Diary Tamil Movie

Director Innasi Pandiyan debuts with Diary. At the beginning, the director raises a disclaimer that the movie has taken its liberties to bring in the thrills, but it does not in any way tamper with the scientific temper. It was a relief to read such statements. We feel that we have got a director who respects the audience. He has joined hands with Arulnithi, an actor who has always been prudent and diligent while choosing scripts. Did the combo work?

Varadhan (Arulnithi), who has completed his SI training, is awarded his first assignment of choice. It happens to be an unsolved murder that took place 16 years ago. With the aid of Pavithra (Pavithra Marimuthu), his peer, he attempts to crack the case. In a parallel storyline, a bus starts its journey from Ooty to Coimbatore. At a certain point, the lives of the people on the bus and Varadhan's quest of knowing the truth converge.

As intriguing as it sounds, the x-factor in the script was brought out well during the second half. The first half toils hard to make irrelevant establishments. The blossoming romance and relationship between Varadhan and Pavithra does not hold any significance for the story. It was just a commercial aspect to go over the motion. Chaams, as the side-kick was also not up to the mark.

However, the real story starts unwinding when the bus journey starts and simultaneously when Varadhan begins his search for the lost car. Sha Ra, a desperate passenger on the bus, was amusing, and his one-liners worked. That helped a lot to push the story forward. The various characters inside the bus were quite interesting.

The eloped couple and their instant marriage conducted by the co-passengers was a far-fetched imagination, and the mother-son sentiment during the climax is an emotional draw. However, Arulnithi's childhood backstory, and its relationship to the bus journey were not convincingly established.

The mystery of the 13th hairpin bend and the appearance of the ghost were also some deceptive techniques had little impact on the story. The songs and BGM by Ron Ethan were fine. "Raasaadhi Rasan" is hummable, while the one that played during the end credit was melodious. However, the VFX and graphics came across as a cheaply executed material.

Arulnithi and Pavithra made for a good pair. Arulnithi has established himself as a credible actor with his unique acting style. He is calm, composed, and well-poised to carry a role that demands rugged and tough stature. Pavithra has made a solid debut as an action cop. Eager to see the kind of roles that she would play in her future projects.

'Diary' is a decent thriller that could have been a much better movie had the first half been equally engaging with subtle easter-eggs reminding us of the period. The twist worked in the second half, and the sentiment struck a chord with the audience. Congrats, director Innasi Pandian and team!

REVIEW: DIARY – Fascinating plot but execution was a complete failure

It doesn’t really dawn on you how fantastic of a story it is on the papers until the last 30 minutes or so. If this had been narrated, anyone would have responded “Yes, let’s do it.” Unfortunately, the viewer becomes impatient due to a number of forced necessary cliches for Tamil cinema, especially in the first half.

A group of police trainees are given a practical assignment to choose any unresolved cases from the past, and fate leads “Varadhan” (Arulnithi) to a puzzling case that needs to be solved. The validity of this concept maybe under scrutiny, and what comes next is a string of cornball moments that reveal the filmmakers’ lack of confidence in implementing what is written as is.

diary tamil movie review in behindwoods

Pavithrah Marimuthu as ‘Pavithra’ – Even the cops are frightened of her breathtaking entrance scene as a sub-inspector. However, it once again becomes a Hero’s world; only he can call her beautiful and start singing a love song in the first scene, make a strong woman weaker and ultimately turns himself into a male saviour. It’s high time you treat the female characters differently. A few characters’ performers were forcedly chosen to introduce humour that has nothing to do with the plot or the setting.

For example, if Chams is the jeep driver, you cannot disregard him because you are the hero or heroine and take him for granted just because he is funny. More research should be done rather than relying just on perception when trying to portray a community, in my opinion.

diary tamil movie review in behindwoods

The love, wedding, song, emotions, dialogues, and backstories of each character in the bus sequences are disjointed and appear contrived. Few people contributed significantly on screen, Arulnithi did his work at his favourite place to be comfortable. Only a few of Shara’s one-liners delivered inside the bus seemed to work somewhat. The film really hits its stride when the core plot is established, and mysteries start to come to light one by one. What we see next comes as a surprise after what we saw previously. More clarity and intriguing knots emerge, and we eventually discover that this concept is unique to Tamil cinema.

Diary had all the elements for a sensational thriller if it had been a serious and an honest attempt.

Diary Movie Review

Arulnithi once again delivers a unique thriller that is worth watching down goes our diary movie review..

diary tamil movie review in behindwoods

Performances

Story & narration, technical aspects & music.

Arulnithi now has his third release in two months, with the form of Diary. Being one of Tamil cinema’s brand ambassador for thrillers, the actor ensures that he tries to make each film different from the other and pulls off his parts convincingly. In the same way, Diary is a thriller that starts off with a mystery element, but later on pulls in many other things that manage to pick our interest.

Varadhan Annadurai (Arulnithi) is a brand new cop entering the scene, and the first cold case he picks up leads him to Ooty, where he is made to work with Pavithra (Pavithra Marimuthu). As he dives deeper into the case, he and the people he meets on the way are led to a bus which is travelling from Ooty to Coimbatore. What happens to the different characters inside the bus, and what is the main reason why they all are brought together forms the crux of Diary. Innasi Pandiyan’s storyline is interesting, but instead of directly getting to the core, the first half is made to lag through the use of poorly written comedy that acts as a major speed breaker. Only when the story picks up pace, Diary gets all the more interesting and rams up a good pre-interval portion. In the second half, the film is filled with many twists and turns – some unpredictable and some predictable.

Arulnithi once again understands the true value of the script and delivers a performance that is apt to the requirements of the film. The actor is managing to show a difference between the different roles that he takes up.

The supporting cast of the film is packed with many young and lesser known actors who do a very good job and keep us glued.

The film is technically solid and has a chilling score by Ron Ethan Yohann, with the cinematography by Aravindd Singh being upto the mark.

On the whole, Diary is a well-packaged debut from Innasi Pandiyan that is eerie and intense at places. The comedy in the first half could have been avoided for a more seamless product, but at the moment, it gets through as a fine thriller to catch in theatres.  Diary Movie Review by Siddarth Srinivas

டைரி Review: புரட்டப்படாத பக்கங்களின் சொல்லப்படாத கதை ஈர்த்ததா?

The film opens interestingly as Kishore and his wife travel in an Ambassador car on the hairpin bend roads of the Nigiris Ghats. He jokingly tells his wife that a ghost haunts bend number 13 and has caused several accidents. The car does crash at the location and the couple loses their lives. Diary Movie Review by Behindwoods

Overall, Diary could have been a far better film based on the potential the script had. But the tonal shifts between horror and crime thriller needed to be smooth, which is where the film mainly falters. It is one of those films where the audience knows exactly how better the film could have been, and feel genuinely sad that it didn’t come out that way. Arulnithi’s Diary is a watchable thriller that’s impressive in parts.

Diary Review by OTT Play

Arulnithi comes up with another mystery thriller, but misses the mark this time, too. With only a few takeaways, it is unlikely that even hardcore thriller lovers would find it interesting. Diary is streaming on aha Tamil.

Diary Movie Review by Siddarth Srinivas

On the whole, Diary is a well-packaged debut from Innasi Pandiyan that is eerie and intense at places. The comedy in the first half could have been avoided for a more seamless product, but at the moment, it gets through as a fine thriller to catch in theatres.

Diary Movie Review by Galatta

Ron Ethan Yohan’s music is definitely a big pillar of strength for Diary, with regard to the BG score. The talented composer’s pulsating score amplifies the overall impact of the scenes, keeping us hooked to the screens. Aravinnd Singh’s cinematography is neat and the dark and eerie mood of the film is maintained throughout with interesting usage of colours. A major chunk of the film takes place inside a bus and Aravinnd plays well with the restricted surrounding. Due credits to the sound department as well, for the striking sound design work. However, the VFX looks tacky, especially in the accident portions, while the DI is also a letdown.

SO? Despite the shortcomings, Arulnithi’s Diary is a likeable film for its smart writing!

Diary Movie Review by Kollywoodzone

Looks like storyteller Innasi Pandiyan was engrossed in having commercial elements in the film. Romance, comedy, sentiment, and songs are mandatory in Tamil cinema, right? So, instead of keeping the plot crisp, and absorbed on the case. We have boring romantic sequences, events to milk our emotions, and comedy. Thankfully, comedy works here and there. Perhaps, if director Innasi Pandiyan had stayed clear of distractions, and had been a tad creative with the ending, Diary could have been a satisfying thriller drama. This is not to paint, Diary as unwatchable. For those who could overlook illogicality, randomness, and enjoy the suspense in build up, Diary could make for a fine time killer.

Diary Movie Review by fulloncinema

The cinematography is one of the greatest strengths and BGM too works good enhancement for the movie.

Now with the flip side, there are very little points to mention, which actually doesn’t hamper the screenplay. The director’s ability to offer good twists at regular intervals eclipse minute logical issues.

Verdict: Gripping mystery-thriller with unexpected twists and turns keeps you focused throughout the show.

Diary Movie Review by Sophia Loren

The content of the movie diary is good and interesting. Diary has a better screen presence in the second half than the movie’s first half. In particular, the film’s final scene leaves us reeling yet enthralling. The biggest strength of the film is the last one hour. The rest of the screenplay is a wall built around it to make up for that one hour.

Diary movie’s first part seems boring compared to the second half of the movie. It will have been better if some unnecessary scenes are cut off. All the characters have done justice to theri role. The characterization is good, but it becomes boring with the in-depth details. Overall, Diary is a good thriller movie with a unique storyline.

Diary Movie Review - Too Many Deviations!

Diary Movie Review - Too Many Deviations!

Diary is a horror thriller genre flick directed by debutant Innasi Pandiyan. The film stars Arulnithi in the lead role and Fivestar Kathiresan has bankrolled the project.

Arulnithi is a Police officer who takes up an unsolved old dacoity case as his first one. There is a specific reason for it which is revealed later, how he finishes the case successfully forms the crux of the story.

Writing/ Direction:

The opening portions are promising, that we are in for at least a decent thriller. Soon after the track switched completely, I was even doubtful whether the operator changed the movie or something. The bus episode filled almost three-fourth of the movie, it was mostly boring with no big interesting elements. Also, the main problem is there was no staging or buildup for the bus episode. Felt like random people out of nowhere were getting inside the bus one after the other and I was wondering what was going on. The situations are tasteless and sequences have no coherence. Connecting the dots and linking them at one single point is the key, but the screenplay has not been written to achieve it comfortably. The thriller to horror transition is not convincingly presented, also the film suffers to choose between the two. The team has tried to jump scare the audience in plenty of places, but the old-school ideas don’t work anymore. The actual story is revealed at the very end, until then we are left alone guessing what could possibly be the plot. Direction isn’t clever enough, lots of explanations are shown repeatedly, in spite of them being open for the viewers already. The main twist is easily predictable and it’s officially out only towards the climax, so the surprise factor is absent. The way the film ended is good, powered by a smart plot point. With a small unexpected turn in the final five minutes, the movie gains momentum, however it’s too late to be good. Cringe dialogues and melodramatic emotions let down the show further.

Performances :

Arulnithi does well in a cop role which doesn’t require him to perform that hard, also his screen space is on and off, he doesn’t appear throughout despite being the central character. Debut heroine Pavithra Marimuthu has done a decent job, however her role isn’t convincing enough, in the sense she doesn’t have much importance to impact the story. Sha Ra’s presence is surprisingly tolerable, he is comparatively less exaggerated on-screen these days, in fact a few of his one line timing comedies work here. There are countless other artists who have enough screen time, but none of them have a convincing role to play, so their performances are stale.

Technicalities:

Solid music by Ron Ethan Yohann, even though the songs don’t land well on the film, they are very decent to listen to. Background score is powerful and he has tried to elevate all the weak spots of the storytelling with some heavyweight compositions. Exotic hill locations during aerial shots and there are some pleasing frames inside the small bus space, but the day for night DI looks horrible on the big screen, along with the poor VFX quality, the film loses its believability factor. Crisp editing was very much necessary to tighten the output’s engagement, lagging scenes fill the flow to a huge extent. Clap-worthy sound effects by the team, the effort to create an impact is evident.

Bottomline - Starts and ends on a decent note. Underwhelming screenplay filled with irrelevant and long-drawn-out sequences drains out the interesting plot. Certain appealing ideas are wasted by weak storytelling.

DIARY - Too Many Deviations!

VAATHI MOVIE REVIEW

Vaathi (aka) Vaaththi review

Vaathi is an action drama written and directed by Venky Atluri. The film stars Dhanush, Samuthirakani, and Samuyktha Menon in the lead roles. The film is produced by Sithara Entertainments and Fortune Four Cinemas, while it is distributed by Seven Screen Studios in Tamil Nadu.

Vaathi revolves around the life of Bala Murugan, a school teacher, who finds himself in the middle of business politics in the education sector. In the beginning, Bala Murgan is sent to a government school to teach the children of Sozhavaram. When these students perform well in the exams than the students from the private institutions, Bala is sent away from the village. The rest of Vaathi depicts the efforts made by Bala to support these children in their education.

Dhanush plays the role of a school teacher with ease and balances the film with his quirky behavior. An actor of such stature being open for different roles is appreciable. Even in this film, he disguises himself as Raavanan, and Bharathiar with no inhibitions. Samyuktha Menon shines along with Dhanush despite her limited screen presence. Samuthirakani is kept busy with his usual template but with different dialogues. Other characters justify their roles.

The frames of Yuvaraj lift the mass moments of the film and capture the drama without hindering it. Songs of GV Prakash hits the right chords providing the delight of the situations, but there are issues with their placement. For the most part of the film, the background score elevates the mood while it distracts us at other times. The period setup is brought to life by the art director.

The message enveloped in the film is a big positive for the film due to its relatability. Most of the scenes are simple and conventional which widens its reach among the audience. The romantic angle is short and it is woven into the storyline. This does not loosen the grip of the screenplay. Dhanush once again playing an underdog kind of role does wonders for the script as the sequence of him leaving the village touches the audience through its genuine moments.

The film falls out of reach when the script becomes over-ambitious in its content. Dialogues fall out of place which reduces the grit of the story. The engaging factor in the first half is considerably less than in the packed second half. Single-dimensionally sketched characters don't help the cause of the film. Though the film justifies its Telugu flavor with the geography, yet it is far stretched into convincing the audience.

Overall the film tries to sell its message with conventionally accepted tropes which succeeds in most parts. The run time and the simplicity of the script help the engagement.

Rathnam movie review: Unsurprisingly, Vishal and Hari deliver an outdated action-drama

Rathnam movie review: vishal and hari come together for an action-drama again, which is as dated as their old collaborations..

diary tamil movie review in behindwoods

In a recent interview, director Hari claimed the astonishing success of Ghilli’s re-release has given him hope and that he can now come up with stories with confidence and courage. The celebration of Ghilli after 20 years seems to have given the wrong idea that the market for over-the-top action dramas is still intact. It has to be noted that the film’s glorious re-run has more to do with nostalgia than the film itself. Director Hari’s recent release Rathnam, however, invokes a feeling of watching the rehash of his old blockbusters. Hari’s Saamy and Singham could still have a great run at the box office because these are films of their time, but not a film like Rathnam in 2024.

Hari’s films are known for the breakneck speed of his screenplay and screaming imagery; the cuts are insanely fast. The music is loud, and the camera moves swiftly, breaking all the rules and grammar of filmmaking with the sole purpose of making you go, ‘The film is sema fast, no?’ Rathnam, for a change, doesn’t feature such gimmicks. This is one of Hari’s most sober movies, but it doesn’t make it realistic. Vishal fights at least 250 people and kills some fifty with impunity. Yet, it is still grounded for a Hari film.

diary tamil movie review in behindwoods

Also, the director is trying hard to make an impact and the effort is evident. There are about five to six fight sequences and Hari wants every sequence to be different. There’s one involving a long single-shot sequence involving a complex fight, car crashes, and blasts. Another fight involves Vishal getting creative while using a billhook machete. He ties its handle to a rope so that he can use it as whip-cum-machete. Another sequence involves the goons dressed up as demons from hell as it’s the Dasara festival in the village. There is a stab at creativity, but it’s a miss. Ghilli, Samy, and Singam worked because they had great story arcs among other things; Rathnam’s story is a cliché. Hari hasn’t focussed his creativity to where it was needed.

Rathnam (Vishal), son of a vegetable vendor, saves a local kind-hearted rowdy Paneer Selvam (Samuthirakani) by stabbing his enemy. This enables Paneer Selvam’s rise as he later becomes an MLA, with Rathnam as his ‘right hand’ man. The two run a Kangaroo court with a cause — offering us the same old Godfather conundrum. They are a necessary evil, according to the director. Paneer Selvam tells senior police officials that the society can be in harmony when cops and rowdies have an understanding. The lines between good and bad are all blurred in Hari’s universe. They are good people because the director says so. The bad people are the typical land-grabbing real estate tycoons, who are after the five-acre plot of heroine Mallika (Priya Bhavani Shankar), an aspiring medical college student, who has appeared for NEET four times. The hero wants to put his life on the line and save her because she looks like her mom. What else does a quintessential Tamil rowdy need for a motive? He even carries around an old photo of his mom (also played by Priya Bhavani Shankar).

As far as filmmaking goes, Hari has tried to be fresh and inventive, but the soul of the film is dated. The scenes that try to flesh out what’s called family sentiments don’t belong to this day and age. It is laudable that Hari continues to write drama in an action film, but the quality of the dialogues and the emotions are straight out of his old movies. One can argue that Hari is old school, but there’s a difference between being a prized antique and obsolete.
