Victoria Gotti Reveals Why She Tried to Keep 'Painful' Death of Daughter Out of Lifetime Biopic
Victoria Gotti: My Father's Daughter premieres on Lifetime on Saturday
Dave Quinn is a Senior Editor for PEOPLE. He has been working at the brand since 2016, and is the author of the No. 1 New York Times best-selling book, Not All Diamonds and Rosé: The Inside Story of the Real Housewives from the People Who Lived It.
Victoria Gotti 's life will be immortalized in a new Lifetime biopic set to premiere Saturday that explores her complicated relationship with her father, late mob boss John Gotti. But while the 56-year-old wrote and produced Victoria Gotti: My Father's Daughter and has a role in the movie, there's one scene even she couldn't keep out of her story.
In a candid conversation about the special with PEOPLE, Gotti reveals that she fought hard with Lifetime executives to avoid including the death of her first child, daughter Justine . The latter was tragically stillborn nine months after Gotti's 1984 wedding to now ex-husband Carmine Agnello.
"I didn't want [that scene] in there," Gotti confessed. "That was very painful to me. And it's not about having to explain it or not wanting to explain it — I just felt like it's mine, not yours. You didn't know her."
Gotti originally didn't include the moment in the script, but "somebody caught it" during the movie's seven-year development process. In the end, though, Gotti is happy with how the moment is portrayed.
"They do it tastefully in the movie," said Gotti, who would go on to have three other children: Carmine Jr., 32, John, 31, and Frankie, 28. "You see birth No. 1 which is bad, and then birth No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 — it's done that way so it's like, 'Oh she has a family now.' So it's not so bad. But that's something I really wanted left out."

While that moment made it into Victoria Gotti: My Father's Daughter , Gotti was surprised by the decision to cut a scene about the death of her best friend Roseanne, who was killed in a car accident.
During that time, Gotti and Roseanne were prohibited from seeing their boyfriends by their fathers and brothers, respectively. The young ladies would sneak out, going to the "outskirts of town to have dinner so no one would see," Gotti said. But one night, they were caught by Roseanne's brother, who took her away in his car.
Minutes later, Gotti heard sirens. Following them, she found the car wreck. Roseanne's brother had been drinking, Gotti remembered and he hit a median in the road. Roseanne's body had flown through the windshield and landed in a tree. Her dismembered leg was on the street.
"I knew from the shoe," Gotti said, getting emotional. "I remember looking at the shoe in the street on her leg, knowing it was her. And it just destroyed me."
"That was an important scene to me because I felt it was meant to change fate completely," Gotti reflected. "Here we were, two kids, not caring about consequences. … And then to have one of my closest friends killed right in front of me? I'd never been up close and personal with death. I was in such a state of shock. I didn't even know how to tell my mother and father. I couldn't say I was in the car with who I wasn't supposed to be with. That whole scene was very pivotal to my life."
Overall, she's happy with the resulting film, especially actress Chelsea Frei's portrayal of Gotti. "She did a good job," Gotti said. "She did consult with me before she did the role, but that had no bearing on what I think of her performance."
While Gotti admits the process of writing the film was difficult. "There were a few really bad parts of my life that I had to get away from the script for hours, sometimes days, because I had to relive them all over again because it was painful." She thinks the opportunity to show fans a different side of her was worth it.
"There are so many misconceptions of me," Gotti said, "and this movie, it really clears those up."
The biggest one? "That I was raised rich, that I'm a princess — I love that one," joked Gotti. "We grew up very, very poor. We were very young. We were in downtown Brooklyn. We had nothing, but we didn't care. We were loved, my siblings and I. We were a very close-knit family."
Victoria Gotti: My Father's Daughter premieres Saturday (8 p.m. ET) on Lifetime.

Synopsis (via Lifetime) Executive produced by Victoria Gotti herself, the movie takes us deep into the world of what it was really like to grow up as the daughter of mob boss John Gotti, revealing the glamour, glitz and unique hardships of her world. Sharing never-before-revealed stories about her life, Victoria (Chelsea Frei) tells of a sensitive child growing up with a beloved father (Maurice Benard) she worried about constantly; the tragedy of her younger brother’s death; and her turbulent romance, forbidden by her father, with the man who later became her husband. Victoria had a front-row seat to a life the world became fascinated with, all while trying to reconcile the loving father she adored with a man the outside world was determined to bring down.
Victoria Gotti is entering a club and a rude reporter is like “You’re dad is NOT doing well.” She then goes home to her three boys and husband and gets a call in the middle of the night it is her dad (John Gotti played by Maurice Bernard from General Hospital.) from jail. He breaks the news to her that he has cancer. The next morning the the FBI are on her lawn.
Cut to the REAL LIFE VICTORIA GOTTI (Who is also doing the voice over throughout the whole film, which is a choice that I was unsure of, but it works out well.) she says “I’m Victoria and this is the story of my father and me”
Flash to 1962. Victoria’s mom, Butch Gotti, is in labor. John Gotti steals his daugher from the hospital because he can’t pay the hospital bills. Victoria (the real person) says she was royal screwed from the beginning.
1969, Victoria and her siblings visit John Gotti in jail. Victoria is a shy kid and her dad promises to make things up to her once he is out of the pen. At school, Victoria is having problems with anxiety. She has to do an oral report about her dad and one of the kids calls her dad a jail bird. (Victoria thinks he work in construction and is confused at to why everyone keeps calling her dad that.) The family is on food stamps and not doing well.
John Gotti is out of jail and beating small children in the neighborhood while still neglecting his family. He is back working for the mob and is never home except to eat and sleep. Butch has had it with John and kicks him out of the house. She tells him she is not putting up with his shit. (Lifetime cursing?!) She throws a meat poker at him and it sticks him in the shoulder. Victoria is so stressed from all the fighting that she starts to get really sick. The doctors recommend a phycologist and John Gotti is like, hell no. (He does promise to get his family out if the shit hole house they are in.)
1974 they move up to middle america in the suburbs. Things don’t really get better, John Gotti is hiding in a motel in New Jersey and the family have to make the trek out there to see him. He promises that he will be back home soon. Victoria Gotti (the real woman) starts her voice over and let us know that her father got arrested because a friend rated him out. He was imprisoned for four years for manslaughter and Victoria now understands who her dad really is. (After seeing a headline in a newspaper.)
1977 and Victoria is all grown up and the family welcomes John Gotti home with Lasagna. (They are Italian, remember?) Victoria is annoyed that she is John Gotti’s daughter, she can’t date guys (they are afraid of her father.) or even go do simple things, her driving school instructor gives her preferable treatment because he is afraid of her dad. (She is a terrible driver, which is funny.) Victoria meets a cutie named Carmine. He tells her that he knows who her father is and doesn’t care. They start dating. (It doesn’t go well because John Gotti shows up and tells Carmine not to mess with his daughter.) Victoria tells her dad that Carmine reminds her of him. John Gotti is not having her date a street punk and her promises to keep them apart.
John Gotti takes Victoria to her first club and it is pretty GROOVY, okay!?!? Andy Warhol is there, a disco ball, and so are all of John’s mob friends. They drink and talk about Victoria’s dreams. She wants to be a writer and have some kids, but he tells her to get cultured and travel the world. He tells her to find a gentleman and NOT Carmine.
1979, Victoria still can’t quit Carmine. He proposes to her in his car outside. (Like a true gentleman.) The police show up interrupting the moment and find a gun is Carmine’s car. The police take him into station. Victoria starts to see that Carmine is a little rough around the edges, but she is still into him.
Carmine gets the crap beat out of him and finds himself in the hospital, the only medicine that will cure him is Victoria’s love. She is thankful that her dad had nothing to do with the attack, but she still fights with her dad about it, because … you know.. DRAMA!
Frankie, Victoria’s little brother died in a car accident. Butch Gotti is wrecked by this news. (Rhonda Dent does a good job with this scene.) Victoria Gotti voice over tells us that her brother was hit by their neighbors car while on a bike and that her mom tried to commit suicide three times. At this point, Victoria took over raising her siblings and household duties.
Carmine shows up at the funeral and pays his respect to John Gotti, who accepts. The neighbor has no remorse and doesn’t even move. Butch Gotti is really losing it and she smashes the neighbor’s car window with a baseball bat and threatens him. She also wonders around the street in the middle of the night looking for Frankie. Butch Gotti spends some time in Florida and when she returns the police question her about the missing neighbor claiming he was seen being forced into a van by his work. Butch Gotti tells them that she knows nothing about that, but he deserves whatever happened to him. John Favara (the neighbor) has never been found and is presumed dead.
Carmine is done with hiding the relationship with Victoria and goes to John Gotti for his approval for his daughter’s hand in marriage. John agrees, but he has got rules. Victoria has to finish college and he should treat her like a gentleman. Victoria doesn’t feel well and goes to the doctor. He says that she will need a hysterectomy by age 25, which puts a rush on starting a family for her and Carmine.
At her wedding, Victoria and her dad talk. He tells her that she is making the biggest mistake of her life. The wedding is the biggest wedding of the century and is so big even Charles and Diana would be jealous, according to Victoria Gotti. (We get actual footage of the wedding!!!!) At the honeymoon in Vegas, Carmine is less interested in Victoria’s lingerie and more interested in gambling all of their wedding money. ($30,000). Victoria kicks him out of the hotel room and the voice over tells us that he is manic depressive.
Victoria heads back home and tells her mom that she thinks she made a big mistake. Carmine shows up with flowers and tells her that he is sorry, but Victoria isn’t having it, instead she is having morning sickness. Victoria is pregnant and her idea of divorcing Carmine go out the window. She loses the baby and asks her dad to fix it, he tells her there is nothing he can do as she cries in the hospital bed. Cut to Victoria talking about the loss of her daughter and how hard it was for her. It is a pretty effective technique and I felt for Victoria Gotti in that moment.
With only 30 mins left in the movie, Victoria Gotti finally goes blonde. (It’s a terrible wig though. Lifetime needs to hire a better wig specialist. Need I remind you about Judith Light and Christian Ricci?) Victoria gets pregnant again and her father becomes the famous mob boss, the dapper don . Carmine’s business is also booming. Everything is going smoothly, and John wins two court cases earning the nickname the Teflon Don. Victoria keeps having baby boys and even gets her own column in the newspaper.
1990, Victoria goes to her father’s trial and it happens to be the one where he gets a guilty verdict. She now lives in a beautiful house and has a lovely family, but Carmine also gets in trouble with the law. The couple fight and she kicks him out of the house. He comes back with a shotgun and tells Victoria that he won’t let her leave him. Carmine pulls the gun on Victoria in the bathtub, “as a joke”. She visits her dad in jail and now knows what she has to do.
Back to the FBI on the front lawn. Victoria informed on husband and got him taken away by the feds. She is raising three kids on her own while maintaining her column and book deals. Victoria visits her father in jail with throat cancer and he asks her to write a book about their relationship. Her father dies and has a crazy elaborate funeral.
The real Victoria Gotti tells us that she still cries every night and misses her father. He died when he was 61 and she divorced her husband Carmine in 2004.
The actress in Victoria Gotti drag looks like Courtney Love .

‘My Father’s Daughter’: Victoria Gotti on Why She Chose Maurice Benard to Play Her Dad
There have many stories told about late mob boss John Gotti, but now, his daughter, Victoria Gotti, is telling her version of what really happened and what the dynamic with her father truly was. Gotti both executive-produced the film and co-wrote the teleplay to get the story right. And who better to play her dad than Maurice Benard, who brings to life crime lord Sonny Corinthos on General Hospital ?
Actress Chelsea Frei ( Sideswiped ) plays Victoria in the film and the story covers what it was like constantly worrying about father, the tragic loss of her younger brother, and her rocky romance with the man who later became her husband. Read on to get Gotti’s views on what she wants people to learn about her father, and the legacy of her reality series Growing Up Gotti .
Maurice Benard on Playing Gotti & a Possible Sonny-Margaux 'Affair' on 'General Hospital'
Why did you want to tell this story?
Mostly because of the stories that are out there that have been about me. This isn’t the story we’ve seen before in the movies or on the HBO movie [ Gotti ]. This is my story and about [clearing up] all the untruths. This movie has been in development for four years. We got started twice and then we stopped. I didn’t like the script – not that [previous scripts] were offensive, it just wasn’t ‘right’ enough. I didn’t think anyone would want to watch it. I said let’s wait till the right script comes along. The writer we had did not do what we all expected so I ended up writing it. Thankfully, everyone liked it, but they said – and this is the joke – ‘the only problem is you’ve written a $30 million movie. That’s never going to happen.’ So, we cut it up.
I thought it was time to tell a story about things that years ago people didn’t deal with. Nobody talked about manic depressive disorders [which Gotti’s late husband, Carmine ‘the Bull’ Angello was diagnosed as having]. Things were kept quiet. Divorces aren’t something that people always talked about. Also, my kids would go to school and [hear things about their grandfather] and I’d say, ‘Oh, it’s not true. Keep your heads up high.’ I wasn’t thinking at the time that they’re [just] kids.
(L to R) Rhonda Dent, Zoey Siewert and Maurice Benard (Lifetime)
Did you do the story or dialogue for this movie? Or both?
I did both.
What did you learn about writing dialogue?
I had no clue when I started. DramaQueen [a scriptwriting program] helped teach me. I didn’t think I’d ever write. Writing a book is writing a book. Writing a screenplay is writing a screenplay. When people ask me for writing advice, I tell them about DramaQueen. I studied that program inside and out. It formats it all for you. You have to learn. It gets tedious, but a prompt will come up and tell you if you’ve made a mistake.
Christina Ricci & Josh Bowman on the Importance of Lifetime's 'The Nellie Bly Story'
Do you want to write more movies?
I’d love to. I love to write. I love being behind the cameras and when I wrote my column at the New York Post.
What was it about Maurice Benard that made you want him to play your dad?
I grew up on him, watching him on General Hospital where he plays Sonny Corinthos. That’s a character we thought was very parallel to what we needed. Whenever anyone would ask me, ‘Who in Hollywood do you see playing your dad?’ I could honestly not come up with anyone. When one of the network heads brought up his name into the mix, I said, ‘That’s not a bad choice. That’s a good one.’ Other than [Maurice] I had no other name in my head. Then I saw him when we were on set in Vancouver. I had my executive producer hat on and we watched him do his thing for a couple of days. He was very good. I was like, ‘Wow, this is as good a match as we thought it would be.’
(L to R) Zoey Siewert and Maurice Benard (Lifetime)
How do you look at his performance and say, ‘We don’t see Sonny?’
I think it’s inevitable [that we do on some level]. I thought from the beginning that we would, but that might even help him getting into character. He’s played [Sonny] for years, consistently.
Throughout the film, you appear as yourself as a talking head, explaining certain parts of your life, expanding on scenes. It’s very effective. Why did you decide to do that?
After I wrote the first draft, I showed the script to [a magazine] editor friend of mine. He’s a gifted editor and he said, ‘This is good, but I know you’ve got more in you. I want you to write more of the voiceovers. Write three or four more into them and then send it to me.’ I took his advice and I went with it. And, now, here we are.
Marcia Gay Harden on Playing a Twisted Mom for Lifetime & Her Possible 'Law & Order: SVU' Return
Were there misconceptions about your father that you wanted to clear up?
Oh, yeah. One was that he came home for dinner and discussed the family business [in front of us]. You couldn’t even mention that in my house. My father felt if you weren’t present at Sunday dinner with the family you better have a darn good excuse. Whether you were single or partnered, you had to be there. This gave everyone a chance to let everyone know what everyone was up to. Before my father died, and he never said ‘die’ or ‘pass,’ he’d say, ‘once I go,’ he said, ‘Promise me, you’re never going to shy away from having or let go of the Sunday dinners.’ I said, ‘You think I’m worried about Sunday dinners?’ He said, ‘You don’t understand. If you [lose them] the whole family will splinter.’ So, I woke up on a Friday and said, ‘Saturday, I’m cooking all day, and I’m calling everyone and saying come over on Sunday.’ We started doing it again. We still do.
Did you ever miss a dinner?
No. I never missed one when he was alive. Nobody would unless they were very sick. And if you were, you’d come downstairs and make an appearance. If you were married and had your own children you had to be there, he’d get really upset if he didn’t see the grandkids.
Chelsea Frei (Lifetime)
How do you think your reality series, Growing Up Gotti , which aired in 2004-05, affected the reality TV landscape?
I’m not sure if we should get credit or be penalized. We did what a lot of people were afraid to do but wanted to. They weren’t daring enough. [After our show], suddenly, the floodgates opened up. Everyone was ‘Pick me, pick me [for a show].’
What would you like people to walk away with knowing about you, your dad, and your family that they might not have known before?
That as much as my father and I were alike, we also had a lot of conflict. I think about what he taught me. He taught me to be strong, to stay strong. I would use those words back at him [when I felt I needed to] and he didn’t like that very much. He’d tell me someone wasn’t good enough for me or ask why didn’t I see something a certain way, and I’d use that back at him. That was ironic. But I think he appreciated me for that.

Victoria Gotti on the Challenges She Faced With 'Victoria Gotti: My Father's Daughter'
Victoria Gotti, daughter of infamous Gambino crime-family boss John Gotti, executive produced " Victoria Gotti: My Father's Daughter" (World Premiere February 9, 2019 at 8/7c), which gives an inside look at what it was like to grow up surrounded by the mob lifestyle. She answered some questions for us about the movie and her life.
What misconception about your family were you most interested in clearing up with the movie?
The most disturbing misconception I wanted to clear up was the fact I did NOT live a "fairytale princess" life. I was born into poverty until I was 11, then moved up to middle class, eventually making it on my own. I had no dad, no husband, no man. I worked my butt off and, at times, held three jobs working 14 to 16 hour days while filming "Growing Up Gotti."
What is your favorite memory with your dad?
My favorite memory with my dad was the dinner portrayed in the movie. It was my 18th birthday and I remember feeling like Cinderella. The restaurant he took me to later became my favorite place in New York City: One if by Land, Two if By Sea, in Greenwich Village.
What's your favorite scene in the movie?
The birth scene at the hospital. Having been told I would not have children after I had [previously] delivered a stillborn daughter, Justine, I felt blessed beyond words! Watching it makes me cry.
What were the biggest challenges you faced while writing the book the movie is based on, "This Family of Mine"?
Having to go back to the most painful moments of my life; my kid brother's death, the loss of my daughter, my divorce and my dad's death. Writing these scenes forced me to confront all my demons, all the painful memories we all try so hard to keep at the back of our brains.
What's your favorite Lifetime movie—besides your own, of course?
" Cocaine Godmother: The Griselda Blanco Story " with Catherine Zeta Jones. I thought the script was so powerful. It was a story I knew little about. And her performance was outstanding!

GOTTI GOTTI GOTTI GOTTI GOTTI
Victoria Gotti: My Father's Daughter is the latest entry in the Gotti Cinematic Universe (GCU).
It is also in all ways inferior to Gotti (2018) . It doesn’t have the majestic performance by John Travolta, the masterful directing by Kevin Connolly, the stunning visuals by cinematographer Michael Barrett or the incredible soundtrack by Pitbull.
3/10, hope the next instalment John A. Gotti: My Father's Son is better.

The way this was made is much like the Elizabeth Smart movie was made, narrative with the real life person interspersed moving the story along with their interviews/ narration. It’s an interesting concept and I think it worked quite well with this film, I felt Victoria Gotti was very genuine when she was on-screen.
It is your typical Lifetime fare, don’t expect an Oscar-y type of biopic, but once again I think for this subject matter, having that Lifetime sheen works.

My mom was watching this. Typical Lifetime fluff but that's fine with me. The story of Victoria Gotti is told in the most by the numbers and basic way but sometimes that's all you need on a lazy Saturday. The actress playing Victoria is pretty so that helped. It's not the best biopic and the actor playing Gotti doesn't get the essence of the character other than playing him like every mafia guy ever. Still better than John Travolta's Gotti.

A documentary interspersed with acted scenes, this documentary, docudrama recounts the life of Mobster John Gotti’s daughter. A well made film, the film was quite interesting and was a good effort for how they managed to pull off something like this. We needed more documentaries of this style, as I always enjoy a good drama, but docdramas always seem to be a bit more compelling. Narrated by the real Victoria Gotti as t cuts to its acted scenes, the film moves along at a good pace and shows a different side to the Gotti name. I don’t see this film as being sympathetic to John Gotti or his family, but at the same time, it still manages to paint an…

Take A Trip To The '80s In 'Victoria Gotti: My Father's Daughter'
When Victoria Gotti: My Father's Daughter premieres on Lifetime on Feb. 9, it promises to deliver a staggering array of wigs and 1980s fashion, not to mention more than a few New Yawk accents. Its title is likely a tipoff, but if you're unfamiliar with the history of Mafia families in the Tri-state area, then you might be wondering if Victoria Gotti: My Father's Daughter is a true story .
It absolutely is, and you can trust in its accuracy because Victoria Gotti went straight to the source when crafting its script. It's narrated by the real Victoria Gotti , much like recent Lifetime movie I Am Elizabeth Smart was narrated by its eponymous heroine. Gotti also served as executive producer. Since she'll be giving voice to her own story, viewers are guaranteed to get her point of view on growing up the child of mob boss John Gotti.
But who is John Gotti? Per the New York Times , he was the head of the Gambino crime family in New York City in the late 1980s. Victoria was one of his five children, and now she's telling her side of the story for Lifetime. The summary for Victoria Gotti hints at her conflicting upbringing: though her father's position brought glamour and excitement to the family, it also led to heartbreak and struggle.
Victoria will be portrayed by Chelsea Frei , with Maurice Benard playing the role of her father. It will span much of her life and familial relationships, focusing especially on the father she both loved deeply and occasionally clashed with. The film covers her younger brother Frank's tragic death, as well as Victoria's rocky romance with Carmine Agnello, a man her father disapproved of. Since it was adapted from Victoria's memoir This Family of Mine: What It was Like Growing Up Gotti, on top of having so much influence from her personally, it's sure to express her perspective on everything her family has dealt with.
Victoria told Page Six that she was hopeful the Lifetime movie would clear up some misconceptions about the Gottis, though she hadn't seen the final cut at the time. She felt it showed a new side of her father, one that wasn't entirely glowing; her conflict with John was depicted even though she still had affection for him. And she was aware that not everyone would share her interpretation of events.
"I think everyone has their own view on how things are played out," Victoria said. "I think at the end of the day it's interesting how each child or each person views their life or their relationship with different people."
Victoria Gotti is a true story in that it is based on real people and real events, but it's still filtered through one person's experience. That means it may be colored by how Victoria viewed things, though her insider knowledge means it's still a close and personal look at the Gotti family. It could offer a unique take on a story people might think they already know.

Movie Reviews

Now streaming on:
My wife and I have been watching “ American Crime Story: The People vs. OJ Simpson ” (second time for me, first for her), and I’ve been impressed by its depth and quality all over again. One thing that's notable on a repeat viewing is the ensemble performers who fell a bit under the shadow of Emmy winners Sarah Paulson , Courtney B. Vance , and Sterling K. Brown . In particular, John Travolta is fantastic, finding just the right balance of old-school bravado and increasing insecurity in his portrayal of Bob Shapiro. There’s a bit of Shapiro’s arrogance in Travolta’s turn as John Gotti in “Gotti,” but that’s all that it shares with the FX series. There may one day be a great movie made about John Gotti. This one ain’t it.
Directed by Kevin Connolly —yes, “E” from “ Entourage ” directs movies now—“Gotti” is a film without a voice. It pulls from pop culture representations of mobsters to create a Frankenmob movie. Jumping back and forth between eras of Gotti’s life, moving from his son’s perspective (it’s based on a book by John Jr.) to the old man’s, and cluttered with enough clichéd lines of dialogue to play “Mob Jargon Bingo,” “Gotti” has zero POV. Well, its POV is basically someone who watched too much “ Goodfellas ” and “The Sopranos,” and then saw a Discovery Channel special about Gotti that they barely remember.
The trend of the day may be to end biopics with photos of the real-life subjects of the film, but Connolly chooses to open with a montage of Gotti photos and clips, set to a new song by Pitbull, who contributes multiple songs, as well as some of his hits, to the movie. Because when someone thinks of John Gotti, they think Pitbull, of course.
“Gotti” then bounces around through greatest hits of Gotti’s ascendancy in the mafia, structured around a conversation an older Gotti is having with his son, who is considering taking a plea in a case that he’s currently facing. Dad is an old-fashioned mob boss, and the thought of taking a plea is just below considering ratting on the list of Cardinal Sins. You don’t give into the government. You always keep fighting. Never let them win. And Gotti notoriously beat so many charges that he became known as the Teflon Don.
How Gotti went from a soldier in the mob to the King of the organization is loosely sketched in over the course of “Gotti,” but it’s all just an excuse for the kind of awful mob dialogue that reminded me more of the satirical “ Mafia! ” then anything else. Gotti says things like “There is no choice—there is only what you do,” and speaks about manhood and duty so much that it becomes numbing long before it’s over. It just wallows in the clichés, and so this portrayal of Gotti never feels threatening, even when he warns someone that he will “park a bus up your ass fucking sideways.”
As if he knew there wasn’t really a movie here as much as some nice outfits and bad Joisey accents, Connolly layers his film with music choices, including James Brown , Dean Martin , The Escape Club, Duran Duran, and a lot of Pitbull. It’s a crutch of filmmaking to over-rely on music, and even the crutch here is annoying. It’s not just a movie with too many music choices, but the choices aren’t quite right either.
Gotti resided over a tumultuous time in the history of the mob, and how he got there and the way he wielded his power could make for an interesting film. It would have to be one that focused more tightly on a portion of his life, or possibly turned into a series. And it would have to be one that relied less on music, makeup, and clichés than “Gotti,” which never gets as deep into the life of its title character. He may have been a murderer, but even Gotti deserved better than this.
This review is based on the version of "Gotti" that screened last month at the Cannes Film Festival.

17 A-listers who starred in critics' most-hated movies
- Some A-listers have starred in films that critics have unanimously hated.
- Each movie on this list received a 0% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes .
- John Travolta starred in two of the most-hated films: "Look Who's Talking Now!" and "Gotti."
Not all movies starring A-listers are hits. In fact, some of them become total box-office flops and are hated by critics and audiences alike.
For example, in 1991, Sean Connery returned to the role of Juan Sánchez-Villalobos Ramírez in "Highlander II: The Quickening" after the first film became a cult classic. Unfortunately, the second film was received negatively and lost the studio money, earning just $15 million at the worldwide box office against a $34 million budget, according to Box Office Mojo .
All the movies on our list received a 0% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes , who certainly had some choice words for the films.
Look at all the A-listers who starred in critics' most-hated movies.
Zoë Ettinger contributed to a prior version of this story.
In 1984, Bo Derek starred in "Bolero," which is about a wealthy woman determined to lose her virginity.
Derek plays a young woman named Ayre who decides to travel the world after college graduation to find the perfect man to lose her virginity to.
Famed critic Roger Ebert wrote, "The real future of 'Bolero' is in home cassette rentals, where your fast forward and instant replay controls will supply the editing job the movie so desperately needs."
Sean Connery starred in the 1991 sequel "Highlander II: The Quickening."
While the original "Highlander" plot is by no means simple, the story of "The Quickening" is even more convoluted, with global warming destroying the planet, the new revelation that Connor (Christopher Lambert) and the immortals are actually aliens from a different planet, and more.
Roger Ebert wrote, "'Highlander II: The Quickening' is the most hilariously incomprehensible movie I've seen in many a long day — a movie almost awesome in its badness."
Dianne Wiest played an opera star in the 2002 film "Merci Docteur Rey."
Wiest plays an opera singer named Victoria who has to inform her son that his estranged father was murdered — and he realizes that he might have accidentally witnessed it.
Time Out's Jessica Winter called the film a "limp, smirky lark."
John Travolta starred in "Look Who's Talking Now" in 1993, the third film in the trilogy. But this time, the dogs can talk instead of the babies.
Married couple James (Travolta) and Mollie (Kirstie Alley) are back again in "Look Who's Talking Now" — except this time, the dogs are narrating the action.
The Independent critic Quentin Curtis called the film "a glutinous mix of all that's worst in movies," while Variety's Dan Cox wrote that it "runs feebly on the calculated steam of its forebears."
Travolta also starred in the 2018 box-office flop "Gotti." The film follows the notorious crime boss' rise in the Gambino crime family.
"Gotti" is a rather straightforward biopic of the infamous gangster who was eventually sentenced to life in prison after getting convicted of organizing the murder of his old boss, Paul Castellano.
"I'd rather wake up next to a severed horse head than ever watch 'Gotti' again," wrote Johnny Oleksinski in the New York Post.
David Spade starred in 1987's "Police Academy 4: Citizens on Patrol."
The fourth film in the series centers on citizen cops joining the force, which predictably goes horribly.
Critic Kevin Thomas wrote in the Los Angeles Times , "What's so amazing about the 'Police Academy' movies is that they keep being made even though they stopped being funny after the hilarious original."
Antonio Banderas starred in 2002's "Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever" as a government agent searching for the most deadly weapon on Earth.
Banderas plays the titular Ecks, while Lucy Liu plays his opposing secret agent Sever. Each one is looking for a new type of nanobot that can cause heart attacks.
Critic William Bibbiani wrote for Consequence , "I guess not every bad movie has a cult following in its future. Some of them are just kinda bad."
In 2004, Jon Voight starred in "Superbabies: Baby Geniuses 2," in which the baby geniuses must take on an evil media mogul.
What's this film about? Exactly what the title says: A group of preternaturally smart babies who go up against a villainous super-baby named Kahuna to save the world.
Joanne Kaufman of The Wall Street Journal simply called the film "unspeakably ghastly."
Gabrielle Union starred in the 2005 drama "Constellation."
Union's not the only A-lister who appeared in this generational story — her co-stars included Zoe Saldaña and Billy Dee Williams. Each plays a member of the Boxer clan, who are left reeling from the death of Union's character, Carmel.
"Scenes in which little or nothing happens pass by slowly, and the only point of suspense is whether the number of tearful hugs at the end will reach double digits," wrote the New York Post's Kyle Smith.
Jon Hamm starred in the 2010 film "Stolen" as a detective haunted by his son's disappearance.
"Stolen" switches between the present-day, when Hamm's character attempts to solve a cold case from the 1950s in order to cope with the disappearance of his son, and the past, when the murder happened.
"The low-boil mystery-thriller 'Stolen' was once known as 'The Boy in the Box' and then 'Stolen Lives,' but now has a title as nondescript as its contents," wrote Noel Murray for the AV Club.
A young Elle Fanning starred in "The Nutcracker in 3D" in 2010. Fanning stars as Mary, whose nutcracker comes to life on Christmas.
"The Nutcracker in 3D" is another in the long list of on-screen adaptations of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's ballet, this time starring Fanning as Mary, a young girl who decides to help her friend, the Nutcracker, overthrow the villainous Rat King.
Critic Frank Scheck wrote for The Hollywood Reporter , "Delivering the cinematic equivalent of a lump of coal in a Christmas stocking, 'The Nutcracker in 3D' is an apparent Scrooge-like attempt by Russian filmmaker Andrei Konchalovsky to forever ruin children's associations with the classic Yuletide ballet."
Halle Berry starred in the 2012 film "Dark Tide" as a shark expert.
Berry stars as Kate, a dive instructor and shark expert, who finds herself on the verge of foreclosure and unable to get back in the water after the death of a fellow diver during one of her expeditions. To help herself get back in the game (and to pay some bills), she agrees to supervise a dangerous dive to a shark feeding ground.
The Guardian critic Peter Bradshaw wrote, "The sharks themselves are the only ones to emerge with credit from this."
Eddie Murphy starred in 2012's "A Thousand Words" as a literary agent whose life falls apart when a magical tree appears in his backyard.
In "A Thousand Words," Murphy plays a literary agent who discovers he doesn't have long to live after a magical tree appears in his backyard. Every word he speaks corresponds to a leaf on the tree — when the leaves eventually all fall off, he will die. So, he must figure out a way to break this curse and perhaps become a better person.
"A thousand words? Try two words: Stay away. Murphy does a pretty good job keeping up with the various indignities heaped on him but the movie as a whole ends up sinking," wrote We Got This Covered's Kristal Cooper.
In 2015, Adam Sandler starred in "The Ridiculous 6," a film about six strangers in the Wild West who discover they all have the same father.
"The Ridiculous 6" is one of the films produced through Sandler's deal with Netflix, with this one being a clear parody of Westerns like "The Hateful Eight" and "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly."
Brad Newsome of The Sydney Morning Herald called the film "a lazy pastiche of westerns and western spoofs, replete with lazy, racist jokes that can't just be waved away with a waft of the irony card. Woeful."
Kate Beckinsale starred in "The Disappointments Room" in 2016 as a mother who discovers a haunting mystery in her new home.
The titular room refers to an attic that Beckinsale's character discovers. Families who lived in the home in the 1800s used to hide disabled children in the attic. She soon has visions, suffers a breakdown, and soon completely loses her grip on reality.
The Los Angeles Times' Katie Walsh wrote, "This spooky house flick would be better off locked up in the attic and forgotten for good."
Billy Bob Thornton starred in "London Fields" in 2018 as a dying author looking for one last great story.
"London Fields" is based on the novel of the same name. Thornton stars a writer, Samson, who is both terminally ill and suffering from writer's block. When a mysterious clairvoyant woman enters his life, it seems like he finally might have a new story to tell.
Critic Peter Sobczynski wrote on RogerEbert.com that this film is "a boring and garish mess that even fans of the book will find nearly impossible to follow."
In 2018, Jim Carrey starred in the murder mystery "Dark Crimes."
In the film, Carrey plays a detective who finds similarities between a cold case he's been working on and a crime described in a recently published novel.
For Spectrum Culture , critic Josh Goller wrote, "There's not even much novelty in seeing Carrey play so aggressively against type in this oppressively artless slog."
Oscar winner Michael Caine starred in 1987's "Jaws: The Revenge" ... but he's never actually seen it.
The same year Caine won his first Academy Award for his performance in "Hannah and Her Sisters," he also starred in the fourth "Jaws" film as a character named Hoagie Newcomb, who teams up with the Brody family to once again battle a shark.
Sheila Benson wrote in the Los Angeles Times , "Dumb beyond belief, hollow, bloody and nonsensical, it's Universal Studios' vanity movie, a way of providing employment yet again for its Great White icon."
