World Earth Day is observed every year on April 22. The aim is to bring attention to the effects of ever-increasing global warming, openly debate about how it affects our daily lives and spread knowledge on the ways to prevent further harm from occurring, as well as undoing what has already been done. On this day, a number of important issues are discussed publicly, including climate change, increasing sea levels, ozone layer thinning, and indiscriminate deforestation. Numerous conferences, awareness campaigns, etc., are organised to commemorate this day. Some volunteers choose to plant trees on neighbouring property, while others prefer to clean the adjacent roads or rivers.

Several nations across the world celebrate World Earth Day. It's a day set aside to spread awareness and show appreciation for the Earth, our home planet.

First Earth Day Celebrations | Earth Day was first observed in the USA, and eventually it came to be celebrated worldwide. It is observed by more than 193 nations with a strong commitment to educating the populace. The inaugural Earth Day was commemorated on April 22, 1970. American Senator Gaylord Nelson recognised the necessity for this day in 1990, the first World Earth Day was officially recognised on a global level.

Meaning | Legend has it that the Sant Barbara oil leak in 1969 killed off zillions of aquatic species, including flora, and as a result, Earth Day was instituted. Earth Day is meant to remind people of the need to be more aware and appreciative of the planet's resources.

Activities Undertaken | Everyone is urged to switch off all unnecessary lights. 500 Words Essay On Earth Day

April 22 is recognised as World Earth Day to show support for the planet's health and promote public awareness of the problem. Over 190 nations have celebrated it since 1970. The signing of the Paris Agreement this year has increased the importance of World Earth Day. This agreement has been signed by about 120 countries, including the US and China, who promise to enact regulations that will reduce the release of ozone-depleting compounds into the atmosphere.

Issues Of Concern

World Earth Day is celebrated every year to raise awareness of the constantly growing global threat, freely discuss the catastrophic effects it has on our daily lives, and instruct everyone about how to prevent further damage and repair that has already been done. Environmental change, steadily rising ocean level, the depletion of the ozone layer, and ruthless deforestation are some predominant issues of discussion.

Establishing Earth Day

The need for an Earth Day began to be seen in the 1970s. It was then when people started becoming sensitive towards the planet and making some effort to protect it. The inaugural Earth Day celebration took place in 1970. There were millions of people involved. People protested and urged the government to safeguard the environment.

Gaylord Nelson’s Contribution

The key driving force for the Earth Day celebration was US Senator Gaylord Nelson. He demanded action in support of the environment alongside activists, students, environmentalists, and the general public. Additionally, he put a lot of effort into bringing the issue to a political level.

Senator Nelson was successful in his aim, and both the government and the general public enthusiastically supported the first Earth Day. Everyone who participated in the event—rich, poor, athletes, farmers, businesspeople, and others—made a commitment to preserve the planet earth.

Importance Of Earth Day

The only planet where life exists is Earth. It's special and the only location we have. It will put our very existence in peril if we can't keep it safe.

Numerous factors are necessary for life on Earth. For life to exist on Earth, there must be land, water, soil, forests, and air. But unregulated resource consumption, deforestation, pollution, climatic shifts, and other factors have seriously harmed the Earth's environment.

Earth Day serves as a reminder that sustainable living is necessary for ecological balance now more than ever. It serves as a reminder about how crucial it is to preserve ecosystems, nature, and other forms of life.

On Earth Day, we are reminded to act right away to stop the harmful effects of climate change.

How We Celebrated Earth Day In School

Last year, my school enthusiastically celebrated Earth Day. A special assembly was held wherein students presented their views about how the Earth could be protected and sustainable development be facilitated. Each class planted a sapling a promised to nurture it. Children also made posters around the theme “Earth Day” which were put up on the multiple display boards across the school. The activities helped students understand the importance of conserving the planet and also the ways to do so.

The Importance Of Earth Day

Earth Day was first celebrated in 1970, and since then, it has become a global event. The purpose of Earth Day is to raise awareness of environmental issues and encourage people to take action to protect the planet. It has played a significant role in shaping environmental policy and promoting sustainability.

Over the years, Earth Day has led to positive changes in environmental policy. For example, the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, and the Endangered Species Act were all passed shortly after the first Earth Day. Earth Day has also helped to raise awareness of environmental issues and promote sustainability. It has inspired individuals, businesses, and governments to take action to protect the environment.

Our Responsibility To The Planet

As human beings, we have a responsibility to protect the planet. Our activities, such as driving cars, using electricity, and consuming resources, have a significant impact on the environment. The good news is that there are things we can do to mitigate our impact.

Individual actions, such as reducing waste, conserving energy, and using environmentally friendly products, can make a difference. For example, using reusable shopping bags instead of single-use plastic bags can help to reduce waste. Installing energy-efficient light bulbs can help to conserve energy. Eating less meat can help to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Our Responsibility To The Planet

Businesses and governments also have a role to play in protecting the environment. Businesses can reduce waste, conserve energy, and use environmentally friendly products. Governments can pass laws to protect the environment, promote sustainability, and invest in renewable energy.

The Future Of Our Planet

Climate change is one of the most significant environmental challenges we face. Rising temperatures, sea levels, and extreme weather events are just a few of the consequences of climate change. If we don’t take action to mitigate our impact on the environment, the consequences could be severe.

However, there is hope. Many countries are investing in renewable energy and taking steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Individuals and businesses are also taking action to protect the environment. By working together, we can create a more sustainable future for ourselves and for future generations.

Earth Day is a reminder of our responsibility to protect the planet. It’s a time to reflect on the impact of our actions and to take steps to reduce our impact on the environment. We can all make a difference by taking individual actions to protect the environment, supporting businesses that prioritize sustainability, and advocating for policies that promote environmental protection.

The future of our planet depends on our actions today. By working together, we can create a more sustainable world for ourselves and for future generations. So, let’s celebrate Earth Day and make every day a day to protect the planet.

History of Earth Day

Celebrate Earth Day with these tips for helping our environment.

Our planet is an amazing place, but it needs our help to thrive! That’s why each year on April 22, more than a billion people celebrate Earth Day to protect the planet from things like pollution and deforestation . By taking part in activities like picking up litter and planting trees, we’re making our world a happier, healthier place to live.

The first Earth Day was celebrated in 1970, when a United States senator from Wisconsin organized a national demonstration to raise awareness about environmental issues. Rallies took place across the country and, by the end of the year, the U.S. government had created the Environmental Protection Agency. By 1990, Earth Day was an event celebrated by more than 140 countries around the globe.

( Learn more at National Geographic .)

You can celebrate and protect the planet at the same time. Check out these Earth Day ideas to help save the planet any time of year.

BECOME A WASTE WARRIOR

The number of garbage trucks Americans fill each year would stretch halfway to the moon. Toilet paper tubes, made from cardboard, take two months to decompose in a landfill. A plastic bottle sticks around for way longer—it can take over 450 years to break down! But instead of turning to the trash bin, you could turn these items into an awesome telescope or a flower planter. Before you throw something away, think about whether it can be recycled or repurposed. You can also limit waste by reducing the amount of things you buy. For example, check the library for that book you have to read before visiting the store.

PLANT A TREE

Researchers estimate roughly 15 billion trees in the world are cut down each year, so help offset that loss by planting a tree of your own. Trees absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen for people to breathe. They also provide shelter and food for animals such as squirrels and owls . Depending on where trees are planted, their shade can even reduce the need for air-conditioning in hotter months. How many more reasons do you need to go green?

TURN OFF THE LIGHTS

Does that lamp  really need to be on while the sun is out? Electricity doesn’t just happen—it has to be produced from things around us. A lot of times it comes from fossil fuels (such as coal, oil, or natural gas) that contribute to climate change . But electricity can also be made from renewable sources like wind, water, the sun, and even elephant dung! No matter where it’s coming from, try conserving electrical energy by using only what you need.

LIMIT YOUR WATER USAGE

It might seem like it’s everywhere, but clean, drinkable water is a limited resource. In fact less than one percent of the water on Earth can be used by humans. (The rest is either too salty or too difficult to access.) Turning off the faucet when you brush your teeth can conserve up to eight gallons of water a day. To help save even more water, challenge yourself to take a shorter shower (but still get clean!).

OFFER YOUR TIME

With a parent’s permission, volunteer to pick up trash at a nearby park, start a collection drive for recyclable items, or organize a screening of an environmentally themed movie. By getting involved and working with others, you’re not just helping the Earth—you’re making new friends too!

SPREAD THE MESSAGE

Talk to your friends and family members about what you’re doing and ask them to help. Need to get the conversation started? Get everyone together and reconnect with nature by taking one of our Get Outside challenges, or check out some other green tips you can share. The more people do, the better off our planet will be!

BE A PLANET HERO!

• In its lifetime, one reusable bag can prevent the use of 600 plastic bags.

• Recycling one can of soda will save enough energy to power a tv for three hours.

• Shutting down a computer when it's not in use cuts the energy consumption by 85 percent.

• For every mile walked instead of driven, nearly one pound of pollution is kept out of the air.

Handouts & Worksheets: Celebrate Earth

Requirements: Internet access required; one computer per classroom; projector

Earth Day is a day to celebrate Earth’s environment and help raise awareness of threats to our planet’s health. Earth Day takes place every year on April 22 in the United States. You can learn about Earth Day in order to figure out how to help protect the Earth every day.

Teaching Approach: Learning-for-use

Teaching Methods: Brainstorming, Discussions, Reading

Skills Summary:

  • Critical Thinking Skills: Remembering
  • Geographic Skills : Acquiring Geographic Information, Answering Geographic Questions

1. Activate students’ prior knowledge. Ask students if they have heard of Earth Day. Ask:  What do you already know about Earth Day? What is Earth Day all about? Have a whole-class discussion about what students already know about Earth Day. Make sure students understand that Earth Day is one specific day every year when countries all over the world focus on protecting the environment. 2. Have students read a magazine article about Earth Day. Have students read the National Geographic Explorer! magazine article “Celebrate Earth.” Then ask the following questions:

  • When did the first Earth Day take place? Why? (in 1970, because a senator from Wisconsin saw how dirty our air and water were)
  • What did people do at the first Earth Day celebration? (heard lectures, cleaned up trash, held parades, gave speeches)
  • What laws did the government pass to protect our environment? (cars must pass pollution tests, the Endangered Species Act protects animals in trouble)
  • What other countries celebrate Earth Day? (Mexico, Egypt, Russia, China)
  • What information did you learn from the article that was new to you?

3. Discuss environmental problems. Ask students to name environmental problems that affect their daily lives. Write their responses on the board. Students should provide everyday examples, such as: too much trash, wasting electricity, and wasting water. Ask: Is it possible to have a big impact on the environment by making small changes? If students say no or are unsure, provide a concrete example to illustrate, such as taking reusable bags to a store to create less waste. 4. Brainstorm ways to make every day Earth Day. Ask: Why might it be important to celebrate Earth Day every day? Elicit from students that we need to think about and protect the environment every day to help it most. As a class, look at the National Geographic Kids “Take Action for a Green World” article and talk about what it means to reduce , reuse , and recycle . Then have students brainstorm other examples of making small changes that have a big impact and explain their reasoning.

Extending the Learning

Have the class choose one way they would like to make every day Earth Day in your classroom, such as recycling paper or using less electricity. Ask students to suggest ideas and vote to choose one. Track the small changes your class makes and periodically remind them of the big impact of their daily actions. To celebrate the official Earth Day, have students create a school event. Ask them to partner with other classrooms to create awareness posters and write speeches for the event.

English Essay, Paragraph, Speech on “Earth Day – 22nd April” Complete Essay for Class 8, 9, 10 and 12 Students for Exam.

Earth Day – 22nd April

Earth Day is observed on the 22nd of April to mark the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970. On this day, let’s envision a healthy and peaceful planet, where there is pure air to breathe and a healthy environment to cherish. Our earth is a unique planet with air, water and soil; which are suitable for our life. So if the earth gets polluted, the living being will be polluted and hence could become extinct.

The Earth Day is a commitment to make life better not just bigger. It is a day to re-examine the ethics of individual progress at mankind’s expense. It is a day for looking beyond tomorrow, a future worth living. Every single person plays an important role in Earth’s environment. The Ban plastic Bags’ project, ‘Say no to crackers’ campaign, creation of several eco and environment clubs in schools are all activities that Mother Nature would cherish. If our waste will not be cleared on a daily basis, tonnes of waste would pile up in a couple of days.

We should try to reduce our waste, then we can save the energy. The first step may be to reduce the amount of paper we use. More than half of our garbage maybe recyclable while the rest goes into landfills. Then wastage of water should be avoided.

Water, air, and waste management are the key areas which will determine our harmony with nature. Let Earth Day bring us new energy to save, conserve and preserve our Earth.’

“ Protect our home, from not being ruined.”

  • Earth Day takes place every year on 22 April and is one of the biggest environmental protest movements on the planet.
  • The theme of Earth Day this year is 'Planet vs. Plastics' - campaigners are calling for a 60% reduction in the production of plastics by 2040.
  • The World Economic Forum's Global Risks Report 2024 finds that environmental risks make up half of the top 10 risks over the next 10 years.

“Good evening, a unique day in American history is ending. A day set aside for a nationwide outpouring of mankind seeking its own survival.”

Those were the words of US TV presenter Walter Cronkite as he described the aftermath of the first Earth Day back in 1970.

Here’s what you need to know about Earth Day in 2024.

What is Earth Day and what is the theme in 2024?

Earth Day is an international day devoted to our planet. It draws attention to the environment and promotes conservation and sustainability. Each year on 22 April, around 1 billion people around the world take action to raise awareness of the climate crisis and bring about behavioural change to protect the environment.

Participation in Earth Day can take many forms, including small home or classroom projects like planting a herb garden or picking up litter. People also volunteer to plant trees, join other ecological initiatives or take part in street protests about climate change and environmental degradation.

Official Earth Day campaigns and projects aim to increase environmental literacy and bring together like-minded people or groups to address issues such as deforestation, biodiversity loss and other challenges .

The global theme for this year's Earth Day is ' Planet vs. Plastics ', which recognizes the threat plastics pose to human health and with campaigners demanding a 60% reduction in the production of plastics by 2040.

From 23 to 29 April 2024, governments and NGOs from around the world will gather in Ottawa to continue negotiating the terms of the United Nations Global Plastic Treaty .

How did Earth Day begin?

Millions of people took to the streets of US cities and towns on 22 April 1970 in mass protests over the damage being done to the planet and its resources. Amid the demonstrations, protesters brought New York City’s usually bustling Fifth Avenue to a halt, while students in Boston held a “die-in” at Logan Airport. The environmental impact of the post-war consumer boom was beginning to be felt at that time. Oil spills, factory pollution and other ecological threats were on the rise, with little if any legislation in place to prevent them.

Earth Day has become a global environmental protest movement.

The protests brought together people from all walks of American life – accounting for about 10% of the US population – to demonstrate and voice their demands for sustainable change. The Earth Day website calls it the birth of the modern environmental movement.

What led to the street protests in 1970?

Concerned about increasing levels of unchecked environmental destruction, Junior Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin suggested a series of “teach-ins” on university campuses across the US in 1969 to raise awareness of environmental threats. Nelson was joined by Congressman Pete McCloskey and activist Denis Hayes to organize the teach-ins, but the group soon recognized an opportunity to broaden the event’s appeal beyond student populations.

The newly named Earth Day protest events attracted national media attention and support from around 20 million Americans across age and political spectrums, occupations and income groups.

What did the protests achieve?

The Earth Day demonstrations left an indelible mark on US policy. By the end of 1970, the US Environmental Protection Agency came into being and a stream of laws followed to help protect the environment . These included the National Environmental Education Act, the Occupational Safety and Health Act and the Clean Air Act. Further legislation was soon introduced to protect water quality and endangered species, and to control the use of harmful chemicals and pesticides.

When did Earth Day go global?

Earth Day went beyond the US in 1990. Around 200 million people from 141 countries joined efforts to boost recycling around the world that year, paving the way for the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Climate change poses an urgent threat demanding decisive action. Communities around the world are already experiencing increased climate impacts, from droughts to floods to rising seas. The World Economic Forum's Global Risks Report continues to rank these environmental threats at the top of the list.

To limit global temperature rise to well below 2°C and as close as possible to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, it is essential that businesses, policy-makers, and civil society advance comprehensive near- and long-term climate actions in line with the goals of the Paris Agreement on climate change.

The World Economic Forum's Climate Initiative supports the scaling and acceleration of global climate action through public and private-sector collaboration. The Initiative works across several workstreams to develop and implement inclusive and ambitious solutions.

This includes the Alliance of CEO Climate Leaders, a global network of business leaders from various industries developing cost-effective solutions to transitioning to a low-carbon, climate-resilient economy. CEOs use their position and influence with policy-makers and corporate partners to accelerate the transition and realize the economic benefits of delivering a safer climate.

This “Earth Summit”, as it became known, led to the formation of the UN Convention on Climate Change and the UN Convention on Biological Diversity , along with the Commission on Sustainable Development to monitor and report on the implementation of Earth Summit agreements.

And as citizens were increasingly concerned with corporate impacts on the natural environment, big and small businesses started to feel the pressure to consider sustainability in their practice.

Is climate inaction a human rights violation, how earth observation from space helps advance climate change research, why is earth day important today.

As the millennium loomed, the Earth Day movement turned its attention to the growing reality of the impending climate crisis with a clear message for world leaders and business: urgent action is needed to address global warming.

It’s a message that is even more relevant today. The latest report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change states that without further immediate action to curb greenhouse gas emissions, the world is on course for temperatures 3.2°C above pre-industrial levels by 2100. This level of warming would be catastrophic for the planet and all life on it, including humans.

The year 2023 was the hottest ever recorded .

The World Economic Forum's Global Risks Report 2024 finds that environmental risks make up half of the top 10 risks over the next 10 years, with extreme weather events, critical change to Earth's systems, biodiversity loss and ecosystem collapse being the top three.

Global risks ranked by severity over the short and long term

Nature is our biggest ally in fighting the climate crisis and has slowed global warming by absorbing 54% of human-related carbon dioxide emissions over the past 10 years. Yet, we are losing animals, marine species, plants, and insects at an unprecedented rate, not seen in 10 million years . Threats from human activity for food production and ocean use, infrastructure, energy and mining endanger around 80% of all threatened or near-threatened species .

Earth Day has become a leading light in the fight to combat climate change and nature loss. As we celebrate its 54th anniversary, we must make use of this truly global movement to act, as citizens and governments, as consumers and businesses, and as individuals and communities. Our survival could well depend on it.

This is the story of the first Earth Day—and why it mattered

The April 22 holiday arose from public outrage over a California oil spill. It also helped pave the way for key environmental protections.

Each year on April 22, people around the globe come together to honor and conserve their shared home: Earth.

Known as Earth Day, the holiday got its start in the United States in 1970 as a teach-in on college campuses. It has since evolved into a global celebration of the environmental movement’s achievements—and a reminder of the work yet to be done.

( 5 simple things you can do to live more sustainably .)

The same wave of activism that led to the creation of Earth Day also ushered in a new age of environmental legislation—one that saw the passage of the Clean Air Act and Clean Water Act as well as the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency. Here’s how Earth Day came to be a holiday—and why activists hope it will continue to shape a more sustainable future.

When was the first Earth Day?

The 1960s was a decade of environmental awakening for much of the United States. Most Americans were introduced to the effects of air pollution in 1962 when naturalist and former marine biologist Rachel Carson published Silent Spring . In the influential book, Carson meticulously chronicled how DDT, a then-widespread pesticide, entered the food chain and caused cancer and genetic damage in humans and animals.

Silent Spring was an instant bestseller, causing people to question modern technology’s impact on the environment, while setting the stage for the environmental movement to accelerate.

One of the original titans of the environmental movement was the father of Earth Day, former Democratic Senator Gaylord Nelson from Wisconsin. A staunch progressive and wilderness lover, Nelson made it his priority to pass environmental legislation like the 1964 Wilderness Act, which safeguarded federal land, and the 1968 Wild and Scenic Rivers Act, which established a process for protecting free-flowing rivers.

Then, in January 1969, a devastating oil spill in Santa Barbara, California, inspired Nelson to spearhead a new grassroots approach to the environmental movement. The oil spill , which killed thousands of birds and stained beaches along the California coast, was the largest the U.S. had seen at the time and remains the worst in California’s history.

Stirred by the energy of students participating in anti-war protests, Nelson set out to galvanize the same kind of action on behalf of the environment. He pitched an idea for a teach-in—dedicated discussions between faculty and students about the environment. He selected April 22, 1970, a date between Spring Break and final exams, to allow for maximum student participation.

Nelson recruited Pete McCloskey, a California Republican representative, and Denis Hayes, a young activist, to help organize the sit-in. Soon, the effort ballooned into what is now dubbed the Earth Day protest. By April 22, interest had grown so much that 20 million Americans at 2,000 colleges and universities and 10,000 grade schools participated in the first Earth Day through demonstrations, decluttering rivers, and more.

Polls from the time showed that concern for the environment had leapt to the forefront of public opinion—with air and water pollution even perceived as more important than issues of race and crime. In a 1971 poll, 78 percent of Americans indicated they would be willing to pay to clean up their air and water.

“The reason Earth Day worked is that it organized itself,” Nelson told the New York Times . “The idea was out there and everybody grabbed it. I wanted a demonstration by so many people that politicians would say, ‘Holy cow, people care about this.’”

Why is Earth Day so important?

While Nelson led the charge, the groundswell of public support for environmental legislation had generated widespread support in Congress and the White House. The momentum of the first Earth Day protest carried throughout the year—and amounted to some of the strongest environmental legislation to date.

By the end of 1970, President Richard Nixon signed into law the National Environmental Policy Act, the Occupational Safety and Health Act, and the Clean Air Act, which respectively lay the groundwork for government agencies to assess the environmental impact of their actions, set health and safety standards in workplaces, and allowed regulation of air emissions.

( The Clean Air Act saved millions of lives and trillions of dollars .)

To more effectively oversee and centralize any environmental regulations, Nixon created the United States Environmental Protection Agency—which was established just eight months after the first Earth Day.

Concern for protecting the environment continued throughout the 1970s as Congress passed the Clean Water Act, regulating pollutant discharges in U.S. waters, the Endangered Species Act protecting wildlife from extinction, and the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act, which regulated pesticides.

Nelson was at the center of most of these major environmental bills, specifically the Clean Air and Water Acts and the Endangered Species Act. He expanded his environmental activism and became a principal sponsor for laws that preserved the Appalachian Trail, established fuel efficiency standards, and banned DDT.

Just 10 years after the first Earth Day, Nelson wrote in the EPA Journal that predictions of the end of the golden era of environmentalism were preemptive and inaccurate.

( Forget your carbon footprint—your climate shadow is what really matters .)

“To anyone who has paid attention, it is clear that the environmental movement now is far stronger, far better led, far better informed, and far more influential than it was ten years ago. Its strength grows each year because public knowledge and understanding grow each year,” Nelson wrote.

The Earth Day movement went global for its 20th anniversary: Hayes organized a campaign that mobilized 200 million people to boost environmental issues and promote recycling through rallies and a drum chain in Gabon. This paved the way for a 1992 United Nations conference in Brazil focused on the environment, dubbed the “ Earth Summit ,” signaling a more serious effort from global governing bodies towards sustainability.

A few years later, Nelson’s contributions to the environment were honored in the form of a Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1995. Nelson continued to spearhead environmental activism in the new millennium, but this time he focused on the latest priorities: global warming and clean energy.

How is Earth Day celebrated?

Since its original conception as a teach-in, Earth Day has become a global phenomenon paving the way not only for protests and legislation, but also for volunteering and habitat clean-ups. The holiday now largely focuses on combating climate change. Its official site —which is managed by Environmental Action, Inc., the modern incarnation of the group that organized the first Earth Day—cites “climate change deniers” and “oil lobbyists” as two of the biggest hurdles for the modern movement.

Climate change continues to stir debate as Earth experiences a rise in the frequency of wildfires, extreme storms, and harsh weather, which also has increased the number of displaced communities. The UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change published a report in 2022 urging immediate action to slow the effects of climate change, warning of severe health consequences and worsening social inequities

( Meet the young activists demanding climate action .)

While scientists nurture nature to help slow the effects of climate change, activists continue to raise the alarm. Young people in particular are leading the charge both on college campuses and in the international sphere through prominent voices like Greta Thunberg.

“I don’t want your hope, I don’t want you to be hopeful,” Thunberg famously said at the 2019 World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland . “I want you to panic and act as if the house was on fire.”

  • Essay On Save Earth

Save Earth Essay

500+ words essay on save earth.

Taking care of our Earth is no longer an option – it is a necessity. There is no other alternative planet where life is possible other than Earth. Since the beginning of our existence, we have exploited nature by cutting innumerable trees to build infrastructure and killing animals for food. We have extracted minerals, crystals, and gems from the womb of the Earth. We have taken and used whatever natural wealth there is to take and are now facing the grave consequences of nature’s pushback. We must realise that the Earth’s resources are not limitless. They are depleting fast, and this threatens our existence on the planet that we call home. Thus, it’s crucial that we should take care of and save Mother Earth. This essay on ‘Save Earth’ will help us to understand the current condition of our planet and what measures we can take to save Earth. We have also compiled a list of CBSE Essays for students to boost their essay-writing skills.

Alarming Situation of Earth

The Earth has reached an alarming state. It’s high time for us to take action. Human activities have impacted the atmosphere and climate conditions of the Earth. It has had such an impact that the seasons have shifted. Now, there is a delay in the monsoon. The summer is becoming too hot and glaciers are melting. The sea level is rising, and aquatic life is on the verge of extinction. Pollution is increasing, and the air quality is getting worse day by day. The water is getting polluted, and the noise level is rising, due to which most of the people are getting ill. Global warming and the greenhouse effect are the results of human activities, which are now causing threats to human life itself. So, if we are not going to act now, then it will be too late, and till then, the existence of life on Earth will end.

Different Ways to Save Earth

To save Earth, we all have to come up together to make a difference. One person can not make up the difference, but we all together can do the miracle. We have to take care of small things in our daily routines, such as switching off the lights when not in need, closing the tap and using the water properly, and avoiding the use of plastic and non-biodegradable material at home. We should focus on solar and renewable sources of energy, such as solar heaters and panels. Take out the private vehicle or car only when required and prefer using public transport.

We should try to educate other people about the alarming situation on Earth and guide them on how they can contribute to saving the Earth. For this, various campaigns or group activities can be performed in public places to raise awareness. Also, we should plant more and more trees in our neighbourhood. We should adopt and promote an eco-friendly lifestyle. We must teach our kids the value of our planet, so they will also adapt to sustainable living and not exploit our planet. Remember, every little step does make a difference!

Essay On ‘Save The Earth’ – 10 Lines, Short And Long Essay For Children

Avatar

Key Points To Remember When Writing An Essay On ‘Save The Earth’ For Lower Primary Classes

10 lines on ‘save the earth’ for kids, a paragraph on ‘save the earth’, short essay on ‘save the earth’ in english for children, long essay on ‘save the earth’ for children, what will your child learn from the ‘save the earth’ essay.

Practising essay writing from a young age helps young learners develop an understanding of sentence formation and appropriate words. It also allows children to expand their vocabulary and learn new words. Learning new words and using them in sentences helps them improve their writing skills. Our planet is rich in natural resources, but it is rapidly depleting due to human greed. Writing an essay on saving the earth in English makes children aware of their surroundings and familiarises them with the steps that can be taken to improve the situation. This article provides some pointers and examples to help students write a good essay on saving the earth for classes 1, 2, and 3.

Writing an essay on ‘save the earth’ can be interesting, provided certain things are kept in mind. Following these tips enables your children to write an essay that is different and unique from others. If you, too, are wondering about how to write an essay on this topic, here are some tips for you:

  • Start with an introductory paragraph giving a general introduction about our planet earth and why is it beneficial for us to save it from depletion. The introduction should be such that it provides a flow to the entire content ahead.
  • The second part of the essay should be its body. The body should be divided into smaller paragraphs, each focusing on a different aspect. For instance, one paragraph can talk about all the problems faced by our planet; the second can talk about the reasons behind the same.
  • It is always advised to summarise your thoughts in a concluding paragraph.

Saving our planet, mother earth, is the need of the hour. We should understand our responsibility and do our bit to improve this world. Here are a few lines on save earth that can be used to write a good essay for class 1 and 2 kids:

  • Earth is the only planet in the universe that has life in this universe.
  • The planet has given us abundant natural resources like water, air, sunlight and more.
  • Humans have been exploiting the planet for their greed.
  • This has caused a lot of adversity such as global warming, unnatural disasters etc.
  • All of us should work towards protecting and saving our planet.
  • We should plant more trees.
  • We should stop hunting animals to meet our selfish needs, affecting the ecological balance.
  • We should follow the three R’s, i.e., Reduce, Reduce and Recycle.
  • Saving natural resources, water, and the environment should be our primary goal.
  • We should also spread awareness regarding saving the earth among the public.

Short paragraphs help children of lower classes to read and understand easily. It also guides kids to write a good essay on saving the earth for their classroom activities or even competitions. Given below is a short paragraph on save earth:

As we all know, the earth is the only planet in the universe where life exists. Not only that, but the earth also provides us with numerous natural resources such as sunlight, water, air, minerals, and so on. Humans, however, have depleted almost all natural resources due to greed. They have also hunted down many wildlife animals, causing the majority of species to become extinct. “Save the Earth” is a phrase that should be used to raise public awareness. We must plant more trees, reduce pollution, and conserve natural resources to save the planet. We should also reduce exploiting the gift of nature and follow the 3R’s, i.e., Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

Saving the earth is very crucial at this point. Writing a short essay on this topic allows the children to be more aware of their surroundings and also allows them to take steps to protect the environment. Given below is a save earth essay for classes 1,2 and 3:

Short Essay On 'Save The Earth' In English For Children

We often refer to our planet earth as “Mother Nature”, but when it comes to treating it like a mother, we fail to do so. Our planet is the home of many living creatures such as mammals, reptiles, plants and many more and all beings need to sustain an ecological balance. However, due to the unfavourable activities of humans, the ecological balance of the earth is being destroyed. Humans are cutting down trees, creating pollution as a result of which global warming is increasing. We all should take individual steps to save our planet. The government has taken steps to protect the environment, such as banning plastics and plastic products, running campaigns to reduce waste and keep our surroundings clean, and so on. We must also take steps such as planting more trees, replacing large vehicles with bicycles, limiting air conditioners, and using LED lights. We can save our planet if we follow at least a few of these steps.

Writing an essay on ‘save the earth’ helps children understand the world’s serious situation and encourages them to help find solutions. A long essay for class 3 kids is provided below to help them understand what points to include when writing an essay:

“Earth provides enough to satisfy every man’s needs, but not enough to satisfy every man’s greed,” Mahatma Gandhi once said. Although he made this statement many years ago, it is still valid. Mother Nature, as we fondly refer to our planet Earth, provides us with a wide range of natural resources such as sunlight, minerals, and water, to name a few. Humans have used these resources for a long time and have exploited them to a large extent.

Why Is It Necessary To Save Earth?

Our planet earth is facing plenty of problems due to mindless human behaviour, which has resulted in a difficult position. We have cut down trees to build industrial factories, buildings, and townships, among other things. These industrial plants emit hazardous chemicals that pollute the air and water. Population growth is also a significant contributor to the earth’s depleting condition. The increased number of cars on the road has resulted in pollution and the emission of harmful greenhouse gases, all of which contribute to global warming. As a result, seasons have been pushed back, monsoons have disappeared in some areas while flooding has occurred in others, and glaciers are melting.

Easy Ways To Save Earth

Saving the earth is not difficult if we all contribute our tiny bits towards it. Some of the easy steps that we can take in our daily lives to save our planet are:

  • We should reduce our use of plastic in our daily routine.
  • We need to plant more trees.
  • We should prioritise water conservation. Bathing in a bucket rather than a shower can save litres of water.
  • We should use carpools or shared vehicles to travel daily because it reduces pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.
  • We should adhere to the 3Rs, which emphasise reducing, reusing, and recycling.
  • We should use LED bulbs.
  • We should reduce our electricity consumption by not unnecessarily leaving fans, lights, or other electrical appliances on.
  • We should also concentrate on solar and renewable energy sources, such as solar panels.

This essay will help your children learn more about their surroundings while also making them aware of why we need to save our planet. This also encourages them to participate in various Earth-saving campaigns organised by multiple groups.

Earth has provided us with numerous resources that have been extremely beneficial to humanity over the years. It is our turn to repay our planet by taking steps to protect it.

Moreover, we all plant small saplings in a barren land so that it may grow and flourish in the land area after some years. Also, we take part in various processions to make people aware of this day. So that they may also take part in protecting our environment.

Furthermore, in schools, the teachers teach the students the methods to plant a tree. The school provides buses to take the students to the jungles. There they come to know about the different types of plants. And the types of vegetation in which they survive. Also, the students have to bring a sapling from their homes and plant them inside the ground. This helps them in getting practical knowledge. Further, it also creates an emotional attachment to the environment.

Celebrating Earth Day around the world

Asu school of international letters and cultures faculty share how other nations incorporate sustainability.

Originating in the United States in 1970, Earth Day is now celebrated worldwide. But even before it became an official day, many countries were already mindful of their carbon footprint in their daily routines.

Arizona State University professors from the School of International Letters and Cultures share their insights into how sustainability and respect for the Earth are woven into cultures around the globe.

According to Professor of German Nina Berman , Germany has a history of prioritizing a relationship with nature that dates back to the 19th century. This can be seen in a range of cultural movements, from an 1811 gymnastics movement centered on engaging in physical fitness in nature and a hiking movement in the late 1800s, to the prominence of the European “nature cure” movement and homeopath Sebastian Kneipp, who laid the foundation for modern naturopathy.

Berman said it is even shown through the sizeable exhibition in Hamburg for Kapa David Friedrich, a painter known for his artistic commentary on the relationship of the human being to nature.

This widespread awareness of the important of nature can be seen in the modern day in many ways, including the fact that Germany, which uses a multiparty system, has a Green Party, which has had national representation since 1983. Though it has experienced its ups and downs, the Green Party won its largest percentage of the vote in 2021 at nearly 15%.

Berman remembers being a teenager in the 1970s and having four recycling stations at home. Her family also composted their food waste to use in their garden.

“Today in Germany, you have these kinds of trash cans outside of everybody’s homes,” she said.

Since 2022, single-use plastic grocery bags have been banned in the nation. Andto encourage recycling, Germany has a bottle return system called “Pfand”, which means deposit. Beverages packaged in single-use plastic bottles have a small deposit of 0.25 euro or less built into their cost.

Once you have finished your drink, you can return the bottle to any store that sells them. According to the recycling company TOMRA, Germany has the world’s largest and highest-performing deposit return scheme, achieving a record 98% return rate on eligible single-use drink containers.

For many Germans, the importance of respect for the environment also stems from their experience of the 1986 Chornobyl disaster, when a nuclear explosion at the power plant in Ukraine (then part of the Soviet Union) spread radiation across much of Europe.

“Nuclear pollution came out of the plant and destroyed the entire area around it. But the radioactivity and the radioactive clouds went all the way across Eastern Europe, into Western Europe,” Berman said. “So we had guidelines to take off our shoes when we entered the home, take showers and not buy certain foods that were grown outside for quite a long time. So this was a huge disaster in 1986. And that also sort of brought this awareness around how the climate crisis is emerging too, brought it to people's consciousness.”

Japanese culture has a long history of honoring nature and respecting resources. The Japanese word mottainai is commonly used to express the feeling of regret after wasting something. According weforum.org, the word is translated “don’t waste anything worthy” or “what a waste,” and it encourages reusing materials — clothing, shoes or even leftover food — until their full value has been utilized.

The word mottainai is also associated with Japan’s Indigenous religion, Shinto, which considers the land, nature and even humans to be children of “kami,” which are deities. Because of this belief, nature is especially sacred in the Japanese culture.

“There is no particular god in Japan,” said Hiroko Hino , an instructor of Japanese in ASU’s School of International Letters and Cultures. “So religiously in Christianity, there is one God. But in Japan, there are hundreds of types of gods around us. So thank all the gods. And then think of the importance of showing gratitude every day. And then we feel, that’s some sort of ethical spirit, gratitude or some other — well, that’s how Japanese life has been for a long time.”

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government has a goal of halving the city’s greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 — a bold target for the world’s most populous city — as well as goals to become a leader in renewable energy usage and reducing food waste.

These are big aspirations for the future, but until then, Hino explains just how simple it is to be mindful of the planet each day.

It is as easy as turning off the lights when leaving a room or turning off the faucet when brushing your teeth, especially crucial for those in the American Southwest where water scarcity is becoming an urgent topic.

The Italian faculty at the School of International Letters and Cultures aims to teach students about environmental awareness through a cultural lens with courses such as ITA 350 Food and Culture: The Mediterranean Lifestyle in Italy.

Assistant Teaching Professor Ilaria Tabusso-Marcyan , a Rome native, teaches her students how to engage in healthier food systems through the Mediterranean diet and incorporates sustainability courses into the curriculum, such as composting.

She said her students view food in a completely different way once they have finished the class. Food is no longer just a way to fuel oneself or consume calories.

The Mediterranean diet emphasizes regional, local and fresh food systems and ties into the Slow Food movement, which started in Italy in the mid-1980s and champions locally grown food and traditional cooking.

For the last few modules of the Mediterranean lifestyle class, students examine sustainable food systems and food waste. They also learn about alternative food systems, such as community gardens, and the different in agriculture today, such as the loss of family farms and pollution as a result of the farming industry.

“They can see that the food system is part of the larger connection, and the way that we use the agricultural land has an enormous impact on the contemporary environmental issues related to pollution and drought,” Tabusso-Marcyan said.

The Mediterranean class has inspired some students to begin composting. To provide further ideas, Tabusso-Marcyan invited ASU alum Lauren Click to talk with her class last semester about her nonprofit organization Let’s Go Compost , which aims to make composting free and accessible for communities across the United States, similar to how libraries are a free resource. Click is the founder and executive director of the nonprofit, whose website offers classroom composting curriculum free to all educators.

It's all part of the class that uses the lens of delicious food to bring attention to sustainability.

“Thinking of the Mediterranean lifestyle and the Mediterranean diet is for students to understand their own food system and the way they eat,” said Tabusso-Marcyan. “So I’ve seen students at the end of the semester being much more aware about the issue of food waste and the impact that the food waste has on the environment.”

This 2024 Earth Day poster is an ocean themed vertical 15x30 illustration created from NASA satellite cloud imagery overlaid on ocean data. The white cloud imagery wraps around shapes, defining three whales and a school of fish. Swirly cloud patterns, called Von Kármán Vortices, create the feeling of movement in the composition. The focal point is a cyclone in the upper third of the poster. At the center flies the recently launched PACE satellite. The ocean imagery – composed of blues, aquas, and greens – is filled with subtle color changes and undulating patterns created by churning sediment, organic matter and phytoplankton.

For nearly five decades, the agency and its partners have collected data across all of the world’s ocean basins with satellites, airplane-mounted instruments, and space shuttles and stations.

On April 11, NASA released the first images from the Plankton, Aerosol, Cloud, ocean Ecosystem (PACE) satellite, which was launched on Feb. 8, 2024, from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. PACE joined the Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) satellite and Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich in helping NASA revolutionize our understanding of our oceans. You can see one of the images below, in which bright pink and green colors indicate different communities of phytoplankton.

NASA’s PACE satellite’s Ocean Color Instrument (OCI) detects light across a hyperspectral range, which gives scientists new information to differentiate communities of phytoplankton – a unique ability of NASA’s newest Earth-observing satellite. This first image released from OCI identifies two different communities of these microscopic marine organisms in the ocean off the coast of South Africa on Feb. 28, 2024. The central panel of this image shows Synechococcus in pink and picoeukaryotes in green. The left panel of this image shows a natural color view of the ocean, and the right panel displays the concentration of chlorophyll-a, a photosynthetic pigment used to identify the presence of phytoplankton.

Discover more about PACE and NASA’s Earth-observing fleet during an in-person celebration. The event will be hosted at NASA Headquarters in Washington, D.C., on April 18 and 19, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. EDT. The event will include:

  • More than a dozen hands-on Earth science activities, such as a 3D glacier puzzle and natural hazards trivia
  • Instructions for creating animated GIFs using NASA Earth science imagery
  • Opportunities to engage with the Earth Information Center, which offers data-rich visualizations and immersive experiences that show how our planet is changing.
  • Two new stories that will screen on the Earth Information Center’s Hyperwall. One highlights how local African communities use NASA Earth science data in partnership with the Jane Goodall Institute to monitor forest habitat for chimpanzees and agricultural land use over time. The other explores how the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency monitors methane emissions from landfills with NASA remote-sensing data.

Online, explore how NASA works to understand our oceans at a global scale. Visit science.nasa.gov/earth/earth-day/ for dozens of resources, including:

  • Downloadable guides for creating ocean currents in a test tube and a flip book showing how rivers change over time
  • Activities that show the importance of water on our planet and how researchers study our oceans and waterways

NASA’s in-person and virtual Earth Day events are free and open to the public.

You can also celebrate Earth Day as a NASA citizen scientist. Play the NeMO-Net iPad game to help NASA classify coral reefs, or download the GLOBE Observer app to help monitor clouds, water, and plants in your area. NASA’s citizen science projects have led to thousands of observations and several discoveries, with more than 410 NASA citizen scientists named as co-authors on peer-reviewed scientific publications. NASA citizen science is open to everyone around the world, not just U.S. residents.

NASA’s innovative tools and data inform decision-makers around the world as they monitor our changing climate and work to address environmental challenges. NASA partners with state and local governments, international space agencies, and federal agencies including the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). NASA is committed to making data accessible, inclusive, and transparent for everyone — an approach known as “open science.”
