Editor’s Note: We know that many of you are looking for help writing travel experience essays for school or simply writing about a trip for your friends or family. To inspire you and help you write your next trip essay—whether it’s an essay about a trip with family or simply a way to remember your best trip ever (so far)—we enlisted the help of Professor Kathleen Boardman, whose decades of teaching have helped many college students learn the fine art of autobiography and life writing. Here’s advice on how to turn a simple “my best trip” essay into a story that will inspire others to explore the world.

Welcome home! Now that you’re back from your trip, you’d like to share it with others in a travel essay. You’re a good writer and a good editor of your work, but you’ve never tried travel writing before. As your potential reader, I have some advice and some requests for you as you write your travel experience essay.

Trip Essays: What to Avoid

Please don’t tell me everything about your trip. I don’t want to know your travel schedule or the names of all the castles or restaurants you visited. I don’t care about the plane trip that got you there (unless, of course, that trip is the story).

I have a friend who, when I return from a trip, never asks me, “How was your trip?” She knows that I would give her a long, rambling answer: “… and then … and then … and then.” So instead, she says, “Tell me about one thing that really stood out for you.” That’s what I’d like you to do in this travel essay you’re writing.

The Power of Compelling Scenes

One or two “snapshots” are enough—but make them great. Many good writers jump right into the middle of their account with a vivid written “snapshot” of an important scene. Then, having aroused their readers’ interest or curiosity, they fill in the story or background. I think this technique works great for travel writing; at least, I would rather enjoy a vivid snapshot than read through a day-to-day summary of somebody’s travel journal.

Write About a Trip Using Vivid Descriptions

Take your time. Tell a story. So what if you saw things that were “incredible,” did things that were “amazing,” observed actions that you thought “weird”? These words don’t mean anything to me unless you show me, in a story or a vivid description, the experience that made you want to use those adjectives.

I’d like to see the place, the people, or the journey through your eyes, not someone else’s. Please don’t rewrite someone else’s account of visiting the place. Please don’t try to imitate a travel guide or travelogue or someone’s blog or Facebook entry. You are not writing a real travel essay unless you are describing, as clearly and honestly as possible, yourself in the place you visited. What did you see, hear, taste, say? Don’t worry if your “take” on your experience doesn’t match what everyone else says about it. (I’ve already read what THEY have to say.)

The Importance of Self-Editing Your Trip Essay

Don’t give me your first draft to read. Instead, set it aside and then reread it. Reread it again. Where might I need more explanation? What parts of your account are likely to confuse me? (After all, I wasn’t there.) Where might you be wasting my time by repeating or rambling on about something you’ve already told me?

Make me feel, make me laugh, help me learn something. But don’t overdo it: Please don’t preach to me about broadening my horizons or understanding other cultures. Instead, let me in on your feelings, your change of heart and mind, even your fear and uncertainty, as you confronted something you’d never experienced before. If you can, surprise me with something I didn’t know or couldn’t have suspected.

You Can Do It: Turning Your Trip into a Great Travel Experience Essay

I hope you will take yourself seriously as a traveler and as a writer. Through what—and how—you write about just a small portion of your travel experience, show me that you are an interesting, thoughtful, observant person. I will come back to you, begging for more of your travel essays.

Essay on Resort Hotels

Introduction

The hotel and hospitality industry is an essential sector that contributes largely to the GDP of many countries across the world. The high number of customers in the industry has attracted many investors from different parts (Lee & Yuan, 2017). The hospitality industry is primarily characterized by services such as lodging, food, and drinks. The industry is broad with categories such as resort hotels, suburban hotels, airport hotels, and full services hotels, among others. An analysis of the industry is vital to understand various issues within the hospitality industry (Ibrahim, 2018). The paper seeks to examine resort hotels and relevant information that encompass the specific category in the hospitality industry.

Resort Hotels Description

A resort hotel is a full-service facility meant to provide the needs of vacationers, including drinks, food, and lodging services. Most hotel resorts are located in places that are frequently visited for their unique environment (Lee & Yuan, 2017). Resort hotels provide recreational facilities and other amenities, which are usually a need for many vacationers. In essence, the market segment targeted by resort hotels is primarily composed of tourists from different parts of the world. Local tourists within the resort facility also contribute significantly to the market segment that is targeted by the category (Ibrahim, 2018). The market segment is characterized by high profits, especially from foreign tourists. Equally, vacationers spend a specified time at the resort facility, which makes it necessary to have rooms for lodging services. Customer needs in the market segment are different but well known to all operators in the market. It is important to note that the market segment requires a high level of ethical standards and professionalism (Köşker, Unur & Gursoy, 2019). As such, resort hotels offer self-contained facilities to vacationers from different parts of the world.

Information on Resort Hotels in Canada

Business in the Canadian hospitality industry has been increasing in the last few years, indicating success in the market. In the year 2014, the hotel industry was valued at approximately 17 billion Canadian dollars. In the previous five years, resort hotel revenue in the industry has been increasing majorly due to the high level of international tourism (Lee & Yuan, 2017). By then, there were over 8000 hotel facilities spread in Canada. The level of occupancy in the facilities is approximately 63%, which is indicative of the increased business activity as compared to a decade ago. The industry has the potential to do better, given that international tourism activities have been increasing lately. The Canadian hospitality industry has employed over 100000 people, especially in the resort hotel category. Most operators in the market are equipped with high-end facilities that can attract many people. By the end of 2020, the number of rooms available for lodging is expected to rise, given the high investment rates being witnessed in the industry (Altin, Memili & Sönmez, 2017). The occupancy rate in the resort hotels is expected to increase, given the strategies that many operators have put in place.

Resort Hotels in Ontario

There are many resorts in Ontario that meet the needs of vacationers at different prices. It is important to note that pricing strategy in the industry is based on services provided in the event. It is vital to find out the room categories available for each and their respective rates (Köşker, Unur & Gursoy, 2019). Resorts all over the world are recognized with sports and entertainment activities for vacationers. It is vital to understand recreational facilities that each of the ten hotels provides for clients.

Worry about your grades? See how we can help you with our essay writing service. LEARN MORE The listed resort hotels offer sports and entertainment facilities to their customers. Pool games and television sets are the primary source of entertainment for vacationers. Equally, some resorts listed have golf as a common sport.

The role of a hotel manager excites me due to the responsibilities that are attached. I have a strong passion for leading by example, as a professional in the industry. In the future, I would like to work as a manager in a bid to ensure that issues that affect customers are handled in the right manner. The desire to serve with honesty and diligence drives me to work hard with the hope of making it.

In conclusion, the hospitality industry is growing at a faster rate, especially within the Canadian market. Resort hotels are self-contained with facilities that can meet the needs of most vacationers. However, the increased levels of international tourism provide a chance for the industry to develop even more.

an essay about a resort

Describe your stay at a resort – Sample answers & more

Generally speaking, getting a job with hotels and beach resorts isn’t the most difficult task in the world. Most of these places struggle with staff , and if you show some motivation, and readiness to accept the employment conditions (which in many big resorts means doing long shifts, or having no days off in the main holiday season), they will hire you. However, the game changes when it comes to luxury resorts and five star places. Expectations are higher, you will earn more, and often many applicants compete for each vacancy. In this scenario, the hiring managers can choose. They often come up with creative questions , and one of them is “Describe your stay at a resort”.

Perhaps you’ve never stayed at one –and that’s a big hit to your chances of succeeding in the interview. But more likely than not you’ve already stayed at some resorts, either while working or vacationing , or perhaps both :). The hiring managers wonder what caught your eye , whether you noticed both good and bad things, areas for improvement. Needless to say, you should adjust your answer the position you apply for with a resort . If it is a job of a hotel manager or team leader, try to describe things from managerial perspective. When applying for a job of a maid, you should say what you liked and didn’t in the room, the cleanliness of the place. And if you apply for a job of a cook, food should be your main discussion point.

Anyway, let’s have a look at 7 sample answers to this interesting question. I tried to include on my list a variety of answers for a variety of situations . I hope at least one of them will fit your interview scenario, and the kind of experience you hope to share. Once you are done with the sample answers, do not forget to check also my final thoughts below the list. Enjoy!

7 sample answers to “Describe your stay at a resort” interview question

  • I would describe it as pleasing in general. The place was well-managed , with great attention to detail . Staff had clear instructions, and they acted accordingly. Of course, I couldn’t help the manager inside me , and noticed some areas for improvement. For example, during breakfast I would assign more people to the dining room, since many times the staff didn’t manage to replenish the buffet tables. Or I would change the duration of the automatic lights on the corridors , since for older people they simply switched off too quickly, and sometimes they ended up stranded in the dark. To sum it up, my stay at the resort was great, but you can always improve something , and should strive for improvement, if you want to stay at the top of your game.
  • I would describe my stay at ABC resort as an average experience . Rooms were great and so was the beach, but as a cook with high standards, I could not approve the food. The selection was pretty limited for a place with this price range, and tasting various menu items, I couldn’t help thinking they tried to save money everywhere, and the quality of ingredients was pretty low. If I get a chance to lead the kitchen at your hotel resort, you can be certain that I won’t allow such things to happen.
  • Oh yeah, it was a holiday of my life . White sand, water had just an ideal temperature, and everyone treated my so nicely. What’s more, I met this woman who was also staying alone at a resort, and we had a little romance during the stay. I think I will cherish this stay for a long time, and it definitely motivates me to apply for a job with you, to work here and contribute to this amazing place. Having said that, I realize working at a resort and staying there as a guest are two different things . I know the workload will be hard, and we’ll work 7 days a week during the main season. But I am ready for it, and will enjoy every free minute I have here, to bring back my holiday memories.
  • I was impressed with almost everything there. The cleanliness of the rooms was spotless. That’s something I always notice, because as a maid I have an eye for such things , and know where exactly to look to see whether the room really was cleaned properly. And I also liked the freshness of the blankets, the way the room smelled of flowers, and the balcony of course. My last stay as a beach resort was definitely worth it , and, just like all my previous stays, it helped me to learn more about my own profession, and how to do even a better job as a maid.
  • While I prefer looking for positives, I cannot help criticizing the animators . They just didn’t try hard enough with us. What I noticed is that they followed a certain schedule, and activities, not paying attention to the preferences of the particular group . Individual approach was missing. As someone who also worked as an animator before, and who hopes to have such a job in your resort, I cannot help but criticizing both the managers and the animators for this. Having said that, I do not want to complain. I still feel very blessed for having some money and opportunity to stay at nice resorts once in a while. We should never take such things for granted, especially in this economy.
  • This may surprise you, but I have never stayed in any beach resort . Hence I cannot really describe my stay in one. I have always lived frugally, from paycheck to paycheck. My only way of experiencing life in some resort is working there, and perhaps benefiting from the facilities once I have free time, if such luxuries are offered to the employees of the resort. If they are not it’s still fair enough, and I will simply do my best to learn from my colleagues , and to make sure I handle my working duties to the satisfaction of the managers .
  • Well, how can I describe it? 7 nights, big breakfast every morning, lying on the beach reading books, then big lunch, some sightseeing, big dinner. God I gained five pounds during my short holiday at that resort! To tell you the truth, I have mixed feelings about my stay. Sure, you enjoy the attention of people and everything, but next time around I will look for a more active holiday . Having said that, we can perhaps try to make the stay at a resort such –offering more activities to the guests, such as guided biking tours, hiking, and so on. At the end of the day it will only help the reputation of the resort, and people who aren’t interested in such activities will simply skip them.

Final thoughts and next questions

Don’t be afraid of criticizing things , but try to balance things out with something positive. Remember that nobody wants to employ people who see only the bad things in life. Someone who always complains about something during their holiday has a tendency to do the same at work. And that’s not the impression you want to make in this interview.

And if you’ve never stayed at a resort before , admit it openly. Not everyone can afford such a luxury. Hotel chains and big beach resorts typically have excellent training program in place for new hires . You will learn how to take care of your duties, and excel in the job, even if you’ve never stayed at a similar place as a guest before…. I hope this helps, and wish you good luck in your interview!

TEA, STRAWBERRIES AND STEAMBOATS AT THE CAMERON HIGHLANDS RESORT

This post may contain affiliate links. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. We may receive a small commission when you make a purchase using our link.

The Cameron Highlands is an easy 3 hour bus journey from Kuala Lumpur. Known for its beautiful rolling hills, cooler temperatures, and wonderful tea plantations, the Cameron Highlands is a wonderful change of pace from Kuala Lumpur.

When I started researching hotels to stay at during my trip, I quickly realised that the Cameron Highlands Resort was easily the best hotel option. I’m excited to share some of the things that made my stay at the Cameron Highlands Resort so memorable!

The Cameron Highlands Resort is steeped in history and fully embraces the feel of the Cameron Highlands. Built as an extension from a 1930’s cottage, the resort has a very unique colonial feel, with some of the architecture dating all the way back to 1070!

The hotel feels like you are in a very luxurious yet welcoming colonial home, complete with a shared fireplace (where you can enjoy a fire lighting ceremony if it is a special occasion), wood flooring, and beautiful white shutters.

Each of the Resort’s 56 rooms and suites perfectly captures the colonial yet comfortable feel shown in the lobby.

I stayed in a Deluxe room, which is perfect for a couple with its king sized four-poster bed, spacious seating area, and private balcony overlooking the neighbouring golf course (note all rooms have a balcony).

I was so content to make a cup of tea, which was provided in the room, and sit on the balcony reading my book. It was truly an escape from the hustle and bustle of Kuala Lumpur , and was such a relaxing experience to simply breathe in the cool mountain air while looking at the rolling hills in the distance.

Cameron Highlands Activities

If you want a more active experience, the Cameron Highlands Resort has you covered as well. They can help organise all sorts of tours and fun things to do around the Cameron Highlands .

Jim Thompson Mystery Trail

The Resort organises complimentary walking trail tours, where an experienced resident naturalist explains all about the plants, animals, and extensive history of the area. I did the “ Jim Thompson Mystery Trail ” on my first morning, which was a leisurely 45 minute beginner hike through the jungle with our amazing guide Madi.

During our walk Madi made sure to point out several interesting facts, including background information on Jim Thompson who the walk was named after.

Boh Tea Plantation

The next day we were treated to a half day tour with Madi. This tour explored farther from the hotel and included a visit to the Boh tea plantation .

The tea plantation is absolutely massive and includes a look into how the tea is made, from growing, to refining, to drinking. There is a great little restaurant on a balcony overlooking the tea fields, and Madi expertly showed us some of the lesser known vantage points to take some incredible pictures from!

Strawberry Farm and Temples

The rest of our day included a visit to a strawberry farm, where we were given a pair of scissors and a basket to go and pick our own strawberries. These were some of the best tasting strawberries I’ve ever had, straight from the vine!

Finally, we also visited Sam Poh Temple, which is the oldest Buddhist temple in the area. Madi was providing funny stories throughout the entire tour, making the day even more enjoyable!

And if that doesn’t fill your time in the highlands read my post 12 Things To Do In The Cameron Highlands .

The Spa At The Cameron Highlands Resort

After a long day of sightseeing, one of my favourite things to do is relax in the spa. As you would expect from a luxury hotel, the Spa Village at the Cameron Highlands Resort was one of a kind!

I was treated to a “Fresh Strawberry Escapade” experience in their Spa Village, which was truly one of the most unique spa treatments I’ve ever had.

Strawberries are extremely important in the Cameron Highlands, with countless strawberry farms and products, so this “Escapade” involved a tea and strawberry bath, a 1 hour massage, and strawberry scrub wrap which soothes inflammation and softens the skin.

Seriously, if you have never had a relaxing massage and then been covered in strawberries you need to experience it at least once in your life!

The Spa Village offers a wide range of other treatments as well. From traditional massages, to rose petal facials, to other amazing experiences offered only at the Cameron Highlands Resort (like a Chrysanthemum & Avocado Escape or a “Cameron’s Mint” treatment), the Spa Village is the perfect way to relax after a long day with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating areas to chill out.

The Cameron Highlands Resort has a good number of in-house  dining options , each with its own character matching its unique location.

I started my day each morning with breakfast at the traditional Dining Room restaurant, which offered a combination of made to order dishes and a self-served buffet. The dining room overlooked the neighbouring golf course and mountains in the distance, and was the perfect setting to plan out my day.

I also had dinner one night in the Dining Room, which transforms into a smart casual restaurant with an excellent selection of colonial, western, and local foods.

Each day the culinary team would go out and get the freshest ingredients, and this attention to detail really pays off because the food was all excellent. Be sure to save room for dessert, because there were some delicious choices, and as we all know calories don’t count on vacation!

Afternoon Tea

Afternoon tea is another important part of the Cameron Highlands, and the Cameron Highlands Resort organised a perfect one in their Jim Thompson Tea Room. The beautifully furnished Tea Room offers a place to sit and relax while enjoying a wide range of pastries, sandwiches, and strawberries with your cup of tea.

This experience reminded me of being back in England, and I really felt miles away from the heat and craziness of the city. A delicious lunch is also served daily in the same Tea Room, which is a perfect spot to kick back and relax while having some traditional dishes.

Steamboat Dinner

Finally, no Cameron Highlands trip is complete without a proper “Steamboat” dinner experience. Luckily you will not have to venture far to find the best Steamboat in the Cameron Highlands, because the Resort has one in their very own “Gonbei” restaurant.

For the unacquainted, a Steamboat dinner involves a pot of boiling soup with different flavors, where you cook your meat and vegetables yourself tableside.

Situated near the guest rooms in the back of the hotel, Gonbei is a half outdoor seating area which lets you fully appreciate the cool night air while eating your meal.

The manager of the restaurant was exceptionally nice, making recommendations on the best combinations of food and explaining how the process worked, from picking our boiling base to adding the right amount of meat and vegetables.

It’s difficult for me to pick my best meal at the Cameron Highlands Resort , but I would have to lean towards Gonbei because the food was not only incredible, but the entire experience was so much fun and memorable!

The Cameron Highlands Resort is the premier resort in the Cameron Highlands, and after my stay, it is easy to see why they have earned their stellar reputation. The setting and amenities are beautiful, the food is outstanding, the activities very well organised, and the customer service is always fast and friendly.

Next time you find yourself in Malaysia, make sure to take a trip to the Cameron Highlands and experience the Cameron Highlands Resort firsthand!

I hope that this article has inspired you to visit the Cameron Highlands and stay at the Cameron Highlands Resort. If you have any questions or comments please share in the comments below.

In conclusion, we can say that tourism is a very productive activity both for the tourist and the government. As they support each other simultaneously. Also, the government should consider improving the conditions of the country as more and more number of tourist visit their country.

Above all, tourism is one of the fastest-growing industry in the world that has changed the scenario of the world.

What Is a Resort? Please Explain

Rotundus Resort - Rotundus Family Resort - Resorts - Family Resorts

A resort is a place used for vacation, relaxation or as a daytime getaway. While this can be a single structure such as a hotel, it also can be a whole island or a ship at sea. One of the most looked-for aspects of a resort is that visitors are freed from most daily errands, which are typically taken care of by the facility’s staff. Numerous activities are usually presented at resorts, as well as massages, meals, live entertainment and cosmetic treatments.

There are many types of resorts. Some cater to a certain audience, such as families or single adults, while others attempt to have a wider plea. Depending on the philosophy behind the resort, the staff might strive to meet every need the guests have, allowing them to relax quietly. In turn, some resorts might offer vigorously directed physical activities such as hiking or mountain climbing.

Different resorts frequently offer very diverse experiences. Some function like a luxury hotel and give their clients a day or two of thorough relaxation. Other resorts function like small cities, even providing long-term housing for those who want a lengthy stay. Larger locations can sometimes have whole shopping malls within their borders, complete with a range of restaurants and other stores.

A resort also can be built around a solitary theme. This theme could be anything from a favourite movie to a historical time period. Resorts that are built around a specific theme typically offer activities and events that are in some way related with it, such as horse riding lessons in a Western-themed ranch. The actual location of the buildings also can be used to describe some resorts. A beach or ski resort is a case of this. Even though there might be many natural or manmade allures in the immediate area, the resort itself is essentially defined by the destination.

An assembly of business definitions have been established that permit a location to be consistently classified as a resort. A proper resort, conferring to these standards, bids their patrons at least one signature facility, which is distinct as the main activity the visitors can enjoy. There also is the inclusion of at least five secondary experiences, such as spa aids, sports activities and hiking trails that can be exploited. Lastly, they should offer their guests with rooms for the night and offer some type of dining prospect.

Blue Hotel and Resort Review Essay

Introduction.

The name of this business is Blue Hotel and Resort. The business is hotel-based but targets local and international tourists who are coming into the country all year round. The business will mostly be aimed at taking advantage and promoting local tourism, which has not been very much exploited because investors and the government have been concentrating on international tourists.

Type of Business

The business will be a partnership because it requires a large amount of capital which will be contributed by the partners. Investors will be included as partial owners of the business. A large amount of capital will be used to rent business premises at different localities and towns suited for local and international tourists’ attraction sites across the country, development of these apartments to suit the requirements and standards, and equipping of these hotels with necessities to carry out the business. The business will start by managing at least ten hotels at different places best-considered tourists sites across the country. Plans will include buying land and building hotel apartments to be owned by the hotel. This will enable a shift from rental to individually owned apartments.

Services and Products

The hotel will take care of all or most of the tourist’s needs while in the apartment and will provide food, beverages, snacks, and drinks for sale. Different services will include entertainment, gym, and sanitary services. The business services will include room rental services for local and international tourists taking long-term or short-term holidays. Transport services for both goods and people will also be available through business-owned vehicles. In addition, informational systems such as the internet will be made available to the tourists once in the apartments to connect with their businesses and families. All these services will be paid for separately according to the usage by the individual. Tourists shall also be assisted to access various services such as those offered by the government officials and goods according to their requests for the necessary possible arrangements. The business services and products will thus be made as affordable and known to the locals as possible as compared to the competitors’. In addition, the products and services will be modified over time to suit the locals as well as ensure a diversity of products and services to suit the international tourists.

Role of Accounting and the accounting staff

The role of accounting in this business is important since it will ensure that careful planning of the available investment funds is possible. Careful planning will ensure that the business not only achieves its goals and objectives but that these goals and objectives are practically aligned to the excelling of the business through the making of profits. Accounting will ensure that funds are allocated in the most optimal way to gain optimal profits and reduce and eliminate chances of incurring losses through the reduction and management of risks involved in the hotel business.

Transparency of any business is important and therefore accounting will ensure that financial account details are prepared and reported to the business owners to take appropriate action relating to the actual financial position of the business.

Accounting staff needs to be people who are competent enough in the accounting field to understand and implement practical accounting methods in the hotel business. Experience in the field would also be desirable to speed the process and cut on cost, minimize chances of errors, and have confidence. Practitioners will also be required to be of high professional and personal integrity as well as knowledgeable in internal control techniques (Internal Controls, n.d.).

Budgeting, internal controls and management, and work characteristics for the business staff

Any person entering a business should have a professional level of budgeting, internal controls, and cash management before entering business since the excellence of any business will partly be determined by these components. Professional budgeting and cash management will ensure that the businessman allocates properly the available resources to various components of the business to maximize profits while minimizing the expenses. Internal control systems are important in mitigating against risks, threats, and vulnerability of the business, and managers need to be aware of the systems that are important in safeguarding the business assets against losses, compliance with the laws, recording and accounting of revenues and expenditures, and maintenance of the accounting records among other issues (Internal Controls, n.d.). In addition to making sure that the staff are competent, supportive attitudes by managers towards the internal controls, identification of the logical and applicable and reasonable control objectives and adoption of effective and efficient control techniques, there will be clear documentation of all events and activities in accounting and transactions, separation of duties of staff and access and accountability to resources in the business (Internal Controls, n.d.). Investment in the hotel industry would be expected to face such risks like fear for domestic and international terrorism, which means that security for the people is important. The hotel shall invest in intelligent services up to capability or work with the government to minimize risks related to security. Managers will review financial information provided by the accounting staff and use it to estimate future results of current investment plans as well as make appropriate adjustments, make future investment decisions in the growing sectors of the business, estimate future financial positions as well as control excessive expenditure. Accounting will ensure the identification of challenges to achieving the goals and objectives and making sure that the organization’s funds are properly allocated to counter these challenges.

‘Storybook ending’ for Stanford golf star Rachel Heck, who has decided to go out on top

Rachel Heck of Stanford

Rachel Heck’s championship-clinching point at La Costa Resort & Spa’s North Course caps her college career after star made decision that shocked golf world

There wasn’t much of a sunset Wednesday, with the marine layer hugging the coast and blocking the sun’s descent into the Pacific Ocean.

As far as a sunset to a career, it was glorious.

Rachel Heck lagged a birdie putt to a few inches on the 15 th green to score the clinching point in No. 1-ranked Stanford’s 3-2 victory against UCLA in the match play final at the NCAA women’s golf championships on Omni La Costa Resort & Spa’s North Course. She sprinted into the arms of jubilant teammates and soon was in a golf cart riding to the 16 th green for the trophy presentation.

“A storybook ending,” she said to her teammates in the cart, shaking her head.

Not a bad way to go out.

Heck came to Stanford in 2020 as one of the country’s most decorated junior golfers, then had a freshman season for the ages: a scoring average of 69.75 over 25 rounds (the first in history under 70), the Annika Award as the top women’s collegiate golfer, the NCAA individual title.

Her sophomore season was derailed by a bout with mononucleosis, but she returned in time to claim the NCAA team title.

Then her shoulder started hurting, then her elbow, then her fingers numbed, then she couldn’t hold a club. She was diagnosed with thoracic outlet syndrome, where there isn’t enough space for the blood vessels or nerves between ribs and collarbone. She underwent surgery to remove a rib two Februarys ago, wiping out her junior season and the start of her senior year.

Last winter, she was still experiencing pain and admits she nearly shut it down for good.

“It was really touch-and-go,” Stanford coach Anne Walker said. “She played the fall on and off, with some pain and without pain. Starting in January, she was really not feeling like maybe she was going to be able to play. So we rested her.”

Heck returned for the conference championships, having barely practiced over the previous weeks, and finished seventh. She was the individual medalist a couple weeks later at NCAA Regionals. Then Wednesday, with a national title on the line, Walker didn’t think twice: Heck would play in the final spot of the five matches.

“It was not by accident,” Walker said. “We knew the gravity of today. She’s a mature kid. She’s been through a lot, and it felt like it would take a lot to rattle her. And I think that’s what we saw today.”

Heck had a lengthy birdie putt on the first hole and confidently walked it in. She was on that kind of heater. By the turn, she was 4-up. She nearly closed out UCLA”s Kate Villegas on the 13 th hole before clinching at 15.

“I’m honestly still speechless,” Heck said. “I mean, this is the moment that kept me going through the injuries, just picturing this. The fact that it happened is absolutely unreal.”

What carried her, though, was a decision she made months ago that shocked the golf world given her generational talent: She’s not turning pro.

The political science major is finishing an internship with global investment firm KKR and has a permanent job waiting for her after graduation (and her sister’s wedding three days later). She also is completing Air Force ROTC and will become a lieutenant.

This is her life now.

Heck made the announcement in March in a first-person essay in nolayingup.com golf website, writing: “I was strongly considering attributing my decision to my injuries. It is true that even if I wanted to, I do not know if my body would hold up on tour. But frankly, after a couple of years of painful deliberation, I have come to realize that I do not want to play professional golf. I do not want a life on the road and in the public eye. I no longer dream of the U.S. Open trophies and the Hall of Fame.”

It relaxed her, unshackled her, liberated her.

“It helped because for a while I’ve known that’s what I want to do,” Heck said in Wednesday’s twilight. “It was hard once I decided that to talk to my parents about it, talk to everyone about it because everyone was asking, ‘When are you going to go pro?’ It was a whole lot of outside stress off the course, thinking about what my next step is and how to tell people.

“Once that was out there, and seeing all the love and support I got, was super overwhelming in the best way. It helped me play freely, knowing I’m so beyond happy with where my life is right now and I wouldn’t change anything for a second.”

Even after playing so well here?

“I think it’s funny,” Heck said. “A lot of people after regionals and throughout this week are, ‘Are you sure you don’t want to go pro?’ I’m like, I don’t know where y’all read that I’m not turning pro because I don’t think I can do it. That’s not what I (want). That’s not me, that’s not where I see my life going. I think this is the perfect bow on an incredible journey in this game.”

Stanford also got points from Megha Ganne and Kelly Xu (who beat Carlsbad High School alum Meghan Royal). UCLA’s points came from Zoe Campos and Caroline Canales, the latter after holing out from the fairway on 18.

The NCAA format is grueling — four rounds of stroke play followed by three rounds of match play, a possibility of 126 holes in six days.

Everyone else will take a few days off, then head back to the range to grind some more.

Not Heck. She might play some amateur tournaments, when or if work permits.

“It’s a little bit more enjoyable because this really is it for me,” Heck said. “This is the end of a chapter. I’m not going to go rest for a couple days and pick up the clubs again. I’m going to leave them in the locker for a little bit.”

Israel and Gaza: Despair and What-Ifs

More from our inbox:, trump, oil and big money in politics, ‘journey’ as metaphor, providing help for the homeless and the mentally ill.

To the Editor:

Re “ In Israel, ‘the Darkness Is Everywhere,’ ” by Megan K. Stack (Opinion guest essay, May 18):

I appreciate Ms. Stack’s essay, in which she makes several important observations about current attitudes among Israelis. However, she leaves out the tragic choices that Palestinians have themselves made in Gaza and the West Bank.

In particular, after the Israeli withdrawal in 2005, Gazans had the opportunity to use huge amounts of international aid to build new residential communities and seaside commercial and tourist destinations.

Instead, they diverted essentially all investment into war preparations, including the rocket and tunnel technology that has proved so formidable in several wars with Israel since then. The extremism of attitudes in this conflict isn’t limited to one side.

Stephen Hall San Francisco

I am grateful to The New York Times for publishing Megan K. Stack’s essay. We need more articles on what it is really like on the ground in Israel, and, as disheartening as it may be, we are all better and more informed for reading it.

Only when Jews in the United States (I am one of them) obtain a greater understanding of the horrible plight of the Palestinian people and what they have been subjected to over decades will we be able to affect our government’s policies to produce a more hopeful outcome for the region.

Until then, this vicious cycle will continue, because, as Ms. Stack so eloquently described, “there is no wall thick enough to suppress forever a people who have nothing to lose.”

Roy Friedland Greensboro, N.C.

I am dismayed at Megan K. Stack’s one-sided analysis of Israeli policy toward the Palestinians. I am a lifelong supporter of Israel, but I share Ms. Stack’s concern regarding Israel’s extreme right-wing government. Placing all, or even most, of the responsibility at the foot of Israeli Jews, however, is disingenuous.

Consider a counterfactual history in which Arab and Palestinian leaders had said “yes” to any of the opportunities to live next to Jewish neighbors in peace. A simple Arab “yes” might have resulted in two separate states, for two separate indigenous peoples, living side by side.

There might have been no rise of Hamas and Hezbollah, suicide bombings or defensive barriers. Both parties could have lived in peace, dignity and prosperity.

Perhaps the next time an olive branch is offered, if there is a next time, the Palestinians will reply “yes.” What do they have to lose?

Stephen E. Green San Jose, Calif.

Re “ Trump Solicits Billion Dollars at Oil Dinner ” (front page, May 10):

It is a clarion call to get big money out of politics.

You report that Donald Trump “told a group of oil executives and lobbyists gathered at a dinner at his Mar-a-Lago resort last month that they should donate $1 billion to his presidential campaign because, if elected, he would roll back environmental rules that he said hampered their industry.”

Fossil fuel interests already pour tens of millions of dollars into political campaigns, mostly to Republicans, pushing that party’s congressional delegation and presidential nominee to oppose action against climate change.

This push for contributions and profits is in the face of the virtual unanimity of climate scientists that burning fossil fuels is the main cause of global warming.

Big contributions from gun, pharmaceutical, insurance, financial and other wealthy interests also powerfully influence our system in their favor, usually to the disadvantage of ordinary people. When one or a few big donors can buy more political speech than tens of millions of ordinary people combined, the system is rigged in favor of those who already have the most.

Public funding of election campaigns has worked well at the state, county and city levels. It elevates merit and the public interest in government decision-making and builds confidence in our system.

Richard Barsanti Western Springs, Ill.

Re “ When Did Everything Turn Into a ‘Journey’? ” (front page, May 16):

Name the journey — infertility, breast cancer, weight loss, motherhood or a cathartic vacation — and I’ve been on it.

“Journey” has become a euphemism for struggle, often a long, winding road with ups and downs. Some people may reach the finish line and celebrate triumphantly. Others may never get there, leaving loved ones to wonder how their “choose your own adventure” could have followed a different chapter. No journey is ever truly complete.

Infertility may be behind me, but its wake — a stillborn son, a ruptured uterus, a C-section scar, new family members in our surrogates who carried our daughters — will reverberate for my lifetime.

Many individuals will face infertility for the first time today, tomorrow or someday in the future. I always make time for those who reach out to me, hoping my experience can help them — or, at the very least, give them a chance to talk to someone on the metaphorical “other side.”

Journeys can break us or make us into someone new. Whatever euphemism we use, the important thing is don’t make it your ending when you get to the other side. Make it a new beginning to help those who follow in your footsteps.

Lia Buffa De Feo New York

With respect to cancer, its patients and their families — and all those dismayed by what linguists call “semantic drift” — let’s agree to call cancer a “situation.” Not a sentimental, self-help journey. Not a grim or rousing battle. Definitely something fraught and serious: a situation that compels utmost attention and action over time, time that makes no promises.

Karin Halvorson Hillhouse Washington

Re “ Citing Safety, New York Moves Mentally Ill People From the Subway ” (news article, May 11):

As New Yorkers daily enter our transit system, the sight of men and women sleeping on station benches or in subway cars causes mixed emotions ranging from dismay to fear to disgust. The mantra from the riders, either mumbled or spoken aloud, usually goes: “Why can’t the mayor clean this up?”

And it’s a mantra that has, for decades now, moved mayors, under the guise of compassion, to take aggressive action to remove from the subways those who are poor, more often than not homeless, and desperately struggling with mental health issues.

Of course, the cynics in us understand the politics of the moment and the need for mayors to show strength and resolve, even if their actions provide only a short-term fix.

Yes, these are difficult and seemingly intractable problems. But we’re never going to find lasting solutions unless we begin to understand and address the root issues.

As a start, we need to understand how these folks were allowed to fall deeper and deeper into the cracks. How community-based health and mental health systems — often nonexistent or, at best, bare-bones in poor communities — were unable to provide any real, meaningful support before they became so lost to us.

Most immediately, though, the city should engage with high-quality mental health teams to inundate the subway system, offering more than just a stay in a dilapidated shelter or an involuntary commitment to a psychiatric facility. And it should study the work of other cities, which have used programs such as Housing First to help address the mental health issues of those living on the streets by providing permanent housing.

Arnold S. Cohen New York The writer is an adjunct professor at Fordham Law School and former president of Partnership for the Homeless.
