence in the film over shadow these flaws and decently entertain you with its emotional content.

'Kick 2' Review: Only Discomfort

'Kick 2' Review: Only Discomfort

Movie: Kick 2 Rating: 2.5/5 Banner: NTR Arts  Cast: Ravi Teja, Rakul Preet Singh, Brahmanandam, Tanikella Bharani, Rajpal Yadav, Ravi Kishan, Sanjay Mishra, Ashish Vidyarthi, Kovai Sarala, Posani Krishna Murali, Nora Fatehi and others Story: Vakkantham Vamsi Music: S.S.Thaman Cinematography: Manoj Paramahamsa Editing: Gautham Raju Action: Ram-Laxman Art: Narayana Reddy Producer: Nandamuri Kalyan Ram Screenplay and Direction: Surender Reddy Release Date: August 21, 2015

Ravi Teja, the mass maharaja for Telugu audiences and Surender Reddy who has given the highly entertaining Race Gurram, come together once again after six years for Kick 2. Ravi Teja has mentioned in one of the interviews that Kick 2 will start the trend of franchise films in Telugu. Let’s see how the film’s come up…

Story: In the first part of Kick, Ravi Teja was portrayed as a sort of Robin Hood who steals money for a right purpose and does everything in life for the sake of some ‘kick’. The sequel focuses on his son who is named after Robin Hood.

Robin (Ravi Teja), a doctor, comes down to India to settle his land issue in Hyderabad as some realtor has grabbed his land. While he is on that, he meets a beautiful writer Chaitra (Rakul) who is narrating some stories to a producer. Chaitra likes the attitude of Robin Hood and falls in love with him. Meanwhile, in Vilaspur, a village in Bihar, the villagers are looking for a God-like person who could rescue them from the atrocities of the local ruthless don Solomon Singh Thakur (Ravi Kishan).

One of their villagers sees Robin Hood beating a big rowdy over a small issue feels he is the god who they are looking for. How will he bring Robin Hood to their village and make him fight against the Thakur? What plan does the entire village hatch to bring him to their place?

Artistes’ Performances: Ravi Teja looks lean to put it in short. Given that his new look is still debatable, let’s skip that for another day. As for his performance, he is his usual energetic self and like the first part, he carries the entire film on his shoulders. Of course, there are hordes of character artistes and villains which has become a norm these days, but Ravi Teja pulls off the film with his charisma.

Rakul Preet Singh is a good choice for Chaitra. She looks good dancing around in Europe and is equally at ease being a village belle in Vilaspur. Of course, she also adds the much-needed glamour to an otherwise drab second half.

Director Surender Reddy repeats his villain Ravi Kishen once again for the film and this time he plays Solomon Singh Thakur or ‘son of god’ as he calls himself. With blue lenses, he does look intimidating and he too carries off his part convincingly.

Jil villain Kabir, Tanikella Bharani, Raajpal Yadav, Sanjai Mishra and others are part of the ensemble cast. They all play their parts as per the requirements of the script.

Posani Krishnamurali has a blink and go cameo along with Kovai Sarala. And director Surendra Reddy too puts in a brief cameo in the hero’s introduction scene.

Technical Excellence: The film’s music is by Thaman who comes up with an upbeat album overall. The first half has a couple of interesting songs and Ravi Teja and Rakul’s duet is hummable. The second half has situational songs and there is also an item number by Nora Fatehi.

Vakkantam Vamsi writes a story that is the usual ‘leave your brain at home’ sort of script that has all the elements of a mass film. Well, that said, the first half is entertaining, while the second half gets a bit stretched as he tries to establish the story with some lengthy scenes. Here, one feels that editor Gautam Raju should have been a little reckless and chopped them into shorter scenes.

Once again director Surender Reddy tries to make an entertainer that will cater to all audiences who love to laugh and get their ticket’s worth. Of course, he is successful to that end in the first half, but the second half kind of tries the patience of the audiences in places.

Highlights:

  • Cinematography
  • Thaman’s songs
  • Some hilarious scenes in the first half
  • Outdated story
  • Lethargic screenplay
  • Lack of entertainment post interval
  • Lacking novelty factor in each aspect of the movie
  • Lengthy runtime

Analysis: The reason why director Surender Reddy joined the league of top directors was because of his ability to blend entertainment into an action story seamlessly and package it with glossy technical values.

Both “Kick” and “Race Gurram” became blockbusters for this reason. But he seemed to have left his ammunition at home before entering on to the sets of “Kick 2” as the movie lacks good comedy and right action.

Major problem with the movie is the clichéd storyline written by Vakkantham Vamsi. The story is similar to the Mahesh Babu starrer “Khaleja” but this one has illogical scenes, poorly written characters, fill-in-the-gaps comedy.

Surender Reddy’s “Kick” had offered us good fun, and nice sentiments. The character of the Ravi Teja in the film was well developed – a kick seeking thief trying to fool the cops, all for a good cause. He takes up the cause and turns “hero” voluntarily. In this film, the hero has no personal “issue” to deal with, and he is made “hero” by others.

When Ravi Teja said he does anything for ‘kick’, it sounded well in the first part but when he mouths that he seeks only “comfort” but nothing else, the catch phrase doesn’t ring rightly. There lies the problem too.

Not only script is bad, narration by Surender Reddy is also not effective. Compared to the comedy we have seen in Kick and Race Gurram, this one is not that great. Yet, as astrologer Pandit Ravi Teja, Brahmanandam offers some good laughs.

First half is comparably better than the second half one thanks to some comedy.

Best part of the movie is pre-climax episode and the visuals filmed on the Vilaspur Railway station. A nice tribute to Sergio Leon’s Once Upon a Time in the West (1968), the look and visual frames were perfect in these episodes.

A better screenplay, better entertainment would have made some difference to this predictable story. All in all, Kick 2 is not half good as the original Kick.

Bottomline: Kick 2 lacks Kick

‘Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga’ Review: A Lonely Avenger

The fifth installment of George Miller’s series delivers an origin story of Furiosa, the hard-bitten driver played here by Anya Taylor-Joy.

  • Share full article

In the driver’s seat, an angry-looking Taylor-Joy is shrouded in shadow except for her eyes. Through the windshield, the War Rig and a fire can be seen in the distance.

By Manohla Dargis

Dystopia has rarely looked as grim and felt as exhilarating as it has in George Miller’s “Mad Max” cycle. For decades, Miller has been wowing viewers with hallucinatory images of a ravaged, violent world that looks enough like ours to generate shivers of recognition. Yet however familiar his alternative universe can seem — feel — his filmmaking creates such a strong contact high that it’s always been easy to simply bliss out on the sheer spectacle of it all. Apocalypse? Cool!

The thing is, it has started to feel less cool just because in the years since the original “Mad Max” opened in 1979, the distance between Miller’s scorched earth and ours has narrowed. Set “a few years from now,” the first film tracks Max Rockatansky (Mel Gibson), a highway patrol cop who has a semblance of a normal life with a wife and kid. That things are about to go to hell for Max is obvious in the opening shot of a sign for the Hall of Justice, an entry that evokes the gate at Auschwitz (“Work Sets You Free”). You may have flinched if you made that association, but whatever qualms you had were soon swept away by the ensuing chases and crashes, the gunning engines and mad laughter.

Miller’s latest and fifth movie in the cycle, “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” is primarily an origin story that recounts the life and brutal, dehumanizing times of the young Furiosa (Anya Taylor-Joy), the hard-bitten rig driver played by Charlize Theron in the last film, “ Mad Max: Fury Road ” (2015). Miller’s magnum opus, “Fury Road” is at once the apotheosis of his cinematic genius — it’s one of the great movies of the last decade — and a departure narratively and tonally from the previous films. In “Fury,” Max still serves as the nominal headliner (with Tom Hardy taking over for Gibson), but the movie’s dramatic and emotional weight rests on Furiosa, her quest and her hopes.

As befits a creation story, “Furiosa” tracks Furiosa from childhood to young adulthood, a downward spiral that takes her from freedom to captivity and, in time, circumscribed sovereignty. It opens with the 10-year-old Furiosa (Alyla Browne) foraging in a forest close to a paradisiacal outpost called the Green Place of Many Mothers. Just as she’s reaching for an amusingly, metaphorically ripe peach, her idyll is cut short by a gang of snaggletooth, hygiene-challenged bikers. They’re soon rocketing across the desert with Furiosa tied up on one of their bikes, with her mother (Charlee Fraser) and another woman in pursuit on horseback, a chase that presages the fight for power and bodies which follows.

The chase grows exponentially tenser as Miller begins shifting between close-ups and expansive long shots, the raucous noise and energy of the kidnappers on their hell machines working contrapuntally against the desert’s stillness. While the scene’s arid landscape conjures up past “Mad Max” adventures, the buttes and the galloping horse evoke the classic westerns from which this series has drawn some of its mythopoetic force. Max has often seemed like a Hollywood gunslinger (or samurai) transplanted into Miller’s feverish imagination with some notes from Joseph Campbell. The minute Furiosa starts gnawing on her captor’s fuel line, though, Miller makes it clear that this wee captive is no damsel in distress.

Furiosa’s odyssey takes a turn for the more ominous when she’s delivered to the bikers’ ruler, Warlord Dementus (a vamping Chris Hemsworth), a voluble show-boater who oversees a gaggle of largely male nomads. Wearing a billowing white cape, Dementus travels in a chariot drawn by motorcycles and keeps a scholar by his side. He’s a ridiculous figure, and Miller and Hemsworth lean into the character’s absurdity with a physical presentation that is as outlandish as Dementus’s pomposity and (prosthetic) nose. It’s hard not to wonder if Miller drew inspiration for the character from both Charlton Heston’s heroic champion and the Arab sheikh in the 1959 epic “Ben-Hur,” a very different desert saga.

The power of the “Mad Max” movies partly derives from how Miller supercharges the kinds of stories that are passed from family to family, tribe to tribe, culture to culture, the ones that are embedded in our heads and chart our paths, whether we know it or not. Yet while Miller is a modern mythmaker, he remains tethered to the world — the machinations and conflagrations in the movies at times queasily mirror our own — and it’s worth noting that he’s also a physician. (He was the set doctor on some “Max” movies.) His background helps explain, I think, his attention to the human body, most obviously in the flamboyant stunt work that has become a series trademark, and his delight in showing the whirring parts of bodies, machines and ecosystems — how they work .

Furiosa’s own body is very much at the center of this movie, which shifts directions when, after some power plays and narrative busywork, she lands in the Citadel, the heavily guarded fortress the character fled in “Fury Road.” There, she is herded with some cloistered young women, handmaidens whose sole function is to bear children for Immortan Joe (Lachy Hulme), the Citadel’s leader. It’s also there that Furiosa, still a child (and still played by Browne), catches the eye of one of Immortan Joe’s spawn, a hulking predator whose designs on her jolt the story into a different, unsettling register. Miller, smartly, doesn’t overplay this section — and Furiosa evades this creep — but it’s still a shock to the system.

The shock lingers, and darkens the story precipitously. To survive, Furiosa escapes her would-be molester by obscuring her identity and joining the ranks of the Citadel’s chattel workers. She melts into the crowd, and years pass as the scenes blend together and a determined, sympathetic Taylor-Joy steps into the role. There’s more, lots and lots: Furiosa shaves her head and finds a mentor in a driver, Praetorian Jack (Tom Burke, the louche heartbreaker in Joanna Hogg’s “The Souvenir”). Together they and armies of minions journey to hot spots like the Bullet Farm, where Miller dazzles you with his customary pyrotechnics as he finesses the pieces — Immortan Joe and Dementus included — into place.

It takes a while to get used to Taylor-Joy as Furiosa, partly because Theron originated the character with such a distinct mixture of raw anger and deep-boned melancholy. Theron also looked like she could kick everyone’s butt in “Fury Road”; she more or less kicked Max’s, at least metaphorically by becoming the series’ new totem. Taylor-Joy doesn’t (yet) have her predecessor’s physical expressiveness, but like Theron, she trained as a ballet dancer and moves beautifully, with the kind of unforced gracefulness that suggests she can easily slip out of any difficulty. Taylor-Joy’s Furiosa may look too physically slight to handle the Armageddon, but that sense of vulnerability of course serves the story.

My guess is that Miller chose Taylor-Joy as his new Furiosa in part because of the actress’s large, wide-set eyes. They’re enormous; they’re also mesmerizing. They lock your own gaze down, commanding your attention, never more so than when the actress is looking up with her head bowed. It’s an angle that accentuates the whites of her eyes, which shine especially bright in the Citadel’s sepulchral lighting. (Jack Nicholson perfected this menacing technique in “The Shining,” which is why it’s called the Kubrick Stare.) The effect can be greatly destabilizing, creating uncertainty about the character and what kind of hero she’ll prove to be.

Furiosa’s reticence is strategic, as well as a trait she shares with Mad Max himself, the model for her taciturn avenger. While Furiosa is hiding in plain sight in the Citadel, her circumspection protects her, but it also accentuates her existential plight. She’s alone, spiritually and in every other respect, at least before meeting Praetorian Jack (not that they’re chatty). Hers is a lonely burden and, as the story and the fighting continue, it gives “Furiosa” a surprising emotional heaviness which can make this exciting, kinetic movie feel terribly sad.

Scene for scene, “Furiosa” is very much a complement to “Fury Road,” yet the new movie never fully pops the way the earlier one does. As it turns out, it is one thing to watch a movie about warriors high-tailing it out of Dodge on the road to nowhere. It’s something else entirely to watch a woman struggle to survive a world that eats its young and everyone else, too. Miller is such a wildly inventive filmmaker that it’s been easy to forget that he keeps making movies about the end of life as we know it. It’s a blast watching his characters fight over oil, water and women, yet while I’ve long thought of him as a great filmmaker it’s only with “Furiosa” that I now understand he’s also one kick-ass prophet of doom.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga Rated R for dystopian violence and intimations of child predation. Running time: 2 hours 28 minutes. In theaters.

  11. Kick-Ass 2 movie review & film summary (2013)

  12. Kick 2 Telugu Movie Review

Kick 2 looks quite grand and credit should go to producer Kalyan Ram for not compromising on the production values of the film. Coming to the director Surender Reddy, he had a huge responsibility of repeating the Kick magic which he manages to an extent.
