A belief system is a way a group or an individual regards religious or philosophical principles. The beliefs that have formed major religions or a mainstay of a civilization may be similar or different, but each belief system has influenced the lives of its followers as well as the history, culture, politics, or economy of a specific nation or country.

The bottom line

While students often have difficulties writing thematic essays, these are not the most complicated tasks to complete within a certain course or subject. They just require making a detailed examination of the topic using relevant facts, examples or other evidence that you should be able to find in order to make your arguments more solid, and to show that you have gained a thorough understanding of the topic. However, you mustn’t just summarize the well-known facts or what you have learned from a course or book. In a thematic essay, you are supposed to identify and explain or compare issues, causes, patterns, outcomes, and connections between facts or events as well as their consequences or influences.

Expanded discussion on theme, themes: a new definition.

A successful theme essay begins with thinking through the core concept. The noted literary critic Michael Myers defines a theme as “the abstract concept that is made concrete” via the action, characterization, or description and other formal elements of literature.  Therefore, consider how the idea works: what are its parts, is there a sequence to its action, what are its causes (immediate/direct as well as distant/hidden), what types or kinds fit this concept, or what does it cause? Be alert to the limits of the idea so you can approach it by contrast as well.  Don’t forget that major truths are paradoxical, meaning that they can contain their opposite too.

Some things to avoid: (1) leaving the theme general, (2) using a saying or life platitude as your theme—distinguish “theme” from a “moral,” (3) organizing by source rather than by an aspect of the theme (like plot summary)—instead, use topic sentences to extend your thesis interpretation and use at least two texts to support that idea, and (4) merely showing that a text is exemplifies your idea rather than showing how  texts refine the idea or an aspect of it.

Some Notes on Themes

  • It is an idea that transcends any individual work of literature: it should be present among many works. Themes are the truth about ourselves and works of literature are windows into that truth.
  • If this sounds grandiose, it is. Sorry :-) Put simply, you could also say a Theme is an aspect of human culture the person analyzing literature sees as a common thread among works of literature meant to describe human culture.
  • “Going home”
  • Consider “Love”
  • The love I have for my daughter is very different from the love I have for video games
  • The effects of love when it is returned are very different from when love is not returned
  • The same is true for any of the other example themes I have listed
  • Which is it? What about them?
  • Why did they devote a chapter to an apparel store?
  • Adults lie to themselves in order to make them feel better about their past.
  • Note my example is a complete sentence
  • It’s also a complete, specific idea: it looks at the action specifically (it’s not lying to just anyone) and the motivation for it.
  • Works of literature may disagree on elements of the theme: that’s ok! That’s like two different academic journal sources disagreeing on whether torture is an effective form of national security. Your sources may disagree: your job is to use both (or, in our case, all three) and determine which is more right.
  • Theme essay structure
  • This is the part you’ve engaged before
  • That’s not comparison
  • Rather, write about all the works you plan to examine in the paper in each body paragraph
  • Each paragraph is organized around a sub-theme (see below)
  • Topic sentence explains the sub-theme
  • Explain how one work of literature shows that sub-theme
  • Transition sentence to another work of literature
  • Explain how another work of literature shows that sub-theme
  • Transition sentence to the last work of literature
  • Explain how the last work of literature shows that sub-theme
  • It gives me the take-away for comparing all three
  • Each work of literature gets full source integration and explanation as usual
  • Each body paragraph is its own sub-theme
  • Expect long paragraphs! That’s ok
  • These are aspects of the main theme that build that theme up to what it is
  • Adults lie to themselves
  • To make them feel better
  • About their past
  • This is just a simple break down of the specifics of the sentence; that’s how it should be.
  • What is it to lie to oneself? How do we do it? What does it look like?
  • Do we do this realizing we are lying to ourselves? Or do we not realize? Why or why not?
  • The first set of questions could be answered in a body paragraph
  • The second set of questions could also be a body paragraph.
  • Why do we want to avoid the pain of our memories?
  • Do the lies actually comfort us or do they not really take effect? Does the pain we are trying to avoid linger in any way?
  • Why do we seek to avoid our pasts?
  • Do we lie about our futures? Do we lie about our presents?
  • There are more possible questions, but I’m going to cut for time.
  • Answer sets of questions in body paragraphs to progress and fully explain your idea.
  • Topic sentences don’t need to predict the works of literature though. Do that in the introduction instead.
  • The last sentence of the sub-theme’s paragraph should process the different works of literature and help the reader come to a conclusion based on their agreement / disagreement.

How to Structure College Essays That Succeed

Prompt's Foolproof Guide to Outlining Personal Essays

When it comes to most personal essays — including for the Common App and Coalition App — there are two basic structures that work wonders:

  • The Journey — for essays that show a clear progression of personal growth (ie: There was a Before You, now there's an After You).
  • The Theme — for essays that show either (a) how you developed one important trait over many distinct experiences, or (b) one meaningful passion over time.

You'll know which structure to choose after you've brainstormed the best essay topic to show off your strengths. We walk you through how to do that in our posts on brainstorming and on the traits colleges look for in essays .

Let's start with the structure most students should write — since most students will focus their essays on a particular experience and how it changed them. That's the Journey structure.

The Journey Structure

The key to the Journey Structure is a focus on the new person you became after a particular experience. You're telling a story of personal growth with a focus on where that growth has led you. (It's surprisingly common for people to leave the critical post-experience part out.)

Note: A time of personal growth can cover days, weeks, months or years. Just make sure the most important parts occurred within your high school years . Childhood or middle school experiences aren't going to land well with admissions folks.

The Journey Essay Has Four Components

1. Intro: Choose an active moment from the middle of your story to create a brief, vivid opening scene that grabs an overworked admission reader's attention. At the end of the intro, you might give a brief guiding sentence to help show where the essay is going. For example, "If you'd asked me a year ago, I never would have guessed I'd be ____"

2. Before: The aim here is to draw a contrast before the Old You and the New You, post-experience. Briefly describe who you were before you experienced personal growth.

Length note: The Intro + Before sections should take up about one third of the essay (at most) . The most important parts are still to come.

3. During: This is often the easiest and most fun section to write: Describe what happened and the actions you took during your time of personal growth. Illustrate the process of overcoming an obstacle, learning and growing.

Length note: Most personal essays make the mistake of focusing on the During section, letting it eat up about 90 percent of the space. But it should only take about one third of the essay . The most important part of this essay — the part that'll get the admissions team reaching for their "We need them on our campus!" stamp — is yet to come.

4. After (aka The New You): We got there! To the part that matters most. It's a spotlight on the wiser, kinder New You who has learned from experience, and become a more dynamic, thoughtful, interested, interesting, savvier, or — who knows? — maybe funnier person. A different person, anyway, and one likely to contribute enormously on campus and in their career to follow.

Consider these questions to help you get to the crux of your growth:

  • What did the experience teach you about yourself? What values did you develop or strengthen as a result of it?
  • What impact has the experience had on other parts of your life? (Your academic life; your friendships; your family relationships; your place in the community.)
  • What new actions did you take as a result of this growth? How do you behave differently? This is often the most important part of the essay as it proves to your reader that you are a changed and better person.

Length note: The After section should take up — you guessed it — about one third of the essay.

5. Conclusion: Don't stress on this. Find a quick way to sum up or underscore the most important points you made. If you have a clear sense of your future goals, you could add a sentence or two about how your experiences will help you in the future (optional).

Length note: No more than three to four sentences here.

The Theme Structure

In a Theme essay, you'll focus on one big theme — either a positive trait or a meaningful passion — by describing a number of distinct experiences over which you developed or showcased that trait or passion.

The Theme essay has 3 components:

1. Intro: Create a brief opening scene as in the "Journey" structure, and allude to your main theme directly or indirectly. A good strategy is to mention your theme as the last sentence of your introduction, guiding your reader to understand what is to come in the essay.

2. Middle: Develop a number of experiences or examples here. Devote one paragraph to each experience. The focus of each paragraph should be on New You — your new, improved values and the new, improved ways you go about the world.

Length note: Begin each paragraph with a short two to four sentences describing the situation, and the actions you took. Then, take the rest of the paragraph to reflect on how you grew or improved as a result.

Make sure each paragraph clearly relates to at least one of the five traits colleges look for in their essays. Using concrete, specific examples of actions New You takes now , show how the experience has made you into the type of student who will succeed in college and beyond.

3. End: Wrap up by explaining why the theme is meaningful to you and (optionally) provide a look to your future ambitions.

Length note: No more than three to five sentences here.

How to write a theme statement

When you get done with a reading assignment for school, usually an essay, novel, or short story, you'll sometimes be asked to write a theme statement.

The definition of a theme statement can vary, but essentially it's asking you to state what the piece of writing was about — not the plot, but what sort of insight or perspective does it give on life/the world/human nature?

Theme is also sometimes known as the "main idea" of a story.

But how do you find the theme of a story? And how do you write a theme statement?

To write a theme statement, follow these 3 steps:

  • Pick the main topic addressed in the story
  • Pinpoint the author's view on the topic
  • Format that perspective using a theme statement template

Let's dive a little deeper:

Finding the theme of a story using topics

After you're finished reading the book, story, or essay (you did read it, right?!), think back on the main character or characters.

Did they undergo some kind of change throughout the journey? Did their outlook on life evolve in some way?

That's usually a pretty good place to start looking for the theme.

For example, maybe the story deals with the broad topic of "love." Well "love" by itself isn't a theme, but a specific perspective on love could be.

Try this exercise once you've found your topic. Fill in the blank:

"This author believes _____ about (topic)."

In our example about love, maybe the story's about how love conquers all. Or maybe it's about how love is fleeting and fickle.

Your theme at this point might look something like this:

"The author believes that true love doesn't really exist."

(A little dark, but hey, it's just an example!)

Using a theme statement template

Every teacher or instructor is going to have their own way of wanting you to present your theme statement, so be sure to get clarity on that directly from them.

That said, there are some agreed upon "rules" of writing theme statements.

  • Don't include specific characters or plot points. This perspective on life should apply to people and situations outside the story.
  • Don't be obvious. "War is bad," is not a theme. Dig a little deeper using details from the story. (What specifically is bad about war? How does it negatively impact the characters or the world of the story?)
  • Don't make it advicey. "You should always be there for your family," isn't a theme, it's a suggestion. Keep your theme statement objective and based solely on evidence from the story ("The bond between family can overcome any obstacle.")
  • Don't use cliches. "Once a cheater, always a cheater," or "Actions speak louder than words," aren't themes. They're just expressions people use all the time and have very little power or real insight.

Here is a general template you can use based on what we learned above:

"The central theme of (piece of writing) is (author's position on topic) ."

Alternatively, you could try: "In (piece of writing), (author) presents the idea that (position on topic)."

You may also be asked to use supporting details from the story to back up your theme statement. In that case, your full theme statement might look something like this:

"The central theme of (piece of writing) is (author's position on topic). When (event from the story) happens, it results in (blank), which demonstrates (some element of the theme)."

You're going to have to tweak and adjust this based on how much detail the assignment calls for and which examples from the text you choose to use, but it should be a good starting point!

OK, so what does it look like in action?

Here are some example theme statements from stories you're probably already familiar with (I'm doing these mostly to demonstrate how to use the template. I hope you'll put a lot of thought into your own theme statements and play around with different ideas before committing to one) :

In 'The Dark Knight Rises', Christopher Nolan presents the idea that true heroism requires complete and utter selflessness.

The central theme of 'Finding Nemo' is that fear is sometimes more dangerous than danger itself.

In 'Romeo and Juliet', Shakespeare presents the idea that love is more powerful than hate.

What this handout is about.

This handout will help you figure out what your college instructors expect when they give you a writing assignment. It will tell you how and why to move beyond the five-paragraph essays you learned to write in high school and start writing essays that are more analytical and more flexible.

What is a five-paragraph essay?

High school students are often taught to write essays using some variation of the five-paragraph model. A five-paragraph essay is hourglass-shaped: it begins with something general, narrows down in the middle to discuss specifics, and then branches out to more general comments at the end. In a classic five-paragraph essay, the first paragraph starts with a general statement and ends with a thesis statement containing three “points”; each body paragraph discusses one of those “points” in turn; and the final paragraph sums up what the student has written.

Why do high schools teach the five-paragraph model?

The five-paragraph model is a good way to learn how to write an academic essay. It’s a simplified version of academic writing that requires you to state an idea and support it with evidence. Setting a limit of five paragraphs narrows your options and forces you to master the basics of organization. Furthermore—and for many high school teachers, this is the crucial issue—many mandatory end-of-grade writing tests and college admissions exams like the SAT II writing test reward writers who follow the five-paragraph essay format.

Writing a five-paragraph essay is like riding a bicycle with training wheels; it’s a device that helps you learn. That doesn’t mean you should use it forever. Once you can write well without it, you can cast it off and never look back.

Why don’t five-paragraph essays work well for college writing?

The way college instructors teach is probably different from what you experienced in high school, and so is what they expect from you.

While high school courses tend to focus on the who, what, when, and where of the things you study—”just the facts”—college courses ask you to think about the how and the why. You can do very well in high school by studying hard and memorizing a lot of facts. Although college instructors still expect you to know the facts, they really care about how you analyze and interpret those facts and why you think those facts matter. Once you know what college instructors are looking for, you can see some of the reasons why five-paragraph essays don’t work so well for college writing:

  • Five-paragraph essays often do a poor job of setting up a framework, or context, that helps the reader understand what the author is trying to say. Students learn in high school that their introduction should begin with something general. College instructors call these “dawn of time” introductions. For example, a student asked to discuss the causes of the Hundred Years War might begin, “Since the dawn of time, humankind has been plagued by war.” In a college course, the student would fare better with a more concrete sentence directly related to what he or she is going to say in the rest of the paper—for example, a sentence such as “In the early 14th century, a civil war broke out in Flanders that would soon threaten Western Europe’s balance of power.” If you are accustomed to writing vague opening lines and need them to get started, go ahead and write them, but delete them before you turn in the final draft.   • Five-paragraph essays often lack an argument. Because college courses focus on analyzing and interpreting rather than on memorizing, college instructors expect writers not only to know the facts but also to make an argument about the facts. The best five-paragraph essays may do this. However, the typical five-paragraph essay has a “listing” thesis, for example, “I will show how the Romans lost their empire in Britain and Gaul by examining military technology, religion, and politics,” rather than an argumentative one, for example, “The Romans lost their empire in Britain and Gaul because their opponents’ military technology caught up with their own at the same time as religious upheaval and political conflict were weakening the sense of common purpose on the home front.” For more on this subject, see our handout on argument .
  • Five-paragraph essays are often repetitive. Writers who follow the five-paragraph model tend to repeat sentences or phrases from the introduction in topic sentences for paragraphs, rather than writing topic sentences that tie their three “points” together into a coherent argument. Repetitive writing doesn’t help to move an argument along, and it’s no fun to read.
  • Five-paragraph essays often lack “flow.” Five-paragraph essays often don’t make smooth transitions from one thought to the next. The “listing” thesis statement encourages writers to treat each paragraph and its main idea as a separate entity, rather than to draw connections between paragraphs and ideas in order to develop an argument.
  • Five-paragraph essays often have weak conclusions that merely summarize what’s gone before and don’t say anything new or interesting. In our handout on conclusions , we call these “that’s my story and I’m sticking to it” conclusions: they do nothing to engage readers and make them glad they read the essay. Most of us can remember an introduction and three body paragraphs without a repetitive summary at the end to help us out.
  • Five-paragraph essays don’t have any counterpart in the real world. Read your favorite newspaper or magazine; look through the readings your professors assign you; listen to political speeches or sermons. Can you find anything that looks or sounds like a five-paragraph essay? One of the important skills that college can teach you, above and beyond the subject matter of any particular course, is how to communicate persuasively in any situation that comes your way. The five-paragraph essay is too rigid and simplified to fit most real-world situations.
  • Perhaps most important of all: in a five-paragraph essay, form controls content, when it should be the other way around. Students begin with a plan for organization, and they force their ideas to fit it. Along the way, their perfectly good ideas get mangled or lost.

How do I break out of writing five-paragraph essays?

Let’s take an example based on our handout on thesis statements . Suppose you’re taking a course on contemporary communication, and the professor asks you to write a paper on this topic:

Discuss the impact of social media on public awareness.

Thanks to your familiarity with the five paragraph essay structure and with the themes of your course, you are able to quickly write an introductory paragraph:

Social media allows the sharing of information through online networks among social connections. Everyone uses social media in our modern world for a variety of purposes: to learn about the news, keep up with friends, and even network for jobs. Social media cannot help but affect public awareness. In this essay, I will discuss the impact of social media on public awareness of political campaigns, public health initiatives, and current events.

Now you have something on paper. But you realize that this introduction sticks too close to the five-paragraph essay structure. The introduction starts too broadly by taking a step back and defining social media in general terms. Then it moves on to restate the prompt without quite addressing it: while it’s reasserted that there is an impact, the impact is not actually discussed. And the final sentence, instead of presenting an argument, only lists topics in sequence. You are prepared to write a paragraph on political campaigns, a paragraph on public health initiatives, and a paragraph on current events, but you aren’t sure what your point will be.

So you start again. Instead of trying to come up with something to say about each of three points, you brainstorm until you come up with a main argument, or thesis, about the impact of social media on public awareness. You think about how easy it is to share information on social media, as well as about how difficult it can be to discern more from less reliable information. As you brainstorm the effects of social media on public awareness in connection to political campaigns specifically, you realize you have enough to say about this topic without discussing two additional topics. You draft your thesis statement:

Because not every voice on social media is reliable, people have become much more critical consumers of information, and thus, more informed voters.

Next you think about your argument’s parts and how they fit together. You read the Writing Center’s handout on organization . You decide that you’ll begin by addressing the counterargument that misinformation on social media has led to a less informed public. Addressing the counterargument point-by-point helps you articulate your evidence. You find it ends up taking more than one paragraph to discuss the strategies people use to compare and evaluate information as well as the evidence that people end up more informed as a result.

You notice that you now have four body paragraphs. You might have had three or two or seven; what’s important is that you allowed your argument to determine how many paragraphs would be needed and how they should fit together. Furthermore, your body paragraphs don’t each discuss separate topics, like “political campaigns” and “public health.” Instead they support different points in your argument. This is also a good moment to return to your introduction and revise it to focus more narrowly on introducing the argument presented in the body paragraphs in your paper.

Finally, after sketching your outline and writing your paper, you turn to writing a conclusion. From the Writing Center handout on conclusions , you learn that a “that’s my story and I’m sticking to it” conclusion doesn’t move your ideas forward. Applying the strategies you find in the handout, you may decide that you can use your conclusion to explain why the paper you’ve just written really matters.

Is it ever OK to write a five-paragraph essay?

Yes. Have you ever found yourself in a situation where somebody expects you to make sense of a large body of information on the spot and write a well-organized, persuasive essay—in fifty minutes or less? Sounds like an essay exam situation, right? When time is short and the pressure is on, falling back on the good old five-paragraph essay can save you time and give you confidence. A five-paragraph essay might also work as the framework for a short speech. Try not to fall into the trap, however, of creating a “listing” thesis statement when your instructor expects an argument; when planning your body paragraphs, think about three components of an argument, rather than three “points” to discuss. On the other hand, most professors recognize the constraints of writing blue-book essays, and a “listing” thesis is probably better than no thesis at all.
