of 17 Best Hindi Biopic Movies of All Time

Biopics are the order of the day. And in a country like India, which is replete with talent in any given field of work, biopics make for engaging mediums of entertainment, which bring forth a person’s life story to the big screen. And it goes without saying that audiences too, lap up their beloved icons’ biographical representations with great interest.

Right from sports persons to businessperson, or politicians to commoners that stare in the face of adversity, India boasts of heroic stories from all nooks and crannies. Filmmakers, too, make the most of this and bring such sagas to the big screen at every given chance. ‘Raja Harishchandra’, India’s first ever feature film, too was a biopic, which heralded a new era of filmmaking. Here’s the list of Bollywood biopic movies that piqued audiences’ interest.

17. Haseena Parkar (2017)

biography films bollywood

As if movies by the dozen on underworld mafia kingpin Dawood Ibrahim weren’t enough, filmmaker Apoorva Lakhia decided to bring to life his sister Haseena Parkar’s story too! An otherwise insipid tale, which could have been more insightful, with a detailed glimpse into the life of Mumbai’s dreaded “Aapa”, the film could have worked wonders. Shraddha Kapoor portrayed the titular character but did not breathe life into it. The film only turned out to be a dreary docu-drama instead of an exciting crime thriller.

16. Rang Rasiya (2014)

biography films bollywood

This Ketan Mehta film ruffled a lot of feathers before it finally saw the light of day! Right from the time the film on India’s celebrated 19 th century artist was released at the London Film Festival in 2008, it was eyed as Mehta’s way of bringing the painter’s licentious side to the fore. Be it Nandana Sen going full Monty in some shots or the lead pair’s intimate scenes, Rang Rasiya kept getting delayed for various reasons. But it was Ketan Mehta’s strong belief in the subject that helped in the release of the film six years later!

15. Daddy (2017)

biography films bollywood

Directed by Ashim Ahluwalia, the film starring Arjun Rampal, is based on the life of gangster-turned-politician Arun Gawli, which brought Rampal all the rave reviews. This political crime drama highlights the man’s rise to power post his frequent run-ins with dreaded don Dawood Ibrahim back in the late 1980s and how he turns to politics to make amends. The film had a slow start at the box office but it did manage to grab quite a few eyeballs.

14. Sarbjit (2016)

biography films bollywood

This Omung Kumar directed film, starring Randeep Hooda in the title role, was based on late Indian Sarbjit Singh, a farmer from Punjab, who in an inebriated state, crosses the border to Pakistan, where he was mistaken as an Indian spy and tortured in jail. His sister Dalbir Kaur, played by Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, ran from pillar to post to prove his innocence but failed to save her brother. The movie received a mixed response at the box office but it was Hooda’s honest portrayal of Sarbjit that stood above everything else in the biographical drama.

13. Mary Kom (2014)

biography films bollywood

Directed by Omung Kumar, this Priyanka Chopra starrer was a successful take on the life of Indian boxing queen Mary Kom. Mom to a set of twins in real life, the Manipuri sportswoman overcame marriage pressures and gender bias to go on and win medals for the country at international dos. Pee Cee, for once, did a very fine job and managed to work her magic at the box office as the titular character, but the truth sadly remained unchanged: Priyanka earned way much more money by portraying Mary than what Mary earned all her life!

12. Bhaag Milkha Bhaag (2013)

Right from copying his mannerisms to his trademark running style, Farhan had everything spot on, which brought him laurels!

11. M. S. Dhoni: The Untold Story (2016)

Although the film had hit the right notes, one thing that stuck out like a sore thumb was projecting Dhoni as a ‘saint’, despite some controversies the ace cricketer’s professional front was mired in.

10. Guru (2007)

biography films bollywood

Dhirubhai’s gritty struggle and phenomenal rise got a feature-length it deserved. And unlike other biopics, ‘Guru’ does not shy away from exploring the darker shades of Dhirubhai’s personality as well as his transactions with the business and administrative world. Mani Ratnam never set out to make an eulogy out of it and stuck to his guns. He extracted fine performances from Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai but Mani’s masterstroke came in the form of Manikdas Gupta and Shyam Saxena played by Mithun Chakravarthy and Madhavan.

9. Dangal (2016)

biography films bollywood

This Aamir Khan starrer was one emotional tale of a father-daughter duo, loosely based on the life of Indian wrestling champion Mahavir Singh Phogat from Haryana and his daughters Geeta and Babita. The heart-wrenching story of the Mountain Man, who was mocked for trying to do the unimaginable, saw Nawazuddin Siddiqui playing the lead role in all earnestness. Not only did the film work wonders at the box office, it also helped the rest of India know a man, who literally moved mountains to make the impossible possible!

6. Neerja (2016)

Top 27 Best Biopic Movies of Bollywood You Must Watch (Updated)

Compared to every other film industry across the globe, Bollywood films are often considered far from reality. Recently Shershah released on Amazon prime, Biopic of PVC Captain Vikram Batra did something unique and real.

We have a Hero beating the hell out of more than 10 to 15 goons and if his action sequences are not enough to impress, then he is also an excellent dancer, singer, charmer, and whatnot! Classic Bollywood Movies

Best bollywood drama movies, best romantic bollywood movies, best thriller and horror bollywood movies.

Named "Bollywood" by movie enthusiasts, the Hindi-language film industry accounts for a major portion of the global film space and continues to grow with each title it pumps out. Bollywood beats out Nigeria's Nollywood as well as America's Hollywood to be the world's largest film industry in terms of output and reach, with its content appealing to moviegoers in every corner of the world. But what is it exactly that makes Bollywood so epic, its films so special? Some argue that there's a tried-and-true formula to any quality Bollywood film: swoon-worthy romance, swelling soundtracks, ridiculously attractive lead characters, and plot twists that you can see coming from a mile away. Others say that Bollywood's secret is far simpler—it's just a damn good time from beginning to end.

Either way, these must-watch movies are well worth the two-plus hours you'll probably have to block off in your day to watch them (Bollywood movies are famously long). Whether you're a fan of romance, tragedy, or comedy, there's definitely a film for you in this colorful world. Below, a list of Bollywood staples that you  need  to add to your watch list ,  from epic historical dramas to kickass action movies.

'Mother India' (1957)

A still from the movie Mother India

This epic drama focuses on an impoverished woman who is forced to care for her two sons alone while surviving threats from a nefarious money-lender when her husband leaves the family in disgrace. At the time it was made,  Mother India  was one of the most expensive Hindi movies ever made and is considered one of the most revered movies in Bollywood history.

Dil Chahta Hai (2001)

A still from the movie Dil Chahta Hai

This movie has it all. It's a romantic comedy . It's a drama. It's a heartfelt coming-of-age movie.  Dil Chahta Hai , which won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi, tells the stories of three college friends as they try to navigate life and love after graduation.

Sholay (1975)

A still from the movie

You can't talk about Bollywood without mentioning  Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge . The 1995 classic is widely considered the gold standard for Bollywood rom-coms, featuring a cheeky Shah Rukh Khan and starlet Kajol (and her signature unibrow) as two young people who fall in love on a backpacking trip across Europe.

Pyaasa (1957)

A still from the movie Pyaasa

Loosely based on actual historical events, Mughal-e-Azam tells the story of how 16th-century Mughal Emperor Akbar’s disapproval of his son Prince Salim’s choice of love interest turned into a full-blown war. The movie—which at the time boasted the highest budget of any Indian film by far—took its inspiration from a 1922 stage play and, in a full-circle moment, has since been turned into a Broadway-style musical that debuted in 2016 and toured North America this year.

Saina (2021)

A still from the movie Saina

The Lunchbox  is one of those beautifully touching movies that tells a story you didn't know you desperately needed until you've seen it. In the movie, a woman named Ila tries to rekindle the spark in her marriage by preparing a special lunch for her (not-so-great) husband. The plan goes awry, however, and the lunch ends up in front of an antisocial widower instead. Lagaan (2001)

A still from the movie Lagaan

"Lagaan" translates to "Agricultural Tax," but don't let that put you off. Only within the genius that is Bollywood could a movie about a town outraged by an unprecedented tax increase also be this genuinely engrossing and earn an Oscar nom. It doesn't hurt that the villagers end up playing a game of cricket against the British army officers for the right  not  to pay it.

Panga (2020)

A still from the movie Panga

This inspirational sports movie takes place in the world of Kabbadi, a popular contact sport in India. Insaf Ka Tarazu (1980)

When he's murdered two years later, Bharti is arrested for the crime and put on trial herself.

A still from the movie Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham

The family drama is a heartbreaking story about the ties that bind us but can also break us. And it's so, so, so good.

Lust Stories (2018)

A still from the movie Lust Stories

Much sexier than many of the other titles on this list and within Bollywood in general,  Lust Stories  is an anthology film about four vastly different sexual situations, including an inappropriate student-teacher interaction, a maid's secret desire, the broken trust between a married couple, and one woman's awkward experience with a vibrator. Stream the steamy film on  Netflix  today.

A still from the movie Jodhaa Akbar

Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998)

A still from the movie Kuch Kuch Hota Hai

Shah Rukh Khan makes the list again, this time for a ‘90s rom-com that features not one but two love triangles set about a decade apart. KKHH ’s own director has since criticized the gender politics at play in the film, but it remains a beloved entry in the Bollywood canon for its sweet story and unforgettable style.

Mrs. Serial Killer (2020)

A still from the movie Mrs. Serial Killer

Think  Fast and Furious , but in Hindi and topped with lively musical numbers.
