Names of the applicants accepted for admission will be uploaded on the PhD page of the program website (accepted and waitlisted etc.).

When the name of the candidate appears on the website as selected, the candidate has one month to accept or decline the admission offer. Structure of the admission test

The test will have two sections. The first section is mandatory for all applicants. It will test their general aptitude, basic analytical skills, understanding of academic integrity and ethical practices in research, and statistical literacy.

Syllabus for the first section:

Numerical abilities: Grade 10 mathematics as per CBSE/ICSE/International school boards

Academic integrity and research ethics:  What is academic integrity and why is it required?

What is plagiarism (including self-plagiarism)? Citing, summarizing, paraphrasing and quoting others’ work. https://usingsources.fas.harvard.edu/

Responsible conduct of research: For any epidemiological/intervention based/ investigative/observational studies involving humans: http://www.who.int/ethics/research/en/

Statistics: Empirical methods in science, constructs and their operationalization into variables, continuous and discontinuous variables, scales, reliability and validity, frequencies, distributions, central tendencies:  Mean, median, mode; measures of dispersion; graphical representation of data;  correlation and covariance;  standard normal distribution; sampling error of the mean and standard error; hypothesis testing; Type I and Type II errors; t-tests; chi square test; ANOVA (all types, including post hoc tests and corrections); and regression (simple and multiple); non-parametric statistics; confidence intervals, power analysis, and effect size.

Rather than mathematical derivations and formulations, questions will test applied aspects of these statistical concepts. You will be tested on

  • Your  ability to interpret graphical data
  • Spot data inconsistencies and errors on graphical representations
  • Understanding of errors than compromise reliability and validity of a study
  • How to operationalize constructs into variables
  • What sort of experimental designs merit which kind of statistical tests to be applied

Statistical skills involving latent variable modeling (in various forms), meta-analysis, and time series analysis will not be tested.

The second section will be grouped into five subsections out of which candidates will choose any three. Questions will be grouped according to the core domains in psychology: Biological, Developmental, Clinical, Social, Cognitive and Measurements and Methodologies. This section will follow the syllabus of the subject GRE test in psychology. Please use the following link to obtain the syllabus and sample questions.

https://www.ets.org/s/gre/pdf/practice_book_psych.pd f. The following textbook might provide a good starting point for preparation:

Passer, M. W., & Smith, R. E. (2004). Psychology: The science of mind and behavior (2nd ed.). New York, NY: McGraw-Hill.

There are also several commercially available study guides which can help you prepare for this part of the test regardless of your academic background.

The PhD program will include academic and research training as well as ethical and career development training. The first two years (one year, in case of M.Phil./ M.Tech. entrants) will be heavily tilted to coursework and professional development and career planning workshops. Students need a minimum of 24 coursework credits to advance to PhD candidacy in year 3.   To maintain good academic standing in order to receive your fellowship, all PhD students are required to maintain a minimum GPA of 7.5 (i.e. A minimum grade of B- or above) for all coursework .

From third year onwards, gradually the research components will start to predominate, and years 4 and 5 will be more or less research centric. Three activities will be suggested for all PhD students through their tenure at the Department of Psychology at Ashoka University.

  • Psychology Journal Club: Every week a student will present a journal article. Attendance is mandatory for all PhD students. Senior students will present in the earlier part of the academic year for the newer entrants to learn from their peers
  • Graduate research seminar in Psychology: Every week two students will present their own research in front of the department. Attendance is mandatory for all PhD students and all faculty members are encouraged to attend the weekly GRS
  • Teaching assistantships: Each student will serve as graduate TAs in a course in consultation with the thesis advisor every semester starting from the beginning of second year. The particular arrangements will be worked out by the advisor and the department on a case by case basis.
  • Individual Development Plan(IDP): Every year, starting from the first year, students will submit an individual development plan to the PhD coordinator and the advisor by October 1 of every academic year. This will serve as a roadmap to the upcoming year for the student, and will be reviewed as part of their annual progress review. Further resources on how to think about an IDP is available online and some guidelines are provided below. The students will receive more guidance on this as they enroll in the program

Duration of the PhD program: For candidates with M.Phil or M. Tech, the duration of the PhD Fellowship is 4 years. For every other entrant, the duration of the PhD fellowship is 5 years. The PhD curriculum has been developed within this framework.

Major Milestones in the PhD program:

  • Qualifying exam at the end of year 2
  • Thesis proposal defense and advancing to candidacy year 3
  • Thesis defense at the end of year 5
  • If student/trainee is unable to clear the qualifying exam or the thesis proposal they will be asked to leave.

Elaborating the milestones briefly:

phd psychology in india

  • After the students have been selected for admission, they will actively correspond with the potential thesis advisors and finalize this by a process of mutual agreement. This should be completed as soon as possible but no later than July 1, 20xx for a September 20xx admission.
  • Familiarize yourself with the proposed project(s) you will be working on for the first two years of your PhD. One of these could potentially become your dissertation project.
  • Using the time between selection and enrollment, the prospective student is encouraged to think and formulate a plan for their tenure at Ashoka University. Sample but not exhaustive pointers to think about could be
  • What are your strengths? (academically, and non-academically) How will these strengths become complementary to your advisor’s expertise for the project(s) discussed?  How well do you fit in to the research group?
  • What are your weaknesses? (academically and non-academically). How can you improve yourself in these areas using the resources and the PhD experience at Ashoka University?
  • How well do you understand ethical issues for responsible conduct of research and academic integrity? If there are gaps, which areas do you need to address first?
  • What are your short term and long-term goals? How can the PhD Program at Ashoka University help you attain those?
  • What parallel skills can the program give you in addition to theoretical and technical expertise directly related to your PhD program?

All these will be essential in writing your Individual Development Plan (IDP) at the very beginning of year 1 and every subsequent years. This is a program requirement and cannot be waived for any student.

Psychology at the Master’s level was introduced in Delhi University in 1957 under the Department of Philosophy and Psychology. The Department of Psychology as an independent department was established in 1964 under the headship of Late Prof. H.C. Ganguli.

The Department has two units, one at the North Campus and the other at the South Campus  established in 1981. At the North Campus the courses offered are M.A. Psychology and Ph.D while at South Campus the course offered is M.A. in Applied Psychology.

The University of Delhi, in order to cope with the ever-expanding student population, evolved a concept of multi-campus system during the early seventies, resulting in the establishment of South Campus in 1973. One of the objectives for its establishment has been to avoid replication of the existing course and provide necessary diversity in the programmes offered by the University at both the campuses.

Keeping this in view, a number of new inter-disciplinary and applied science courses were started at the South Campus and the Psychology Department started the M.A. Applied Psychology Course at the South Campus. In its endeavour to widen the horizons of the Social Sciences, Applied Psychology Course was designed to train the professional psychologists to serve in hospitals, organizations and counseling centers as well as the advertising and marketing research agencies.

In recognition of its achievements in teaching and research, the University Grants Commission (UGC) identified this Department as Department of Special Assistance (DSA) in 1989. The two thrust areas identified are Cognitive Psychology and Applied Social Psychology. Two phases of the DSA Programme (10 Years) have been completed. Recently in 2015 UGC has recommended the Department for SAP (Special Assistance Programme). Department of Psychology was awarded “Second” position in the event “Awards for good practice” during the Antardhwani-2013 organized by the University of Delhi, Delhi.

The Department has a total strength of 13 teaching faculty out of which currently there are 5 Professors, 3 Associate Professors and 5 Assistant Professors. This includes 1 Professor, 2 Associate Professors in the Applied Psychology Unit at the South Delhi Campus. The teaching and research programme is supported by the technical staff at different levels. Apart from the Student Laboratory, meant for the practicum work for the students at the Master’s level, we have a few research labs, equipped with necessary amenities. The Seminar Room is equipped with the State-of-the-Art facilities. Presently the best and latest technology gadgets have been procured and set up to enhance the teaching and research activities. One of the strength of the teaching programme is to establish interface with Industries and Organizations working in varied domains as hospitals, NGOs, Corporate Sectors etc. The M.A. Psychology and Applied Psychology Courses include the latest trends in Psychology, with emphasis on practical training and field work.  The courses lay special emphasis on the acquisition of knowledge and skills through theoretical understanding and its practical implications. The Department has already initiated the process of revising all the courses at the undergraduate and postgraduate level. In addition to lecturing as the primary mode of instruction, teaching is also interactive with due emphasis on seminar, presentations and discussions and also experiential exercises and peer mentoring.

The Departmental teaching, research and field training are centered around contemporary issues        as stress and health, ageing, drug abuse, community mental health, disability, neuropsychological assessment and rehabilitation, etc. A large number of our Master’s and Ph.D students after completing their degrees are employed by different organizations/hospitals dealing with these issues.

From time to time, the Department organizes Conferences, Seminars, Refresher Course, Workshops, etc. for the benefit of faculty and students. It has hosted the Indian Science Congress Sessions thrice as well as an International Conference and various National Level Conferences. The Department has organized conferences on Cognitive Psychology, Quality of Life, Human Resource Development. Culture and Psychology, Health Psychology, Affect, Identity and Discourse, Puzzles of Perception and on Indian Psychology. In addition, many research projects have also been undertaken. The department has signed a MOU with San Diego State University which involves collaboration in  teaching and research.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is phd study important.

Enrolling in a PhD program helps you begin or continue research in the field you're passionate about. You can delve deeper, make new discoveries, improve conceptual tactics and apply those concepts through the research conducted. You can decide what to work on, how to work, and chart your journey with support and guidance from a supervisory team.

Why should I pursue a PhD from Shoolini University?

Shoolini University is India’s No.1 Research University (QS World University Rankings, Asia-2023) with 150+ programs and top placements & internships in India. Over the past decade, Shoolini has built a worldwide network of partner universities to foster exchange opportunities, collaborative academic programs, faculty engagement and research, and other activities. It has 104+ state-of-the-art laboratories, 9 Centres of Excellence, and 2 Shoolini Researchers are among the Top 1% Scientists of the world.

Can I do a PhD without a Master's degree?

Students with a minimum CGPA score of 7.5/10 in the four-year-undergraduate program (FYUP) will now be eligible for PhD admissions, without having to complete a master’s program, according to the new regulations on the award of PhD degree finalised by the University Grants Commission (UGC).

Do rankings matter for a PhD?

The institution's accreditation by appropriate agencies means the program meets high standards of academic excellence. However, other factors, such as the field of research, number of publications, collaborations, etc., are also considered.

Will a PhD enhance my career prospects?

Doctoral programs require intensive training in research methods. This includes interviews, surveys, questionnaires, clinical trials, and laboratory experiments. These skills are put into practice when the candidate conducts fieldwork for the dissertation. Skills gained in qualitative and quantitative research methodology and statistical analysis are transferable to non-academic research environments, particularly for industrial research. In addition, employers outside of academia seek individuals with sound research skills to carry out projects at think tanks and research institutes in both the private and government sectors.

All About PhD Psychology Entrances

Ph.D.

A Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) is the highest and most common academic degree. A Ph.D. degree normally takes between three and four years of full-time work to complete. To get it, you go through a tough program where you learn and do research. People get PhDs in lots of different subjects. Because a Ph.D. is all about research, people who want to get a Ph.D. have to do their own special research that helps them learn new things. They usually write a big paper called a dissertation to show what they discovered.

The Ph.D. exam also called the Doctor of Philosophy exam, is a really important step on the path to getting a Ph.D. degree. It’s like a big turning point in the Ph.D. program. Usually, it takes place after students have finished their required classes and sometimes done some early research. The main goal of this exam is to see how much a student knows, how well they understand their subject, and if they’re ready to do their own research in their chosen field.

An important aspect of the Ph.D. exam is its broad scope. This examination covers a lot of topics in the candidate’s field. Think of it as a comprehensive assessment, similar to a substantial test, aimed at determining whether the candidate possesses a deep understanding of the subject and has acquired the essential knowledge required to conduct independent research and have a significant impact within their field of expertise.

Basically, it’s a test to see how well they’ve mastered their academic subjects. Ph.D. exams usually include writing and speaking parts. For the writing part, they might have to write essays, make research plans, or answer questions from the committee. The oral component frequently involves defending the written work, discussing research plans, or fielding questions from a committee of faculty members who specialize in the candidate’s area of study.

Eligibility Criteria for PhD Psychology Entrance

The requirements for admission to a Ph.D. program can vary significantly depending on the university, country, and field of study. However, here are some common eligibility criteria that are often require for admission to Ph.D. programs.

  • Candidates must have obtained 55% marks or Equivalent grades in the Master’s or M.Phil Degree in Psychology. This is applicable for all Ph.D. programs except in Engineering and Technology.
  • Students in the general category are required to have a minimum of 55% marks in their master’s degree.
  • In some cases, you may be required to attend an interview as part of the admission process. This interview may be in person or conducted online.
  • Usually, the preferences are given to candidates, who are holding experience in the field of research.

Types of Entrance Exams for PhD Psychology

There are two types of exams that allow candidates to get admission to Ph.D. after clearing these:

  • UGC NET/JRF
  • GRADUATE APTITUDE TEST IN ENGINEERING (GATE)

UGC NET /JRF

The UGC NET/JRF is a countrywide test that checks if Indian citizens are eligible to become Assistant Professors or obtain an Assistant Professor + Junior Research Fellowship at colleges and institutions in India. The University Grant Commission (UGC) has assigned the task of conducting the UGC-NET exam to the National Testing Agency (NTA). The UGC-NET exam occurs twice annually, usually in June and December. It includes two of two sections. The first part evaluates teaching and research abilities through a general paper. The second part focuses on the specific subject you are applying for, like Psychology. In total, candidates have to answer 150 Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQs) within a three-hour time frame. The National Testing Agency (NTA) administers this exam using the Computer-Based Test (CBT) layout.

There is no maximum age limit for candidates applying for the UGC-NET exam to qualify for the Assistant Professor position. To qualify for the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) in the general category, candidates must be under 30 years. It’s worth noting that candidates from OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PwD category, the third gender, and women candidates can avail a significant relaxation of up to 5 years in the maximum age limit.

Role of National Testing Agency in the UGC NET Exam

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has given the responsibility to the National Testing Agency (NTA) to conduct a test called UGC-NET . This test verifies if Indian candidates can become “Assistant Professors” or get a “Junior Research Fellowship and Assistant Professor” job in Indian universities and colleges. The mode of UGC-NET is Computer-Based Test (CBT) Mode.

The performance of the candidates in both Paper I and Paper II of the UGC-NET Exam determines that the candidate will receive a Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and/or be qualified for an Assistant Professor job. If anyone only qualifies for the Assistant Professor post, they can’t get the JRF. Candidates, who meet the requirements for Assistant Professor jobs must follow the hiring rules of the universities.

General Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE)

GATE is a nationwide examination came into existence to evaluate a broad knowledge of engineering, technology, science, and humanities. Its primary target is to ascertain eligibility for admission to post-graduate level programs in participating institutions. Successfully passing the GATE exam is beneficial for attaining entry to master’s and direct doctoral programs in engineering, technology, humanities, and architecture. Each year, a different participating institution is tasked with conducting the GATE exam on behalf of the National Coordination Board (NCB)-GATE, which operates under the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education (MoE), Government of India. They conduct the GATE exam annually in February using a computer-based test (CBT) format, and the score remains valid for three (3) years from the date of the result announcement.

The participating institutions for GATE include the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, and seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT Bombay, IIT Guwahati, IIT Delhi, IIT Kanpur, IIT Madras, IIT Kharagpur, and IIT Roorkee). In 2024, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, will be responsible for organizing GATE.

7 Biggest Myths About Getting A PhD - Debunked!

On this page, 7 phd myths to demystify - why you should pursue one, 1. you have to be an academic genius to get a phd, 2. you are confined to a laboratory to work on your thesis, 3. you need to have a prior degree or masters in the phd field, 4. you will be taking orders from your supervisor, 5. a phd locks you in a career in academia, 6. a phd is a lonely journey of research, 7. your research has to lead to a world-changing breakthrough, embark on your phd journey with idp today, topics covered.

The first thing that often comes to mind for most people when they think about getting a PhD is how it’s only for highly intelligent students with the best grades and that it only promises a career in academia.

What if we told you that those claims are entirely false?

Nowadays, more students are turning to this route to pursue specialised fields of research. All you need is grit, commitment, and the willingness to succeed to thrive.

But with all the misconceptions floating around, many students still feel unsure about exploring this path.

Let’s uncover some of the biggest myths about PhDs and how this can be one of the greatest achievements that can take your career to the next level.

This is easily one of the most common misconceptions about PhDs, and often the most misleading one of all. Reality check: you don’t have to be the cream of the crop to pursue one.

Most of what’s being done during a doctoral research degree is conducting comprehensive and original research on a particular subject before publishing a dissertation.

Nowhere does it state that you need to have exceptional grades to apply.

All it takes is hard work and dedication for anyone to pursue a PhD, regardless of the field.

Pursuing PhD research is known to be demanding in nature. But that doesn’t mean you’ll be stuck working night and day in a laboratory the entire time.

In today’s age, most schools encourage their students to strike a balance between spending time in the labs working on their thesis and making time for their personal life.

By getting the rest you need and allowing yourself to take a break, it ensures the quality of your work is not compromised and you don’t end up experiencing burnout.

Since it’s the highest level of academic qualification there is, one might think that they’d have to go through all the educational stages to qualify for a PhD programme.

But contrary to popular belief, a master’s degree isn’t always necessary to earn a PhD.

Several schools across the globe like in the United States and Canada allow students to enrol in their PhD-level programmes right after their Bachelor’s as long as they meet the admission criteria and the necessary requirements.

If you want to fast-track your academic journey, this is an option worth considering.

The whole purpose of pursuing a PhD is to eventually become an independent researcher.

With that in mind and everything else you’ve achieved academically thus far, do you think your supervisor would be spoon-feeding information and micromanaging you at this level?

Remember, this isn’t an internship. Your supervisors will always be there when you need feedback or advice.

But this is an opportunity to take ownership of your work and create your own path.

Indeed, those who want to enter the field of academic teaching and research are required to have a PhD.

But this qualification is becoming increasingly versatile and can grant you jobs that are not only restricted to academia.

For instance, a few examples of non-academic industries one can enter with a doctorate include arts and humanities, chemical sciences, biological and medical sciences, engineering, and many more.

False narratives and common misconceptions have painted the life of a PhD student to be boring, lonely, and unfulfilling when it is nothing like that in reality.

Just like any study programme, there are bound to be periods of stagnancy, fatigue, and perhaps even frustration from the different challenges along the way.

But overall, there’s nothing more rewarding than knowing you made an original contribution in your field of study with your efforts and dedication.

On top of that, you’ll have your fellow students and supervisor celebrate small wins and big milestones together, making the long journey worthwhile.

You’ll be surprised to know that not all research studies result in groundbreaking scientific discoveries that make headlines.

In most cases, it’s more than enough for your thesis to offer a small advancement or alteration to a concept that’s been previously established.

As long as it’s original and thorough, it remains a fruitful contribution.

With that, it doesn’t matter how big or small your discovery may seem. As long it’s one step forward for science (or whatever your field of study may be).

Whether it’s deciding if a PhD is worth it or how to start the application process, our IDP counsellors are here to guide students at every step of their educational journey.
